Poll Runner's Lack of Anime Knowledge Really Needs to be Rectified: Metajecra VS Metagoon!

In the anime, Meta speaks more highly of him more than anyone else. It’s EXTREMELY clear Meta was very fond of Knuckle Joe’s father, in the sub MK says that he “swears on his love”. ALSO their masks both have the matching four spikes, there HAD to be something going on there.

HEAR ME OUT!!!! LISTEN!!! first off its a knight x assistant, SECOND they are both old ass men THIRD they are both the sassiest men in the show!!! I am aware they have directly interacted two times throughout the entire run of the show and have barely acknowledged each other but!!!! both mk and escargoon have known each other for a long time within the castle besides sword, blade and ddd. so they very likely both couldve been having super deep conversations for those however many decades. both of them take very similar approaches but different when it comes on their stance of king dedede. escargoon seems to only be around the king because of the status being directly under him gives him and the benefits to the job but escargoon does not like what ddd puts him thru. same thing can be said for mk who very obviously is only working under the king because of ddd for his association with nightmare and kirby who is set to land there any time. they both work for him for a means to an end rlly. I also think that mks frim nature could rlly help escargoon break out of his “two personalities” cycle. when escargoon is around ddd hes a bitch when hes not (sometimes) hes nice(?). though once he gains his status back under ddd or no longer makes use for the kids hes prtty bitchy again. mk could probably set him straight or atleast walk him in the right path with him not being his superior nor one of the “brats” he has to deal with. they seem on equal footing. also just a hc i like to think because both escargoon and mk are mechanics that after the anime escargoon helps mk rebuild the halberd. Metagoon: Water Communities across the Adriatic and Pacific, Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi

27th of March, 2024. Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi, Venice.

The Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi hosts an event curated by Metagoon, a multimedia platform collecting stories from the Venetian archipelago and inviting us to go beyond the geographical, environmental, social and cultural boundaries of the lagoon metropolis.

The event features some screenings followed by a discussion on the ecosystems of aquatic communities around the world with art historian Cristina Baldacci (Ca' Foscari University Venice and NICHE) and film researcher Maria Ida Bernabei (University of Turin), moderated by Alice Ongaro Sartori.

Projections scheduled include a documentary by Ubaldo Magnaghi, Vele chioggiotte, (1951), an artist’s film by Martha Atienza, Fisherfolks Day, (2022), and a montage created by Matteo Stocco and Matteo Primiterra with some footage realised in Venice between 2015 and 2024, entitled Metagoon24, which is accompanied by a musical performance by Macedoniasintetica with Carlo Camerin, Mattia Rigon and Simone Carraro. 

The event, with the discussion in English, is in collaboration with CSC-Cineteca Nazionale, D.H. office, Ocean Space, TBA21-Academy and THE NEW INSTITUTE Centre for Environmental Humanities (NICHE) and is part of the exhibition Metagoon: Chronicles of Future Geographies at the D.H. office in Salizada Malipiero 3208 on view until 1 April 2024.

It’s been two hours since Escargoon sat down at his desk with every intention of clocking some late night work on his next big project. The blueprints were spread open on the desk in front of him, along with one of his notebooks which was open to the most recent page of calculations and scribbled thoughts which he’d hatched over the past several nights. To most folks, these formulas and their corresponding hasty annotations might look a bit jumbled and abstract, and that was just as well. Couldn’t have these notes falling into the wrong hands. Not now, when what might be his greatest invention yet was so close at hand.

...That is, if he could muster the focus to work on it some more tonight.

No, instead he’d been sitting here letting his tea grow cold on the table beside him, his head in his hands, staring hard point blank at the page beneath his nose but otherwise being unable to focus. Science really is the last thing on his mind right now.

He’d been lingering long on how Meta Knight had touched his shell here recently... How he’d been acting with him. The purple eyes, the awkward attempts at reciprocating compliments, their somewhat regular lunch dates... how he never stepped away whenever Escargoon would test his physical boundaries. The things Escargoon had done with him lately, at least the two or so times he’d touched him, had been bold in a way that he’d thoroughly expected Meta Knight to find disagreeable— yet, the Knight had just stood there and let it happen. If anything, he seemed to be... confused by it, but not disinterested.

He lifted his head from his hands if only so he could rub at what would visually approximate the location of the bridge of his nose. He looked up at the corkboard in front of his desk. As chance would have it, right where he looked there was a picture of himself and Dedede standing out on the Castle walls with all of Dream Land sunny and brilliant behind them. Escargoon looked at this picture with a lot of sadness and... an underlying sense of profound yearning. It was a moment that should have been insignificant in the scheme of things, and... perhaps it was, at the time. But looking back... oh. He could remember how good he used to have it here. This was back when his employment was young. Back when life was good, when Dedede hadn’t yet shown his true nature. Back when he had let himself think that he had life by the horns.

In the picture, Dedede had one arm slung companionably around him, and the other held up in his customary peace sign. He was smiling, and so was Escargoon. Goon could remember distinctly even now, though this picture is over a hundred years old and it’s not clear by the angle of their pose, how he’d had occasion to put his arm around His Majesty right back for this picture. It had felt so good back then, to have the soft plush of his robe pressed against his side. To be allowed the privilege of pressing himself to Dedede as if they were together, even if it was just for that picture. That one moment of play-pretend.

He reached forward, plying the thumbtacks from the corners of the picture and held it in front of him so he could get a better look at it, and couldn’t help but ask himself with some degree of wonder, how he could’ve let himself be so naïve. 

He put the picture down on his desk again, square in the middle of the blueprint in fact, and leaned back in his chair a bit so he could cast his gaze to the ceiling. He sighed and willed those unhelpful thoughts out of his head.

Not for the first time lately do his thoughts turn to Meta Knight instead. This time, it’s the memory of their secret meeting in the hall which he’s turning over so carefully in his mind.

The deep blue of Meta Knight’s cape and his skin, how he seemed a drop of warm darkness in the golden hues of the sunset as it had filtered into the hallway... How Escargoon had called him his friend, and had reached for him emotionally, and the Knight had reached back physically. The profound gentleness in his touch when he set his hand on his shell...

Escargoon couldn’t help but linger on that too. Now that the war was through with him, through with everyone... he couldn’t help but wonder, was he always that gentle?

Something warm stirs in his chest at the thought, touching his heart like a caress. Would he be that gentle if they were to......?

...were to what?

Oh stars, was he really sitting here daydreaming about holding Meta Knight? He tries to sigh, but he can feel his throat closing up with emotion, making the air leave him almost in a gasp.

Yes, ok. So let’s say he were to hold him... Let’s think about that...

And... and what if... What if Meta Knight were to bring his hands up right back? What then? What if he took his mask off for him again, like he would do on their lunches? Only this time it’s so the cold metal of his mask doesn’t press coldly into his chest when he leaned forward into a hug. What would it feel like to have somebody hold him back the way he’d always held Dedede, only this time they’re doing it because they felt the same and not because they stood to gain something from faking it? What would it feel like to see the man beneath that carefully maintained outer persona look at him with soft wonder? To feel him lean into his touch, to hold him back like he needed him?

But... what were the chances of that? Meta Knight was likely just doing this because... well, Escargoon actually didn’t know. Maybe he felt sorry for him or something. Maybe he was tired of listening to him complain... What were the chances someone so wonderful could possibly find him interesting and worthwhile? It was probably just another Fool’s dream that Meta Knight might ever feel the same. Maybe... he had been reading too much into his behavior with him lately... He could never think like this about him, too... could he?

They were. HORRIBLE. for each other. The textbook definition of a problematic pairing. They got together for the wrong reasons, handled conflicts the worst ways possible, and both have such inflated egos that they NEVER learned anything good from what they were going through. Why did they stay together you may ask? Well, you see, their flammable relationship had… “benefits”, bonuses one may say. (I will not elaborate.) Also I use past tense because they are exes. They hate each other so much but also… they can’t live without the other. They just GOTTA be so loud about how much they despise the other. It has its beauty I suppose??

[Added by Poll Runner] It's a darker and edgier take on Metaranza! Definition of toxic boy yuri imo, the cattiness and sharp edges, it really adds a lot for a cooler take on an already cool couple! First impression: i was first introduced to meta knight in brawl and honestly i did not care about them JSDDJDJ i was like 6 or something at the time leave me alone. i didn’t even pronounce his name right.

Impression now: he’s so cool oh my god i can’t even begin to explain how much i love him. they are my heart and soul. he’s such a dork and a nerd. he’s been through such shit please,,, he does questionable things at times, but he always has good intentions. sometimes they just don’t know really how to execute it. like in squeak squad, he could’ve just told kirby instead of handling it himself or in magic mirror, he tried to handle it himself but we know how that went. anyway, overall they’re so cool i love hsjdjdjdjsjngngggnnghhg

Favorite moment: there’s no moment where it’s not good

Idea for a story: this one is a hard question tbh. im not very creative and im really bad at writing stories and everything. i just think that really any story could be good if you write the characters well. uhhh but maybe like a story of just like, his backstory would be cool to read

Unpopular opinion: i literally just came up with this one and i talked about it with youjsjdjd but i haven’t seen anyone talk about it so here i am. i think that meta knight would hold some kind of resentment/ cautiousness against his sword, galaxia. it quite literally killed garlude, one of his closest friends and he had to kill jecra with his own hand using the sword. you can imagine that they can’t help but remember those moments whenever he holds the sword.

Favorite relationship: if we’re talking romantic here, i really could go for anything kskdj. metadede, metagala, metaroach, metagoon etc, they’re all v nice..just not with kirby, because that’s disgusting. if we’re talking in a platonic sense, i also am pretty open skdndk. as long as it’s not really out of character, it’s really no big deal.

Favorite headcanon: hmmm this is also pretty difficult since there’s so many good ones, but one of my favorites is that he stands on his tippy toes when they’re wrapped around their cape. dude just wants to feel the slightest bit taller

Metagoon: Chronicles of Future Geographies (Editor & Program)

March 2nd – April 1st, 2024. D.H. office, Salizada Malipiero 3208, Venice.

A wooden table sits in the center of a room. The wood comes from a bricola in the Venetian lagoon, and the table is named Tysbe, in dedication to a departed friend (the scientist Davide Tagliapietra). On the table sits a small wooden library, sourced from the timber archive of the Neringa peninsula (Nida), Lithuania. This library is there for reading and exploration. Discussions revolve around Venetian tales, maps of the Adriatic Sea, lagoons, and new geographies. People gather around the table, sharing and listening to stories. There’s space for drawing. Brick walls display film photographs, windows into the lagoon discussed at the table or out in the calle on a beautiful day.Metagoon: Chronicles of Future Geographies is a laboratory that combines meetings, stories, and drawings to explore possible visions of the Venetian lagoon in the future. What might it become in 500 years? Following a creative writing workshop organized for La Parabola della Montagna at the Panorama space, the project takes another step forward. With a program of meetings focused on mapping, in the workshop and working space of D.H. office on Salizada Malipiero, Metagoon aims to promote diverse perspectives on the future of the lagoon, encouraging reflection and reinterpretation of its geography. From historical maps to those of science fiction inspiration, from bathymetry to urban projects never realized to utopian ones yet to be conceived. Imagining new geographies becomes a tool to visualize desires and risks, but also, and above all, to raise questions about the present. The creative effort in tracing future maps forces us to reflect on the complexity of geographies, their arbitrary nature, and the hierarchies that often remain hidden. 

Metagoon: Chronicles of Future Geographies is also a recording studio. The program’s meetings will be documented and uploaded to the Metagoon website, updating the platform with audio-video and textual contributions in the new blog section, which you are currently reading. Curious minds and ironic spirits are welcome, those eager to imagine a meta-lagoon, making an interpretive and imaginative effort to go beyond the geographic-environmental, cultural, and temporal boundaries that geographies often present to us.

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between Metagoon and D.H. office.

Fanfiction Idea

So in my previous post I talked about how disappointed I was in the Kirby anime fandom for not stepping up to the plate with a broader selection of MetaGoon content, and also for repeated mischaracterization on the part of Meta Knight (at least) in the small selection of fics that does exist. This fic, should I choose to write it, is an answer to that empty niche on Ao3, with realistic and respectful acknowledgements of Escargoon and Meta Knight’s respective traumas as well as (hopefully) better representation of their evolving relationship, unlike those that came before.

I’m definitely looking for feedback and opinions on this idea, so don’t hesitate to comment or send asks about it! I’m open to hearing your thoughts!

Meta Knight questions his own loyalty,  and Dedede pays the price for years of abuse.
