A mellanoid Advanced Steam tank engine, for use in shunting, industrial shortlines, and branch lines. This particular class has variants designed for burning coal, oil, or biofuels. Note the large covered fuel bunker atop the saddle tank. Like most Advanced Steam locos, it has compound cylinders to expand the steam twice for more efficient operation.
The above loco is pictured with the same livery used by the Slaibsgloth Coal Mine engines, so this might indeed be one of those. However, here are some alternate liveries for fun.

Mentor & mentee stuff sketch with Raen and Zohar, inspired by my interaction with @whirligig-girl.
Raen is stretching their arm to give Zohar a headpat, which is why it is so long.
Bonus: Q!Zohar has a Mellanoid Slime form that is weirdly similar to Raen... might draw later.

We--Are the Mellanoid Slimes... Gargle, Amethirst, and Swirl. And Steven!
The gems here are now Mellanoid Slime Worms, the same species as Eaurp Guz and Slamtha Uzgoel (my Star Trek Lower Decks OCs) and Murf (Star Trek: Prodigy).
As for Steven? He's a human, but his blood and some of his vital organs are a clone of his dead slimegirl mom.

I hope we get more episodes surrounding individual characters in season 3. What's Dal's entire backstory? What's Jankom's? Will there be more Mellanoid Slime Worms?
C'mon, Canon, give it to me!

The lighting here is fantastic, I was blown away when I saw it on Artfight the other day. I love the way you drew her!
Jesti Quymyn is a mellanoid aquatic astrogator in the United Mellanus Astronaut Corps. (she/they/any). There's not many aquatics in the United Mellanus Space Program, so she's rather a pioneer.
Tumblr media
here she is on an aquatic Starfleet ship for some reason.
(minor nitpick: the patch on her chest should look like this. not a big problem, not a starfleet delta shield, especially since the red horseshoe isn't visible on the reference)

30 Days of Prodigy, day 19: Away Mission
Miral Paris peeked around the side of a storage container as Dal, Rok-Tahk, and Murf boarded the Flyer-A, carrying supplies for the away mission. The ship was nearing the suspected coordinates of the spatial rift that they were looking for and Aunt Kathryn Vice Admiral Janeway had ordered them to go down to the planet and scan for signs of temporal activity.
Miral was tired of being cooped up on the ship. She wanted some fresh air and adventure! Besides, she thought with an eye roll that would give her mother’s a run for its money, she was certain that if those kids could go on an away mission, she could too. They had never even heard of Starfleet a year ago. Miral was born on a starship.
While the rest of the team was distracted with trying to fit the large scanning equipment into the cargo section of the Flyer, Miral saw her chance and she tiptoed onto the shuttle and ducked behind one of the auxiliary chairs in the forward section. The others took no notice whatsoever. Ha! Easy! thought Miral proudly. Who says Klingons can’t be stealthy? (In fact, Lieutenant Vorik said that, just the other day when he caught Miral playing hide and seek with Toby the targ in engineering.)
The rest of the crew finally boarded the shuttle and Miral held her breath and squeezed her eyes shut as Murf did the security checks. As long as he didn’t find her before they took off, she’d be home free. The engines roared to life and Miral dared to open her eyes… only to find Murf staring right at her inquisitively. She silently raised a finger to her lips and her eyes pleaded with Murf to keep quiet. The Mellanoid creature cocked his head to the side and made a gesture with his hand as if to say “I’ve got my eyes on you” and then slowly backed away to his seat.
Murf sat at his console and finally faced front, but he kept whipping his head around to make sure that Miral hadn’t moved. Miral had a sneaking suspicion that this was not going to turn out the way she had planned.
Her suspicions were confirmed when she felt the tingle of a transporter beam and suddenly found herself huddled in the middle of her quarters.
Her combadge beeped and Rok-Tahk’s cheerful voice filled the room. “Sorry Miral! Maybe next time, if the Admiral says it's ok!”
“Maybe next time I won’t trust that dumb slime worm,” Miral grumbled as she picked herself up off the floor and left her quarters to look for something else to do. Maybe she’d scare Lieutenant Vorik. That would show him who’s stealthy.

Moopsy is cuter, but it WILL mindlessly and horrifically kill you without even letting you cuddle it first, so what's the point?
Tumblr media
Murf is pretty cute, very cuddly, AND will keep you safe!
But only if you're nice to Rok-Tahk. They come as a set, so it's 2 cuties for the price of 1! If you're not nice to Rok, frankly, you deserve whatever you get.
Tumblr media
Bonus: if it comes to a fight, Murf the security officer definitely wins. He has no bones to drink because he's indestructible. Murf will straight up eat Moopsy whole, and barf him up later
Alright, let's settle this with democracy...
Feel free to leave propaganda for either of these floppy little guys who could kill you without a second thought

Anika and Liz are rolling up to a starbase in a stolen starship, putting on our un-earned cadet uniforms and discussing the new episode of Star Trek: Prodigy and children in Star Trek in general!
The chase is on!
Lieutenant jg Barniss Frex is THE WORST
Starfleet needs to start recruiting career bureaucrats who LIKE being assigned to sit in an office in space and do paperwork. Like … us!
We don’t actually think Dal is a Janeway/Paris salamander baby, but we have a lot of thoughts about how it would be great if he was
It would be terrible if the Diviner has done something to Gwyn to also make her a weapon. Absolutely awful. We wouldn’t enjoy that one little bit. Honest.
Rok-Tahk is safe to learn and make mistakes
If kids go from “Hey, Murf is a Mellanoid slime worm, let’s watch the only episode of Star Trek where those are mentioned,” they’ll watch “Coming of Age”, the episode where Wesley fails to get into the Academy (and that’s okay). Coincidence? Maybe!
Liz wants to be happy about finally getting the J/C hug she’s been waiting for since she was 14, but Robert Beltran’s making it hard
Anika has compiled some stats about children in Star Trek generally, and they are fascinating
Like, TOS had FOUR episodes about kids taking over the ship! Out of nine across the franchise, and that’s not counting Prodigy!
In fact, you can kind of track social attitudes towards children via their presence in Star Trek, which makes it alarming that SNW keeps killing them

Eaurp Guz's roughly 1:30 scale live-steam model of Slaibsgloth Coal Railroad No.32, a ~1.6 meter gauge 2-8-8-2 garratt steam locomotive built on planet Mellanus in (earth-)year 2346 and retired in 2379 (two years ago) for service bringing coal carriages from the coal pits up to the interchange at the Glooiw & North Eastern. It is unusual for a coal burning steam engine to remain in revenue service--the majority that remained in use after the development of Diesel-Hydraulics were decommissioned with nuclear-powered railway electrification in the 2360s, and the ones that remained were mostly converted to oil burning. The Slaibsgloth steam engines meanwhile persisted right up until the closure of the coal mine. Glooiw & North Eastern has acquired the 40 locomotives. Their fates are uncertain but railway preservation groups remain optimistic.
When Guz first came aboard the Cerritos she was overworking herself constantly, which lead to her being so tired that she was leaving residues on the consoles and generally doing sloppier work. It turned out that Guz had been working double shifts, and when Billups found out he put a stop to that. That's when Guz turned to a hobby she'd done a lot of before joining starfleet--model rocketry. Armed with far more advanced tools than she'd had on Mellanus, she made accurate working model replicas of real historical prewarp spacecraft from a variety of planets and would fly them in real space whenever possible.
Eventually, she also found a new appreciation for her childhood love of trains, and her model-making skills and tools translated well to model railroading as well. She has a little shelf layout in storage that she occasionally tinkers with, and she runs large scale model trains on the holodeck. She could run full-scale holographic trains on the holodeck too of course, but it wouldn't be nearly as satisfying. And then there's the 1:5600 scale BM-gauge railroad she's building on a microscope slide! (Bµ gauge is "Byte micrometer" gauge or a track spacing of 256 µm)
Guz eventually wants to build a roughly 1:80 scale modular layout of the Slaibsgloth Coal Mine, with smaller scale electric-powered models of the Slaibsgloth coal-burning steam engines and enough track to wrap around a room and give them a good run, but unless she can rally support for a Cerritos chapter of the Starfleet Rail Transport Modelling Club or she can get her own crew quarters, it's a pipe dream--or maybe something for her retirement.
Replicators and advanced computer aided design tools reduce the amount of time it takes to get modelling projects done by whatever factor is desired. Technically Guz could probably replicate fully assembled working models as long as they fit in the replicator bed, but where's the fun in that? But she's still only got so much time in an off-shift, and doing it 'properly,' scratch-built using machine tools like 'real' modellers on Mellanus, or manually defining all of the geometry in a CAD program like modellers on Earth, would take too much time.
see also: alt versions of the locomotive.
