My Hero Academia is Officially Ending and I'm Fucking Coping šŸ˜
So, it was officially announced early today, June 24th, 2024, by Shueshia and mangaka, Kohei Horikoshi, that My Hero Academia/Boku no Hero Academia will officially end in 5 chapters on Chapter 430. The last chapter will be released at the beginning of August after 10 years of publication in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine if all goes well.
I woke up to this news. I'm sitting here on my laptop typing this as a way of coping tbh. On the outside, I'm numb and stunned. On the inside, I'M SCREAMING, CRYING, THROWING UP, MOURNING LIKE I LOST A LOVED ONE WTF šŸ˜
*sigh* But, this was going to happen eventually. It was only a matter of when. When Horikoshi said that we would have more epilogue to cover, I thought "Maybe he'll give us 10 more chapters!" Turns out it is 6-7 chapters instead... In Horikoshi's defense, 6-7 chapters are much longer than what most mangaka have given us for epilogues to their stories. I'd rather have him give us 5 more chapters of an epilogue than rush it in 1-2. Plus, if possible, we could potentially get 19-20 pages per chapter which might be just enough to wrap everything up. And since final chapters of manga tend to be longer than usual, we could get extra pages in the last chapter to finish everyone's arcs and the story properly.
Still, it's so wild to see a series I have loved for years and have such a strong attachment to end as I am following it. I have been a part of many fandoms before and have stuck around them for years (PokƩmon, Supernatural, Doctor Who, Breaking Bad, and many more), but it's not often that I've been there there to see a series come to it's conclusion. Sometimes that can turn out well (Breaking Bad) and other times I've seen it end badly (Supernatural; only read about it and it was not great. I bounced after season 13? and I am so sorry to the fandom). My Hero Academia is one of the very few series I will see through to the end.
I'm really coping here, honestly. I've been a fan of My Hero Academia since 2018. I first heard about the series randomly through the internet, but I didn't fully introduce myself to it until I listened to a cover of The Day on YouTube (I forget the artist, I'm so sorry). I thought the song was so cool and that led to me listening to more covers of MHA OPs (Peace Sign is still GOATed btw). This eventually led me to the manga and the anime where I became truly immersed in the series. I started reading the manga around the Joint Training Arc (I think) which was definitely an interesting time to read the manga because the chapters where so short due to Horikoshi dealing with health and I think moving conflicts at the time. It was still an enjoyable arc and enough to keep me interested in reading from the beginning. I want to say I started the anime around season 3?, but I started at the beginning and worked my way up from there. "Shoto Todoroki: Origin" was the episode that finally solidified my love for the series and is still my favorite episode of the series.
To say that MHA has an important place in my heart is an understatement. (āš ļøWarning: very quick mention of suicide) I was very sad and depressed in the latter half of 2018. My life didn't feel like it was going anywhere and I was close to giving up entirely. (āš ļø ). Finding and loving MHA during that time honestly might have saved my life. As strange as it sounds, it was one of the few things that brought me genuine happiness at the time. I had something to look forward to every week and it was thrilling. I still remember debating whether Deku or Shoto was my favorite character. Shoto took the top spot in my heart, but Deku is a very close second šŸ©µšŸ’š.
Seeing MHA end is heartbreaking, honestly. I'm watching something I truly love come to an end. We'll still have the anime, movies, and spin-off series to keep us busy for the next few years, but the manga that started it all is coming to a close. It feels so, so surreal. God, is this how the Haikyuu fandom felt when itā€™s manga ended? My hope is that this fandom can be kept alive long after the series is over. The MHA fandom DEFINITELY has it's flaws, but it also has a lot of good in it too. I have seen incredible art and fanfics come from this fandom. I have laughed and hyped up some of the best moments of MHA with people who love it too. I know that the fandom is collectively mourning its end and I know we'll all cry bittersweet tears when it ends. If anything, I am glad to see Kohei Horikoshi end his momentous story on his own terms. I hope it ends up being one of the best manga endings in recent Shonen Jump like how Haikyuu's was. I think Horikoshi can do it. Regardless of how it ends, My Hero Academia will be one of my favorite pieces of fiction. I am really glad to be here to celebrate it.

Looking back at the manga now that MHA has ended, I wonder if it was HKā€™s intent all along to go with the ending he did.
Mangakaā€™s have to plan in advance right? Unless it works differently in Japan, donā€™t they have to provide a story board and such, along with the idea of what the end will be. Because looking at MhA as a whole, it makes it seem like there is hope in tragedy, the only issue is the execution because the pay off seemed underwhelming, even if the villains were killed. Idk how otherwise HK could have wrapped this manga off with the pay off people wanted.
As an example, looking at the Todoroki plot which is one of the more in depth aspects of the story. Looking back it does seem like Dabi was meant to die in the end, how he ā€œsteppedā€ in to the light with Hawks as I remember seeing metas on that symbolizing hope or such (and now I wonder if it just means Dabi literally stepped into the light.) Aside from that, HK didnā€™t really give us any signs in MvA, he just kept hammering in how ā€œevilā€ the villains were, making it seem like they were too far gone, and in the end, it did come off that way where they had to die in order to find peace.
The point is, wouldnā€™t a mangaka have to have a defined goal in order to publish? Or is it solely based on the decision of an artist chapter by chapter. Apologies if what I said above comes off weird, Iā€™m just frustrated with how it ended, and I just question if HK did intend for this ending all along. After all, why publish it if it wasnā€™t his intention? Killing the villains is so far on the other side of the bar compared to saving them, I wonder if he thought he was too far gone unthinking they could live in his planning unless Shonen didnā€™t allow it? But yet again looking at it, it would NOT have been hard to change it up at the end for them to live. He just chose not to. But like I said, maybe he intended for them to die all along with all this set up he was doing for the kids to save the villains hearts. It was never about keeping them alive and maybe people misinterpreted that? Because when exactly did people start talking about the villains being capable of being saved? Or was it just a bias that came up for villains stans.
I wish I could talk to HK and know what it was like. Because it seems like heā€™s happy with how his manga ended, so maybe it was his plan all along?
I think he needs to have a general plan, but it's not like the story was pre-written. Mangaka have to be ready to end it on short notice if their manga is not successful. Horikoshi at that point already had 2 of his previous manga axed and from interviews, we know he was very insecure and worried and kept changing things in accordance with reader feedback.
As for him changing his mind, we know of two examples that he talked about:
He wanted to have the Forest arc longer with more fights, and to reveal the traitor soon after, but did not do it, as readers' feedback was negative on the villains. So he cut that arc short.
He wanted Endeavor to die in the PLF war and decided to keep him alive - this is obviously one of those big swings between life or death that had impact on the entire story. And looking at Act 3, it's clear that he did not think through properly all of the impact it would have.
We also know that often he did things last minute - for example, Nagant's design and her backstory came from him watching the movie Wanted like 2 weeks before he published the chapter. So obviously that means he changed stuff about the HPSC plot as well compared to what he had originally planned.
As for WSJ meddling: I'm not sure how much influence the editors had. We know that even though he wanted originally Deku to be a quirkless tech-based character, and an adult, the editors at the time forced him to put it into the high school setting and give Deku a power.
But towards the end, he always said that his editors were basically inexperienced yes-men who just cheered him on with whatever he wanted to do. So I'm not sure that WSJ "forced" him to kill the villains, or told him to end with a hetero romance.
But the editors pre-screen the fan mail - so knowing how much Horikoshi was influenced by reader feedback, obviously an editor would be able to manipulate him depending which feedback is given to him.
And in the end, I think he was just burnt out and wanted to end it. I feel like with how abruptly the fight ended after AFO came back in 419, it's not necessarily the big epic scene he had planned, but had no energy to execute whatever he had originally in mind and just finished it. That's the only way I can read why he'd give his MC such a whimper-like ending for his big fight.

People had say it before but with MHA over and JJK ending really soon, WSJ will be without two of their most popular series now (Now mostly having One piece because it will never die). Though maybe Kagurabachi will show to be a good replacement. (Did I ever recommend that one? If not you should check it out, it's pretty good)
I haven't read Kagurabachi! Just posts about it since the people I follow are into it!
Yeah, it already seem that MHA and JJK were at their ends and honestly, I'm not mad about it because stories do eventually have to end, but it's not a bad thing. I don't think the mangakas intended for their stories to go as long as they did (I know the feeling so well), let alone so popular, but as a fan of both (yeah, folks, imagine how I felt waking for to the news like this... FOR THE SECOND TIME), I'll say the experience of reading both stories was a fun one.

Maybe I'm just too old to be lurking in WSJ shipping fandoms but the despair over a certain superhero manga's leaked chapter is sad to see. Please, c'mon folks, you should know better than to put your whole heart into a queer ship from a series like this. The kindest the author can be is to confirm nothing and let the relationships remain open-ended in the final chapter. They were telling a story and we shippers decided to put our own spin on a relationship we liked. That's all it ever is and will be for these shounen series. I kept tabs on BnHA/MHA for most of it's run, and I live and breathe for the bkdk dynamic after Bakugou gets his shit together; it's got a ton of things I love. So it's not like I'm pooh-poohing this as an anti or a smug het shipper. Hell, I've been a SoRiku shipper for decades now. I get it. I really, truly do. But you have to protect yourself when investing in queer ships from media aimed at an audience of presumed cishet 12-18 year old boys. They aren't thought to be interested in a queer romantic subplot and, honestly speaking, more than a few would probably dislike the series and drop it if the MC was openly romantically interested in his best friend/rival/narrative foil. There's nowhere on earth where a major queer ship can become canon in a series like BnHA, even if the author intended it in the first place. Not yet, anyway. We're close in the West- we've gone from no rep at all to overt hints to speedrunning to the end of the series after confirming it. But Japan has a long way to go still in certain respects. (It's a mixed bag; I highly recommend checking out Moony's videos discussing the state of media production and the status of LGBT+ rights/portrayals in Japan if you're interested in the political side of things.)
I want this to change. I want to read a WSJ series one day, get attached to the characters, and see some well-written queer characters being repped in highly developed relationships. But BnHA was never going to be the one to do it. Be kind to yourselves and save your wholehearted hope for a series that deserves it.
