Der Medienkünstler Nam June Paik hat in den 1960er Jahren den ersten nicht-menschlichen Aktionskünstler der Geschichte gebaut. 2018 lässt der japanische Robotiker Hiroshi Ishiguro den Androiden Alter 3 eine Oper dirigieren und Pinar Yoldas’ Kitty AI übernimmt die Weltherrschaft. Diese spannende Ausstellung im NRW-Forum Düsseldorf zeigt, wie Künstler*innen die Grenzen von Mensch und Maschine immer wieder neu definieren.

...Samsung hat im April 2016 ein Patent für eine smarte Kontaktlinse eingereicht, die über ein Display und eine Kamera verfügt. Elektronische Bestandteile wie eine Antenne sollen die Daten vom Smartphone direkt an die Linse und somit das Auge weitergeben. Sensoren reagieren auf die Bewegungen des Auges und können so nachvollziehen, wohin der Benutzer schaut. Informationen, zum Beispiel Navigationsanweisungen, sollen mithilfe des Displays direkt ins Auge projiziert werden können. Die Technik der smarten Kontaktlinsen ist unsichtbar. Das Gegenüber weiß nichts von dem Computer im Auge. Verschiedene Ansätze zeigen, dass wir Wearables bald schon nicht mehr nur am, sondern im Körper tragen könnten. Unter dem Projektnamen Proteus haben britische Forscher Pillen mit Mikroprozessoren hergestellt, die den behandelnden Arzt wissen lassen, ob die verschriebene Medikation richtig eingenommen wird und ob sie den gewünschten Zweck erfüllt. Unterstützt von der Gates Foundation wurde in einem MIT-Projekt eine Pille zur Empfängnisverhütung entwickelt, die über eine Fernbedienung gesteuert und damit je nach Bedarf an- und ausgeschaltet werden kann. Implantiert wird ein Chip, der über 16 Jahre lang kleine Mengen eines empfängnisverhütenden Hormons produziert. Als Ersatz für den Personalausweis könnten in Zukunft RFID-Chips unter die Haut eingepflanzt werden, die eine Person sowohl identifizieren als auch lokalisieren. Das US-Militär hat diese Technologie bereits eingesetzt, um den genauen Standort von Truppen ermitteln zu können. Was für das Militär ein Garant für Kontrolle und Sicherheit ist, erscheint anderen als Big-Brother-Horrorszenario. Mit dem Einzug der Technik in den Körper würden wir nicht nur einer noch lückenloseren Datenüberwachung zustimmen, sondern uns auch in ein immer größeres Abhängigkeitsverhältnis begeben. Denn was passiert, wenn die Technik einmal ausfällt oder gar gehackt wird? Die revolutionären technologischen Umwälzungen der vergangenen Jahrhunderte haben unseren Alltag und unsere Gewohnheiten stark verändert. Unsere Wahrnehmung und unsere Fähigkeiten sind anders als vor hundert Jahren – nicht aber unser geistiger Platz in der Welt. Das wird sich auch in den nächsten hundert Jahren nicht ändern. Menschen sind kein programmierbarer „Code“, dafür sind sie zu vielschichtig, komplex – und irrational. Deshalb wird Technologie uns nie zu Übermenschen machen können, selbst wenn sie unseren Aktionsradius erweitert oder mithilfe von Self Tracking unsere Selbstdisziplin befeuert. ...

The more I think about it, the less I know what to think about my reawakening interest in clothing and cosmetics. For so long, I have been entirely content to just roll out of bed when I need to (or, at the worst times, when I could no longer bear to stay in bed, or not at all for an entire day) and just throw on something to prevent myself from freezing. My modest make-up collection spent a good few years collecting dust. I even had to throw away a few things like eyeliner (I think had three different ones), mascara and a good third of my nail polish collection (about ten or so, I cried) recently, because they were dried up or too thick to be useable. Still sorting through the nail polish, to be honest…

And on one hand, it is fun to use myself as a canvas once more. I like the contrast between the colourful or dark nail polish I use and my skin. I love the way my hands look with painted nails. I like my face better when I’m wearing eyeshadow, and eyeliner, and all that stuff. It also prevents my eyes from “disappearing” behind my glasses. I love wearing beautiful clothes. I usually have great fun picking out clothes to wear, matching the occasion & my mood at the same time.

I think I like having the time and mindset to think about such “superficial” stuff again. Still, I can’t help but worrying that this is not a sign of me getting better, but rather a sign of me retreating further behind another mask. A pretty tangible and obvious one, but a mask nonetheless. But then, I have been calling the process of crawling out of bed and getting ready for the day “putting on my human mask” for a while now, so there’s that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It sounds funnier in German though.

Skipping to something only tangentially related, I found out today that there are companies selling eyeshadow for almost 20€. (I am sure there are even more expensive alternatives. Mind-boggling.) I always knew I was a cheapskate with my eyeshadows averaging at 2€ a piece, but ten times as much is ridiculous. There’s vegan, cruelty-free cosmetics available for less than half that. Well, actually, there’s vegan, cruelty-free cosmetics available for less than a quarter of that. What does that 20€ eyeshadow do? Give me superpowers, pay my taxes, bring about world peace? It’s insane.

My wallet weeps, anyway.

Addendum: I also don’t know how to feel about the fact that all of those things are considered womanly or feminine or however it is being called these days, and I am really really unsure if I am in any way fine with that… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, I should really go to sleep because all of this sounded way more coherent in my head.

The late 19th century. The peace in Lieutenant Anderson's small town has been disturbed by unsolved cases of mutilation and murder. Strange, obscure, but utterly harmless. Hank doesn't share the prejudices of some people and an unexpected encounter in a small storage room distracts him from the case for good. Charmed by a certain cute face, Hank is unaware that this encounter will turn this young man's world upside-down. It might have been love at first sight but it's never that easy.
