Some headcanons I have about King Dedede, Captain Vul, and their species!

Many, many millions of years before the tragedy that befell the dinosaurs, alien researchers tried to study them, and did not plan for their escape from the research facility, and eventual takeover of the planet! Through many years of adaptation to the new planet, you see the feathers and bird-like feathers we know and love in King Dedede and others!

Vestigial tail + spikes

A far cry from the reptile tails of old, the tails of current day are stubby with little movement, and in a few generations will likely be completely gone.

These guys are descendants of dinosaurs! The tails had been used for mobility, balance, but especially fighting. This connotation created ripples in the culture of what the vestigial tail means for avians, no matter how stubby and useless it is in present day! Since hollow bones had started to emerge in the species, anything that could possibly crush them is considered taboo, including showing off tails freely. A lot of them pretend they don’t exist!

Prehensile feathers

The feathers at the tip of the wings are modified fingers that can grab! If you were to push back the feathers, you would even see vestigial talons that are either too small to be any threat, or kept trip for proper appearance. All of the avians have thumb-like digits as well, but their grip is not a precise as our own.

Avians of high social standing often commission and wear enchanted gloves to aid with their weak grip, and it is why Dedede isn’t seen with his feathers and can use his hammer!

Spines + tail usually covered up

For this study, I focused on just the bodies themselves, but i wanna delve deeper into the culture they have! In particular clothing is important. They usually keep their tail and spines covered up for modesty and cultural norms—the spines are seen as weapons and only shown when living a life of battle! Even Dedede who gets into fights often doesn’t want to show them, but there is exceptions. The gray star warrior having their tail out is due to the position they have in the army. They dedicate their life to a battle. Other factors include needing high mobility! Some avians in gymnastics or on rescue teams, and other professions where mobility is essential are exempt from this rule, but they often have a robe or cover-up when not performing the task.

For Dedede: adapted to be a water-type bird, has flippers and webbed feet, and is unable to fly. His eyes are bigger than normal for the purpose of being able to see in dark waters with barely any light, although the trade off is his long distance vision leaves much to be lacking. His choice of hammer as a weapon is barely any thought to us, but a taboo one in avian society. His distance from any others of his kind is in part due to his refusal to put it down.

For Vul: he is a an avian capable of flight!! This is a rarer trait. He feels at home in the sky, and his eyes even in his old age are unparalleled to anyone else in his crew. Vul, like dedede, normally covers his tail, especially because even though he lives a life of battle, he is rather old fashioned and does not want to admit it, despite being captain to a crew of knights.

For the Star Warrior: a unnamed individual who would turn heads if they walked on their home planet looking like that. Metal armor in of itself is unusual because most avians hate to weight themselves down too much to fly, even if they aren’t a flying type. Under the helmet they have a bright red crest, and for the long legs I based them off of a Sandhill Crane. Their long legs are the best example of another trait I didn’t get to touch on yet: these guys have feathers covering the legs! Where in real life birds usually have scales, these guys have a gene which gives them feathers everywhere but the feet. Similar to silkie chickens or pigeons with muffs!

Most of these guys have some kind of feathered crest above their eyes! It helps keep sun and water out of their face, similar to eyebrows.

We had this brainrot going on that in one AU Wiosna and Kurt get married and Aon (@ouroboros-hideout OC) would gift Wiosna a knife as a wedding gift AND BORO DECIDED TO MAKE IT REAL?! So these are pictures of Shooting Star the most beautiful knife I have ever seen (one day I will be rich and commission it irl out of metal) that was dedicated to Wiosna by Aon 😭💜 I can't even express how impressed I am by the amount of thoughtfulness put into this design! Boro even wrote a note "from Aon" that explains it (I will drop it below!) and Rev even paid attention to such a small detail like me saying that purple is Wiosna's color 💜 AND THE LITTLE LYNX LOGO THAT IS AON'S ANIMAL!!! Here's Aon describing it:

Candy Corn

She's the oldest of the magical girls. She is 25, a college drop out, is autistic, suffers from anxiety and depression, self-esteem issues, and is very burned out. Her name is Carmela. She received her SweetMagia powers on accident

She lives with her dad, who divorced her mom when Carmela was just 1 year old, which caused a lot of trauma for Carmela growing up. Her dad is a workaholic and sees his daughter as useless since he sees her hobbies as a complete waste of time.

Despite this rut she's stuck in, she still wants to pursue her goal of becoming a professional fashion designer and photographer. She's a huge weeb and constantly watches anime. She went through a goth phase back in high school and she sometimes embraces that. She participates in witchcraft to try to cope with life.

She deeply cares about the well-being of others because she doesn't want others to suffer as much as she has. She'll share stuff often despite her not being financially well off. She works as a pizza delivery girl.

She became a magical girl when a meteor crashed through her car's windshield, and a fairy revealed herself to Carmela. When her magical fairy Croakus, who looks like a frog, asked her to close her eyes and to think of a candy, she ended up looking like candy corn since she felt unloved just like the candy. From that point, she was caught in the crossfire of a war between the Sacchari and the Bitterlings. The Bitterlings believe in plunging the entire world into darkness, a constant state of negative emotions, for life to to achieve perfection.

Sometimes she has to go and get a real (missing-nin) job because there's something she needs that she can't get with her regular judicious application of fraud and genjutsu. (Annoying.) When this happens, she almost always just impersonates whichever low level missing-nin she was most recently stalking, so it's a pretty common experience for, like, chuunin-level missing-nin to find their CVs expanded without any input of their own.

Imagine you're just Some Guy with a mangled forehead protector. You roll into a major city where every member of the criminal underclass recognise you on sight. You slowly piece together the shape of the job everyone is convinced you did. Uh-huh. You see. You sure seem to have done that, but there must be some mistake—maybe they want someone who just sounds a bit like you? No? Hmm. Yeah. Subverting the ownership of 40% of Water country's wharfs sure does seem like it would explain the sudden meteoric rise in the price on your head...

Unfortunately, a meteoric rise in bounty price without a concomitant rise in skill spells disaster for Some Guy.

The nameless missing-nin genjutsu master (who... probably does have names, given to her by other people) is always a little annoyed to be dragged away from her research, but she usually takes it philosophically. Oh, sure, she's having an impact on her own data both by publishing her research and by acting in the marketplace, right? But on the other hand, she's a missing-nin. She's an industry insider, isn't she? And bounty hunters are a vital part of the network anyway... But she has some pretty complicated epistemological feelings about how possible it is to be both observer and observed.

Anyway, if you are Some Guy, you probably get cornered by a bounty hunter in a few weeks' time. And you probably aren't even in deep enough to know what happened.

There's just such a steep learning curve for missing-nin? The industry is hard. I think someone published a paper about that once...

Obligatory Long Dawntrail Post

I wanted to wait a while to say anything and let my hype die down first, but I think it's finally time. Overall, I really liked it! Especially how it relates to my WoL, which is more what I want to focus on because the internet has had enough hot takes about Wuk Lamat. More rambling under the cut:

To get the big picture stuff out of the way, I have always felt that this game is at its best when it's leaning into its politics. I'll admit it's risky to do from a commercial standpoint in this very polarized world, and sometimes I think it misses, especially when they try to touch on something that Japan has a huge blind spot towards culturally. But many of its best story beats, in my opinion, are the political ones. I'll always remember playing patch 2.55 for the first time, and that moment of realization I had watching Nanamo and Alphinaud both face consequences for their well-intentioned idealism, that we may not solve all the worlds' problems through the power of friendship and being really good at fighting alone. Obviously, the power of friendship is a big part of the game's central ethos, but it isn't enough. It was a hint at the underlying pragmatism of the game's politics that I really wasn't expecting from an MMO, especially one that has as many cheesy hopeful feel-good moments as this one tends to. I am also a big Stormblood liker overall, as much as I acknowledge it had serious problems with the pacing and character writing. I think the comparisons to Dawntrail are fair, but I like the same things about both of them. They're both best interpreted through the lens of actual world history and current events, and I think seem more shallow on the surface than they really are if you're not paying attention to the smaller moments with minor NPCs during the "exploring the new zones" bits of MSQ. I'd argue that Dawntrail did an even better job with its political commentary than Stormblood did, and I had a feeling it would when they mentioned they were hiring sensitivity readers. I think they did a great job of addressing a lot of the things that made people uncomfy about Stormblood by having the Scions take the backseat and letting the Turali people have their own agency in the story. I have a lot more opinions on the politics in Dawntrail overall, but I think other people have mostly said everything I want to say about that already. More interestingly, I think this expansion really surprised me with how well a lot of my character decisions with Zoisite, my WoL, ended up paying off. Because I hadn't really thought of Zoisite as an OC until early Heavensward, I tried to think about her backstory through the lens of what would make her the most interesting protagonist for the themes and plotlines I thought the game was trying to set up. I decided to make her half Doman, with a foreign adventurer father, and with an older half-sister that spent most of Zoisite's life fighting against Garlemald. During the events of 1.0, while her sister was busy with the XIVth legion and Project Meteor, Zoisite ended up more of an adventurer instead, and entangled with Minfilia and the Path of the Twelve because of the Echo, which was unique to Zoisite. I wanted her to have a personal connection to the Garlemald plotline so that it felt deserved for her to be the one to "resolve" it, but explain why she was willing to go along with these other diversions during ARR and HW that weren't related to it, too. Obviously, the game itself had a similar idea with Lyse, but I thought the parallel was actually kinda nice and it was a big part of why I ate SB up as much as I did. As much as SE and the writers have no real control over this, these accidental predictions and coincidences have honestly been a big part of why I have enjoyed FFXIV as much as I have. My favorite moments in the game are when I'm wondering if the writers are reading my google docs for ideas. It makes me feel like I'm doing a good job picking up on subtext.

But aside from her backstory, I let MSQ itself determine most of Zoisite's arc, and I very rarely find myself "retconning" MSQ vs the other way around. She is just trailer WoL/Meteor in most ways, with the big exception being Feldspar's existence from the late HW patches on. Because Feldspar is my RP character and I'm mostly writing 20ish years post-MSQ, Zoisite's primary role as a character has always been Feldspar's estranged birth mother first, and MSQ WoL second. When I'm experiencing the game through Zoisite's perspective, however, I constantly have to reconcile these two roles, and it has honestly been very difficult to do that during ShB and EW. It's hard to justify the tedious fetch quests when the stakes (for her, at least) are so high. It made it very hard for her to care much about the ancients, or the people on the First, or Zenos's weird one-sided obsession with her, even when the game was trying to force her to. As much as possible, I've tried to rationalize away these character inconsistencies as an intentional distraction on her part, and that the excuse of saving the world and helping people has been keeping some of that fear and guilt about "abandoning" her son at bay for a while now.

And then Dawntrail really just came out and addressed it for me, in a way I was not expecting. It presented itself from the outset as a "vacation" from the high stakes, where Zoisite was just kinda standing in the background most of the time, along with a VERY HEAVY THEME of parental abandonment to force her to reckon with her issues. She spent all of Dawntrail wondering if Feldspar would feel the same way about her that Krile and Wuk Lamat feel about their parents, and see it as a noble sacrifice for his best interest, or if he would resent her for abandoning him without explanation like Gulool Ja and Koana do. Most importantly, it was much harder for Zoisite to pretend that she had no other choice than to give Feldspar up when she was constantly facing the reality that she could step down at this point and the world would probably keep turning without her protecting it. Unfortunately, it's too late for her to change her mind about Feldspar, both because Feldspar's narrative demands it, and also because years have passed and she can't just casually ask for him back even if she wanted to. Zoisite had no choice but to mourn and let it go, and I think watching Cahciua and Erenville's interactions in Living Memory also helped with that, because she kinda got a glimpse of the type of mother she most likely would have ended up as, and saw that motherhood might not have worked out as perfectly as she'd started fantasizing about in retrospect. Like Cahciua, she cares the most about seeing the world and helping people, and doing what's "right," and she would always struggle with putting anyone else (including her own son) ahead of that, if it came down to it. Without another parent in the picture to help, there was no route that wouldn't end with Feldspar feeling abandoned by Zoisite in some way. All-in-all, I liked how this gave me a satisfying conclusion to that arc for her, and a nice refresh for future expansions. I'd rank it on par with SB and ShB for how much I enjoyed them, with my overall ranking being something like HW > SB-ShB-DT > ARR > EW. There's also that minor detail about the Alexandrians having rock names, and Zoisite's existing backstory that her name is a family naming convention from her father's side, and that she doesn't really know where he's from. I have yet to figure out how to make that connection, but man. The possibilities.

Since you asked, here are some personal Saphira headcanons! (And some more, too!)

Now, before we begin, we have to admit: we've done a lot of lore and world reconstruction for our Reborn AU, which we call Reborn: Rainbow! So if it sounds wacky, it's an AU. Let's go! (There's a lot!!!)

Our biggest ship for Saph is Saphira x Victoria! We think they'd be so cute together and help each other cope in times of need. Saph enrolls for Apophyll Academy to help her with her anger, where she meets Vicki! Their relationship is very slow burning, and it takes a very long time for them to realize they're really in love. Also, Saph x Mako is so so super cute! >W<

Post-championship, Saph remodels her gym to be the Reborn region's official League Conference Arena! She moves her gym battles to Route 4, where she and Charlotte battle in doubles as the last position in the non-E4, specializing in Dragon- and Rock-types! (Charlotte changes her type specialty to rock in Rainbow). They get their own field, too! Laura and Bennett still battle in doubles in the E4, but they have a custom field now!

Along with her new gym, she becomes the sherpa of the Tanzan Mts, so she can still protect her family! She also watches over the mountain range on Route 4 and just gains a fascination for mountains in general.

She wants a family of her own sometime in the future, but she's not ready for motherhood just yet. Vicki, not so much - she can wait a couple more years! XD

Rather than being missing for ten years, Monty and Caroline (the Belrose parents) have been missing for closer to seven years. The Belrose triplets are in for a pleasant but shocking surprise when they discover their parents aren't actually dead, only missing, due directly to the fault of Team Meteor (including some new Meteor OCs we've made!) They're eventually reunited sometime after the events of the game, since we love ourselves a happy ending!!!

She opens up a little bit more in the post-game but still keeps her protective and reserved personality. Vicki thinks this is endearing!

you may have talked about this before but i'm very curious how olivia got into the mix, both in fiction and in meta :0

also do you have any animals you associate with the squad? like not necessarily fursonas but if the shoe fits 🤔

also also, do their colors have significance to their personalities/names/etc? as someone who also has a set of color coded ocs i always love to see how folks decide what colors to put with each character :3

Olivia is a fascinating facet of the Stardust Scouts story because in zer earliest iterations ze was NOT such a major character like ze is now!!

Ze used to be this minor character in a scrapped arc about the Scouts going to Mars in order to confront an opposing, alien group of martian magical girls and get them to join their side in protecting the galaxy instead of trying to fight them on their home turf. This arc doesn't exist anymore, I think the opposing alien force is further away from Earth than that & are sending basically drone/scout enemies to Earth to try to conquer/destory it.

These were the original martians' designs! They have music associated with each of them because the main 4 Stardust Scouts were originally designed based on a "randomize your playlist and design a character based on the first 3 songs" prompt, so I figured the rival magic girl team should be inspired in the same way.

The conceit of the martian arc was that our MCs the Earth scouts would've used their magic to blend in with the martians w/disguises. Inversely, once the martians were on their side they would come visit Earth and wear their own disguises as well.

Can you guess which of these martians eventually became Olivia as we know zer? I will give you a hint

Zer original role was the skeptic martian cleric/priest of the martian scouts, who was the most distrusting of the earth scouts having any good intentions, and I believe might've also had a toxic yuri thing going on with either the pink or blue martian.

All the other martians here never got developed much because Olivia, as the Tak Expy, meant ze had a lot of my favorite character design tropes going on and I wanted to specifically explore those more and ze became the obvious favorite haha. After that Zer role just kept increasing over time.

I think the most major development though was definitely when I decided ze could keep the toxic yuri energy originally planned for zer, but with One Of the Main Scouts instead... Tabitha and Olivia have HISTORY BABEY!!!!

(Fun Fact: My files say this was drawn Oct 2019, soooo... 1 month after the Steven Universe Movie came out. Spinel got her fingerprints all over this damn character, for real, she's one of my voice claims for zer)

This was the point where I decided Olivia was not an alien anymore, but a human who had been abducted BY aliens back when ze was a teenager and best friends with Tabitha. The both of them were private school goody two shoes with parents who put way too many expectations on them to get perfect grades. They would start breaking the rules a little bit by going out at night in the car Olivia got as a gift for good grades + passing zer drivers exam (important to note, Olivia used to go by she/her bc ze picked up new, alien genders while out in space)

The two sneaking out once in a while turned into most nights which culminated in the both of them being out in the woods when one of the Inciting Incident meteors with the Scouts' special magic maguffin rocks crashed nearby. Olivia was bolder than Tabitha at the time so ze investigated and got both magical girl powers and abducted by the enemy aliens who had been chasing the meteor at the same time. Tabitha was left absolutely shaken up and in the middle of a missing persons case where she couldn't tell anyone the truth of the matter bc it sounded absolutely batshit nuts.

This is information I give freely bc I don't really think it's worth hiding, but I know in the actual telling of The Story, The Stardust Scouts, this would all be information that was slowly handed out during the actual plot where Olivia initially serves as a disguised, alien general of the grunt forces being sent out to Earth. Ze's like, a hammy villain of the week that likes fucking with the Scouts because it's funny and ze Doesn't Respect Them.

Olivia doesn't recognize Tabitha at first bc he's changed so much over the years, transed her gender, stopped caring about things like school and grades. Look at those dramatic fuckers... having feelings about rivalry and lost friendship and abandonment issues!! I should redraw the fake anime screenshot/do more of those sometime, those are always fun.

Also! This is an old design, but Olivia's main power when an antagonist is that ze can copy the powers of the other scouts and counter their attacks, meaning in the moments when the gang can fight zer one on one ze has the upper hand and can get away every time. I imagine then, that Olivia's main color scheme is very steely and grey when NOT using this copy cat ability, and ze doesn't have a sense of identiy beyond what ze can do for the aliens ze considers zer superiors.

Also! Also. Zer a jester/joker, since ze doesn't "fit" into the group's dynamic of being based on playing card suits.

EVENTUALLY, eventually, through a lot of monster of the week encounters, plot progression, and secrets revealed, Olivia's original identity would be uncovered and the team would convince zer to defect from zer alien captors, making zer a top level wanted deserter in the eyes of the big bad alien group (which I could talk abt another time).

Then Olivia gains a color of zer own, orange! Because the gang was always (in fiction) meant to be a team of 5, like the 5 points of a star! And colors of the rainbow/light spectrum, red orange green blue purple (yellow acts as a unifying accent color!).

To answer your question about the color meanings, I mostly assigned them originally based on vibes without too much through about specific symbolism. Plus I just like having characters all get one specific color, makes giving them outfits more enjoyable and fun for me. Like, you can see up above that Olivia (being Tak and all) originally had purple as zer main color. It took me a while to change that after I decided Savannah got purple instead, bc I was attached to how it looked. But orange felt like a good logical landing place. It's vibrant and fun and a little off the beaten path, again based on vibes.

Olivia starts off the story living among humans ""in disguise"" while plotting evil bad bitch things, and then after defecting ze just starts crashing at everyone's places while learning to really return to humanity in zer own way and hopefully make amends with the scouts for maybe sort of taking delight in fucking with them. Lol. Zer demeanor stays irreverent and annoying and punk throughout, even after zer turn to good/becoming the 5th ranger of the group, which makes zer a really fun character to think about and write.

where do i start

ehh, ill leave the best for last (a sneak peek of my other ocs)

1. starrs is not okay (were they really ever okay?)

when i first made them, they were alternian and had the same blood color as karkat. they were also supposed to be my trollsona. that uh. didnt work out. now i have a better trollsona, whos a gempio! and literally is me

eventually when i started worldbuilding for the universe starrs is from, i started changing things, such as what mutants actually are, which blood colors were extinct, e.t.c. anyways, back to beta starrs, originally they were 7-8 sweeps and so was kitten, kitten showed starrs off to her friends, but the relationship was actually kinda abusive. no that does not correlate to me irl i just like giving my characters trauma :3

i made this drawing when i first made the two and it shows starrs with a black eye cuz... you'll never guess this

ITS AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP

(help it looks so ugly and i never finished it 😭😭😭)

anyways, starrs was never okay and will never be after kitten broke up with them

(they will recover on the meteor but you wont see that yet. not on grumblr. grumblr's an au.)

2. KITTEN FUCKING SUCKS

yeah originally starrs n kitten were supposed to live together but since the living on real alternia idea got scrapped, kitten is still a jerk and a shitty ex-moirail at 6 :)

eventually starrs breaks up with kitten, and finding no one else to fill the gap in their heart, they resort to kraken in canon and avy in grumblr au :)

3. kraken is a shielded motherfucker

being a fuschia in-hiding, kraken has built up a shield of anger and defensiveness to anyone who isnt starrs, kitten, raymon (ooh who is that?! omg guys you just have to wait n see), raymons friends, and his bunkermates

Fire Emblem Awakening OC: Marlene

I really need to finish Bill's Cardverse story, but I’m so hyper focused on Marlene :;(∩´﹏`∩);: But I got the first design for Marlene all done! She has four total in both design and weapons to fit for each of her classes: Lancer, Knight, General and Bride. (When I saw that Bride class, I just couldn't help mysef >w<)

I wanted at least the official look for Marlene to be done before I move on to her other designs and official artworks. I have a lot planned for her, and I feel like I got a little too ahead of myself by starting a lot of drafts for her 🙃 but hey, I like to make things much more difficult for myself it's how I push myself to do more 😆
