Navigating Mesothelioma: Causes, Symptoms, and Legal Considerations
Mesothelioma is a rare and formidable type of cancer primarily triggered by exposure to asbestos. If you or a cherished family member has encountered mesothelioma, it's vital to delve into the intricacies of the disease, its symptoms, and the legal aspects surrounding it. In this article, we'll delve deep into mesothelioma, offering valuable insights for those grappling with this challenging diagnosis.
Demystifying Mesothelioma
Unravel the enigma of mesothelioma, a rare cancer linked to asbestos exposure. Explore its types, causes, and crucial insights for those affected.
Understanding the Enigma
Mesothelioma, an elusive cancer, predominantly affects the protective mesothelium lining of our organs. Pleural mesothelioma, impacting the lung's lining, is the most common form. Other variants include peritoneal mesothelioma (abdominal lining), pericardial mesothelioma (heart lining), and testicular mesothelioma (testicular lining). It's imperative to recognize that asbestos exposure is inextricably linked to mesothelioma.
The Spectrum of Mesothelioma
- Pleural Mesothelioma
- Peritoneal Mesothelioma
- Pericardial Mesothelioma
- Testicular Mesothelioma
Unveiling the Culprit: Asbestos Exposure
The primary instigator of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. Once hailed for its fire-resistant properties, asbestos was widely used in construction and manufacturing. Inhalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers can lead to mesothelioma, a malignancy that can remain dormant for decades before manifesting.
Deciphering the Symptoms of Mesothelioma
Unlock the secrets of mesothelioma symptoms. Discover early warning signs, the diagnostic journey, and the path to improved treatment outcomes for those facing this complex cancer.
Early Warning Signs
The initial symptoms of mesothelioma are often vague and easily confused with less severe conditions. These may encompass:
- Breathlessness
- Chest Discomfort
- Persistent Cough
- Fatigue
- Unexplained Weight Loss
The Diagnostic Odyssey
Diagnosing mesothelioma involves a blend of imaging tests, biopsies, and a comprehensive review of medical history. Staging helps gauge the disease's extent and guides treatment choices. Swift diagnosis is pivotal for improved treatment outcomes.
Navigating the Path Forward
Prognosis in mesothelioma can vary, contingent upon the stage at diagnosis and overall health. Regrettably, mesothelioma is often detected at advanced stages, presenting formidable treatment challenges. Nonetheless, recent advancements in treatment modalities have enhanced survival rates.
The Legal Landscape: Pursuing Justice
Navigate the intricate legal landscape surrounding mesothelioma and asbestos exposure. Explore your rights, mesothelioma lawsuits, and avenues for seeking compensation to secure justice for those impacted by this disease.
Asbestos Exposure and Your Rights
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure, legal rights come into play. Manufacturers and employers who knowingly exposed individuals to asbestos without adequate protection can be held accountable for damages. Consulting an attorney well-versed in mesothelioma cases is pivotal for comprehending your legal recourse.
The Quest for Accountability: Mesothelioma Lawsuits
Mesothelioma lawsuits endeavor to hold liable parties responsible for asbestos exposure. These legal actions can result in financial compensation, encompassing medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional distress.
Seeking Compensation and Closure
Mesothelioma victims may be eligible for compensation from asbestos trust funds, settlements, or judgments obtained through lawsuits. This compensation can help defray medical costs, ongoing treatments, and secure the financial future.
Embracing Support and Resources
Embrace the essential support and resources available to those affected by mesothelioma. From specialized medical care to emotional well-being and advocacy groups, discover the vital networks aiding individuals and families on this challenging journey.
Medical Compassion and Expertise
Seeking medical care from a mesothelioma specialist is paramount. Treatment options may encompass surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and participation in clinical trials. Palliative care is instrumental in managing symptoms and enhancing quality of life.
Tending to Emotional Well-being
Coping with mesothelioma can be an emotionally taxing journey. Support groups, counseling services, and mental health resources exist to aid patients and their families in navigating the emotional burdens of the condition.
A Network of Advocates
Numerous advocacy groups and organizations are steadfast in their commitment to raising mesothelioma awareness, advancing research, and providing unwavering support. They serve as invaluable sources of information, assistance, and connections to experts in the field.
In Conclusion
Mesothelioma, stemming from asbestos exposure, is a formidable adversary. A comprehensive understanding of its origins, symptoms, legal implications, and available resources is indispensable for those grappling with this condition. In the face of mesothelioma, whether you're a patient or a concerned family member, remember that support, legal remedies, and a glimmer of hope for improved treatments and outcomes remain steadfast allies.

The tissue that lines your lungs, stomach, heart, and other organs is called mesothelium. Mesothelioma is a tumor of that tissue. It usually starts in the lungs, but can also start in the abdomen or other organs. It can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer.)
Malignant mesothelioma is a rare but serious type of cancer. Most people who get it have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles. After being exposed to asbestos, it usually takes a long time for the disease to form.
Symptoms include
Trouble breathing
Pain under the rib cage
Pain, swelling, or lumps in the abdomen
Weight loss for no known reason
Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Your doctor uses imaging tests and a biopsy to make the diagnosis. Malignant mesothelioma is often found when it is advanced. This makes it harder to treat. Treatment may include surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy.

Asbestos is carcinogenic mineral fibers found naturally in the earth, which were mined and widely used during the twentieth century. The results recorded dangerous levels of lead and asbestos present in 15 out of 19 district schools.
Asbestos becomes harmful when the material breaks apart, and the fibers or dust become airborne which causes breathing problems, lung disease, and cancer. Cases of mesothelioma cancer have been known not to develop for thirty or forty years, even after the initial exposure took place.

Baseball manager Charlie Metro battled mesothelioma
Charlie Metro, the legendary former manager of the Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, and Denver Bears, passed away recently (Friday, March 18, 2011). The cause of death was mesothelioma.
Born Charles Moreskonich on April 28, 1919 in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania, he took the name "Charlie Metro" from his father Metro Moreskonich, who immigrated to the United States from the Ukraine.
Metro began his career in the minor leagues at age 18. In a 2007 interview with Dave Brandon of Royals Corner, Metro told the story of his entry into the world of professional baseball:
Charlie Metro: ...I could run and I could catch a fly ball, so he signed me. Do you know the signing legend, the story?
Royals Corner: No, what’s that?
CM: Well, he gave me a contract for $60 per month. I took it home and showed it to my Dad, and he was absolutely elated because he loved baseball. I had five sisters and thome runsee brothers, and I watched my mother washing the clothes on a washboard. And gosh, she’s watching them for all of those kids, so I took the contract back unsigned. And Jack said, “Kid, you didn’t sign it, don’t you want to play?” I said “Yes, but I want $100 dollars.” He says, “What, what for?” And I said, “I want to buy my mother a washing machine.” He says, “Are you kidding me?” I say, “No sir, I don’t want to see her scrubbing on the board anymore.” He said, “How much?” And I said, “I want $100.” And he said to his business manager, “Go to the bank and get this guy $100.”
So they bring me a check, but after thinking it over a minute, I take it back to them and he says, “Kid, don’t you want to play ball?” And I said, “Yes.” He says, “Then sign the check,” and I said, “I want the money in cash, I’ve never seen a check.” So he sent the guy back and got me 100 one-dollar bills, and I took the cash home and got her a washing machine.
Like many people who develop mesothelioma, Charlie Metro worked in unsafe conditions--not during his days as an outfielder or team manager, but during his youth in Nanty Glo, a Western Pennsylvania mining town.
RC: ...Your father worked in the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania and is described as “extremely hard working” by those who knew him. Did you help out much in the coal mines and how did that shape you as a person? CM: I worked in the mines during the summers. I actually survived a gas explosion, and you know what they told the boss for me, don’t you? RC: No, what? CM: Take this job and shove it, and they wrote a song about it (Laughs). No, I survived a blast that killed seven men. And I said, “The heck with it” after that.
We salute Charlie Metro--outfielder, father, husband, team manager, mesothelioma fighter--for his fight against mesothelioma cancer. May the needless death of Charlie Metro, another prominent mesothelioma sufferer, raise awareness about the continuing menace mesothelioma poses years after asbestos exposure.

Actor, NFL star Merlin Olsen fought mesothelioma
Actor and NFL Hall of Famer Merlin Olsen died of mesothelioma on March 11, 2010--almost one year ago next week. Olsen was famous for, among other things, his role as Father Murphy (pictured above) on the show Father Murphy, his role as Jonathan Garvey on Little House on the Prairie, and his impressive career as a defensive tackle in the NFL, where he was part of the L.A. Rams' Fearsome Foursome (L-R: Lamar Lundy, Merlin Olsen, Rosey Grier, and Deacon Jones).
As part of a team, and a high-functioning unit within a team, the Foursome brought defense into the spotlight. Offense, in every sense, is easier to glamorize than defense, whether it is in narrating a play-by-play, analyzing military strategies, or outlining aggressive cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
But defense is just as important as offense, and vice versa. Olsen, known on the field for his teamwork, size, and talent as a defensive tackle, and known on Hollywood sets as a large, good-natured character actor, went on the offensive in his last years, suing the companies which had exposed him to asbestos years ago.
Olsen fought mesothelioma personally, in a physical battle against the effects of a poison dust he inhaled so long ago, but he also fought it legally, using his name, good reputation, and resources to bring attention to a disease that most often affects people who cannot afford to take on asbestos companies and related companies on their own.
We at Fight Mesothelioma! salute Merlin Olsen for his brave battle against mesothelioma, and his widow for continuing the battle. For all its complications and contradictions, fame has the incontestable power to draw public attention to celebrities' chosen causes. We mourn the loss of Olsen, and commend him for holding accountable the companies that produced the asbestos he inhaled, and we wish only peace and health for the Olsen family.

Okay, our main focus here at Fight Mesothelioma! is honoring those who have been affected by this disease, but sometimes you have to show some love to the people who are battling cancer in their own way, by raising awareness and money.
Earlier this year, Standing Cyclist Frank Cavaluzzi brought attention to mesothelioma by competing in The 2010 Pitt to DC Meso Challenge.
Just as important as raising awareness and conducting research is protecting the legal rights of mesothelioma victims, and making sure that the companies that profit from asbestos maintain safe work environments for all their employees.
Weitz & Luxenberg have defended the interests of mesothelioma victims, and all those who have been harmed by asbestos exposure, since 1986. Mesothelioma is a horrible disease, and it takes a combination of public awareness, medical research, and dedicated lawyers to fight this too-often fatal disease.
