Stirling Moss, one of the greatest drivers in history, dies at 90

The world of Formula 1 is in mourning this Easter Sunday (12th). He died in London (ING) at the age of 90 Stirling Moss, one of the greatest drivers in the history of motorsport in the 50s and 60s. Autosport It's from State of Sao Paulo

Susie Moss, the ex-pilot's wife, told the press about her husband's death. The causes of Stirling's death were not reported, but Susie said he 'died in peace'.

Formula 1 legend

During his career, in the early years of the category's history, Moss became one of the great drivers of British motorsport.

He was the first great English idol in a category that, in his early years, was dominated by Italians and Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio.

According to the website StatsF1, which covers sport statistics, Moss ran 66 races between 1951 and 1961, with 16 victories, 16 pole positions and 24 podiums.

Moss started his racing career in the late 1940s, driving in cars with a 500cc engine, and then moving on to sports cars. First by Jaguar and then by Mercedes and Aston Martin, was champion of several races of the category in the decade of 50, as the Mille Miglia and the 1000km of Nurburgring.

But it was Formula 1 in which the English found its greatest successes. His debut in the category took place at the 1951 Swiss Grand Prix, with an HWM-Alta, finishing the race in eighth position. The following season, using cars from HWM, ERA and Connaught, his season was hampered by a series of dropouts.

His career started to stabilize around 1953, when he raced for Cooper, but it was only in 1954 that he savored the first fruits of success, when he finished third in the Belgian GP with a private Maserati.

That year, several times, Stirling Moss started well at the races, but had to abandon them.

Fangio's colleague

In 1955, much because of the successes with the brand in sports cars, he was scheduled to be a colleague of Juan Manuel Fangio at Mercedes, on his first stint in Formula 1. While the Argentine won his third world title, the Englishman won the first of four consecutive F1 runners-up, with his first victory won at home, at the British GP.

The following year, he switched from Mercedes to Maserati and was again runner-up, having won the Monaco and Italy GPs. The third vice would come in 1957, already defending a British brand, Vanwall. Tony Vandervell's team won three GPs, those from England, Pescara and Italy. Still for the English team, Moss made his fourth runner-up in 1958, having won four GPs.

One of them for Rob Walker's Cooper (at the Argentine GP, the first for a rear engine Formula 1) and three for his official team (Holland, Morocco and Portugal). In all these years, he proved to be one of the most competitive and offensive drivers in the category, always showing great performances on the tracks.

Last years in Formula 1

The loss of the fourth title of the category to his countryman Mike Hawthorn, who drove Ferrari, made him rethink his career and abandon the fight for champion trophies for good and concentrate on winning races and having fun on the tracks.

In 1959, he directed Cooper de Rob Walker and BRM of the British Racing Partnership, winning for the first time the races in Italy and Portugal. He was third in the classification of the world of drivers.

Moss would be third in F1 in the 1960 seasons (he won the Monaco and US GPs) and in 1961 (wins in Monaco and the USA). Always defending Rob Walker's team, with his Coopers and, later, Lotus. The first victory for Colin Chapman's cars came from Moss with Walker's team.

Accident ends his career

Moss's career in Formula 1 and motorsport in general ended in 1962. in a serious accident in a race at Goodwood where he was in a coma for a month.

After the end of his career, he started to dedicate himself to the job of entrepreneur and consultant.

Stirling Moss, with a rather reserved life, made his last appearance in 2016 at Goodwood. That same year, he suffered from an infection in Singapore and spent the last years of his life fighting for his health, until his death.

In Formula 1, Moss became for many the greatest driver to ever win the Drivers' Championship, coming close four times. But even so, putting your name in the history of the category

Today we say goodbye to Sir Stirling Moss, the racing legend. I certainly will miss our conversations. I am truly grateful to have had these special moments with him. Sending my prayers and thoughts to his family. May he rest in peace

The Technique of Motor Racing by Piero Taruffi

The Technique of Motor Racing by Piero Taruffi is the book that all other instructional motor racing books are measured against.

It was written by Taruffi, nicknamed the “Silver Fox”, in 1959 after he retired from motor racing in 1957 following a promise to his wife to retire once he’d won the Mille Miglia.

He was 50 years old when he won the legendary 1,000 mile endurance road race, adding the victory to his win in the 1952 Swiss Grand Prix as well as the Targa Florio, the Tour of Sicily, and the 1000km of Nürburgring. Taruffi started his career racing on two-wheels, winning the 1932 500cc European Championship on a Norton, then in 1937 he set the motorcycle land speed record at 173.68 mph.

The full list of Piero Taruffi’s achievements is far too long to list here, he drove for the work teams of Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, and many others in a career that spanned over 25 years. What set him apart from many of his contemporaries was the fact that he was a trained engineer, he applied his engineering knowledge to his racing, designing many vehicles himself including successful land speed record breakers and race cars.

It was this formal engineering training coupled with his natural driving ability that set Taruffi apart, and made him the perfect person to write “The Technique of Motor Racing” a book that became the bible for all serious racing drivers for decades to come.

The book is 125 pages long and it includes a wealth of information that will improve any driver, including optimal driving positions, cornering techniques, limit of adhesion, how to drive on banked corners, general advice for racing drivers, pre-race preparation and techniques and maps of the major circuits of the era including: Zanvoort, Sebring, Nurburgring, Monza, Imola, and Monaco.

Both hard and softcover versions of the book are available, I don’t think it’s currently in print however you can still buy good original examples on Amazon.

Hello Thank you for entering in my post I've been with Admiral insurance for more than 1 year, which is my 1st car insurance since I've been in England I've been driving for more than 12 years and I've never made a claim before it was a normal and clear day and i was going to work when I had an accident with a girl riding a moped It was a very silly accident, fortunatelly none was injured, and I only had a broken wind-mirrow, which is no more than 50 of damage I had to call Admiral, my insurer, to sort the problem out, I had no other choice Admiral told me I was not covered to go to work since on the policy agreement says: use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes only. And, according to them, to be covered, my policy had to be: use for social and COMMUNITY. So Community for them means, going to work, it is ridiculas but that's what i was told However they said we cover you, you will have to pay 23.74 extra and you will be covered, it was frustrating, a theft, but I let it go... The absurd story didn't even start yet! I gave Admiral all the details which the police had given to me the day of the accident plus some pictures of the scene, which I took before to leave that day Admiral sent an inspector who interwied me at my house. This inspector wrote a statement of 6 PAGES! about my accident, however, I need to say, he did a very good job On the statement states that none was injured and the fault lies with the moped rider, which is also what the police said on the scene. In addtion this inspector suggested to call my insurer again to finally get my car fixed. Admiral told me I will have to pay for the damage myself and, after all their investigation, if they find out it was not my fault, I can ask e refund for the damage, and they added that this investigation can take up to 3 years, so I will have my money back in 3 years! this is because according to them, the moper rider was injured This is absolutely incredible What would you suggest? Mercedes-AMG Project One Could Try for All-Time Nurburgring Record

Mercedes is aiming high with its Project One hypercar. AMG boss Tobias Moers suggested the car could rival the all-time Nürburgring record set 35 years ago by the Porsche 956.

Moers told Autocar that it was “reasonable to speculate” that Project One would go after the 6-minute, 11.1-second record set at the 1983 Nürburgring 1000km by German driver Stefan Bellof. Achieving such a time in the Project One will require “finding the right driver,” Moers admits. If the Project One accomplishes a record time, it would be quite remarkable considering it’s destined to be a production car. The current production road car record was set by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS in 6 minutes, 47 seconds.

The Project One will come with a 1.6-liter V-6 and electric motors creating around 1,000 hp in total. Moers says that the car’s quoted output is only what its hybrid engine is making on the dynamometer currently, and that actual numbers would be greater but likely not exceed 1,100 hp. Top speed should exceed 217 mph.

A month ago, Moers revealed the Project One will generate half its weight in downforce. The model should scale in between 1,300 and 1,400 kg, or 2,866 and 3,086 pounds.

The Project One will sell for around £2.4 million, or around $3.3 million at today’s exchange rates. AMG has received 1,100 customer requests, but it only plans to make 275 copies.

MORE than 150 classic cars lined the grounds of the Cottesloe Civic Centre,  none more intriguing than the 1936 Sunbeam Thirty Phaeton once owned by King Edward VIII.

The occasion was Western Australia’s annual Celebration of the Motor Car.

Presented to His Highness by the Rootes Group immediately after the London Motor Show, the Sunbeam was a magnificent machine, with body by Thrupp and Maberley, and had a 4.5-litre straight-eight motor.

But the King abdicated the throne soon after and the car was sent back to the Rootes Group, from where it emerged a little later – but with a six-cylinder engine, a different grille, and different badging.

The company had rebirthed the Sunbeam as a Humber Imperial.

Why?

Was the company siding with the British aristocracy, which was very much against the King’s plan to marry thrice-divorced US citizen Wallis Simpson?

Or did it regard the King’s Buick as a slap in the face?

King Eddie had bought a Canadian-built Buick from Lendrum & Hartman in London, shortly before he took delivery of the Sunbeam, and specified that it be fitted with  drinks cabinets, vanity mirrors, reading lights, correspondence facilities, radio, smokers cabinet, jewellery cabinet and lunch trays.

He abdicated in December, 1936, shipped the Buick to France and drove it for the next three years.

It was sold quite recently with 0 km on its odo for about $200,000, complete with its original log book, stating the first owner to he “H.M. The King, St James’s Palace, SW1”, and a photo album to the point when it was handed over to the King.

The Humber ended up in Western Australia’s York Motor Museum and was later bought and restored by its private owner.

Other cars of that era included a 1935 Riley Sprite, one of five built for the Le Mans 24-Hour (it finished fourth), a superb MG NA of 1934, with a supercharged 1271cc six-cylinder engine, a newly-restored Alfa Romeo 6C of the early 1930s, a big variety of Bentleys from WOs to later models and a lovely 1939 Citroen six-cylinder with sweeping cabrio coachwork.

The Bartlett Special, based on a 1927 Salmson, was there with its impressive tally of achievements, including the lap record of 115 mph for the Brooklands Mountain Track in 1932, lap record for the Albany Round the Houses of 1936 a second spot in the 1946 Victory Grand Prix and a win in 1948 at Caversham.

It has an 1100cc twin-cam engine and remains a frequent competitor in local regularity events.

There was an immaculate 1948 Talbot Lago Suprofile coupe and other Euro rarities included  a 1983 Matra Murena, an Alpine 110 and a 1951 Mercedes 170VA that started life as a sedan in Singapore, arrived in Australia in 1966 with (0 km) on its odometer, lay forgotten in a shed for decades and was rescued in 2008.

It has since been restored, converted to a cabriolet and its odo now reads (0 km).

American cars were well represented with several Cadillacs, one of them a 1953 El Dorado which was used for President Eisenhower’s inauguration, a drop-dead gorgeous 1928 Caddy Roadster with a 341 cubic inch V8 and all-synchro gearbox and a 1939 convertible, one of 27 made in the weeks before the start of WWII.

A 1970 Plymouth Superbird, homologated for racing in the US, showed early attempts at aerodynamics with its sleek snoot and an outrageous rear wing – but they made quite a difference.

There was also an early Chevrolet Corvette, from the first batch of mass-produced models in 1954, with two-speed automatic transmission.

Cars in competition livery included an E-Type Jaguar replica of Briggs Cunningham and Bob Grossman’s 1963 attempt at Le Mans and a Lancia Fulvia presented as Sandro Munari’s 1972 win in the Monte Carlo Rally.

Most expensive car on show was a LaFerrari Aperta. There were many other Ferraris and Maseratis, a rare De Tomaso Guara with less than 1000km on its odometer and the sole example in the southern hemisphere of the brand’s last model, a McLaren, some Lotus variants – and a Renault Twizy electric car, its chilling message: Power the future.

And finally, there was a neat 1950 Riley RM drophead that once served as a makeshift truck, carrying building materials, and got a coat of brush-applied yellow paint before it was saved from further abuse.

It was restored, refurbished, freshly loved and has rewarded its saviours with many miles of joyous travel.

Sunbeam the King sent back MORE than 150 classic cars lined the grounds of the Cottesloe Civic Centre,  none more intriguing than the 1936 Sunbeam Thirty Phaeton once owned by King Edward VIII.

Company hacked a Tesla to drive on hydrogen 😏 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tesla is a fascinating brand, which not only innovates it's stuff, but also makes the world more ecological 👍...Well, besides the process od making the batteries, but that's another story 😉. . Typical Tesla model S has a range of around 300 miles (500km), but what if there was a way to double this number and make it a better driving experience? 😎 . A company situated in Netherlands called Holthausen group made it happen with hydrogen. They said it was really hard to find a way, becouse Tesla have an amazing engineering done on the car and they pretty much had to hack in it! 😉 . They called their project "Hesla". Can be Also explained as Tesla+Hydrogen = Hesla. This car has a hydrogen fuel tank in the back, which converts to a battery power 😏. This makes the car able of more than a 600 miles (1000km). 😎 . Unfortunettly there are a few disadvantages. First, the additional hydrogen tank costs $59,000 and second, there are only 39 hydrogen fuel stations in the US. But as Holthausen says, they'll try to update these things and hope the new owners will help them 👍😉. . Anyway, Holthausen isn't the only company trying to make a hydrogen project work, there's also a Mercedes trying from September, Toyota and Honda who are investing in the future of hydrogen 😎. .
