Merle patterning and its associated health issues
alright, let's start with a quick definition
“also know as dapple, merle is characterized by irregular blotches of fur set on a lighter background of the same pigment, such as solid black on gray (called blue merle) or solid brown on tan (red merle).” -American Kennel Club
Merle is a dominant color gene meaning it (almost) always presents itself phenotypically when apart of the dogs genotype even when it is a heterozygous gene. merle is a very popular and desirable color and because of this is often sold by breeders for a higher price, though an ethical breeder shouldn't be charging more for a certain color.
if a merle (Mm) and a non merle (mm) are bred together there is a 50% chance each pup will be merle. if you breed two merle's (Mm) together that chance raises to 75% but, you run the risk of producing a double merle (MM) which have a heightened chance of health issues
The most common health risk with merle dogs is deafness, even single merles (Mm) have an increased likelihood of these issues. Double merles (MM) are at a even higher risk for deafness, one study finding 85% of MM dogs were bilaterally deaf.
On top of the deafness MM dogs often have very small and often non-functional eyes (microphthalmia).
double merle's can occur for a few different reasons
1. in feral/stray populations dogs will be breeding and obviously they don't understand that how genetics works so two merle's can mate producing a double merle. though it's unlikely and deaf and blind dog will survive long without human intervention
2. similar to option one is ignorance on the owners part! it may be an uneducated breeder or an oops-litter but an owner who doesn't understand or know about the dangers of double merle's make accidentally create one.
3. greed! though many double merle's are born infertile if you were to get a double merle bitch (MM) who is able to produce pups and bred her to a regular sire (mm) you would have a litter of all single merle puppies (Mm) which as previously mentioned can be sold for more.
over all, merle dogs are very pretty but you should be aware of the risks this coloring can have especially in double merle's.
thank you for coming to my autism rant, have a good day

Crewel - Cats & Dogs
Prompt: Fallen (TwstOber) & @flashfictionfridayofficial They're only mentioned in this, but Asher, Merle, and Porfirio are OCs of mine. They're first-years who are in Diasomnia dorm.
Crewel knew he should have taken a sick day. Instead of remaining secure in the staff quarters, he instead braved the halls filled with immature mages. He removed all the unstable ingredients from the shelves in the alchemy lab and locked away every potion in the potions classroom.
And still—like every year—he stared out at the absolute chaos destroying his classroom.
A large white dog loudly barked at a purple cat loudly cackling next to an upturned cauldron. A small, lavender Pomeranian ran circles around the large white dog, adding his high-pitched barks to the ruckus. A black cat leaped from one table to another, hissing a the red-orange retriever chased after it. A blue nosed pitbull carefully nosed an orange cat shaking under a desk, and the howls of surprise the feline emitted would make anyone believe it was being skinned alive. A very insistent Doberman circled the classroom, barking at every cat and dog who didn’t move fast enough for him.
Grim, his only student not affected by the overpowered potion, yowled from the other end of the classroom. “Stop sniffing my tail! Just because you’re a dog now doesn’t you need to sniff every little thing. Yuu! Help!”
A little black terrier broke free of the barking dogs and hissing cats. She trotted right up to Crewel and sat next to his foot. She looked up at him with big black eyes. Crewel scoffed. “Don’t act all innocent. There’s a reason I assigned book work today. Some of the most powerful potions can only be brewed on nights of a full moon. The supermoon passing now all but guaranteed this result.”
Yuu primly barked at him before trotting off to stop Epel the Pomeranian from eating the ears off Porfirio the Cackling Purple Cat. White Dog Jack stood on his hind legs to grab the cauldron Porfirio guarded. He was thrown off balance when Ace the Red Retriever ran into him while chasing Merle the Black Cat. The cauldron fell to the floor with a mighty crash, causing Asher the Jumpy Orange Cat to reflexively latch onto Deuce the Blue Nosed Pitbull. The pained yowl from Deuce caused Sebek the Obnoxious Doberman to immediately bark what Crewel imagined was insults.
Yuu the Terrier trotted around the classroom before plopping next to him again. Crewel sighed and knelt to pat the top of her head. “Even with the potion strengthened by the supermoon, it should wear off in a few minutes. After that, all of you pups will scrub the cauldrons until I deem them spotless.” Yuu yipped. Crewel lightly pulled at her ear and stood. “Don’t pretend you don’t understand me. You knew exactly which lever to pull to activate the emergency shower to wash off the potion.”
Yuu yipped again and trotted off to make another round of the classroom. Crewel shook his head and retreated to his desk. There was nothing he could do, so he may as well catch up on paperwork. The only thing that could possibly make the situation worse was—
“Pop quiz!”
Crewel dropped his head into his hands and groaned. He ignored Crowley’s surprised exclamations and the chorus of barks and yowls that answered him. Next year, he planned to take off the entire week.

Pawsona 3 and 4
Recently had an idea for my Persona anthro AUs where what would happen if I drew the P3 and P4 cast as anthro dogs like the P5 cast (since P5R was my first Persona game and wanted to draw anthro dogified designs for the P5 cast)
Then here would be my picks:
Persona 3 Makoto Y - australian shepherd (blue merle) Kotone - australian shepherd (red merle) Yukari - domesticated red fox Junpei - doberman Mitsuru - alaskan malamute (red furred) Akihiko - siberian husky (oh the irony that he's a husky weak to ice) Fuuka - weimaraner Aigis - golden retriever Koromaru - anthropomorphized like the rest of SEES with his character and story altered slighty Ken - pembroke welsh corgi Shinjiro - leonberger
Persona 4 Yu - wolfdog (she'd still be transfem regardless lmao) Yosuke - jack russell terrier Chie - rottweiler/japanese akita inu mix Yukiko - dalmatian Kanji - pitbull Rise - papillon Teddie (after doing sit ups) - pomeranian Naoto - border collie
(I might draw these ideas someday, but no promises)
Gonna be honest, I actually did want to draw the P3 and P4 casts as anthro dogs but I kinda decided against it due to my original idea of making the Phantom Thieves the opposite species of Morgana. So I just decided to make the P3 and P4 casts the opposite of their "animal" character (Koromaru and Teddie*).
*musteloids are sometimes referred to as bears in some of their other names or in other languages (like raccoons being called wash bears or wolverines being called skunk bears) but they're not exactly related to bears

Details/design notes beneath the cut :3 (and a bonus 2nd fursona)
I'm cheating the system a bit since i have two, HAHA, but this is Socks! He's been many things over the years but is now a rat (specifically R. norvegicus) ... He is also kind of not an animal but an abomination against god, and is the remains of a bunch of once normal rats that got tangled together and slowly congealed into one mass.... hence the multiple tails, but hey! Don't worry too hard about that part. His entire design is also a tribute to my beloved pet rats who have now passed on. With his fur pattern/coloration specifically being in reference to my beloved favorite son, Haku
Socks's other tails are all in reference/designed after my other pet rats! Who I won't spam pictures of here, but I miss them all very dearly.
Have some emotes for more art of him
The other, special bonus fursona!!
He's a blue merle pomeranian! And was just something I made to say I had a puppy fursona and to match a fursona design my partner wanted to have. I still love him a lot and he reincorporates some design concepts from an older (more kitty cat) design of Socks from pre-transition in a new form!! Specifically, the big thick neck-floof, the heart pattern on it, and the thigh-high markings (though i didn't do it on both legs this time as it looked weird to me, ehe,,,)
Here's Winter with his pibble boyfriend Chance!! This was done by @deadeery and is such great work. It brings me such joy whenever i see it. LOOK AT THEM.
reblog this post with your fursona. doesnt even have to be art it can be a description. show me ur fursonas okay

🐾 Discovering Unexpected Family Ties: The Science Behind Our Dogs' Connections 🧬✨
At Infinite Hearts Sanctuary, our focus has always been on giving animals a second chance, but thanks to Embark DNA testing, we’ve uncovered something extraordinary: our dogs—Penny, Pepe, Jolene, Lucky, and Romeo—are genetically connected! While they may not always get along perfectly yet but, their DNA tells an incredible story of shared ancestry and surprising family ties.
Pepe & Penny: A Shared Pomeranian Heritage 🐶❤️🐕
Shared DNA: 4% Relation: Extended Family (First to Second Cousins)
Pepe, our blue Merle Pomsky, and Penny, our bold Pom-Chi-Poo-Supermutt, share 4% of their DNA, making them extended family. This connection means they likely share a grandparent or great-grandparent in their Pomeranian lineage.
Scientific Insight:
A 4% DNA match is uncommon, especially in mixed-breed dogs from different origins. This percentage typically occurs when dogs share ancestry in a popular breed—in this case, Pomeranians.
Jolene & Lucky: Extended Family Through Shared Ancestors 🐕✨
Shared DNA: 3% Relation: Extended Family (First to Second Cousins)
Jolene, our striking blue Merle Great Dane, and Lucky, our loyal Pitbull-Bully-Staffordshire Terrier mix, share 3% of their DNA, classifying them as extended family. This percentage suggests they have a shared ancestor a few generations back, likely from a working dog breed.
Scientific Insight:
Great Danes and Pitbull mixes have vastly different breed histories, but their shared DNA highlights the interconnected nature of canine genetics, especially in larger working breeds.
Jolene & Penny: Distant Relatives 🐾✨
Shared DNA: 1% Relation: Distant Family (Second to Third Cousins)
Jolene also shares 1% of her DNA with Penny, which places them as distant relatives. This level of connection indicates a shared ancestor several generations back, despite their vastly different sizes and breed characteristics.
Jolene & Romeo: A Surprising Genetic Link 🐾🐾
Shared DNA: 1% Relation: Distant Family (Second to Third Cousins)
Jolene and Romeo share 1% of their DNA, classifying them as distant relatives. While their breed backgrounds—Great Dane and Pitbull—don’t overlap directly, this connection suggests that their ancestry includes a shared lineage further back in history.
Lucky & Romeo: Close Family Ties 🧬🐾
Shared DNA: 11% Relation: Close Family (Half-Siblings or First Cousins)
Lucky and Romeo share an impressive 11% of their DNA, making them the closest match in our pack. This level of sharing is equivalent to half-siblings, first cousins, or a shared grandparent.
Scientific Insight:
An 11% DNA match is highly significant and almost always indicates a close familial relationship. This finding suggests that Lucky and Romeo likely share a direct ancestor within one or two generations.
The Probability of Shared DNA 📊
Here’s what makes these connections so remarkable:
4% Shared DNA (Pepe & Penny):
In mixed-breed dogs, this level of shared DNA is rare, occurring in less than 1 in 10,000 pairs, particularly when breeds like Pomsky and Pom-Chi-Poo are involved.
3% Shared DNA (Jolene & Lucky):
A 3% match is uncommon across dogs with such different breed histories, suggesting an intersection of working breed lineages.
1% Shared DNA (Jolene & Penny/Romeo):
This level of shared DNA is slightly more common but still notable, as it points to a shared ancestor several generations back.
11% Shared DNA (Lucky & Romeo):
This match is highly significant, almost always indicating a close familial tie such as siblings, a parent-offspring relationship, or first cousins.
The Science of Canine Genetics 🧬
The shared DNA between our dogs reflects the complexity of canine ancestry:
Breed Overlaps:
Pomeranians, common in both Pepe and Penny’s ancestry, contribute to their genetic connection.
Pitbulls and Staffordshire Terriers, present in Lucky and Romeo, share overlapping breed histories, explaining their closer genetic match.
Shared Ancestors Across Breeds:
Historically, many modern dog breeds trace back to a small number of founding populations. This shared ancestry can create genetic overlaps even in seemingly unrelated breeds.
Genetic Markers:
Specific markers in Jolene’s DNA (as a Great Dane) likely intersect with traits found in Pitbulls and Pomeranians, pointing to shared ancestors from working or companion breeds.
The Beauty of Unexpected Connections
In the world of rescues, dogs often come from diverse backgrounds with no apparent connection. The fact that our pack has such significant genetic ties is a testament to the randomness and beauty of life. Science has uncovered these bonds, but fate brought these dogs together, creating a family that’s as unique as it is extraordinary.
