48 for Maxine, Volker, Xena and the Kids :D
48. What does their room look like?
Baa-sama: Very long answers here yo so everything is under the cut~
Maxine: A room that can occupy three people in it and will make you feel calm because of all the damn blue. Her bed is blue, so are her pillows and blankets, the bookshelf that has her sketchbooks and other art materials is blue; even the fucking walls are blue. Her closet is filled with black and blue clothing, as well as her boots. All of her underwear and bras are also in there (don’t ask why she hangs her bras and panties, she’s fucking weird like that). There’s also an art chamber she has that is hidden within her room, it’s like a walk in closet but one that leads to an open circular space with three long windows and four bookshelves. Overall it’s not even messy (ignore her laundry pile) and organized leaving a lot of space open, she even has a balcony if she wants to enjoy some fresh air.
Volker: His room is about the size of three living rooms, that’s only because of his 15 pets that he has, don’t worry he makes it work somehow. All of his pets do have a special room that they’re allowed to play in. Has a large king sized bed made for MAXIMUM COMFORT. All the pillows, sheets, and blankets are black, white and grey with some animal pillows for his pets to sit on. A oak wood coffee table with a leather couch, a medium sized locked up storage area for his chainsaw, lollipops and liquor. His clothes are all kept in a dresser and are folded n e a t l y (for fuck’s sake do not touch). He has also has a fireplace in there too, just in case if he’s ever bored or more salty than usual then he can burn things. Very few windows in there, he hates them. There’s also a stripper pole in there...Don’t ask why. Surprisingly there’s no dust in that room.
Xena: What is a room? Bed? Nah, don’t need that shit cause fuck it. The walls are a dark red with an ornate golden design. It looks more like an office than room to be honest, there’s an office meeting table with beautiful and elaborate handcrafted chairs if you wish to discuss business with her. Also has no fucking windows at all, she does not like having people look into her room; oh by the way, it's in the middle of the mansion. Why? Because she’s THE BOSS that’s why. She has a walk in closet that is filled to the brim with Gothic clothing, with just a small section of modern clothing. Do not touch her red heels, they’re expensive as fuck. Just don’t touch anything of hers because everything in her rooms is E X P E N S I V E to make your bank account scream.  Also has a walk in private bathroom where she only showers but will spend about two hours bathing in blood too. It is always given top priority care first and kept clean 24/7, you won’t find any dust or trash in there at all.
Abriel: Imagine if Subaru’s room and Maxine’s room combined together, then there you go. His room is pretty large and spacious, with an entertainment stand for his TV and big ass collection of games. There’s a desk not to far from his bed, which has his laptop some notebooks; pens and other miscellaneous things (i.e. his tarot deck). His closet is the definition of minimalism, has a bunch of shirts with graphic designs on them and skinny pants with a lot of boots too, let’s not forget his knives :D and a small storage area where he keeps his stolen snacks from Christa hidden. His bed can fit four people in it and it’s like sleeping on a cloud~ No wonder his sisters like laying on it so much. His room is more of a dark blue and he has painted the walls looking like a galaxy that makes you never wanna leave his room.
Christa: Pink and big...Pink, lace, ribbons, bows, and cute things everywhere. It’s the personification of magical girl aesthetic. Her room is honestly mistaken for being a younger girl’s room but once you see the big ass pile of snacks hidden in EVERY FUCKING CORNER of her room, you know it’s Christa’s. Even her clothes scream cute and adorable, she also has a beautiful vanity with a mirror that has some make up, more snacks, a pretty brush and  other little accessories. Has three bookcases full everything you can possibly imagine; books, snacks again, cute plushies, stuff from her kouhai and friends. For the love of everything unholy, never ask to see her closet; it’s full of clothing so cute that you’ll end up being her test dummy to try on the newest cute clothes she got. Her bed is also pink in a canopy style with curtains and has two pink fluffy sheep plushies.
Cherie: A medium sized room with lilac colored walls, a twin sized bed with patterned sheets and blankets; as well as a medium size coffee table where she works on her origami and puzzles. Her ceiling is full of paper cranes hanging from there, she loves them a lot. A bookcase that has puzzles, more origami paper, a skull paperweight, her collection of rocks and her journal. Her closet is filled with a variety of clothes, yes even those horrid dresses she hates with every fiber of her being. She has a lot of beanies, some have buttons on them. Because her hair is a complete mess and overall hates brushing her hair, Cherie’s vanity and mirror are covered with her things-Christa or Maxine usually fix her hair from time to time. She also has a notebook hidden under her bed, it contains “research” that she does when observing Abriel and his friends (she’s judging them okay and plans out when she can have fun with her bro).

Ch. 6, Pt. 1: The White Boat - Xi Ming
The seat behind the steering wheel was empty. The driver stood in the sand next to an old man in a white robe. As I walked up the aisle toward the front door of the bus, I looked out the window at the two men. The white robe covering the torso, arms, and legs of the old man was a stark contrast with the black skin of his face and hands. Each time the white-robed man made a comment, he flashed a broad smile at the younger man, who not long before had brought the bus to a halt on a flat, sandy lot near Podor’s principal tourist attraction, a 19th century French fort. The trip, which had begun in St. Louis 120 miles to the south, had lasted five hours due to detours on narrow, often bumpy, sometimes unpaved roads. But it was done.
I stopped at the top of the stairwell leading down to the open door and the arid landscape. As I looked at the sandy ground, I could feel the heat rising. I glanced at my digital watch. 6:47PM. I became aware of a fatigue in my head, neck, and shoulders.
Lomax remained sitting in his seat in the fifth row of the bus, bent over his laptop. I shifted my gaze back to the open door, looking into the twilight. The last rays of a setting sun, I hoped, would give way to a cooler darkness.
The two African men standing in the sand began talking louder, making gestures with their hands. The older man was giving advice, I thought, to the younger man, who looked not only tired but also irritated.
Behind the men at the edge of the river, I could see the large boat, the Bou el Mogdad, a 200-foot-long vessel which had five levels featuring an indoor restaurant, outdoor lounge, two bars, a massage room, and a pool.
I carried my backpack in one hand and, in the other, an iPhone, with which I had just finished sending text messages to Washington, D.C., and Accra, Ghana. Macky with assistance from two crew members from the Bou el Mogdad already had moved the large luggage from bus to boat. All of the tour-group members, with the exception of Lomax, Hercule, and Delphine, had boarded the boat.
Lomax closed the laptop, stood up, and inserted his computer and camera into a large backpack. I noticed the white Styrofoam box, which now held 12 empty bottles of beer, occupying a seat in the row behind him. The Fulani man who worked as the day-shift manager at Hôtel de La Résidence had told us to leave the box with empty bottles on the bus. He would pick them up when the driver returned to Rue Blaise Diagne in the French colonial quarter.
“I just finished organizing all of the images I took on the way here,” Lomax said, adjusting the straps of his backpack. “I noticed two photos of the Chinese man at the airport and one of him at the Lampsar Lodge.”
Bou el Mogdad
Lomax glanced back at Hercule, who was asleep in his seat on the aisle in the fourth row. In the seat next to him, Delphine was turning the page of a paper-back book. She looked up, glancing from Lomax to me.
“I have a feeling we’ll see him again,” Lomax added, referring to the Chinese man while glancing out the open door at the two Africans standing in the twilight. The two men were staring back at us. They wanted to know what we were still doing on the bus. Only then did I realize the driver was waiting for us to leave so he himself could leave.
Suddenly, Hercule opened his eyes, jerking his head up. He looked at his wife, who closed her book and put it into a bag on the floor next to her feet.
“Shall we step down from the bus and get on the boat now?” Delphine asked in French, placing a hand on Hercule’s arm. “I wanted to let you sleep,” she said. “I knew you were tired and needed the rest.” Hercule broke into a wide grin when he noticed Lomax and me.
“Go on ahead,” Delphine said in English, looking at Lomax and me also. “We’ll join you on the boat soon.”
Outside the hot, dry air of the desert night enveloped everyone. I set my backpack down in the sand in front of the two African men, removed a 1,000-CFA-franc bill from the pouch hanging from my neck, and handed the bill to the younger man. Lomax, too, following closely, extended a bill toward the driver. It was he, not the old man, who flashed a broad smile.
“Hurry up!” a voice shouted in English. “Dinner in 45 minutes!”
I looked up. Madeleine stood on the top level of the boat, looking down. She had a cocktail in one hand. With her other hand, she grasped a white, metal railing. Next to Madeleine stood Sylvie, who also had a cocktail in one hand. Sylvie, though, was looking over her shoulder. She appeared to be talking with someone behind her I couldn’t see.
Lomax and I stepped onto the narrow ramp connecting the sandy wharf to the large boat. Macky waited, one foot on the edge of the boat, the other on the ramp.
“Follow me,” Macky said in English, turning into a passageway which was open to the desert air and extended the length of the first level of the boat. He started to go up a staircase to a second level. He paused, though, seemingly struggling to find the words he wanted. Finally, switching to French, he said, “I already placed your luggage in your room.”
“Where’s your room?” Madeline shouted, still looking down. “Come to the bar on the top deck and have a lemon and gin cocktail!”
Two Men
But Lomax and I already had crossed the ramp and started following Macky up the wooden staircase. The light from the setting sun still illuminated the orange, pink, and blue pastels of the colonial buildings facing the wharf, though, revealing a stark contrast with the deep green of the river and the light green of a lone palm tree here and there along the river bank.
“Your room is on the third level overlooking the pool,” Macky said, glancing over his shoulder and smiling. It was clear he approved of our choice of accommodation. Of course, as I knew, the room was assigned to us by accident.
“It’s hot, Macky,” Lomax replied. “We’ll just put our packs down in the room, and then you can show us the bar on the top deck.” Lomax paused, looking to his left at the flat, sandy field where the bus had been parked not even a minute before. It was gone. It seemed almost impossible. The driver, apparently, had moved the bus silently away from the wharf and somewhere near the old fort, which was now a museum.
At the top of the stairs, Macky turned right onto the second level of the boat, and Lomax and I followed him down another passageway which also was open to the desert air and extended the length of the boat. When we reached the end of the passageway, we encountered another set of stairs, this one of made of steel and painted white.
“Your room is right there,” Macky said, pointing to the top of the white stairs and starting to move up them. The young man, who was no older than 20 but who could have been as young as 17, glanced over his shoulder and smiled at us again.
I took the key to the room from Macky, slipped it into the lock on the door made of beautifully polished wood, and pushed open the door. I stepped into the room. I felt Macky by my side. But Lomax was nowhere to be seen. He had disappeared down the narrow passageway in the direction of another set of stairs, which, I assumed, led to the bar on the top deck, open to the night air.
I understood immediately the reason Lomax had pushed ahead to the bar on the top deck, where Madeleine and Sylvie drank lemon and gin cocktails in the cooler night air. Inside the room, it was hotter than hell. The two beds, though, with their light red satin covers and their white sheets and pillow cases, appeared freshly laundered, almost elegant in the soft light of the dying day. The state room, called the front luxury suite by the river-boat company, was spacious and attractive, unlike the musty, run-down room at our previous resting place, Hôtel de La Résidence, in St. Louis.
No one had turned on the air conditioning, and heat from the desert sun, beating down all day long, had filled the room. I flipped a switch by the door. A whirling sound started up. It came from a large AC unit in one corner of the room. Immediately, a blast of cold air pierced the layers of hot air. Macky opened his mouth, clapped his hands, and bowed from the waist.
Suite, Bou el Mogdad
I put two bills in Macky’s hand, turned around, and exited the room, following in Lomax’s footsteps and leaving the room on the 3rd level of the boat under the young porter’s supervision.
Hurrying up the stairs and looking down to my right at the sandy wharf and a narrow strip of two-story, faded-yellow buildings outlined in the dim, dusty light, I slipped on the 2nd step from the top and banged my shin and nearly fell to my knees. At the top of the stairs looking down at me and standing just in front of Madeleine was a medium-sized black man with closely cropped hair and a round face who reached down and with surprising strength pulled me upright again in one motion.
Embarrassed by my mistake and shocked by a sharp pain, I hurriedly stood up on the deck, allowing myself to be distracted by the view before me: a beautifully restored, white boat on a tranquil, green river next to a golden, desert town.
“Did you hurt yourself?” Madeleine asked in a soft voice. “These metal stairs are slippery at times. They can be dangerous.”
“No, I didn’t hurt myself,” I replied, realizing I was on the verge of collapsing in pain but attempting to ignore the pain and minimize the accident to Madeleine and any other witness to the event.
I examined the face of the black man, who guided me to a chair at a table next to a bar. The entire area was lit up by small, yellow light bulbs attached at intervals to the waist-high white railing enclosing the top deck. I recognized the man who now began talking to me.
“Something cold to drink?” asked Baaba Maal, the most famous musician in West Africa. His English was not bad. “Cocktail with fruit juice and ice? Beer?”
Over Baaba Maal’s shoulder I could see Madeleine wearing a sleek white dress with patterns of crimson and gold. Behind Madeleine and towering over her, Sylvie, her dark face displaying an expression of concern, stared at my leg. When I looked down at my right leg, I saw a patch of blood expanding across the fabric of my pants below my knee. Then I felt the pain.
“Let’s take a look,” said Sylvie, a doctor in Combs-la-Ville, a suburb of Paris. She squatted in front of me and lifted the nylon fabric of my right pants’ leg up to my knee. “The cut is about half an inch deep and three inches long, causing a rather large flow of blood,” she commented, accepting a towel from the bartender, who had rushed over upon seeing Baaba Maal and Sylvie bent over me. “You need to lie down,” she added, looking into my face for a moment before glancing to one side of the deck and pointing at a couch next to the railing, “and we need to elevate your leg on that couch.”
Sylvie picked me up and carried me toward the couch on which the Chinese couple sat holding glasses of red wine. The thought occurred to me that beyond the couch on the other side of the railing lay the river 30 feet below. It would be a long drop if I accidentally rolled off the couch and tumbled through the railing. The moon, I noticed, was rising in the east over its reflection on the water.
Top Deck, Bou el Mogdad
Sylvie—her athleticism was obvious—carried me to the couch in two strides.
“Merci,” Sylvie said as the Chinese woman and Chinese man quickly stood up from the couch, stepped away from it, and stood watching. Then Sylvie, lowering me gently onto the couch, uttered a statement in Mandarin. She must have thought she was back in Beijing during her adolescence as she addressed the Chinese couple and, at the same time, a rapidly growing sense of urgency.
The Chinese woman and the Chinese man looked at each other in surprise, and the man spoke words in Mandarin to the woman. She responded with her own words in Mandarin, and then she shrugged.
“I’m a doctor,” the Chinese woman said, now lapsing into French for addressing Sylvie. The Chinese doctor had turned her head to address Sylvie. Now she turned it back to address the Chinese man. “My assistant, Mr. Huang, and I will clean your friend’s leg, and I will sew up the wound. If I give you a syringe and some morphine, can you inject him?”
Sylvie responded in Mandarin to the Chinese couple before switching to French.
“I don’t have my medical bag with me,” Sylvie said to Madeleine. “It’s in our room,” she continued, removing a key from her pocket and handing it to her friend. “Can you send Macky to bring the bag to me?”
Madeleine tossed the key to Macky, standing next to the bartender a few feet from the couch.
“There’s no time,” the Chinese woman said in English, coming close to me and looking into my face. “He is going into shock. We have our medical bag with us. You don’t need your bag.”
I was losing consciousness.
“Do you want a shot for the pain?” the Chinese woman asked, still speaking in English and looking into my face. I couldn’t focus on what she said. I didn’t reply. Although I tried to speak, I couldn’t.
The Chinese man stepped forward.
“My colleague, Xi Ming, is a surgeon,” the man said, using English. “Also a major in the People’s Liberation Army. She has performed thousands of operations and has enjoyed great success.” He repeated his words, this time speaking in French.
I felt cold. My vision grew dim.
“Here is our medical bag,” the Chinese man said in English, placing a thick leather valise into the hands of the Chinese woman. “I’m trained in trauma care as well. I carry all of our medical supplies in this bag.”
The Chinese woman, a short, slender person, took the bag, opened it, and pulled out a roll of gauze and a vial of antiseptic. She gave the items to the Chinese man, and he started to clean my leg after rolling up the pants leg above my knee. Then she took out a syringe and a vial from the leather bag and handed them to Sylvie.
French Woman
“You can give him a shot of morphine,” the Chinese woman said to Sylvie, who started to fill the syringe. “I will prepare to sew up his wound,” added the Chinese doctor, who had taken a needle from the medical bag and started threading it in the dim light. Out of nowhere she produced a small but powerful light and attached it to her forehead with an elastic band. “I can work under any conditions,” she said, “even here.”
At that moment, a short, overweight woman wearing a large, floppy-brimmed hat and diamond rings, stepped into the circle of light.
“I’m a massage therapist,” the woman announced in English. “I agree the doctor from China is the best person to sew up the leg of the American. But I also suggest he should place himself under my supervision for the next few days. I’m an expert in Rolfing and other physical therapies. I guarantee the full recovery of the American. He will re-gain the use of his leg within three days under my care.”
Ricardo, standing behind Sylvie and next to Madeleine, studied the splash of bourbon in his glass for a moment and then, with mouth open, stared at the woman appearing out of nowhere.
“Jesus,” Ricardo said, “Who is she?”
Madeleine started to laugh then caught herself.
“Her dress looks like she slept in it,” Madeleine said.
Sylvie injected the morphine into my arm. My body relaxed; I unclenched my jaw, and I could see again.
A few feet from the bar stood Baaba Maal and Sofi, the apprentice designer. To one side was Raphael, his round eyeglasses glinting in the light cast by the small bulbs hanging from the canvas awning. Directly above me, in a gap between two pieces of the canvas, I could see the first stars of the night in the black sky.
But I focused my gaze on the head of the Chinese doctor, who was bent over my leg intent on sewing up the wound. She was working furiously, but I couldn’t see or feel what she was doing. I could see, though, that my right leg was bent at the knee, with my right foot planted flat on the couch.
The Chinese doctor hovered over my leg, focusing on the stitches she was inserting and periodically straightening the leg. She was confirming the stitches were secure while loosening the muscles in my leg so she could sew up the wound faster. The Chinese man bent over her, almost touching her head with his head, wiping with antiseptic the same areas on which she operated with her tools. They worked in concert, four hands together, seemingly controlled by one consciousness.
To one side of me, I was aware of Hercule, who was talking with his wife, Delphine, about the dinner menu they had seen. Also I heard Madeleine saying to Sylvie that Baaba Maal, Sofi, and her cousin would be performing after dinner. Now I was worried about how I would get down to the restaurant on the bottom deck of the boat for dinner. And afterward how could I get back up to the top deck again to hear the music? I doubted Sylvie would be able to carry me down each level of the boat and then back up again.
Meeting
When the Chinese doctor finished stitching up my leg, she sat up straight and peeled off the light attached to her head. The Chinese man, standing up, took the needle, inserted it into a small pouch, and placed the pouch back inside the black leather bag.
“C’est fini,” the doctor announced. Immediately, Sylvie leaned over me, lifted me into her arms, and carried me toward the same slick, metal stairs on which I had tripped and fallen. She started down the stairs.
“Don’t worry,” Sylvie remarked. “I got you.” She paused. “I won’t stumble or trip, but you have to relax and stay still.” She paused again, looking into my face. “You know, you’re not very heavy.”
We passed the third level of the boat. Sylvie asked if I needed to stop at my cabin. I shook my head. I wanted to go to dinner. Finally, we arrived in the dining room, located on the bottom deck, a large space with polished wood paneling on all of the walls and with large windows open to the side passageways, the white rectangular railings, and the blue-green waters of the river just beyond the railings.
Sylvie placed me in a chair at a round table set with ornate silver eating utensils and large curved glasses, some filled with wine—a Burgundy from Alsace-Lorraine, according to the menu—and others filled with ice water. She took a seat to my right. We sat with our backs to a window which opened onto the wharf and, in the middle ground, a series of two-story colonial buildings.
Following Sylvie and me into the room, Madeleine settled into a chair on my left. Hercule and Delphine, also entering the room at that moment, sat down in another pair of chairs at our table.
I was in bad need of a drink. I picked up the glass of Burgundy before me and drank its contents in two gulps. Then I reached over, picked up a glass of red wine in front of Madeleine, and drained its contents too. It was obvious I was nervous. After the Chinese doctor had stitched me up and after Sylvie had carried me down the stairs to the dining room, I felt I had used up all of my luck in a matter of minutes. My leg was numb. I was afraid to reach down and run my fingers over the row of stitches. But I almost couldn’t control myself. I was upset, and I wanted to understand more clearly what had happened to me.
When the Chinese doctor and her assistant arrived in the dining room, Sylvie summoned an attendant and instructed the young African man to seat the two Chinese at our table. Lomax, who had slipped into another seat at the table unnoticed, poured two glasses of Burgundy for the Chinese doctor and her assistant before re-filling the glasses in front of Madeleine and me.
“No more wine for him,” Madeleine said, giving me a sharp look as I drank a third glass of wine just as quickly as the previous two.
Dining Room, Bou el Mogdad
I felt dizzy.
The short, chubby woman with the big hat and diamond rings entered the room, asked the attendant to bring her a chair, and instructed him to set a place for her between the Chinese doctor and her assistant, directly across the table from me.
Ricardo, who was passing behind me as he approached another, smaller table close by, laughed.
“That woman is pretty aggressive,” he said.
“Don’t talk so loud,” Madeleine said, taking a large swallow of Burgundy. Sylvie, listening, just smiled and extended her wine glass, prompting Madeleine to fill it with red wine from the bottle.
“Let’s make a toast,” Sylvie announced in French, looking at the Chinese woman. Everyone picked up a glass. “To a surgeon who can work in the dark,” Sylvie proclaimed in a raised voice.
After setting my wine glass back down on the table, I heard a noise through the open window behind me and turned to see Macky on the wharf with a zip-up dress case hanging from a baggage rack. Several silk dresses in different colors were visible through the transparent material of the suitcase.
Baaba Maal stood up from his table a few feet from ours and leaned through the open window. Holding a bottle of orange Fanta in one hand, he shouted at Macky, who was standing on the wharf, and then at Sofi, who had just appeared behind Macky. But evidently neither Macky, staring back at Baaba Maal with his mouth open, nor Sofi, shouting a question, understood what the musician wanted.
“What’s he saying to Macky and Sofi?” I asked, looking at Sylvie.
“How should I know?” Sylvie replied. “I don’t speak Pulaar. Ask Raphael.”
Raphael, who was sitting at Baaba Maal’s table, overheard my question to Sylvie.
“Baaba Maal is trying to tell Sofi what dress to wear for the performance after dinner,” Raphael said in English.
Ricardo, then, stood up from his table and leaned through the window.
“Wear the yellow dress,” Ricardo shouted in Wolof, the other principal native language spoken by the peoples of northeastern Senegal.
Sofi ducked behind the fabrics hanging from the rack.
Baaba Maal, laughing at Ricardo, sat back down in his seat, finished the orange soda in his hand, and picked up a piece of bread.
“Sofi understands,” Ricardo explained, leaning over Sylvie’s shoulder. “My language teacher at Gaston Berger University knows Sofi well.”
Now Sofi stood in front of the clothes rack and held up two yellow dresses, one in each hand. Macky, who had come to Sofi’s side, gave a thumbs-up signal in return.
Macky took the two dresses from Sofi with one hand, gestured to the ramp leading to the Bou el Mogdad with his other hand, and jumped onto the ramp. Then, with his free hand, Macky beckoned to Sofi to follow him onto the ramp, and the two of them disappeared out of sight crossing the ramp.
I gazed in the direction of the French colonial buildings about 50 feet behind the place where Macky and Sofi had been standing and noticed the buildings had become a ghostly white in the deepening darkness. The picturesque buildings, rising out of the sand behind the wharf, suggested an ancient motif. I expected a memorable performance from Baaba Maal, Sofi, and her cousin in a few minutes.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Farmhouse Interiors
I might be wrong, but I am starting to think that you can’t be a minimalist if you really like the farmhouse style. To truly achieve this welcoming look, you will want to layer your home with plenty of textures and fill each every room with character, personality and your special touch. This is what really makes the farmhouse style so appealing to many – the fact that you can stamp your own personality and create a home that reflects who you are and how you like to live.
I am honored to be sharing @greybirchdesigns‘ on our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series today and I hope you feel embraced by this beautiful home and this loving family!
Read on!

Grid Board and Batten & Peonies
In my younger daughter’s room we did a fun wood wall behind her bed making squares out of strips of MDF then we painted it Icy Avalanche by Valspar. The rest of her room is painted Silver Fox by Benjamin Moore. We also added Peonies wall decals around her window to bring in that feminine touch and add some pops of pink.
Ceiling Fan: Hunter Ronan 52 in. LED Indoor Fresh White Ceiling Fan.
Draperies: here & here – similar.
Teen Bedroom
Downstairs we have our oldest daughters room and it is paint Silver Fox by Benjamin Moore. The headboard we built as well from reclaimed wood. We then made some brackets out of pipe and attached them to the headboard to hold the cage lights hanging on each side.

Rug: here.
Master Bedroom
In the master we did a shiplap wall behind the bed.
Paint Color
The rest of the walls Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore.
Master Bathroom
In the master bathroom we painted the walls Dover Grey by Olympic. Our cabinets and countertops in the bathroom are the same as in our kitchen.

Current trends are turning outdoor living spaces into extensions of a home’s interior. Outdoor style used to mean lawn chairs and picnic tables, but those days are long gone. In fact, at ICFF 2018 designers and brands showed an increased offering of outdoor furniture in sleek, comfortable and attractive styles.
Asa Pingree
The daybed can be used indoors as well as outside.
In a departure from his usual designs rendered in wood, Asa Pingree launched his new fiberglass collection. Drawing on his roots as a Maine boat builder, Pingree turned to fiberglass and expanded the functionality of the furniture. Working with the material is an involved process and Pingree used vacuum infusion which draws resin through the reinforcement fabrics using a powerful vacuum force. It allowed the designer to expose colored linens used on the surface of his daybed design.
Like other fiberglass pieces, the Monitor Bench is lightweight and durable.
Suitable for indoors as well as outdoors, the Magic Daybed has a minimalist silhouette and a removable cushion with a woven support underneath.  The texture on the surface of the dark green bed frame is very interesting because the linen weave used adds extra dimension. The material can stand up to weather and can be left out in the yard.
Calma
Long and lounge-worthy sofa
Long and lounge-worthy, this sofa is from Spanish furniture maker Calma. Created by industrial designer Andreu Carulla, the alat Collection is made from powder-coated aluminum. The cushions are upholstered in Silvertex vinyl fabric in white or black or Sunbrella Savane Zinc color. The sofa comes in two sizes. Thick and comfortable cushions angle upwards at the ends, providing not only a different look but an extra comfortable lounging style. The company’s designs are inspired by the sun, sea and art of the Empordà region.
Harbour
Pieces from the different collections mix well.
Nothing creates a more luxurious outdoor space than a coordinated seating area that resembles a living room. Harbour manufactures high-end outdoor furniture, like the pieces in this grouping. The Australian maker’s collections are built to withstand a variety of climates. The pieces look like wicker but are actually an all-weather version that requires no special upkeep as regular wicker does. A stainless steel frame makes them extra sturdy and durable. Comfortable mildew-resistant cushions complete the furnishings.
Heller
The Left Twist Cube is both sculpture and furniture.
For a modern kick of color in an outdoor space, nothing beats the Left Twist Cube from Heller. Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the colorful cubes are inspired by a giant sculpture that he created for a Paris event. Originally silver and part of the company’s Frank Gehry Furniture Collection, the brightly hued cubes can be purchased in magenta, yellow, red, blue, green, black and white. Made from a single piece of roto-molded polymer, the cubes are suitable indoors or out, as extra seating, side tables, plant stands — just about anything.
ISI Mar
The light and airy design has a thoroughly modern look.
Versatile and totally modern, this modular sofa from the Lagarto collection is from ISI Mar. The Spanish company has been producing colorful furnishings for indoor and outdoor spaces since 1966. Manufactured entirely in Spain, the pieces are weather-resistant and made from materials like steel and aluminum that are recyclable and easily recycled. The Lagarto is made of powder-coated galvanized steel. With its high back sections, it can easily be rearranged into a circular configuration making it cozier for conversation, especially in cooler or windier weather. Matching stools and armchairs are also part of the collection.
Jetty 14
Large and comfy, the daybed accommodates one or more people.
Jetty 14 works with a variety of brands that provide high-quality outdoor products. Founded by outdoor industry veteran Sean Smith, the company presents brands like Tonik, Egoe and Mamagreen. The Meika daybed comes in a ‘him and her’ set that face left or right and feature a marvelously comfortable rounded shape. Generous cushions in a neutral color are highlighted with texturally embellished pillows that provide extra style as well as comfort. Designed by Vincent Cantaert and Barbara Widiningtias, the stainless steel frame is woven with Leisturetex®.
Kettal
These deck chairs come in different sizes and configurations.
Kettal’s earthy and inviting designs make you want to lie down and lounge. The uber-stylish Spanish company Kettal collaborates with numerous international designers such as Patricia Urquiola, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and Jasper Morrison among others. The pieces are made with eco-friendly paint, almost all of which are now 100% ecological and recyclable, and the wood is sustainability certified. The sunlounger deck chair above is from the Mesh Collection by Urquiola and is perfect for poolside sunbathing or backyard napping. The sofa below is a great example of a versatile style that will instantly upgrade an outdoor living space.
Mixed materials and a stylish design create extra interest outdoors.
KUN
Puffy cushions sit atop a wooden base in a unique design.
KUN, which has been producing stainless and aluminum furniture for over 15 years, has now added wood to their modern and attractive designs. The Thai company’s furniture is ideal for defining an outdoor living space and providing comfortable seating. This set features their quality metal frame with a warm wood top, capped off with ample cushions that draw people in to have a set. The wooden base also forms a ledge that serves as handy space for a glass, a plate or a lamp for nighttime relaxing or entertaining.
Lafuma
The elements of this lounger are easy to care for.
Basic does not have to be boring and the Miami sunbed from Lafuma is a great example. The French company specializes in outdoor equipment and clothing and is known for its zero-gravity lounge chair. This Miami sunbed featuring performance fabric, a rust-resistant frame and two wheels that make it easy to move around. In addition, the bed’s construction uses elastomere clips to link the tubing and fabric, which gives it better back support. It also helps guarantee that the fabric does not lose its shape.
Manutti
Kobo collection from Manutti
Low and sophisticated, the new Kobo collection from Manutti almost looks like it was knitted into shape. The quiet, graceful curves of the back and arms give the sofa and the chair a very chic edge. The Belgian company is known for its outdoor furniture that is very luxurious and has been used in many sophisticated residential and commercial designs. Using neutral tones in outdoor designs allows the landscape to be the star, whether that is the beach, the pool or an urban garden.
Mexa
Todos Santos Outdoor Casual Seat
Casual and often colorful, Mexa’s hand-crafted designs are perfect for outdoor spaces that are easygoing and eclectic. The company makes all its pieces in Guadalajara, México. Marco Betancourt and Sofia Gascon, the architect-designer team that founded the company aim for their pieces to reference mid-century designs and the glamour of Acapulco in the 1950’s. The Todos Santos bench is stylish and versatile yet eminently casual.
Kinder Modern’s pieces show that children can have great design.
In a colorful collaboration with Kinder Modern, Mexa released a number of pieces that are child-friendly and comfortable, offering children as well as adults stylish space to relax. Scaled-down seats as well as designs like this unique bench. The two have previously collaborated on a pair of sold-out chairs as well as a pint-sized version of Mexa’s Ixtapa rocking chair.
Steven Kenn
The frame is powder-coated and zinc-treated steel.
Los Angeles-based design studio Stephen Kenn recently has branched out into outdoor furniture with this Desert home collection, inspired by the landscape of southern California. What may look like a standard webbed lounge chair is actually made of a special clip system that allows for the replacement of individual belts.  Strong but springy, the belts create durable seating that lasts. The collection also includes sofas, armchairs and other pieces.
TiiPii
An optional rain cover is available separately.
Nothing is more appealing than a hanging nest where you can while away a sunny afternoon reading or napping. TiiPii offers indoor and outdoor versions of this comfy hanging bed. The Australian company launched in 2015 and offers large and medium sizes that can be hung from a structure or tree, or from a purchased frame. A smaller “Bambino” style is also available.
Zavotti
Made from lightweight aluminum and weatherproof nautical rope
In a self-described melding of Mexican tradition and Scandinavian design, new brand Zavotti has developed a very attractive line of outdoor furnishings that are fresh and modern. Among its offerings, this hanging seat is a standout. Created from lightweight aluminum and weatherproof nautical rope, the seat is sturdy and comfortable — and very light. Called the Lucia Swing, the name means first rays of sun and there’s no better place to wait for those than in this comfy seat.
The wood frame complements the upholstery colors.
The brand’s Soto dining table has been reimagined into a sleek and stylish coffee table. The design is sturdy and  goes well with the sofa, which has a lounge extension. The bright colors in the upholstery, mixed with bold and varied stripes, create a modern look that is far more interesting than an orderly matched set.
The choices for outdoor furniture are almost as varied as those for indoor spaces. It has become much easier to create an outdoor living space that is comfortable and reflects individual personality. After considering the style and amount of space available for furnishings, the only other limits are personal desires and budget.

How to Create a Tranquil Living Room... for a Small Apartment
I just moved cross country... from the East coast of the United States to the West coast. In doing this, I gave away most of my furniture and accent pieces and stored the ones that I really treasured. This means that the only belongings I have at present fit in the trunk of my car. As a result, when I take out a lease on an apartment in the next few months I'll have to start from scratch in many ways.
It's been an amazing exercise actually. It's made me really think about what feeling I want my next living room to convey. Do I want it to be a heaven of tranquility or do I want it to be super lively? Well, what I discovered is that I want it to be a blending of both. And I want it to have a simple design.
You see the apartment that I want to rent is one of those A-roof white-washed set-ups with a super luxurious kitchen and a magnificent view of a cove (water inlet). The view is amazing and just makes me feel like I'm in a wonderful dream....so I really want to celebrate the view...and in my experience small apartments with great views do best with furniture that suits the space.
So with this in mind, I've used this post as a daydreaming / planning exercise for my own life. I'll let you know in a future post how it all turned out! In the meantime, keep scrolling....because this living room design might be the right one for you as well. Everything is available for purchase. Simply click the images.

Thoughts behind this Tranquil Blue & Green Living Room... for a Small Apartment
The Artwork - I love my 2018 print collection. I especially love this layered white blue and green print with stripes...so much so that I think it will be just perfect in my new small California apartment. I like how it can blend in with white walls but still offers pops of pastel colors and plenty of texture so it makes me feel tranquil.
The Sofa - Next I knew that I needed to get a neutral cute comfortable loveseat. I particularly wanted to make sure that it was on the smaller side so that it didn't dwarf the apartment....because large furniture can make a small space seem even smaller.
The Blue Accent Chair - Blue being my favorite color I knew that the accent chair had to be blue. It also needed to not have arms so that it gave the impression of expansiveness....so when I found this round deliciously blue that swivels I knew that it would be just perfect. The swiveling mean that the persona sitting in it could move it to talk to me while I'm in the kitchen or sitting next to them on the couch without ever having to get up or to stop leaning back into its cushiness.
The Side & Coffee Table - To compliment the wood decking I know that I want simple wooden side tables and a matching coffee table....so when I found these smooth well-crafted tables I knew that they were it! Depending on how I decide to set-up the apartment I might use the coffee table as more of a TV stand, but I'll decide once I've moved in.
The Ottoman - I didn't just want the room to be blue and white as I thought that that would get a little monotonous so I decided to accents of green starting with the ottoman. This small round ottoman might seem a bit bright in the assemble display above but I have a feeling that when it's put together to scale in my new living room it will offer a cheerful pop of color.
The Pillow - For the second green accent I chose a funky green pillow that can be put on the white sofa or moved to the floor for additional casual seating when I have an overflow of guests.
The Lighting - For lighting I wanted a table lamp and floor lamp that were funky and cool but didn't impede the view of the cove....so I chose a clear crystal table lamp and a tall floor lamp made with thin wire and paper shades.
The Rug - I waned the room to be very cheerful and almost have a supportive feeling of happiness and there's something magical about rugs. The patterns and colors on them send a message. And this blue textured rug just made feel so invited in that I knew that it had to be in my next living room. It's also an indoor / outdoor rug which is an added bonus....my super athletic dog can slip past me with his muddy paws and I'll know that I can easily get the dirt out!
Organic Wall Sculptures - Lastly, I wanted to add a little organic touch to the think side walls near the fireplace so I chose these medium round wall sculptures. If I haven't sold them by then I'll also add a few of the small ones and hang them in a kind of swoosh pattern up the tall!

The Talking Picture
written by Erin Colaluca
SCENE ONE
CURTAIN RISING. STAGE LIGHTS on PATTY in her living room. A large oriental rug is center stage with a coffee table on top of it. Scattered on the coffee table are mug coasters, a coffee cup, and a bottle of Windex. A velvet loveseat and matching chair are arranged around the table. A hatstand is placed on stage right. Upstage there is a large polished wood fireplace with a small fire inside. On the mantel there are pictures of Patty and Matt in shiny frames. Placed across the mantle are odd items, ones that do not look like they belong on a mantel, among them a dodo skull, a jar of dominoes, and an old flour tin gathered around an old clock set to four before six. There is a large empty space above the fireplace. Stage right of the fireplace sit several antique dolls on top of a leather pouf. Stage left of the fireplace stands a medium sized live Christmas tree, decorated with cranberry-popcorn chains, candy canes, and an angel and bow on top
Enter PATTY from stage left, wearing her homemade clothes and patchwork apron and a feather duster. PATTY moves around the stage dusting the objects on the mantel, humming to herself. PATTY lovingly arranges the dolls on the pouf from stage right. She picks up a larger doll and takes a closer look at it, setting the feather duster down on the mantel. PATTY tsks at the doll
PATTY: My, my, Delilah dear. Look at your poor skirt! How did I not see that rip?
PATTY holds out the doll’s skirt. There is a tear in the fabric
No worries, dear. I’ll fix it for you.
PATTY takes out a threaded sewing needle as she moves to the loveseat near the coffee table. She takes a sip of coffee and begins to sew up the rip
(To herself) My, my, my. How did that rip so quickly? Only yesterday I told Matt to be careful around my dolls when he was rearranging the furniture for the millionth time. (disappointedly; with a sigh)I should have know. Every time he walks in the room something breaks, whether it’s a clay piece by those ancient people who invented gyros or my ACL.(Beat) I do miss that pot though- There we go, Delilah. Good as new.
PATTY straightens the doll up and cuts the thread. PATTY tucks the needle back into her pocket and sets Delilah back in place
I’ve got to talk to Matt about that when he gets home. This is where I wish that he actually had a cell phone and not a tin-can system.
PATTY chuckles to herself and resumes dusting, humming. The clock rings six. PATTY stops cleaning and looks at the clock
Goodness. He’s running quite late. What in God’s name could he be doing?
PATTY looks around the room nervously
Maybe he got into a accident? (Beat) He could..he could be in the hospital right now! Dying on the operation table!
PATTY throws her feather duster on the coffee table and runs off stage right.
Matt, I’m coming! (Beat) No. (PATTY re-enters stage right) I’m getting ahead of myself. I would have been alerted by now if that was the case. (PATTY reaches for and hugs one of her dolls) Or maybe he was robbed! (PATTY squeezes the doll, and looks down at it) I’m sorry, Nellie. I know your joints are quite fragile. (PATTY replaces the doll and sits down on the loveseat) And we all know that no one would ever want the two dollar bills and bicentennial quarters he carries in his wallet everywhere. And he never uses them! It’s crazy! He’s crazy! (PATTY throws up her hands) Then I must be crazy, or I wouldn’t have married him!(Beat) I love him so much.
There is a sound of a door opening
MATT:(from offstage) Helloo!
PATTY: Matt!
MATT enters from stage right as PATTY crosses stage right. They hug and kiss. MATT takes off his coat and hangs it on the hatstand.
PATTY: How was work?
MATT: Good, how’d yours go? (Jokingly) Any promotions to manager coming up?
PATTY and MATT walk over to and sit next to each other in the loveseat.
PATTY:(Smiling) Soon. (Beat)(She grimaces) Other than that, it was terrible. You know what’s-her-name, Brianna?
MATT: Yeah, the one who works at Jo-Ann’s.
PATTY: Yes.
MATT: Is she also the one who steals your Lorna Doones?
PATTY:(annoyed) Yes. So today I walked into work at 8:45 on the dime and Brianna wasn’t at the register setting up the change for the day like she always does. And I went in and went to my clothing table to arrange fabric and she comes over to me and says that I’m late. And I say that I’m not. And boy, did she look like she took castor oil. She said that my Iwatch must be wrong and I told her straight that I didn’t own a Iwatch. And God forgive me for this, but I told her to stop bothering me and let me do my work and that she can check her UBanana Watch or whatever. Lord save me! And do you know what, Matt?
MATT: What? She gave you back your cookies?
PATTY:(Gives MATT a glare) No. She did steal my muffin though. And she was right, partially. (She points to the clock on the mantel) Our clock broke and was an hour behind.
MATT: Ah. So that’s why no one got the newspaper.
PATTY: I’m sorry, Matt. (PATTY kisses MATT on the cheek and hugs him) It’s been a bad day, that’s all.
MATT smiles, stands up, and walks off stage right
Matt? What are you doing?
MATT:(From offstage) Well, I have something to make you feel better. An early Christmas present. That’s my job, isn’t it?
PATTY rises from the loveseat
PATTY: What is it?
MATT: Got it from my antique shop. She’s an old relic, the exact date we’re not sure about. I think you’ll like her.
MATT reenters from stage right holding a 2’ by 3’ canvas, framed in gold embellishments and masked by a cloth. He hangs the canvas in the empty space above the clock. With a flourish, MATT takes off the cloth to reveal a painting. OPHELIA is sitting in the middle of it, but the audience can see her from the waist up. OPHELIA has long brown hair, tied up in a fancy coiffure. Her dress is white and ruffled, the sleeves accented by red bows. OPHELIA’S hands are folded in her lap and she smiles slightly. She looks like a young Mona Lisa.
PATTY: Goodness me. What’s it called?
MATT:(excitedly) We recieved her from an old Englishman who found her in a old house. The place was abandoned for years, all flooded and rotting, whole bunch of leakage, a real case. And he saw her, took a liking to her and her rarity, and brought her to the States to make a quick buck.
PATTY: Don’t we all.
MATT: He had no clue why the painting was even there to begin with, although he does remember a family living in the house, but they moved out ages ago. He called them, “a whole bunch of nutters”. Anyway, we took her out to a carbon dater in Providence, and they said that she’s a couple centuries old.
PATTY:(surprised) Oh my goodness… is it worth much?
MATT: Naturally. A hundred thousand, at least.
PATTY nearly falls down. She grips the back of the loveseat for support. MATT rushes over to her
MATT: Honey, are you alright?
PATTY:(Out of breath) Yes, yes, I’m fine.
MATT: Well then, I hope you don’t mind if we keep her.
PATTY swoons. MATT drags her out from behind the loveseat and helps her into a sitting position on the floor
Patty, love! Do you need to lie down?
PATTY:(waving her hand and moving herself to the loveseat) I’m fine, I’m fine. It’s just that- (PATTY sits down) why don’t you want to sell it?
MATT sits down with PATTY and looks up at the painting
MATT:(takes a deep breath) I can’t sell her. She’s too beautiful. Too rare to lose.
PATTY opens her mouth as if to say something, but thinks better of herself and closes her mouth. MATT does not notice
What I find odd-that’s not really the correct word-um...unique about it is that she has no name, no backstory, and no creator She’s perfect for me- for us.
PATTY:(snorts) You and your oddities.
MATT:(laughs) You and your dolls. (Beat)
PATTY: Why do you call the painting “her”? Wouldn’t “it” be easier to call her by?
MATT:(Shrugs) I dunno. I think it’s because I feel like she has a life behind all of that paint. (Beat) And since she’s going to be staying here for so long, we should give her a little respect, don’t you think?
PATTY: I see. But I think it’s unnecessary. It’s just another piece in our collection of oddities, right?
MATT:(Laughs) Right. (A beat passes, in which they kiss) Have you thought of what we’re going to do for Christmas this year?
MATT stands up to look at the painting better. PATTY stands up to join him.
PATTY: Well, host a party, like we usually do. Let’s invite my roommate from college, I want to her how her work’s going.
MATT: Susan, right?
PATTY: Yes, Susan. And your parents, Mr. and Mrs. McCorvitch.
MATT:(noticeably bothered by this) Alright then. (Beat) We’ll show off the painting to them, too.
PATTY: You’re oddly passionate about this painting.
MATT: Look, I just like her. I’m sorry if you’re upset
PATTY: Mad? No, think nothing of it. I’m glad that you’re happy. (PATTY turns to face MATT)
MATT:(Turns to face her, puts his hands on her waist) Me too.
STAGE LIGHTS down. End of Scene One
SCENE TWO
STAGE LIGHTS up on the same room, only it is decked out for the holidays. The painting’s frame is adorned with holly and tinsel, and a fire is roaring away in the fireplace. Stockings are hung by the fireplace (with care). The coffee table is covered in hors d'oeuvres and champagne glasses, as well as a bottle of champagne. Around the coffee table are five velvet chairs arranged in a tight semicircle, leaving a space for the painting.
At the sound of a doorbell, PATTY crosses over from stage left to right, sans apron. MATT follows her, wearing a nice long-sleeve polo with a tie. PATTY answers the door, letting MR. and MRS. MCCORVITCH in from stage right. MATT takes their coats and hangs them on the hatstand amidst many hugs and kisses from MRS. MCCORVITCH. MR. and MRS. MCCORVITCH sit next to each other.
The doorbell rings again and SUSAN enters from stage right. SUSAN gives PATTY a bear hug. There are “thank you for coming”s and “Merry Christmas”es all around. Seats are taken, champagne is poured and toasted, food is eaten, and conversation is loud. SUSAN talks animatedly with PATTY. MR. and MRS. MCCORVITCH talk with MATT.
SUSAN:(To PATTY) These canapes are delicious, Patty. (SUSAN pats PATTY’S arm)
PATTY: Thank you, I made them myself. How is your job? Did you find a band to sing in?
SUSAN:(crosses her legs sloppily) Not bad, not bad at all. I did get stuck in a dark alley though.
PATTY:(distressed) Goodness! Did you get hurt?
SUSAN: It’s okay, though. The power went out while the kids were bowling and I had to get to the back room but I slipped on some oil and landed flat on my back and couldn’t get up!
PATTY: What?
SUSAN: I got a job at the bowling alley on Main.
PATTY: I see.
SUSAN:(Beat) How’s working at Jo-Ann’s?
Shift to MR. and MRS. MCCORVITCH and MATT’s conversation
MRS. MCCORVITCH:(acknowledging the painting) What is this beautiful painting?
MATT: She’s a rare relic from an abandoned house in England.
MRS. MCCORVITCH: Impressive. I am very pleased that you are interested in classical art, Matthew! (MATT turns red at this statement)(MRS.MCCORVITCH takes notice) Don’t be embarrassed, son! It’s an old medium that has lost its spark.
MATT: Thank you.(after a pause) Mom.
MRS. MCCORVITCH: It is very beautiful. Do you know the name of the subject?
MATT: Hm?
MRS. MCCORVITCH: The name of that girl.
MATT: No. Nobody does.
MRS. MCCORVITCH:(Sighs) Lost to time, I guess. What a shame. (To MR. MCCORVITCH, who is staring off into space) What a shame!
MR. MCCORVITCH:(Looking at her) Hm? Oh yes, indeed.
SUSAN and PATTY join the conversation
SUSAN: My god, that’s a tragic story. One day it has a name, the next it’s nobody.
MRS. MCCORVITCH:(Eyeing SUSAN ruefully) Only the beauty is what remains. And what a classic beauty she is! (To MATT) You have fine taste, son. Unlike some people around here. (Her eyes move from SUSAN to PATTY’S homemade sweater)
SUSAN:(Jokingly) I know a couple guys down at the alley who would pay to drool over it.
PATTY, SUSAN, MR. MCCORVITCH, and MATT laugh
MRS. MCCORVITCH:(icily) Indeed.
SUSAN: Cheer up, Mrs. McCorvitch.
MATT: Mom, it was just a joke.
MRS. MCCORVITCH: And so it was. (Gazing up at the painting) She is quite pretty nonetheless.
MR. MCCORVITCH has snapped out of a stupor and squeezes his wife’s hand
MR. MCCORVITCH:(Very quietly) Like you.
MRS. MCCORVITCH:(turns from the painting)Did you say something?
MR. MCCORVITCH:(disappointed) Never mind.
PATTY: She probably had a good husband though, to dress like that.
SUSAN:(in agreement) Mmm.
Everyone gazes at the painting. Suddenly, STAGE LIGHTS go down. BLACKOUT. Shouts rise unanimously
PATTY: Goodness me!
SUSAN: What the hell?
MATT: What?
MRS. MCCORVITCH: Mercy!
MR. MCCORVITCH: Jesus!
PATTY:(soothingly) Calm down, everyone, calm down. We must have blown a fuse, that’s all. I know I shouldn't have put the coffee pot, toaster, and microwave on at the same time. I’ll fix it. Stay calm, everybody.
PATTY stumbles off stage left. Three beats pass before the stage lights come back on. But OPHELIA is not in the picture frame. Instead she stands in the space between the chairs center stage. OPHELIA is visibly shocked. Three more beats pass as everyone stares at her. MRS. MCCORVITCH faints dead away; MR. MCCORVITCH catches and steadies her. PATTY reenters from stage left and freezes in place when she sees OPHELIA. OPHELIA draws herself up and looks around. Anger crosses her face
OPHELIA:(Demanding) Who are you?
OPHELIA spins around in all directions, her dress fanning out as she faces all onstage
Why do you think a painting is just an object to stare at? Why? We’re living creatures like you! Why can you not see that?
OPHELIA advances towards MATT and stares him down
Why did you sentence me to a life of a dust-gatherer sitting in your frame? Why?
MATT:(Stunned) I’m sorry…
OPHELIA slaps him; MATT bites his lip
OPHELIA: “Sorry” can’t fix my issues.
OPHELIA turns to SUSAN
Why do you insist on calling me an it? Am I not worthy of that title? I’m a woman, just like you! (Beat) Only a blind man could see otherwise.
OPHELIA pauses, and then slaps SUSAN
SUSAN: Hey!
SUSAN jumps up, landing a hook on OPHELIA’S jaw. OPHELIA claws at SUSAN’S face. MATT gets up and restrains OPHELIA from hitting SUSAN. OPHELIA kicks at MATT
OPHELIA: Let go of me!
MATT: Hey! Stop!
OPHELIA slips from MATT’S hold. OPHELIA stumbles for PATTY, who backs up in fear
OPHELIA: Why did you let him do this to me? I thought you, of all people, would help me. But you’re just like all of them! (OPHELIA points behind her at the rest of the party. She is now crying) I hate you! I hate all!
PATTY:(Stunned) But you’re a painting. I must have had too much to drink…
OPHELIA: I’m real!
OPHELIA runs to the dolls on the pouf
PATTY: No no no no no!
MATT:(To OPHELIA) Don’t touch them!
OPHELIA picks up Delilah and throws her to the ground. It shatters. OPHELIA continues this with each of the dolls until all of them are completely broken. PATTY sobs. MATT runs to her and she buries her face in his shoulder. MR. MCCORVITCH covers his hand with his mouth
OPHELIA: How does it feel? How does it feel to have things taken from you? They’re stupid dolls! Stupid! (Beat) I’m real alright! I’m real! (Beat; OPHELIA looks from face to terrified face in the room)(meekly) I just want to go home.
STAGE LIGHTS down. End of Scene Two
SCENE THREE
STAGE LIGHTS up. The dolls have been cleared away and the pouf is empty. All traces of the party are gone except the decorations on the empty frame and the Christmas tree. The loveseat and chair are back in place. PATTY enters from stage left, with her apron on. She rubs her eyes, and looks from the empty picture frame to the empty spot where her dolls used to be and chokes back a sob. PATTY sits down in the velvet chair. MATT enters stage left.
MATT: Oh, honey…
MATT hugs PATTY from behind
PATTY: Did you find her?
MATT: No.
PATTY: What if she left? She could hurt someone!
MATT: I’m more worried about her getting lost.
PATTY looks at where her dolls used to be
PATTY: She’s just a painting. Paintings aren't human! They’re miles away from it.
MATT:(kneeling down at PATTY’S eye level) You heard what she said.
PATTY: Well, she’s not welcome here!
MATT: Ok ok ok. (MATT hugs PATTY) I’ll go find her and we’ll send her back home like she wants. It’s all going to be okay, see?
PATTY blubbers. MATT exits stage right. Three beats pass. OPHELIA enters slowly from stage left. MATT enters from stage right. They look at each other. MATT crosses over to OPHELIA, hugging PATTY along the way. PATTY does not notice OPHELIA.
(To OPHELIA) I’m sorry.
OPHELIA: I just want to go home.
MATT: It’s not that easy, though.
OPHELIA: Then make it easy.
MATT: I went to the post office...and it’s too expensive to ship you back to Scotland.
OPHELIA stares at her feet
I’m so sorry.
OPHELIA:(stares blankly) I’m stuck here.
MATT:(sympathetic) Would you like some coffee?
OPHELIA shakes her head
Would you like to sit down, then?
Ophelia sits on the loveseat silently. MATT exits off stage left. PATTY stares hatefully at OPHELIA
OPHELIA: I’m sorry.
PATTY refuses to make eye contact. Beat. MATT reenters from stage left with a fold-up chair and a cup of coffee. MATT gives the coffee to PATTY
MATT:(unfolding the chair center stage) Black. Your favorite.
There is a tense silence
(To OPHELIA) What is your name?
OPHELIA: Ophelia.
MATT: Pleased to meet you. I’m Matt, and this is my wife, Patty.
MATT extends a friendly hand. OPHELIA silently takes it. They shake hands. PATTY looks up.
PATTY:(to MATT) You are welcoming her into our home? You saw what she did to my dolls! (She dabs at her face with a handkerchief)
OPHELIA: You’re the one who angered me.
PATTY:(trying to control herself) But it’s natural for people to look at pictures. I didn’t mean to upset you, it’s your fault, you took it the wrong way.(PATTY blows her nose)
MATT:(patting PATTY’S shoulder)(to OPHELIA) No one here has ever seen a painting speak and move before. (Beat) Could you please tell me what you want?
OPHELIA: I told you. I want to go home.
MATT: Yes, but what do you really want? Like the heart’s desire sort of thing.
OPHELIA:(thinking) I want to be left alone.
MATT: I don't know of a world where anyone-human or painting- would want to be left alone.
OPHELIA: Then I want a world where I can do what I want.
MATT: And what would that be?
OPHELIA: To come and go out of my frame when I want.
MATT:(looks at PATTY, then at OPHELIA) You can do that here, you know.
PATTY: No, she can’t.
MATT: Patty, dear, she’s going to be stuck here for a while.
PATTY: She destroyed my dolls! And for all I know, no one will ever come here again, Christmas or not! Susan won’t even return my calls.(To OPHELIA) Did you see what happened when you left? Everyone skedaddled without even a goodbye. Now we look like bad hosts. (She hudders suddenly) If Brianna hears this, I’m as gone as gravy on a Sunday dinner.
MATT:(slightly grumpy) Patty, the shipping fee is too expensive to- (to OPHELIA) what town were you?
OPHELIA: Skye. In a house by the sea. Alone and beautiful.
MATT: Did you know the owner’s names? Maybe I can find them online.
PATTY: I’ll be. My husband’s using the Web.
OPHELIA: They’re not there anymore. (Beat) I think they died.
PATTY looks up
MATT:(Beat) I’m sorry.
OPHELIA: I just want to go back.
PATTY:(Beat) I wish I could go back..go back to when Jessie was alive…
OPHELIA: Jessie?
PATTY: My son. He died when he was four.
PATTY puts on a brave face. MATT reaches over and holds her hand
OPHELIA:(struck) That’s..awful. How?
PATTY: Cystic fibrosis. Terrible, terrible disease. (Beat) Jessie was the light of my life.
MATT:(Beat) I miss him too.
OPHELIA looks at her feet
PATTY: Ophelia...dear(as an afterthought, stumbling over what to say) I’m truly sorry. (Beat) Our lives haven’t been easy-that much is clear-and I feel like I violated your memory of home-your house on Skye. My home is with my complete family.
OPHELIA: I’m sorry about Jessie. (Beat) And your dolls. I’ll try and pay you back any way I can.
PATTY: Well.. I don’t think you need to. Those dolls were falling apart. (Beat)(PATTY looks at MATT) Besides...I feel like I was holding onto them, like they were my..children. (MATT squeezes her hand tighter) I guess that’s why I held on to them.
MATT: I was going to tell you that, Patty. It’s not healthy to hold on to the past.
PATTY: You’re right, you’re right. (Beat) I’m trying to let go of the past. After all, we have-how many years left ahead of us? (attempts a smile)
OPHELIA reaches over and takes PATTY’S other hand
OPHELIA: I think..I think that I need to let go too. (To MATT)  Save your money, please. (Swallows heavily) Perhaps...perhaps I can stay? Don’t sell me, okay? And don’t look at me too much. (Beat) I promise not to break anything else.
PATTY:(thumbing at MATT) You could teach this fellow a lesson.
OPHELIA smiles slightly
Honestly, Ophelia. I-
MATT: We would be honored if you stay. You’re an interesting person. (MATT smiles warmly)
OPHELIA: Thank you. Thank you all so much.
MATT: You’re welcome.
OPHELIA moves over to PATTY. They all embrace.
STAGE LIGHTS down. SPOTLIGHT on the empty picture frame. SPOTLIGHT out. End of play

Transform Your Outdoor Living Space into a Stylish Retreat With Best Designs on AMEPAC Furniture
Home Interior Decorating Ideas published on https://amepac.org/outdoor/transform-your-outdoor-living-space-into-a-stylish-retreat-with-best-designs/
Transform Your Outdoor Living Space into a Stylish Retreat With Best Designs
As soon as the first warm days of summer hit, the itch to spend more time outside takes hold. No matter whether you have a balcony, deck, yard or other outdoor space, designers have new designs to make it more stylish.

Transform Your Outdoor Living Space into a Stylish Retreat With Best Designs
[ad_1]
As soon as the first warm days of summer hit, the itch to spend more time outside takes hold. No matter whether you have a balcony, deck, yard or other outdoor space, designers have new designs to make it more stylish.
