After performing on the radio show, Foxx gave Sheeran his number offering studio time free of charge. She invited him to perform, which he agreed to, and after the performance he was contacted by Foxx's manager, who then asked him to perform on Foxx's radio show. After performing a gig in the city, he was approached by Foxx's contact, who produced open-mic nights endorsed by Foxx. In early 2010, Sheeran was having what he described as a "rough time" in the UK, and he spontaneously left for Los Angeles to spend a month "to see what could happen". After spending four years performing in the British live scene, Sheeran met singer Jamie Foxx in Los Angeles, and Foxx liked Sheeran enough to "put on the path to success". Moving from place to place, he performed at open-mic nights across the United Kingdom, where he would sleep on his friends' sofas spending time self-releasing homemade EPs and albums. Three additional singles-" Drunk", " Small Bump", and " Give Me Love"-were released throughout the year, all charting within the top 25 of the UK Singles Chart. " Lego House" was released on 11 November 2011 as the album's third single and matched the chart success of its predecessors, peaking at number five in the UK. Media interest surrounding + was heightened by its two preceding singles-" The A Team" and " You Need Me, I Don't Need You"-which peaked at numbers three and four on the UK Singles Chart, respectively. Jake Gosling and Sheeran produced the majority of the album, with additional production by American hip hop producer No I.D. He previously released five EPs independently. The album is considered Sheeran's commercial breakthrough. It was released on 9 September 2011 by Asylum Records and Atlantic Records. + (pronounced "plus") is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.

Hey guys!
Looking back, ¾ of 2020 is been done. Here is a summary of my go-to tracks/albums so far. Listed works extends beyond the ones released in 2020.
As I was revisiting all my playlists, I have broken down the tracks into different categories. Other summary will be on separate posts.
Links: Khh [x] Krnb [x]
This posts is for major drops; mind-blowing, impactful, deeply enjoyable as a whole.
Links are clickable for easy reference :)
Iconic drops:
<x> Deepflow Founder Limited Edition <x> Loopy No Fear Deluxe edition <x> Esens Marigold Mixtape + Inst <x> YOX Captain America <x> Hilite Legacy <x> Xitsuh Spill <x> Ourealgoat 가족애를 품은 시인처럼 <x> Pop Smoke Shoot for The Star Aim for The Moon Deluxe ver <x> Juice Wrld Legends Never Die <x> Nipsey Hussle Victory Lap
Deepflow Founder to me is an extension of YangHwa. It gives me the same feels like Paloalto’s Chief Life, The Quiett’s 1 Life 2 Live. Beats are classic VMC style. Plus point, there is an instrumental disc for this album.
Loopy No Fear is epic. Although the beatmakers/ producers are not the same through out the album, the flow from one track to another is insanely well-made. You wouldn’t be able to tell that the tracks do not come from the same maker. You can say that Loopy does selects his beats pretty damn well; almost as if they were curated just for him.
E Sens Marigold Mixtape should have been a album instead of just a mixtape. Combination of the classic beats & his rap flow is immaculate. There are also instrumentals for these??! ILY <3
Year of the OX Captain America addresses BLM & other current pressing issues faced by the poc. Using their platform to spread awareness to whoever is willing to listen to the struggles.
Hilite Records Legacy is a mix of lil bit of old skool & whole lotta new skool. With Evo & G2 back for 1 track each, It makes me reminisce the good old days when they were a solid part of Hilite. The youngins do add their own splash of colors in the album. Jo Wonwu from HSR did really good for all his verses, considering he been on the dl in the khh scene. Owell mood rap is a nice surprise for me.
Xitsuh Spill is hella wild. First of all, I couldn’t even tell it was him in the album cover?? Major glow-up it seems I guess. The track with Famous Dex kinda giving me a Lil Uzi Vert vibe, Kill this love track got me in ma feels with his rap-sing voice. Scale go up from 100 to 1000 through this album.
Ourealgoat Like a Poet with Family Love is soooo underrated. Rap style is fresh, non-generic at all. Cater to rather niche audience. Produced, composed, arranged, mixed, mastered by himself?!?! The album artwork too is self-made. Bruhh, tell me who can do it better? The realest GOAT to me.
Pop Smoke Shoot for The Star Aim for The Moon deluxe album is soo good. The featurings are bomb; King Combs, Karol G, Jamie Foxx, Queen Najia. I can say fosho that if the clubs are open here in my country, tracks from this album & remixes will be blasting loud.
Juice Wrld Legends Never Die is such a mooooood. I can listen to it while I’m getting ready, in the commute, 2am in my room staring at the ceiling. Anytime! I love it sm <3 You can tell which khh artists are heavily influenced by this album too, same as for Pop Smoke’s album.
Nipsey Hussle Victory Lap is west coast vibe till the end. King shit, Legendary, Iconic.

ALBUM REVIEW- The College Dropout
Tumblr media
“I woke up early this morning with a new state of mind/ A creative way to rhyme without using knives and guns/ Keep your nose out the sky, keep your heart to God/ And keep your face to the risin' sun”
17 years ago, Chicago superstar Kanye West released his debut album The College Dropout: a classic, highly influential project to emerge from the 2000s. This project that put Kanye West on the radar and led to the immense success he maintained for 15 years straight. Known for its unique production style, lighthearted delivery, and West’s unique rapping style, The College Dropout still remains as one of the best in Kanye West’s discography.
Before he was a controversial, presidential candidate and polarizing figure in pop culture, Kanye West was a young, hungry, poet with top notch beat-making, creative ideas, and stories to tell. When I was younger, some of my favorite songs by him all came from this record (“All Falls Down”, “We Don’t Care”, “Jesus Walks”, “Through The Wire”). I didn’t know at the time, but the hip hop sound I loved all originated from this record. Although this wasn’t the first record of his I heard, the first being Late Registration, my appreciation for hip hop is partially credited to this project.
Kanye dons a lighthearted image in this project, even stating how his music is differentiated from traditional topics in hip hop music like guns, violence, and women. This is illustrated by his tone and delivery. With no aggression in his flow, Kanye seems almost childlike when discussing his family, struggles growing up, dropping out of college, religion, and nearly dying in a car crash in 2002. I think this plays to his advantage. Someone who may not relate to or enjoy the traditional aggressive hip hop tone will appreciate Kanye’s innocence. Some of the verses were already written and performed as spoken word poetry before this album was released. So that innocent poetic vibe is also due to the fact some of these songs are pre-written poetry.
College Dropout has a ton of guests (Jay-Z, Mos Def, Common, Ludacris, Syleena Johnson, Twista, J Ivy, GLC, Cam’Ron, Talib Kweli, and Jamie Foxx). There is not one bad feature in this extensive list. My favorite is J. Ivy on “Never Let Me Down”, with the runner up being Mos Def on “Two Words”. Overall though, there’s no verse that weakens the project; every artist complements Kanye and the track well.
I mentioned earlier, this project is know for its signature production style. You can recognize Kanye West’s slowed-down or sped-up sample of an old R&B or Hip Hop track from the 60s-90s, with an added kick drum and a repeated vocal melody. Once you get hear enough Kanye West, you can tell he produced the beat without needing a tag. Appearing on some of Jay-Z’s and Common’s albums as well, Kanye’s sound is one of a kind.
There are two tracks that stood out to me: “I’ll Fly Away” and “Last Call”. “I’ll Fly Away” is a simple piano melody with a small group of men harmonizing on a chorus repeating “I’ll Fly Away”. It sounds great and sets up the next track “Spaceship” perfectly. I think it’s a good break from the songs and gives the album a feeling like its an experience and differentiates from feeling like a mixtape or playlist. “Last Call” has two parts, the first few minutes being Kanye delivering an outro verse reflecting on different things that led to this point. The second half features Kanye telling the story of everything leading up to him being signed to Roc-A-Fella and releasing this project. It’s always interesting to see behind the scenes, especially little nods like the fact Kanye played “Jesus Walks” to a group of producers and nobody was interested. It illustrates how hard he worked to be successful. For an addict like me, it makes an excellent roll credits.
This album all around is very good and contains no major flaws. However, there are several things I don’t like on this record. First, I personally have never liked “Slow Jamz”. It’s one of his hit singles and many people love it, but I just never rocked with it. It feels overly long, clocking in at over 5 minutes. And since the majority of the song is the very slow chorus, it feels like a drag. I won’t insinuate the song is objectively bad; anyone who likes slow R&B will probably like this track. But for me, I tend to skip it.
There are two sections of this project I went in planning to criticize but changed my mind. I initially wanted criticize the “Workout Plan” skit and “The New Workout Plan”. But, it grew on me and now I can bob my head to the groovy bounce of this track. The song has a message about how women are expected to look a certain way to appeal to male gaze.
I also wanted to criticize “School Spirit”, “School Spirit Skit” 1 & 2, and “Lil Jimmy Skit”. I hadn’t heard this album in a while and I remember feeling annoyed that there were so many skits and jokes. His sophomore album Late Registration also has skits but they’re spaced out so it doesn’t feel like I’m listening to a podcast. But having 3 skits in a 6 minute span seemed excessive. So while I will say I’m not a fan of how many skits are squished into this portion of the album, they’re so funny that I can enjoy them. As a college graduate, I can appreciate the criticisms of those bragging about having a college degree.
College Dropout is an undebatable classic. I wouldn’t call it experimental per se, but its definitely unique and allowed Kanye to differentiate himself from just a “producer rapper”, paving a path separate from his contemporaries. He’s released better projects, but College Dropout is the perfect Kanye West origin story.
Top 3 Tracks:
1) Through The Wire
2) Jesus Walks
3) All Falls Down
Overall Grade: A

favourite music 2017
The affording of enormous weight to barely concealed fragility and vulnerability; when I pore over the contents of my iTunes from the last twelve or so months it’s plainly apparent that this is the hill I’ve elected to die on. Almost all the albums I found myself infatuated with at some point or another in 2017 meditated upon desire, the transience of romance, and the anguish that often accompanies its pursuit.
I’m acutely aware of how oddly this contrasts with my own life, which for the past almost-two-years has been romantically fulfilling in the way that my previous 25 absolutely weren’t. On this, I would say two things. First, that stability is elusive even (maybe especially?) for the most outwardly rose-coloured of us, and that maintaining relationship hygge takes compromise and is not easy, and for those reasons feelings of vulnerability are never far from the front of my mind; and, second, that it’s testament to the skill of certain songwriters and performers that their work was able to make this gay-ass conventionalist really feel something every now and again last year.
I wouldn’t want to suggest that I only just worked out that the theatrical presentation of desire is something I’m drawn to, but certainly there were some things in the past year that I really did begin to understand. Theatricality is often used in a critical sense as pejorative; something that is too extra, that goes too far, that is all tell and no show. Despite its predisposition towards excess, musical theatre has, for instance, always played out as sterile and spurious to me. (Sorry. And look at it this way, you don’t ever need to worry about getting me tickets to Hamilton). It’s so dramatic that it becomes too dramatic; your self-awareness isn’t allowed the chance to be suspended, even for a moment. An album like Lorde’s Melodrama makes its intentions apparent before you’ve even heard a note of it, but its theatrics (and there are many - think of the wailed chorus of “Writer In The Dark”, the gory car crash of “Homemade Dynamite”, the bridge in “Supercut” that accelerates like you’re on a bike rushing down a hill) are as easily consumed by sitting silently in tears as they are dancing, or walking, or lifting heavy weights, or running up a hill (to make or not to make a deal with God), or lying in blissful supta baddha konasana. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that hyperemotional vulnerability is for all seasons and for all hours of the day and I am now happy to welcome it into every aspect of my life.
I wrote over fifty blurbs for various songs on the Singles Jukebox last year. Some I loved, some I hated, what’s new. I wrote a blurb for “Praying”, Kesha’s first solo single in nearly five years, which turned out to be both the highest scoring song on the site for 2017 and the champion of my personal “list”. I sort of said all this already on the Jukebox, but my love for “Praying” lies nearly entirely in the way Kesha leans so heavily into her aphorisms, finding new ways to bring profundity to ostensibly simple lines like “I’m proud of who I am”. (Contrast this with most of Taylor Swift’s 2017 work, which forewent specific detail in favour of portentously loaded maxim, but forgot about nuance and came up mostly dry). When Kesha punctuates her sermon with a thunderous kick drum, it’s basically game over. As the stories of survivors of sexual assault, abuse and harassment began to dominate news media in the second half of the year, the song only gathered further resonance.
Lorde’s album held court as my favourite for most of the year. A promo image released by Kelela at the beginning of August threatened a coup. The odds shortened a few days later upon the release of its lead single and the arrival of the full album at the beginning of October marked the tangible takeover. Take Me Apart is all juxtaposition, which when applied to albums is often code for jumbled quagmire, but here there’s too much attention to detail, steadfastness of narrative, and, er, feeling, to get mixed up in anything like that. It see-saws between playful flirting, introspection, self-acceptance, control, loss of control, falling slowly through the sky, and falling fast through the abyss. I love it so much. It’s also very queer and very Black. Support Black queer art! Especially when it’s this well crafted.
Aside from all THAT, my favourite things in music last year were Moses Sumney’s Tiny Desk Concert, attending the Lorde show in the Botanic Gardens,  the line “every single day I fight another war; every single night I feel more powerful!” in Rina Sawayama’s “Take Me As I Am”, and Rihanna telling Diplo his music sounded like a “a reggae song at an airport”.
My ten favourite songs of 2017 were:
1. Kesha “Praying” - as above and here;
2. Lorde “Green Light” - see here. The score given, however, is wrong. Add another point.
3. Sigrid “Strangers” - see here. I can’t wait until she’s everywhere and everyone knows her; her potential to me scans as “unlimited / infinite / fucking enormous, if it must be quantifiable”.
4. MUNA “I Know a Place”. The album version is acceptable but I’m also partial to this live one, which involves some changes to the lyrics.
5. Tove Lo “Disco Tits”. Like a wonky, filthy Kylie B-side played underwater.
6. Kelela “Turn To Dust”. Refer also to the first set of songs below. She didn’t play this at her concert this week, which is lucky, because otherwise its title may have proved prophetic.
7. Nilüfer Yanya “Baby Luv” - see here. See also dirgey diatribe above re: vulnerability.
8. Rae Morris “Do It” - I’ve become more and more besotted with this as time has passed and am not sure whether I’m most impressed by a) the wordplay b) the ping-ponging percussion in the second verse c) the subtle yet giant switch-up halfway through d) the soaring vocals or e) managing all of the above in less than 3 and a half minutes.
9. Rina Sawayama “Alterlife” - it did not take me long to request for lamination of a stan card for a popstar who loves key changes and here deftly incorporates influences as diverse as the Need For Speed soundtrack, Samantha Mumba and Madonna at her glassiest.
10. Tove Styrke “Mistakes” - see here. I’m ready for her to run away with 2018, in or out of a wedding dress.
Aside from those, here are some other songs I enjoyed in 2017, variously categorised and (with the “top 10″) collected in a Spotify playlist, located here:

My Favorite Vintage Music: Part II
Tumblr media
All graphics created with Canva
Hey, guys! Welcome to Part II of My Favorite Vintage Music! Today, we're continuing with the 1970s and 1980s. Let's jump right in!
Tumblr media
So… I tried to narrow this list down. I really did. But the 70s has some of my favorite music ever, and it would be an absolute CRIME to not share all of these songs with you. You’re welcome.
Fleetwood Mac - “Landslide”, “Dreams”, and “Go Your Own Way”
What better way to begin the list than with one of the most iconic bands ever. Listening to any of their music, but especially these songs, makes me want to dress like a hippie/flower child and run through a field of flowers. And run around in a thunderstorm. And also close my eyes and sway to the music forever.
Stevie Nicks remains one of the queens of the world who we do not deserve.
I love how all of these tracks sound so different from each other. “Landslide” puts you in your sad and reflective feelings, “Dreams” makes you want to start swaying and levitating, and “Go Your Own Way” makes you want to find someone from your past to scream the lyrics to.
Eagles - “Take It Easy”
Definitely a wanderlust type of song. This one never fails to make me smile and feel lighter. I loooove listening to this when I’m on a long drive. It definitely makes my driving anxiety a little better.
Queen - “Fat Bottomed Girls”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Killer Queen”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Alright, don’t judge me for picking so many. I could have included more. These are straight-up JAMS. I didn’t mean to put them in a particular order, but Bohemian Rhapsody is definitely at the bottom of my list right now. I used to adore the song and thought I could never get tired of it, but then I had to edit videos of two dance routines to this song this summer. So I heard it probably 50 times. I’m giving it a break and hopefully when I come back to it, I’ll love it again! The song is revolutionary and so genius and it deserves all the respect. The other tracks are so fun and make me feel empowered.
Don McLean - “Vincent”
youtube
I don’t know how I can effectively describe how much I love this song. I just heard it for the first time earlier this year, but it has become one of my top favorites of all time. Vincent Van Gogh is one of my favorite painters, with Starry Night being my favorite painting ever. Before I heard this song, I only knew Don McLean for “American Pie”. “Vincent” is underappreciated and seems to fit with the slow and calming style on the album that features those two songs. Some of my favorite music includes songs that feel like pure magic, and that is definitely the most fitting word for this piece. It sounds like a lullaby. It paints vivid pictures in your mind. I love “Vincent” for not only its stunning lyrics and imagery but also the sweet and calming guitar that accompanies the entire track.
Van Morrison - “Into the Mystic”
Keeping this talk of magic going, next up is Van Morrison! This song is the epitome of my Flower Child playlist on Spotify. I was so excited to get the Moondance album on vinyl specifically to see how this song sounded on it. The result? It sounds gorgeous.
James Taylor - “Fire and Rain”
I guess I’m often a simple girl when it comes to music. Sometimes I can’t resist a slow and peaceful song with a guitar and some piano. Listening to this while it’s raining is always a beautiful idea. This is another piece that I can listen to nonstop and I always sing along.
Billy Joel - “She’s Always a Woman” and “Vienna”
Sometimes, you need some moody and sad songs. I have a bad habit of listening to this kind of music when I’m down. However, you don’t have to be in a bad mood to love these tracks!
John Denver - “The Music Is You”
Okay, so my overused word for my previous post was “dreamy”. Now it’s “magic”. How can you listen to this song and not feel so e n c h a n t e d? This is another piece that makes me want to run through a field of flowers.
Tanya Tucker - “Delta Dawn”
This one might seem a little different from my other favorites, but at least going from John Denver to this created was a fairly smooth transition. While our mom often played her favorite 80s music for my sister and me, our dad loved playing his old country favorites.
I love the story behind the lyrics. Listening to this song is almost like reading a book, so it’s perfect for this bookworm right here. Tanya Tucker’s voice is so unique and always made my sister and I sing along. My favorite part of “Delta Dawn” is definitely the beginning with the chorus of voices. So powerful. So transcendent.
Commodores - “Easy”
What a fluid and breeeeeeezy song. It’s actually on my playlist called “Sunday Morning”. The name was obviously inspired by the lyrics of this song and is full of similar light tracks from all decades.
Tumblr media
Most of my favorite vintage music comes from the 1940s to the 1970s, but I grew up listening to my mom’s favorites hits from the 80s. I do have my own favorites as well, so I had to include this decade! I’m not a huge fan of a lot of the synth-pop music that dominated the decade, but here are some of my favorites!
Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes - (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life
I think we all know what movie scene this song is from, so you should know why this track makes me so happy. Dirty Dancing is one of my favorite movies and this song always puts me in a good, dancing mood. I can’t help but picture the final scene of the movie, so I can’t help but smile.
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
Like I said, I’m not a huge fan of music with a lot of synth, but I’m totally on board with this song. It’s so mysterious and catchy.
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart
This is one of my mom’s favorites, so my sister and I grew up jamming to this song. The emotion and power behind Bonnie Tyler’s voice amaze me every time. Another great number to yell the lyrics to.
Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight
youtube
A MASTERPIECE. A POWERFUL, ANSTY MASTERPIECE.
I don’t love a ton of angry songs, but this one is so good. I love acting so dramatic while singing along to this one, especially with my mom. This is our song. She’s not super emotional and touchy-feely, but listening to this song is one way that we can bond and have a good time together. Our favorite part is the iconic drums at around 3:16 (in the music video above). We always play the air drums and headbang.
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - I Love Rock ‘n Roll
I don’t listen to a lot of the same music that other people my age listen to, so when there’s a song that most people know, it makes listening to music in a public environment so much more fun! Most people I know also know this song. I love it. In contrast with my hippie and flower child songs, this track makes me want to dress in all black, maybe even some (faux) leather.
Tumblr media
I grew up with a lot of this music, so I love how some of these artists are still popular today. I’ve noticed that more people my age are beginning to become huge fans of artists like Fleetwood Mac and Queen. That makes me so excited! Sometimes I tend to love the more popular tracks that I grew up listening to, like the ones I chose for this list. Those are the songs that still stick with people today. If you have any suggestions for underappreciated songs by any of the artists on the lists, don’t be afraid to send them my way! I live for music recommendations.
While writing down some of these songs, I thought of covers done by current artists who I love. Isaac Waddington has done great covers of “She’s Always a Woman” that I will listen to on repeat.
youtube
He first performed it in 2015 for an audition on Britain’s Got Talent. Here’s his 2019 cover! I’m so obsessed.
Ansel Elgort’s voice is so. smooth. in his cover of “Easy” that he performed in a Riff-Off on an episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden and Jamie Foxx in 2017.
youtube
*Breaks replay button*
The only acceptable reaction to have to this video is James’ reaction.
I actually found “The Music Is You” from seeing Greta Van Fleet cover it on YouTube! When I got to see them live in September in Kansas City, I was one of the only people around me who knew the lyrics, and that made me sad. I love the love that Greta Van Fleet has for John Denver, and how much they share his music.
youtube
They sing “The Music Is You” as an intro to their original song “You’re the One”. So angelic.
I have updated my Spotify playlist, “Top Vintage Favs”, with the songs I mentioned in this post. Feel free to play it in order to go throughout the decades, or have some fun with playing it on shuffle and travel back and forth through time!
Thanks for reading,
Morgan ♥️

Stepping into the spotlight with... MC KITTEN
Born in Brooklyn, New York MC KITTEN (knowledge Implies Thought To Erase Negativity) isn’t your ordinary female MC. She’s also a certified teacher and personal trainer; both which she takes as seriously as she does her music. Her weekly newsletter Beats, Books and Barbells helps expose readers to literature, fitness, music and culture. I sat down to listen to her album Midlife Crisis and I must say I was blown away. I don’t know what I thought it was going to be like but it was definitely worth the listen. With songs like “Clap”, “Comin’ up” and “Sexy Boy”, she’ll keep your head bobbin from the first to the last tracks. (I kept Clap on repeat I’m adding it to my workout catalog!) I only had three questions for KIT:
Spotlight: What made you want to pursue music?
KIT:  Once I started teaching, I gained a new perspective. I wanted to express what I thought were possible solutions to problems my students faced. Most of my early songs had allusions to poets, writers, and thinkers like Gwendolyn Brooks, Gordon Parks, and the Bible. I recorded an album and performed at a few open mics, but wasn't able to balance it with teaching and just stopped. Ten years later, I was supporting a student who needed help with his vocabulary homework. He was supposed to write sentences with the words his teacher gave him. Something in me clicked and I decided to write a verse using as many of the words as I could. That was it. From February - August 2016 I wrote and recorded Midlife Crisis.
Spotlight: Who are your musical inspirations?
KIT:  First inspiration I would say is KRS (he's also the reason I chose my monicker KIT - Knowledge Implies Thought). I love his mission and message. I do believe hip hop should be a vehicle for education and unity, although maybe that's just the teacher in me. Another inspiration is Eminem from the early 2000's. I had just begun teaching in the South Bronx and because I was new to the system, I was assigned classes with the "bad kids". But they weren't bad. They were witty, funny, observant, and frustrated because they were so far behind their peers and had the "oh, you don't want THAT class" reputation. Eminem early albums reminded me a lot of those kids. He's a friggin' genius but the school system never gave him a proper forum to realize his talents. His grit is something I admire and his lyricism is insane.
Spotlight: If you had the chance to work with anyone musically, who would it be?
KIT:  If I had the opportunity to work with Jamie Foxx I would jump at the chance. He is obviously a talented musician, but also goofy and humble. I think a many great ideas come from play and laughter and since my content tends to be heavy social commentary, I'd like an opportunity to create something light and with a sense of humor. The humility is important because, to me, that indicates a willingness to take risks. There is no sense of posturing. Goofiness and humility work in tandem.
She’s breaking ground and making quite a name for herself. She’s proof that brains, beauty and brawn can co exist and women are more than just cupcakes and rainbows. Her album Midlife Crisis is on sale on Bandcamp. Check her out on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. To join her mailing list email her at [email protected]. As far as upcoming shows, when she’s not moving across the globe (working and living in London, Spain & Israel)  most likely you can catch her at The End Of The Weak on Bowery and at Pyramid downtown; both in New York City, NY.
Stay Tuned!

It’s been nearly ten years since Lil Wayne, on Birdman’s 2009 hit, “Money to Blow,” implored listeners not to worry about Cash Money’s future because the label would be all right as long as they “put Drake on every hook.”
Since then, Drake’s earned the right to be mentioned in the same breath as Rap’s Greatest Scene-Stealers ever—Busta Rhymes, André 3000, and Lil Wayne—as he’s swiped dozens of songs out from under artists on the strength of show-stopping guest verses.

Even more, a Drake feature practically guarantees you a hit: over the past decade, he’s guested on seven No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart (“No Lie,” “Moment 4 Life,” “Right Above It,” “Aston Martin Music,” “I’m On One,” “Say Something,” and “Only”), and 13 Top 10 hits on the Hot 100 (“Work,” “What's My Name,” “She Will,” “MIA,” “Look Alive,” “No Guidance,” “Going Bad,” “Yes Indeed,” “Right Above It,” “F***** Problem,” “Love Me,” “I’m On One,” and “Walk It Talk It”).
With his status as hip-hop’s Feature King unchallenged, here are Drake’s 50 best guest verses.

But first, a couple of notes before we begin:
We’ve omitted songs where Drake only sings the hook: Rick Ross’ “Diced Pineapples” and “Aston Martin Music”; Lil Wayne’s “She Will,” “Love Me,” and “With You”; Gucci Mane’s “Back on Road”; Tyga’s “Still Got It.”
Also ineligible are remixes that double as Drake freestyles: “We Made It,” “Paris Morton Music,” “Sweeterman,” “Tell Your Friends,” and “Freak N You.”
Without further ado...
50. Nicki Minaj — “Champion” ft. Drake, Nas & Young Jeezy
Album: Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012)Producer: T-Minus, Nikhil Seetharam
Two years before he was having tea with Erykah Badu on 2014 loosie “Days In the East,” Drizzy mentions that he used to stay with her in his verse on “Champion.” And while Jeezy might steal the show with his appearance, Drake delivers the more confident verse, reflecting on how he makes “hits in three acre cribs” and “stars outta basic bitches.”
49. PartyNextDoor — “Recognize” ft. Drake
Album: PartyNextDoor Two (2014)Producer: PartyNextDoor
This is Peak Drake: In the span of two bars, he plans trips to Europe, then remembers his side piece’s Benz needs snow-equipped tires.
48. Preme — “DnF” ft. Drake & Future
Album: Dear America (2014)Producer: Noel Cadastre & Noah “40” Shebib
You’d be remiss to bring up this verse around lyrical heads, but admit it: Drake’s performance on “DnF” is unbelievably catchy. Even more, it contains one of the best Sad Boy Drake sequences in his catalog.
47. Big Sean — “Made” ft. Drake
Album: Finally Famous... Vol. 3: BIG (2010)Producer: Kanye West
In the summer of 2010, Big Sean should’ve known better than to request a feature from the Rap Rookie of the Year. Predictably, his decision backfired: Drake not only washed the Detroit rapper on his own song (“Made”), but arguably had the best overall verse on the entire mixtape. I wish I could say Sean learned his lesson, but considering what took place three summers later (Kendrick’s guest spot on “Control”), we both know the answer.
46. Rick Ross — “Gold Roses” ft. Drake
Album: Port of Miami 2 (2019)Producer: OZ, Syk Sense, Vinylz, & The Rascals
Writing about the song in his review of Port of Miami 2, my friend Yoh said it best: “Drake has one of the most seamless deliveries in hip-hop. The words don’t have any weight, and his voice never fumbles the cadence. He steps into a particular zone. As a lyricist and performer, Drake must be considered a great rapper. The blasphemy line. The double-jointed line, too. Scorpion needed ‘Gold Roses’ more than Port of Miami 2.”
45. French Montana — “No Shopping” ft. Drake
Album: MC4 (2016)Producer: Murda Beatz, Cubeatz
Congrats to Joe Budden for turning a one-sided war against Drake into the most unnecessary rap beef in recent memory. In the summer of 2016, their feud culminated in Drake sending multiple shots at Budden on French Montana’s “No Shopping.” In hindsight, these barbs overshadow Drizzy’s superb verse, which has earned its place in the canon of underrated Drake guest spots.
44. Bun B — “Put It Down” ft. Drake
Album: Trill OG (2010)Producer: Boi-1da, D10
Nine years on, Drake’s verse on Bun B’s “Put It Down” has aged like fine wine. Following a couple of cringy lines early on (“I never cheat unless you count the girls I cheat on;” “Homesick just when I thought I was sick of home”), Drake finds his sweet spot and begins rapping like the superstar he’d soon become.
43. Meek Mill — “Going Bad” ft. Drake
Album: Championships (2018)Producer: Wheezy
Drake’s 2018 guest-appearance blitz will go down as one of the best in his career. After owning the winter with “Look Alive” and “Walk It Talk It,” the summer with “Yes Indeed” and “SICKO MODE,” and the fall with “Never Recover” and “MIA,” Drake still had enough left in the tank to supply his former rival, Meek Mill, with one of his best verses of the year on their reunion collaboration, “Going Bad.”
42. Jamie Foxx — “Fall For Your Type” ft. Drake
Album: Best Night of My Life (2010)Producer: Noah “40” Shebib, Rico Love, & Drake
After spending 2010 singing hooks for A-list rappers like Birdman (“Money to Blow”), Lil Wayne (“With You”), and Rick Ross (“Aston Martin Music”), Drake capped off the year by flexing his versatility alongside an A-list R&B star. On Jamie Foxx’s “Fall For Your Type,” Drake’s closing verse introduced fans to the off-script, sing-song style he’s now known to implement when rapping over R&B beats.
41. Rihanna — “What’s My Name?” ft. Drake
Album: Loud (2010)Producer: StarGate, Kuk Harrell
“Best I Ever Had” and “Find Your Love” may have been the first tracks that showcased Drake’s mainstream popularity, but his guest spot on Rihanna’s No. 1 hit, “What’s My Name,” proved he could be a pop-star in his own right.
40. T.I. — “Poppin Bottles” ft. Drake
Album: No Mercy (2010)Producer: T-Minus, Nikhil Seetharam
On the No Mercy standout, Drake makes up for a lack of lyrics with a devastating flow, cementing his swag-soaked performance as one of the first iconic club bangers of his career.
39. Timbaland — “Know Bout Me” ft. Drake & JAY-Z
Album: Opera Noir (2013)Producer: Timbaland & J-Roc
Timbaland’s “Know Bout Me” could’ve been another stellar collaboration between JAY-Z and Drake. Instead, Jigga merely spoke 16 words on the intro, “We gotta sell these bitches the dream, my n***a. N****s like Walt Disney around this bitch.” Thankfully, Drake made up for his counterpart’s no-show and went in with a double-time delivery on the second verse.
38. The Game — “Good Girls Go Bad” ft. Drake
Album: The R.E.D. Album (2011)Producer: Cool & Dre
Despite being one of the cornier verses in his catalog, you’d be hard pressed to find another Drake guest spot as funny as his appearance on Game’s “Good Girls Go Bad.” The 16-bar verse is filled with hilarious quotables, from the opening lines (“Good evening, I’m in Chicago at the Elysian / With some girls that say they models but ummm, I don’t believe ‘em”) to his use of childhood TV references as pickup lines, to the way in which he tosses aside a former flame in brutally honest fashion.
37. Waka Flocka Flame — “Round of Applause” ft. Drake
Album: Triple F Life: Friends, Fans & Family (2012)Producer: Lex Luger
Following his sympathetic verse about strippers on The Weeknd’s “The Zone,” Drake pivoted on Waka Flocka’s strip club anthem, “Round of Applause,” delivering the most malicious stripper tribute of his career. Backed by Lex Luger’s pulsating beat, Drizzy leaves his feelings at the door.
36. SBTRKT — “Wildfire (OVO Remix)” ft. Drake
Album: N/A (2011)Producer: Jerome
On May 20, 2011, Drake posted a remix of SBTRKT’s “Wildfire” to his OVO blog. The track was quickly erased from our minds, however, when “Dreams Money Can Buy” arrived hours later. Eight years on, you won’t find many people who’re familiar with Drake’s verse on “Wildfire,” let alone aware of its greatness. This lack of recognition, though, is exactly what makes it such a rewarding listen.
35. Nicki Minaj — “Only” ft. Drake, Lil Wayne & Chris Brown
Album: The Pinkprint (2014)Producer: Dr. Luke, Cirkut & JMIKE
Is it the strongest song by Young Money’s three-headed monster? Not a chance. But that doesn’t mean it’s not an entertaining listen, especially Drake’s verse, which is perhaps the funniest guest spot in his discography.
34. YG — “Who Do You Love?” ft. Drake
Album: My Krazy Life (2014)Producer: Mustard
As someone who loves to ride the latest wave, Drake had no choice but to link up with 2014’s hottest rapper-producer duo, YG and Mustard, on the former’s hit single, “Who Do You Love?” After lacing the Bompton rapper with an excellent guest spot, though, Drizzy was forced to settle a dispute with Rappin’ 4-Tay, who called him out for biting his 1994 song, “Playaz Club.”
33. The Weeknd — “Live For” ft. Drake
Album: Kiss Land (2013)Producer: The Weeknd, DaHeala & DannyBoyStyles
Nearly a year after linking up on Thursday standout “The Zone,” Abel and Aubrey joined forces for “Live For,” the fourth single from The Weeknd’s debut studio album, Kiss Land. Released in August 2013, a few weeks before the release of Nothing Was the Same, the sprawling cut found Drake assessing the competition.
32. Fetty Wap — “My Way (Remix)” ft. Drake
Album: N/A (2015)Producer: NickEBeats, JayFrance & Micah Street
If you’re still not convinced of the power of the Drake co-sign: With this remix, Fetty became the first rapper to have his first four debut singles chart in the top 10 on the Hot Rap Songs chart simultaneously: "Trap Queen" (No. 2), "My Way" (No. 3), "679" (No. 5), and "Again" (No. 8).
31. DJ Drama — “We in This Bitch 1.5” ft. Drake & Future
Album: Quality Street Music (2012)Producer: Kane Beatz & JMIKE
Occasionally, Drake is capable of stealing a song on the strength of his charisma. DJ Drama’s “We In This Bitch 1.5” is one of those rare instances, as Drizzy needs just one minute to set the tone and hijack the song, with a lively opening sequence.
30. The Weeknd — “The Zone” ft. Drake
Album: Thursday (2011)Producer: Doc McKinney & Illangelo
The first collaboration between The Weeknd and Drake on one of Abel’s projects, “The Zone” lived up to the potential the duo displayed on Take Care standouts “Crew Love” and “The Ride.” “The Zone” sees The Weeknd set the stage for Drake’s big entrance. From there, Drizzy offers up the most gentle verse about a strip club ever laid to wax.
29. Lil Wayne — “It’s Good” ft. Drake & Jadakiss”
Album: Tha Carter IV (2011)Producer: Cool & Dre
This song is remembered for Lil Wayne’s subliminal shot at JAY-Z, but Drake has the best verse on the collab. The Boy’s appearance is a short one, but it hooks you immediately, before it ends with him announcing Wayne’s return home in triumphant fashion.
28. Mary J. Blige — “Mr. Wrong” ft. Drake
Album: My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1) (2011)Producer: Jim Jonsin & Rico Love
It’s easy to forget from 2009 to 2011, Drake was the Best R&B Guest Rapper Alive, scoring features with everyone from legends Mary J. Blige (“The One”), Alicia Keys (“Un-thinkable (I’m Ready)”), and Jamie Foxx (“Digital Girl,” “Fall For Your Type”), to present-day superstars like Chris Brown (“Deuces (Remix)”), Sean Garrett (“Feel Love”), and Trey Songz (“I Invented Sex,” “Unusual”). His second collab with the Queen, “Mr. Wrong,” remains his most underrated R&B feature to date.
27. Fabolous — “Throw It In the Bag (Remix)” ft. Drake & The-Dream
Album: N/A (2009)Producer: Tricky Stewart & The-Dream
Long before he’d declare his intent to give Halle Berry a baby on 2013’s “Versace (Remix),” Drake professed his love for older women on the remix to Fabulous’ 2009 hit single, “Throw It In the Bag.”
26. Travis Scott — “SICKO MODE” ft. Drake & Swae Lee
Album: Astroworld (2018)Producer: Hit-Boy, OZ, Tay Keith, Cubeatz, Chahayed & Mike Dean
If Drake was properly credited, there’s a good chance “SICKO MODE” would rank inside the top 10. Not that it matters much, considering his opening and closing verses are arguably the highlights of the ASTROWORLD standout.
25. Aaliyah — “Enough Said” ft. Drake
Album: N/A (2012)Producer: Noah “40” Shebib
In order to appreciate the overlooked greatness of this 2012 loosie, let’s ignore the fact that Drake is listed as the featured artist on an OVO-sanctioned, posthumous Aaliyah single. Backed by 40’s smoky, after-hours R&B production and the late singer’s silky falsetto, Drizzy unleashes one of his classic confessionals.
24. Game — “100” ft. Drake
Album: The Documentary 2 (2015)Producer: Cardo & Juliano
Twenty-six days before Meek Mill would kick-off the biggest rap beef this decade, Drake was already on the defensive. When listening to his verse on “100,” you don’t have to read between the lines. He sounds exhausted while reflecting on his position atop hip-hop, and the incessant threats that come with it. And yet, Drizzy still appears unfazed, too busy making his circle smaller to concern himself with opposing forces on the horizon.
23. A$AP Rocky — “F**kin’ Problems” ft. Drake, Kendrick Lamar & 2 Chainz
Album: Long.Live.ASAP (2013)Producer: Noah “40” Shebib
Released in October 2012, “Problems” wasn’t just the year’s most star-studded posse cut, but also a changing of the guard moment for hip-hop. At the time, Rocky was two months away from dropping his debut album; 2 Chainz and Kendrick were fresh off releasing theirs. And then, of course, you had Drake, who was just hitting his prime. While it’s debatable which rapper had the best verse, there’s no denying Drizzy came off as the biggest star of the bunch.
22. Lil Reese — “Us (Remix)” ft. Drake & Rick Ross
Album: N/A (2012)Producer: Young Chop
By the fall of 2012, Drake was amidst a flawless streak of guest spots: Rick Ross’ “Stay Schemin’,” DJ Drama’s “We In This Bitch 1.5,” Nicki Minaj’s “Champion,” 2 Chainz’s “No Lie,” French Montana’s “Pop That,” Meek Mill’s “Amen,” Aaliyah’s “Enough Said.” As if that wasn’t already one of the greatest runs by a featured rapper, Drizzy made sure to earn more street cred points that October, when he hopped on to the remix to Lil Reese’s “Us”.
21. Birdman — “Money to Blow” ft. Drake & Lil Wayne
Album: Priceless (2009)Producer: Drumma Boy
Fresh off a summer in which he catapulted to superstardom on the back of a handful of hit singles (“Best I Ever Had,” "Successful,” “Forever”), Drake proved he possessed the Midas touch on the fall 2009 anthem, “Money to Blow,” which, of course, is remembered for Lil Wayne’s prophetic line: “We gon’ be alright if we put Drake on every hook.”
20. Tinashe — “2 On (Remix)” ft. Drake & OB O’Brien
Album: N/A (2014)Producer: Mustard, Redwine & DJ Marley Waters
Drake ran the rap game in 2014 solely on the strength of one-off singles. Take a moment and look at this murderer’s row of hits he released between December 2013 and October 2014: “0 to 100/The Catch Up,” “Tuesday,” “Draft Day,” “Trophies,” “Wade Made It,” “Days in the East,” “How Bout Now,” “6 God,” and “Heat of the Moment.” I mean, good God. Perhaps the greatest testament to Drake’s unbelievable run that year is that “2 On/Thotful” is probably the eighth best song in the group.
19. ILOVEMAKONNEN — “Tuesday” ft. Drake
Album: ILoveMakonnen (2014)Producer: Sonny Digital & Metro Boomin
Built around Sonny Digital and Metro Boomin’s syrupy beat and iLoveMakonnen’s Auto-Tune-enhanced vocals, “Tuesday” provided Drake an opportunity to step out of his comfort zone. By delivering perhaps the best vocal performance he’s ever laid to wax, Drake helped “Tuesday” go viral, which in turn, minted Makonnen a star and gave the most boring day of the week new meaning.
18. Kendrick Lamar — “Poetic Justice” ft. Drake
Album: good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012)Producer: Scoop DeVille
The Kendrick Washed Drake on Take Care camp (via his scene-stealing guest spot on “Buried Alive Interlude”) seem to have forgotten that The Boy returned the favor on Kendrick’s debut album, good kid, m.A.A.D city. Drake’s appearance on “Poetic Justice” might not jump out at you, but when stacked against either of Kendrick’s verses on the song, it’s obvious who comes out on top.
17. Nicki Minaj — “Moment 4 Life” ft. Drake
Album: Pink Friday (2010)Producer: T-Minus
“This supposed to be y’all year? We ain’t get the memo,” Drake raps on “Moment 4 Life,” a highlight from Nicki Minaj’s debut album, Pink Friday. At the time, you couldn’t blame Young Money’s roster for feeling themselves. In the fall of 2010, the label boasted the Best Rapper Alive, Lil Wayne, along with the Rap co-Rookies of the Year, Drizzy and Nicki, both of which released their debuts within five months of one another.
16. Alicia Keys — “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready) (Remix)” ft. Drake
Album: N/A (2010)Producer: Alicia Keys, Kenny Brothers Jr. & Noah “40” Shebib
For someone who, in recent years, has been clowned for their immaturity and inability to grow as an artist, it’s easy to forget that there was a time when Drake seemed wise beyond his years. This verse is enough of a reminder, as a 23-year-old Drizzy voices his inner fears about partying too much and not finding the right woman.
15. Lil Wayne — “Believe Me” ft. Drake
Album: N/A (2014)Producer: Vinylz & Boi-1da
Five years after Lil Wayne told listeners, on “Money to Blow,” not to worry about Cash Money’s future because the label would be alright as long as they "put Drake on every hook,” Drake continued his mentor’s prophetic claims on “Believe Me.” From the jump, Drizzy assumes the role of host to the welcome-back party, rolling out the red carpet for his Big Homie, with one of his best guest spots this decade.
14. Big Sean — “Blessings” ft. Drake
Album: Dark Sky Paradise (2015)Producer: Vinylz & Allen Ritter
Big Sean dropped “Blessings” on January 30, 2015, exactly two weeks before Drake would surprise-release If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. In hindsight, his verse here gives us a taste of the subject matter he’d visit on IYRTITL: Feuding with YMCMB over unpaid royalties, worrying about his mother, throwing shade at the press, and, of course, repping the 6.
13. Lil Wayne — “Right Above It” ft. Drake
Album: I Am Not a Human Being (2010)Producer: Kane Beatz
If I Am Not a Human Being was Lil’ Wayne’s pre-prison curtain-call, then “Right Above It” was his victory lap. Backed by triumphant production courtesy of Kane Beatz, Drake, the Rap Rookie of the Year, delivered a career-defining guest verse that marks the moment the torch was passed between the Young Money President and his protégé.
12. BlocBoy JB — “Look Alive” ft. Drake
Album: Simi (2018)Producer: Tay Keith
Considering that the best part of Drake’s guest appearance on “Look Alive” is the infectious hook, you could argue that his eight-bar verse doesn’t deserve to be ranked this high. In this case, however, Drake does such an excellent job blending the hook and his first verse together, that you have no choice but to consider them one and the same.
11. 2 Chainz — “Big Amount” ft. Drake
Album: Daniel Son; Necklace Son (2016)Producer: Buddah Bless
On “Big Amount,” Drake raps circles around 2 Chainz without even breaking a sweat. His verse is so effortlessly executed that it’s easy to miss how casually arrogant it actually is. And yet, once his calm, cool and collected delivery wins you over, don’t be surprised if you find yourself admiring each arrogant boast.
10. Meek Mill — “Amen” ft. Drake
Album: Dreamchasers 2 (2012)Producer: Key Wane & Jahlil Beats
Backed by a gospel-clapping, organ-laced piano loop, there’s no denying fans were shocked to hear Meek rap over a beat so far out of his wheelhouse, so effortlessly. In an alternate universe, we might remember “Amen” for Meek’s jubilant hook. Unfortunately for Meek stans, though, The Boy showed up and stole the song while operating on cruise control.
9. 2 Chainz — “No Lie” ft. Drake
Album: Based on a T.R.U. Story (2012)Producer: Mike Will Made It
Fresh off his show-stopping guest spots on Kanye West’s “Mercy” and Nicki Minaj’s “Beez In the Trap,” 2 Chainz entered the summer of 2012 as the hottest feature in hip-hop. Then, in an admirable move in the spirit of competition, Drake reclaimed the title by dusting Tity Boi on the Atlanta rapper’s debut single, “No Lie.” Thanks to his contagious hook and instantly-quotable verse, the banger was inescapable that summer.
8. Rick Ross — “Made Men” ft. Drake
Album: Ashes to Ashes (2010)Producer: 2 Tall Beats
After spending the fall of 2010 handing out guest verses to R&B singers such as Jamie Foxx (“Fall For Your Type”), Tank (“Celebration”), Rihanna (“What’s My Name”), and Trey Songz (“The Usual”), Drake needed to raise his street cred. So, that December, he hopped on one of the hardest beats he’d ever come across, then proceeded to murder the hardest rapper alive, Rick Ross, on his own shit.
7. PARTYNEXTDOOR — “Over Here” ft. Drake
Album: PartyNextDoor (2013)Producer: PartyNextDoor
The most underrated verse of Drake’s career is a victim of circumstance. Released the same day as “Versace (Remix)”—only one of the two or three best guest verses in his catalog—“Over Here” remains criminally overlooked in the canon of Drizzy features. Backed by a murky beat courtesy of PND and 40, Drake’s double time verse makes you feel like you’re sitting shotgun in his Bugatti while he navigates through the streets of Toronto.
6. Future — “Sh!t (Remix)” ft. Drake & Juicy J
Album: N/A (2013)Producer: Mike WiLL Made-It
Released in December 2013, Future’s “Sh!t (Remix)” arrived just three months after Drake released the biggest album of his career, Nothing Was the Same. But rather than celebrating his recent coronation on his first post-NWTS verse, Drake warned the rest of hip-hop that his reign was just beginning. Over Mike WiLL Made-It’s thumping beat, he sounds hungry as ever, yet is well aware of his unchallenged place atop the rap game.
5. DJ Khaled — “I’m On One” ft. Drake, Lil Wayne & Rick Ross
Album: We the Best Forever (2011)Producer: T-Minus, Noah “40” Shebib, & Kromatik
Drake already had a flawless streak of guest spots (from “Money to Blow” and “Say Something” in 2009, to “Made Men” and “Right Above It” the following year), but never had he swiped a song out from under the headlining artist as effortlessly as he did on DJ Khaled’s summer anthem. When Drake wraps up his opening verse around the two-minute mark, the song is already his, completely.
4. Kanye West — “All of the Lights (Remix)” ft. Drake, Lil Wayne & Big Sean
Album: N/A (2011)Producer: Kanye West
In August 2010, an early version of “All of Lights” leaked, featuring Drake rapping over Kanye’s triumphant beat. Three months later, however, Drizzy was noticeably absent from the official version. In interviews, Drake stressed that he was okay with Kanye’s decision; his tone on the unofficial remix, however, argued otherwise. Released in March 2011, Drake’s verse on the “All of the Lights” remix serves as our introduction to the tough guy persona he’d tap into later that year on Take Care.
3. French Montana — “Pop That” ft. Drake, Rick Ross & Lil Wayne
Album: Excuse My French (2013)Producer: Lee On the Beats
Fresh off delivering two of the year’s best guest verses, on Rick Ross’ “Stay Schemin’” and 2 Chainz’s “No Lie,” Drake laid claim to summer 2012 on French Montana’s banger, “Pop That.” In hindsight, Drizzy’s scene-stealing verse is a perfect snapshot of where he was at in his life at that exact moment.
2. Migos — “Versace (Remix)” ft. Drake
Album: N/A (2013)Producer: Zaytoven
After owning the previous two summers on the strength of stellar guest spots (2011’s “I’m On One” and 2012’s “Pop That”), Drake did it again in 2013, with an earth-shattering guest verse on the remix to Migos’ then-bubbling hit, “Versace.” Six years on, it’s impossible to measure how impactful Drizzy’s verse was, considering it helped catapult the Atlanta trio to superstardom.
1. Rick Ross — “Stay Schemin’” ft. Drake & French Montana
Album: Rich Forever (2012)Producer: The Beat Bully
With no disrespect to DJ Khaled’s “I’m On One,” Drake’s guest verse on Rick Ross’ “Stay Schemin’” is the moment when he snatched the throne for good. By flaming rap vet Common in the opening bars, The Boy proved that he was about that action. If it’s not the best guest verse of his career, it’s surely the most important.

The Ten Greatest Kanye West Songs Of All Time
Today is Kanye West’s 40th birthday and rather than get Kanye a cake or a pair of extremely expensive sneakers, we here at Boss Hunting decided to celebrate Kanye in the only way we know how, by assessing the greatness of his music.
Don’t expect any mention of that weird Nike diss track or whatever “I am a God” was. No we’re gonna be focusing on the greatness of Kanye. Of course this is only one list and we can’t possibly do every great track justice, but here’s what we ended up with.
Honourable Mentions: Famous, Waves, Lost in the World, Stronger, FourFive Seconds, N***as in Paris, Heartless, I Love Kanye.
Lost in the World, FourFive Seconds and N***as in Paris all get disqualified from the list on the basis that they can’t be entirely classified as ‘Kanye’ songs. Although his collab with Jay-Z is still very much in his style, all of the songs in the top ten come from places that are very recognisably Kanye. Famous gets a mention not only for being a good track, but also for the impact it made on the pop-culture world.
Waves is also an underrated banger, although some of us would’ve liked the final version to sound like how it was initially pitched by Chance the Rapper. Heartless and Stronger also get a mention due to it’s noritory amongst more casual fans of Kanye. I Love Kanye is the best skit on any of his albums and is on here for one reason. It’s funny. It’s quirky. It’s so Kanye.
This section alone could warrant it’s own tribute, with Kanye producing great songs far beyond a ten count. However, here is a carefully considered and likely highly controversial list of the top 10 Kanye West tracks of all time.
10 – Gold Digger → Late Registration (2005)
Possibly Kanye’s most widely popular song, ‘Gold Digger’ became a permanent fixture in clubs around the world due to its eccentric vibe and fun flavour. One should be careful however to fully discount the quality of the track. Even the first thirty seconds are packed with sounds that defined an era in music.
Jamie Foxx’s voice in this track is iconic, leading to a hard breakdown and the introduction of one of the most famous hooks in all of hip-hop.  “I ain’t sayin she a gold digger/ but she ain’t mess’n with no broke n****s” is one of the most recognisable hooks in the modern era of hip hop.
The beat stays consistently upbeat, forcing even the most fridget of listeners to at least tap a foot or bob a head. The song reaches out of the bounds of just the rap game and has the widespread pop appeal that few rap songs were able to have before that time.
While Kanye brings the lyrical heat, there are songs that are significantly more intriguing in manner senses. While this song has gained international popularity and acclaim due to it’s accessible greatness, it fails in some respects to do justice to the type of work Kanye is capable of. For this reason, a ranking in the top ten is more than enough to recognise Kanye’s most famous track.
9 – Love Lockdown → 808s and Heartbreaks (2008)
Ah so we come to the heartbreaking love ballad. A story about the conflict between fame and love. The lyrics of this song are less of a concern here, as nothing blows you away in this regard. No immaculate or majestic stage is set by anything that the vocals say. What makes this song so great is that it relies entirely on the way that the instrumentals work so beautifully together to provoke such deep feelings on the listener’s part.
Rather it’s the slow burn and build that transpires throughout the song. The deep bass drums that belt out from the beginning are so deep it feels like someone is drumming your soul. You can just focus on those drums tapping in your chest. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. It’s the consistent beat that dominates the song and helps define it. Slowly Kanye adds layers of instruments on top, slowly, until one is totally submerged in the very simple message of Kanye’s heartbreak.
Then the outro. No spoken word just a deep forest sounds that build the song to it’s final climax before being striped away to that all too familiar beat from the intro.
8 – Jesus Walks → College Dropout (2004)
Young Kanye lays down some bars in this one. The whole song relies almost entirely on two pillars.
The first, the context to religion and christianity. This shows in the overall tone of the track, with the back up vocals all having a distinct church group style. This juxtaposed with the preaching manner in which Kanye is actually rapping creates a sense that you’re engulfed in a sermon on the Mount of Yeezus.
The second is Kanye coming at everybody trying to make a name for himself.
“You know what the Midwest is? Young and restless
Where restless (niggas) might snatch your necklace
And next these (niggas) might jack your Lexus
Somebody tell these (niggas) who Kanye West is.”
It’s worth noting this is off Kanye’s first album. He’s basically introducing himself to the audience that tells them one very clear message. My name is Kanye, I’m from the city of Chicago and I’m a badass.
7 – Black Skinhead→ Yeezus (2013)
Gritty Kanye is a good Kanye.
This is Kanye’s best gritty song. When the career retrospective is written on Kanye West it’ll say many a thing. It’ll recount a polarising relationship with she who shall not be named, a beef with Taylor Swift and most prominently of all it will mention that Kanye pioneered a style that was adopted by rappers like Chance.
However this is the black box for Kanye’s influence on a harder and more experimental form of rap music.
As he mentions in the song about going 500mph and being out of control. It’s a direct fuck you to everyone on the outside. The public, the media, the scrutiny, all of it.
It’s the Kardashian era Kanye mission statement. I’m going to do whatever I want to do, make whatever music I want and do it whenever I want to do it.
6 – Hey Mama → Late Registration (2005)
This is some great early Kanye. Just simple story telling over a cool beat with some fun lyricism. It’s the kind of song you play when you’re just hanging out with your friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon enjoying the sunshine.
There’s not a lot to hate about this song. It’s an upbeat tribute from a wildly successful son to the mother that helped him on his road to stardom. Even hook is loveable.
“(Hey Mama), I wanna scream so loud for you, cause I’m so proud of you
Let me tell you what I’m about to do, (Hey Mama)
I know I act a fool but, I promise you I’m goin back to school
I appreciate what you allowed for me
I just want you to be proud of me (Hey Mama)”
Deep down inside we all wish we could just straight up shout out our awesome mothers in song and actually pull it off. So for being a fun, well constructed and never boring display by a loud and proud mama’s boy, Hey Mama pulls a sweet sixth spot.
5 – Blood On Leaves → Yeezus (2013)
Blood on Leaves is dark, hard and gritty.
The sample of Nina Simone’s ‘Strange Fruit’ over piano keys to intro the song immediately catches attention before Kanye is even able to spit a line. The repetition of the phrase “blood on leaves” is a staple of the track, and if one wants to truly appreciate the depth of this song, they should check out the original song itself.
This is one of Kanye’s more undeniably provocative tracks. From referencing lynchings in the south during the late 1800s to calling out Instagram frauds, Kanye covers a very broad range of sensitive social issues whilst remaining aggressive throughout. The use of the song ‘Strange Fruit’ as a sample holds a lot of weight in this sense politically. It’s not trying to be a party banger, nor is it a song built for the radio. It’s a track that’s meant to make you think about the world. Usually when artists (and Kanye is guilty of this too) try and do this kind of commentary, they can miss the point entirely, seeming to lecture more than provoke.
This is not the case with Blood on Leaves.
4 – Dark Fantasy → My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010)
Doing this list, however you cut it, teaches you something. Kanye has made some really fucking great music in his career.
With that explicitly stated, we have Dark Fantasy. The fact is that this ranking might not do this song justice. It has all the great aspects of an all-time great Kanye track.
The intro feels like a kids story turned dark right at the end. The hook is amazingly done, providing insight into the way Ye sees himself. The top, better yet, the very top. He’s actually asking if it actually gets any higher than where he is. All performed with beautiful vocals that seem more heavenly than arrogant.
Then Kanye spits bars on bars on bars on top of a very old school rap beat. Just Kanye performing some verbal acrobatics in a way that resonates with hip-hop fans of any era. It’s this kind of performing that puts him all-time lists with other great pure rappers like Nas.
The fact is that this track would be number one a lot of lists if it were made by another artist. But alas, Kanye’s discography is a lot like the 2017 Golden State Warriors. Three can only be three in a Big Three. Sorry Klay Thompson, and sorry Dark Fantasy.
3 – Touch the Sky → Late Registration (2005)
Along with the aforementioned Gold Digger and Jesus Walks, this song is among Kanye’s most famous. Like the others, it grabs your attention from the start, giving you only four small beats to prepare for a vibrant experience blossoming with energy and optimism.
The reason this song gets a higher place on this list is the incredible interaction between the orchestra, Kanye’s choice of tone and even a strong Lupe Fiasco feature. Kanye also puts forth one of his stronger performances from a verbal gymnastics perspectives. Some Kanye songs you can kind of keep up with lyrically. Other than the chorus, anything Kanye vocalises on this track is pretty tough to follow for longer than a few seconds.
For being a nice blend between mainstream hit, pure rap skill and that dash of Kanye flavour, Touch The Sky opens up the top three.
2 – Runaway → My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010)
Runaway will certainly be one of Kanye’s greatest career accomplishments. The opening piano keys are hauntingly beautiful, consuming the listener with confusing but real emotions from the very beginning. It’s the anticipation that get’s you, like in a horror film when you’re waiting for the jump scare. Then the different note rings in you ear and you feel it. That’s just the first twenty seconds of a nine minute emotional odyssey.
The song sends chills down your spine from the start and is best consumed in a dark room with your eyes closed. It’s what Kanye West does better than many artists in history. Then the song actually starts and it has an effect, a personal one at that.
Kanye is unravelling himself in song. He acknowledges his arrogance, the fact that he is not perfect whilst also admitting himself to be a perfectionist. It’s a raw self reflection where it seems that Ye struggles both with a pursuit of perfection in his life but also knows ultimately that nothing can remain totally without flaw forever.
It’s Kanye’s perception on the fleeting nature of beauty and love. It feels so intimate all the way through, the kind of connection the song makes is the kind you only experience sparingly in life.
Then there’s the outro. An over three minute voyage. Just auto tuned and indecipherable vocals over the haunting but classically beautiful instrumentals. Much in the way one can become entranced with the mystery of a Frank Ocean track, the outro provides and incredible conclusion to a perfect song.
1 – Ultralight Beam → The Life of Pablo (2016)
There are some great tracks that have been discussed in this piece and even more that didn’t even get a honorable mention. Some club bangers. Some heartfelt ballads. Some joyous proclamations of the joy of life. Some angry protests. With the close study of every track and skit on every album Ye has ever released, there is an undeniable truth.
Ultralight Beam is the greatest track Kanye West has ever made.
I understand the opposing argument. The Life of Pablo as an album has many flaws. The Kanye you get in TLOP overall is not the best Kanye we have ever been fortunate to experience. No song on that album had the mainstream acclaim of other songs. Nor did it universally get approved by every diehard hip-hop fan. TLOP is an average Kanye West album, mainly because it has too many songs that feel like filler. Whilst I don’t agree with all these assertions, I do understand them.
But none of those arguments have anything to do with Ultralight Beam.
It feels heavenly, divine, omnipotent and enlightening. I still remember driving around with my sister when I first heard it. My heart melted with the transition from the girl talking about God to those incredible chords and vocals. The instrumentals are insane, undeniably some of Kanye’s best producing work.
Then the choir hits. The choir is beautiful. The choir is exactly what it says it is. A god dream.
A deep beat, soul melting chords and an inspiring choir all collide to touch a very sensitive part of your very being you never knew. Kelly Price’s voice is the definition of musical beauty. All of this all time great Kanye work builds to what clinches the title for best Kanye track. The best verse of 2016 performed by Chance the Rapper. There’s too much about this verse that is great to limit it to one part. The song built perfectly to that voice, with those words over that beat.
If you’re still not totally convinced, listen to the last twenty seconds of that song a few times. Listen to it from beginning to end by yourself and really listen. That build over a song to the incredibly beautiful ending is what Kanye has thrived on his whole career. This is his greatest example of it.
It’s okay to disagree. The denial is expected. I sought out another answer. A great spiritual journey was undertaken. Many a possibility pondered. But in the end, there can only be one.

5 Demos that Are Way Better Than the Final Release
5 Demos that Are Way Better Than the Final Release: via LANDR Blog
A demo is an incredibly powerful musical tool—it’s the seed of a song.
A good demo means there’s a good idea to begin with—which will always be more important than studio trickery. You can throw any amount of fancy production at a lousy demo, it will most likely still be a lousy track.
The raw emotion captured in a demo is sometimes so unique that it doesn’t need much more. A demo can be so awesome that it’s even better than the fully polished track! In fact, taking a good demo and trying to ‘finish’ it can compromise the quality of the demo in the first place.
Some artists just need a mic and a guitar or a simple beat to make a legendary song. Every song on this list is proof that sometimes your first take is the best take, and that demos deserve to be mastered and released too!
Here are our 5 favorite song demos that beat the original by far. What’s yours?
1. Velvet Underground — All Tomorrow’s Parties
The Peel Slowly and See (1995) box set is a godsend for the hard core Velvet Undergound fans.
The standout is without a doubt the demo for “All Tomorrow’s Parties”—the iconic song written by Lou Reed for The Velvet Underground & Nico’s 1967 debut album. The demo is an 18-minute session recorded in a New York loft on Ludlow Street.
The demo shows a strong folk background and undeniable Bob Dylan influence that isn’t as directly obvious in the album version.
Unlike the final version on which Nico sings the lead, this version features Lou Reed on lead vocals—alongside John Cale and Sterling Morrison singing harmonies. The demo shows a strong folk background and undeniable Bob Dylan influence that isn’t as directly obvious in the album version.
The most charming part of “All Tomorrow’s Parties” demo is perhaps how relatable Lou Reed’s interjections are. Peppered with swearing, these raw takes show that even the greats mess up and need to start over!
2. Michael Jackson — Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough
“Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough” is Michael Jackson’s first Billboard top hit. The home-recorded demo version showcases Jackson’s musical genius and quirk in full bloom.
Is that someone blowing in a glass bottle? This demo contains an array of strange musical elements that make it way more intriguing than the final version. What would it look like if Jackson released a “This is where I recorded and mixed the album and all the gear I used” photo? My guess is that it would have involved quite a few kitchen items.
Is that someone blowing in a glass bottle? This demo contains an array of strange musical elements that make it way more intriguing than the final version.
The final version of “Don’t Stop” was produced by Quincy Jones and Jackson, and got him a Grammy in 1980. But sadly, the final version was released with the kitchen utensils left on the cutting room floor.
3. Drake — Fall For Your Type
“Fall for Your Type” was originally recorded by Canadian rapper and producer Drake for his 2010 debut Thank Me Later. Drake wrote this slow jam with Noah “40” Shebib and Noel Campbell. A different version of the song ended up on Jamie Foxx’s album Best Night of My Life.
Raw and no frills, Drake’s version of this slow jam delivers what could be one of his most moving vocal performances.
Raw and no frills, Drake’s version of this slow jam delivers what could be one of his most moving vocal performances.
In Jamie Foxx’s version, the auto-tune is more present and the vocals less convincing. Foxx’s version fails to bring the emotion that Drake conveys singing the same chorus. And let’s be real, Drake is still the best part of Foxx’s version. Sorry Jamie!
4. Feist — The Water
The Red Demos is a selection of home recorded and self-produced demos by Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist Feist. Recorded in the summer of 2001, most of these tracks eventually made onto her successful debut album Let It Be (2004) and other records.
The demo of song “The Water” is a beautiful jam that features guitars and percussion that were stripped away from the final version appearing on The Remainder (2007).
The demo has an undeniably enveloping vibe, with lush guitar arrangements.
The album version of the track is a more introspective song, with a minimal jazz arrangement including cello, trumpet and a focus on the piano. Feist’s dynamic vocal performance—easily going from fragile to powerful—shines best in the album version of “The Water.” But the demo has an undeniably enveloping vibe, with lush guitar arrangements.
It’s almost a tie here between demo and original, but the demo definitely shows why “The Water” is an incredible song and Feist an amazing performer.
5. Amy Winehouse — Rehab
Do you know the feeling when you’ve just heard a great song too many times and you start to forget how good it is?
Listening to the demo of Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab,” I remembered how much I loved (and still love) it. It’s less produced, the sound is more raw and the instrumentation is simpler—it’s an iconic ol’ rockabilly tune. That soulful vintage feel shines through, and so does her incredible vocal performance.
But what makes it a timeless song is the authentic message and feeling that Winehouse poured into it—a quality that shines through more in the demo than in the final version.
Of course Mark Ronson’s production on the album version of “Rehab” is great—it really makes it a top hit. But what makes it a timeless song is the authentic message and feeling that Winehouse poured into it—a quality that shines through more in the demo than in the final version.
Demo Let’s Go
Listening to demos shows you how powerful and important your first ideas are during the creative process.
Musicianship isn’t about the flash—it’s about the emotion. These 5 demos prove that production never beats substance.
Demos contain the raw and real initial spark of a composition. They tell the story of a song in a way that finished tracks can’t. So never delete your demos! In fact, think about mastering and releasing them! Your demos are a vital part of your music journey.

This Fall, we are counting down the 100 best tracks of the 2000s with a new article every Monday. To learn more about the project and why the 2000s were amazing for music, click here.
This week, we keep the countdown going strong with positions 40 to 31. This means that 70 tracks have been revealed from the list so far, 69 of which are available at the bottom of the article in a Spotify playlist.
Navigation
Intro   100-91   90-81   80-71   70-61   60-51   50-41   40-31   30-21   20-11   10-1
Tumblr media
40. Radiohead - Reckoner
Like many songs released by Radiohead in its later era, Reckoner started as a completely different song, years before being first put down on wax. The single, which helped to cement In Rainbows as yet another masterpiece in the grand family of Radiohead albums, mixes a freezing cold performance by drummer Phil Selway with gentle guitar strums and Thom Yorke’s velvet-like delivery to create one of the band’s most quietly danceable tracks.
Tumblr media
39. Interpol - Obstacle 1
With interlocking guitars reminiscent of Marquee Moon, Interpol tore its way out of post-9/11 New York into the rock stardom world with Obstacle 1. All dressed in black, the band’s members had a dark, yet grand single in their hands that would shake alternative rock and push it into a new direction. Yet, no matter how angular and mathematics the instruments worked, the emotions conveyed were pure, thanks in no small part to Paul Banks’ irresistible presence.
Tumblr media
38. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great
Written after the death of his therapist, Someone Great showed that James Murphy was more than ready to slack off the self-conscious centric lyrics of his début and to open up about other people. Here, LCD Soundsystem gives a touching attention to details both with the light glockenspiel-like touches that help sweeten the pill of the tragic story of the lyrics. And somehow, the whole number is still easily danceable. Go figure.
Tumblr media
37. Kanye West feat. Jamie Foxx - Gold Digger
Arguably his biggest hit, Gold Digger made Kanye West a reference for party music in the 2000’s and helped to show that he was not gonna suffer the sophomore album slump. As always with Ye, the track is built upon a vocal sample, this time by Jamie Foxx soulfully covering Ray Charles. Add to the mix some seriously bouncing production from A-Trak and a handful of humorous wordplay from West and you’ve got a guaranteed dancefloor filler.
Tumblr media
36. Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
The Middle sends a message of hope in its chorus to confused teenagers. But, after being dropped by their label two years before its release, no one needed it more than the members of Jimmy Eat World themselves. With a hook as big as the house party in its music video, The Middle became an anthem to grasp on when on the edge of falling apart. In 2001, no other band could give a better advice to teenagers than “Live right now/Just be yourself/It doesn’t matter if it’s good enough for someone else”.
Tumblr media
35. Bat For Lashes - Daniel
On her most straightforward pop moment ever, Natasha Khan goes back to her early teenage years and sings to her first crush - who also happens to be a fictional character from Karate Kid. But with her velvety voice and ghost-like presence, Bat For Lashes seems to be taken from an even more fantastic world, creating with Daniel a dreamlike landscape of innocence that she can call home.
Tumblr media
34. Sufjan Stevens - Chicago
The city of Chicago offered Sufjan Stevens many breaks from his hometown in his youth, which is the main inspiration to this road trip essential single. Chicago finds Sufjan reflecting on his past trips and adventures that found him leaving for Illinois and New York with peace and serenity, helped by a folk orchestra for a joyous six minutes runtime.
Tumblr media
33. Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes
It’s easy to be pretentious when you’re trying to be an indie artist, something Santigold vowed to never do as early as on her second single. With L.E.S. Artistes, the singer then known as “Santogold” blasts the Lower East Side gang of New York and its wannabe hipsters, all while being hip as fuck. By crushing those who tried too hard to be cool, Santigold ended up reigning as the coolest chick in New York for a hot minute.
Tumblr media
32. Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control
Alternating between funky bass lines in its verses and aggressive, discordant chords in its chorus, Standing In The Way Of Control shares as much with disco than with punk. The mix makes sense after all: the song was written in reaction to an amendment the Bush administration tried to pass that could render same-sex marriage unconstitutional. With one style being iconic in gay communities and another being a symbol of defiance and anti-establishment, Gossip had every right to be proud of the bomb they were holding in their hands.
Tumblr media
31. The Killers - Mr Brightside
The Killers were more than ready to shake shit up when they came to the music scene in 2003 with their timeless Mr Brightside. The band’s début single introduced them with an emotional buildup of a verse filled with regrets and frustration, leading to one of the catchiest, biggest choruses of the century. More than a decade later, it remains a go-to crowd pleaser, as exemplified by the fact the song is still charting in the UK in 2017.

FILM 1701: BABY DRIVER
TRIVIA: In an introduction from Edgar Wright, he revealed that there was little to no CGI or green screen used to film the car chase sequences. The driving is all practically done.
The tracking shot in the beginning of the movie where Baby gets coffee took 28 takes. The 21st take is the one used in the movie.
Whenever Edgar Wright had Jamie Foxx and Kevin Spacey in the same shot, he would whisper to a colleague: "Double Oscar shot!"
The extensive collection of sunglasses and iPods that Baby owns were not bought by him; they were taken from cars he stole. In an interview, Edgar Wright said: 'If he has been stealing cars since he was 12, the main thing he would have inherited from these stolen cars are people's sunglasses and iPods.'
According to Edgar Wright, each script sent to the main actors that are wanted for their respective roles includes an Ipod that contains list of songs that is to be played (arranged in specific order) while reading a particular scene for the movie in order to emphasize the tone.
Edgar Wright had been sitting on this idea for a film for many years. His first use of it was a music video he directed for British electronic duo Mint Royale and their track "Blue Song". The video stars Noel Fielding as a music-loving getaway driver for a group of bank robbers, one of whom is Wright's regular Nick Frost. A clip from the video is featured in the film when channels are being flipped through on the television in Baby's apartment.
On the first day of filming, Jamie Foxx watched Jon Hamm on the monitor and uttered to himself "he handsome."
In almost every scene where no music is playing, you can hear a slight ringing in the background (the sound of Baby's tinnitus).
Barbra Streisand's experience with tinnitus was the basis for a scene in the movie where Jamie Foxx's character is required to say, "Do I look like I know a f*cking thing about Barbra f*cking Streisand?" Knowing Barbra is close friends with Jamie in real life (who knew?), Edgar was worried about how she would react. Jamie's response to Edgar's worries was "Barbra's gangsta." In 2016 Jamie Foxx sang a duet with Streisand on her ENCORE album.
When Baby is flipping through the channels near the beginning of the film, several lines of dialogue from different movies can be heard ("you are so beautiful," "how's that working out for you?" and "we're partners. There's nothing that matters to me more than our friendship"). Each one of these lines appears later in the film as a line of dialogue.
The first R-rated movie to be given permission to show footage from a Disney film (Monsters, Inc. (2001)). Pete Docter, the director of "Monsters, Inc.", is given a 'special thanks' credit as a result.
The opening credits use a one take shot of Baby walking to buy coffee and then walking back, reminiscent of the famous opening of Shaun of the Dead (2004), where Shaun walks to the shop and then back home in one shot (which is later repeated once the zombie outbreak has begun).
Edgar Wright started to work on this film in 1995, but didn't finish the script until 2011, and the film until 2017. However, he received the advance for it in 2007. He introduced the world premiere of the film at SXSW by thanking his producer for not suing him for this.

Details: Marsha Ambrosius, Eric Benet [/tab] [tab title=”Tickets: “]   $35.00  [/tab] [tab title=”Bio: “]Marsha Ambrosius (born 8 August 1977) is an English singer-songwriter from Liverpool, England. She embarked on her musical career as a member of Floetry. Ambrosius later released her debut solo album Late Nights & Early Mornings in March 2011.
In 2000, the duo travelled to the United States to perform on the poetry circuit. After frequenting spoken word/poetry spots in Atlanta such as Yin Yang Poets’ Cafe (to positive reviews), they moved on to Philadelphia. There they met Darren “Limitless” Henson and Keith “Keshon” Pelzer of DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Touch Of Jazz studio and began recording. She also worked with Michael Jackson – she composed and sang as back-vocal the song “Butterflies”, from the album “Invincible”, released in 2001 and in 2002 it was publicated a single version of this song. In the same year, they signed with DreamWorks Records and released their debut album Floetic, which featured the singles “Floetic”, “Say Yes” and “Getting Late”.
Ambrosius has been featured on many songs including Styles P’s “I’m Black”; The Game’s “Start from Scratch” and “Why You Hate The Game.” (also featuring Nas); Busta Rhymes’ “Get You Some” and “Cocaina”; Nas’ “Hustlers” (also featuring The Game); and Hi-Tek’s “Music for Life” and Jamie Foxx’s “Freak’in Me”. The group has also collaborated with Earth, Wind & Fire on their album, Illumination, on the track “Elevated”. She collaborated once again with Slum Village called “Cloud 9”. In 2009, she guested on Wale’s “Diary”.
In summer 2009, Ambrosius was approached by numerous record labels offering her a solo deal after a long-awaited performance at NYC’s SOB’s where a sold out crowd gathered to a show accompanied by The Roots and DJ Aktive. In December 2009, Ambrosius signed to J Records and her solo debut Late Nights & Early Mornings was released on 1 March 2011. “Hope She Cheats On You (With A Basketball Player)” was released as the album’s first single on 13 August 2010. The song charted on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and peaked at no. 22. “Far Away” was released as the album’s second single on 7 December 2010. The album would debut at no. 1 on the US “Billboard” Hot R&B Charts and no. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 200 behind Adele and ahead of Mumford & Sons the first time in over 20 years that British Acts had topped the US charts.
Ambrosius won the Centric Award at the BET Awards of 2011. She was also nominated for Best Female R&B Artist at the BET Awards 2012.
Ambrosius won the Record of The Year (Ashford & Simpson Songwriters Award) at the 2011 Soul Train Awards for the song “Far Away”.
In August 2011, RCA Music Group announced it was disbanding J Records along with Arista Records and Jive Records. With the shutdown, Ambrosius (and all other artists previously signed to these three labels) will release her future material on the RCA Records brand.
Ambrosius released her second studio album, titled Friends & Lovers, in July 2014. Ambrosius received two MOBO Award nominations for the album. In 2015 Ambrosius received a nomination for Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “As,” a collaboration she recorded with Anthony Hamilton for The Best Man Holiday.
