Merlin in the modern day Moodboards part 4;

Character: Drea.

Modern name: Andrea "Drea" Ryder.

Age: 25 years old.

Modern job: TV Ghost Hunter and Youth Center worker.

Short rundown of their modern life: Andrea "Drea" Ryder was born in a small town and spent the first 14 years of her life living with her parents and younger sister until the 3 of them were murdered by a spirit.

No one believed her about what happened and she was sent off to foster care.

She lasted 3 months of being booted from foster home to foster home-- being told that ghosts weren't real, that she was making it up, and that she was seeing things-- until she snapped and ran away.

She spent the next 6 months on the streets until she was found by a Canadian couple who were running the local youth center-- Tristan and Isolde Hannington (both 29 years old)-- who took her in. Treating her like a sister. She still lives with them.

Now she works at the youth center and as a TV Ghost Hunter with her boyfriend, Eoghan (who is also a map maker).

Character: Eoghan.

Modern name: Eoghan Bourne.

Age: 23 years old.

Modern job: Former child spy and thief turned Cartographer, TV Ghost Hunter, and Youth Center worker.

Short rundown of their modern life: Eoghan Bourne was the son of a warrior who made him and his older sister (Sefa) into spies and thieves for him.

Eventually, when he was about 7, he got separated from both his sister and father-- causing him to end up in foster care.

He bounced around for a few years until he finally managed to track his older sister down, who along with her husband took him in. Raising him and her brother-in-law alongside her husband.

Character: A mixture of Arthur the less from the legends and Artie Pendragon (Descendants character).

Modern name: Artie Smith.

Age: 11 years old.

Modern job: None. He's a student.

Short rundown of their modern life: Little Artie was left on the doorstep of 'Camelot Beauties' where he was found by the owner, Gwen Smith, who took him in.

She went on to raise him with the help of Morgana, Elyan, and Mordred. And later on, the others.

He ended up befriending Salem, Dragonet, Everard, and Marcel along the way.

Character: Sir Le Bel Inconnu from the legends.

Modern name: Gingalain "Everard" Jones.

Age: 11 years old.

Modern job: None. He's a student.

Short rundown of their modern life: Gingalain "Everard" Jones was the product of a one night stand between Vagabond boxer, Gwaine Jones, and an unknown woman he met at a music festival.

9 months later, Gwaine got a call from a hospital where the music festival took place saying his name was on the birth certificate of an abandoned baby that would be placed into foster care if he didn't go pick them up. So he hightailed it all the way back to the state and tracked down the hospital and picked him up.

Gingalain eventually gained a little sister in Constance 6 years later and a kind of step brother in Percival's son, Lohengrin "Grin" Armstrong 11 years later.

He also became friends with Salem, Dragonet, Everard, and Marcel over the years.

Character: None. This is an original character of mine.

Modern name: Constance Jones.

Age: 5 years old.

Modern job: None. She's a student.

Short rundown of their modern life: Constance Jones was a result of yet another one night stand between Vagabond boxer, Gwaine Jones, and an unknown woman that he met in a bar.

Which led to another awkward phone call that led to him having to break several traffic laws to get to another state to pick yet another one of his kids up.

She eventually gained a kind of step brother in Percival's son, Lohengrin "Grin" Armstrong 5 years later.

She also became good friends with Elyan's youngest adoptive son, Clover Smith.

Character: Sir Lohengrin from the legends.

Modern name: Lohengrin "Grin" Armstrong.

Age: 9 months old.

Modern job: None. He's a baby.

Short rundown of their modern life: Lohengrin "Grin" Armstrong was adopted by Percival and is the youngest of the group's kids.

Character: Druid Boy.

Modern name: Marcel Knightley.

Age: 11 years old.

Modern job: None. He's a student.

Short rundown of their modern life: Marcel Knightley grew up on the streets until he was 10 when he broke into Will and Elena's house-- thinking no one was home-- looking for food and was found by them.

They took him in and have been taking care of him ever since. Fighting against anyone who called him a 'problem child' because of his night terrors odd stories, and odd hobbies.

They also eventually got him to slowly feel comfortable around the knights and Morgana and later Arthur , who he was even more frightened of than the others for some reason none of them could explain (except for Merlin and Leon who both cringe at the memory from their past that they'd prefer stay forgotten).

Character: Ghost Boy.

Modern name: Clover Smith.

Age: 5 years old.

Modern job: None. He's a student.

Short rundown of their modern life: Clover Smith is an amnesia afflicted boy who Elyan found during a flood when he was 3 and took in.

Clover only has flickers of memories from his past but none that really make sense in this time period.

He quickly became Constance's bestfriend not long after he was adopted.

Character: Dragonet the Jester.

Modern name: Dragonet Everstone.

Age: 11 years old.

Modern job: None. He's a student.

Short rundown of their modern life: Dragonet was born to Merlin and Freya 11 years ago, and grew up having to keep his magic a secret from most-- outside of Leon and his parents, of course.

He eventually ended up befriending Artie, Everard, Marcel, and Salem, and now does his best to keep them out of harm while trying to keep his magic a secret. Just till his parents and Leon say it's okay for him to tell them.

Which is likely to be sometime after they awaken everyone.

It's a good thing he's somewhat patient.

Deep Blue Kingdom Session 4: Cold As Ice

With their course set, the protagonists flee towards the northern borders of the Danu Kingdom. Along the way Einar and Olwen have a chat, The ship gets more staff, and Eoghan tries his hand at psychotronics. And finally, in the frozen wonderland of the far north, a battle begins.

I don't have great logs for some of these side sessions. Olwen and Eoghan talk some stuff out in the ship's gym, which is hot and uncomfortable in the grand tradition of submarines gyms. I think the purpose was for Olwen to scope out how well she could trust her new mercenary companion? Either way it didn't end in them fighting, so probably a good sign.

The other short side session that happened is Eoghan getting flagged down by Reiho for some help. She's decided to organize the civilians on the ship to assist the understaffed crew. While she and Eoghan go over schedules and lists of skills and such, they get to chatting. Eoghan's kind of pissed the Princess isn't in the lists, and appears to be just dead (royal) weight. Reiho explains that she's trying to be considerate because Fionnoula's been depressed, what with the losing her country and some of her family being hurt and all. No real agreement is reached on how to deal with that; Eoghan is playing up his Intolerance (nobility) to the max and Reiho is not going along with it.

Eventually they finish the work and table their discussion for another day. Reiho gets to ask him some about his Gadgeteering project, and they split.

When the team approaches the northern border, there's a short briefing before everything gets underway. Vayr is back out of hiding in their computer-cave, and leads the first part. Comms traffic indicates the various mobile firebases up ahead are patrolling, as well as the existence of a pursuit force dogging their tail. Eventually it's decided to try for a full-speed breakthrough, with the protagonists deploying their mecha on the outside of the ship's pressure hull. They head north with a moutain range to their right, so they won't have to worry about attack from that direction. Reiho is handling the comms, under the callsign ‘Masthead’; the PCs are each assigned their own monikers after a short discussion. (Merlin, Joker, Hunter, and Lynx for Alastar, Eoghan, Einar, and Olwen, respectively). The ship’s now staffed enough to be a viable combatant.

Not too much later and at considerable range, they notice a weird haze of white close to the ground. Alastar spots it first, and decides to take a rather cautious approach, doing his best to scan it passively but the haze of kicked up snow is just not cooperating with him. Eventually he reasons that a flying submarine is about as conspicuous as you can get and uses his mecha's laser sensors to try to scan the thing, right as the haze stops moving and starts to thin out.

Within that haze is their main obstacle, one of the mobile firebases mentioned last time around. Its movement had kicked up the ice and snow around it, reducing visibility & sensor range - and without any scouts outside to report back, the Sima Yi was able to get much too close for comfort. Promotions are not in the enemy commander's future.

As the haze cut both ways and both sides have effectively surprised each other, combat quickly becomes a mess. The first exchange of ship-bound weapons blows apart one of the firebase's turrets and makes the Sima Yi start crashing. PCs either jump off or brace for impact, while the enemy starts deploying their tanks.  They're able to get two out before Eoghan blows up the departure ramp, leaving their further tanks stranded inside the base.

The ship-to-ship side of combat stalls almost immediately. The firebase is unwilling to bring its three remaining turrets to bear on the grounded Sima Yi for fear of hurting the princess. The Sima Yi keeps bombarding the firebase, but that anti-ballistic missile laser is more than capable of point-defencing the incoming shells to oblivion.

On the mecha side, things are going pretty well for the PCs. The first tank suffers heavy damage fast, with direct hits on its crew compartment killing most of the crew and an 'eyes' (-9) hit from Alastar effectively crippling it. The second tank is doing better, and opens fire on Eoghan (he dodges) while Olwen rushes towards it and the base.

That's about where the session wrapped up; Alastar was able to get a bucket of 11 (!!) tactics points for the team. Depending on when the pursuit force shows up/how fast Eoghan can fix the engine, there may be a lot of need for them.

GM THOUGHTS

I expected the tanks to fare a lot better against laser sniper rifles at range than they did. Maybe I need to up their armor?

Having Reiho not be a huge jerk about Fionnoula is important characterization for her, but might have put some pressure on Eoghan's player to take the contrary view. Perhaps I'll have him deal with some people who are such big jerks even he can't handle it.

Should either avoid vast flat, featureless plains in the future or reduce their vastness by letting faster movement modes have more effect.

Need to check for disadvantages before sessions more, until I can remember what the PCs have easily.

This time around I wrote the occupant hit threshold for each vehicle in their statblock. It helped so much.

I always hate how horrible Lamia's character was treated. Mostly considering that this is another person in the series being used. In the show (were gonna ignore all greek origins of Llamia for now as they don't follow any of it in the show really) Gaius says " The high priestess of the old religions took the blood from a girl and mingled it with that of a serpant." So the high priestesses got these Girls and forcefully mixed their blood with a serpant (not their best moment). Then we hear Gwen and Merlin talk about her with the line "She's just a girl." And they make it very clear in this episode that she is just a girl. Now with this show they use the term girl and boy (or even the term Young in front of their names) for younger characters. (Kara, Sefa, Mordred, Daegal, Eoghan, Gilli, as well as for Merlin and Gwen in the earlier seasons)

This always bothered me because it's like did they just snatch up this girl away from her family and use her. Like what's with this show and manipulating these younger characters who aren't even adults, making them have a "Bad roll" and then killing them all off or we never see them again?

Whala! Another sneak peak but this one is from the main (merlin Au) story that helps connect everything together. I have been working on this for many months, trying to get the plot right and all the events, as a lot happens. But here is officially the first sneak peak/announcement of it.

This bit is actually at the very end but there is no spoilers for the whole thing... Kinda...sorta? I mean tags always kinda give spoilers already so.... But also yes I know the cut is weird but any farther and their would be actual spoilers.

"Where did all these kids come from anyways?" 

Arthur gestured to the field where said group of teens were running about. Blossomed flowers  and blades of grass under their feet as they chased after one another.

"You were harboring half in the castle right under my nose, didn't know you were stashing them around other places too." 

"Harboring?" Merlin mumbled under his breath in an offended tone. Arthur chuckled at his offense of his obvious foibles and inclination that was present with eight teens.

Merlin sighed, "Will says I have a problem." His tone almost reluctantly as he crossed his arms over his chest.

Arthur scoffed, "You say it like it's an addiction." 

"It was an accident." Merlin defended.

"You accidentally ended up with eight kids in your hands?"

Merlin simply shrugged his shoulders in response as if he didn't know how each one ended up in his care. Even if not under his supervision in the castle but rather with people he trusted would keep them safe. Though their individual safety and how much they all meant to him was all the same.

"When you put it like that…'' he mumbled.

"It sounds pretty bad, Merlin."

"No it-," Merlin fumbled with his words then huffed, "just a little bit."

Their eyes locked before they both chuckled. Arthur for the ridiculous situation his servant had gotten himself into yet again. And Merlin, who knew the thought that Arthur was just as bad. An attachment already formed, that if one of them were to be injured or hurt, Arthur would be there, beside Merlin, to help. 

A bout of laughter drew their attention back to the field. Watching as Mordred ran up and caught Daegal. He wrapped his arms around Daegal's midsection as he lifted his feet from the ground and spun him around. Daegal, too busy laughing to try to bother escaping. 

Merlin smiled, "You and Morgana are to blame for Mordred though." He reached over and stole a couple of grapes from Arthur's plate.

Arthur quickly shot him a pointed look. Ignoring Merlin's thieving hands as the sight was nowhere out of the normal. But rather for the comment he made. Arthur now knew exactly the story of how everything went down many years before.

Merlin caught Arthur's look on him before he looked away. He looked back to say something but nothing came out. He rolled his eyes. "Okay, maybe I'm to blame for that one too." 

The king smiled at Merlin's unusual habit or so to speak, while he shook his head. 

"I can't help it!" Merlin exclaimed.

"You have a kind heart, Merlin." Something if never said out loud, could be said by glances and unneeded words; that Arthur hoped never changed.

"Merlin!" 

"Arthur!"

They both looked up to find Daegal and Mordred waving them over. 

Merlin in turn held up his hand, telling both to wait a second, but that they would come. Everyone else with them, doing the same. Calling or running off to drag the others into their game. 

"They all admire you," Arthur said, "admire each other in a way too." 

Merlin smirked, "This is our family." He pushed himself up to his feet 

"No one has any family left so… I guess we made our own." 

They both looked over as Morgana and Gwen got dragged up and over to the rest by Kara and Drea.

"Everyone here." Merlin continued. He looked down and gave Arthur a content smile before back to what was going on.

He looked over to see Gilli and Lamia doing their part as Will and Freya were dragged from their laid back relaxed positions on the grass. Merlin wished Lancelot was there with them as well. Instead too busy inside with George, keeping the rest of the knights from following them and curious what the group was doing out in the fields.

But he knew one day, like Arthur, Gwen and Lancelot they would soon find out. Hopefully joining them out among the flowers and open space where they could run and not be running from the said knights.

"I think Tristan and Isolde are beginning to grow fond as well." He said and looked over to see Eoghan and Sefa pulling the couple over as well. Sefa's hair having just been braided back by Isolde, now was bound to become a mess again with all the running about.

Leaving only him and Arthur left to make their way over to the others.

Also this has not been proofread or read through at all, please excuse grammer and horrible pacing.
