Super stoked to see what’s in store for Carousel Club at Electric Forest this year. I know they like to change things and keep it fresh, but I still hope it’s the same when I get back. Can’t beat the old school Havana vibes. Starting to put together a Top Moments of the Last 10 Electric Forests post for @electrojams, which involves a great deal of sorting through old photos, notes, coverage, and fuzzy memories. I was thinking of trying to create a Top Actual Moments list, but I’m not sure how to establish that measure objectively, so I’m just going to go with my version instead. ⁣ ⁣ It’s been a wild ride since that first ambitious weekend in 2011. Aside from the String Cheese Incident (pictured here (kinda)), the biggest constant at the Forest is change, whether you like it or want it or not. That’s not a bad thing, but it is A thing. Don’t get too attached to any one thing (unless it’s Bassnectar I guess) because at some point it WILL be replaced. ⁣ ⁣ Spoiler alert: Somewhere in this 2014 photo is one of my top moments.  A selection of some of my favorite photos that I took in 2019. It was a bit of a dumpster fire meets throwaway year for me. I didn’t make any progress in a lot of important self help and self care areas, and much of my course for the year was determined by my anxiety. 

It’s peculiar, because my year started out with such promise. I vacationed by myself in Mexico, where I didn’t speak nearly as much Spanish as I thought I knew. But I made friends with the people I met, and many of my fears about how I’d absolutely flounder without my partner present turned out to be unfounded. It felt like I’d overcome a huge hurdle and that I was firmly planted in a new phase of personal growth. Then, bit by bit, it felt like any progress stopped, which gave way to a feeling of moving backwards, of regression. 

The photo of the green man playing electronic doodads is a shot of Manatee Commune playing at Electric Forest. I believe that was the only show that I got up front for in the entire four days of the festival. My anxiety kept me attached like a koala to my crew, kept me from venturing out on my own, even if for fifteen minutes to shoot a performance up close. It was my ninth Forest, but it felt like it was my first in a lot of ways. 

But it wasn’t all bad. I still had a good time and I was glad I went. I also feel like I upped my photography game this year. I still experienced ups and downs, which I think are inevitable, but I came out with a lot of quality shots and grew more comfortable with post processing in Lightroom. 

It’s tricky balancing between self-awareness, honesty, and being too hard on yourself. When I’m overly vigilant, I am not kind to myself. When I am under-vigilant, I quickly fall into bad habits. 

I’ve made progress, though, in some areas. I worked to get more experience in photography I’m unfamiliar with, like portraits. I also hustled to earn money from photography through real estate work and one-off projects. 

With a sure amount of work and effort and perseverance, I think I can continue improving my photography and editing games, and continue working towards building a career out of using a camera. 

In practice, I think this will translate to confronting my fears. Not just acknowledging them, but running at them like a crazy person.
