Federal Justice Minister Arif Virani said Thursday he has reservations about a suite of measures Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is about to introduce to curb access to certain transgender health services for kids and ban gender-diverse people from some sporting events. Speaking to reporters on Parliament Hill, Virani said Smith's promised measures amount to "targeting and demonizing" trans children.
Asked if he plans to pursue a legal challenge, Virani pointed out that the province hasn't enacted the measures yet. Health Minister Mark Holland said he's "deeply disturbed" by the province's plan, which he said will put children at risk.
A spokesperson for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre told CBC News the party has no comment on what Smith is doing in Alberta. A majority of Conservative Party delegates at a recent policy convention endorsed adding similar measures to their policy book.
Most of the federal Tories (69 percent) at the Quebec City meeting agreed that young people should be barred from gender-affirming care.
Delegates also supported a policy that calls for single-sex spaces that are open only to women, along with other trans-related initiatives that have been called discriminatory by some.
The Liberals' reaction comes a day after Smith took to social media to announce her plan to "preserve for our children the right to grow and develop into mature adults" and block them from making "permanent and irreversible decisions regarding one's biological sex."
The proposed policies include banning so-called "top" and "bottom" surgeries for minors aged 17 and under and restricting puberty blockers and hormone therapy for children 15 and under. The sorts of surgeries Smith is promising to ban are rarely available to children in Canada.
According to the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH)'s standards of care — which are followed by clinics like Montreal's GrS, where many such surgeries are performed — a person must reach the age of majority (18 in most provinces) before being allowed to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Some exceptions are made for top surgery (mastectomy) for kids 16 and over. Puberty blockers are hormone-suppressing agents that pause the progression of puberty for as long as people are on them. They are sometimes prescribed for younger children after consulting with a doctor. They may be combined with hormone therapies, some of which could have long-term, irreversible effects.
Smith said teachers will need to get third-party instruction material on gender identity, sexual orientation, and human sexuality approved by the province before using them in the classroom, and parents will have to opt students into every classroom discussion of sex education, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Parents are allowed to opt out of such classroom discussions now. Minors aged 15 and under will also need parental consent to change the names and pronouns they use at school.
Kids aged 16 and 17 will need to notify their parents of such a change, but they don't need their consent to use the names or pronouns they choose. The new policy also bans transgender women from competing in women's sports leagues. Smith suggested these trans athletes could instead be accommodated in "coed" or "gender neutral" sports divisions.
While the new policies would restrict what transgender children can do, Smith said she cares "deeply" about gender diversity and supports the right of adults to pursue transgender care.
She also vowed to recruit at least one medical professional who specializes in transgender surgery to practice in Alberta so people don't have to travel to other jurisdictions like Quebec. Holland said Smith's moves are "dangerous" and accused her of "playing politics with children's lives."
Women and Gender Equality Minister Marci Ien called the Alberta measures "reprehensible." She said she was disturbed by Smith's video, in which she featured the premier speaking in soft tones over "spa-like" background music as she announced a plan to restrict rights.
Ien sought to tie the measures to Smith's recent meeting with conservative TV personality Tucker Carlson, who visited Alberta last week and made a homophobic joke about the prime minister.
Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault, a gay man who represents Edmonton in the House of Commons, said he spent the night on the phone consoling trans kids who are worried about what these changes could mean for them. He said there's a pervasive fear among some trans kids that their classmates will "out" them to teachers and parents before they're comfortable with revealing their sexual identity.
Boissonault also raised the possibility of clawing back federal health transfers to Alberta to send a message that the changes won't fly.
While Smith's plan was condemned by Liberals in Ottawa, it earned the praise of the Campaign Life Coalition, a social conservative group that has derided same-sex marriage and has campaigned to limit abortion access.
Egale Canada and the Stepping Stone Foundation, two LGBTQ groups, issued a joint statement vowing legal action if the policies are enacted.
They accused Smith of playing politics with "some of the most vulnerable members of our society: trans and gender diverse youth."
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), which is challenging New Brunswick's trans-related measures in the courts, called the policies "a clear and blatant attack on freedom" and promised to fight them.

How often do people go to a massage spa in Montreal?
For addressing a medical issue, injury, or stressed situation, people like to go for a massage. However, the number of massages taken by people is not fixed in Montreal. It mainly depends upon your condition.
Primarily a massage therapist recommends a specific massage for a specified time after a certain interval according to your needs.
Swedish massage or deep tissue massage is most popular, and people grab these packages more frequently. The main reason behind its fame is that these massages are specially designed for injured persons and athletes. On the other hand, relaxation massage happens less often.

Uranium in the History of Medicine
Authored by Fathi Habashi
The history of uranium is closely connected with the silver mining town Joachimsthal1 in the Erzgebirge on the border between Saxony and Bohemia (Figure 1). The town was founded in 1516 when few years earlier silver was discovered. Further settlings in the neighborhood, Freiberg (1168) and Schneeberg (1446) are also known by their silver discoveries. It was there in Joachimsthal that uranium was discovered but uranium industry went through many stages of prosperity and depression with different industrial products other than uranium till finally uranium became the most sought-after metal during World War II that started in Europe in 1939 [1].
Within few years of mining in the district, it became known that the miners in the town suffered from a mysterious sickness. It was also too often that the miners came across a heavy black mineral which was for them a bad luck because it did not contain silver (Figure 2). For this reason they called it “Pechblende” which is German for “the bad luck mineral”. Because it was black, it became known in English as “pitchblend”. Soon, the miners’ sickness was attributed to this black mineral.
The town recognized remarkable prosperity, the population increased gradually, becoming the second largest town in Bohemia after Prague. However, during the religious war of 1546-1547 and the lack of pumps needed to remove water from the deep mines made it difficult to compete with silver from the new Spanish American colonies, which was arriving in increasing quantities on the European market. As a result, the town knew its depression and the population decreased drastically. With decreased silver production, Joachimsthal was about to become a ghost town when Martin Klaproth (1743-1817) (Figure 3) a pharmacist in Berlin who became later professor of chemistry at the Royal Mining Academy in Berlin, discovered that the black mineral from Joachimsthal can be used to give glass a brilliant yellow color with green fluorescence when added to the molten batch.
Klaproth was also convinced that this mineral must have contained a new metal. This discovery coincided with the discovery in 1781 of new planet in the solar system by his compatriot William Herschel and called the planet Uranus [2]. Hence Klaproth named the new metal “uranium” to honor his compatriot. In 1789 he was able to isolate a black heavy solid from the ore which he thought it to be the new metal.
Uranium in the Glass Industry
In 1851 the Austrian chemist, Adolf Patera (1819-1894) (Figure 4) at the Imperial Geological Institution in Vienna investigated the possibility of the commercial application of Klaproth’s discovery. He devised a procedure for preparing “uranium yellow” known at that time as “Uranoxyd-natron”. Consequently, a plant was built in 1854 next to the silver smelting operations to process this black uranium mineral for pigment manufacture which was kept a guarded secret and a monopoly of Bohemian glass manufacturers. In 1873, Joachimsthal suffered greatly from a fire and since the silver operation was becoming unprofitable the government of the then Austrian Empire decided to close all the mines.
The Discovery of Radioactivity of Uranium
Joachimsthal was about to become again a ghost town when new discoveries came to its rescue. One year after the discovery of X-rays by Roentgen in 1895, came the discovery of radioactivity by Becquerel (Figure 5) in 1896 when he was trying to find a relation between phosphorescence of uranium salts and the possibility of emission of X-rays. Indeed, he found that uranyl potassium sulfate crystals did fog photographic plates although they were wrapped in black paper. This was followed by the search of Marie and Pierre Curie (Figure 6) for the supposedly new element causing the intense radioactivity of the mineral as compared with pure uranium salts. The Austrian government permitted that 100kg of the waste material from the Joachimsthal uranium-based pigment factory to be dispatched to Paris for the Curies. Marie Curie succeeded in the isolation of polonium in 1898 followed by radium in December of the same year. Between 1898 and 1902 the Curies then purchased 11 tonnes of the residue from the Austrian government to process them to produce radium and for further research [3].
As soon as the Curies announced that radium salts emit light in the dark (Figure 6), two distinguished physicists at McGill University in Montreal, Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) and Frederick Soddy (1877-1956) immediately took up investigation of this new element. Within few years the area was thoroughly explored and important conclusions regarding the origin of radium and polonium, the radioactive decay process, the structure of the atom, isotopes, etc., were formulated. The discovery in 1903 that radium emitted gamma rays was put into practice for treatment of cancer by the so-called “Curie Therapy”, hence the production of radium became in great demand. A small plant was erected east of Paris to treat the Joachimsthal residue shipped from Bohemia, for radium recovery.
When the Curies together with Becquerel were awarded the Nobel prize in 1903, the attention was drawn to Joachimsthal. In the same year, the Austrian Government declared an embargo on the export of ore and residue and asked Carl Auer von Welsbach (1858-1929) (Figure 7) who was specialized in the recovery of rare earths to devise a method for radium recovery. As a result of the embargo, exploration for radium was launched worldwide. Ores were discovered, plants were erected, and small amounts of radium were produced at a very high cost-$100,000/gram since radium content is only 0.33mg in one tonne of ore containing 0.1% uranium [i.e., 1kg uranium].
The Radium Era
When late in 1903 the Austrian government declared an embargo on the export of uranium ore and residue from Joachimsthal the stage was set for the exploitation of new sources of radium and for the development of the radium-extraction industry in other countries. In 1905, the Austrian physicist Stefan Meyer (1872-1949) (Figure 8) proved that the Joachimsthal mine waters indicated high content of radium. In 1906, the first radium spa in the world was opened there which attracted many wealthy tourists. A year later, a radium separation unit was installed in the same building that was used for preparing uranium yellow pigment. It became the leading radium producer in the world. In September 1910 the International Radiology Congress was held in Brussels in which leading scientists in the field of radioactivity considered for the first time the question of preparing standard samples for comparison of measurements carried out at different laboratories (Figure 9).
During World War II several hundred grams of radium salts were used in luminescent compounds. They were mixed in small quantities with zinc sulfide, to produce a self-luminous paint for dials of watches, instruments, and for signs. Intensive research all over the world was underway at numerous establishments and universities for the recovery of radium and Radium Research Institutes were founded in many countries [4]. Important pitchblende deposits were discovered in what became known as Shinkolobwe in the Haut Katanga district of the Belgian Congo between 1913 and 1915, but wartime pressure of maximum production of copper prevented their exploitation. In 1921 the Union Minière du Haut Katanga began shipping the high-grade ore (averaging about 50% uranium oxide) to Olen in Belgium for the extraction of radium. As soon as production began in mid-1922 an immediate and final shutdown of almost all radium-extraction operations in USA took place.
The existence of uranium in outcrops along the shores of Great Bear Lake in northwestern Canada had been discovered in 1900 by a pioneering geological survey of the area. In 1931 Edgar A. LaBine (1890-1977) (Figure 11) announced that the extensive of pitchblende deposits containing 30 to 60% uranium oxide. He developed the deposit under the name of Eldorado Gold Mines. The ore was rich in silver and cobalt. Radium at that time was selling at $120,000/gram and therefore the discovery was of great significance. A shaft was sunk, and a gravity plant constructed; the site was named appropriately “Port Radium” (Figure 12). Twenty tonnes of this ore were delivered in 1931 to the Bureau of Mines in Ottawa [now CANMET] for the hydrometallurgical treatment. R. J. Traill (Figure 13) was charged with developing a method for the extraction of radium from this ore. In 1933 Labine converted a plant on Port Hope, Ontario and hired Marcel Pochon (1889-1958), a former co-worker of Madame Curie who operated a uranium mine in Cornwall and who came to Canada in 1932.
The End of the Radium Industry
After World War I Joachimsthal became part of Czechoslovakia and was re-named Jáchymov. In 1938, the National Socialists started to propagate the idea of the union of Joachimsthal and the Sudetenland with Germany. This resulted in the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Nazi troupes. During the German occupation, the Radium Palace Hotel became a branch of the Berlin Hospital, the small hotels transformed into military hospitals, and the mine shafts into prison.
A New Beginning for the Uranium Industry
During World War II the extraction of uranium became a key part of the industry as nations sought to take military advantage of the newly discovered fission reaction. The physicist Leo Szilard (1898-1964) turned to his professor Albert Einstein (1879-1955) for help to write his letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt alerting him for the possibility of a uranium bomb (Figure 14). An agreement was immediately drawn and the first difficulty facing the US atomic project was overcome. On September 24, 1942 the order was given to Oak Ridge National Laboratory to construct the first uranium separation plant in the United States [5]. The atomic bomb was tested successfully on July 16, 1945 at Alamogordo testing site in New Mexico. When World War II ended in 1946, the Cold War started.
The Cold War
A joint German-Soviet company was founded to exploit the uranium deposits that stretched from Dresden in Saxony to Ronneburg in Thuringia in the former German Democratic Republic (Figure 15). So as not to arouse any suspicion, the company was named Wismut, i.e., bismuth, after another metal. The Soviets needed large quantities of uranium to build enough nuclear weapons to keep up in the arms race. A giant industry rose up, shrouded in secrecy. It is estimated that 220,000 tonnes of uranium were shipped to Russia from this region in form of uranium oxide. At one time, 130,000 miners were employed in five mines and two processing plants. The company was a state within a state with its own police force, its own hospitals, stores, sports facilities, car license plates, and residential areas. The former East German state security apparatus, Stasi, had a special spy force there.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Wismut fell apart. The Soviet Union withdrew, and work came to a halt. Between 1946 and 1990 a total of 7163 uranium miners who had been employed with Wismut died from lung cancer. For 5237 of these, the occupational exposure was recognized as the cause of the disease. At present, still approximately 200 lung cancers of former Wismut miners per year are recognized as occupationally caused [6].
Today the company employees have one task: to remedy the environmental damage that it inflicted in the region for 45 years. Wismut became an environmental rehabilitation company. Its job was to remove over 174 million tonnes of radioactive waste, dry out the mud lakes and re-cultivate the ground of a surface area of about 650 hectars. The costs are enormous; in one year the German federal government has channeled 750 million marks into the region to rehabilitate the area and return the villages to their original state.
Depleted Uranium
After World War II radionuclides such as cobalt 60 and cesium 137 became available for radiation therapy sources. To-day radium is classified as a waste and methods are devoted to fix it in a form suitable for long-term burial. Naturally occurring uranium contains only 0.7% of the isotope uranium 235. Weapon-grade uranium is +90% U235. The leftover from the extraction process is known as “depleted uranium”. As of 1998, the United States arsenal has 57,800 steel cylinders of depleted uranium in form of UF6 (Figure 16). Since depleted uranium is heavier than lead it is being fabricated into ammunition to replace lead. It was found to be more effective but has environmental problem. On impact, uranium oxide aerosol is formed due to the resulting high temperature and disperses in the environment. The problem is not radiological but due to the chemical toxicity of uranium. This weapon was used in the 1990s Gulf War and Kosovo conflicts [7].
Conclusion
The history of uranium went through many phases and was closely related to the German mining town Joachimsthal which is now the Czech town Jachymov in Bohemia. When the silver mines were nearly exhausted and Joachimsthal was about to become a ghost town, uranium was discovered there in 1781 and a pigment industry started for coloring glass. This, however, came to an end when the silver mines were exhausted and were closed at the end of the nineteenth century. The discovery of the phenomenon of radioactivity of uranium in 1896 followed by the discovery of radium in uranium ores two years later, created two new industries:
1. The spa industry which was centralized in Bohemia when the radiation from radium became known as a means for cancer treatment.
2. The radium production industry which was centralized in Belgium when rich uranium ores were discovered in the Belgian Congo, and in Canada when rich ores were also discovered in the northern territories.
During World War II, as a result of the discovery of uranium fission, there was a great demand for the metal for military purpose. Hence, the uranium industry rose again. After the War, the demand for uranium continued to increase for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the construction of nuclear reactors [8]. This however, resulted in the shutdown of the radium industry as a result of the availability of cobalt 60 from nuclear reactors.
When the uranium industry started after World War II, the ore grade was in general 0.2-0.3% U3O8. In the early 1980’s the discovery of an ore with 2.5% U3O8 at Key Lake in Canada was considered a breakthrough in ore grades. In the 1990’s, however, deposits were discovered with 15% U3O8 in Canada which rendered Canada the largest uranium producer [9]. But the problems associated with the disposal of enriched uranium and plutonium from nuclear arsenal and stockpile are now a major concern not only to nuclear engineers but also to the uranium industry in general

Kamala Harris Lives In One Of The Most Segregated Neighborhoods in Los Angeles Frontpage Mag ^ | 07/18/2019 | Daniel Greenfield
Senator Kamala Harris, who lives with her white husband in one of the most segregated neighborhoods in Los Angeles, has come out with a call for busing children to distant schools to fight “segregation”.
That’s great for Kamala, who has no children. Her stepson, Cole, who works at the William Morris Agency, which is about as diverse as his dad and S-Mamala’s Brentwood hood, won’t be bussed to work at more diverse talent agencies, and Ella, won’t be bused from her studies at Parsons School of Design (4% black) to a more diverse design college. Like most politicians, Harris wants to penalize other people.
None of these provisions and solutions to problems that don’t exist will actually apply to her and hers.
If segregation is the mere absence of diversity and requires government intervention, as she insists it does, what is Senator Kamala Harris doing to desegregate her Brentwood neighborhood?
Kamala’s $4.8 million Brentwood home is located in a neighborhood that is 84% white and 1.2% black in Los Angeles, a city that is nearly 10% black.
Senator Harris has come out for busing children to schools that aren’t sufficiently diverse. What about busing some folks from South Central to Brentwood to live across the street from her home?
“There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me,” Senator Kamala Harris whined.
Because the only way a successful Democrat can run for office is by playing the victim.
The truth is that little girl, the privileged daughter of wealthy foreign grad students, wasn’t bused.
She was flown around the world.
That’s not a “right-wing conspiracy theory”, as the media now describes any account fact-checking Kamala Harris’ imaginary past, it’s right there in the words of her own mother who couldn’t stop bragging about the wealth and power that was Kamala’s birthright by way of family and connections.
“When Kamala was in first grade one of her teachers said to me, ‘You know, your child has a great imagination. Every time we talk about someplace in the world she says, ‘Oh, I’ve been there.’ So I told her, ‘Well, she has been there!’”
“India, England, the Caribbean, Africa—she had been there," Kamala's mother told Modern Luxury magazine.
These days, Kamala actually has a great imagination. She has to work hard to imagine being oppressed.
That’s the actual little girl being displayed on those t-shirts that Kamala Harris For the People (the official and officially laughable name of a campaign funded by California millionaires) is selling for $30 bucks.
"Two decades after Brown v. Board, I was only the second class to integrate at Berkeley public schools. Without that decision, I likely would not have become a lawyer and eventually be elected a Senator from California,” Senator Kamala Harris claimed.
Kamala’s insistence that without busing she wouldn’t have become a lawyer or a senator takes place in an exciting fantasy world in which her wealthy, famous and powerful parents never existed. In the real world, her Brahmin mother, an internationally famous cancer researcher, sending her "Montreal’s tony Westmount" high school probably had a lot more to do with her becoming a lawyer.
Busing certainly didn’t put Kamala Harris on a path to the Senate and the White House. Not unless there were buses running directly to Willie Brown’s house and stopping in a shadowy spot at the back door.
It wasn’t civil rights, but an alleged extramarital affair with a dirty San Francisco city boss that made her.
Forget the trauma of busing. To get to where she was, Kamala, at 29, hooked up with Willie, at 60, and ended up in a Brentwood home with no children, but a Senate seat and a shot at the White House.
“And that little girl was me.”
It’s understandable politically and personally why Kamala would want to invent a past in which she hadn’t used her privilege and connections as a down payment on ruining her life and selling her soul.
Kamala’s story, in which busing took her out of the grim inner cities of Berkeley, where she had to watch three beatnik poets recite bad verse before she got to her bus stop, and opened the world to her, so that one day that little girl in the old creased photo could aspire to be president, is much nobler.
It’s a much more satisfying story than sleeping with a married politician and getting a BMW and a seat on a commission. There are no t-shirts at Kamala’s campaign store showing her old self driving in Willie’s BMW to the job that Willie got her, attending California Medical Assistance Commission meetings twice a month, for over $120,000 in current dollars, while still managing to miss 20% of them.
That not so little girl was her too.
If Kamala had at least allegedly slept with Willie because she was that “little girl” from the ghetto, clawing her way up the ladder, that would have been understandable. But the story is much worse. Kamala didn’t need Willie Brown to get a good job. She needed him to get jobs she didn’t deserve.
Like the one she has now and the one she wants now.
That’s the truly damning thing.
Senator Harris wasn’t a poor little girl from the ghetto. She mingled with the Nob Hill set. Her life was filled with privilege and wealth. It wasn’t desperation. It wasn’t need. It was greed.
Senator Kamala Harris has to reinvent her past because she needs to run as a victim. And because it shifts the social context behind the entire Willie Brown story to make her seem more defensible.
What can you expect from an oppressed little girl from the Berkeley ghetto trying to survive?
It’s not just Kamala rewriting her past. The media is working just as hard to reinvent a woman that the local press had covered thoroughly, while denying all the stories it had written about her in the past.
There’s always been speculation about Obama’s rise in Chicago politicians, but there’s never been much ambiguity about Kamala’s rise in San Francisco politics. We know how it happened and why.
But, now that’s a “right-wing conspiracy theory” even if it appeared in all the big California papers.
Before the media reinvented Kamala Harris as living on a Berkeley plantation with white and colored marijuana dispensaries, the Los Angeles Times had described her as a, “privileged child of foreign grad students”. These days, repeating that will see you accused of spreading right-wing conspiracy theories.
Reality, history and the media’s own stories are all notoriously right-wing conspiracy theories.
But meanwhile “that little girl” lives in one of the most segregated neighborhoods in Los Angeles, without ever saying anything about it, with her entertainment lawyer husband, in a $4.8 million home with a “spa-like” master bedroom, and a kidney-shaped pool. The median income is $112,000.
Kamala has an estimated net worth of $391,000.
Once upon a time, she got a BMW from Willie Brown. These days, it’s unknown what she drives. But, like most wealthy people in Los Angeles, Senator Kamala Harris would never actually take the bus.
Busing is for other people.

OPINION: Well, we all know these days that the Democrats are liars, thieves, obstructionist, crooks, evil, devious, un-ethical, etc. etc. and they can never be trusted with anything that they put their hands on. They are deceptive in their actions and are only looking our for themselves.
In fact, they are boarder-line anti-americans, that will say or do anything for self only. They have shown no love for this country ‘ever’!
It has always been about them not ‘us’ Americans.
No other Political Party in our Country have sent out ‘on the record’ threats of violence toward those that are ‘conservative’ and anyone that was using ‘freedom of speech’.
They will attack you, harm you, almost but kill you in public and they will dare the ‘Main-Stream Media’ to report their rootless action. You can’t prosecute them because they have Judges in places to rule in their ‘favor’ no matter how hannist the ‘crime’ is.

Tessa Virtue, A Muse In Gold
Like all of us, Nivea fell under the charm of ice dance champion Tessa Virtue. To become the brand's national ambassador after her coronation at the PyeongChang Olympic Games, the medal confided to her twirling with Elle Quebec. Pieces chosen from a gold interview serve as a nice reflection.
Flag bearer and Olympic Champion: What has your life been like since you returned from Korea?
I pinch myself. The adrenaline drops gently. The stress and the pressure too. But I often wake up and ask if I have to go to the arena to compete or practice! It takes time, I believe, to realize that our efforts have borne fruit, that our dreams have come true in such a great way and that a page has turned. And it's so rewarding to meet strangers who admit to being touched by our performance. Scott and I were not alone in this adventure.
How do you envision your role with Nivea Canada?
I am honored that the brand has thought of me. In my opinion, Nivea is synonymous with quality and reliability. Even the smell of the cream can comfort me! My mom uses it and has praised me the merits since I was a kid. Nivea and I share the same values of authenticity. When you feel good about yourself, it shows and it's beautiful. It is a leitmotif that I make mine and it is a message that I wish to transmit to women.
What is a typical day in a skaters life?
I have a hot lemon water and then I run to the arena. From 7:30-9:30 am, I skate relentlessly. After a break, I go back from 11am-1pm. Partly, the afternoon is spent in the gym, or I'm taking courses in cardiovelo or pliates, just to optimize my cardio, my tone and my flexibility. Scott and I also work with off-ice choreographers to enhance our social dance, hip hop, jazz ballet, and classical ballet skills. All this, combined with medical treatments and various sessions of mental or nutritional preparation. Back at home, between 6 and 8pm, I have a bath, I relax and then I go to bed. And that's roughly five to six days out of seven.
Who decides on your on- ice looks and runs them?
All the little details, from clothing to beauty, help to enhance a performance, tell a story in the most sensitive way possible and gain credibility with the audience. In close collaboration with the Montreal designer Mathieu Caron, I develop my outfit. Hairstyle and make-up are then complete. Everything must be harmonious but practical. I opt for clean linen, buns or classic ponytails, which clear my face. I do my hair and makeup solo, but I learn tips from different experts over time. Because you have to know those well so that the people in the stands as much as the spectators in front of their HD televisions can appreciate the setting beauty. Its almost a meditative ritual that calms me down before going on the ice.
Tell us about Montreal, where you have lived for two years now.
It was a pleasure to train in a city as charming as Montreal. It is a place that breathes the equilibrium, especially because of its cultural offer: there are shops, cafes and museums almost every corner! I lived in Little Burgundy, near the Lachine Canal. I used to frequent the Marche Atwater where I bought peonies, tulips and hydrangeas. I took my cafe September Surf, then I went to Outremont, shop at the Billie shop. Montreal has an irresistible European flair: living there is stimulating. I leave part of me there. But I'll come back!
If you were asked to define the word beauty, what would you say?
A person is beautiful when she is true and faithful to herself. Nothing is more attractive than a free being, who knows what she's worth and wants, and who does not apologize. Not surprising that I have always idealized Audrey Hepburn, for her talent as well as her strength and style. I would have liked to chat with her about something stronger than a cafe.
In everyday life, what beauty ritual do you observe?
Between show makeup, the cold of the arena, the repeated trips by plane and the stress, my skin is put in hard test! So I make sure to deeply hydrate while focusing on a simple daily routine. My mother taught me very early not to touch my face too much and not to overload it with products. I use morning and evening a make-up remover without rinsing. I follow a hydrant. And when I'm not in representation, I do not make up much: mascara and blush are enough for me!
What do you do when you want to change your ideas and get back to it?
No massage: it sends me back to my daily athlete competition (and it is more painful than relaxing.) I immerse myself in a hot bath, perfumed with lavender or vanilla and illuminate the candle, then I decompress immediately, cutting me a moment of the world and offering me a digital detox. I also like so much Scandinavian spas with thermal baths, which I discovered here in Quebec.
What playlists are you listening to?
The playlist of a 65-year-old woman, whom I would never play in a party, for fear of dying of shame! For proof: I like Marvin Gaye, The Spinners, Hall and Oates. So I'm not very, very bad ... But I'm working on it, with the help of Spotify and my sister! At times, that said, Beyonce and Rihanna play at full volume at home. #FemalePower
How do you describe your style?
It is a refined style, rather classic, but endowed with a touch of modernity. I like to invest in timeless pieces of quality: blazer, leather jacket, boots. Accessorizing everything carefully and personally, I think we managed to create a look good to yourself. I like the creations of Alexander Wang, Smythe and Elizabeth and James.
After show tours, you are planning to retire. What will you iss the most and least about competition?
Certainly, I will not be bothered at sunrise and morning in the cold arenas! But the adrenaline of the competition I will miss terribly (even if it inevitably causes anguish, pressure and stress). I am a competitor nee and I will always remain, even at 75, when I watch the Olympics on TV!
Bio express
The skater, originally from London, Ontario, was born on May 17, 1989. She is the youngest of a family of four children (two girls and two boys). Inspired by a sports dad and an ex-ballerina mom, she chose a discipline allowing her to rely on both her athelistic and artistic abilities. With her ice partner for the last 20 years with Scott Moir, she is the most successful Canadian athlete in the history of skating: five Olympic medals (three gold and two silver) and three world championship wins, in addition to innumerable national, international, junior and continental honors. In Montreal in 2016, she enjoyed training in the fold of former Olympians Marie-France Dubriel and Patrice Lauzon. It has also been able to enjoy the support of B2ten, a pilot organization by Dominick Gauthier (former freestyle skier), who deploys different strategies to best support the future champions. Fashion and business are increasingly interested in this degree in psychology, which would be very well evolve in the future. She has already created collections of eponymous glasses and jewels, together with BonLook and Hillberg and Berk. Anecdote: her anecdote is emoji’s especially the monkey covering it’s eyes, very much abusing it when she text’s Scott Moir and has fun with the crazy reactions she get’s from him.

Join us Feb 5 for our next online event.
We are bringing back not one, two, or even three, but FIVE previous CMVan speakers to address the global theme 'divergent'.
Rachel McKinley addressed the CreativeMornings community in 2018 with her compelling talk Craft (chocolate) and Creativity.
Born and raised in small town Manitoba, Rachel has enjoyed careers as a competitive ice dancer, social support worker, and paramedic, as well as obtaining degrees in microbiology and English literature at the University of Manitoba. It was during he second degree that she fell in love with the alchemy of chocolate, and abandoned her path towards medical school for a career in the kitchen. After starting with studies online, she went on to train in chocolate in Montreal, Minneapolis, New York, Paris, Florence and Pisa, and opened her business in Vancouver, CocoaNymph Chocolates & Confections, which she owned and operated for 10 years. More interested in inventing new chocolates than running a business, she pursued a career in product development. She is now an instructor at Ecole Chocolat, the head chocolatier at Purdys Chocolatier, and a freelance product developer for multiple companies in the US. She also went on to study drawing and painting at Emily Carr and is an obsessive scupltor, maker of fine food and embroidered goods, and is working on her first novel.
Darryl Condon last stood on the CreativeMornings stage way back in 2012 where he shared his talk Moving Beyond Sustainability & Building Community With Inclusive Spaces.
Darryl Condon is interested in design that acts as a catalyst for positive social change. As Managing Principal at Vancouver based HCMA Architecture + Design, his leadership has led to highly innovative public spaces including community centres, pools, recreation facilities, fire halls and libraries across Canada. After 30 years of creating these dynamic, engaging and effective spaces, Darryl is seeking to break away from preconceptions of conventional practice at every scale, to maximize the impact and potential of projects and collaborations. These efforts are focused on transforming his firm to provide creative solutions to an increasingly wider range of challenges facing our communities. Darryl is a registered Architect and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He is a Past-President of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia, a frequent speaker internationally and has been an adjunct professor at the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
Juno Kim last visited CMVan in 2019 when he shared his talk The Flow of a Creative Path.
Juno Kim is well known for being a conscious chef whose unique approach to food has garnered him awards, accolades, and a reputation as one of the best caterers and food stylists in Vancouver. After many years in this role, Kim began looking towards the future with an evolving mindset. These days Juno describes himself as a student of life, explorer of the mind and consciousness. As an entrepreneur, consultant, and freelance creative, Kim focuses on projects that inspire holistic well-being and loving-kindness.
🎶 This month we are honoured to feature a live music performance by Musician, Pianist, Composer & Improviser Craig Addy.🎵
Addy is the creator of the unique Under the Piano, a vibrational music Sound Spa for Body Mind & Soul, and was a CMVan speaker in January 2017 where he shared his talk The Mystery of Improvising.
Returning to create live visuals of the presentations is past presenter Carson Ting, who inspired us with his 2014 talk Being a Creative Rebel.
Carson Ting is an award-winning art director that has worked in the advertising business for over two decades. He began his career in Toronto after earning a Bachelor of Design degree from the Ontario College of Art and Design and has worked on brands such as Nike Jordan, Lexus, and Sony.
