kat talks: circus
if you're unfamiliar, it's just my reactions to the songs/mvs. i'll update it with the rest of the album (including jpn vers) when they're out!
circus
okay so this is my second listen but i wasn't really paying attention the first time due to circumstances lol
is the opening... beatboxing? i think it is???
changbin never fails to impress i swear and also his HAIR
also the whispers >>>
HAHAHA the ??? the sound just before lix's part HAHAHA its such a *pokes tongue out mockingly* kind of thing like really childish
lix's outfit is my absolute fav i s2g
??? hyunjins??? tone???? tone or timbre i always get cONFUSED BUT I LOVE IT
side note but since oddinary i think hyunjin has really.. solidified (?) as a rapper? not that he wasn't a good rapper before (and who am i to say any of this, anyways) but his raps in oddinary (venom, muddy water) and in circus really have like. a Him touch to it (capital H for god Him Hyunjin coincidence i think not)
okay i never manage to explain this properly but i love the. sound distribution. idk. from the beginning to minho's "bring out the fire" and then to lix's bit. in the beginning, the sound distribution/layout or whatever goes from being very forward-central to then being closer to the centre but wider (like.. an amphitheatre???? like a U shape infront of the centre???) and then when it gets to lix's it becomes a very full sound (like a D??????) man idk okay 😭
imagine like. a netball or bb hoop right and the D around the hoop. the beginning is a line of three people standing at the top of the D, infront of the hoop, and then "bring out the fire" is a line of people along the D-line, and then lix's bit is everyone running towards the goal so that it's full??????????????????? anyways moving on.
idk what minho says between lix and hyunjin's bit but its the cherry on top ok
the prechorus WAIT i love. i love how jeongin's two lines descend at different intervals. um. im forgetting how to describe things. but like. the second time it descends differently. like it goes (incorrect notes) 1-6-4 1-5-3??? i think
side note 2: i want this so bad to be a c harmonic minor but idk i havent done the whole thing yet i've only figured out jeongin's prechor lines. but i dont think the songs harmonic :(
(update: it's... f.. minor???????)
seungmin's 'round and round and round and round' reminds me of. gods menu
WAIT wait was that the prechor or is sung's bit the prechor idk i LOVE love sungs bit
wait im so confused about the song structure i need tor elisten later AHHAA
the change when it goes to changbins bit??? digging it so bad man
why do they keep doing the cutouts of minho AHAHA i mean we love him
WAIIIIIIT SO sung's top is like. long. and has the detailing at the bottom and then theres a corset /over/ it OHHH i thought it was all attached JDKSDJK
also i love the bass in sungs bit and the way he ends his verse
MINHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO yes
circus so they included minho's nat geo dance thingy w the hands to clown him methinks (jkjk)
wait. jisung eyeliner?
chan maam who put u in that jacket and tie (?) combo 😭😭
CENTRE JEONGIN IS SO FUCKING GOOD
i love hyunjin's cropped blazer w the chain SOOOOO much more than the dual-texture (?) jacket blazer thing w the tassels
all the cropped blazers in here are making me crazy i love it
texture change for the bridge i love it and i love the texture at jeongin's bit even more like thats so GOOD the cymbal is NJDVKSNVSDK i love lvoe
shut up the shot of minho lowering the hands
YESSS THE LAUGH AND THE CIRCUS THEME
there are so many kids
WAIT. wait. i need to rewatch us (the movie) i htink it might be an us reference
overall i LOVE it and i would love to hear a drum and slap bass cover but i also would love to hear drum and slap bass covers of every song in human history so
your eyes
can't believe i'm subjecting myself to this mv again NJVFKVSK havent listened to it a second time since lol
young wings keys but sadder
the melody.. reminds me of smth... like. either slice of life anime ending or an extremely long shounen anime ending (im looking at naruto and fairy tail)
but hey hyun vocals <3 <3 <3
chans high notes <3 <3 <3
WAIT THERE ARE STRINGSS skz orchestra arrangements when (i can make a whople separate post about orchestral arrangements for skz songs)
@ changbins verse: that is a very tangy (i forgot the word but it sounds like tangy) guitar
but the transition between lix and bin's verses was so seamless wtf
sung rapping in semiquavers broke down the flow so nice imo. idk if i said that right
@ jeongin's verse... the backing vocals... chan...? but it almost sounds like minho when it's higher. the lower "ohh" sounds like channo
okay not that i don't enjoy the song but i just really dont have as much to comment on fndjskfdsj
(okay tbc w the other songs when they come out!)

2.04: Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things - My Rewatch Review
This episode showcases everything I love about Dean. It is a rollercoaster ride of characterization for him, and everything he says and does drags the audience by the heartstrings through what he is feeling as he continues to try and come to terms with his father’s death and the uncertainties surrounding it. And I love that Sam sees what Dean is going through, and backs off when he feels it’s necessary, and pushes Dean when he feels it’s necessary, and is just genuinely trying to be supportive of his brother. In later seasons, when the narrative forces them apart over and over again, I always miss the times like this, when they had each other’s backs and were more open with one another, and I am always anticipating getting to the much later seasons, when they finally come back together and start acting more like the team that we see in these early seasons. It didn’t escape my notice that Dean didn’t tell Sam everything about how he was feeling—he still hasn’t said anything about what John told him before he died—and I’m pretty sure that the only reason why he opened up to Sam about any of it was so that his brother would accept his explanation and his continued erratic emotions and stop pressing him to open up about it, but the fact that they are willing to talk about these things at all is refreshing, and it is something that I am glad the show returned to in the later seasons after letting them get so closed off from one another emotionally for so long.
I never found the monster-of-the-week story in this episode particularly compelling outside of the way it is used to get Dean to finally open up to Sam about his feelings, but there were two things that stood out to me on this rewatch that seemed worth mentioning. The first one is that I had never really thought about it before, but Neil was at least as much of a monster as undead-Angela was. We don’t exactly know the particulars of the ritual he used, or if he knew what would come back, but it seems fairly obvious that the Angela that is kissing him and saying that she loves him is not the same as the Angela who was just his friend before she died. And it should go without saying that any sort of supernatural manipulation of a person’s emotions like that, even if they are dead, is not okay. And even if he didn’t do anything directly, just bringing her back and making her beholden to him as a result was also not okay. It would have almost been forgivable if it had been her father, because the love there would have been shared, or maybe if it had been her actual boyfriend who had done so out of guilt, because the love there had once been reciprocated, but for Neil to do it due to unrequited love just makes him a creep.
I also noticed during this rewatch that this is the second time this season that they have mentioned a trait about a monster that can also be applied to vampire lore, while not being true about vampires in the Supernatural universe. First, with the rakshasa, it was that it couldn’t enter a home unless being invited, and here, with the zombie, it was that she could only be stopped by what amounted to a stake through the heart. This further backs up my theory that, at one point, vampires were cunning and prevalent enough that they were able to mislead a lot of people (possibly including hunters) into ascribing traits from other monsters to them that weren’t actually true so that they would be less likely to be killed when people decided to go after them. And given that vampires were also used as the first ‘sympathetic’ monster, methinks that they are not quite as close to extinction as hunters have been led to believe—they are just very good at hiding and staying off of hunters’ radar. That, at least, would explain how, by later seasons, they end up thriving.
