There’s a strange bitterness in the realization that the sadness and fear I’ve carried has kept me from the beauty I could’ve embraced. I see the things I could’ve had, the things I could’ve done, the things I could’ve been, and they were just out of my reach.

I could have felt joy, connection, love, but the fear of it being fleeting or imperfect kept me in a place of suspended existence. I was always so focused on what might go wrong that I never let myself experience what could go right.

The cruelty of it is in how much I really wanted to be apart of it all, how much I longed for those connections, those experiences. Yet I never allowed myself to be apart of them, retreating into myself, denying myself the moments I could’ve had.

I just continued telling myself that it wasn’t the right time, that tomorrow would be easier, that I’d be ready when it counts. But time slipped away unnoticed, the years stacking up, and with each passing day, the fear grew heavier. I see people living, taking chances, failing, succeeding, and all I can do is wish I could do the same.

My fear didn’t just keep me from living—it convinced me that the cost of living was too high. It told me that everything was fragile, and anything I gave would be lost. So I gave nothing, I held back, and in doing so, I gave up the chance to experience the fullness of life.

I’ve not only missed the grand moments; I’ve missed the small, quiet ones too—those fleeting instances that could’ve meant everything. It was never destiny’s design, just the way I kept myself from living.

And so there is a quiet grief in this realization—a sorrow not just for what was lost, but for the knowing that I alone stood in my way.
