Monday Musings: The Ordovician Meteor Event
Hello and welcome to another Monday Musing. Today we are going to learn about the Ordovician Meteor Event which was a dramatic increase in the rate at which L chondrite meteorites fell to Earth about 467.5±0.28 million years ago.
Tumblr media
What the heck is an L chondrite meteorite? Glad you asked. Chondrites are stony meteorites that have not been modified by either melting or differentiation of the parent body. L chondrites are ordinary chondrites meaning they are some of the most common meteorites found on Earth (87% of meteorites are O chondrites). There are three types of ordinary chondrites: H, L, and LL. This comes from their iron metal content. H is high in iron, L is mostly iron silicates with some (less than 10%) iron and LL has almost no iron.
Tumblr media
During the middle Ordovician, dozens of L chondrites hit about 30 degrees north of the equator...right where Laurentia and Baltica were. According to a 2019 study, this temporary increase in the impact rate could have been caused by the destruction of the L chondrite parent body that was 150 kilometers (93 mi) in diameter and orbited in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
A 2024 study found that all of 21 studied craters from this event were at the time within 30° of the equator. Impactors directly from the asteroid belt would be expected to produce a random distribution of craters, so this suggests that the event may have been caused by an asteroid that passed within Earth's Roche limit and broke up into a ring system, material from which then deorbited and formed the craters. Below is a demonstration of how that would work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was speculated at one point that this event contributed to the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (maybe even started it) but many also question that and say it was just a separate event altogether. It is also speculated that it contributed to the Hirnantian or End Ordovician Glaciation.
The breakup of the L-chondrite parent body caused a rain of extraterrestrial material onto the Earth and  increased stratospheric dust by 3 or 4 orders of magnitude and may have triggered the ice age by reflecting sunlight back into space.
Tumblr media
A 2024 study suggests that rather than a complete breakup or outright impact, the L-chondrite parent body may have had a near-miss encounter with Earth, causing a part of it to break off from Earth's gravitational pull. This debris may have formed a planetary ring, and down-falling debris from the ring may have shaded Earth from the sun's rays and triggering significant cooling. Evidence for this comes from the fact that craters dating from the Ordovician meteor event appear to cluster in a distinctive band around the Earth instead of being randomly scattered, which may have come from debris falling to Earth from the ring. This ring may have lasted for nearly 40 million years.
Either way, there was some sort of meteor event during the middle Ordovician and it may or may not have had a big impact on life at the time. (Pun intended). Tune in tomorrow for a quiz on meteorites! Fossilize you later!

Meteorite Strike Captured by Doorbell Camera in Canada
A doorbell camera on a Canadian home captured rare video and sound of a meteorite striking Earth as it crashed into a couple’s walkway.
When Laura Kelly and her partner returned home after an evening walk in July, they were surprised to find their walkway littered with dust and strange debris, according to the Meteoritical Society.
They checked their security camera and saw something slamming against their entrance way, producing a cloud of smoke and a crackle.
The pair reported what they found to the University of Alberta's Meteorite Reporting System and the curator Chris Herd, who examined samples of the debris to confirm its interstellar origins.
Meteorites are bits of space rock that hit Earth after surviving a trip through its scorching atmosphere.
About 43,500 kilograms of similar debris strikes Earth every day, according to NASA, but is much more likely to plunge into an ocean than onto someone's front stoop.
While cameras have captured meteors streaking through the sky, it's rare to capture the sound of a complete meteorite strike on video and this footage is believed to be a first.
The space rock, officially registered Monday, was named Charlottetown after the city on Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada where it struck.

It was a good thing that Izar hadn't learned to cast Meteorite of Astel earlier, because once she did, she'd get into the habit of going outside and spamming that sorcery whenever she was really angry. (She happened to be, occasionally.)
Tumblr media
Ensha would usually keep his distance and just watch her cast furiously, sigh whenever she'd hit some nearby structure, and patiently wait for her to eventually lower her staff–out of breath and magical focus. He'd then simply sign, "Better?" She'd nod, take a deep breath and be all quiet and composed again, just your friendly neighborhood astrologer. And sometimes ... "... you're good with gravity sorceries yourself, aren't you? I could teach you this one, Ensha." A blank stare, dark eye sockets seeming to widen, then a hastily signed reply. "... Please don't."
