BJD 15 Questions
I remember these were popular on tumblr a while back but since I haven’t seen one in a while I decided to make my own. I made them with BJDs and similar dolls like DDs in mind but feel free to use these prompts to talk about any type of doll! You can also skip any question you don’t have an answer for.
If you post on your own blog please tag with ‘BJD 15 questions’ so I can see your answers! You can also do it on Instagram or Twitter if you like.
1. When did you get into the hobby? Do you remember the reason?
2. Related, what was one of the first dolls you remember seeing? (A photo or in person)
3. Do you have a ‘type’ of doll you gravitate towards or do you like a bit of everything?(ie general look, size, ambience)
4. Do you like bigger or smaller dolls? How big/small is your limit?
5. Do you have a favourite company? What do you like about them?
6. Do you have a preference for resin, vinyl or other?(ie ABS and other plastics)
7. Do you still have your first doll?
8. Gush about your favourite doll.
9. Do you prefer dolls based on existing characters (official or custom), dolls based on your original characters, or dolls that are just dolls?
10. Have you ever been to a doll/BJD focussed convention (eg Doll’s Party, IDoll, Doll Show, Resin Rose, L Doll, Dollism, PNW BJD Expo, Melbourne BJD Emporium etc). Would you like to? Which seems most interesting to you based on what you know?
11. How important is the photography side of the hobby to you? Do you enjoy photography and sharing photos or do you like to keep things to yourself?
12. Have you ever travelled with a doll? Would you like to?
13. What’s your grail doll? If you don’t have one, do you have a ‘bucket list’ hobby wish - something you really want to be able to do/make/experience one day?
14. A magic doll fairy appears and decides to grant you a wish. She can make the type of (non-existent) doll you wish existed finally exist in reality. What is it?
15. What’s your piece of advice for a newbie?

The Ever-Disappearing Spoons Around the World
In my shared apartment, it feels like spoons are almost gone. I can't tell if my roommates are taking them and not bringing them back, or if we just need a lot more spoons. What’s even stranger is that it seems like forks are multiplying like crazy instead. Or maybe that’s just my imagination…
Lately I read an interesting article about teaspoons disappearing.
It’s a well-known story, but it seems that teaspoons go missing all over the world. In Melbourne, Australia, researchers at the Macfarlane Burnet Institute secretly numbered 70 teaspoons to track them. After 5 months, they found that 80% of the teaspoons had disappeared!
The researchers came to a funny conclusion: “Somewhere in the universe, there is a planet full of spoon-like life forms. These beings live with humanoids, reptiles, tree-dwelling creatures, and smart, blue-colored aliens. And these spoons regularly abduct our teaspoons!” In other words, “Spoons are alive!”
This institute has published many famous papers (though none have won the Ig Nobel Prize, despite being quite famous). In another study, they looked at how long it takes for half the teaspoons to disappear. This is called the “half-life.” They found that the half-life of a teaspoon was 81 days, but in shared tea rooms, it was only 42 days. From this, they calculated that the institute loses about 360 teaspoons per year. To keep 70 usable teaspoons, they need to buy about 250 new ones every year (since spoons are “alive”!).
This research on the everyday mystery of disappearing teaspoons is very interesting! It seems like the spoons are trying to escape human control.
The study also found that losing teaspoons in the workplace is a fast process. This can be a problem for office culture. People may start using forks, knives, or even staplers to measure coffee or sugar. This wastes time and makes employees unhappy, which lowers work efficiency. So, it’s actually a serious issue!
The institute estimates that it costs about 100 Australian dollars per year to keep enough teaspoons. If this happens at many workplaces, the total cost is quite large!
Interestingly, this problem is not only in Australia. Another study found that teaspoons also disappear in hospitals and research centers in France. So, it’s already known to be an international issue! Right now, researchers are comparing how often teaspoons disappear in Australia and France.
Back to the UFO story about spoons—opinions are divided at the Macfarlane Burnet Institute. Some researchers support “counterphenomenological resistentialism,” which means “objects are against us” (les choses sont contre nous). This idea is that objects, like teaspoons, have a natural dislike for humans and try to escape.
Maybe the rate of disappearing teaspoons in Japan is lower than in other countries, but this research provides lots of useful information!
So, probably, the spoons in my apartment are also participating in this movement.

Murphy’s Law
There is an adage known as Murphy’s Law that states "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."  The wisdom of the adage has been proven since time immemorial, and hard experience demonstrates that its application is universal, and it certainly applies to the operation of naval warships.
Surface warships have operated in close formations since the age of sail. While those close formations have a strategic purpose, there is also a downside. Close formations introduce the prospect of collisions. Before the inventions of radio, radar and electronic navigations systems collisions were often caused by fog, bad weather, human error, incorrect communications or any of a myriad of other things. One tragic example of a collision caused by human error involved a five-year-old destroyer that was pulled out of Mare Island Naval Shipyard’s reserve fleet in September of 1950. She had been built at the end of World War II and was placed in reserve as part of the massive drawdown following that war.  When North Korea invaded South Korea the United Nations initial response was to recommend a naval blockade, but this strategy quickly morphed to active “boots on the ground” combat when President Truman was stunned to learn that demobilization had progressed to the point that the assets needed to impose a naval blockade did not exist. Recommissioning Frank E. Evans was part of a massive response to the outbreak of the Korean War.
The USS Frank E. Evans (DD 754) was equipped with all the latest communication, navigation and radar systems allowing her to serve with minimal casualties and with distinction through the Korean and Vietnam Wars until she met her fate at the hands of human error nineteen years later.  Following a deployment to the Vietnam War the Frank E. Evans was assigned to the South China Sea as part of a Southeast Asia Treaty Organization exercise. During the exercise she was to operate in formation with a multinational fleet including the light aircraft carrier Her Majesty’s Australian Ship (HMAS) Melbourne (R21) of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and four other escorts: the US destroyers; the USS Everett F. Larson (DD-830); USS James E. Kyes (DD-787) , and the frigates Her Majesty’s New Zealand Ship (HMNZS) Blackpool (F77) and Her Majesty’s Ship (HMS) Cleopatra (F28). In the dark of night on 3 June 1969, the Frank E. Evans was ordered to a new escort station from in front of the MELBOURNE to the plane guard position behind the Melbourne.
Captain John Phillip Stevenson of the Melbourne was extremely sensitive to the dangers inherent in maneuvering ships in formation as five years earlier the Melbourne rammed and sank the RAN destroyer HMAS Voyager (D04), when the latter altered course across her bow. Eighty-two of Voyager’s personnel were killed. Captain Stevenson dined with all the escort captains and emphasized the importance of turning away from Melbourne’s bow when shifting stations from ahead to astern the carrier. Despite that warning, when the Frank E. Evans was ordered to plane guard position at 3 am her bridge personal turned her to port directly into the path of the Melbourne. The Melbourne sounded collision alerts and notified the bridge of the Frank E. Evans, but it was too late. The 22,000-ton Melbourne rammed into the 2,200-ton Frank E. Evans amidships. The force of the collision rolled the Frank E. Evans 90 degrees over and sheared her in two. The bow section then rolled upside down and sank in minutes while the stern section remained afloat. Seventy-four of Frank E. Evans crew were killed. Undoubtedly, many were spared because the stern section remained afloat.
The Court of Inquiry that followed became a bit of a circus as blame for the collision was placed on both ships, but there were charges that the American Admiral chairing the inquiry steered it to that conclusion. Whatever the conclusions of the Court of Inquiry 74 men died on a calm clear night when a state-of-the-art warship equipped with every navigational system available was turned directly into the path of another.

Career Advice: Figuring Out Your True Calling
What’s your true calling?Canadian dentist and Melbourne DDS graduate Dr Arora
It’s certainly a loaded question and one we suspect you’ve asked yourself.
We had University of Melbourne Doctor of Dental Surgery alum Dr. Arora share how she narrowed down her true calling. She ultimately landed on dentistry; however, her advice is relevant to anyone considering their future career.
Here are some key takeaways from our chat with Dr. Aurora:
Consider You Values and Skills What do you value? Dig deep. Create a list of things that you genuinely value (as well as those you don’t). Is it family time? Travel? Interacting with people? Do you value sleep? (Does anyone not value sleep?)
What skills do you have? Are you willing to spend hours (and hours) working on them? Be honest with yourself.

What does it take to get into an Australian dental school?
The road to studying dentistry in Australia can sometimes have bumps along the way, especially when it comes to being rejected from your dream school, or facing obstacles before you can even get through the application phase.
Are you stuck and wondering about your options?
We’ve put together some of the most common hurdles our students face, and what you can do if you find yourself in one of these situations.
You don’t meet the prerequisites
The University of Melbourne DDS prerequisites are quite strict and require that students have completed approved courses in human anatomy, human physiology, and biochemistry to be eligible to apply.
The anatomy prerequisite in particular tends to be the largest barrier for many of our students. A class with a lab component with human cadaveric materials is required. Because of this, only certain anatomy courses are approved and not every Canadian school offers approved courses. This is especially true for students on the west coast, as there are no approved courses at UBC, SFU or uVictoria. Don’t fret, though—we’ve got some an alternative pathway for you:
Enroll in an approved course Although you cannot apply unless you meet the prerequisites, Melbourne allows you to enroll in these courses during the application season. These courses can be taken as non-award classes or open studies and don’t need to be taken as part of your degree to count toward meeting the prerequisite requirement. This means you can submit your application early in the year with your interim transcript and proof of enrollment in the class. Once you complete the prerequisite course, you will need to submit an updated transcript as proof of completion.
Prerequisite Subject Assessment If you find that the anatomy, physiology and/or biochemistry courses that you have completed are not found on the above chart, you can have these courses assessed by submitting a Prerequisite Subject Assessment Form. You’ll need to include full course outlines for each course you want assessed. If needed, we recommend you do this as soon as possible in advance of applying so you can plan accordingly as you may end up needing to enroll in an approved subject as per above.
Dental Aptitude Test  or Dental Admission Test
If you haven’t written the DAT, you still have dental school options. OzTREKK represents 6 programs that do not require the DAT. The undergraduate-entry programs (JCU, Griffith, CSU, and UQ) are open to applicants who are applying directly from high school and to those who have partially or fully completed one or more post-secondary degrees. The University of Otago (our first dental program in New Zealand) offers a Bachelor of Dental Surgery program that is open to applicants who have a completed bachelor’s degree and have met all the mandatory prerequisite courses.
Your DAT does not meet the minimum requirements To be eligible to apply, you must meet the DAT minimum requirements for each program. If one or more sections of your DAT does not meet these requirements, but you are keen to apply to the graduate-entry programs, you will need to rewrite the exam. DAT reports are valid for 2 years.
The DAT is now offered throughout the year at professional test centres across Canada. OzTREKK’s university partners will also accept the American DAT in lieu of the Canadian version of the test.
