Movie Review - Abigail [2024]
Tumblr media
Abigail is a horror film that was released on April 19th, 2024. It was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are more commonly known as Radio Silence. They have been behind many great modern horror projects, such as Ready or Not. The writers of this film were Stephen Shields and Guy Busick.
I have been looking forward to seeing this movie since I first saw the trailer. With a small ensemble cast of actors I adore and a singular main setting, this film had everything it needed to be one of my favorites.
There was plenty to love about this movie. I already mentioned the setting. Every time a single-location movie takes place in a big old-money mansion, I am hooked. It allows for so many different little elements and pathways through different areas. It allows for some amazing variety to something that could be incredibly boring. Another element I loved was the sound design. I don't know why I needed to listen to Frank (Dan Stevens) vomit for a minute straight, but at least it sounded good.
Throughout the film there is an impressive talent for balancing comedy and tension. Sammy (Kathryn Newton) and Peter (Kevin Durand) both carry this dynamic for most of the film with a number of background conversations. I also want to note Peter saying Wrinkles instead of Rickles (William Catlett) as another great example of this. This balance is exemplified by some lines during different fight scenes, such as Joey's (Melissa Barrera) "I'm doing my best, Abigail" and Frank saying something along the lines of "Holy fuck, she's fucking flying!" There were multiple moments where I had to just pause for a second while I giggled.
That balance was really just a smaller highlight of how great the chemistry was between characters and how well their personalities were defined. Even early on, each character was distinct. This is detrimental when looking at a film with a small cast.
The gore and effects were absolutely brilliant throughout the film. To my knowledge, most- if not all- of them were almost completely practical. It was so impressive that I was almost getting angry about it. I wish I could name one standout scene, but there really wasn't one. It was all so well done.
I also want to highlight the performance of Alisha Weir. While everyone in the cast was incredibly talented, Weir's performance had so many elements and nuances to it that it needs to be talked about. She does a nearly perfect job at portraying this calculated hunter. Abigail isn't some mindlessly hungry girl; she likes the chase. It's like the most intense version of the most dangerous game. I loved it. The dance sequences throughout the movie are an example of that. Her dancing with Dean's (Angus Cloud) body and using Sammy as a puppet to do that dance in the middle of the movie just showed how much fun she has when she's doing this. Weir was an absolute star at playing this character and I genuinely cannot wait to see what she does in the future.
Now, while there were many elements that I loved, that does not mean that this movie is without flaws. On a smaller scale, I don't see the value in the appearance of Abigail's father. I understand what the goal with the scene was, but there simply not enough for me to emotionally connect to feel like that goal was fulfilled. Which was a shame because it was the last scene of the movie. On a much larger scale, I don't love that the twist was so heavily advertised before the movie's release. The characters don't find out what Abigail is until almost halfway through the movie. This feels a bit dragged out considering most of the audience likely knew from the moment that they pressed play.
Overall, I found Abigail to be a very funny and chaotic film filled to the brim with amazing gore and really well-done characters. The shortcomings of the film have little impact on the overall quality of the film. If you are a fan of Radio Silence's other projects like Ready or Not or other horror-comedy movies like Bodies Bodies Bodies, then this movie may very well be right up your alley.

All of the camera work in this film is either stationary or very smooth.
Flashing Lights: 3/10. Motion Sickness: 1/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: This film is very bloody and gory. The opening sequence depicts the kidnapping of a child. One woman vomits suddenly after discovering a gory scene. A man vomits blood with several seconds of body language warning beforehand.

Listening to coinstar by the growlers and thinking about mel so hard I get nauseous
Ridiculous stream of conscious in the tags apologies but not really
#it speaks#white woman moment#its really funny bc like. its very much a her to jfk song#(everyones favorite problematic short king)#but she looks at him with uhhh#like heres this kid(hes 28) standing on the precipice o what she had been all those years ago#but he KNOWS it she didnt know she thought she had mold poisoning from her shitty apartment until she died#and she is projecting so much onto him. which is part of why she doesn't respect him at all#'im a sucker just like you'#its also funny bc like. it is Too Late for Phoenix.also its scary that theyre hungry bc as far as she knows death avatars arent supposed 2 b#but also theyre the first one shes met. and Phoenix is kind of just scary in general.#but being around those two is like. almost flashbacky(jfk also reminds her alot of her ex aroun that age tho audreys dad was Worse)#(she never met him but heard enough stories about the guy and i mean. he fed her to the hunt on purpose.#i dont think jorges dad wanted what was going to happen to happen)#part of why she texted her so fast tbh. not that they hadnt talked at all since the divorce.#i thinj they talked. not alot bc mel WAS in europe and international data rates pre smartphone age oof ouch#and also like. they did irrevocably harm eachother physically and mentally but they do both careeeeee#tho. i do not think melissa wouldve ever dropped everything to go help audrey like audrey would and did for her.#(girl who runs away from her problems x girl who is a dog)#auuughhhhhh#she really is my chew toy.#i also think alot about her sky mafia years but those r fun and sexy little secrets for me#as much as i love Basil's motw campaign i do with it was easier to unentangle her from tma lore.#bc like. normal vampire works well but it loses so much of the flavor. various sea beasts keep the flavor but loose the morality.#for pathfinder if i were to redo her id go with storm oracle and then spec into kineticist. which does work Ok I Guess.#but like. even that its still not what i want#one scene that probably would've never happened in game but i thought ahout if we ever went back to the item storage or maybe a wierd thrift#shop or something was to like. have her come across a violin and pick it up and make it scream horribly. like. really concentrate on making#it make the worst noise imaginable. shes trying to reach that wonderful horrible music avatars mention alot in the earlier seasons#and then realizes everyone else Hates That So Much and jokingly play one of the devil's riffs from tdwdg. tbh i should finally draw that

ABIGAIL (2024)
💁‍♀️Strong Female Lead
Tumblr media
This movie mashes up a bunch of fun tropes: the 24 hour trope, the locked house/no way out trope, the hunted becomes the hunter trope, the perfect strangers trope, the empathetic struggling mother as the lead character trope, etc, etc… There are a few things that really stuck out in a bad way to me, but in that same breath there were a few things that really hung on as being great scene additions to the horror genre.
⭐⭐⭐.5
Y'all, I got a little bit of beef with this movie. The premise of people constantly working for a high powered vampire in an elaborate ruse to fake kidnap his (actually) adult daughter, have her taken to her special meal house, and then let her have her shenanigans? Well, I call shenanigans. That and I felt the way that they used sunlight just seemed too easy, lest we forget the moon is just a big white ball reflecting the sun back to earth, so how come that’s fine? Even human beings with allergies to the sun cannot go out at night or even be in indirect sunlight. Shenanigans number two.
Tumblr media
And the final shenanigans before I praise the film, the fact that they impressed upon us that the mansion they were in was random and that it had nothing to do with Abigail or her family. There was so much lore in the house that was just skipped over because they couldn't have just said “this is their summer home.” You find out halfway through the movie it is her house, but by then all the (creeping) creepiness is gone because you already know Abby is a killer queen!
I heard someone describe this film as Scooby Doo meets Clue and while I don't quite see the Clue aspect (because what mystery was there really, other than how far they could/would stretch the plot) I do feel like the Scooby Doo comparison was apt. Only problem is, if anyone was Scooby it was that goofy guy who got ate right away, so… 😿 (just kidding)
Tumblr media
I think the best players in the movie had to be Sammy, Peter, and Abigail herself. Sammy, bless her heart, went through the worst in all this though which brings me to my favorite part of the film: The Body Pool. Sammy somehow crashed through a door and fell into a swimming pool absolutely filled with corpses. The consistency of the “water” that was floating around her and the bodies is… viscous. As a viewer I was acutely aware that the Jamba Juice from that pool got into her mouth which might have been worse than being submerged in so much death. Tasting it. When asked how many people there were in the pool, she just screamed, which was the correct answer. You know she has to absolutely reek for the rest of the film, right? Well it doesn't matter much, because Sammy gets bit by Abby when she tries to save one of the other kidnappers from Abby. And then the puppetry begins.
Tumblr media
Sammy and Peter just had a nice friendship moment, so the stage is set for Abigail to turn Sammy and somehow control her mind, make her dance, and then stab Peter to death. Then to add insult to injury Sammy is full on exploded by the sun. No remains. Wild. RIP Sammy, you had it really fucking rough in this one.
We get to the final fight and it turns out Abby isn't as bad as we thought, she's just very old and very short, both things are bound to make you cranky (perhaps enough to kill several dozen folks and put them in your indoor swimming pool, who can say?). Turns out, one of the kidnappers was a bad guy (shocking, a bad kidnapper?). Abs and the Final Girl teamed up to kill Toothy Terry and barely did (girl power!). And then Daddy arrives (yikes) and Abigail can barely get him to not kill Final Girl (“but daddy, we've already named her Final Girl!”)
Tumblr media
The ending really made me want justice for Abigail (and Sammy). Abby was clearly a sad and tortured thing who then tortured others. If her father hadn't created her (turned her into a vampire that is) she wouldn't have done this. She wouldn’t have been capable of it. Part of me doubts they could make it a whole movie but I would love to see Abigail fight her father (and win, of course).
Tumblr media
PS the “strong female lead” is for Sammy and Abigail.

The Mummy (M) 28K (12/?) by killmesoftly_s
Inspired by my all time favorite movie, The Mummy (1999) When Scott, -Stiles’ step brother and best friend-brings him a key found within a Pharohs crypt depicting the curse of the infamous city; Hamunaptra, a trip is set. It’s in Cairo that the rugged and frustratingly handsome Derek Hale, who is the only living man to know how to find the city of the dead, promises to take him. Death is only the beginning and Stiles is ready for his adventure, stupid hunters and curses be damned. Rated mature for one detailed sex scene.
Autumn comes when you're not yet done (NR) 5.6K (1/1) by Lord_potato
The wolf (Canis lupus) is a mammal of the canine family. Biologically speaking, it is the same species as the domestic dog. The wolf is the largest canine living in the wild. Out of all the northern predators, the wolf is the most social species that prefers to live in packs formed by family units. extract: Werewolves. Fucking werewolves. His son had been hanging out with werewolves and had been fighting werewolves and had been lying about it all to him for longer than he realised. or the fic where Noah Stilinski finds out about werewolves and slowly gets used to being part of the pack.
Matryoshka(s) (E) 23K (5/5) by Gege_from_the_void_89
Stiles becomes known as Koschei when his father gets killed by a woman going by the nickname of Babayaga, and when the boy starts to plan how to avenge his father, the Russian mafia gets brought in sooner than later, till all his plan comes down to one single person he has to charm: Derek Hale. Will Stiles be able to get revenge for his father? Will he be able to handle something that wasn’t part of the plan?
Twilight (E) 67K (2/2) by Hedwig221b
Derek. Stiles thought about him the most. Something told him that it wasn’t the last time, far from it. He thought about his softness and his open desire to kill. Stiles’ hands remembered the heat of his hands. His neck longed to feel the coating warmth of Derek’s breath. His lips burned from the kiss that never happened. Everything was so fucking complicated. Except one thing. It was the only clear thought in his head. The one that made his stomach clench from fear, his heart stutter from hope, and his lips stretch in a smile. He was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with Derek.
We Ain’t Angry At You, Love. You’re The Greatest Thing We’ve Lost. (NR) 33K (9/12) by Christell_Nobody
Since Void, so much has happened. His dad is still just as neglectful, and now all his friends just stopped all contact. Derek and Peter left. If it wasn’t for Melissa and Jordan he’d be drowning and probably dead. After his 16th birthday he makes a decision, Melissa and Jordan help him and are supportive, a bit heartbroken but understanding. Noah doesn’t even care what he’s signing. Doesn’t care he signed his parental rights away, but was he ever a parent? With promises to keep contact, he is off. “So pack up your car, put a hand on your heart.”
Yes To Heaven (E) 85K (2/2) by Hedwig221b
Stiles ruined him. The damage was irreparable. He didn’t want the food that wasn’t made by Stiles or shared with him; the water tasted stale; the clothes were asphyxiating and scratchy; the air was wrong, wrong without Stiles’ scent in it. Fuck, what was wrong with him? How could that pretty little thing change him so much? He had an iron grip on his control before, being in tandem with his instincts, but within weeks, all of it was gone. As soon as he thought of Stiles, though, of his scent, his moans, and the little wrinkle on his forehead as he orgasmed, his mind settled. What was life before Stiles? Everything was somewhere far, far away, forgotten, bleak, and meaningless. Derek thought he knew what light was as he looked at the microscopic dots of the stars above. Then Stiles came into his life and showed him the sun.

Drunk Actions, Sober Thoughts- part 2
Part 1 @theboreworms @schemmentisbaby @ literally everyone else who bullied me into writing a part 2, i hope this lives up to your expectations.
Summary: Are drunk actions really sober thoughts?
WC: ~2.35k
Tumblr media
When Melissa wakes up, she wakes with a groan. Jesus Christ, how much did she have to drink at Janine’s party last night? And who let her drink that- it hits her at a dizzying rate. Barbara was determined to get Sea Barbara to come out, which she succeeded in. And because she and the redhead usually go shot for shot with heavy handed pours, Melissa also got absolutely hammered.
The second grade teacher turns, and she realizes she’s in her bed. How did she get- Holy shit. She vaguely remembers flirting with you the entire night. Does that mean you brought her home? Did she say anything stupid? Did she try to make any moves on you?
“Never goin’ shot for shot with Barbie again,” Melissa grumbles to herself as she reaches for her nightstand drawer to grab Advil. Of course though, there’s already a glass of water and two pills sitting nicely on top. She downs them and prays to God himself that this hangover will go away quickly.
Once she’s secure in the fact that she isn’t going to get sick standing up, the redhead makes her way out of bed, secures her reading glasses on her head, and heads downstairs. And sitting on the coffee table is your note. Her tired eyes can’t read your note without her glasses, so she pulls them down and sets them on the tip of her nose before scanning what you had written.
“Fuck,” Melissa mumbles to herself. “What the fuck did I do last night?”
As she cooks herself breakfast, memories come back in pieces. She remembers taking shots with Barbara, you coming in, dancing with you- her hand in your back pocket.
Meanwhile, at breakfast, you’re doing everything that you can to try to stay focused and pay attention to what your dad is telling you, but it’s quite difficult.
“What’s got you so distracted today, kiddo?” your father asks. “And don’t tell me it’s nothing, because it’s clearly something.”
You shrug. “Just… had a long night last night.”
“Why would that be?” your dad chuckles. “You knew you had to be up bright and early to be with your old man today.”
“My coworker had a party, and I ended up having to take my other colleague home,” you explain, and you quietly pray he doesn’t pry any further.
Of course though, he does. “Was it that Melissa character?”
Your cheeks turn red at the memory of last night. “Yeah,” you mumble.
“What happened? Did you tell her how you feel?”
You shake your head. “Of course not. But, uh-” You scratch the back of your head. “She might’ve told me how she feels about me.”
“Oh?” your dad raises his eyebrows as he takes a sip of his coffee. “So what came of that?”
“Well,” you sigh softly. “Nothing yet. I had to leave to come meet you, but I told her I would come back so we could talk about it today.”
“Why the hell are you here with me, kid?” the man across the table asks you. “You should be there with her.”
“I wouldn’t cancel on you, dad,” you roll your eyes. “I haven’t seen you in a while, and I wouldn’t cancel on you.”
“Well, I’m telling you now to get the hell out of here and go to her.”
“We’re in the middle of breakfast.”
“And I’ll see you again next weekend,” your father tells you as he takes a bite of his hash brown. “Go get your girl, kid.”
“Are you being serious right now?”
He nods. “Go. I’ll be waiting for your call to tell me how it went.”
With a heavy breath blown out, you stand, grab your purse, kiss your cheek, and head out of the restaurant.
Your father watches you go before picking up his cell phone and calling your mother. “Jude, I think our girl might finally get her girl.”
“It’s about damn time, Bobby.”
Your heart is racing by the time you pull back into Melissa’s driveway. You can see her silhouette through the window and take a deep breath for getting out of the car and making your way up to the house.
You have no idea how this is going to go, but you can only hope that it works out in your favor. You knock gently, and she’s at the door about thirty seconds later.
Her hair is up in one of the messiest buns you’ve seen, her glasses are on the tip of her nose, and even though she’s simply in her pajamas, you can’t help but think about how beautiful she looks right now. How waking up next to her this morning was something that you’ve wanted to do for a long time.
“Hey,” she sighs softly as she steps aside to let you in.
“Hey,” you reply just as gently. “How are you feeling this morning?”
She shrugs. “Woke up with a ridiculous hangover. Thank you for the Advil and water this morning.”
“Of course,” you chuckle quietly.
She gestures for you to come inside. “Well, are you going to just stand there, or are you going to come in?”
You make your way into the house on light feet and set your purse down on her couch. “I think we need to talk.”
“Yeah,” Melissa hums. “Listen, about last night… I’m really sorry if I crossed a boundary.”
You shake your head. “You didn’t cross any boundaries,” you promise her. “I just think we need to talk about the things that were said and done last night. How much of it do you remember?”
She relays to you what she remembers- drinking with Barbara, having you near her most of the night once you got there, the dancing… her hand placement.
“You remember more than I thought you would,” you can’t help but giggle. “Especially for how gone you were last night.”
“I’m sure there’s more that I’m not remembering,” the redhead scratches the back of her neck. “Care to fill me in?”
You worry your lip between your teeth for a few seconds before you sigh softly. “Mel, you… you kept telling people I was your girl. When I brought you home, you… you had me pressed up against the wall.”
The redhead’s mouth falls open in shock. “Holy shit.”
“You told me you have feelings for me and what you love about me,” you continue.
“I-” Melissa puts her head in her hands to hide her embarrassment. “I am so sorry.”
You shrug. “I wasn’t mad about it. I just- is that really how you feel about me?” You subconsciously tuck a stray hair behind your ear. You quirk your lips to one side and keep your eyes on the ground. If she didn’t mean what she told you last night, you don’t want Melissa to see the disappointment on your face. That would be beyond embarrassing. What you don’t see is the slight widening of Melissa’s eyes as she remembers something she said last night.
“Hun.” A soft hand cups your cheek and forces you to look into those jade eyes of her own.
“Mel,” you sigh softly. “It’s fine.”
Red hair sways back and forth gently as she shakes her head. “Drunk words and actions are sober thoughts,” she tells you the sentiment she slurred out last night.
And then her lips are on yours again. And although she had kissed you before previously, you aren’t expecting it this time either. It takes you a few seconds to set your hands on her waist and pull her closer to you. When she pulls away, there’s a warm smile on her face, and her eyes are a softer shade of green than you’ve ever seen. The sparkle in them is as bright as ever.
“I meant what I told you last night,” Melissa tells you quietly. “I just… never thought I’d actually get the girl.”
“I thought I’d never get the girl,” you chuckle softly as you lean in to kiss her again. “Holy shit.”
“Just wait until you can see what else I can do,” the redhead smirks.
You end up spending the day with Melissa. It’s warm, it’s cozy. It’s quite similar to how you would usually spend a day with her outside of school, but there’s more stolen kisses, more hand holding, arms wrapped around your waist as you cook lunch and dinner together.
“So,” you hum out quietly as you sit next to her for dinner today. “I do think we should talk about what… this… is.” You gesture between the two of you.
“I don’t want no fling,” the redhead tells you. “I want you. And if that’s something that you can’t handle, then I think we need to call it-”
You stop her with a kiss. When you pull back you roll your eyes at her. “Melissa Schemmenti, I haven’t even been on a date since I started working at Abbott because the only person I can think about is you. I don’t want a fling either. I want you. I want this.”
She nods with that starry smile of hers. It dims a few seconds later though. “Do you think… think we can just keep this under wraps for a little bit? Like, at least with the work group?”
“You aren’t going to tell Barb?” you chuckle.
Melissa shrugs. “She’ll find out in her own time… probably when I drag you along to one of our brunches over the summer.”
You end up calling your father on the car ride home from your now girlfriend’s house.
“Kid?” your dad picks up. “Hey, I was expecting your call a little earlier than this. Is everything okay?”
“I’m good,” you sigh softly. “Sorry. I was just spending time with my girlfriend.”
You can hear your mother gasp in the background. “Girlfriend?”
“Girlfriend,” you confirm.
You can practically see smile on both of their faces. “Oh, how wonderful.”
“When do we get to meet her?” your mom asks loudly. You can faintly hear your father telling her that she doesn’t need to scream into the phone to be heard.
“I’m sure she’ll make an appearance sooner or later,” you laugh. “We are keeping it quiet for the time being, but… you’ll meet her over the summer.”
Your girlfriend ends up accompanying you to the family fourth of July picnic. As you could’ve guessed, your parents absolutely adore her. She’s the perfect amount of charming while also maintaining that mysterious and sarcastic aura around her. She’s great with your younger cousins, and also their parents. Quite a few of your family members end up pulling you aside to tell you that if you let her go, they’re taking her side in the matter. You just reply with the same thing each time: an eye roll and the statement, “I’m not planning on letting her go.”
The rest of July, you spend a lot of time down at the shore. Melissa and her ex-husband have a time share, and your now girlfriend prefers to use it during July while he would rather have June. It’s convenient the way that all worked itself out. You don’t think you’ve eaten so many curly fries in vinegar before this summer.
July passes by quickly, soaking in the sun, taking in the views (of your girlfriend in her bathing suit), resting and relaxing. And then August creeps up on you, and it’s about time for the two of you to begin thinking about going back to school.
“So we’re still keeping it on the down low?” you ask gently as you crawl into bed the night before professional development starts.
“I think so,” the redhead shrugs. “I like this little bubble that we’re in- don’t you?”
You smile and kiss her warmly. “I do.”
“An’,” your girlfriend shrugs again. “If they find out, they find out. Ain’t like we hiding it like Janine and Gregory.”
“I still can’t believe we saw them at the park last week and they didn’t see us,” you chuckle out.
You somehow manage to make it through the week of professional development, and your kids are starting back up before you know it. You’re down the hall in the classroom next to Gregory’s, and Melissa is right across from Janine. It’s a nice little square that the four of your classrooms make. And it’s funny as hell to both you and your girlfriend how obvious they’re being, and yet they somehow still think they’re so subtle.
You, Barbara, Ava, and Melissa all get pulled to do a talking head for one of the camera men. He asks what you think is going on between Janine and Gregory.
“We all know,” the four of you state at once. The four of you continue on to state that you have no idea how they could even think that they’re hiding their relationship- what dumb asses. The four of you aren’t dumb either, but none of you really care. Well, aside from Ava who thinks that it’s an insult to her intelligence.
The four of you go to leave the hall from your interview, only for the camera crew to keep Barbara behind. Ava tosses her hair and saunters off while you and your girlfriend just smile at each other before parting ways.
“Are there any other changes that you’ve noticed over the summer?” he asks the kindergarten teacher.
Barb glances around to make sure no one is listening before leaning in just slightly. “Melissa and Y/N? Ooh, they are playing the same game that Gregory and Janine are. And I have a feeling… Gregory and Janine aren’t the only two who got it together that night at the end of the year party. Hmm.” She points to the two of you- you leaning against Melissa’s doorframe.
The camera quickly pans over to the two of you, and you don’t know it… but you and your girlfriend are just as bad as your counterparts.

FEELINGS - j. champion
You and Jack met during the chemistry reads for Scream VI. It was obvious that, from the beginning, you two were close. Your personalities went well together and everyone saw your obvious chemistry. The chemistry really helped, seeing as your characters were love interests. As time went on, you began to see Jack differently and he the same. And maybe, unlike your characters, the two of you would have a happy ending.
Filming for Scream VI was slowly coming to an end. You heard someone say that you only had about 2 weeks of filming left before everything wrapped.
It was bittersweet.
Occasionally, you'd find yourself reminiscing about all of the friendships and memories you've made this summer. Something about your castmates just made the whole filming process all the more better. Especially since this was your first real project.
The directors were taking a chance with you, hiring a newcomer was a risky move. But needless to say, they believed they made the right choice. You were a phenomenal actor.
"Earth go, Y/N." Jasmine was waving her hand in front of your face, bringing your attention back to the 4 sitting around you.
You, Melissa, Jenna, Devyn, Liana, and Jenna all sat in a circle in the grass. A break had been announced while they worked out some kinks in a scene and they let you all just chill together.
"Hmm?"
Devyn reached over and squeezed your hand, smiling sweetly at you. "We're rating our castmates 'cause we're bored."
She was the sweetest, just like her character.
"And it's time to rate Mason, and I don't plan on rating him because he's like my brother and that's weird." Jasmine laughed, earning laughs from the group.
You shrugged, "7.5?"
Most nodded, except for Jenna who scoffed and called out the number 4. Her response only elicited a fit of laughter from the group. Jenna loved picking on Mason, it was one of her favorite pastimes.
"Oooh, i've got one." Melissa clapped her hands in excitement. "Y/N, rate Jack."
You swallowed harshly. Suddenly very thankful that the boys weren't around instead of being mopey like you had been before. You actually had been wishing that Jack... and Mason were there. But now that they'd asked that? Their absence was actually a blessing.
"3."
Jack was your best friend.
"Bullshit!" Liana yelled.
She was right, you'd lied straight through your teeth. You'd met Jack while doing chemistry reads months ago. Your characters played love interests so you'd gotten to meet the boy before the rest of the cast so the directors could ensure the two of you had believable chemistry.
"Um." you mumbled, you'd actually fallen for him as time passed.
When you got to set in June you thought the constant butterflies in your stomach were from being excited and nervous to film. It wasn't until a week or two later and you were grabbing lunch alone with Jack that you realized that the butterflies only showed up when you were in his presence.
Jenna playfully pushed you by the arm, "C'mon, tell us the real answer."
You hated how they knew about your real feelings. You had never admitted them, though. So, their knowledge was pure speculation at this point.
"10." you'd said it almost too quiet for them to hear.
But when they erupted in screams and Devyn tackled you in a hug, you knew they'd heard you.
"No one can tell him! He definitely only sees me as a friend and i'm not ruining the friendship." you instructed from your spot below Devyn.
They all agreed to not tell, but also told you that you were wrong. Apparently they knew that your feelings weren't 1 sided.
"Who likes who?"
You all froze.
It was the familiar voice of Jack that made your stomach drop. Devyn crawled off of you, helping you sit up. You couldn't bare to look at Jack. You were sure your cheeks were bright red and he'd know immediately.
"Chad likes Tara." Jenna blurted, attempting to get Jack off the topic.
The grass looked very interesting all of a sudden.
"Well, I knew that. That's boring." he scoffed.
You mentally cursed when he sat down next to you on the grass, his knee bumping with yours. It took everything in you to not look at him still. Jack was your best friend after all, his brown eyes always brightened your day.
"Jackson, wanna play our game?" Jasmine broke the silence.
Your eyes snapped to Jasmine's, she wouldn't.
You looked around the circle, realizing that all of the girls had smirks on their lips. They knew what Jasmine was up to.
"Sure?" he laughed nervously.
Jasmine rubbed her hands together, never looking back at you. "We're rating our castmates, so, rate Y/N."
"Easy, 10."
What?
You looked right at him as all of the girls went crazy. Did he say what you thought he did?
He wouldn't look at you though, his cheeks burning crimson. You couldn't tell the reason behind the blushing, though, sometimes Jack would blush when he had too much attention on him.
But it still made you sick that he wouldn't look at you.
"I don't feel good." you mumbled, jumping up and running off.
Jack was oblivious though.
While you were basically dry heaving in your trailer, he had texted and wished for you to feel better and to ask if you were still on for your movie night. You sighed, actually thankful that he didn't get the hint as to why Jasmine had asked or why you ran off and simply texted a "thank you, and yes."
The Jasmine texted, checking on you and apologizing for asking Jack. Even adding the disclaimer about how at least he thought you were a 10. You forgave her and told here there were no hard feelings. It was just a simple game.
A few hours later and you had all returned to your apartments for the night.
You were freshly showered with your hair in two braids down your back, body clad in pajamas. Your pajamas consisted of a pair of boy's boxers and a tshirt Jack had given you of his. The two of you were at his apartment one night and you saw an avatar shirt he had on the arm of his couch and you had geeked out over it. In that moment, Jack knew he had to give it to you.
The shirt had brought you more joy than it probably ever would him, and he'd definitely smile every time he saw you in it.
"Knock, knock!" Jack called out as he walked in using the key you'd given him in case you lost yours — well that and you didn't want to have to let him in every time he came over.
He held up a bag of takeout, "I still got the tacos in case you were hungry. Feeling better?"
You nodded, walking over and taking the bag from his hand, leading him to the kitchen.
"I don't know what happened." you lied, taking the containers out of the bag. "But i'm much better now."
The two of your stood in the kitchen eating your tacos. For some reason, every time Jack came over he'd bring tacos from this place you two had found at the beginning of filming. You'd stand around in the kitchen and chow done, catching up on any time spent apart before eventually finishing and going to watch your movie of choice.
"Do you mind if we watch in my room? I'm exhausted." you sold your story by yawning.
You were telling the truth, you were absolutely wiped today. Jack shrugged, lunging toward you and picked you up. You let out a scream of surprise as he carried you, walking you back to your bedroom.
He carefully sat you down on the covers and let you crawl into your spot while he took his shoes off. Without hesitation, he crawled in next to you, propping himself against the headrest.
Your heart started beating closer at your proximity. You tried to ignore it be cueing up the movie, Scream (2022) tonight. The two of you had been on a Scream kick lately.
"This one's gonna be weird to watch since we know these weirdos in real life." Jack chuckled, getting more comfortable, which only brought him closer to you.
Was that on purpose?
You couldn't tell.
As the movie went on, you suddenly became super aware of how close the two of you were sitting. Your head was only inches from Jack's shoulder, so you gave in, letting your head fall onto him.
You'd done this countless times before, but this time felt different. You could've sworn you heard Jack breathe in sharply.
A couple minutes passed before you felt something touching your hand under the covers. You focused for a second before realizing that Jack was tapping the back of your hand with his fingers. Without thinking, you flipped your hand so your palm was up, Jack quickly intertwining his fingers with yours now.
You'd never been more thankful that it was dark, because he wouldn't be able to see how red your cheeks were now.
You got more comfortable, enjoying both the movie and Jack rubbing the back of your hand with the pad of his thumb. Once again, he'd held your hand before, but this time felt different.
Your mind was going crazy and so were all the butterflies in your stomach. Oh what this boy did to you.
You'd met him about a month after you had turned 17, about a week before Christmas. His birthday about a month prior to that. The two of you had bonded over being "late 2004 babies" and the rest of your friendship was history.
But what if it changes tonight?
Jack squeezed your hand.
You lifted your head, looking to him, your hands staying connected. Jack had a different look on his face, once that you'd only ever seen when he was playing Ethan and he was looking at you. This was a look you'd seen Jack portray when looking at his girlfriend.
But this time the look felt entirely genuine.
"J?" you questioned quietly when you noticed his eyes flickering to different places around your face, one of them being your lips.
It was like you were nervous.
Almost questioning if this was real.
Jack didn't say anything, instead he ducked his head and connected his lips with yours. You gasped slightly, not expecting his abruptness.
But you didn't hesitate to kiss back.
Sure, you'd kissed before while acting, but this right here? This was real. This was Jack and Y/N. Not Ethan and Y/C/N.
Your free hand held the back of his neck, fingers fiddling with the curls at the nape of his neck. Jack smiled into the kiss and you swore you almost lost all composure.
How could he be so cute?
His hand broke free of yours and you faltered for a second. Only regaining your composure when you felt his hands grips your hips to pull you on top of him. You forgot how strong he was.
Jack's hands stayed on your hips while your hand not on the back of his neck decided to rest on his chest. You hadn't realize how toned he was and you could definitely feel the muscle under his tshirt.
He pulled away, letting you sit up slightly as you both goofily smiled at each other. "I'm assuming this is okay since you so willing let me pull you onto my lap?" Jack raised an eyebrow, the slightest smirk playing on his lips.
You couldn't help but peck his lips, heart fluttering when you saw his smirk falter into a pout when you pulled away so quickly.
"I mean, we both rated each other 10s earlier and i'm pretty sure i've liked you for a couple months now."
He seemed proud of himself, the cutest smile now on his lips. "Good, good. Glad I didn't read the signs wrong and ruin the friendship."
"That'd be awful."
You hand slid around from the back of his neck and up to his cheek, your thumb rubbing over his cheekbone. You couldn't help but admire him.
You've done that time and time again. But never this close or with these feelings.
He was looking at you the same way. His hands had found their way underneath your shirt, sitting on your bare waist and thumbs caressing the soft skin underneath them.
"Kiss me again, your lips are addicting." he mumbled, his voice quiet from being mesmerized by the situation he'd found himself in.
You happily obliged.
You quickly leaned in and connected your lips, both of you moving together in sync. It was like your lips were created to be together.
Jack's hands stayed put, never once wandering. And same for you. The two of you were content with doing exactly what you were doing. Maybe the rest will come a different day.
"Stay over tonight?" you mumbled against his lips.
You felt him nod, "I'd like that."
You were ecstatic. The thought of falling asleep in Jack's arms had you beyond excited. He always made you feel safe, so you had a feeling you'd sleep like a baby tonight.
"Good, good." You let a finger lightly trace his jawline, down his neck, down his chest, and then stopping when you left your hand to rest in his lap.
Jack caught you hand, breaking the kiss and looking you dead in the eye, his eyes wider than usual. "I'm going to need you to not do that again, because i'm really trying to be respectful and only kiss you tonight and that's not helping."
Your cheeks burned red, "Oh." You patted his chest, "Then let's stop this for now and finish the movie."
You crawled off of him, Jack saying something about how that was a good idea before kissing you quickly once more. You tucked your body into his once more, except now your head was rested on his chest and his arm fell lazily around your body.
You could get used to this.
