Daryl Dixon Rewatch S1E02 - Alouette
what i loved the most about this ep was getting to know these kids, their way of living and surviving, and how that allowed us to take a look at Daryl's own stolen childhood. but first things first, Daryl's one track mind - his goal is to return home, in spite of everyone he has any kind of conversation with telling him home/family is who you're with now.
also sassy!Daryl is back full force, and that's one of the things i love the most about this show. some more thoughts after the jump...
it's ironic and hilarious, how Daryl was deemed the one, the messenger, to protect the new Messiah by Isabelle, and the dude keeps getting tricked, trapped, bested by old dudes and children and saved by a nun and some random kids. one thing is what the characters say and believe, and the other is what we are watching on screen. Daryl's not a hero, and the show is making that clear, IMO. not with words, but with action.
Father Daryl, plsss. the moment he is saying grace surrounded by a bunch of children is one of the most genuine Daryl moments in years. there's some kind of innocence and honesty we rarely see that gives us another look into who he is. slurping some good soup without a care in the world for one brief moment in time.
and then there's Mork and Mindy, and how Daryl smiles watching it with them kids, his own childhood feeling so close and far away, bringing up old memories, the only happy memories of his brother Merle while they were kids. it's beautiful.
the share a bed scene with Izzy no one asked for, but that is meant to show they getting to know each other, and i get it, the show is doing it to keep us wondering if something is gonna transpire, keep us interested and invested.
when Daryl says the kids can't miss something they never had (aka normal childhood), he is talking about his own childhood, and perhaps soooo much more he wished he got to live and experience. i will not mention Carol cause that seems wildly inappropriate, but there i mentioned her. she's his only link to who he was and who he is now. despite them never openly talking about their history, Carol knows Merle, knows where he comes from, the type of life he had, and they are connected through that pain of what life should have been like if they hadn't been hurt by people who were supposed to love them and protect them in the past. anywaysss, i just got way too deep.
Daryl's desperation to get to that radio and take him one step closer to getting home makes him do something he normally wouldn't: LIE!!
RJ, the asshole, is telling him all that matters is getting back home to his wife and kids, and Daryl be like "dude, same," but he gets uncharacteristically cruel when he tells him that there's no home to get back to, that everybody is gone, and i can't help but think that's Daryl's own fears talking.
"i'm better off on my own," he said. he was def not since the kids had to pull him out of that walker pit after he blew shit up, like he does. the funny part was when he gets up like an old man with bad knees. there goes that hero!Daryl image out the window once again. he's feeling his age lol
then Daryl does the most Daryl thing he's done since he got to France. he put down that walker!kid for Lou. that's who Daryl is. he cares about people, he will take the weight off of them and offer some comfort. he's not a hero, but he is a good guy with a good heart. he is a man of honor. Carol was right! and he apologizes for lying to Lou.
Laurent should have stayed with those kids at the preschool. he obviously didn't wanna leave, he made friends, and they could teach him everything he needs to know how to survive and live and be happy. but he is "special," or so his aunt says. imma say it again, if Laurent is to have a happy ending, this is exactly where he should end up at. s2 i'll be seated and waiting for you to deliver Carol and Daryl saving this kid together, and letting him live happily ever after with this group.
that final bonding moment between Daryl and Laurent is very moving. Daryl keeps telling him he is lucky to have people who love him and who will protect him, something he himself never had. this ep took one deep dive into Daryl's childhood while still giving us the Laurent origin story. WELL DONE, Zabel.
see y'all next week!!!!

Calling a small sandpiper or plover a "lark" is apparently a very British...
... and French Canadian thing to do! 😆
I'm French Canadian (from Montreal's GMA, in Quebec).
In French, as you've mentioned, a "sandpiper" is a "bécasseau"...
And a "lark" is an "alouette"...
And French Canadians willl also call the "bécasseau" (lark) an "alouette de mer" (sea lark).
So, if you ever hear a French Canadian tell you about the "sea lark", assume it's a sandpiper, not an "alouette"! 😆
Actually Quebecers and Acadians may literally call the sandpiper a "lark" without saying "sea" before it.
Kind of like the way we call our "merle d'Amérique" a "rouge-gorge", I suppose, when the "rouge-gorge" is a very different bird.
Why do we do this? I don't know!
We were colonized by British people after they won the war, so we're a weird French/British hybrid people that stubbornly decided to keep the language, but picked up on some of the quirks and habits of our British colonizers! 😆
And larks (alouettes, not bécasseaux) are vicious!!! Seriously, here in Quebec, if you have the bad luck of getting too close to one of their nests, and not get the fuck out of there as soon as they start singing, they will aggressively fight you!
They'll fly high, and dive right on you to drive you away!
They may not be called "knights" ("chevaliers") , but they will definitely fight you!
I'm currently trying to read about sandpipers (whose behavior I'm less familiar with), trying to see if they really are as aggressive and protective as larks are...
And apparently, female sandpipers are a bit bigger, stronger, and much more aggressive than their male counterparts.
Females will tend to start multiple nests with multiple partners (up to five) during one breeding season, and will be the ones to defend their nests with ground and aerial threat displays...
...while the males are the ones that will incubate the eggs and care for the youngs.
Occasionally, the female might choose one of those males as a primary "nesting" partner, and will be willing to help him out with the chicks at some point in the breeding season, though.
So, like the female sandpiper, Jaskier is a very "giving" individual that enjoys "nesting" a bit everywhere with many, many different people (but that may choose one of those partners as a primary nesting partner, and be willing to share more responsibilities with them than he usually would)...
But yeah, one female sandpiper typically "fights" and protects her nests (plural), while up to five sandpiper males will "stay home" to take care of the babies.
Oh! And they nest close to a body of water (thinking about Jaskier instinctively wanting to head to the coast, and get away with Geralt for a while... 😆).
Larks, however, appear to form bonded pairs for life, where the chicks are taken care of by both parents. And, when their nest is being threatened, they will fly silently several feet up into the sky, then fly in circles up there for several minutes while singing, until finally launching into aerial dives attacks! 😆
And, like the male sandpiper, he's this very caring and nurturing individual that's more of a lover than a fighter, and will make sure those he chooses to take responsibility for are well emotionally fed and cared for, give them baths, sing them lullabys, educate them on how to get by in the world and find what pleases them...
They also nest right on open ground, because they're hardcore birds like that! I mean, singing you their best rendition of "The Immigrant Song", before fucking you up if you don't get out of there, should be protection enough, right?
Very effective defense strategy.
I've also discovered that the Australian "magpie-lark" is neither a magpie, nor a lark...
And now, I can't help but wonder if they are called a "lark" because of their swooping habits.
Because, that's what larks do here in North America, they swoop down right at you!
They'll sing first as a warning, then they'll swoop!
I think "The Lark" works really well for Éile because of that.
First, you'll hear her song... then, she'll whoop your arse! 😆
Jaskier's just... nesting everywhere, and being everyone's "sandpiper dad friend" that will take the time to listen to them, offer advice, put them on the right path for them to get what they need most, and just nurture the best he sees in people.
And I was saying that he "emotionally feeds" people he cares for earlier, because I don't expect him to actually feed people when he can barely feed himself.
Actually, that's not 100% true, as he got people to start paying Geralt a fair wage for his services, among others.
And he'll try to help oppressed people move to a place where they'll be safer and not risk dying, and starving, and/or having their other most basic needs ignored and denied.
So, he can technically help those he cares about literally feed themselves, in a way.
But I wouldn't expect him to actually cook people food, given he struggles with identifying common table salt when he tastes it! 😆
Geralt seems to be into cooking and seemingly good at it, and Radovid has people cooking for him, so he's going to be fine and get fed no matter who he's staying with!

Caged Little Bird
Me posting original bad stories in the middle of the night? More likely than you think
Themes of torture and kidnapping

The sound of water constantly hitting the cold cobblestone floor was going to drive me mad, yet the cold shackles had me pinned to the wall of a similar stone stopped me from being able to effectively cover my ears to stop the constant noise.
It was near impossible for me to see, there was no light except for the crescent moon shining through the barred window.
The only company I had was the abandoned cobweb in the windowsill that was barely visible except the reflective dew drops that reflected the moonlight that was barely there.
Drip
Drip

In the daylight, when I could see properly, I observed that it was full of devices that were clearly created to harm people like me I always wondered how many had been before me by how the wood seemed dyed red or by how the stone on said contraptions looked like they were caked in blood along with the smell of iron and rotting that was so pronounced when I was led across the chamber to the kneeling block or the stretcher as 'he' put it.
Those were 'his' favourite toys.
The large heavy oak door at the top of the uneven stone stairs swung open effortlessly hitting the wall with a sudden BANG
The room at the top of the stairs held a wonderful, heavenly yellow light that blinded me, a torch that lit the face of my captor as heavens light seemed to try and cast the monster in shadow, I stared into the mask of my captor. The smooth red mask with hollowed black eyes that just showed the void passed the material of said mask.

the sound of his heavy boots mimicking the pattern of the water droplets was almost hypnotizing as I watched him light the torches on the wall washing my own personal hell in some semblance of warmth. The mask never turned away from facing me I couldn't tell if he was staring at my frail body. A large, heavy black coat framed his body making him look like a haunting shadow.
I could only see his expensive leather gloves and deep red shirt sleeve that was held out to light the torches.
He cocked his head to the side before he spoke, a habit I had noticed in my time in Hell.
When he spoke, his voice was deep and booming which made me flinch violently as it echoed off the stone.
"Ah, glad to see I don't hast to waketh thee mine own littleth sparrow" even if his voice was smooth and seemingly calm there was an edge to it, I knew the violence behind that voice.
"Hast thee decided to accept mine own marriageth proposall mine own dearest? I'd prefer to freeth thee from thy littleth bird cageth"
I didn't answer as I stared at the cloaked man in the flickering flames until he violently smashed the torch into the old cobblestone sending the hot coals bouncing against the ground and I let out an almost inaudible squeak.
"Useth thy words, wench!" He demanded walking to the barred wall that separated me from the staircase like I could get out of the iron shackles.
My voice was hoarse and trembling as I stared at the angered psychopath "how… how long have I been here?" Was all my wavering voice could muster.
I heard him scoff and shake his head "only a Sennight, dearest little Sparrow"
"Then… then I still have time to decide" I squeaked out staring as his arm disappeared under the black cloak reemerging with an old set of rusty keys that jingled around freely on the large keychain.
"Aye, however doth thee wanteth to continue our littleth song and dance whence thee couldst just giveth me a 'yes'"
He replied coldly as I shook watching him, "But Nay, thee must be stubborn as thy mule"
His frame was large and imposing as he approached me the keys jingling as he put it on a belt loop of his black pants.

"Poor littlest sparrow, all aloneth all for me. Mine own little caged bird, I'll clipe thy wings so thee canst onlie sing for me" his voice came out like a purr kneeling right next to me his smooth mask nuzzling against the cool skin of my cheek. "Thee shalt see... How much thee shalt relie on me" he hissed before straightening up.
And just as quickly as he was entering the chamber to harass me he was leaving. Carefully putting out each torch to leave me in the cold dark dungeon once again, the only light was the heavenly yellow light from the stairwell that was cut off by the oak wood door shutting loudly behind my captor.

The man took off his smooth ceramic mask, carefully placing it on the hook attached to the boring beige painted walls next to another mask, that one more birdlike, red and blue with a gold beak.
"Ah brother, how didst the chat wend with thy littleth sparrow?" An older gentleman asked dressed in a red button down and black pants similar to the younger man
"Terribly, Mine own sparrow is stubborn but this rebellious nature shall break by morn or I shall break her bones" the cloaked man replied shedding his cloak to hang up.
"Weth must get her better clothing, naught such things as jeans and a simpleth shirt, it makes her seemeth liketh a peasant"
The older one nodded in understanding "I shall send the maids to town for the finest of silks, father wouldst be so proud of thy bride to be, Merle" he said clapping a hand on his brother's shoulder.
"Bless Thee, Alouette. Weth shall continueth our familie lineage yet" he said with a proud smirk as he flicked off the light switch in the hall of their little isolated mansion built atop an old castle structure.

106 500 alouettes aux pantes (filets horizontaux) et matoles (cages tombantes) dans 4 départements du Sud-Ouest (Landes, Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne et Pyrénées-Atlantiques), alors que cette espèce est en déclin continuel en France et en Europe (chute de 35% de ses effectifs reproducteurs en 15 ans en France) ;
