There was no big winner on Wednesday night's drawing for $1.09 billion pushing the latest jackpot to the game's fourth largest drawing of all-time and making it eighth largest lottery prize in the U.S. after no one matched all six numbers. It is also one of the longest running streaks without a jackpot winner, according to powerball.com. The last jackpot was won on New Year’s Day in Michigan.

@lynxden Okay, so, one of the big challenges with digital graphics is memory - if you want to be able to display a consistent image, you inevitably have to store some kind of representation of what you want displayed in memory somewhere, and as the quality and detail of what you want to display grows, so does the amount of memory required to represent it.

Take a fairly common screen resolution like, say, 1920x1080 pixels - how much memory does it take to represent that? Well, we have roughly about 2 million pixels... and since we likely want full RGB colour, we're likely using four bytes per pixel - one byte for each colour channel of red, green, and blue, and then one extra byte for padding since computers prefer to work with even byte counts... and that gives us roughly 8 megabytes. Now say we're running a game that has a framerate of 60 fps, and suddenly we need to rewrite that screen memory 60 times per second, meaning we need to be able to write roughly 480 megabytes per second to screen memory just to keep the display updated.

This was... not something that computers used to be able to do.

Now, sure, we can reduce the number of bytes we use per pixel, but that comes at a severe limit to how many colours we can represent: if we use only a single byte per pixel, then that gives us only 8 bits total. Say we divide those up like maybe 3/3/2, then that gives us only 8 shades of red and green, and only 4 shades of blue - sure we can mix them however we like, but it's not really going to be able to represent smooth colour gradients.

So what if we take another approach - we still just use a single byte per pixel, but instead of using that to represent an RGB colour... we use it with a look-up table containing 256 different RGB colour values - this means we still have access to the full RGB colour spectrum, albeit with the limitation that we can only display 256 different colours at the same time.

This is an 8-bit indexed palette - each pixel takes up a single byte, which is then used to reference an index in an array of 256 RGB colours. This is how colours were represented both in .gif images, as well as in old VGA graphics mode 13h (320x200 pixels, 256 colours) on DOS era PCs. The SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis used the same technique, though it was limited to only 64 simultaneous colours.

There are advantages to this beyond just needing less memory (and less CPU cycles copying said memory) - since each pixel value represents a palette index rather than a distinct colour, there's a type of animation you can do called Colour Cycling or Palette Animation where instead of changing the pixels themselves, you change the colour values in the palette array - meaning you can change what colour a particular index represents across the entire screen without having to actually modify a single pixel value.

There are other tricks you can do with this too - ever thought about how the Sonic the Hedgehog games for the Mega Drive/Genesis did water stages? The game basically keeps track of which horizontal scanline the console is currently sending the video output and when it reaches the point where the waterline is, it quickly swaps out the palette from the regular to the underwater one, making everything in the lower half of the screen have a different colour from the top half.

Nowadays this kind of approach to representing colour is largely considered obsolete, but it was a common approach for quite some time, since it could give you quite a range of colours without too much of a performance or memory cost - so long as you only ever needed so many at once. Of course, it also means your ability to do colour blending or light and shading can get pretty limited since you can't just mix pixel RGB values together, but there's still quite a bit you can do with it.

Of course, since I'm doing it on a modern PC running in 32-bit full colour, my implementation is basically a 256-index array of uint32_t containing RGB values and I just do a final pass of translating from the 8-bit framebuffer to the 32-bit framebuffer by using the 8-bit values as array indices before doing the final blit from the 32-bit framebuffer to the actual screen.

I used to poke around with this kind of graphics on the actual VGA mode 13h at some point however long ago, so for me it's a pretty nostalgic approach to doing graphics.

Recently Nintendo won a $15 million dollar lawsuit against 6 companies that were producing and profiting off illegal bootleg Pokémon games.

These games, which are often Gatcha Games are regurgitated up onto the App Store or Google Play store in droves usually with the same premise (Take a traditional Pokémon game battle mechanics wise and make catching Pokémon locked behind a very very pricy and P2W Gatcha system designed to trick little Timmy into wanting more, sometimes there’s catching mechanics but no it’s all about that cold hard cash baby as after a certain point the “devs” just give up if there is even a story to begin with.)

You may have seen these in passing on YouTube or that one weird Mario Odyssey rip-off a few years ago.

The game that’s been placed front and center for everyone to see is a certain title called Pocket Monster Reissue (Yeah I have no idea what that title is supposed to mean either)

This was kinda the only video I could find on it. Yes it’s in Chinese but there are English versions of these games floating out there.

It’s your standard Pokémon Gatcha ripoff affair: Ash, Gary/Blue, and Oak (along with other popular characters) appear, it’s a rehash of Kanto because that’s what the kids want, megas and legendaries are oddly locked behind a very high paywall, stolen artwork, Engrish, etc… etc…

The whole nine yards or whatever…

Something you may not know is that it is usually pretty difficult for these games to be taken down because well… China’s kinda had a long history of ignoring international copyright laws to the point, especially when it comes to gaming, that when these things get onto the internet, can spawn memes because of a funny Swede’s reaction to a horribly colored Mario and the Flintstones theme song.

Because of this, and also the use of shell companies that bootleggers use to hide themselves behind, catching and shutting down these operations don’t tend to be the easiest things for ip owners to go after.

And trust me, these things rake in the cash because well… You’re literally ripping off one of the most popular media franchises there is.

This game in question was raking in at around $42 million in a single year alone, Nintendo filed this suit back in around 2021 seeking up to $72 million in damages alone.

Yes I critique Nintendo for some of their legal aggression because y’all need to chill with the fangames, but this is great news because these games are dangerous for a number of reasons.

Also to make matters even stranger, one of the defendants in the case is a manufacturing company. While this hasn’t been confirmed, this company was likely being used as a means to lander money through or something similar.

Are the ArchieSonic comics actually an 80's/90's syndicated cartoon? Episode 33: Animal character(s) become human and/or vice-versa

Welcome back to my look at the ArchieSonic comic series, and how it shared a lot of the same story tropes as a typical ‘80s or ‘90s syndicated cartoon!

Hey, we're halfway through our 65 episodes! I’ve got a doozy of a topic to talk about today, so let’s not waste any time and just get straight into it:

Episode 33: Animal character(s) become human and/or vice-versa 

I really had to rack my brains over this one, because I just couldn’t think of any examples of this happening at first. The closest I could think of was when Walter Naugus disguised himself as an echidna to trick Knuckles into helping him get the Master Emerald shards.

But that wasn’t so much a transformation as an illusion, and it was from troll to echidna and back again, so not really a human transforming into an animal or vice versa. But then it hit me. Muttski!

You remember Muttski, right? Sonic’s pet dog who was introduced all the way back in issue #0 of the original Sonic mini series only to fall victim to Robotnik’s roboticiser?

He later returned in Sonic #32 as antagonist, programmed to sniff out Sonic’s location. But Uncle Chuck was able to reprogram him and give him back his free will, so from that point on Sonic had a pet dog who just happened to be a robot and often times worked undercover in Robotropolis.

Muttski and Uncle Chuck were later reprogrammed to be mindless slaves again when Robo-Robotnik was introduced as the new villain of the series, but as discussed in an earlier post, the two of them had their free will restored by the Sword of Acorns and decided to stay undercover in Robotropolis again for awhile so that they could get information to Sonic.

Then in Sonic #124 all the robot mobians (aka “robians”) were transformed back to normal by an unknown force, which I’ll get into in more detail later on down the road. So for the next 125 or so issues Muttski was a normal dog again, doing normal dog things like drinking from the toilet (probably)...

talking to Sonic (technically)...

...and trying to murder Tails (it was apparently a misunderstanding?). It was a weird time in the ArchieSonic series. But the weirdest change for Muttski was yet to come. 

Sonic #247 ended with Eggman activating the Super Genesis Wave, rewriting reality and leading into the big 12 issue crossover with Mega Man. But this also served the purpose of creating a narrative reason for the reboot which began in Sonic #252. Because of the legal battle between Archie Comics and former writer Ken Penders, all original comic characters not created by the current comic staff were wiped from existence. Scourge the Hedgehog and all associated characters? Gone. Sonic and Tails’ parents? Gone. The millions upon millions of echidna characters? Gone. Even the ones who were central to the current stories going on in the comic at the time, such as Geoffrey St John, Elias Acorn, and Shard the Metal Sonic had to go. All of them were Thanos-snapped from existence, and a new continuity began. But you know what characters were allowed to stay? Uncle Chuck and Muttski! Because they had both been characters in the SatAM cartoon series, they got the same deal as the Freedom Fighters and were allowed to remain a part of the narrative so long as their designs were updated to fit in better with the modern Sonic style.

Uncle Chuck looked pretty similar to before, but Muttski?

Muttski was redesigned as a mobian and renamed Ben “The Mutt” Muttski, apparently in honour of the late Ben Hurst, one of the main writers of Sonic SatAM. I know this isn’t exactly the same as an animal character becoming human, but this is honestly pretty darn close. Muttski changed from a quadrupedal housepet to a sapient character standing on two feet. For what it’s worth, the pre-reboot comics stated that Mobian DNA contained “a sizable percentage of human DNA,” so it’s arguable that humans and mobians are pretty much the same thing. Although it’s unclear whether or not that fact remained true in the post-reboot comics… but what do you want from me?! I had to come up with something for this entry!

Mega Man 2 is an action game developed and published by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was released in Japan in 1988 and in North America and PAL regions the following years. Mega Man 2 continues Mega Man's battle against the evil Dr. Wily and his rogue robots. It introduced graphical and gameplay changes, many of which became series staples.

Although sales for the original Mega Man were unimpressive, Capcom allowed the team to create a sequel. They worked concurrently on other Capcom projects, using their free time to develop the game, using unused content from the first game. Takashi Tateishi composed the soundtrack, with Yoshihiro Sakaguchi serving as a sound programmer.

Mega Man 2 is the second best selling Mega Man game, with more than 1.51 million copies sold. Critics praised its audio, visuals and gameplay as an improvement over the first game. Many publications rank Mega Man 2 as the best game in the series and one of the greatest video games of all time. The games soundtrack has been considered one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time. It has been featured in game compilations, including Mega Man Legacy Collection for Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, rereleased on mobile phones, and become a part of console emulation services.

After his initial defeat, Dr. Wily, the series' main antagonist, creates his own set of Robot Masters in an attempt to counter Mega Man: Metal Man, Air Man, Bubble Man, Quick Man, Crash Man, Flash Man, Heat Man, and Wood Man. He also constructs a new fortress and army of robotic henchmen. Mega Man is then sent by his creator, Dr. Light, to defeat Dr. Wily and his Robot Masters. During the final fight, Dr. Wily flees into the caves beneath his fortress and when Mega Man follows, attempts to trick Mega Man into thinking he is a space alien, but Mega Man defeats the alien revealing it to be a holographic projection device which malfunctions showing Dr. Wily at the controls. After the scientist begs for mercy, Mega Man spares Wily and returns home.

Mega Man 2 is a platform and action game like its predecessor, Mega Man. The player controls Mega Man as he traverses eight stages to defeat the bosses, Dr. Wily's Robot Masters: Metal Man, Air Man, Bubble Man, Quick Man, Crash Man, Flash Man, Heat Man, and Wood Man. Each Robot Master features a unique weapon and a stage related to their weapon's power. For example, Air Man shoots small tornadoes and is fought in a sky-themed level, while Wood Man can use a shield of leaves and is found in a forest-themed stage. After defeating a boss, their signature weapon becomes available to the player. The Robot Masters have weaknesses to the weapons of certain other Robot Masters; therefore, choosing the order in which the levels are played is a vital component of the gameplay. After completing certain stages, Mega Man receives a special item. These items create platforms that allow Mega Man to access areas that he otherwise could not.

After defeating the eight Robot Masters, the player proceeds to Dr. Wily's fortress, which consists of six levels that are played linearly. As in the first game, the player is required to fight each Robot Master a second time in Dr. Wily's fortress. However, these battles take place in a single room rather than a series of linearly connected rooms. The room contains teleportation devices that lead to each Robot Master. The devices can be entered in any order, but are not labeled. Once the bosses are defeated again, the player must fight Dr. Wily.

Mega Man 2 features a few gameplay changes from the original Mega Man. A new item, the Energy Tank, allows a player to refill Mega Man's health at any time. Also introduced is a password system. After defeating each Robot Master a password is displayed, allowing the player to return to that particular point in the game after restarting the system. The password stores the particular list of completed Robot Masters, as well as the number of accumulated Energy Tanks. Unlike the first game, Mega Man 2 does not feature a score counter, and the player is unable to return to Robot Master levels once completed.

First, some historical perspective. Under Franklin Roosevelt, the maximum marginal income tax rate was a stunning 94%. Even under Lyndon Johnson, it was still 77%. Then along came St. Ronnie's trickle-down nonsense and the top rate plunged to 28%. Since then, it's gone up under Democratic administrations and down with Republican ones.

Currently, the top rate is supposed to be 37% for individual taxpayers with incomes greater than $578,125 ($693,750 for married couples filing jointly). But since the incomes of the super-wealthy derive mainly from compensation tricks like stock options and unrealized capital gains that are taxable at lower rates, the uppermost one percent don't pay near what they ought to.

One such nefarious tax dodger is tech entrepreneur and national menace Elon Musk (pictured above pondering more ways of ruining Twitter). In 2002, Musk founded a small online bank (X.com), which he merged with a larger company (PayPal) and then sold to a still larger one (eBay) for $1.5 billion. Using that money (along with substantial government subsidies) he founded SpaceX and invested in the Tesla car company, becoming its CEO in 2008.

With a total wealth of $180 billion (after buying Twitter) — down from $219 billion last year, but up from only $2 billion ten years ago — Musk is today the second richest person in the world. Yet the effective tax rate he pays on that fortune is a mere 2.1%.

But Musk is not the only obscenely rich dude whose federal income tax rate is way less than yours. Amazon's Jeff Bezos (worth $114 billion) pays only 1.1% of his annual wealth growth. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who's worth $76.8 billion, pays the same. While Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffet ($106 billion) pays even less — a meager 0.1%!

Some suggest imposing an additional wealth tax on the net worth of the mega-rich. Several unions (like the AFL-CIO and AFSCME) and Democratic leaders (including senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders) have endorsed the Ultra-Millionaire Tax Act, which proposes a 2% annual tax on households with a net worth between $50 million and $1 billion, plus a 1% annual surtax on the net worth of those above $1 billion. Says one supporter of the bill, Congressman Brendan Boyle of Idaho,

It is time for the ultra-millionaires to pay their fair share so that critical government programs can be bolstered to help the everyday American.

Republicans are solidly against any sort of wealth tax like this, of course. These are also the people who never stop yammering about the federal budget deficit.
