A troop of medieval rabbits from The Hours of Jeanne d’Evreux, Queen of France (Jean Pucelle // French // ca. 1324-1328 // The Met)
#rabbits have always been. Like That#most of these look like wild rabbits#but I SUSPECT the one eating the leaf in the second to last excerpt may be a domestic rabbit#based on the coat color#(unless that’s just the shading)#also I really love the fact that rabbits were used as sort of end punctuation all the time#rabbits#medieval#middle ages#manuscript#monkposting

frequently what happens is I'll be drawing a comic and think, huh. I wonder what shoes a 14th/15th century cardinal would wear. I bet they had fancy rules about it, and the answer will be in a 500 page book about the early modern cardinal. I'll think, 'WELLLLLL since I'm already here, I'll check out this other chapter that sounds interesting,' and then I'll find out that the vatican is literally hazardous to your health, but from that point on I'll be locked in for the entire book. I'll start reading through all the citations while checking to see what else some of the contributors have written. the comic has been forgotten entirely because I need to know more about the hats.
#my folder on the knights templar and other military-monastic orders is MASSIVE because i keep spiralling into other areas of#research. same with the cardinals. i will Keep Going until i hit an insurmountable wall#i have like. several books about syphilis in the medieval/renaissance era because i disagreed with something someone said#and then had to follow that up with reading about malaria throughout history#i may have to actually learn latin for this one and. well! if i must. then i will#i wont be happy about it but i'll do it (<<< someone who absolutely does not have to do this in the slightest)

Thinking about Elizabeth Woodville as a gothic heroine is making me go insane. She entered the story by overturning existing social structures, provoking both ire and fascination. She married into a dynasty doomed to eat itself alive. She was repeatedly associated with the supernatural, both in terms of love and death. Her life was shaped entirely by uncanny repetitions - two marriages, two widowhoods, two depositions, two flights to sanctuary, two ultimate reclamations, all paralleling and ricocheting off each other. Her plight after 1483 exposed the true rot at the heart of the monarchy - the trappings of royalty pulled away to reveal nothing, a never-ending cycle of betrayal and war, the price of power being the (literal) blood of children. She lived past the end of her family name, she lived past the end of her myth. She ended her life in a deeply anomalous position, half-in and half-out of royal society. She was both a haunting tragedy and the ultimate survivor who was finally free.
#elizabeth woodville#nobody was doing it like her#I wanted to add more things (eg: propaganda casting her as a transgressive figure and a threat to established orders; the way we'll never#truly Know her as she's been constantly rewritten across history) but ofc neither are unique to her or any other historical woman#my post#wars of the roses#don't reblog these tags but - the thing about Elizabeth is that she kept winning and losing at the same time#She rose higher and fell harder (in 1483-85) than anyone else in the late 15th century#From 1461 she was never ever at lasting peace - her widowhood and the crisis of 1469-71 and the actual terrible nightmare of 1483-85 and#Simnel's rebellion against her family and the fact that her birth family kept dying with her#and then she herself died right around the time yet another Pretender was stirring and threatening her children. That's...A Lot.#Imho Elizabeth was THE adaptor of the Wars of the Roses - she repeatedly found herself in highly anomalous and#unprecedented situations and just had to survive and adjust every single time#But that's just...never talked about when it comes to her#There are so many aspects of her life that are potentially fascinating yet completely unexplored in scholarship or media:#Her official appointment in royal councils; her position as the first Englishwoman post the Norman Conquest to be crowned queen#and what that actually MEANT for her; an actual examination of the propaganda against her; how she both foreshadowed and set a precedent#for Henry VIII's english queens; etc#There hasn't even been a proper reassessment of her role in 1483-85 TILL DATE despite it being one of the most wildly contested#periods in medieval England#lol I guess that's what drew me to Elizabeth in the first place - there's a fundamental lack of interest or acknowledgement in what was#actually happening with her and how it may have affected her. There's SO MUCH we can talk about but historians have repeatedly#stuck to the basics - and even then not well#I guess I have more things to write about on this blog then ((assuming I ever ever find the energy)#also to be clear while the Yorkists did 'eat themselves alive' they also Won - the crisis of 1483-85 was an internal conflict within#the dynasty that was not related to the events that ended in 1471 (which resulted in Edward IV's victory)#Henry Tudor was a figurehead for Edwardian Yorkists who specifically raised him as a claimant and were the ones who supported him#specifically as the husband of Elizabeth of York (swearing him as king only after he publicly swore to marry her)#Richard's defeat at Bosworth had *nothing* to do with 'York VS Lancaster' - it was the victory of one Yorkist faction against another#But yes the traditional line of succession was broken by Richard's betrayal and the male dynastic line was ultimately extinguished.

the vampire arun
#so armand's age puts him at being born just before the delhi sultanate fell#however . if i'm already taking liberties with his timeline i can very well imagine him being around in classical/medieval times too#so take my au where arun is one of the ancients and remains in india for thousands of years forever serving gnc slay#clothing details following (my research was quick and just for fun i may have gotten something wrong):#the first armand is wearing an uttariya scarf over one shoulder and antariya (dhoti)#which was from ancient india but i believe was still worn into the medieval period even as stitched garments became popular#the 2nd armand is meant to be from the mughal empire his gown is called jama and he's dressed very regally#the 3rd is in a modern kurta the jewelry is just for fun#arcadiiian art#amc iwtv#the vampire armand#armand iwtv#iwtv art#historical fashion

Stupid but brave - Part Three
written for @steddiemicrofic Prompt: top WC: 510 rated: M TW: injuries, mention of child kidnapping
(Ok, this story might be getting a little bit longer than expected, but I love the idea of playing with the prompts and writing one long story. So here is the third part of my Microfic Medieval AU)
Part one: I’ll make you proud Part two: Battle cry
Pain. Blinding and excruciating pain, that's the only conscious thought in Steve's mind.
He tries to take a deep breath, but even breathing seems far too much for him. His memories are shattered and confused. He tries to turn when he hears the sounds of steps getting closer, but he's too deep in his agony to speak any word.
"Shh… Be quiet," a gentle voice tries to soothe him, "be quiet or he'll get back."
Steve has no words to ask any question, he can just whimper pitifully. The feeling of a soft touch on his cheek and something pushed against his lips surprise him. He opens his mouth and the fresh water tastes amazing.
"Slow down…" The voice says, giggling a little.
When the cup of water is empty, Steve squints, trying to protect his eyes. Even the dim light of the candles in the corner of the room seems unbearable. It takes him a couple of tries but finally, he manages to open his eyes and look around: he is lying on the ground of a prison and a red-haired girl is smiling at him.
"You are awake!" she exclaims, "I was starting to think you would have never woken up."
"Wh…”
"Where are you? Who am I?" she asks, brushing away some hair from Steve's face, "I'm Max, and you are being held captive in Vecna's castle."
At those words, Steve startles and tries to get up, but the pain is too much and he falls back with a whimper.
"Don't move. You were badly injured during the battle," she tells him, helping him get more comfortable.
"My people?" Steve mutters, gritting his teeth.
"They fought bravely, and you were braver than everyone else. Stupid but brave.” she chuckles, “You tried to fight a dragon on your own."
Steve nods, he remembers the scales and the ember eyes, "Didn't know Vecna had a dragon." Steve tries to say, coughing some blood that the girl cleans with a dirty piece of tissue.
"No one did." She sighs, lowering her eyes.
"Why are you here?" Steve manages to ask, while he tries to sit with his back on the wall.
"My mother is a powerful mage," she replies, playing with the red braid on the side of her head, "Vecna kidnapped me to blackmail her," she explains.
Steve isn't surprised, Vecna has no qualms, killing innocent people and kidnapping kids sounds like him.
"Don't worry, we'll find a way to escape." He tries to comfort her, and his stare moves toward the big window on the wall: it's too high for him but maybe he could help Max escape, holding her on his shoulder and pushing her out.
"Don't even think about it." The girl says, catching Steve’s stare, "We are on the top of the highest tower of the castle: that window is a promise of certain death, not an escape.”
Steve flops against the wall, searching under his tunic for his medallion with Eddie’s picture.
“Where is my medallion?” he panics.
“He took it. Like everything else.”

miserable coward lies down; cries about it; repeats.
#the cupola report#I think. I think I may need to drop my local indigenous histories course due to the. well. Yeah.#<- they are a coward <- saying this about myself does not help the sitation <- are we making excuses for self again midwretchedness#anyway. the reason I primarily study ancient and medieval europe academically is because it feels less like open heart surgery.#if I fuck that one up (and I know myself enough to know I will) there's not this hovering horror that what I do will actually cause harm.

The AngevinYaoiz ZINE interest check!
Hello all! I am planning on selling a small run of zines/artbooks compiling some of my favorites of my Medieval/12th century/Plantagenet drama themed artwork, cartoons, etc from the past couple of years! I’ve really enjoyed everything I’ve made here, and would love to continue sharing it.
I’m working on to making a zine to share at the San Francisco Zinefest on September 1, where I will be selling it alongside my other comics and artwork. (under my main “Tomatobird Art.”) If you happen to be in the area, please feel free to say hi!
The details are TBD, but will probably be a letter sized (8.5” x 11”) booklet. I am also thinking of making a more expanded digital zine as well to include more artwork, older sketches, and maybe some writing, as well.
If you are interested in receiving updates on availability please fill out this Google Form! Thanks a lot,
-Allie Pascal
