As de Bâtons. Art by Matthew Meyer, from Tarot Yōkai.
ワンドのエース SEIRYŪ Seiryu is a long-tongued dragon, one of the four shijin, the symbols of Taoism. It represents the planet Jupiter, benevolence, and creativity. In the minor arcana, the Ace of Wands speaks of our potential. We are open to new opportunities and creative inspirations. Upright: inspiration, new opportunities, potential. With the Ace of Wands, we are called to follow our passions: it is time to make room for our creative energies and embark on the path of a new project. The Ace of Wands can also represent significant inner or personal growth. Reversed: lack of direction, distractions, emerging ideas. Reversed, this card suggests that new ideas are coming but we do not yet know how to organize or shape them. It can also indicate that we have difficulty identifying our purpose in life, and that we struggle to find creative stimulation. Finally, this card can speak of a certain impatience, especially if we are already actively pursuing a project.

My poster of Japanese prophetic mermaids, the Ryūgū no tsukai (tr. Servants of Ryūgū), arrived (and was promptly framed). Art is by Matthew Meyer, noted Japan folklorist, writer, and illustrator.
Tumblr media
Ryūgū no tsukai are servants and messengers of Ryūjin, the god of the sea. These yokai are holy creatures; they appear as really large fish with horns and a human head, along with lots of hair (and sometimes beards), and sometimes swords. The servants' sizes range wildly (5m to 18m long). Many purportedly emit "a luminous glow," too.
According to Meyer, the mermaids' historical affiliation with warning against coming disease and devastation had a large part in their big jump in popularity over the past few years (during and after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic). Meyer's poster recreates the original ink-brush artwork with a high fidelity to the strangeness and uniqueness of the originals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The legends (as published in The Palace of the Dragon King by Meyer):
For seven days during April of 1819, a shining creature was seen in the sea off the coast of Tsushima, and people all over the province wondered at it. Eight hundred people from other provinces gathered in one hundred and twenty large boats and fired thirty guns at it all at once, but the thing was not fazed by this. Within seven days after shooting at it, the creature began to speak, and every night it said this: "I am nothing to be afraid of. I have come here from the Dragon Palace for a reason. One day this year, a great evil disease will come, and people will certainly die. Therefore, I ask you to copy my portrait and spread it around the country. Those who see my picture even once will be spared from this evil disease. It will also serve as an amulet for the safety of the land and for long life." Its body was nine meters long, and its face was about one and a half meters long. Another ryūgū no tsukai appeared off of Kumamoto. Its body was eighteen meters long and its face was 90 centimeters long. It had two horns, and its back was covered in purple scales. It had six fins, a tail like a goldfish's, and it carried three jewels. This creature explained that it was a messenger from the Dragon Palace and said, "This year there will be severe epidemic of a great evil illness, and the sick will not be saved. Therefore, in order to save many lives, I have come here to give you this message. All who hear my message are sure to be spared from the disease."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The poster is printed on washi paper, which offers subtler inks, reflects light slightly differently, and has a delightfully unique texture. As you can see, the many variations in the style and appearance of the mermaids shift and change in much the same way the stories told among villagers shifted and changed the more people who heard and shared them (and the more the people surely wanted amulets for their own safety). The largest among these yokai, Onna uo (tr. woman fish) (pictured below, right), has multiple swords on her tail and is said to be 145 meters long!

Dix D'Épées. Art by Matthew Meyer, from Tarot Yōkai.
ソードの十 OKIKU Okiku is the ghost of a servant linked to Himeji Castle. Courted by the samurai Aoyama, the woman rejects him several times but the man ends up trapping her. In the castle, in fact, were ten precious plates. Aoyama decides to hide one and then calls Okiku: she would not be accused of this disappearance if she became his mistress. She refuses, provoking the anger of the man after various tortures, he kills her and throws her body into a well. From then on, the ghost of Okiku appears at night counting the plates and haunting Aoyama, who will soon be found dead. The Ten of Swords speaks to us of painful and inevitable conclusions. Sometimes, it can seem that this end arrives without warning and violently shakes our world; in any case, it is an event that must be dealt with. Upright: painful endings, deep wounds, loss, betrayal. The Ten of Swords indicates a betrayal, a deception we feel hurt and still afflicted by the actions of others. It is also the painful end of a relationship, a job, a part of us. But there is hope: the end of suffering has arrived, and healing can begin. Reversed: recovery, regeneration, resistance. Reversed, this card indicates that we are resisting change or the end of a chapter; we must learn to let go. Alternatively, it can be a sign of good omen, a pledge that the painful situation has come to an end.

i think you do a really impressive job balancing comprehensive/concise while referencing a lot of complex frameworks(contexts? schools of thought? lol idk what to call that. big brain ideas) but if you have any readings specifically on the institution of psychiatry topic that you would recommend/think are relevant, I'd be interested. it's absolutely not a conversation that's being had enough and I want to be able to articulate myself around it
yes i have readings >:)
first of all, the anti-psychiatry bibliography and resource guide is a great place to start getting oriented in this literature. it's split by sub-topic, and there are paragraphs interspersed throughout that give summaries of major thinkers' positions and short intros to key texts.
it's from 1979, though, so here are some recs from the last 4 decades:
overview critiques
mind fixers: psychiatry's troubled search for the biology of mental illness, by anne harrington
psychiatric hegemony: a marxist theory of mental illness, by bruce m z cohen
desperate remedies: psychiatry's turbulent quest to cure mental illness, by andrew scull

This article needs an improved plot summary. (December 2015)
The plot is the same as Yo-kai Watch 2, but with some changes. One night, the evil Yo-kai duo Kin and Gin steal the Yo-kai Watch from Nate Adams to help their master Dame Dedtime prevent humans and Yo-kai from being friends. He then encounters the Yo-kai Meganyan, who tells him that Yo-kai are real. He and the crew head to Nate's grandmother Lucy Loo Adams, encounter a shadow and chase it, but to no avail. Meganyan returns, asking to pull out the cork in his body—the cork that suppresses his energy. Nate decides not to pull it out, and asks Jibanyan & Whisper to pull it out for him, but to no avail. Nate pulls it out, and he and the crew get covered in pink smoke. He finds help from the Yo-kai Hovernyan - and uses a time stone to take Nate, Whisper, and Jibanyan back in time 60 years to when the Yo-kai Watch was first invented by Nate's own grandfather Nathaniel Adams while he was a kid. Dame Dedtime gets word of this, and tries a plan to push the human world farther from the Yo-kai world. Together, the two boys battles against Dame Dedtime and her Wicked Yo-kai minions to save the world of the past from her evil plans and recover the Nate's Yo-kai Watch.

La Force. Art by Matthew Meyer, from Tarot Yōkai.
力 YAMATA NO OROCHI Yamata no Orochi is a giant snake with eight heads and as many tails that appears in the Kojiki and the Nihongi. The legend tells the story of Susanoo, wandering the earth after a diatribe with his sister and sun goddess Amaterasu. Along the way, he meets two desperate kami every year for eight years, Yamata no Orochi demands one of their daughters as a sacrifice. To save Kushinada Hime (the couple's last daughter), Susanoo offers to defeat the beast and manages to kill her with his sacred sword. As with Susanoo, the arcana of Strength represents courage and determination: it refers to the physical and spiritual faculties that help us overcome obstacles. Upright: strength, courage, influence. When this card appears, we feel great inner strength: we are determined and resolved to persevere on our path. The Force reassures us: we know how to face all obstacles. On a more spiritual level, this arcana invites us to "tame" the inner beast and to limit our instinctive reactions in favor of mediation. Reversed: doubt, weakness, emotions out of control. Inverted, Strength relates to doubts, vulnerability and a lack of balance. Perhaps we are going through a difficult period on a physical or emotional level, and we feel tired and far from our goals. Furthermore, this reversed arcana can reveal a tendency towards impetuosity and a lack of self-control in our behaviors and emotions.
