January 1st 1848 saw riots by Irish navvies in Stonehaven.
As the years go by it never ceases to amaze me on the history I pick up. Now I know the headline above says Irish, but from what I can gather this was as much instigated by "Highlanders" as it was any Irish, in fact there isn't a lot to say that Irish were involved at all, the headline comes courtesy of one of my main source pages that I check, day in day out, I am pretty sure this must have been added to in the past twelve months as I had never come across it before.
Anyway after some digging around I found a source that has a report from the Aberdeen Journall dated 12 January 1848, the dates are a wee bit out but it may have been a weekly paper and missed the deadline the week before, so wasn't printed then........later in the post the date is given as January 5th. Now just for the sake of getting this post out there, as I see it as quite interesting, I am posting it today, lest I forget in a few days time.
BARBAROUS AND FATAL ATTACK OF THE RAILWAY NAVIES, ON STONEHAVEN.
Since the Railway works were located in the neighborhood of Stonehaven, they have been located in the town and principally from the Highlands. They are generally lodged by renting small rooms from 5 people. to 6s. a-week, buying in their own provisions. The price of provisions has advanced, as they have been everywhere, because of the time that they have been found among the provision merchants, and from that time forward they felt that if they owed those people a grudge; and also occasionally made slight assaults on the inhabitants.Mr Forbes, the principal contractor for works in the neighbourhood, has been employed by Mr Forbes at a reduced rate of wages, occasioned by the general depression of trade. It was now expected that the peace of the district would be secured, and for weeks there were no disturbance among the navies sufficient to excite them; but it now appears that they have still been harbouring their old grudge. In the forenoon of Wednesday last the people of the town were alarmed at the meeting of the railway labourers on the Square, and soon after two and three hundred navies had assembled, with bludgeons, knives, and pikes; and as they conversed together in Gaelic, the people of the town did not know their plans.
After consultation, a number of those who had no sticks, went to the woods at Dunnottar, where they cut branches from the trees, and about three o'clock the whole entered the Old Town in a body. They made their first attack on Mr Walker, a slater, who had previously helped to quell the outbreak, knocked him down with their bludgeons, and smashed a lot of windows in his master's (Mr Thompson's) house, who had also been obliged on a former occasion to resist the “navies.” Having beaten Walker, they left him, and proceeded to the Square. Mr. Weir, the Superintendent of Police, thought it hopeless to make any attempt to repel the attack, but watched the ringleaders, with a view to their apprehension.
About half-past five, the Highlanders marched through the town in order, shouting, and smashing every window where a light appeared. At the bottom of Ann Street they met Wm. Murray, a young man, who had just come from the country to see his friends, who they knocked down and left lying on the road. They then went to the Commercial Inn, where they smashed all the windows and tried to force the house, but were unable. They next attacked the Mill Inn, broke several windows, and attempted to gain admission, but Mr Melvin and the other inmates were unable to keep them at bay.
Passing from the Mill Inn, they met one of Mr Melvin's sons, who was maltreated, but though dreadfully bruised, was able to make his escape. The mob now went direct to Mr. Knox, the sadler's, another of the doomed houses, and here they broke open the door, smashed the windows, frames and all; Mr Knox, his sons, and the party who happened to be in the house, the consequences would have been the most fatal character.
It is hopeless to effect the entrance here, they are yet to parade the town, assaulting every person who can speak Gaelic ; and breaking, as before, every window in which there was light.About nine o'clock the Highlanders dispersed, and there was quietness for the night. The unfortunate man, Murray, was already found lying in a state of insensibility by a girl who was passing, and Mr Milne's in the Old Town, he found that his back was broken, and his skull was broken .
He was only able to say “I am murdered, and the navies have done it,” when he died.John Hobb, who was also struck in the street, was dangerously bruised, but is recovering.
Altogether, about twenty people who were maltreated, and for anything the mob cared, were in some instances left for dead in the streets; but they are now out of danger. Throughout the town, the cries of murder were heart-rending, and the scene appears to have been one that can scarcely be described; indeed, such was the state of the town, that it was safe to leave his house, and consequently no official steps could be taken by the local authorities.
Early on Thursday a special meeting of the Justices of the Peace was held, when it was resolved to send the expressions for the detachment of the military to Aberdeen, and Captain Barclay and Mr Graham Monro were charged with the commission.
On Thursday evening twenty soldiers of the 93rd Highlanders , under the command of Capt. Leith Hay, arrived in Stonehaven, and since then, there has been no further disturbance.Eleven of the ringleaders have been apprehended, and will speedily be brought to trial.
The line about Gaelic I have highlighted I assume is an editing error and should read assaulting every person who can't speak Gaelic.
Further to my pint about the lack of Irish in this incident I go on to the appearance of some of the men in court on March 11th, again the date it actually appeared in the Aberdeen Journal was April 12th 1848, such was the slow methods of getting the news out in those days.
Tuesday, March 11.The Court was opened this day at a quarter to ten o'clock and proceeded to the trial of the following prisoners.
MOBBING, RIOTING, AND MURDER.
The diet was first called against Donald Davidson , William M'Donald , John M'Kinnon , Donald M'Kenzie , and Colin Munro , who stood charged with the crimes of mobbing, rioting, malicious mischief, assault and murder. The indictment set forth that the prisoners had, on the 5th of January last, at Stonehaven, formed part of a mob, or great number of riotous and evil-disposed persons, being armed, all, or in part, with pickshafts, sticks, and stones, or other weapons and missiles, wickedly and feloniously assembled in a riotous, violent, and tumultuous manner, for the unlawful purpose of destroying property and life.M'Kenzie didn't answer to the charge, and was outlawed.
I'm butting in for a bit to highlight more evidence that this was not Irishmen, but Scots' not one Irish name amongst the accused men. The account continues......
Christian or Elizabeth Thain - Identified Davidson and Munro as leaders of the mob on its return from the shore, about four o'clock. Went to New Town a quarter before five, and saw the striking navies William Gordon. Saw the windows in Knox's house broken. Saw the mob breaking them. Knew [Brebner's] shop. Saw William Murray standing on the pavement there with John Carnegie. Witness saw Carnegie struck with a walking-stick. Heard William Murray cry at that moment “Run Carnegie;” and heard Murray then say to the mob, “Ah! fie! ye Highland butchers. ” Donald Davidson then came and swore at Murray, and struck him with a stick. The blow was a very serious one. It knocked Murray down. Colin Munro shoved Murray down when he was trying to rise, but he had no stick. Witness said to Davidson, when she saw him strike Murray, “Good God! Donald Davidson, I'll tell Jamie Reid the nicht. ” Davidson then ran away up the street. Colin Munro went away too. Witness then lifted up William Murray. He complained of his head. He was able to walk part of the way to Robert Milne's. He leant on witness's arm. While on the way Murray said to witness, “You know the man who struck me and ran away.” It was Donald Davidson. Witness heard Eliza Cowle, who met them, speak to Murray, who, “I've been killed by the navies.” It was darkening at this time. Witness identified Davidson and Munro, but not certain as Donald M'Kenzie.
The prisoners' declarations were then read. They denied that any breach of the peace was committed, but simply a slight disturbance. They denied that any organisation had engineered life and property had been formed; but admitted that they had arranged to make a demonstration, to show the town how powerful the Highlanders were.
Counsel for Davidson called a number of witnesses, to prove that he had taken no particular lead in the riot, though he had been present, and that he had been at home at the time Murray was killed.
More evidence that the Journal was a weekly paper becomes apparent in the next report from April 19th exactly 7 days after the report about the trial.
The Aberdeen Journal (April 19, 1848).
Wednesday, April 12 .
THE STONEHAVEN RIOTERS.
The Court met again this morning at 10 o'clock, when the four prisoners concerned in the Stonehaven riots, viz: - Donald Davidson, William M'Donald, John M'Kinnon , and Colin Munro , who were found guilty of the crimes of mobbing, rioting, malicious mischief, assault, and culpable homicide, were brought up to receive sentence. After an impressive admonition from Lord Moncrieff, Lord Cockburn sentenced Munro , to 1 Kat imprisonment , M'Kinnon and M'Donald , to 18 months' imprisonment each, and Davidson , who had proved to be more culpable than the others, to seven years' transportation.
So what exactly caused the Navvies to riot? Well in the book, History of Everyday Life in Scotland, 1800 to 1900 I found the simple answer- greed. Not the rioters, but the shopkeepers of Stonehave, who apparently increased their prices to take advantage of the outside workforce.
Another book, Fishermen, Randies and Fraudsters: Crime in the 19th Century Aberdeen and the North East, sheds more light on the undercurrent cause, and absolves some of the blame away from the shopkeepers blaming high prices in general all over Europe.
I also uncovered a possible reason the headline falsely accuses this riot on Irish Navvies, although I do think there may have been some involved, but not in the roles of ringleaders. The second book I mentioned tells us that "The Highlander" had "abandoned their tradition work wear in favour of the more flash Irish Navvies.

Maggie’s Truth
First series … Second series
*********************
Waking up slowly, his eyes dry, lips cracked, muscles aching, bruises tender, he found himself alone, staring at his weapon across the bed, sitting quietly on Maggie’s bedside table.
He had last seen his weapon before he was taken, safely tucked away in the closet, under lock, key and code. The night before, day before, whenever before, Maggie had helped him upstairs, gotten him into soft t-shirt, softer flannel, cradled in mattress and feathered down before kissing him, telling him she’d be back just as soon as she checked on the others. He’d been asleep in seconds, comforted more than he would ever admit out loud that Mulder and Scully were downstairs somewhere, available for a fight if the necessity arose. Now, however, he was awake and staring down the barrel of a gun Maggie had felt the need to place beside her in the night.
Not beside him but her.
If he wanted to, he could analyze that, debate whether it was next to her for fear he’d shoot her if she woke him up from sleep with a hand on his arm or a mumbled word, send him spiraling back to black plastic bag over head, wooden bat to back, cement meeting skull or if it was next to her because she would use it to defend him if and when another decided to invade her quiet life, her fiercely loved family.
Or he could stand, move, shower, eat, drink, ignore.
Instead he asked her quietly, when she walked back in a few moments later, holding a cup of steaming tea, “do you know how to use it?”
Setting tea beside gun, comfort and fear hand in hand on polished oak, “I do but since Bill died, I haven’t practiced.”
“We’ll do that soon but then I’d prefer to sleep with the gun in the drawer, my side or yours, doesn’t matter.” Moving closer, Maggie examined a cut, studied a still darkening bruise, laced her fingers against the back of his neck, while his gaze moved from tilted neck to warmer eyes, taking in all features between, “Maggie.”
She could see him ignoring all pain, not flinching at her touch against his already aching bones, “Walter.”
It was on the tip of his tongue, the words waiting to have life breathed in them, to cross the gap, change the world, alter the universe, but they remained quiet, knowing there was something he had to do before anything could happen, “should we go wake up the kids and have some breakfast?”
She felt it in the air between them and liking the unspoken for the moment, surrounded by it, she took his hand, “it’s actually time for dinner and Fox will love that you called them ‘the kids’.”
Holding out a hand to her, “help me up?”
“Of course.”
&&&&&&&&&&&
Scully woke to find Mulder’s hand splayed across her belly, tapping gently on her skin, and smiling, she turned her head to find him with his eyes closed but a small smile on his face, “are you Morse coding ‘I love you’?”
The happy grin grew larger, “I love that you know that.”
“Is it for the kid or me?”
“Yes.”
“Well, I love you back but he’s not going to answer for a little while. Morse code doesn’t kick in until the third trimester.” Scully kissed his nose then slid from the bed, “come on, let’s go find some breakfast.”
Mulder corrected her as he followed, “dinner. It’s after 9.”
“Same day?”
“Who the hell knows.”
Heading to the kitchen, Mulder stopped dead in his tracks and Scully, being short and still waking up, ran directly into him, knocking her nose into his back and her hard lump of belly into his butt. “Hey.”
Mulder whispered over his shoulder, “your mom and Skinner are making out by the kitchen counter. Don’t look! Don’t look!”
“Mulder …” Skinner’s voice carried to Scully’s still hidden ears, “we are not making out. I am drinking a cup of tea and Maggie is upstairs looking for her slippers.”
“You could have been making out and one day probably will be making out and I just want to prepare.”
Scully smacked his arm as she rubbed her nose, her voice muffled, “why don’t you prepare next time when I’m not behind you. I smashed my face.”
Turning, he pulled her forward, kissing the top of her head before drifting down to hold her hand, “sorry. Didn’t mean to squish you.”
“I’ll forgive you.”
“Thanks.”
Skinner, accepting their insanity long before this, didn’t even flinch, “anyone hungry? We were about to wake you up to help us solve the hot button debate of hot dogs or macaroni and cheese.”
Scully, finally seeing his face, gravitated towards him, doctor hands reaching for injured flesh, fingers tilting his head for a better look at multiple cuts and egg-sized lumps, “how did you sleep? Do you need anything for pain? Any nightmares?”
Mulder came over, removing her still probing hands but waiting for the answers, staring intently until Skinner finally responded, the back of his mind amusingly contemplating the rest of his life with Doctor Cold Fingers and Spooky Mulder while he told them, “I slept okay but not great. I took two Tylenol before I came downstairs and as for nightmares, nothing I can’t handle. Now, leave it alone for awhile, okay?”
Said with more love than irritation, Scully gave him a smile, “I vote Mac and Cheese and how many boxes should I make?”
Maggie, slippers now securely on feet, walked soundlessly into the kitchen, “at least four.”
“Are Frohike and company gone?”
“Yeah. They folded their blankets and left me a note saying thank you and asked to have a security meeting with me at my earliest possibly convenience.” Handing the paper to Mulder as she walked by, “why do I need to have a security meeting with Melvin?”
The rest of them in instant agreement that some cameras, better locks and maybe a bullet proof bubble over the house were fine, upstanding ideas, Scully spoke first, “because the world isn’t the nicest of places and for better or worse, you are now unequivocally associated with three individuals who seem to attract an awful lot of unpleasantness.”
“I don’t want to be a prisoner in my own home, Dana.”
“Maggie,” Mulder reached out to her, holding her arm lightly, “the boys are the best at what they do. You’ll never even know your house is safer than Fort Knox, I promise. The only things you will see are three or four sensors in unobtrusive corners, if you look hard.”
She looked like she wanted to believe him but doubt remained, however slight, a sigh of resignation coming out after a few moments, knowing she couldn’t and probably shouldn’t fight the combined efforts of the three of them, “I’ll talk with them but no guarantees right now.”
Walter relaxed slightly, his muscles tight for too long during the last three minutes, “that’s all we ask.”
&&&&&&&&&&&
It was while Scully dried and Skinner washed, having insisted that he needed to move to keep his muscles loose, “Scully? May I ask you something?”
“Yes, Walter, you may ask me something.”
Feeling an oddly paternal need to flick water on her, he refrained, “what would your honest reaction be if I asked your mother to marry me?”
To be fair, the bowl in her hand was very slippery, the metal smooth, the fingers forgetful of how to grip. It clattered to the ground, Scully doing her half-second behind best to catch it and the thing, instead of being captured, flew across the room as knuckle hit metal, metal hit floor, floor unforgiving, linoleum slick.
Both watched the bowl finally come to a halt in the hall, the clanging echoing a moment longer, before Skinner looked down at his agent, “that tells me a lot.”
Retrieving the bowl in silence, she came back to the sink, Walter unmoving but curious as she picked up her dishtowel once again before, “that doesn’t count in my answer. You dropped a bomb, I’m allowed to have butter fingers for a few seconds during processing.”
He understood, knowing not to judge on first reaction, “but now that you have your bowl firmly in hand, what do you think?”
“I think … that … it doesn’t really matter what I think but since I know that’s not the answer you want, I guess … well …” setting bowl on counter instead of flinging it to the floor as she had a minute ago, “dad’s been gone for six years and I think he’d want her to be happy. She smiles at you like she used to at him and that … that’s probably the best thing I’ve seen since he died and it makes me happy to know you want to make her smile like that for the rest of your lives.” Feeling the need to apologize for the ramble, she crossed her arms and turned towards him, giving him that eyebrow Mulder feared and he got a kick out of, “are you going to make her smile like that forever?”
“I’m going to try my best.”
Rocking back and forth on her heels a few times, she gave him a grin, “then I won’t be calling you ‘dad’ but there’s a really good chance Mulder will so prepare yourself.”
“I will.”
Uncrossing arms, she wrapped one around his waist in a half-hug, then pointed towards the dishes still waiting to be washed, “you better get those done, Walter, or she won’t be smiling anymore.”

Lee Smith, TE, BUF: Knee — Questionable Impact: Dawson Knox leads a sad Bills TE contingent that has combined for only 31 catches this season.
John Brown, WR, BUF: Ankle — OUT/IR Impact: He’s eligible to come off IR and has returned to practice but is not yet ready to play.
Melvin Gordon III, RB, DEN: Shoulder — Questionable Impact: Expected to play and will likely split the workload fairly evenly with …
Phillip Lindsay, RB, DEN: Hip — Questionable Impact: … a banged-up Lindsay, whom everybody expects to suit up on Saturday.
Brandon McManus, K, DEN: Illness — OUT/IR Impact: McManus (reserve/COVID-19 list) might have been eligible to play on Sunday, but with the earlier-than-normal action, Taylor Russolino will handle the kicking duties in Denver.
Christian McCaffrey, RB, CAR: Thigh — Doubtful Impact: Déjà vu? Mike Davis will start in what should be a pretty good matchup for his fantasy value.
Curtis Samuel, WR, CAR: Hamstring — Questionable Impact: DJ Moore returns from the reserve/COVID-19 list just in time.
Tre Boston, S, CAR: Hamstring — Questionable
Malik Taylor, WR, GB: Hamstring — Questionable Impact: Marquez Valdes-Scantling is coming off a six-catch Week 14. Allen Lazard remains limited in practice.
Jace Sternberger, TE, GB: Concussion — OUT Impact: Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis become a two-headed TE option, rather than Green Bay’s typical “Cerberus” approach to the position.
Official Saturday inactives should be reported approximately 90 minutes before the scheduled kickoff time of each individual contest.

NICAP Special Bulletin, November, 1958

Hoo boy. This was a long one.
Transcribed below:
NEW WAVE OF UFO SIGHTINGS CRACKS CENSORSHIP WALL
A Sudden increase in UFO sightings, here and abroad, is new under intensive investigation by AF intelligence. As we go to press, a new Baltimore UFO case has just lead to the revelation of a dramatic AF sighting withheld for three years.
The Baltimore sighting, new being investigated by AF scientists as well as Intelligence teams, occurred early on Oct. 27, near Lock Raven Reservoir. About midnight, Phillip Small and Alvin Cohen, Baltimore residents, sighted an enormous "egg-shaped" object hovering above a bridge. They estimated its length to be at least 100 feet. As they neared toe bridge, they reported, their car lights went out, then their engine stopped.
As the men climbed out, they felt an intense heat from the object. They watched it 45 seconds, then it shot straight up, with "a thunderous noise."  They notified Baltimore County police, who immediately called the AF Office of Special Investigation. Because of the reported electrical interference ,and a burned area on Cohen's face, Air Research and Development experts were also called in. This ARDC development was uncovered by NICAP Special Adviser Lou Corbin, who is News Director of Station WFBR. Checking with nearby Andrews AF Base, Corbin also was given the long-withheld 1955 UFO case by a veteran AF pilot who believes the facts should be told. (Though his name and rank are known to NICAP, we have promised Adviser Corbin not to disclose the officer's identity.)In 1955, stated this AF pilot, while flying in Alabama, he and five competent witnesses chased a UFO similar to the one seen at Baltimore. Amon the witnesses as a Lockheed Aircraft representative and a jet engineering expert. All five drew up reports agreeing they hand pursued a solid object of "considerable size" which they believed was intelligently controlled.
"Don't let anyone fool you," the officer told Corbin. "That object did not come from earth. The case has never been solved by the Air Force. And I've every reason to believe it was the same kind as in the Baltimore case.
"Though Mr. Cohen has not admitted taking a radiation-exposure test, NCIAP has reason to believe the AF has arranged such a test.
The heating effects described in the Baltimore Oct. 27 case lend special interest to an earlier report just sent us from South America, which follows.
UNCONFIRMED NEWSCASTS LINK UFO WITH MOON ROCKET
In at least two radio newscasts, an unidentified flying object was reported as hovering over Cape Canaveral just before the ill-fated moon rocket "Pioneer" was launched on Oct. 10. In one broadcast, reported by several NICAP members in Washington, the announcer was quoted as saying "maybe the moon rocket will have company." A similar broadcast was reported by members in the Baltimore area.
NICAP is till checking, though it has found no confirmation of the broadcast reports. If other members heard such newscasts, or read similar news reports, please write us. It is important to prove these reports true or false. There are increasing rumors that UFOs have destroyed some of our rockets, or forced them off course. If such claims have any foundation, this will vitally affect the UFO situation. If they are false, they should be vigorously denied to prevent new ridicule of UFO investigations.
PILOT FEELS INTENSE HEAT FROM HOVERING UFOA bright silvery UFO, hovering over Uruguay on May 5, 1958, created such intense heat in the cabin of a plane that the pilot was forced to open the windows and door, and remove his jacket.
Carlos Alejo Rodriguez, flying his Piper aircraft from San Carlos to Montevideo, saw the brilliant object approach on an easterly course and apparently stop, wobbling slightly. Rodriguez, an experienced pilot and parachute instructor, closed to within 800 yards and saw a metallic-appearing "top-shaped" object, its form symmetrical above and below. Then, as the object took off at fantastic speed south toward the sea, intense heat filled the cabin of the plane. A slight vapor-like trail was noted though both the UFO and the plane were only at about 3000 feet altitude. A team of investigators for C.I.O.V.I. UFO group in Uruguay, who submitted this report to NICAP, said that Rodriguez had always been skeptical about UFOs. After this experience, however, he reported the incident to the Director of Aeronautics and Air Force authorities. Later he described it publicly over the radio.
Rodriguez said that the head from the object caused him to "sweat profusely." The outside temperature was only about 77° F. He estimated that the object, which was hovering in the vicinity of a Naval Air Base was about 50-60 feet in diameter.
The current sighting increase coincides with Mars' 1958 approach to Earth, though it does not prove a definite connection. Beginning with '48, every Mars opposition (at 26-month intervals) has been accompanied by increased UFO sightings, usually noted two or more months before and after the opposition. This time, the first spurt of sightings, in August, came in our northeast states, with a later concentration in the midwest. (Mars will be closest in early November.) Here is a digest of several sightings during the present "flap".
Aug. 11, Chautauqua Lake, N.Y. Between 9:15 and 10:30 pm Dr. Fred C. Fair, a retired professor of engineering, observed several inexplicable lights in the sky. On two occasions he saw groups of lights in roughly geometrical patterns. In the last of these sightings, Dr. Fair noted a white light rapidly moving north. Through a transit telescope the object appeared as five white lights spaced "as though on circumference of an oval." A red light was visible above and slightly to the rear of the white lights. Dr. Fair followed the object with the telescope until it disappeared behind some nearby trees.
Aug. 24, Brook, Ind. Theater manager Henry Hermansen and his cashier, Mrs. Ethel Tinder, at about 6:45 pm saw a brightly-lighted object "like a pie plate sailing through the air on its rim." It moved "very fast" toward the NE, then suddenly changed direction and disappeared toward the SE. Mr. Hermansen's description of the object recalls the 1947 reports which gave rise to the name "flying saucer."
Sept. 8; Omaha, Nebr. A NICAP member who is an Air Force Reserve officer has reported that he and several high-ranking officers sighted a huge "pencil-shaped" UFO in the western sky at 6:40 pm. They watched it for about 20 minutes. More details are expected. Observers in California next day reported a long, rocket-like object with an orange flame-tail.
Sept. 21; Sheffield Lake, Ohio. A brilliant light at 3:00 am attracted Mrs. Wm. Fitzgerald and her son Johnto their windows. From separate rooms they watched a disc-shaped object descend, with a slight side-to-side oscillation, low over a neighbor's lot. The object, flat and circular with a dome in the center, was illuminated by glowing gas which came out of "tubes" on one edge. Both witnesses heard a humming and whirring noise. After maneuvering around above the lot, the object ascended vertically.
We are indebted to Robert J. Durant, NICAP member in Lorain, Ohio, for his report of the incident.
Oct. 3; Stephensberg, Ky. Four Hardin County residents - Mrs. Harvey DeVore, Miss Ella Sutzer, Mr. Leslie Sutzer, and Mr. Alvin Duncan - reported seeing a UFO at about 6 am in a field 500 yards away. It was silvery, and had stubby protrusions which were seen to move. As Mr. Sutzer approached, the object took off, moved and hovered about 4 feet off the ground, then flew away. In the air, it appeared cone-shaped. It made no sound. Where the object had touched, the grass was said to be mashed, with markings visible. Fort Knox said that it knew of no military equipment in the area. The U.S. Weather Bureau could not account for the object.
Oct. 8; Newark, Ohio. For the second time in less than a month, formations of odd lights maneuvering over Newark were reported by police officers H. E. Sherburn and T. H. Francis. In mid-September, they reported similar white, red, and green lights hovering and performing erratically over the city. Sherburn, an Air Force veteran, said the lights were arranged in a crescent. (See the Aug. 11 report by Dr. Fair.) Sherburn was "certain" the lights were not on conventional aircraft.
Oct. 12; Aurora Ill. Between 9:50 and 10:15 pm DuPage County police officers saw brightly-lighted golden UFOs from several viewpoints in the Aurora area. Shortly thereafter, a patrol car in Lisle spotted the objects moving southeast over DuPage County. The patrol-men said the objects were well-lighted and had "spotlights" turned toward the ground. Other patrol cars confirmed the report. At 10:10 pm the Aurora  police called the sheriff's office to report seeing similar objects headed southeast over Batavia. DuPage County Deputy Sheriff Jack Adams said he saw three objects near Batavia, one brighter than the others. Officials at O'Hare AFB were then notified, and jets apparently in pursuit, were heard shortly afterward. When questioned by the Aurora Beacon-News O'Hare officials refused comment.
Oct. 14; Aurora, Ill. For three consecutive nights, residents in Aurora, Wheaton, and Glen Ellyn watched brilliantly lighted objects maneuvering through the skies. Many witnesses, including police officers, saw four "incredibly bright" objects over Aurora between 8:39 and 8:45 pm. The objects then took off eastward over DuPage county in perfect formation. As the UFOs moved, their color changed from intense white to a dazzling gold.
DuPage County Deputy Louis Parreant attempted to follow one of the objects in a squad car near Downers Grove, but it soon left him behind. Another deputy, Melvin Lowe, said he saw one of the UFOs rise straight up and vanish after hovering about 1000 feet off the ground. (Allan Etzler, a former Army radar operator for guided missiles, recently told NICAP investigators that on Oct. 10 he had seen a large round glowing object hover about 60 feet over a field in Laytonsville Md. He said the watched it about 8-10 seconds when it suddenly shot straight up.)
NICAP ANNOUNCES NEW PROGRAMA new plan to speed of UFO investigations, through local committees of scientists, engineers, pilots and other experts, is now being set up by NICAP. With such committees established throughout the U.S. and all countries outside the Iron Curtain, a mass of scientifically evaluated headquarters for release to our members and Congress.
The new system, suggested by Associate Editor Richard H. Hall, will not only offset the scarcity of UFO reports in the press, but should make possible valid conclusions about several points including:
Any correlation with A-bomb tests.
Sighting cycles linked with Mars or Venus approaches to the earth.
Specific areas apparently under special UFO observation.
Any correlation with launchings of satellites, moon probes or other space rockets.
The question of possible UFO links with certain aircraft accidents and disappearances.
Reports of strange radio signals, suggested as linked with space craft.
Reports of UFO interference with radio, television, engine ignitions and other electrical systems.
Here is how the plan will work. Let's say a UFO sighting occurs near City A, in the midwest. The report may be published or broadcast locally, with no national pickup. The chairman of the local NICAP subcommittee will arrange for interviews (taped if possible) with key witnesses. If a photo was taken, the subcommittee will ask to examine the negative. Information will be collected on the time, weather, lighting conditions, UFO maneuvers, other aircraft involved (as in a jet chase) etc.
The group's astronomer will see if there is any astronomical answer, and its meterologist will check such "weather answers" as temperature inversions or sundogs. A subcommittee pilot, or other aviation expert, will check possible mistaken identification of a plane or balloon. If no conventional answer is found, the group will evaluate the evidence, reach a conclusion if possible, and forward a report to NICAP.
Where there is no conclusion, or there are unsettled questions, final evaluation will be made by NICAP Special Advisers or Board Members or both. Final conclusions and key points will then be given to the membership and appropriate groups in Congress. In press releases, the full credit will be given to the subcommittees; also, local publicity by subcommittees will be recommended, via newspapers and broadcasts.
This system requires that highly trained NCIAP members volunteer their services -- men and women expert in astronomy, photography, aviation (including aviation medicine), electronics, rocketry, meterology etc. Fortunately, NCIAP has members in all these fields, also analysis specialists, researchers, detectives and former Intelligence men. Some have already volunteered, and probably many others, both American and foreign, will help if the working time involved is not too great.
Where enough specially trained members are not available, subcommittees may secure the help of non-member experts interested in the UFO problem. A subcommittee member can keep such service confidential, though the use of the experts' names will be of value when the reports are made public. Special subcommittees may analyze individual problems, such as propulsion methods, artificial gravity and the "angels hair" reports. The system may be broadened to cover non-technical questions such as religious aspects, general publicity, approaches to Congress, etc., in which members without technical training could participate.
Meantime, all NICAP members can help by reporting sightings and other technical UFO information to local subcommittees. (Names, addresses, to be listed.) The Washington, D.C. subcommittee is already partly formed, and we are working to start others quickly. Whether you live in the U.S. or abroad, if you have special training, as indicated, we hope you will help form a local subcommittee. The only other provision is that you accept NICAP's policy of factual approach. If you volunteer, please list your special qualifications and whether you have access to a laboratory or other analysis equipment. We will be glad to have suggestions from all members regarding this new plan.
---------
Note: The Chicago Daily News said on October 14th that Air Force B-47 jet bombers in a 3:00 am SAC exercise were responsible for at least one "flying saucer" report in Chicago. No explanation was offered for the sightings of the previous nights.
Oct. 14; Indiana. Residents in south-central Indiana reported sighting UFOs in pre-dawn hours. Police discussed the reports on police radio and confirmed sightings in Columbus, Franklin, Greensburg, Greenwood, and Indianapolis.
Oct. 15; Southeast U.S. The Civil Aeronautics Administration control office in Atlanta, Ga., asked if the AF to investigate a "strange flying object" seen over several southeaster states. the CAA said airline pilots had seen the object, one estimating its altitude at 65,000 feet. Citizens in North and South Carolina, and other states, said the object was very large and appeared triangular in shape.
Early on the morning of Sept. 29, 1958, a UFO sighting was officially reported at the Army's Nike missile base, dear Derwood, Md. Later, news and radio reports from Maryland and other states indicated that a firey object seen by hundreds at the same time was a disintegrating meteor. On-the-spot investigations by  a NICAP team confirm this. But because of the contradictory official answers given the press - one of them known to be false at the time, as NICAP can prove - a detailed account will be given. The Nike story, kept quiet for a week, broke on Oct. 6 in the Jersey Journal, which ran an interview with Pvt. Jerome Scanlon, one of the Nike base witnesses. According to the news story, Scanlon and a Sgt. Riney Farris had seen a "cigar-shaped craft" land and take off near the base. A scorched strip a half-mile long was said to have been found where the object landed.
An Associated Press query led to an Army news release at Ft. Meade, Md., confirming the two soldiers' report and adding that 12 investigatiors (later revealed as AF) had quizzed them and searched the area.
A NICAP team - Assoc. Ed. Richard Hall and Washington members Richard Lechaux and Samuel Coe - made three trips to Derwood, interviewed Sgt. Farris, two other Army witnesses, the Nike duty officer, and area citizens. The team also mapped and photographed the area. No scorched area or signs or a landing were found, though the rough, hilly terrain prevented a complete search.
In addition, NY member Ted Bloecher (a CSI officers) reached Pvt. Scanlon, on leave at Jersey City, quizzed him for 45 minutes. Scanlon had not seen the object take off, or even land, but merely saw it pass behind trees. This tallied with Sgt. Farris' statement to NICAP; he had merely seen the object flash overhead. But it added a puzzle: why had the Ft. Meade news release gone along with the landing and take-off story?
Soon after, a new puzzle was added by NICAP Adviser Lou Corbin, radio news director at Baltimore, in an exclusive interview with Lt. Richard Platt, Nike base duty officer who also saw the fiery object. Platt did not see a landing, but insisted he saw a strange glow where the object was supposed to have landed. He said he watched it 45 minutes, saw the pulsating glow alternate from greenish white to orange. (the AF later said a helicopter search found no trace of such an object's presence.) Reports from astronomers and others in states as far as Ohio and Kentucky, and an analysis by NICAP Adviser Jas. C. Bartlett, Jr., strongly backed the meteor answer. But instead of using this answer, the AF hastily rushed out a typical debunking story, claiming solution of over 98% of UFO sightings. (This may have been caused by uneasiness over the sightings increase and the possible Mars link.)
Immediately afterward, the AF put out a news story "solving" the Nike report. The Nike men, it said, had been misled by the reflection of arc-welders' torches as Potomac Electric Power Co. (PEPCO) men worked on nearby high-tension lines. A NICAP check proved this untrue, and obviously known to be false when released. At PEPCO, a spokesman told NICAP this was impossible and the AF knew it. A Capt. Maxwell at Andrews Field, said the PEPCO official, had tried to establish this answer; he had been told that no PEPCO men worked at that hour (5:30 am) and none had been in the area. A NICAP call to Capt. Maxwell resulted in a prompt refusal to comment, because of Air Force Reg. 200-2.The PEPCO spokesman also told NICAP that Newsweek had called and had been given the facts. (Later, Newsweek cited an AF explaination that the Nike men had seen a 200-watt lamp on a distant barn; no mention was made of the false arc-welder answer. Lt. Platt, informed of the barn-lamp story, flatly said it was impossible.)
What Platt saw is unknown. One suggestion is that there was another object beside the meteor, or that a fragment of the meteor fell from the meteor and started a fire. Lt. Platt denies the glow as an ordinary flame. Regardless of this unexplained angle, the case is important. Again, the AF UFO policy is clearly revealed: hurried debunking of any news report, even to planting of a false answer - and, simultaneously, serious investigation by Intelligence teams, behind the scenes.
Reprint of Issue No. 1
In response to frequent requests, we have arranged to reprint Issue 1 of the UFO INVESTIGATOR. This contains 32 pages of still timely information, including several unexplained UFO cases: A CAA radar report of UFOs flying at 3600 mph., two important sightings by former Navy pilots, the Pan American Airways UFO incident of March, 1957, which the Civil Aeronautics Board says is still unsolved, and other authentic UFO reports. Issue NO. 1 also contains a flying saucer history installment, options by Board members, an 8-point cooperation plan offered the Air Force and full details of NCIAP's policy on "contact" claims. If you wish Issue No. 1, please send your check for $1.00 and it will be mailed postpaid in a 9 by 11 inch manila envelope. Also please indicate whether you are interested in ordering copies of Issues 2 and 3 (each containing 32 pages of important information). If there are enough requests, we shall reprint either issue or both, at the same price of $1.00 each.
MAJORITY BACKS NICAP
Though the ballots are still coming in, the votes received indicate that over 90% of our members back NCIAP's policies, as stated in the Aug.-Sept. issue.
Question 1. Should NICAP keep trying to end secrecy about UFOs? Yes, 98.9%.  Yes, 1.1%
Question 2. Do you think NICAP is a smokescreen, an AF cover-up? No, 99%. Yes, 1%
Question 3. Do you agree with NICAP's policy on contact stories? Yes. 89.14%. No, 10.86% Apparently, from comments on several ballots, some voting "no" believed NICAP meant to ignore all contact reports. This is not correct; NICAP is steadily collecting such reports and will evaluate them after its stated first goals are reached. (See discussion of p. 7, Aug.-Sept. issue.) Possibly the new NICAP committee system (which see) will expedite examination of contact claims.
Question 4. Do you vote for re-election of the Board of Governors until Oct. 1, 1959? Yes, 98.32%. No, 1.68%
Question 5. Will you do everything possible to promote NICAP, secure new members and end the financial crisis? Yes, 99.3%. No, .07%
We greatly appreciate our members' vote of confidence, also ballot suggestions indicating a majority desire for:
1. More UFO sighting reports.
2. Digest treatment of news items, to cover more subjects.
3. More discussion of possible UFO sources, motives, types of beings.

After a 10 minute report by NICAP's Director, the meeting will be thrown open for questions and answers and general discussion of the UFO problem and NCIAP's operations. JUSTICE DEPT. HUNTING
"Straith" Hoaxer
The State Dept. has informed NICAP that the Dept. of Justice is investigating the so-called "Straith Case," in which a hoax letter on State Dept. letterhead was written to Mr. George Adamski. NICAP believes it knows the identity of the hoaxer and has given the State Dept. another letter apparently written on the same typewriter and maliciously aimed at an officer of Civilian Saucer Intelligence, N.Y. Mr. Lonzo Dove, a NICAP member, also has loaned Government investigators several letters written to him on the same typewriter and signed by the supposed hoaxer, a man well known in UFO investigation.
The "Straith" letter, widely publicized by Adamski, implied State Dept. endorsement of his claims to contact with spacemen. NICAP has been given an official copy of a State Dept. letter sent Adamski by Acting Depty Ass't. Secretary Jameson Parker, which flatly denies Adamski's claims about the hoax document.
"As you have been told orally, this is a spurious letter," Secretary Parker wrote Adamski. "Neither is there an R.E. Straith connected with the Department of State nor is there any record of any person of that name having been an employee of the Department.
"Secretary Parker also said there never has been a "Cultural Exchange Committee" in the Department, as the "Straith" hoaxer claimed. Referring to the Department letterhead used by the hoaxer, Secretary Parker added:
"This stationery has the seal impressed at the time of manufacture, not at the time of mailing. That is, the seal is placed on blank paper, and any person who had access to supplies of this paper would be in a position to misappropriate it and to write an unauthorized letter such as the one in your possession."
Secretary Parker then officially cautioned Adamski not to keep on claiming the "Straith" letter was genuine:
"I should appreciate your informing all who inquire about this letter that is spurious, and request that you cease distributing copies of it."
If Adamski persists, legal action may be taken.
NICAP hopes the State or Justice Dept. will publicly expose the hoaxer and remove one of the troublemakers in UFO investigation. IF not, NICAP will do everything legally possible to reveal his identity.
FRY WITHHOLDS DATA ASKED FOR NICAP ANALYSIS
To date, Mr. Daniel Fry has failed to send the data requested by NICAP regarding a small round object Fry offered for analysis. No UFO link is claimed by Fry, nor does he reveal where he got it.
NICAP PROGRESS REPORT
Thanks to those members who quickly renewed, or who generously sent us contributions, the danger of suspending operations has been averted. We have tried to thank all of these members personally; if anyone was overlooked, please forgive the error.
Thus far, this life-saving help has been limited to about 9% of the members. However, we have not had time to hear from all areas, because of the slower third-class mail delivery of Issue 5. Not everyone can make donations, of course. But everyone can try to get us new members. We must have continued support, through renewals or new memberships every month, to operate on schedule. We urgently need more full-time office workers; though several Washington members have kindly volunteered to help in their spare time, our correspondence and editorial work are still accumulating.
Prompt help by 9% of NICAP's membership has kept us from disaster. If each of the others - or most of them - will get us one new member, our financial problem will be licked. Investigations, editing and other work will be speeded up, along with liaison with Congress and other important projects. More information will reach NICAP members; publications can be enlarged, or printed more frequently.
Please do all you can do promote NCIAP. Urge your public libraries to subscribe to NCIAP publications. Send us the names of interested friends. Send us the names of interested friends - or write us for membership blanks. Another helpful step is to ask your local broadcasting stations and newspapers to mention NICAP's work; many are glad to interview NICAP members.  You can write letters to editors, quoting key items from our publications, names of Board members and Advisers, and giving NICAP's address.
A new NICAP, operating at full speed, is bound to have a strong impact on Congress, press and public. We believe we can end the secrecy, given full membership backing. Please help us reach this goal.
CORRECTION OF MOSELEY STATEMENT
In his latest UFO publication, James W. Moseley quote NICAP's director as saying he had "fired" Mrs. R. H. Campbell and Mrs. Bessie M. Clark. As Associate Editor Richard Hall will testify, Mr. Moseley was told specifically that Mrs. Campbell had resigned and had planned to have Mrs. Clark assist her in other work. Mr. Moseley has been asked to retract this statement.
Mr. D. W. Opperman, editor, the Olympic Review, says he will gladly correct the NICAP membership statement he attributed to Mrs. Campbell, that we had 35,000 members. We wish this were true. She evidently said NICAP had about 3500 members, and the actual number is some 3200. We thank Mr. Opperman for the correction.
FOUR HUGE UFOS PACE FREIGHT TRAINA freight train southbound on the Monon Railroad in Clinton County, central Indiana, was paced by four glowing UFOs for over an hour early Friday October 3, 1958. All five of the crew saw the objects, which stayed with the train for 40 miles between Rossville and Kirklin. The objects, glowing white at high speeds and red-orange at lower speeds, dipped low over the train and maeuvered in formation.
Fireman Cecil Bridge, a former Air Force bomber crewman, and Engineer Harry Eckman first spotted a formation of 4 odd white lights crossing the tracks ahead of them at about 3:10 am. The lights turned down to about 200-300 feet, and traversed the full length of the train (about one-half mile.) The crew in the caboose, notified by the intercom, then saw the objects wheel east in formation and turn back to follow the train.
Conductor Ed Robinson at one point shone a powerful flashlight on the objects, which immediately flew away, returning a few minutes later. Finally, after maneuvering around the train for an hour and ten minutes, the UFOs moved off to the northeast and disappeared.
Robinson said the UFOs flew and tree-top level part of the time, and appeared to be about 40 feet in diameter and 8 to 10 feet thick. At times, they flew in a vertical position, and occasionally sped up approaching the caboose. No definite configuration could be discerned through the bright glow.
That night, on WTTV, Bridge and Robinson described the incident to Frank Edwards, NICAP Board Member in Indianapolis, who relayed it to NICAP. Brakeman Morris Ott and Flagman Paul Soshey also saw the objects and agreed with the descriptions given by other crew members.
About 50-60 miles west of the Monon Line, a New York Central Railroad engineer in the railroad yard near Danville, Illinois, reported seeing blinding blue-white objects in the eastern sky between 3:00 and 5:00 am that same morning.
REASONS FOR FIRST CLASS MAILING
Though it is considerably more expensive, we are sending this bulletin by first class mail. We hope this will make up for the unexpected delay, in some areas, of issue No. 5, which went third-class. Also, this should speed up organization of the new local subcommittees, and prompt news of the current sighting "flap" may help members interest other persons in joining NICAP. Even though we will have to go back to third-class mailing for the next issue (an approximate saving of $150 in postage, envelope, and stuffing costs) the interval will not be so great because of this special first class mailing.

5 moves we’re rooting for at the NFL trade deadline
Tumblr media
Free A.J. Green from the Bengals and let Melvin Gordon get a fresh start.
For years, the NFL’s trade deadline was just another day. A lack of in-season deals made the league’s wheeling-and-dealing cutoff date pale in comparison to the frenzy of action the NBA and MLB typically saw.
But teams have been more active than ever the past few seasons, and 2019 has seen a flurry of trade activity in the run-up to Oct. 29. The Rams traded Marcus Peters and brought in Jalen Ramsey. The Patriots addressed their impending loss of Josh Gordon by freeing Mohamed Sanu from the Falcons’ sinking ship. The Broncos dealt away their previous season’s leading wideout for the second straight year.
That won’t be all. Plenty of big names are on the trading block with teams skidding toward mediocrity (or worse), and wide open playoff races in both conferences should leave no shortage of buyers. Players like A.J. Green, Melvin Gordon, and Chris Harris are all entering the final year of their contracts on teams whose postseason hopes range from “pretty bad” to “haaaaaaaaa.” They could find new life with new homes — but where?
We’ve got some ideas.
The Bills liberate WR A.J. Green from the Bengals
Green is 31 years old, has yet to play in 2019 thanks to an ankle injury and, because he has never played an NFL game as anything other than a Bengal, has no idea how to celebrate a playoff victory. And he could be just the thing that makes the rest of the NFL world take Buffalo seriously.
Green, even at 80 percent of his peak performance, would be the best wideout to play in western New York since Andre Reed ruled Orchard Park (sorry, Eric Moulds fans). While the transition from Andy Dalton to Josh Allen may be a step down for the seven-time Pro Bowler, he’d be a boon for a Bills offense in desperate need of consistency in its passing game. Injuries have limited Green’s impact the past four years — he’s played 35 of a possible 55 games since 2016 — but his on-field impact in that span is still elite. He’s averaged 85 catches, 1,251 yards, and eight touchdowns per 16 games in those seasons.
He’d also play a major role in helping an inconsistent quarterback who still needs signal-boosting weapons. Allen has had his share of bad games in 2019, but he has improved slightly after a trying rookie season, going from awful to mediocre (at least in terms of pure passing numbers) in the process.
An upgraded cast of receiving talent has helped push his completion rate from 52.8 percent in 2018 to 62.4 percent this fall, and he’s also showcased improved accuracy. His on-target throw rate has gone from 63.1 to 66.1 percent. Though that last number ranks 32nd among qualified QBs, it’s still slightly higher than Dalton’s rate so far.
Adding Green would allow top targets Cole Beasley and John Brown to take on the complementary roles for which they’re better suited. He’d also take defensive pressure away from rookie tight end Dawson Knox, who looks like he could be a big piece of the team’s future moving forward. Though Buffalo may not be high on Green’s wish list, he’d have a chance to step right in and make a major impact for a team in dire need of a playmaker. — Christian D’Andrea
Get Kyler Murray some protection in the form of Trent Williams
I’m not sure if Trent Williams wants to go to a team that isn’t expected to make the playoffs this season, but the Cardinals certainly have a better chance at competing in the near future than Washington does. More importantly, they have a young, promising head coach-quarterback combo in Kliff Kingsbury and Kyler Murray.
We’ve already seen Murray improve this season, but that progress can easily be halted by an offensive line that simply isn’t holding up. Arizona has allowed Murray to be sacked 23 times this season, which puts him firmly in the top 10 of most sacked quarterbacks this season.
Murray is raw, but extremely active in the pocket. He needs some more protection so his rookie campaign isn’t derailed, and he’ll need help beyond this season. Williams has been named to the Pro Bowl for seven straight seasons and the left tackle clearly has a few good years left in him. I don’t know if he wants to spend them helping a young team become competitive, but if he’s open to it, then I think the deal makes perfect sense.
It would do a lot not just for the Cardinals offense, but for Murray’s confidence. And it’d free Williams from Washington. — James Brady
Give the Eagles some cornerback help by picking up Chris Harris Jr.
Philadelphia has been ravaged by injuries at the corner position pretty much all season. with Avonte Maddox, Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, and Sidney Jones all missing time. The Eagles signed back Orlando Scandrick to help out. That didn’t last long, as Scandrick was soon released and went all scorched earth on the way out.
The Eagles could use all the help they can get at cornerback. Philly’s defense is allowing 271 pass yards per game (27th in the NFL), and the problems in the secondary are evident. This clip from their blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys sums up the unit in a nutshell:
Amari Cooper sends Rasul Douglas to another world with his patented sluggo. my god, amari pic.twitter.com/5lNrOmoiTT
— Austin Gayle (@PFF_AustinGayle) October 21, 2019
The Eagles need lockdown corner and already missed out on Jalen Ramsey. So how about Chris Harris Jr. from Denver? The four-time Pro Bowl corner has 19 total tackles and an interception so far this season, and has only allowed one touchdown. He’s also versatile and can play either outside or as a slot corner.
The Broncos aren’t going anywhere this season and Harris will be a free agent in 2020. They could at least get something for him from Philadelphia, which desperately needs a boost in the secondary to compete for the NFC East title, even if it’s only for the rest of the season. — Morgan Moriarty
Let Melvin Gordon start fresh with the Bears
This has not been a banner year for Melvin Gordon. First, he decided to hold out in hopes of receiving a lucrative new contract. When he and the Chargers didn’t make any progress in negotiations, Gordon requested a trade. When that didn’t materialize, Gordon ended his two-month absence. With his return, Gordon wanted to prove his worth to the Chargers (or another team) in the final year of his contract.
Yet, ever since Gordon entered the lineup in Week 5, he’s looked far removed from his Pro Bowl season a year ago. In three games, Gordon has gained just 81 yards on 36 attempts. The Chargers are 0-3 in that span, and the offense has been decidedly better with Austin Ekeler as the main back. You could even argue that the Chargers going away from Ekeler in favor of Gordon is what cost them a win against the Titans.
Gordon has admitted he wouldn’t miss training camp again, but it’s already tough enough for running backs to get paid, and it’s not like he forgot how to play football during his holdout. At this point, though, a new start might be his best chance to boost his confidence and show he still deserves top money.
The Bears would be an ideal landing spot. Their running game has been sluggish all season, ranking near the bottom of the league in rushing yards (420), yards per carry (3.4), and rushing touchdowns (two).
Bringing Gordon into the fold would take less pressure off David Montgomery and allow the rookie to work as part of a 1-2 running back punch. Gordon’s presence could also let speedy Tarik Cohen be more effective in his role as a change-of-pace back and receiving weapon.
Most importantly, Gordon would be a security blanket for the struggling Mitchell Trubisky. The Bears’ third-year quarterback needs all the help he can get, whether that’s a steady ground game or another target he can dump the ball off to. Gordon can do both. He has totaled at least 400 receiving yards for three straight seasons, and his only touchdown so far this year has come through the air.
Chicago needs just a little more production from its offense to get back into playoff contention. Then, it can let the defense do the rest. — Sarah Hardy
Von Miller could fill the Terrell Suggs-sized hole in Baltimore
Three years ago, Von Miller recorded 2.5 sacks in the AFC Championship Game to help lead the Broncos to a 20-18 win over the Patriots. Two weeks later, he had another 2.5 sacks in a 24-10 win over the Panthers that earned him Super Bowl MVP honors.
That’s the last time Miller played in the postseason.
The Denver offense has dragged down the defense for a few years now, and there’s still more roster repair left to do. Miller is 30 and wasting quality pass-rushing seasons while the Broncos struggle to figure out a way to score points.
If a team is willing to step up and offer the Broncos a lot for Miller, Denver could get pieces to speed along that rebuild. Even better, it could dodge the final two years of the pricy six-year, $114.1 million extension Miller signed in 2016.
Baltimore should be the team to step up to the plate. The Ravens only have 12 sacks through the first seven games of the season. Terrell Suggs, who is somehow still going strong in his 17th NFL season, has five sacks for the Cardinals — one more than any player on the Ravens.
The team isn’t afraid to make a splash. The Ravens reportedly made a significant offer to acquire Jalen Ramsey, but came up short. They have the draft capital to acquire Miller and a willingness to push their chips to the center of the table with a lead in the AFC North.
The tricky part would be fitting Miller’s contract under the salary cap for the remainder of the 2019 season. The Ravens have room in 2020, but they’d have to make some moves to clear space for Miller. If Baltimore can make it work, it’d be great to see Miller back on a team with a chance at winning something. — Adam Stites

Italian Wrecking Ball NAGA Emerges With “Worm”
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
We’ve got a double-whammy for you today!   Celebrated Naples threesome NAGA are back with an exclusive track and are opening up for their first interview in a while.   If you’re new to the music of Lorenzo De Stefano (vocals/guitar), Emanuele Schember (bass), Dario Graziano (drums), I can’t think of a better description than their own: “…distortion, heaviness and nihilism to your ears.   No concept, no bullshits, no happiness, just sound anger and frustration to exorcize and reflect the greyness and despair of contemporary world.”   Now that’s something I can really raise my horns to.
Naga’s second album, ‘Inanimate’ (2016), is absolutely crushing (I raved about it in our quarterly ’Doom Around The World’).   Since its digital release, the band has been picked up by Everlasting Spew Records, which is releasing Inanimate on CD on March 25th (you can order it here).   For this special edition, NAGA has recorded a new single, which Doomed & Stoned is premiering today.
“Worm” opens with sparse textures.   A dissonant theme is introduced in single string plucks.   Soon, this erupts into a storm of cacophony.   The vocals are ravings of madness.   The dense atmosphere is one of opaque gloom, with sheets of rain pouring down from blackened, low-hanging clouds.   NAGA has orchestrated a mood of perfect doom, something that echoes entirely throughout Inanimate.
Give ear…

An Interview with NAGA Frontman Lorenzo De Stefano
By Mari Knox
Doomed & Stoned Italy)
You started playing music together almost 15 years ago, in the beginning with a band called KTER (Kill The Easter Rabbit) and later, in 2013, you have founded Naga.   A long evolution that brought you good feedback since the debut album 'Hēn’ (2014).   Your musical path is clearly the result of a strong partnership, something that’s hard to find. What does unite you? And what pushed you to start a band?
Basically, we are friends, kind of brothers, so it was completely natural to stick together and start up a band. We just share the same idea of music and life in general.  We met in Lyceum and, at that time, in Naples it was not that easy to find someone to share the same idea of music with, and still this is the case.   We both liked heavy stuff like Motörhead, Melvins, Slayer, and Electric Wizard so It was natural to come by and say “hey let’s start a band together.”   Basically, we feel music in the same way and that’s what unites us.   Then we found in Dario the natural 3rd part. I’ve played with many drummers, but Dario is the best one.   He shares our musical tastes, he’s a really clever and skilled musician, and above all a dear friend.   Now we have a clear idea of how our band has to sound, and that’s it.

Staying on topic, tell us how your songs come to life and what inspired the 'Inanimate.’   Is there a theme, a concept, to your song writing and how do the lyrics tie in?
We have to distinguish the musical composition and the lyrics.   The writing process is really natural like, “Hey guys, I have this riff. What do you think?”   A major impulse comes from Dario, who I always say is the best guitar player of the band.   He’s amazingly creative and our ideas really fit together.   Basically, we develop every song from a riff then we add parts to that.   I organize the structure and only at the end comes the vocal part.
I am the only writer of the lyrics since we started and, no, there’s no concept.   Maybe I’d like to write a concept in the future, but right now I’ve got no time.   The only remarkable theme of our lyrics is nihilism, but sometimes with a sort of bright side outside the Abyss.   I am mainly inspired by my personal life and my lectures.
'Inanimate’ was initially released by Lay Bare Recordings in 2016.   This year, you have chosen to reissue it whit a new track, “Worm,” on the thriving Italian label, Everlasting Spew Records.   How did you get in contact with them and with this repress, what kind of improvement you have brought to the album?
The EP sold out in just a month.   Lots of people asked us for a repress, so we just looked for someone interested in re-releasing our work.   Luckily, we found Everlasting Spew, thanks to our manager Tito Vespasiani, who set up everything with the label.   We have found in Giorgio from Everlasting a really helpful and cool guy.   The label is young and ambitious just like us, so we can grow up together.
Obviously, we want to reprint to be something special, so we recorded the new track “Worm” that sounds more death metal oriented, in order to increase the impact of the album, and decorated everything with a brand new master by the almighty James Plotkin.   You can’t go wrong with him.

Talk aboute bands or the records that have influenced you most as musicians and helped you develop your personal sound.   Are there other kinds of influences, like art and literature, as well?
Speaking of the bands or albums I love, I have to mention, of course, the first five LPs of Black Sabbath, 'Abbey Road’ by the Beatles, '1969’ by The Stooges, 'Hell Awaits’ by Slayer, 'Bleach/In Utero’ by Nirvana, Celtic Frost’s 'Morbid Tales,’ 'Transylvanian Hunger’ by Darkthrone, Carcass’ 'Necroticism,’ Sonic Youth and, naturally, Neurosis and all the doom, sludge, and black metal stuff.   We like also old Swedish death metal and some newer stuff from God City studios, Converge Nails, H.O.F. and so on.
But I have to say that no particular band has inspired us in our style.   We try to be personal and evolve by ourselves in shaping the sound and in the creative process.   Then, I really like to see live bands, most of all I am a music fan, and I like to capture here and there things I like in order to incorporate them in our music.   It’s an important part, I’d say pedagogical, in developing our style.
Apart from music, I read more than I play guitar, so of course my interests in philosophy and literature are a huge part of my life and give me inspiration for my lyrics and atmospheres.   I am not really into this occult or movie stuff, it’s just a cliché of our music genre.   I prefer to write about my personal life and something that really touches me or that has influenced my life path, hybridized sometimes with philosophical themes.   Nietzsche, Jünger, and Heidegger are a big influence for my lyrics, just like Sabbath are for my playing.   I am just tired of bands that sings about voodoo magic, weed, barbarians, and fantasy stuff.   It’s a little prosaic, or at least it does not work with us.   Instead, I like Neurosis or Amenra’s lyrical approach.   “Thrives,” “Hyele,” and “Worm” from Inanimate are a good example of that.

At the moment, you’re ready to play with Candlemass in northern Italy and this summer you will play in a big festival in Iceland (with a lot of important acts like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Neurosis, Sólstafir, Misþyrming and many more).   How do you feel about playing live? Are there any past gigs that you think have been more important than others, something you still remember as “special”?
Playing live is the most important part.   I really dig bands that kick ass live.   We just try to be natural, to play at the loudest volume possible, and to be violent.   We stay simple.   We aren’t the band that takes too much time to sound check monitors and stuff like that.   We like to be “in your face,” to come out and play.   That’s why I regard NAGA basically as a punk/hardcore band, concerning the approach and attitude.   We do not have any filter -- we like to play straight and direct, that’s all.
Concerning the past live shows, I would mention the Watchtower Festival in Pisa with Napalm Death, Church of Misery and The secret, where we met those amazing guys Michael, Lorenzo and Marco (from the Secret/Hyerophant), the Glue lab in Ancona, Tetris in Trieste, and two concerts in our city Naples, the first at Cellar with Marnero, and another on a harbor in the middle of Naples’s gulf called Molosiglio, two D.I.Y. concerts, fully packed with 200-300 people and lots of friends. Do not ever underestimate Naples’ scene. We belong here. It’s a lot better and hotter than others although not publicized.
During your musical career, you have seen lots of changes, first of all the “social-media” revolution, which can help bands to expand their possibilities outside their own country. What do you think about this and have you noticed some differences between past and present? What do you think about the current musical scene in Italy and abroad?
Social media are a double edged sword. It allows bands to spread their message and music around the world, but it’s something that could saturate the scene too. The problem with social media is that now you have to take care of lots of other stuff apart from music, the image, the posts, news and so on. I do not really like this aspect. Emanuele is a little more skilled than me in this, I am not good at it. But, of course, Facebook and Bandcamp have been helping us a lot, same goes with Discogs and eBay where you can spread your music worldwide. I knew our first record Hen was in the hands of Tad Doyle of Tad/Brothers of the Sonic Cloth or in the ones of Mike Scheidt of Yob and it was pretty amazing, since I’ve been listening to these bands since I was 15.
About the scene, I think that now there are many good bands around not only in our genre, the problem is sometimes the public and the live culture. In Germany, where I am at the moment, people go to see live shows buy merch and so on. In Italy, things are going slower, you have to plan carefully every event and so on. But I can not complain about Naples and Italy. In general, we have always had an amazing audience and a good feedback.
Speaking of Italian bands I’d mention above all Grime, Hyerophant, Messa, Caronte, Profanal, Fuoco Fatuo,Zippo/Shores of null, La Casta and Marnero, there are many others but these are the first coming to my mind right now.
Any closing thoughts for the Doomed & Stoned readers?
