Day 1: Leaves/Race Against the Clock

It happened on a Tuesday morning.

At 8:15am on August 23rd, four gas bombs went off across National City. Two metro stations, the starting zone of Race for Rights, a pro-alien news center.  

The first alien at CatCo started coughing at 8:16. It was Gerry, the custodian. He felt a tickle in his throat. Then a burn. He was dead by 8:17. Patrick Erhaus, who’d stopped by to drop off lunch for his wife died next. Susan Erhaus followed him. Kara lasted longer than most. Long enough that she’s trying to perform CPR on Gerry by the time her throat starts itching. Long enough that she knows what’s coming.

It takes her a whole ten minutes to die. She tries not to panic. She really does. But it’s hard not to panic when your throat closes up, and you fall, and suddenly you’re face down on the rug next to Gerry whose lips have turned blue and who stares at you with empty unseeing eyes.

Her funeral is August 25th. There’s no body in the casket they lower into the ground. Her sister burned her corpse the day she died, and kept a candle lit all night for her to find her way home to Rao. They bury the casket anyway. It was hard, finding someone to do the funeral so quickly, and with so many people to bury. But they wanted it done. Better to bury the empty casket sooner, before people start wondering where her body is.

It’s a quiet affair. Her sister, her mother, a few friends. Lena Luthor stands to the side. She doesn’t cry. Alex Danvers goes home already drunk, and finishes off a bottle of whiskey. Winn and James try to follow her home, to look after her, but a shattered glass aimed at their heads convinces them to make themselves scarce. Alex will be calmer in a few days.

Cadmus takes credit. The video isn’t long, a brief speech about continuing the work after expelling the Daxamites. It hits Youtube barely 10 minutes after it interrupts the live service of every broadcast in National City. 

CatCo mourns. One of the junior reporters goes home early after he screams at a visiting intern who leans on an empty desk. Family members had already cleared them all out, but no one’s touched them since. And no one will. 

The carpet was replaced where the bodies had lay. The new square doesn’t quite match. 

Brusque, cold, and periodically rude, Snapper goes about his business almost as normal. He doesn’t go near the new carpet by the elevators. Snapper was the second to stand up to help behind Kara. He’d whispered to her while she choked, soothing promises they’d both known were empty. 

The list of the dead is posted in their newest edition, with a few anecdotes or in memoriums. Kara’s is the shortest.

The first to reach out to help. The last to let go.

Kara Danvers, you were the bravest of us. 

In the confusion after the attack, Supergirl is nowhere to be found. At first, people assume she’s just laying low. Avoiding getting caught up in the gas, same as Martian Manhunter. Then maybe she’s grieving. Or investigating. By the time a full week rolls around without an official statement or even sighting, rumors start spreading. On September 1st, Martian Manhunter takes the stage at his first public appearance since the attack, and delivers the news.

The city’s response is immediate and violent. Riots break out across the city, mourners protesting in the street meet anti-alien celebrations. Fires spread. By the mid-afternoon most of the city has shut down. Superman is spotted helping break out fights and put out the fires. A few people try to ask him for a comment, but he never touches down on the street level. 

It was only a matter of time before someone put two and two together. It was a joke at CatCo, how much they had looked alike. Now, with publicized lists of the dead, the physical similarity takes on a more serious meaning. The debates about the ethics of her work are fierce, if entirely ignored by the CatCo editors board. The closest to acknowledging it they come is in muttered conversations between staff. She completely crushed my stapler once. Said something about cheap manufacturing and laughed it off. I never thought about it. How could I not have thought about it? 

Visitors flock to her home in Midvale. Alex Danvers, officially an FBI agent, narrowly escapes a court martial only as a result of the publicity. The first bombing attempt at Alex’s apartment kills four people, but is poorly timed. Neither Alex nor her fiance are home when the blast hits. 

The camera feed inside CatCo goes viral. Supergirl’s last attempt at heroism. It plays on every station, sans two. CatCo’s reasons are obvious, but The Daily Planet sparks rumors. Instead of the footage, the Planet airs an official statement from Superman. People mumble if he’d pulled a deal to keep them from showing it. Really the decision had been made during an informal meeting in the bullpen. Clark Kent had threatened to quit if they aired it. Perry White is not typically an easy man to bully but Clark’s voice had echoed across the room, loud and clear and lower than Perry had ever heard it. Had he always been that tall? It even shuts Lane up for a few moments, miracle that is, before she, too, promises quit. 

The filmed statement from Superman is, for the most part, a professional and rehearsed affair. In an unaffected voice that seems deeply unnatural from Superman’s lips, reads a sanitized and politically undivisive statement on standing together during times of tragedy. It’s only in the last few minutes that his voice begins to crack.

Because of what she was, and the live we live, most of you never got the chance to know her as I did. So I’ve prepared— ahem. I’ve prepared a few fun facts I thought she wouldn’t mind me sharing. 

Her favorite color was blue. 

She really liked birds. Krypton didn’t have them. Her favorite was that bird of paradise with the big blue smiley face on his back. 

She loved math and chemistry. She liked to make her own paints. 

She hated brussel sprouts— wouldn’t go into a restaurant that sold them. Once, when she was 15 and we’d had an argument, she replaced all the food in my fridge with boiled brussel sprouts and cabbage. I never got the smell out of that fridge. And I still don’t know where she got them— if she cooked them or bought them somewhere. 

[There’s a pause. He seems lost in thought] 

She loved this place. She loved learning about this planet. I don’t think she ever really understood it, but she loved this world. She really— 

[He visibly collects himself. When his eyes meet the camera, they shine with tears.]

This world is dimmer without you. 

The L-Corp National City office closes by the end of the year. Lena Luthor herself is gone by the end of the week. The official statement cites financial concerns. The avoidance of public statement about the Kara Danvers issue is not missed by the public. 

Lena disappears for two months. When she reappears, it is at a police raid which captures half the upper administration of Cadmus, including Lillian Luthor. Lena gives no statement. The police publicly thank her for her service to the nation, and the next time she’s spotted it’s at a local alien dive bar with Alex Danvers.

Alex returns most of Kara’s personal effects to their mother, except the paintings. When people catch wind that Supergirl’s paintings are going on sale, the interest is intense. There are hundreds of buyers, each offering millions in exchange for just one of her works. In the end, the whole set of paintings are sold for just 5 dollars. The local alien art museum had refused to take them for free, but it’s difficult to out-stubborn Alex Danvers. Kara had liked it there. And it wasn’t like they had the money to compete with the other offers she was getting. 

There are dozens of paintings. The city skyline from above. Fallen leaves on the Midvale porch. The stars, constellations no astronomer can match. Waterfalls made of fire, with strange fanged plants. A glass city, curving and spiraling unnaturally under a red sky. A shattered planet. Green fire. Alex labels the ones she can identify, but there are others: planets, buildings, people, Alex doesn’t recognize. Captured memories of places seen once or twice, people half-forgotten, faded echoes from dreams. 

The museum is flooded with guests. Most the proceeds are donated to charities in Kara’s name, but even so, they have more money than they know what to do with. They bring in alien experts to help identify locations and people. They highlight new artists. They start running afterschool programming for local alien children, and invite them to share their own homes and places and people. Kara’s paintings sit in the center of it all. For the first time, Earth gets a look at Krypton. 

A year after the attack, the statue of Supergirl at the harbor gains a pair. The other statue is slight shorter, with hunched shoulders, a simple cardigan, and a small notebook in one hand. Her glasses are slightly askew.  The inscription is simple enough.

Indeed, his Philippine adventure started off with a bang. He played at a local basketball court in 'Brgy. 39, Zone 3, District 1' in 'Tondo, Metro Manila, National Capital Region'. The place was thronged with fans as the eagerness got the better of everyone to get a glimpse of the male YouTube star. It set the tone for a day that became truly frenzy-filled and filled with fervor.

Before going to the heart of the city, IShowSpeed made a quick detour to a local Chowking branch on Bustos Street, Sta. Cruz, this said city and province. The fast-food stop served as an emergency impromptu meet-and-greet location, where he was sat and hydrate himself in plain cold water, as eager fans were gathered outside to catch a glimpse of their online male YouTuber idol. He followed up his interest in Filipino culture by riding on top of a Kalesa, a horse-drawn transportation contraption, waving a Philippine flag to the delight of all that watched, helping spur his growing entourage on in excitement.

The joyride to BGC turned out to be a spectacle in its own right, as the male YouTube star replaced Kalesa with a motorbike, knowingly called as 'habal-habal'. The ride through busy Manila attracted even more attention; traffic came to a halt with fans trying to stay alongside their idol.

The chaotic night concluded before 7:30pm at 5th Avenue, BGC, in a Mercedes-Benz showroom, where IShowSpeed found refuge amidst a sea of people. Outside the unforgettable local dealership at Cats Motors Incorporated (CMI), chaos was at nothing less than pandemonium. If this day wasn't exciting enough, IShowSpeed teasingly posted to the internet media, including 'TeleRadyo Serbisyo: Dumaguete' and 'OneNETnews' that he would be meeting the Boxing legend and former senator "Manny Dapidran 'PacMan' Pacquiao", scheduled for tomorrow on Thursday (September 12th, 2024 -- Manila local time) when social media would once again go ablaze in the star-studded encounter.

In LIVE chats throughout the night, rumors are rife that the IShowSpeed Philippine Tour may well extend to the Visayas region on Day 2, including Cebu, Bacolod, Dumaguete and Siquijor. For now, unfortunately much however, Mindanao appears to be out of its itinerary.

IShowSpeed's arrival most certainly has left an indelible mark within the Philippines, and his livestream drew in more than 300,000 viewers from around the world, over half from the Philippines with 56% online audience share in this video sharing platform. And as this male YouTube star still goes on a rampage in this South East Asian adventure, one thing is for sure: IShowSpeed fever has finally swept the nation of the Philippines, and it isn't going away anytime soon.

This ongoing tour to South East Asia would be continued across the continent, first stopping in Thailand and later adding probably with the likes of Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia -- all for this month of September 2024.

Congress certified Biden’s win. Trump acknowledged it though the Twitter account of an aide (as his own account was still under a 12 hour ban).

The US broke 4,000 covid deaths in a single day.

While sheltering in the Capitol, 50 GOP senators refused to put on masks despite repeated requests.

A 7 foot tall “nonscalable” walls are being erected around the Capitol and will remain for the next 30 days (photo).

Records were stolen from the Capitol, possibly including “national security equities”.

The President of Zimbabwe criticized sanctions the US put on his country citing concerns about their democracy.

Biden admitted that if the rioters were members of Black Lives Matter they would have been treated differently by police.

Trump told the Georgia Secretary of State he will drop the lawsuits his campaign has filed against the office. He’s said it’s because he’s getting an “out of court settlement” ???

Gov. Larry Hogan said requests to send in the Maryland National Guard were rejected for 90 minutes. Two offers made by the Pentagon to send members of the National Guard and FBI to aid were also rejected by the Capitol police. The Capitol Police issued a short statement about the events of the 6th.

A Metro DC police officer said that off duty officers and members were part of the rioters and flashed their badges as they pushed into the Capitol.

House Homeland Security Committee is now asking the FBI and TSA to add perpetrators to the no-fly list.

A US Capitol Police officer involved in the riots at the Capitol has died.

Twitch disabled Trump’s account.

Shopify suspended all Trump shopfronts.

Youtube is removing all videos making false election claims and giving the creators strikes starting today.

Trump tweeted a new video acknowledging that there will be a new administration. He also claimed to be “outraged by the violence, lawlessness and mayhem” of the rioters despite yesterday telling them “We love you, you’re very special” in a now-deleted video. Trump also lied in this new video, claiming he called the National Guard immediately. Pence was the one who called in the National Guard after Trump was suspected to be blocking calls from others. Trump resisted making this new video until becoming worried he could face legal action for inciting the riot.

Trump suggested pardoning himself before leaving office. A WH top lawyer warned him he could face legal exposure for the riot given he had urged his supporters to march to the Capitol and “fight.”  DOJ says it won't rule out pursuing charges against President Trump for his possible role in the riot.

Pence opposes using the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office and has not discussed using it with anyone. Pelosi and Schumer called Pence to discuss this with him but did not hear back. Democrat members of the House Judiciary Committee as well as others also urged him to use it.

The Articles of Impeachment drafted by the House of Representatives currently has 112 cosponsors (there are 435 reps total).

Jeb! blamed Trump for the riot and told him to concede the election.

The remaining contestants gave their all in their song renditions, which will take place in a 5th season finale to conclude on Saturday night next week (May 20th, 2023). The LIVE results show featured numerous breathtaking performances that left coaches, studio audiences and viewers are on the edge of their seats.

South Luzon's Kiddie Pop Rockstar named Shane Bernabe from Santa Rosa, Laguna introduced an electrifying OPM (Original Pinoy Music) performance of Upuan by Gloc-9 and Jeazell Grutas, making her way to the final showdown as the top public votes with a spectacular average final voting score of 54.42% and was part of coach Bamboo Belardo Mañalac under Kamp Kawayan.

Sab Paica, who is a heartfelt singer from Santo Tomas, Batangas completed Zack Tabudlo's Binibini and was managed to secure a voting score of 18.74%.

And Princess Jilianne Cañete, who's also a versatile vocalist from Antipolo, Rizal sang her version of Magkaibang Mundo by Katrina Velarde, receiving a final voting score of 26.83%. Cañete and Paica are also a part of the said team coach overnight.

If Bernabe wins from the Semi-Finals to the Final Showdown against the last 2 young contestants as expected in the Grand Finals, it would be an immense accomplishment on the dot. The pressure would be high for the young singing sensation, as she could be going through off towards different gifted vocalists vying for the pinnacle spot.

The winner of The Voice Kids: Philippines (Season 5) will receive a cash prize of PHP1M (roughly U$D18,000) and a management & recording contract from Universal Music Group Philippines Inc. (UMGPi). Regardless of the outcome, all 3 semi-finalists under Kamp Kawayan of Mañalac gave marvelous performances deserving of recognition, and we cannot wait to look forward who will take her title as The Voice Kids: Philippines champion.

The Life of an Average Gamer

Good day, dear reader. My name is John Mark S. Opano and I am 17 years old. I am currently living in Quezon City and I am studying in New Era University as an 11th grader. I’ll stop beating around the bush and start this rabbit hole that is titled, “my life.”

It all started on May 12, 2004, when a certain boy was born on a hospital in Pasay City. I was out of my mother a tad too early and I had to be placed in an incubator for 11 days. After that went down, me and my family moved to a locale congregation known as Panaon. It is located in the province of Quezon. We would spend our lives there for 4 1/2 years until we moved to Tayabas, Quezon. This was when I became a kindergartener. By 2009, we moved to again to Canda, Quezon. Not going to lie, the entire experience I felt there was that of a fever dream. We only lasted there for 2 months until we moved to Pasay City had to stop a year of my school year because my older sister was diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus; it’s an abnormal opening where too much blood enters both the lungs and the heart and it can be found on fetuses. Her condition was only found after 9 years and she didn’t realized it. Thankfully, the surgery went well and she was cured from it. We moved to Sagana Condo and that was where I spent my 1st and 2nd grade in New Era Elementary. By 2012, we had to move again. From Metro Manila all the way up to Cagayan Valley. We moved to Old Centro, Isabela and that was where I spent my 2nd and 3rd grade years. This was also the first time when I got bullied because I didn’t know how to tie my shoes back then. In 2013, we moved yet again but this time to Nueva Viscaya. Diadi was a huge step up for me. I mean, yeah, the bullying worsened but this was when I participated in contests. Well, forced to participate in contests but it felt astounding. Moving to Echague, Isabela was calming for me. The bullying drastically lessened, I had my first best friend, first crush, first playwright, first wifi I ever used. No one was forcing me to go contests except, for the sports writing one. Echague remains a good place in my heart but moving to Burgos was an absolute pleasure. This was when I became a hymn choir for the worship service. 7th grade was fun, too. I don’t have to do group dancing activities because my groupmates kept forcing us to practice at their homes, and every time it happens, mom disagrees. The teachers made me clean the classroom instead, which, is a win-win for me. I always liked cleaning. This was when I also had my first group of friends. Calaocan was when I became extremely active in church duties. A small locale with a lot of people, yet so little time. After 2 months, me and my family were finally going back to Metro Manila. Well, sort of. 

F. Manalo, San Juan. Beautiful house of worship, extremely nice people, ghosts in the hallway. One of the most Ying-yang places I’ve ever been in my entire life and it only lasted less than a month. By 2018, we moved back to Sagana Condo, back when our 5 year-stretch in Isabela started. 8th grade felt like a breath of fresh air. No bullying, nice teachers, clean classrooms. It was nice to be in. That was when I met my group of friends whom I’m still friends with ‘till this day. 9th grade was the same except the extra added friends on my group. This was also the first time we had to make a game for our school fair. Our game trivia-type of game and a lot of people went on board with it. When we were “forced” to watch a German live concert in our school, we were “livid.” The band was called AB Syndrom and their music was a bop. I went to their Youtube channel from time to time. Even though I can’t understand a single word they sing. 

I think we all know what happens after all of this. The pandemic happened and we can’t go out. I was devastated when it was announced that we can’t do worship services in worship buildings. We still did it in our homes but it felt like something was missing. 10th grade felt like a dream but at least I still have someone I know when I entered 11th grade. I’m talking about you, Alegre. 

Now, I’m in 11th Grade, studying through google meets, online modules, and doing activities like these.
