Greetings everybody! Thanks so much for visiting. In addition to summer heat, Hurricane Ernesto has been the big weather story this past week. We’re reaching the peak season for hurricane potential. While preparedness supplies are plentiful, now is the time to get prepared for a tropical storm or hurricane. I’ve plenty of hurricane preparedness information for you. I’ll also continue our overview…

Important seasonal reminder, if you're on meds for chronic or mental illnesses, they can cause you problems with the heat! Thanks to spoonfulofhan on Twitter for these! She also has tips for dealing with the heat:

Very helpful thread made for those walking the picket lines by an EMT in Florida:
(screen shots from here on out. Too many images to put in one post. Sorry for the dark mode switch ahead of time)
[Image ID: a tweet thread made by @TheMaryGirls on July 18th, 2023 that reads in its entirety (though combined where appropriate and tweet numbers removed for condensing):
This is for the strikers everywhere since I'm nowhere near a picket line. This is the least I can do:
I am an EMT in Florida, one of the hottest states in the country on a regular basis. These are things you can do to protect yourself from the heat
1. Water
Water is great, your body needs it to live. You can go longer without food than you can without water. It's vital. If you become too dehydrated you can lapse into something called Hypovolemic shock which is the most dangerous form of shock because, usually, by the time you realize something is wrong, you're already in a bad position.
When you sweat, you're not just losing water. You're also losing salt, potassium, chloride, magnesium, & calcium. To combat this, you should drink something with electrolytes.
You can also eat a banana in order to avoid cramping that can occur with the loss of potassium. You don't want to be the one doing the Charley Horse Hustle on the line when people have phone cameras. You can also eat fruit and veg with high water content. They helps.
A word of caution about ice water. I know the idea of a big bottle of ice water sounds great when you're sweating your balls off on the line but NO! That can be dangerous. Your body temperature is up due to the heat. You chug a bottle of ice water like you used to do with Smirnoff Ice in college, you'll regret it. Ice water will cause your body temperature to drop which fraks up your homeostasis. You can experience stomach craps, fainting, and, on some weird occasions, cardiac arrest. Face planting on the pavement isn't cute.
One way you CAN use ice water safely is by soaking a t-shirt or towel and putting it on your head to help cool you off. Also, cold rags around the wrists can also cool you down. You've seen construction workers with the t-shirts on their heads? This is why.
2. Whole body
If you get blisters on your feet, you need to treat them. Also, don't force pop them, you're just asking for trouble. When they rupture, they need to be cleaned with soap and water (no alcohol or peroxide) and protected. Band-Aids won't really help here.
Band-Aids can easily slip off and give bacteria a chance to move in and really get gross. Liquid bandage is the better option. It's waterproof but it does sting when you put it on so be warned.
If you experience muscle cramps on the line, you need to deal with them. This is your bodies way of telling you something is wrong. Sit down, drink something. Stretching before picketing can also help prevent them. Let's be honest, as writers, we sit. A LOT.
Going from a cave dwelling hermit to bright sunlight and exercise is going to piss your entire system off. Icy Hot and hot baths will be your friend.
3. Dehydration warning signs.
Muscle cramps
light headed
headaches
feeling very thirsty
dark urine
urinating less often
feeling tired
dry mouth, lips, or tongue
skin tenting
confusion
That's all that I can think of at the moment.
GO FUCK EM UP!!!!!!!
/End ID]
Bonus:
[Image ID: Tweeted comment on the thread from @/sardoniccomment that reads:
Every word of this is good advice, but, as a former desert-dweller, there’s something I need to add: dehydration makes you stupid. It can literally prevent you from being able to figure out the source of your problems is dehydration.

excessive heat and antipsychotics
Where I live, temperatures during the summer can reach “triple digits,” or over 100 °F (37 °C). We had our first triple digit weather of the year just last week, and it’s only going to get hotter as we progress further into summer.
Something I learned only a few years ago is that some medications, including antipsychotics, can affect your body’s ability to regulate heat. Meaning that those who take these meds are more at risk of life-threatening, heat-related illnesses such as hyperthermia or heat stroke.
If you’re on psych meds and live in an area known for extreme heat or humidity, please do your very best to stay as cool as possible. Keep plenty of water with you, try to stay in cool and shaded areas, wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing, and familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses. (These are things everyone should do but I wanted to emphasize it for psychiatric medication users specifically because of our impaired ability to regulate our body temperature. But I want everyone to stay safe in hot weather.)
Here are some links to some helpful information I found, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control And Prevention*
Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses
Symptoms of Heat-Related Illnesses
Heat and Medications (intended for clinicians but has useful info for patients as well)
Risk Factors of Heat Stress (PDF/infographic intended for workers)
*Note that because this is a U.S. based organization that they will use Fahrenheit for temperature. I recommend using google search to convert units of measurement.

And that’s a wrap for Comic Con 2024! Ha, it was a lot of fun, but I really enjoyed dressing up as Mondo today! I even had a couple people recognize him! And a few others just liked the hair, one of whom asked how long it took me to get my hair like that, which tells me that at least it looks natural enough for people to mistake it as my actual hair, ha.
Overall, Comic Con was cool! On Thursday, I attended a live podcast recording for Braving the Elements, which is an Avatar the Last Airbender podcast hosted by Janet Varney and Dante Bosco (the voices of Korra and Zuko, respectively), and I actually got a trivia question right and I should (hopefully…) get an email from them soon to get a prize for answering the question right. If not… oh well. At least I’ll be featured briefly on the podcast answering trivia correctly, even though I usually suck at trivia, ha.
The rest of the days were a bit more meh, but I still had fun. I won a Pokeball ornament from a Hallmark panel, since I knew how many Squirtles were in the Squirtle Squad, aha. Which leaves my trivia score 2 for 2 at the moment.😅 I also got a free shirt and scarf for the upcoming Yakuza live action show, which was neat. I’ve never played Yakuza, but my brother has, so I was able to give him the shirt at least.
Still, while Comic Con was fun, I’m definitely glad it’s over so I can go home and clean up from my frantic cosplay creating the last several weeks, oof.
Also! On the first day I dressed at Taka, but since I was by myself I only have the one photo my dad was able to quickly take of me before he had to drive off and a quick selfie I took in the car.
#danganronpa#mondo owada#kiyotaka ishimaru#GPOY#ishimondo#personal post#My angry face could do some work ha#I can do a mean death glare. But angry face? Not as much sadly#Oh well.#Oh! And I’m kinda proud of myself with the Taka costume#Not for anything I did on the costume but because I was able to lose enough weight to fit into the cosplay jacket I bought years ago!#It was too small when I bought it and while I got it refunded I didn’t actually return it#Since the company was trying to make me spend $40 to send it back?#And I was like… that pretty much takes up the majority of the cost of the outfit what.#So I never sent it back and still got the money for it#I always thought that MAYBE I would one day lose enough weight to fit it#But I didn’t have much hope of it#But! I have found a good medication that helps with my appetite and I am trying to exercise more#And now the jacket fits!#The pants of the cosplay still don’t but that’s fine#I have white pants ha#Oh also yes my hair did deflate as the day went on ha#I’ll fix it before the next con I decide to wear this costume to#Luckily I didn’t overheat that badly while wearing it#There was one moment where I got very dizzy but that happens every so often with me these days#The heat didn’t help but it didn’t fully cause it either

day 86
do any of yall ever have like. an Evil infodump? where instead of endlessly word vomiting about a thing you love and are very informed about, there is a thing you are equally well-informed about but hate with a passion that you cannot hold back in conversation?
i do :')
(I'll put it under the cut for the curious because I think it's important and i cannot be stopped but also i'm not kidding the facts are infuriating)
SO. "Homeopathic" is often interpreted as sort of a vague synonym for "natural," or "organic," but it's actually related to a system of alternative medicine that means something Very Specific.
There are two main principles behind the practice of Homeopathy.
"Like cures like." This is the idea that, for example, if you have a headache, taking a veeeery small amount of a substance that is known to CAUSE headaches will cure that symptom. I understand where people fall into this flawed idea, as it sounds very similar to the principles behind, say, vaccines, or antivenom. But it isn't universally applicable in this way. An herb isn't a virus. But even if it was, a Homeopathic preparation of that herb would not have any effect on the body because of the second principle.
"Water has memory." This is the idea that water is able to "remember" any substance that it has had contact with. This is also not true. Molecules don't really have any way to store information like that, and even if they did, well... What would that information do inside our bodies? Would our cells have any way to interpret and process that information? What would they do with it? It's all rather nebulous and it seems like more of a spiritual claim than a scientific one. Which is fine, but is not medicine.
So, with these principles in mind, the process of creating a "Homeopathic Preparation of [insert substance here]" goes a little something like this: You take a dropper and put one drop of your active substance in a container with a hundred drops of water. You then take a drop of that mixture, and put it in another container with another hundred drops of water. You continue this dilution process until there is, quite literally, a near-zero percent chance that your mixture contains even a single molecule of your original active substance (depending on the level of dilution believed to be best for the substance in question. Typically, a higher dilution is considered more potent.) So it is, by this point, literally just a vial of water.
This vial of water is what is then sold as a "Homeopathic preparation of [substance]." OR that water is used to compound a batch of sugar pills, or gel capsules, or tablets, whatever format is being offered. Regardless, the composition of the tincture is literally just water and ~*vibes*~.
And they sell these vials of expensive vibe water! At!!!
THE PHARMACY!!! WITH LIKE THE IBUPROFEN AND ALL THE OTHER REAL MEDICINES!!! AND NO BIG WARNING LABELS THAT SAY, "THIS CONTAINS NO ACTIVE INGREDIENTS AND IS BASED ON VIBES ALONE," OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT!!
In fact! In the US they are able to advertise that they have been FDA approved! (FDA approval of dietary supplements is not the same as FDA approval of actual medications. In the context of supplements, approval just means they've proved it won't just kill you straight up, and thus you're allowed to sell it.) And, well. It certainly won't kill you! In fact they often also advertise things like, "It's natural!" and "No harmful side effects!" and "No risk of overdose!" and it's all technically true! BECAUSE IT'S JUST WATER! LIKE I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW IT'S LITERALLY JUST WATER!!!
Anyway. Please keep this in mind the next time you are offered a homeopathic remedy, or see one advertised in the store, or hear your antivaxxer auntie bragging about the fact that her kids all got a "homeopathic" alternative to their MMR shots.
IT'S! JUST! VIBE WATER!!!!
#day 86#year 5#it me#truly very few things get me more heated than this specific concept. i dont know what it is... just.... WOOF.#anyway i didnt bother checking beforehand if there's a homeopathy side of tumblr but i must assume there is. so.#if this showed up in your search results and you would like to argue with me about this. im sorry but you are not my intended audience.#i didnt mean to show up to your party and simply shit on everything.#but also if you spread medical misinformation on my post or get rowdy in my inbox im gonna block ya.

why are functional disorders not seen as real? why is the functional part what makes people think it's not real? i'm autistic and struggling to grasp why the word functional means not real to a lot of people. like. it's a functional disorder. it affects functioning. why is that not a big deal? why does that make it not real like other disorders that aren't labeled functional disorders?
also why does it not count as a real disability if it's functional?
#functional neurological disorder#chronic illness#fnd#i'm genuinely confused people are so negative about the functional label#why. why is that bad in the medical field#i'm genuinely autistically so confused about this i don't get why that makes it a less serious diagnosis#or why people hate the word functional. what makes it such a heated topic / word?#struggling to articulate exactly what my problem is#i was so happy to be diagnosed with it bc it explains my symptoms#why is it not a good diagnosis? why is functional something that makes people think it's not that bad?

I've had this thought buzzing in my head for a while now so, here goes nothing:
A branch of older medics that have decided to create a separate wing of the hospital to take care of other bots in heat. Here, bots who don't have partners, that feel weak and dizzy because of their coding going haywhire with horniness or that don't want to get knocked up go to these older, sexually experienced bots, to get taken care of and find some relief from their heats. Furthermore, since most of the mechs working there are so old, their transfluid is extremely thin, so they can creampie needy bots as much as they want with minimal risk of pregnancy (it's still possible, just very difficult).
Some couples go to these older mechs too to learn how to please their partners while they are at their most vulnerable with both by getting guidance from these old bots, while also ending up discovering some kinks they never thought they had. Be it hige mommy kinks, an immense desire for being breastfed, being pinned down and fucked by a bigger/smaller bot or being a subby bottom
OohO yes that's what I'm talking about. A heat relief hospital wing meant to help out those in need better be led and managed by older, experienced bots...
So many young mechs come in with their first heat or their first heat alone, and they're so nervous and afraid and everyone is so professional... But all they need is a firm hand that can hold them down, and touch their arrays in just the right ways.
mhmmm The kinks discovered in that wing... bots clinging to their attending doctor, calling out for mommy, for daddy, begging to be taken care of... Little bots who find out they get off faster and harder when there's a big bot above or below them. Big, scary bots who find out they like to be shoved into the bed and be a pretty pillow princess <3
I imagine this hospital wing is a very popular outlet for cycling bots... I do wonder who would work at it, though.
