Michael Beach — Gravity/Repulsion (Goner)
Gravity/ Repulsion (Re-issue) by Michael Beach
When we suffer a loss, or even a disappointment, we are left with a void that we search for some way to fill. On his recently reissued fourth LP, Gravity/Repulsion, Michael Beach covers these holes over with a searing buzz of no-frills rock, with a little help from his friends. “You Were a Mirror” comes galloping out of the gate on the back of drummer Utrillo Kushner (of Comets on Fire and Colossal Yes) who chases down everything the band puts in his path. Ever-bounding, Kushner traces the melody lines of each instrument like he is trying to pin them against the walls of the track, a perfectly pleasant ballpark keyboard refrain included. Beach’s guitar work proves a little too slippery for Kushner to get a handle on, though, coming out of the solo, splintering into a squeal of feedback and evaporating into thin air. “You came around/You were a mirror,” Beach sings in his warm, gruff voice — a near ringer at times for Chris Brokaw — from underneath the racket. “You told me get straight/Before madness sets in.”
Kushner is right back at it again, by design, on the driving “I Never Had Enough Time with You.” One of Beach’s most powerful songs to date, it’s a tribute to lost friends written to play to the strengths of the band. “The looser part in the middle I put in there just to hear [Kushner] play drums as only he can,” Beach told Vice around the time of the album's initial release in 2017. Meanwhile, the song’s main riff began as a boogie-based tribute to bassist Muslim Delgado of Bay Area thrashers, Meercaz. During the opening verse, the California native Beach — who currently calls Melbourne, Australia home — waxes poetic about “a teenage love vanished forever” while a piercing cry of feedback threatens to drown him out. The trio swerves between the nervy, streamlined intensity of The Wipers and the scruffy abandonment of David Nance (whose backing band, fittingly enough, Beach was a member of on a recent tour down-under). The sonic fireball swelling at the song’s center, growing to a fever pitch that’s hard to ignore, finally gives way to Beach’s rippin’ lead as it makes a beeline for the sing-along-with-all-you’ve-got chorus.
Gravity/Repulsion’s second half contains a song nearly its equal in “A Vision of Modern Love,” written on Beach’s favorite subject: the human condition. In this case, the ways we find relief from it. “Tried to find a friend/Tried to forget the War/Tried to take up tripping on foreign shores,” he sings at one point. Despite the song’s jittery, just-gotta-get-through-this energy, and Beach’s fuzzy and fried freakout along the way, Delgado’s hands are steady on the wheel, er, bass, pressing straight on through the storm. The album’s most dramatic moment, arguably, arrives on the final track as Beach puts a comfy cushion on the old piano bench to sing about a heartland everyman named Freddie and his dream of becoming a spaceman. When Freddie sees the ad on television “for the first settlement on Mars,” the song gestures toward Queen-like grandiosity, but instead of shrill theatrics, Beach starts grunt-narrating — Henry Rollins-style — and the song makes its grungy yet jangly ascent.
Clocking in at less than twenty-five minutes, Gravity/Repulsion’s five proper songs are fleshed out by three interludes (the dude loves his interludes, judging by his other work): a droney one, a mournful, wheezy one, and one that evokes Dead Man-era Neil Young. But, in this case, the short runtime isn’t a disappointment; it only adds to the record’s punch. A mini-LP about tough times, Gravity/Repulsion just might help you to endure some of your own. It’s worth a shot at least.

MICHAEL BEACH - I NEVER HAD ENOUGH TIME WITH YOU
youtube
Whilst bouncing around bands from San Fran’s Bay Area the likes of Colossal Yes and Meercaz, Melbourne’s Michael Beach took the time (ironically?) to lay down some licks from his upcoming album Gravity/Repulsion including the energetic single ‘I Never Had Enough Time With You.’ Based on a dream that Beach had that placed him hanging out with some friends who had passed away, the track is a jittery piece of guitar lick-laden goodness. The clip is pretty rad as well, animated by Sophia Mero it’s well worth the watch. Check out the clip above and keep up with all things Michael Beach via his Facebook page here.
