Good to know it’s a serial figurine, but once again, I live in the bumfuck nowhere of Eastern Europe, and in the eyes of everyone but Aliexpress it’s on another planet, so paying almost half of the figurine’s price in delivery to then it have potentially chokeslammed into concrete by our postal services is not what I want to do. WHEW almost missed this one, good thing I decided to make one last quick check before going to sleep. Alright, you want semi-forgotten gems? You want the hidden good good? Okay, lessee what’s brewing in my pot...

As far as amazing-tastic reads go? I’ll never tire of recommending Coffee Time. My favorite collection of one-shots bar none, the true essence of Beauty In Simplicity. The theme loosely stringing together each story is coffee, although more often than not, it is barely more than a background element - but it is there nonetheless, a Virgil leading you on a trip across stories that drip with astounding amounts of humanity. There are no bombastic shonen battles, no titillating fanservice, no trite cardboard stereotypes - only snippets of everyday life, and perhaps a little bit more. But even when veering briefly into the exceptional, it is always short-lived and fairly tame. It’s an incredibly relaxing manga that is likely to leave a faint warmth in your heart by the time you’ve finished it, bittersweet just like a good, hot brew. I’ve re-read Chapter 16, the Lying Doctor, so many times I could quote it word by word. I’d also recommend everything (sadly little!) else Toyoda Tetsuya has produced, though be warned that Undercurrent is a tad heavy, so maybe keep that one in mind for when you’re in the mood for some grippingly realistic drama.

If you’re in the mood for a hauntingly mind-bending trip, Homunculus is a trip, a half, and the two whole remaining quarters to boot. It features what I consider to be some of the most chillingly gripping sequences I’ve ever seen drawn by sheer virtue of how viscerally realistic the interactions depicted are.

If you’d rather pick something a tad less discomforting but equally engaging, you can’t go wrong with Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys, or really anything Urasawa’s ever penned. Be warned: you will lose your sleep one ‘just one more chapter and I’ll be done for today!’ at a time.

Or, wait! What if you want both the gripping themes and the wacky action all in one neat package?! Well, go read Hoshi no Samidare! And Sengoku Youko! Oh, you want more? You’re astoundingly insatiable, but also, I perfectly understand, so here’s Spirit Circle to add onto the pile. Look, the point is: read Mizukami Satoshi’s stuff. All of it. You will laugh. You’ll get hyped. You will cry. My god, you will cry so damn much, and you’ll be grateful for it. I love Mizukami’s works like I do few other things in the world, and I’m sure you’ll see why if you ever give them a spin.

You just want to chill and get them Good Vibes? Holy moly, go read Kumika no Mikaku now. It’s good for your heart, your soul, your life. Just make sure you’ve eaten beforehand, because otherwise your stomach will be grumbling a lot.

Anime-wise, I am positive that you’ve already seen Astro Fighter Sunred, but if you haven’t, you’re going to love it. It’s about a Sentai hero, his archnemesis, and housekeeping. I’ll let you discover the rest by yourself, because you have to experience it firsthand.

Eve no Jikan is one of my favorite shows to deal with the themes of artificial intelligence, and also conveniently short, so perfect for an evening or two to spend chilling and maybe shed a couple tears along the way.

On the Western side of things, Sylvain Chomet’s The Illusionist is one of my favorite dialogueless (for the most part) movies ever. A lovely, bittersweet tale with a very nice orchestral score.

Speaking of movies? Survive Style 5+ defies all semblances of description. Just watch the trailer. You still won’t be prepared in the slightest for what it’ll throw in your face in its two-hours run.

Now, you’ve already experienced Shadow Hearts, albeit indirectly (how far have you gotten anyway? Did they eventually get as far as to deal with Brazilian ninjas?), so I’ll be skipping that.

Amerzone is a wonderful point and click adventure by Benoit Sokal, same dude behind the Syberia series (haven’t played those? Well play them too!), a pretty chill dieselpunk adventure.

Septerra Core is a woefully forgotten Western RPG that dips fully into the Eastern cauldron of ideas. It takes place on an eponymous planet made up of a core around which float seven different layers of islands, each with its own gimmicky setting, like a blazing hot desert, a medieval fantasy-themed one, and a cyberpunk metropolis which spans the entirety of the continent it sits upon. A childhood favorite!

If you have a GBA emulator, Summon Night: Swordcraft Story and its sequel are pretty solid action RPGs to give a spin to. You get to smelt power drills with a summonable lesbian or a demon gal who occasionally turns into an angel with an opposite personality. It’s pretty damned fun(ny).

Riviera: The Promised Land is also an old GBA favorite and a totally unabashed guilty pleasure. It’s also one of the games in the Depth Heaven series, so expect unorthodox gameplay (though at least for this one you won’t require a 1-hour long tutorial like for Knights in the Nightmare).

Wine & Roses is a challenging RPG Maker game and probably the closest you’ll ever find to a true turn-based equivalent to Dark Souls. There are no random encounter or level ups: all the enemies are bosses who stand in a spot into the map and wait for you to challenge them. If you lose, you are merely booted out of the battle and can re-attempt it to your heart’s content with a different strategy. Winning nets you a reward in the form of equipment or status-boosting items. A skeleton dandy provides commentary all the way through and is also your employer. You really ought to give this one a spin.

If we get the shitty Skyrim iron armour as a mii outfit, that’d be fine. I really worry that Todd’s got his foot in the door, and we’ll wind up with Dovahkiin fighter with MAYBE a Praetor Suit mii gunner outfit.

What I really want is Doomguy with four Praetor Suit colours, four Classic Suit colours, and possibly a Marauder assist trophy.
