Yesterday was the first time I have stepped foot in a Disney park since 2018. It was one of the BEST theme park days I've ever had. I needed this. Epcot has always felt like a place to heal. It was like coming home again

So we went to a certain fanzine bazaar at house of vans, as one does. Truth is, D wanted to pick up a rare comic book that isn't normally imported. Normal libraries don't have it and the only way to get it is via buying it from a professional comic book dealer. Ok, so we are hipster enough to navigate these waters.
The entrance to the event is weirdly strict. They checked our bags for dangerous items and they made us show our ID plus sign a weaver, idk the legalese for the form in which they eliminate all responsibility plus they own your image as long as you're there.
Which is... exploitative because wtf, now house of vans OWNs your image for their marketing purposes. Anyway, we enter and we ofc know some of the people selling in there.
Their stands have some illustrations, some calendars, the obligatory quirky t-shirt and pin, you name it. But the public is waaay different from the public we are accostumed.
We usualy sell to the casual passerby, some teenagers with spare money in their hands, the annoying senior citizen who will ask you everything about whatever you're selling before buying in bulk, and sparcely, the adventurous tourist who went wild and visited other neighborhood that isnt the world famous Roma-Condesa corridor.
But in House of Vans, ALL of them were gringos. And not the usual tourist. The californian tourist. The New Yorker. The original hipster, the ones we have tried to emulate patethically since tweens. We are but the third world version of them, the knock offs. they of course dont speak spanish but we speak english.
And they buy a LOT. They love to spend money in weird souvenirs that have just the right mix of exotic with familiar. An axolotl with a "relatable" phrase in english, a tlacuache with a self-deprecating joke (in english). A comic book about machismo in mexico but from a new perspective! what if men suffered from it too!
The thing is... these friends PAYED to sell there. More or less 2k pesos (100 dlls) per capita just for the privilege to selling to gringos.
The locals (us) were prohibited from entering the international pavillion. Where american and european artists sold their stuff. They had cocktails and parasols while the local sellers had to stand under the scorching sun (24 C).
And the funny thing is that our friends, local seller, feel like the cool kids for having payed for such an experience

Denise Montoya, 15 (USA 1988)
15-year-old Denise’s parents brought her to Women’s Pavillion in Houston for an abortion on May 13, 1988 when she was 25 weeks pregnant. The abortion was done by Douglas Karpen, who was actually an osteopath and not an OB/GYN.
In what a lawsuit later called “extremely foreseeable complications”, Denise lost dangerous amounts of blood and had to be taken to Ben Taub hospital. Her condition deteriorated and she died on May 29, 1988.
Her parents filed suit against Karpen and Women’s Pavillion, saying that they had failed to adequately explain the risks of the procedure and had not had the parents sign any informed consent document before the abortion that killed Denise and her baby. No consent forms were even provided. Denise’s parents said that had they known how dangerous abortion is at 25 weeks, they never would have subjected their young daughter to the hazardous procedure.
Karpen was later caught killing babies born alive after attempted abortions. His own former employees testified that he killed the babies with his bare hands by twisting their necks “execution style.”

Sound at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015)
Tumblr media
This is my 5th trip to the Biennale di Venezia, hunting for signs of sound. Happily, with every returning visit there seem to be more and more sonic interventions, and this year sound feels embedded throughout.
It's interesting to notice recurring themes that seem to crop up throughout the mass of works from all over the globe. The 54th Biennale featured an unusal amount of glitter balls; at the 55th I saw alot of ladders. Is this coincidental or symbolic?
At the 55th Biennale, sound art had a very visible presence - making a statement. This year, sound was dotted around… part of a whole… contributing not dominating. I must admit, for a sound art fanatic like me, this was a little dissapointing.
If you've never been to the Biennale, here's the set up:
The whole of Venice is taken over by art. In May, the super rich arrive in their super yachts for the press view - revolting displays of wealth allowed by the sad corruption of the officials. As they descend their mega boats to admire the magic of the arts, the magic of the city is destroyed as views of the sea are blocked by their obscenely huge yachts and the sinking city sinks further.
This year, the Biennale was curated by Okwui Enwezor, important partly because of his role as Artistic Director of Documenta 11, where he enacted his committment to supporting developing countries to present work on the world art stage.
The Biennale takes place in two main venues - the Giardini (gardens) and the Arsenale (old naval base), but throughout the city every gallery, church and empty building houses a treasure hunt of satellite exhibitions. It takes at least 5 x 8 hour days to see the whole lot, and you're exhausted by the end, but it's THE PLACE to be excited and inspired.
In the below, I've documented all the sound works I found, in an attempt to share the experience.

Celebrate the spirit of Mexico and the delicious taste of tequila with the Don.
In a world of infinite choices, the most sought-after are the ones born of true substance. This is why on July 24th, taste makers and emerging titans are invited to network and socialise at the Don’s warm table during a series of events taking place in Johannesburg: Pantry by Gemelli from 12:30 PM to 16:00 PM; Cape Town: at the Grand Pavillion from 18:00PM to 21:00PM; and Durban: at Rockets,…

“You gotta twy the tostada, Haru! Its so good!”
The mexico pavillion offered pan de elote, which was cornbread topped with spicy chocolate, tostada de camarones, which was a shrimp tostada, and flautas de barbacoas, which was a tortilla topped with barbacoa beef.
There were also spain options, such as Paella de negra, which was squid ink paella, and a spanish charcuterie board.
Fleur looked at the options and decided on the pan de elotes
“Hey Haru, wanna know your Christmas present early?” Cali asked.
“Oh my gosh what is ittt!!!” Haru asked as she bounced up and down.
“We’re going back to Disney!! And you can bring three friends this time!” Cali said as Haru hugged her.
*fast forward a few days*
Haru invited Hikari, Fleur and Michi. Cali and Haru were all packed up and ready to go……at 6 in the morning. Cali was basically a zombie and Haru was on a rush of childish excitement. Cali drove Haru to pick up Fleur first.
Fleur got packed up, but she was nervous to go. It was her first time away from home.
