Day 7 - Perth

Today I rested and explored Perth. My first impression of Perth was underwhelming. There were some nice old stone buildings but nothing jazzed me. After wandering around town today, I've completely changed my opinion. It's a beautiful town (locals claim that it's the most beautiful town in Ontario) with historic stone buildings, influential Canadians that have lived here, art, culture and most importantly, food.

Town hall built 1863 - 1864.

The Matheson House built in 1840 is a great example of the stone architecture in Perth.

Homes dating back to about 1820 & 1850.

The Tay River runs through town supporting Stewart Park and busineses.

Art and culture is everywhere with flowers, murals, and theatre.

It wasn't until I was thirsty and hungry that I found the hidden gems of Perth. Perth is a "foodie find". The town has 2 craft breweries (making excellent beer, personally verified), a coffee roastery, numerous cafes, and unique restaurants. I think that if I stayed a couple more days, I'd discover more culinary gems and love Perth even more.

Fun story. I stopped into North Folk Cafe to buy some kombucha. I got talking to the server, Damon, and found out that he had a gravel bike and he rides the Trans Canada Trail. He's had trips through Waterloo, Lindsay, Haliburton, and a number of towns that I've spent time in. We compared notes on trail quality and lamented how portions of it have been torn up by ATBs. I later learned that his wife was Mexican, he's studying Spanish, and he visits Mexico every year. It was crazy to learn that we have been living in a parallel universe. I expect to see him again.

As with all shows, Beard and consulting chef Stephen Clarke created a bespoke menu for Blink-182 fans in the suites.

The premium menu, which cost $95 per person, featured California roll sushi, Happy Holidays hotdogs and salad with “dude ranch” dressing — a nod to the band’s second album, Dude Ranch.

A highlight was the Sombrero’s baked brisket burritos, a reference to Blink-182’s favourite Mexican restaurant in San Diego mentioned in 1997 hit Josie.

Beard said creating unique menus for each event was “just to have some fun” and keep things interesting for the Arena catering team, which swells from four full-time staff to an army of nearly 300 for concerts and Wildcats games.

ALBANY must-visit: throwback to when we visited Ocean & Paddock @oceanandpaddock // Delicious battered mulloway (aud18) with their complimentary in-house sauces. Ordered the grilled whiting too (aud26) but preferred the battered mulloway. The service here was second to none. We ordered and were waiting for our meal for 30+ minutes. Turned out they had put our order as takeaway instead of dine-in so the fish were actually in boxes instead of being served to us. They refunded and replaced our order with fresh ones. Also gave us a complimentary Mexican corn for being chill about it. I was perfectly ok with a replacement and did not expect a refund too. And then a complimentary corn on the house. Overheard the owner giving tips to a young server who just started and explaining that diners come to a restaurant for the full experience: food and service and that it was their job to make a customer’s experience good when they visit the restaurant. He also said that “in hospitality, you have the chance to make someone’s visit special and to make their day. How special is that?”. His prep talk made me smile - how special indeed it was overhearing the way this business owner trained his staff. We need more of this. Delicious food and just 💯 service here!
