piece based on the idea that Dakota might've started learning guitar to play along with Ashe's drums ^_^ Ambigiously timed but was originally gonna be post s2 (tho their designs here look more s1)
Extras under the cut, as usual :3 AND a VERY detailed ID since this piece is a big one
Detailed ID: a drawing of Dakota Cole and Ashe Winters from Just Roll With It: Prime Defenders, sitting in Ashe’s dorm room.
Ashe is sitting on the bed, with one arm behind her head and the other rested on her stomach, while Dakota is lying on his back on the floor holding an electric guitar, legs kicked up on the bed next to Ashe.
Ashe has white skin, long curly white hair, a few freckles, and is looking down at Dakota with an open mouthed smile. She is wearing a dark purple beanie with pins of Madeline from Celeste, the Welcome to Nightvale logo, and the knight from Hollow Knight partially covered by her hair.
She is also wearing a shirt with the album cover of I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning by Bright Eyes. Over the shirt is Dakota's red flannel. She's wearing black jeans, one black and green sock, and one purple and black sock with cat ears at the top and cat paws at the toes.
Dakota has mid-brown skin with a few moles, and medium lengthed, curly, bright red hair thats splayed out across the floor. his eyes are shut tight and his eyebrows are furrowed, whilst hes smiling widely.
He has a black bandana around his forehead. On his neck is a chain, and attached to that is a purple heart with the letter 'A' on it. He's wearing a white tank top, that exposes his shoulder which features a temporary Ms G tattoo of her face accompanied with the words 'Ms G' in a galaxy pattern.
Dakota's wearing beige shorts, and has another temporary tattoo on his thigh which reads 'Teaching Moment' in galaxy text. his socks are white.
The blue and white electric guitar he's holding has a sticker that says 'Prime defenders' in black and white, and another sticker that says 'Just Roll With It' in gold and purple. At the top of the guitar near the tuning pegs, it reads 'Prime'.
They are in Ashe's dorm room. Her bed has a blue mattress and a green blanket that's pushed against the pillow away from Ashe, and draping off the side of the bed onto the floor. On the part of the blanket that's on the bed, there is a plush of Morgana from Persona 5, and another plush of Bacon Man. On the part of the blanket that's on the floor, there is a Nintendo DS, except with the word 'Primtendo' written on it. On the side of the bed there are 3 stickers; one of Hatsune Miku, one of Mae Borowski from Night In The Woods, and one of Tony's Pizza.
On the purple carpeted floor underneath the bed, theres a cardboard box labelled 'Secrets'. There is also an oval rug that Dakota is lying on that has a green, yellow, blue, and red circular design. ontop of this is a pair of headphones with the wire spiralling across the floor, and an amp that Dakota's guitar is plugged into. the front of the amp has the word Prime where the brand name of an amp would be usually
Next to Ashe's bed is a set of shelves. On the flat side facing the bed, there is a My Chemical Romance poster of the album cover of Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. Under this poster are 3 photos, of Ashe and Dakota ice skating, Ashe and William walking on traintracks, and Ashe and William taking a selfie in bed. Next to these three photos are two school schedules, labelled 'Ashe Winters' Schedule' and 'Vyncent Sol's Schedule'.
On the shelves, the top shelf has a lit candle next to a box of matches. Next to these are 4 books titled 'The Carnival Of Souls', 'Planetary Problems', 'The Purps' and 'Overlord'. The shelf below this has a plant with small white flowers, in a ceramic pot with a blue heart, a red heart, and a purple heart on it. Next to this is a bottle of ibuprofen, and a turned on purple lava lamp. Behind these are more books titled 'The New Generation', 'Island Of Amal- [cut off]', 'Ultraviolent Light', '[cut off] -Don't R- [cut off],' and 'Good Cop, Ghos- [cut off]'
Underneath that shelf is an open drawer with two fairylight chains trailing out. One is in RGB colours and the other is golden. On the closed drawer below that, there is a Welcome to Nightvale sticker.
On the white wall behind Ashe, there is a window to her left. outside the light is golden, and there is a street. Behind Ashe's head is a Thank You Scientist poster of the album Maps Of Non-Existent Places, a Car Seat Headrest poster of the album Twin Fantasy, and a trans flag. There are also messages in smudged ink reading: '[cut off] -ncent was here !!!', 'Ashe. W [cut off] -s here :3', 'DC wus here <3', 'wiwi waz here [ghost doodle]' and 'love u man'
End ID.

In the woods there is a cottage. In the cottage a green witch lives. Her plants are vibrant and cover nearly every surface. Some are hung to dry and some vine wildly along the window edge. Her garden out back is vivid and a rainbow of herbs and flowers, fruits and vegetables. She sits at the table embroidering flowers over torn fabric. Dirt stained hands leaving behind beauty in all she works.

Rationality
The estate was apparently quite smart when it was first built in the late 1960s but it rapidly declined. A once pristine exterior now stands in an overgrown garden littered with shattered glass and rotting wood. A ‘For Sale’ sign is lying in the grass, a jagged poll stands as evidence of its origin. No one’s willing to buy this place. Yellowed paint peeling off of the building while wooden boards hide broken windows. Leading to the entrance was water damaged stairs, splintered and hazardous, I’m careful to watch my footing as I climb the mangled steps. The front door held thin indents, like it had been used as a cat scratcher. I flip through a ring full of keys, looking for the right one to open the rusted lock.
Pushing open the door I’m hit with the stale scent of damp and a cold breeze. It’s dark in the hallway, I flick the light switch, there’s a spark of light then nothing. Great. I pull out a torch from my bag, allowing a beam of light to illuminate the narrow space. The floor was a dark red carpet, while lining the wall was wallpaper that had a pattern of four circles with three circles inside them, of which are various shades of orange, looking as if there trying to meet in the middle. On the left side of the passage was a small table with a vase of long dead flowers, a deep blue rotary dial phone and a phone book. On the right was an ottoman covered in a burnt orange fabric. A little further down there are five doors, four across from each other in pairs, and one near the end of the hall on the left. Oddly, a tall mirror stood at the very end of the hall, the image slightly distorted. Probably the lighting.
I choose the door closest to me on the left to enter, the hinges creaked and groaned. Scanning the room I don’t spot anything interesting. The same deep red carpet and patterned wallpaper encased the medium sized room, housing a floral sofa and armchair with a long hardwood coffee table in the centre. A large box sat on a small table pushed to the wall, a TV, it’s small screen no longer able to play beloved shows. Everything masked in a thick layer of dust. Hanging on the wall above the TV was a framed photo of the family that once lived here. A mother, father and young girl. All dead. A shiver suddenly ran through me, I snap a picture of the dust covered room with my camera before turning hastily to leave the room.
Staying to the left I enter the next door. A blue tiled bathroom, black mould growing on the ceiling and cobwebs draped over the shower head. Taking another picture I’m about to leave but catch a shadow in the mirror. Moving side to side. Swinging. You just moved the torch wrong. I keep the torch still in my hand. Still swinging. Shaking my head I leave the bathroom. Heart beating fast. The last door on the left is separated from the bathroom by a cramped corridor. Masking the walls was many printed photos of the same two people. The father and daughter. Their eyes stare at me. A knot of dread settles in by stomach.
I manage to jerk my head away from the lifeless eyes. No picture. I stalk uneasily toward the next door. Pushing it open I quickly glance around already taking a picture. Bright yellow cupboards wrap around two walls in the small room, allowing just enough room for a paltry table with vibrant orange chairs. Suddenly, a high-pitched hissing sounds from behind me. I swing my head to look. Frantically moving my torch, searching the hall.
Nothing.
However the sound cut off instantly. Must have been the wind. I catch sight of the mirror. The glass seemingly rippling. My hand moves before I can think. Reaching out to touch the waves. My reflection growing more distorted with each surge. Fingers stretching. Face drooping. My mouth contorting into a drawn out smile, teeth visible. I feel my lips pressed together. Pale grey fingers climb onto my shoulder. A cold burst of air is blown onto my neck. I blink and the glass is completely still. My reflection normal. It’s nothing. You’re just tired.
As I shift toward the next door I throw glances back at the mirror. Heart thundering. Come on, two more rooms. I open the next door, swiftly taking a photo. Nearly dead. What? I charged it before I left. Sighing I observe the simply decorated room full of dark wood furniture and dull colours, only pale pink flowers on the quilt of a double bed. A few framed photos dotted around, all blurry. I leave the room, stalking to the last door.
The handle is somewhat jammed, so it opens with a jolt. I’m met with the vision of many dolls facing the doorway. They sit stiffly on a shelf, some on a rocking chair, one neatly on the bed. It’s laid on its side, head resting atop a dusty pillow. Pristine plated brown hair. It’s glossy blue eyes looking blankly at me.
The hissing begins again. Louder. I spin a full circle seeing nothing. Yet the hissing grows louder, more insistent. I shakily go to take a picture. You have a job to finish. It’s dead. The light from my torch goes out. It tumbled out of my hand.
Somehow the lights start to flicker. That’s not possible. A cold wind rushes past. In the hallway I step backwards towards the front door. Keeping my gaze on the mirror.
A pale figure with long dark hair creeps over to me. It’s neck broken, snapped to the side.
“OUT!” A mangled voice demanded. Lunging at me.
Hastily I find the handle and stumble out of the house. Its pouring outside. Lightning strikes in the distance. I run as fast as possible down the damaged stairs and through the garden. Tripping I look back. The lights are off and the figures gone. Still I clamber into my car, blood rushing in my ears, heart pounding in my chest. I turn on the car, hit the accelerator and drive off.

“DAH!! Y-YOU AWOKENED UP EARLY! I-I mean you woke up early! S-Sorry, I’ll go ahead and leave you to it..!” (Waking Early)
C2:
“I wonder why it is they asked me to do this... surely there are others far more important for the task. Hm.. what a peaceful sleeper you are...”
“Gah! I-I didn’t think you’d wake up like that...! I-I’m really sorry, I didn’t disturb you with my idle ramblings did I?”
“GUH- GREAT GRACIOUSNESS! D-Don’t sit up so suddenly like that! I thought you were some kind of undead, Divine One!” (Waking Early)
B1:
“Divine One! O-Oh! They’re asleep! I should shut up! Or... maybe I shouldn’t shut up? Sir Vander did ask that I wake you after all... Hmm....”
“Maybe if I bang together some pots and pans like ma used to... AH! H-How long have you been awake Divine One? You frightened me..!”
“Aha! You’re up and at em anyway! Perfect! Now I don’t have to decide whether I need to rouse you or not!” (Waking Early)
B2:
“Ah, sleeping as per usual I see... Reminds me of when I too spent most of my days sick in a bed... I’m sorry I got so flustered last we spoke, It’s just... so frustrating...”
“O-Oh! Divine One! N-No I wasn’t saying anything, just coming to check in on you like everyone else in the army seems to do!”
“Eep! D-Divine One! H-How much of that did you hear exactly? How embarrassing... I-I’ll just be taking my leave now...” (Waking Early)
A1:
“Huh... It’s not even my turn to wake you up and yet I find myself coming here anyways... I suppose you’ve got that kind of effect on people though... especially me... You’re a good person, Divine One...”
“Good morning..! I hope you slept well... W-What do you mean I didn’t get startled this time? I-Is it wrong that I’m getting comfortable around you now?”
“Huh? You’re already awake? Aha, well now that you’re up why don’t I show you some more of my current crafts I’m working on?” (Waking Early)
A2:
“Hey there, Divine One... I just wanted to thank you for what you did... and those kind words you said... You’ve become very important to me, so I hope no one as wonderful as you ever has to go through a sickness like mine...”
“Ah... You must’ve heard all of that right? That’s a little embarrassing, but for some reason I don’t really mind either... Please always take care of yourself, Divine One.”
“Oh...! Sorry, my worrisome carrying on must’ve woken you... Y-You don’t mind? It’s a relief to hear you say that, my friend.” (Waking Early)
P1:
“Hello Divine One... Uh well... I suppose if we’re partners now I should be calling you something different, right? Something more endearing I guess? Maybe.. Hello d-d-darling? N-No that’s so embarrassing..!”
“Ah! Darling, did you hear all of that!? W-Wait ‘darling’!? I-I meant to say Divine One! Honest! Oh no... I’m just as nervous as when we first met...!”
“Oh! Good morning D-D-Da-Dar-vine One! Huh? W-What was I really about to say you ask? Um... how about we talk about something else for a little while?” (Waking Early)
P2:
“Feels strange entering this place as your beloved partner rather than just being on wake-up duty again... Ah... and you’re wearing the ring that I made you too... Th-That’s fine, I can keep my cool... b-but you’re just so... so...
“So sweet..! G’oh-! I’m sorry for stirring you..! I guess I can admit I got a little worked up seeing you wearing my ring... but as you can see, I’ve gotten your ring with me as well..! I feel at ease just knowing that a bit of you is always with me, you know what I mean?”
“Ah! Y-You gave me a start, partner..! I suppose that’s my fault for getting a little distracted though... how about we go walk together now that you’re up?” (Waking Early)

I have arrived to put numbers in your ask box:
3, 5, 11, 21, 26, and 28
ahh heck all these numbers, alright here we go!
3. Biggest Strength hmm. i'd say if anything, my patience? having worked in retail for so long, i've learned to be extremely patient and understanding in a lot of different contexts that i wouldn't have been able to be over a decade ago. i think that's been particularly helpful not just in my professional life but in my personal as well. beyond that, i think i can be pretty quick witted and funny occasionally? 🤷♂️
5. Favourite band this changes constantly 🙃 i can't even name a single band for certain today. the fall of troy? will wood and the tapeworms? the mars volta? anamanaguchi? i'll just throw those out there and say they're definitely contenders lol
11. Favourite flower all purpose
no uhhhh, idk. never been too big on flowers, honestly. i think sunflowers are really neat though
21. A random fact Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles for the sega genesis were originally planned to be a single video game. however, due to time constraints, and partly due to a brand deal with mcdonalds, they chose to push out the first half of the game as sonic 3 to meet deadlines, and release the second half of the game as Sonic and Knuckles later in the year, with the added bonus of being able to open the top of the cartridge and connect into Sonic 3 to form one single combined game.
this is genuinely the first random fact that came to my head.
i really, really liked sonic a lot as a kid lol. there, that's a much simpler random fact.
26. What I love about myself i love that even though my formative years were spent being very pessimistic, isolated, spiteful, and kindof overall feeling like a broken person, i've grown into a much more optimistic, accepting, friendly person in spite of it. i'm always working on it, but i try to be mindful of how i come across, and aware of how my behaviors and actions can impact others.
i also love my endless and effortless swag, rizz, and drip
28. Favourite book in all honesty? i don't really read. i know i should, i really should, but there's already so much content in other mediums that i'm already invested in that i haven't been able to carve out time for, and i have no idea where i'd even start with picking up reading at this point.
if comics/graphic novels are allowed, i really enjoyed the Scott Pilgrim series. outside of that, i really enjoyed John Dies At The End back in the early/mid 2010s?

Love =>< Love is a piece with repurposed materials
Materials
Sheet of plastic +- A3 which used to be in a photo frame: Imprint Love Love in pink
Another sheet with orange and red flowers which was already wrinkled
Cardboard pieces of a coolblue box
Paper tea bags
a piece of cord
charcoal
a receipt
gel medium
black paint
water
a wood burn stamp
glue
Meaning
It's a piece meant to represent struggle, tears , uneven playfield, rage, depression… and cheekiness, hidden meaning, layers in the literal and figurative sense.
It mostly represents my own journey of liberty, freedom to do as you please, freedom to express emotions, freedom to be, freedom to love or not love, to make our own choices. As simple as these seem, mentally I have had limited freedoms, limited by beliefs, stereotypes, ideals and roles that are imposed.
The struggle is portrayed in the ripping of the paper and chaotically placing it all over the artwork. It could also be perceived in the piece of cord. It has light and black parts representing illness or mental illness versus life that falls lightly. Even the burning of the edges of the thin paper represents struggle and internal pain. The darkness represents the heaviness of feelings. In this piece the darkness is clearly portrayed and not hidden to show it to the world. It’s not sugar coated, actually quite the opposite as the canvas is sprinkled with salt. Salt is known to keep safe, and is sprinkled to protect the subject of the feelings of further harm. The uneven structure of the cardboard is highlighted in black charcoal to better show it. This piece is all about telling, showing, not hiding. Yet the layers and black do conceal some of the work. It represents the freedom to feel and to heal. In our society, feeling bad feelings is not yet widely accepted, it is deemed uncomfortable for the other person to see you struggle with ‘bad feelings’. There are no bad feelings. Once felt they melt away so hiding them has no use but to keep someone else comforted. The colors in this work are familiar to those who know. Soft pink, orange and red are significant markers of the freedom to love. They also give the piece a soft feminine vibe amongst the harsh black and still abundant white and cream. The teabags represent cheekiness. The yellow gives them a happy touch. Some of the words are still readable. "Partagez ce avec", "for everyone", enjoy", "rgy". Of course they also represent what's wrong with our world, our history and what contributes to our mental health. The wealthy enjoy their tea while it's harvested with a tremendous amount of labor and shipped across the world in containers. Our comfort is created by the work of others. Our luxury is someone else’s misery. To reinforce that, the label of the shipped box is visible. Postmen are also known to work on a killing schedule while other people enjoy having their goods delivered to their doorstep. The handwritten receipt is reminiscent of old times, but also reinforces that message that money is everywhere. The receipt might also signify deception. Nowadays all receipts are typed out, to keep track of sales for government taxes. Is this a sign of tax fraud? Who is hit the hardest by tax fraud? The other workers who miss out on benefits because of it? Or the ones inning taxes? Are honest people at a disadvantage because of it? One thing is certain, we are all at a disadvantage when the ones with big incomes don't pay taxes. Wealth is distributed unevenly, people aren’t able to afford a comfortable living anymore. Were we ever? Are we too dangerous to the ruling power when we could? Actual freedoms seem to disappear worldwide. Mental freedoms become more important? Love is one of those, love comes in many forms. Friends, lovers, community, pets (weird way to handle animals, they are caged and not there in free will, even though I have a cat). Pets signify or need to control everything as humans. We are afraid of how unhinged things would be if they roam freely. Same goes for humans, the ruling class is afraid of how free we would be and how we wouldnt give a fuck about them and they would lose control.
This work is subconsciously influenced by the collage classes in my painting class, the unhinged tv show I saw yesterday wie zoekt die wint, and the abstract work of some of my painting friends and coworkers/ co-artists like Lluis salvador sanchez, Han coussement, Joke derycke and examples in the painting classes. And probably more given the subconscious part.
The title love =>< love could be a reference to the love is love queer slogan. But the >< signs also imply a clash. I interpret this in a way that hetero love is portrayed everywhere but once there’s a drop of queer love visible, it is a problem for some, and the abundant love all of a sudden needs to shrink.

Who is most artistic in FGG (Besides Lukas?)
I might have answered this question before, or maybe a similar one at one point. I can't remember, so just in case I'll answer it anyway:
Evan: There's not an artistic bone in this man's body. He draws like a 3-year-old. He sucks at making up stories. He can't cook without setting his kitchen on fire. He has no fashion sense and his house looks like it was decorated by wild animals.
Lukas: Obviously has raw talent, but also went to art school so he has high technical skill as well. He likes to paint and write poetry the most, but he has a knack for lots of other creative endeavors like sculpting, interior design, and storytelling too. Dude's just gifted in the arts.
Glenvar: He whittles animals out of wood and bone, but he does this more for religious reasons than anything. I wouldn't say Glenvar is all that "creative". He's barely literate so he can't write, and when he draws, it's usually just symbols for religious rituals. He likes to cook, though he mostly pulls from cookbooks and rarely makes up his own recipes.
Alaine: Alaine is a talented songwriter and musician. I don't imagine her being a particularly good drawer or sculptor or anything, but she seems to have a decent fashion sense at least. She's also good at making up stories on the fly.
Jeimos: Jeimos secretly writes fanfiction, but frankly, they are terrible at it. All their creativity goes into their engineering projects, that's where they shine the brightest. They can draw schematics and complicated arcane sigils, but ask them to draw a portrait of someone and you'll probably get a stick figure.
Isaac: This kid doodles. A lot. On everything. In the series he has scribbled on walls, floors, newspapers, and even on his own boots and weapons. Isaac draws stupid little pictures just to make people smile, not to make an artistic statement or anything. He's pretty good at making up stories. He has a creative spirit, but very little skill.
Linde: Linde is very artistic, and she expresses her artistry mostly through fashion. She even has a side hustle making custom clothing. She also has an interest in interior design and baking too.
Balthazaar: Balthazaar strikes me as the kind of guy who doesn't seem artistic at first, but if you asked him to draw you something, he'd doodle up a pretty decent cartoon. In one story he mentions that his father was a barber, and while Balthazaar didn't officially follow in his footsteps, he does do a surprisingly good job dressing himself and styling his long beard when he tries. I think his depression and insecurity holds him back, but with some motivation Balthazaar could be a hair stylist or something.
Skel: Skel is not a creative individual. I mean, he can come up with some pretty unique insults, but the creativity ends there...
Javaan: It seems like Javaan has a sharp fashion sense, but actually he just asks Linde what to wear every day. His creativity is expressed in the elaborate stories and lies he tells, and the get-rich-quick schemes he comes up with.
Elska: While Elska is a creative, out-of-the-box thinker, this doesn't really translate to art for her. She can't write, she's too honest and grounded in reality to make up stories, and she can only draw primitive stick figures.
Mr. Ocean: Mr. Ocean is quite artistic in a lot of mediums. Most notably music, drawing, and spellcrafting. He also seems interested in fashion, even if his attempts at dressmaking didn't go so well...
Zeffer: I think Zeffer is creative in a devious sense, like he can think of a million ways to assassinate someone and make it look like an accident. And I think he has an eye for beauty, in that he appreciates beautiful things like flowers. But he's not really "artistic" in any way.
Examining all this, I'm going to say that the most artistic Freelance Good Guys are Lukas, Linde, Mr. Ocean, and Alaine. This one really made me think and realize some interesting things about these characters, thanks for the question!

The Journey of a Novice Weed Grower: From Seeds to Harvest
Exploring the World of Home Cannabis Cultivation
What if I told you that it’s no longer necessary to suffer from “anxiety” or “migraines.” That you can dispense with finding innocuous emojis to help launder those quarterly $60 Venmo payments to your “friend” from college. That the days of relying on the charity of an elderly in-law undergoing cancer treatment have passed.
While the City of Fredericksburg will hold Earth Day festivities on Saturday, for many of us April 20 has always signified a different — if not wholly unrelated — holiday.
As of July 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed into law 4.1-1101, making it legal for a person over the age of 21 to cultivate up to four marijuana plants “for personal use.”
A year later, I decided to take our fine legislators at their word.
youtube
The Journey Begins
It started with a white envelope, no larger than a business card, with the words “Banana OG” scrawled on the front in red pen. Inside were approximately 20 seeds, generously gifted by a fellow teacher at my wife’s former school.
My dad always likes to proclaim that the internet is “the seat of all knowledge,” and when it came to growing weed, he was absolutely correct. The first stop on my informational journey was r/microgrowery, a subreddit dedicated to the small-scale cultivation of cannabis. Inside the community’s sidebar, you’ll find a “beginner’s guide.”
At this point, I find it necessary to make a few disclosures. I’m not exactly a novice when it comes to growing things.
Each summer, the small strip between my driveway and fence line teems with tomatoes, peppers, and — when the pollination gods gaze favorably upon me — zucchini and other assorted squashes (including an accidental pumpkin patch whose harvest coincided nicely with this past Halloween!). My herb garden stands as a testament to the potency of Fredericksburg’s feral cat colonies as fertilizer (wish I were joking).
I largely understand sunlight, water, airflow and soil as a growing medium.
So, in March 2022, I asked myself: “How different could weed be?” The next six months would hold the answer to my folly.
The Germination Process
Back to the white envelope.
I plunked a few seeds into a mason jar filled with tap water, having first allowed the water to sit undisturbed for a day to allow any chlorine to dissipate. The idea here is to soften the seed’s outer shell to expedite the germination process.
After approximately 48 hours, I saw one of the seeds start to… do something. A taproot had emerged. From there, I followed the advice on r/microgrowery of putting the primed seed in a disposable cup with a small amount of potting soil and placing it under a cheap plant light.
These nascent stages of life took root in my wood-paneled “three-season porch,” a room so thickly layered with tobacco as to resemble the age rings of a tree trunk. It felt like the right place for the seedy task at hand.
If you glean nothing else from this column, remember this: marijuana plants have two stages.
Vegetative stage begins when seeds sprout. Fan leaves develop and the plant, well, grows. It needs at least 18 hours per day of continuous light (up to as many as 24 hours) during this stage.
Each time the plant outgrows its container, you simply transplant it to a larger one.
The second stage is flowering. This can be triggered in one of two ways. If you’re growing indoors (usually in a reflective tent with a dedicated lighting setup), you switch to a 12/12 cycle, with 12 hours of light and 12 hours of total darkness.
By contrast, I didn’t have the space to grow indoors. Actually, I’m lying. As I’m wont to do when acquiring a new hobby, I “invested,” purchasing a cheap grow tent and lighting rig off Amazon.
As I write this, the box has sat unopened for three years.
The Art of Stealth Growing
Virginia’s law states that a home grower must “ensure that no marijuana plant is visible from a public way without the use of aircraft, binoculars, or other optical aids.”
In June I parked my plant, which had grown to occupy a five-gallon planter by this point, on the concrete slab next to the shed in my backyard. The denizens of Stuart Street were none the wiser as to my operation. To be clear, it’s one plant we’re talking about here.
Like Fight Club, the first rule of growing weed is you do not talk about growing weed. Silence is theft prevention at its finest. (Side note: it also aids your cause when every adjacent neighbor is 4/20 friendly, and, in one case, doing their own parallel grow).
Your weed plant needs training to be a good girl. And she must be a girl; at the first detection of male pollen sacs — which are a bit too on the nose as a gender identifier — the plant becomes instant trash. Training can consist of tying branches down or topping, a process that involves cutting off the top of a stalk to split it into two new ones.
I knew none of this during my maiden voyage.
Instead of a sturdy, bushy, plant tailored to maximize yield, I grew a marijuana tree. Seriously, by the time the changing of the seasons triggered flowering, it stood more than three feet tall and required a creative scaffolding of string and tomato cages to prevent it from collapsing under its own weight.
The Harvest
Fast forward a few months. An early November frost has turned my plant’s fan leaves from army green to a pleasing shade of purple. It’s time to chop.
I know this because, for weeks, I’d been using a jeweler’s loupe (basically a pocket magnifying glass) to check the trichomes on my plant’s buds. Trichomes look like dew drops; they’re very pretty. During the flowering stage, they change color from clear to cloudy to amber.
Depending on the desired effect, you chop between cloudy and amber. My harvest was closer to the cloudy end of the spectrum, as I was worried about powdery mildew due to fluctuating humidity levels and figured better-safe-than-shortness-of-breath.
I’d arrayed newspaper broadsheets (and we had no shortage of it due to my employer at the time) on our picnic table and had at the ready a standard-issue pair of Fiskars scissors. A third accessory that came in handy was a pair of gardening gloves — sticky icky is a rather crude but apt description for the not-yet-finished product.
The process as I elected to go about it is referred to as a “wet trim,” since it’s done before the buds are dried. I started with the large fan leaves, placing them in a bowl as I went. If you’re into hemp products, this is the material used to make goods.
The racks of a food dehydrator work nicely for drying the buds, a process that takes anywhere from one to two weeks with a fan running constantly for ventilation. This stage and the subsequent cure took place in my home’s second novelty space, a poorly retrofitted darkroom my wife and I refer to as the “murder room.”
And let me tell you, I killed it on my first try. After curing the dried buds in Mason jars for an additional two weeks (good things come to those who wait), my first harvest came in at a whopping *redacted for legal reasons* grams.
It’s been nearly two years, and the conception and subsequent writing of this column has served to reawaken my holiday spirit.
Who knows, maybe in a damp paper towel somewhere, seeds of future inspiration lie in wait.
Happy 420.
