Menhera (メンヘラ) is an abbreviation of “Mental Healther”, meaning “someone who does mental health”, and refers to a subculture centered around a certain style of vent art as well as fashion featuring it.

Hello, and thank you for your interest in the very first Menhera VN Jam! This is a jam for games about living and coming to terms (or not) with unseen burdens, whether they be mental, emotional, physical, psychological, or otherwise.

We will play through all the submissions and pick FIVE of our favorites which will receive a $250 paypal headpat. There will be no first place. There will just be 5 judge favorites. Due to payment reasons, all members of teams involved must be legal adults.

Please note that, in addition to the overall quality of the works—writing, art, music, etc.—one of the primary criteria in determining which entries will be granted an award is being on-topic.  In other words, while the individual elements of a work are important to their overall composition, a work with a conventionally "bad" component (e.g. very amateurish art) will not lose points on those grounds alone. Intention and sincerity are the most important parts of our judging criteria, so try and make something representative of your heart more than anything!

Six of me at once. Some people would call that a crying shame (like <a certain famous funnyman voice> mY wIFE) but you know you love it or, plot twist for ya, you're gonna. 1: "So which one of us is gonna take the lead?" 2: "I dunno, I thought you were." 3: "HE was? But I thought it was gonna be ME!" 4 (They Call Him...Mister Blue): "Pretty sure it's gonna be me and all y'alls are gonna frighten off the ladies. 5: "Pretty sure it's 'hoes' around these parts. Y'know, scaring the hoes, not good." 6 (Call Him Mister Less Blue): "Don't call them hoes! In this house! We! RESPECT WOMEN!" This could've gone on for a while if I wanted it. You guys don't really get it. I'm good at this kinda thing. Too good, even. My buddy ol pal ol friend always says, "Bucket, my good best buddy in the whole wide world," (imagine he says it but sadder, my pal, he's gotta get more Vitamin D), "you're too good at this. I stood around in a circle, in formation, ignorant of you guys watching me because, to be honest, like, I'm a funny little guy, aren't I? If I'm not amusing you yet, I will. Just a silly little guy. We can call me...Mister Blue, no no no wait, I say in response to a withering glare and sigh from my friend, my buddy, the OOC of Endings you can't see him he's off camera. That guy is always being so serious, sigh, I get it. 4: Let's take this from the top! Hiya hiya hiya cuties! How's it going! My name is Bucket Farce! With that, I take a bow, deep down to the floor. I form my adorable face into the most profound expression I have observed on my way towards this weird little place with so many weird little people to do weird little things with. 4: Let's have fun together! :3 I promise nothing weird will happen at all!!! ------------------------------------------------- Kind of a rough idea. Still experimenting with how it feels to be around these guys. You'll all see some of that in the finished VN. Bucket Farce is someone for whom physicality and form are suggestions. He is a shapeshifter. The only rule he follows is that he must always have a head and that head is always covered in a bucket. I'll leave to your imagination what all that could mean but it does mean it is as nothing to him to be six people at once and to just as quickly be just one person.

He identifies as a 'he' but it is a shorthand and matter of convenience. In truth, he could be anything under the bucket and has just chosen to identify as a silly little guy as opposed to something boring or profound or difficult to explain. He is a cute character with some amazing sprites in store. I believe one inspiration was Dimentio and that Lotus has spent time in Sonic fan spaces as an artist. I believe that all shines through clearly here for a character I hope will be memorable when you all meet him. ^^ As always, stay tuned. I share as I get things to share and we're really picking up on the way towards the July 1st deadline for the jam.

Though unfortunately I wasn't able to make a game for it due to unforeseen circumstances, I've been playing through the submissions for this year's Menhera game jam and there's a lot of good stuff in there.

If you're in the mood for some short queer VNs, I'd recommend Passion Paradox and Satisfaction Drone especially, though I'm only halfway through the submissions so there's a lot I've yet to see.

Gosto muito de ler e escrever, escrevo principalmente poemas, tento expressar ao máximo que estou sentindo com eles, tenho certo receio de acharem ruins ou bobos, mas me esforço. Meus livros favoritos são O Colecionador e Coraline, e comecei a ler A Ilha das Sete Luas. Gosto muito de escutar música, minha vida sem ela seria deprimente, eu diria. Laranja e com cores vibrantes, ou seja, tudo que eu odeio. Apesar de saber desenhar, não prático muito, então acaba ficando bem de lado essa "habilidade".

Hobbies que pretendo ter;

Os mais próximos que estou de começar, é a academia, então será já uma evolução. Queria começar a tocar violino, eu já tenho um - ainda não tem nome -, só preciso arrumar as cordas e comprar a cera para começar. De esportes, queria fazer ballet e natação. Sou fascinada em ballet desde que me entendo por gente, então seria um sonho a se realizar. E também desejo começar a fazer crochê.

(More writing ahead of the release of my game jam first ever visual novel, still titled Purple Prose for Purple Hearts. This time, we come to Pravd. You could call her the embodiment of my dysphoria if you could turn it into a cute, threatening girl. A kind of Umineko Danganronpa, if you will. ART NOT BY ME: It was drawn by a talented artist, Mellowshaymin) "Hahaha! Wow! You should see the look on your face, lady. You'd think we were gonna kill you or something, LOL - great phrase btw, LOL, and btw too. You little weirdoes are crazy, hehehehe. Well, I mean...it's not like we WEREN'T going to kill you." ^_^ "I mean, I wasn't, I prooooooomise~ It's just that, y'know, tall, floating and angsty over there... Yyyyyyikes, y'know what I mean? Am I too informal? Ah. I'm too informal. You're looking a little comfy with me. So, I should tell you in no uncertain terms: I wasn't going to kill you...but I could always change my mind. Your world could be screwed but you don't have to be!" Pravd is an interdimensional traveler. She has the qualifications to be a OOC but is not, for some reason. Eventually, she may possibly become something like the devil; she's too remarkable, smart, and powerful now to be human. She is a trans woman the universe took apart over and over again before shaping her into a AFAB. As such, she is living her best life; because her life before then was extremely cruel, her best life has been extremely cruel to others. Pravd has been a mad scientist, the culprit in murder mysteries, and has created the worst virus in the universe. Pravd does what she does out of a place of denial of her tragic past and because she is trying to earn the love of a certain person. In Purple Prose, though, she is just here to hang. In Purple Prose, you hang out with something of a cosmic supervillain. For an epilogue. I could not find a place for her in the main story but you'll hear her voice in it.

Anyways, there will be more to come! I continue to work away slowly at it and am very very very excited!

gerry (trad goth) meets jon immediately during a kidnapping when hes bloody and stressed and holding an ancient skin bound tome having just effortlessly summoned a dead man for moral advice on the apocalypse and is currently metamorphosing into an avatar of a cosmic horror: ive never been so thoroughly outclassed. i have feelings for this man (this feeling was friendship, but neither had experienced it before)

verdict: call me gerry and burn my page/body <3

oliver (industrial goth) rolls up to the hospital to meet his personal paralysis demon who will cure him of Evil Death Dreams by virtue of looping his personal death every night and finds an empty room bc jons aura destroys technology and also he has no heartbeat and needs to be Sleeping Beautied with the kiss of death: im so sorry the nurses wiped off your eyeliner king, this isnt what u deserved

verdict: personally directs his post-apocalypse report to jon instead of his god

georgie (mall goth) just freshly Touched By Death when she meets jon smoking alone in an alley outside the venue when he offers her company before a metal concert shes only going to bc she doesnt fear the moshpit anymore and wants to experience some emotions but he likes bc it drowns out his thoughts and then she immediately finds out hes not only at her university but also in her ghost-based major: ah, hell guess i am bi after all. do you want to adopt a cat together

verdict: it was cool before it got weird? jon turned out to be too goth for georgie to handle vampire bf style

melanie (menhera/punk) meets jon in a dingy basement office after being attacked by a ghost and spends half the time bouncing ideas off him like quarters about the occult and supernatural that he responds to easily even if they disagree on certain subjects and he offers to vouch for her to have free access to the largest occult library in london: idk if i want to kill this man or befriend him and thats the highest compliment i have

annabelle (classic goth lolita) god knows how when or why (annabelle knows) but the web likes him and shes a bit charmed by the self-aware dark academia aesthetic paired up with equally self-aware classic gothic romanticism of moral and ethical questioning while transitioning into monsterhood and swinging violently between Owning That Shit and fearing it respectfully while also being the linchpin in an apocalyptic ritual doomed to succeed: ok this man can have some free will, but only bc its funny

OG!sasha (cybergoth) there is a reason jon&sasha are friends in season 1 and it is bc she is goth and jon just wont admit he loves spooky shit outloud, but sasha knows since she walked in on the first day playing some classic goth jam on her phone and jon namedropped them upon hearing it and then swore her to secrecy bc He Has A Serious Reputation To Maintain, Sasha but now she Knows and aggressively befriends him under that blackmail

4. Do you prefer painting or drawing?

I consider a lot of paintings as drawings and drawings as paintings, weirdly enough... I do like drawing though because painting can be a struggle sometimes.

9. What’s your current favorite show?

Because you mentioned YOI and it reminded me about the time I really could not stop oggling Yuri every scene of him just made me just stare so deeply in a trance... have not watched a lot of shows lately though... Taibani is pretty good!

10. What’s your go to comfort movie?

I got several from Monsters Inc. to Austin Powers to Cat in the hat to Shrek to Repo: Genetic Opera, they are really nice and comforting to watch sometimes. Chill and funny movies

23. What’s the last show you binge-watched?

Oh my god, the last show I binged-watched was with you ... Was Victorious is ALL I can remember and iCarly. Also that one terrible disney+ series with JOHN STAMOS.

30. Who’s your favorite fictional character currently?

Towa.... And Power & Denji! They really bring me a lot of joy and comfort as of late. There is a lot of characters I tend to just love all together like Kazuaki-kun, especially Kazuaki-kun!

31. What instantly come to mind when you hear the word “love”?

Shows like YOI and Sheith, and Ignoct really comes to my mind when it comes to "love"! They all have shown me different ways of love that are extremely connected and that is growing bonds between each other, as well as unconditional love and support... It's always such a massive comfort

32. What was your first fandom?

I would say Sonic, but I wasn't as deep as I was with Smash bros. Brawl because I was super into it more and for YEAARS on gaiaonline avi cosplaying as one of the fighters and interacted with a lot of the others that loved it and played online with them. Other fandoms that i think were "first" should stay in the dark however.

36. What was the first ship you obsessed over?

It's between Sonadow and FoxFalco... just between those two was the first ship I obsessed heavily over..

37. How old were you when Toxic by Britney Spears came out?

Big fan of Miss Britney Spears, I was 5 years old lmao... I think would listen to it non-stop when I was 6-7. I did not comprehend ANY of the lyrics what they meant, but was jamming to it on AOL Kids..

39. Tea or coffee?

Knowing that you live with me, I drink both... At times I refrain from drinking one of them, but I do love me some tea! I love tea a lot because love talking about the plants and herbs used to make them since you know I love plants.

40. Do you have any collections?

I used to collect bottle caps (Beer ones, sodas, you name it) and rocks... A WHOLE lot of rocks. Now I just collect buttons and figures! Current collection now is just out hatoful bird plushies!

42. Do you have any specific kind of style?

Hm... If in fashion, by default it's goth/lounging style. I like to wear a lot of long sleeves when I can, whether black or not... I do want to wear dress shirts when we are out more though, they are pretty comfy, but I like doing it in layers in which isn't weather friendly or me friendly because of weather. Also... Menhera.

50. What’s something from you loved your childhood that you still proudly like now?

What sticks to me the most is Persona and Yume nikki! The once obscured series Persona has become so big thanks to 4 and ESPECIALLY 5.. but I love just talking non-stop about Yume nikki since it's very much a part of my life and has helped me a lot even if it's just mere "pixel game with no plot than just collect effects", it's so much more than that to me. Plants and bugs (especially moths/Butterflies) are still my specialty enjoyment from my childhood!
