Merlin: So that’s why it’s my destiny to protect Arthur.

Lancelot: I’m sure the basement dragon was very convincing, but that still doesn’t seem like a reason to stay where your very existence is a literal crime.

Merlin: Have you seen Arthur yet?

Lancelot: No?

Merlin: *gestures to the window overlooking the training field to see Arthur with his gold hair and blue eyes looking pretty*

Lancelot: Oh. Understandable. Out of curiosity, where can I get a destiny?

Imagine you're on your merry way to Camelot because you dream of being a knight and right outside the castle you find a twink picking mushrooms when a huge griffin comes charging at you. You fight it and get wounded. You wake up in the twink's bed and you tell him and his physician dad about your inspiring backstory and the twink just goes, sure I know the prince personally, I'll put in a good word for you. So you ask, just to be sure, "You know Prince Arthur?" and the twink grins and says "Oh yes!" Naturally you operate under the assumption that he and the prince are an item, but then he introduces you to his lady friend and she is the most beautiful woman you've ever seen. You have doubts now so you ask the twink if he's dating the lady friend and the way he reassures you that he isn't solidifies your suspicion that he's the prince's lad. He also hands you this unbelievably detailed forgery of a seal of nobility that you dare not even ask how he got. Now that you basically have a fake ID you go and train to be a knight of Camelot. The prince likes you, you become a knight, you masterfully dodge any questions as to how your father suddenly has 5 grown sons instead of 4, you're a respected citizen of Camelot, and you still sleep in the twink's bed. In the morning, Camelot guards barge in your shared bedroom and arrest you for identity theft. You spend a day and night in the cells, from where you suddenly hear the griffin's bloodfreezing screams. The prince frees you the next day, disobeying his father's orders because he likes you that much and you wonder if you're expected to join his and the twink's relationship or perhaps you'll be free to pursue a courtship with the beautiful lady. But first things first, there's a griffin on the loose. The twink wants to come with you to fight which you naturally want to forbid because he's a little thing and the prince will surely kill you if his boyfriend gets harmed but he's such a strangely capable weirdo that you have neither the heart nor the time to deny him any longer. So you both go and join the fight against the griffin. Somehow you and the twink are the last ones standing as even the prince is knocked out. You make one last, determined charge at the griffin and as you do you hear the twink shout literal words of magic behind you. Suddenly your spear sparkles with enchantment as you successfully slay the griffin - you turn your horse around to face the twink; his face is full of relief and unrestrained happiness while you're still grappling with the situation. The prince's servant is a sorcerer. Said prince is coming to consciousness so the twink runs away to hide his illegal magic and the prince thinks you slayed the beast all on your own. You are brought to the throne room once again but it turns out lying about your status of nobility is a greater crime than slaying a griffin is a merit so you wait outside to learn your fate. You tell the twink that you've seen him do magic and that you'll keep it secret. Unknowingly to you the prince and the king are arguing about maybe perhaps restoring your knighthood but you interrupt their conversation to say goodbye (regardless if you're still their prisoner or not). From the expression on the prince's face you are now sure that he did in fact want you to join his secret romance with the twink. You leave. It's all you've ever been good at.

Lancelot had gone to Arthur's chambers and was embarrassed but not all that surprised to find Merlin there. He was the prince's servant after all. Stumbling, Lancelot tried to apologize and come up with some kind of excuse, when Merlin spoke up.

"It's alright, Lancelot, I'll be finished here soon."

Lancelot smiled. "That's great news. I'd like to... stay one more night, if that's alright."

"I'd love to have you."

This whole time, Arthur stood to the side, lips pressed tightly into a line. "You could stay here if you'd like."

"Oh no, I wouldn't want to impose," Lancelot said.

"It's no imposition."

"I don't know what to say. You've already been so kind to me."

"Don't say anything. Just... stay."

As Lancelot was trying to decide if he should accept Arthur's offer of the very thing he'd come here for, Merlin interrupted.

"I'll just be going," he said in a small voice, attempting to duck behind Lancelot.

"You can stay here too, Merlin," Arthur said in a voice tinted by exasperation.

Merlin paused, then closed the door. "Really?"

"Yes. Now come here before I change my mind."

Merlin stepped sheepishly closer.

"You too, Lancelot."

With a glance at Merlin, Lancelot took a step closer, then Merlin was holding his hand, and he was enveloped in the embrace of the prince and his manservant.
