‘The Moth’ - Jem Southam RESEARCH

After discussing my initial ideas with one of my lecturer’s, they suggested that I look at British photographer, Jem Southam’s project ‘The Moth’. After getting myself a copy of this photobook I was blown away.

‘The Moth’ is a body of work consisting of a few decades worth of work. Set in a Cornish Mining town the book delves into a fictional story based off a singular monochrome meditative image of a man standing on a beach looking out into the Ocean. 

This photobook published by MACK Books took me on such a journey, it transcends through desolate landscapes into the houses that are plotted amongst this area. 

The images have a running theme of ‘slow photography’ they seem considered and carefully composed. One image that particularly stuck with me was of a small stream, split into two channels by some infrastructure that had become overgrown. Hovering above the stream was a gentle breath of mist that gradually blends into the clouds. Through this thin veil of mist is the silhouetted remains of the mining industry. To me this image was so calming and reflective, yet the composition is so clever in that the looming industrialisation of the countryside is present. 

Every image in this body of work has been effected by the natural elements, this gives the work a sense of age, and slowness. Nothing is new, clean and shiny. It has all been left to the will of the surrounding nature. For me this makes the work so special, the sense of time and place is so engaging and interesting. 

‘The Moth’ has a rhythm to the work and this is something I want to experiment with and explore within my own work. I am wary that trying to encompass a rhythm may lead me to creating too rigid of a shooting script which is something that I want to avoid. 

This work has given me a lot of inspiration for my own project and how I will conduct my own photographic practice. ‘The Moth’ is a lesson in patience, great things take time.
