Joseph Elledge, Missouri inmate 1370884, born 1995, incarceration intake at age 26, scheduled for release 2049.
Murder
Admitted to killing his wife Mengqi Ji, and was sentenced to 28 years in prison, the maximum amount of time allowed.
The Judge read the sentencing aloud in Boone County court and offered his condolences to Ji's family and specifically her daughter.
Elledge was found guilty of second degree. murder following a nine-day trial. The jury recommended a 28-year sentence following his conviction, and the prosecuting attorney argued for the maximum sentence during the trial and at the sentencing hearing. The defendant deserves no break because he displayed no remorse," he said.
Ji was reported missing by Elledge on Oct. 10, 2019. Her remains were found by hikers in Rock Bridge Memorial State Park in March 2021.
The Judge also denied a motion for a new trial. The Defense attorney made seven arguments in his motion, including that the state failed to prove deliberation and did not provide evidence of Ji's cause of death.
During the hearing Knight called a new witness to the stand. An investigator with the prosecutor's office said he listened to about 300 calls and conversations, a total of 60 hours, that Elledge had while in the Boone County Jail.
The Boone County Jail Administrator said Elledge was given special accommodations by the jail. He was allowed to take college classes and was moved around the jail based on his requests.
The Prosecuting attorney called Elledge the "biggest complainer in the history of the Boone County Jail." Elledge filed 28 grievances with the jail about its temperature and noises from the HVAC, plumbing, faucets, toilets and TV. Elledge called the noises "cruel and unusual punishment."

Body found in Missouri state park positively identified as missing Chinese woman COLUMBIA, MO (KCTV) — According to the police department, the human remains found at Rock Bridge State Park in Columbia have been identified as those of a Chinese woman who has been missing since Oct. 2019. According to the Columbia Police Department, the body was positively identified as that of Mengqi Ji via dental records. “This is another step in a very thorough, continuing investigation that started in October 2019,” said Columbia Mayor Bryan Treece. “Because Columbia Police and many other agencies never gave up, the victim is named: Mengqi Ji.” “From here we will continue to examine physical evidence and follow any additional investigative leads generated by the recovery of Mengqi Ji’s remains,” said Assistant Police Chief Jeremiah Hunter, who notified Ji’s parents her remains had been identified. “There are other families of violent crimes suffering, and we continue to work their cases,” said Police Chief Geoff Jones. “We ask for the public’s help in solving those crimes.” Ji was first reported missing back on the evening of Oct. 10, 2019 by her husband Joseph Elledge. He said he had last seen her on the night of Oct. 8, 2019 when she went to bed and that she was missing when he woke up on Oct. 9. During their investigation, Columbia police found evidence that a child Ji and Elledge shared had been abused. “Detectives found probable cause to arrest Elledge for child abuse, and he was remanded to the custody of the Boone County Jail,” a release from the police said. Police also found that Elledge had visited multiple conservation areas surrounding Boone County in the time before he reported Ji as a missing person. During the investigation, police used the location history of his phone and were able to find that he spent time in one specific location more than anywhere else: the De Bourgmont Access of the Lamine River at Highway 41. He spend 45 minutes there, police say. Joseph Elledge was indicted for first-degree murder by a grand jury on Feb. 28, 2020 in Boone County. He remains remanded to the Boone County Jail. The investigation continued and police were notified on March 25, 2021 by park rangers that a hiker had located possible human remains while at Rock Bridge State Park. While processing the scene, several items were found that were consistent with items that reportedly belonged to Ji. As previously stated, dental records have now identified those remains as Ji’s. The investigation is ongoing. Columbia police are asking anyone who knows anything to call the police department at 573-874-7652, or reach out to CrimeStoppers at 573-875-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous. According to the Associated Press, “Ji received a master’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Missouri in December 2014. She previously attended the East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai.” KCTV5.com is now with you on the go! Police in Missouri resume search for missing Chinese woman | National News
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Police in central Missouri have resumed the search for the body of a Chinese woman who has been missing in Missouri for a year.
Mengqi Ji Elledge, 28, was reported missing by her husband, Joseph Elledge, on Oct. 10, 2019. He was charged in February with first-degree murder in her death and has pleaded not guilty. The couple has a young child.
Police had searched for her remains at the Lamine River near Booneville after cadaver dogs hit on a scent there. Boonville is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Kansas City, Missouri. A temporary levee was constructed at the site to help the search but the effort stopped in June.
Assistant Police Chief Jeremiah Hunter said in a news release Wednesday that the water level at the site has recently dropped significantly, revealing that part of the levee was still present.
The remaining parts of the levee will be removed and searched by investigators for any evidence of Ji, The Columbia Daily Tribune reported.
Elledge and Ji married in 2017 and attended the University of Missouri.
The Ji family said in a statement that they appreciate the police department’s efforts during the last year but will not be satisfied until Ji’s body is found.
“We will never give up looking for Mengqi,” the family said. “We continue to hope for answers so that she can have a proper burial and we can have a funeral.”
Elledge also pleaded not guilty in March to domestic assault and child abuse charges related to the couple’s young daughter.

‘Manipulative psychopath’: Columbia man charged with murdering wife who disappeared in October
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The American husband of a Chinese woman who has been missing since October was charged Wednesday in her death, even though her body hasn’t been found.
Joseph Elledge, of Columbia, Missouri, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 28-year-old Mengqi Ji, according to court records.
Joseph Elledge courtesy Boone County Jail
Elledge, who quickly was named as the prime suspect in her disappearance, was already charged with child endangerment and abuse of a child. Prosecutors say Elledge separated his wife from their 1-year-old daughter and that the separation created “a substantial risk” to the girl. Her maternal grandparents and paternal grandparents share custody.
Amy Salladay, the attorney for Ji’s family, said the girl turned 1 just days before her mother went missing and that she was still being breastfed at the time.
Boone County Chief Prosecutor Dan Knight described Elledge as a “jealous, controlling, manipulative psychopath,” during a November hearing.
In an audio recording that was played during that hearing, Elledge can be heard telling his wife “I don’t like being with you,” ”I’m eager to end it” and “I will bury the earth under you.” Ji is heard arguing with her husband, who raises his voice several times. At one point, he tells her, “I know you want me to hit you,” and, “This, it’s not abusive.”
A Columbia police detective wrote in the probable cause affidavit filed in the child abuse case that Elledge took a long drive through unfamiliar remote areas of central Missouri before reporting his wife missing.
Authorities have been searching for Ji’s body in the Lamine River near Boonville.
According to a probable cause statement for the murder charge, K-9 units on the Lamine River in the area of Highway 41 had alerted to the presence of human decomposition in the river.
In addition to the K-9 hit, investigators also said that there has been no communication between Mengqi and her family and friends since Oct. 8, behavior that her family says is highly unusual.
When he was questioned by police, Elledge allegedly admitted that he and the victim had been having marital troubles and that she was not willing to have sex with him for several months.
During a search of the home the two shared, investigators allegedly found written statements that closely matched the statement Elledge gave during his interview with police as well as interview tips that reminded him to refer to Mengqi in the present tense.
Mengqi Ji Elledge received a master’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Missouri in December 2014. She previously attended the East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai.
Elledge was studying at the University of Missouri when he was arrested last year.

My first criminal court experience
I followed up on the missing person case of Menqi Ji Elledge, who went missing in Columbia early October. Her husband had a court date on Monday, so I wanted to get a probable cause statement of his arrest. He is a subject in the investigation of Mengqi’s disappearance.
Honestly, I wasn’t looking forward to following up to it-- I had never covered anything related to crime or missing persons, so I wasn’t sure I knew what I was doing. But, if there’s anything I learned in journalism, it’s that the best way to learn something is to just throw yourself at it. None of us (at first) are experts at what we do. I don’t have as much experience with courts as someone who may be in the state or local government beats, but I wonder if they also struggle with the idea of covering education!
Anyway, it was a good experience. I walked to court downtown, which wasn’t far away. Once I got in, I didn’t know where I was going, so I definitely had to ask some questions. I think the staff noticed I was probably new, so I hope they felt relieved that I at least asked instead of wandering around with like a chicken with my head cut off.
Eventually, I found the court room, and the hearing was brief. I ended up exchanging information with Mengqi’s husband’s lawyer, so in the future, if anyone at the paper is covering his case, they can contact the lawyer.
