I was fortunate to recently visit a wolf conservation center that breeds and releases wolves back into the wild. I thought of you and your Hunter analyses while taking these pictures:
These are Mexican Gray Wolves, and they nearly went extinct at a low of only 13 individuals, 7 of which weren't genetically related. Hunting, trapping, and poisoning were responsible for the drastic decline. Through a partnership with the USA and Mexico governments, the 7 unrelated wolves were bred in captivity and reintroduced into the wild.
Captive breeding programs are still ongoing, with pups fostered into wild dens to improve the genetic diversity of wild packs. Wild Mexican Gray Wolves now number at 250+ individuals, with 300+ individuals in captivity.
Several of the captive wolves must remain in captivity to prevent inbreeding in wild populations, since so many of their siblings have been released into the wild.
The captive wolves are kept as wild as possible (but with the benefits of vaccinations and other health interventions). At some of the captive breeding centers, a few wolves live in areas accessible to visitor viewing. Devoted staff and volunteers raise awareness for this keystone species.
The road to recovery wasn't easy for the Mexican Gray Wolf, and they're not off the endangered species list yet. They still face many challenges in the wild, including illegal hunting. But thanks to a lot of hard work, careful management, and growing public awareness, there is hope. Their numbers are steadily growing, and wolf packs are slowly reclaiming their historic range in Northern Mexico and the US Southwest.
The important things (and sometimes even just survival) aren't always easy, but they're worth it. I hope you keep hanging in there. Like the Mexican Gray Wolf, the world is a better place with you in it.
Bonus: Northwestern Gray Wolves, including a blond wolf (unfortunately not named Hunter) in the back.
Oh wow, beautiful. Thanks so much for thinking of me and sharing all this

Excerpt from this press release from the Center for Biological Diversity:
wenty-three wildlife conservation groups today urged the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Arizona Game and Fish Department not to remove a family of endangered Mexican gray wolves from just south of the Grand Canyon National Park. The agencies have announced they intended to capture and re-release the pack elsewhere.
In early July agency trappers captured and released a female wolf with a radio collar, intending to track her to capture another wolf she was seen with and move both wolves south of Interstate 40. Neither wolf has been reported as causing any problems. This week students in Arizona voted to name her “Hope” and her family the Kendrick Peak pack.
“What a blessing that Hope safely crossed the freeway and found this national forest land teeming with deer and elk, where she and her family can thrive if we let them,” said Michael Robinson, a senior conservation advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity. “Now it’s urgent that wildlife agencies halt their plan to move the Kendrick Peak pack and instead let these wolves live in peace and contribute to the natural balance and the sheer beauty of the Grand Canyon.”
“These incredible wolves should be allowed to be wild and free,” said Chris Smith, wildlife program director for WildEarth Guardians. “The Interstate 40 boundary makes no scientific sense, and that’s what these wolves are showing to the world.”
“As humans, we often feel we should make all the decisions rather than letting wolves show us what they need,” said Claire Musser, executive director of the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project. “Each wolf has a unique personality, and wolves like Hope and the Kendrick Peak pack are showing us that ideal habitat exists north of I-40, where the wolves want to be. If we are serious about wolf recovery, it's time to let our lobos lead.”
“The agencies justify their plans to remove the Kendrick Peak pack under the guise of keeping the wolves safe, but they could instead help to keep the wolves safe by educating the public, promoting livestock management that reduces conflict, and celebrating the return of these iconic animals to northern Arizona,” said Greta Anderson, deputy director of Western Watersheds Project. “We hope they change their plans and embrace this restoration opportunity.”

I've always loved animal symbolism, so here's some with the Dollars Trilogy characters + a Fistful of Dollars! 😱
(I will explain each one. 🙏🏽)
The Man With No Name as a coyote because coyotes are a symbol of cunning, intelligence, and adaptability. The coyote embodies the dual nature of life and represents both positive and negative qualities. It is also depicted as a trickster figure.
I think this fits TMWNN, especially being an anti-hero with his ways of being able to get what he wants by "playing both sides" throughout the trilogy. (With the Rojos and Baxters, Douglas Mortimer and El Indio's gang, and himself, Angel Eyes at one point, and Tuco.) Which gives him the cunningness.
He is described as intelligent a lot in the trilogy, and it's very clear with how carefully he plans and, again, how to get what he wants.
Adaptability because we see him in all sorts of settings: cities, deserts, villages, etc. and none of those have seemed to bother him one bit.
A Fistful of Dollars:
The Rojos as red wolves mostly because they travel in packs and are aggressive towards other canids, which we'll get to next.
(Edit: I just remembered Rojo also means red lmfao I swear that wasn't on purpose)
The Baxters as Coywolves because they travel in small family packs and compete with other canids such as wolves (the Rojos).
Both families are portrayed as powerful rivals like red wolves and even coywolves (likely because both animals live in the East United States).
Marisol, Julio, and Jesús (I couldn't fit Julio) as cattle because cows are quiet animals that symbolize humility and simplicity.
Which I thought was kinda fitting because with the lives they had to live, it gives them their humility.
Simplicity because the family follows TMWNN's orders with fairly little resistance.
For a Few Dollars More:
Col. Douglas Mortimer as a silver fox because silver foxes represent nobility, maturity, confidence, and charm.
I think the nobility for him comes from his long journey of avenging his sister and as a character that seems to have good personal and general morals.
The maturity because of his age, experience, and behavior.
Confidence is very easy to see lol he is very sure of his abilities, especially when he first meets Juan Wild in El Paso. (Man's got balls of steel, Jesus Christ)
This may be subjective, but the charm isn't that hard to see in him lmao
El Indio and his gang are Mexican wolves. Not just because they're a gang and wolves travel in packs, but also because those packs can be really big, like El Indio's gang. Plus, Mexican wolves tend to be highly social, which could be a stretch as a connection to El Indio and his gang, but they seem to accept new recruits to their gang pretty easily lol
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly:
Angel Eyes as a Gray fox. I promise I'm not being uncreative lmao. Gray foxes, given their competition in the wild, most likely tend to be more aggressive and dominant. Gray foxes also represent cleverness and adaptability.
In Tgtbtu, Angel Eyes can definitely be a very aggressive character, and the powerful part of the meaning of dominance is also very apparent in his character.
I find Angel Eyes's history of being able to track people down and identify them as a sign of intelligence.
Like, TMWNN, Angel Eyes can also be found in different settings and adjusts to them pretty quickly, especially given his job as a hitman.
(Sorry, it felt like I was grasping at straws on this one, but I couldn't find a lot on gray foxes, I just thought it was fairly fitting.)
Tuco Ramirez as a badger because they both are known for digging lol, but on a serious note, badgers are extremely aggressive towards other animals and have grumpy attitudes, which I find very fitting for Tuco lol.
I just wanted to include him lol. The Union Captain is a jaguar because jaguars can get intoxicated anddd yeahhh lol.
#dollars trilogy#a fistful of dollars#for a few dollars more#the good the bad and the ugly#the man with no name#man with no name#clint eastwood#ramón rojo#john baxter#marisol#julio#jesús#colonel douglas mortimer#douglas mortimer#lee van cleef#el indio#angel eyes#tuco ramirez#drunk union officer#no way Malix is actually mentioning a Fistful of Dollars???

what's the wolf story?
Aight, so, this was like, last year
Important thing to note, I LOVE wolves (hence my pfp)
So, we're just chillin' at the house, I don't have my contacts in. Dad doesn't have his glasses on, but mom has hers on
We let the dogs out (a cojack and blue heeler) and didn't check the backyard (we live on a 15-acre property)
The dogs started chasing something. Dad thought it was a coyote.
I knew, even without my contacts in, that is was a wolf
IT WAS 2 TIMES THE SIZE OF OUR BLUE HEELER, AIN'T NO WAY THAT WAS A 'YOTE-
I digress.
We get the dogs in (barely) and dad was looking up wolves in Texas
Mexican Gray Wolf popped up, and we played the call on the computer
The dogs went NUTS
I was freaking OUT I was so excited
Anyway, that's the wolf story :D
Haven't seen one since
#i honestly didn't expect anyone to see those tags lollll#took me a hot second like#HOW DID YOU KNOW I SAW A WOL- oh#lol#my posts

nobody asked but the reason loboier has that big dark saddle patch is 1) it’s a pretty common marking on mexican gray wolves and i thought their red/brown coat patterns were a good fit for roier but also and actually primarily 2) because according to a.d. the human dude has a big ol spider tattoo on his back!!
i like to think he got the backpiece to match his saddle patch :] planned it as a teenager, he thought it’d be so cool

Long ago when I was a teenager, I read a book about a wolf. In the book it stated that a lobo wolf was a lone wolf that had no pack. However, just last night I researched the term lobo and it said that a lobo wolf was a subspecies of the gray wolf in Mexico and southwestern United States. So I am a bit confused. Is this subspecies of wolf something new? And is lobo not used as a term for a lone wolf anymore?
I absolutely love your photos of the wolves.
THANK YOU ALL ...
The term "lobo" can indeed refer to different things depending on the context. In the book you read as a teenager, it seems that "lobo" was used to describe a lone wolf, meaning a wolf that does not belong to a pack. However, in the context of wolves in Mexico and southwestern United States, "lobo" refers to a subspecies of the gray wolf.
The Mexican gray wolf, also known as the lobo, is considered a distinct subspecies of the gray wolf. It is smaller in size compared to other gray wolves and has certain unique characteristics specific to its region. The term "lobo" is still used to refer to this subspecies.
So, to answer your questions, the subspecies of wolf known as the lobo has been known for quite some time, but it may be new information to you. Additionally, while "lobo" can still be used to describe a lone wolf in some contexts, it primarily refers to the Mexican gray wolf subspecies.

(via Mexican gray wolf numbers top 200 for the first time in recovery)
For the first time since efforts began to reintroduce the species into the wild, the number of Mexican gray wolves in Arizona and New Mexico has surpassed 200, with at least 241 wild wolves documented in 2022. Of those, 105 were counted in eastern Arizona.
This year’s count, released Tuesday, is up 23% from 2021, when the population minimum was recorded at 196. This marks the seventh consecutive year of population growth and a more than doubling in size since 2017, as interagency recovery and conservation work continue.

The gray wolf was was once widespread in Mexico, but was extirpated in the 1970s when the last few individuals of the Mexican wolf subspecies were captured for a breeding program. Since then, wolves have been released into northern Mexico and the southern United States a number of times, resulting in approximately forty to forty-five wild wolves currently living in Mexico.

Snippet share!
From my Horrible Goose Fest fic, Fragile Development:
(for context, they earlier had a conversation about Regulus's daemon after watching His Dark Materials. Here, they are on a date at the zoo.)
Remus’s face lights up as they reach the habitat where the wolves live. A pair of tortoises copulating very loudly the next exhibit has Regulus distracted, when Remus tugs on his arm, “Look, Reg, the wolf is playing!” The five-year-old Mexican Gray wolf is, in fact, playing with a large bone that he stops and chews on for a few seconds before tossing it a few feet and pouncing on it, like a giant killer puppy. Regulus is captivated by the joy on Remus’s face as he cheers and laughs every time the wolf tosses the bone. According to the plaque, wolves are a keystone species that bring balance to an ecosystem. They are intelligent, playful, and powerful. Wolves are among the few non-human species that educate their young and care for their injured. Regulus decides that if Remus had a daemon, it would almost certainly be a wolf.

MY OC SQUAD (info and drawings)
Sangria Coyote; Why the name "Sangria"? Besides being a cocktail and sounding goofy, in history or in other laguanges "sangria" means "bloodletting", "bloodshed", "bloodbath", etc... or well in latin means "sanguis" which is blood. So the name is basically "Blood Bath Coyote" or something like that, the association with blood just makes the squad look more lethal which goes along with Zura's quote for the Squad: "Doesn't matter how. We finish the mission." Why "Coyote"? This Squad is meant to be full of Wildcards. Besides normal squad mission (in and out of the Clover Kingdom), the members can be assigned or requested by other Captains to work with the squads frequently. If a member is always assigned to a squad, they can be promoted as an "official Wildcard". The Captain can be a "Grand Wilcard" too. So why "Coyotes" as the animal/symbol of the squad. Soen, which is Zura's spirit, is a canine. Coyotes are highly adaptable predators known for their intelligence and cooperative hunting strategies. Their adaptable nature and opportunistic behavior would likely be considered more of a wildcard nature which goes along with what Zura wanted for a squad. Their behavior is less predictable compared to wolves (which was the second option for the name). So yeah, a lethal coyote gang. Well now the members. The COYOTES.
(Forgot to note that her heels add more to her height as it's obvious so if her height isn't consistent... yeah)
So I didn't draw Touya's cat (Gray) or June's cat (Gingerbread), but Gray has "Sleeping Magic" (doesn't talk like Geister) and Gingerbread is just a normal cat. Anyways, These are an updated version, so here's some notes: -Before Hera becoming a captain together with Zura, her cape had a "round back" like the one Kai's wearing on the sheet, since she was the vice captain. Of course after becoming a captain, she changed for the one with the same back as Zura and Kai changed for the Vice Captain cape. -The outside members (Shau and Linus) have a different rope and Damon has one for his size but it's still different from the regular members' ropes.
-Geister (human) didn't want a rope so he just has the symbol on his suit. -When I created the characters, I gave them mainly madeup or japanese surnames (and some first names too) however I did want to change that... but I also wanted to honour my 15y ass so I kept it... anyways Kai would be Spanish (as the surname can tell ofc); Hera doesn't really have a place where she could be from since she is from the Witches' Forest; Touya would be Finnish; The twins would be Mexican; Geister would be British; Linus would be Belgian; Shau and Damon would be Italian (no they are not related); June doesn't really have a place she would be from;
-Damon, Shau and Linus were recently added to the squad (2022-2023) -Some characters have a "?" on their sexuality, since they aren't straight but don't exactly have a clear definition like Ryu, Touya, Hera and Zura. In other words, it doesn't take a big part... However Shau and Linus are kind of a suspicious duo- -In a possible Timeskip, Damon is the captain of a new squad called "Raven Crows" (yes I wanted to play on words and it sounds like "Ravenclaw") and he is dating Marie; Geister would be now Damon's caretaker; Zura would still be around in Magic Knight stuff but Kai would be the Captain of the Sangria Coyote; Hera would still be around but not involved as much in Magic Knight stuff but I do see her being a teacher; Touya and the twins would still be Coyotes; Shau and Linus I see them living in other Kingdom having their own journey but they would visit Damon; June would have her own squad too and be the "Aloe Sylphs"; sorry for the long post

The “rarest subspecies of wolf in North America,” the nearly-extinct Mexican wolf.
No Mexican gray wolf has traveled as far north and east since the wolf was reintroduced in 1998.
Headline and text excerpt from: KOAT7. “Historic capture of Mexican gray wolf in New Mexico.” 25 January 2023.
---
This week a young female Mexican gray wolf ran into northern New Mexico, passed over the arbitrary Interstate 40 boundary, and is continuing on her way toward Colorado, breaking records for the recovery program’s geographic extent and giving conservation groups a reason to celebrate. The wolf, named Asha by schoolchildren in an annual Pup Naming Contest, is originally from Arizona and part of the Rocky Prairie pack. She moved east of Interstate 25 late in 2022 and has since journeyed back and forth over Interstate 40 east of Albuquerque. “Wolves like Asha clearly show us that political lines like the Interstate 40 boundary are meaningless to a wolf, and the policies limiting wolf dispersal to the northern parts of Arizona and New Mexico must be revised. [...]” said Greta Anderson, deputy director of Western Watersheds Project.
Headline, image, caption, and text excerpt from: Chris Smith. “Conservationists celebrate northward-roaming Mexican gray wolf.” A press release from WildEarth Guardians. 11 January 2023.
---
A female Mexican gray wolf known as Asha was captured in northern New Mexico by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today. Conservationists deplored the capture, which ends the wolf’s historic northward journey. Asha will be held in captivity to potentially be re-released into the wild at a later date. Asha journeyed further north and east than any wolf has since reintroduction began in 1998 as she moved into the southern Rocky Mountains. [...] U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials say they intend to pair Asha with a male Mexican gray wolf and release the pair into Mexico. Conservation groups support Mexican wolf recovery in Mexico but have expressed concern about dispersing wild wolves being continually removed from the U.S. population.
Headline and text excerpt from: Chris Smith, Greta Anderson, et al. “Removal of Wandering Mexican Wolf Dismays Conservationists.” A press release from Center for Biological Diversity. 23 January 2023.

For context, here is the historic/former and current distribution range of the nearly-extinct Mexican wolf.
And here’s a look at “designated” wolf region in Arizona and New Mexico.
Here, you can see Interstate 40, an “arbitrary” political barrier to wolf movement. (The US government generally does not allow Mexican wolves to travel north of the interstate.)
