it’s not that there aren’t very real challenges and difficulties that come with covid mitigation
but at the core of it even the measures that require no imagination would be highly effective in driving down transmission, which would in return make other activities that are more difficult to mitigate infection risk for less risky
like we’re sitting here pretending we don’t understand the concept of ventilation or filtration, or that the idea of staying home when sick is weird and alien, or that it’s inconceivable that putting something on your face that filters air will reduce sickness. and we’re pretending that it’s normal for people to get sick at the hospital because hospitals are overflowing and have so many outbreaks happen in them. we’re acting like doing things outdoors or opening the windows is a concept that has never been seen before.
there are many ways we could transform society into one that respects disabled people and that values health and well-being over profit, but that’s honestly not even on the table at the moment. what we’re talking about is rejecting the use of ordinary tools and technologies that have literally been used for decades. I’ve heard about teachers and healthcare workers who purposefully go out of their way to turn off air filters that have been bought for them. repeatedly, every day. I’ve watched a video where a farmer wore an N95 to clean the chicken coop due to particles, but took it off to go to the store.
what’s happening right now isn’t just “people did the calculation and decided money is more important than people’s lives” in a pure rational way. because that’s not how capitalism works anyway. we all know by now that happy workers are more productive, some companies saw good results when going remote for the first time under lockdown, etc. but the goal is to control workers as a class, and to preserve the status quo.
obviously, long covid will cost more to the economy than updating ventilation will. obviously, children who are sick all the time won’t perform as well at school. obviously, reducing infection would reduce the burden on collapsing hospitals. prevention is always cheaper than attempted treatment. but these facts don’t mean anything. people are ideologically committed to covid denialism to such a degree that it’s pushed them to do utterly absurd things. they’re overcorrecting like crazy in order to try to get to the 2019 “normal” state.
people are trying to gaslight us into believing that we were always sick all the time, that measles is a normal winter illness like the flu, that PPE measures were like this before the pandemic. scientific research and facts aren’t going to convince these people.
and it’s just ridiculous because the situation at hand is literally one where improving air quality, a multipurpose measure with no downsides whatsoever, is a no-go specifically because it could reduce covid, whether that’s the stated goal or not, and they balk at the idea of accidentally reducing covid transmission.
meanwhile, private bioscience firms are trying to invent ridiculously complex long covid treatments with hundreds of millions of funds from rich sponsors. and that’s okay, because that’s a Thing. rich genius saviors are always okay. but opening the windows for free? for prevention? to prevent getting the untreatable illness to begin with? that’s weird and unfathomable

Re: flexibility, I've been wondering - what is there to say about the impact of remote work on productivity and profit, inasmuch as it can be measured?
I can only comment on the IT sector, and only superficially: multiple employers have cited the transition to remote/hybrid work as the primary cause of the not-insignificant decrease in efficiency currently observed in companies worldwide. On the managers' end, it's being portrayed as e.g. a shift in priorities, with younger people especially being more willing to change jobs frequently and not feeling tethered to a single employer - at least according to recent Microsoft Work Trend Index reports that I (unfortunately) had to analyze LOL. Does flexibilization yield tangible profits in the "white collar"* department, too, or is it primarily and exclusively a tool of exploitation of "unskilled"* laborers, migrants, et cetera?
Asking this because the surge in popularity of remote work is certainly an unprecedented development, I'm trying to find the correct framework within which to assess its importance. (Unless this is outside your area of interest/expertise...)
Hi Adam, first I would be cautious of what some employers attribute to be the cause of lost productivity, they can lie as much as they want. It is well known how, for example, retailers in the US state of California assign loss from imagined future profits as well as actual losses from other causes to shoplifting when actual lost sales from shoplifting is as significant as a small accounting error. Taking them at face value still, I'd argue that the context of remote work is far from neutral, having been instituted rashly during the economic slowdown that the pandemic forced. I've also heard the complete opposite from other employers, such as my mother's, which has instituted a hybrid work regime *after already having established the required infrastructure and protocols* and it seems to increase productivity by the same mechanism that a shortened work week increases productivity, worker morale.
A well-implemented hybrid or completely remote work regime does increase productivity, not only because of better employee performance in some cases, but also because it can allow the capitalist to cut down on costs, a very intuitive example of this could be having to afford less physical space for an office, since not everyone has to be present to work, and there could not even be an office. Flexibilization, when done well for the employer, always increases profit margins because it makes the worker more subservient to the needs of the capitalist, it allows them to choose when and for how long the worker works, for example, or to never have to pay the salary corresponding to a full work week.
I'd also tell you not to confuse the general trend for what a subset of workers want. The trend towards flexibilization and the higher mobility of young workers between jobs is imposed on them by this trend, by shortening average contracts (Taking again Spain as an example, the average contract for people younger than 30 got as low as 17 days last year, and nowadays 0-day contracts are becoming more common). Nobody wants to work for less than a week for a salary lower than the minimum wage, it is being imposed in the name of "flexicurity", as they call it. Look it up, the European Commission avows it.
Perhaps traditional office jobs can benefit less from this very rapid hiring-firing process because of the needed education for some positions, but as long as there is a reserve labor pool of people who have worked at multiple of these places, and as long as they can continue to play with work schedules and regimes, they very much still benefit from flexibilization.
If things like the 4 day work week or remote work are popular within the general working population it still doesn't change that the class who ultimately benefits from it is not our own, and our efforts should be directed to educating workers so they understand that no benefit can be gained within capitalism that does not benefit the bourgeois class 10 times as much, and that it still does not change the immutable exploitative nature of salary work.

Articles like this about hybrid working vs full time in office really get on my nerves.
Back in 2021-2022, the conversation was making hybrid 'the best of both worlds' and balancing in-office face-to-face collaboration with the flexibility and focus that comes with working from home, tailored on a case-by-case basis depending on someone's job, position within the company hierarchy and personal circumstances.
Since then, this nuance has been flushed down the toilet and it's all about having all office workers in three, four, even all five days a week regardless, with no consideration regarding what's actually more productive.
A lot of these companies have outright admitted it's intended to get some staff to quit without having to make redundancies, yet this aspect is almost never brought up.
And this impacts some demographics far more than others. Remote work is a massive boost to so many disabled people, and the government supposedly wants more of them in the working world - so why the hell aren't they supporting one of the key measures that could get more of them in the workforce? And as for working parents (primarily working mothers, but some fathers too!), that loss of flexibility can be the difference between actually getting to spend some time with their kids or not. Or being able to access the childcare they need or not.
I'm comparatively lucky as our company is only mandating two days a week in office, but even that is pretty pointless when many of our teams are located across the country (in some cases even abroad!) and you'll be spending the whole day on Teams calls anyway...

Tips on How Productivity Metrics Helps to Achieve Business Goals
Productivity metrics are becoming a norm for businesses and organizations of all sizes, but only because it gives managers, executives, and CEOs some insight into how their employees is doing their jobs.
Productivity metrics are worth considering if you’re letting others know how good you are at your job.
In this blog post, we’ll define a few key concepts that will help you determine what kinds of productivity metrics might help your organization, as well as how to make them work for your goals.
Productivity is an incredibly general term. Before we get into how you can measure it, let’s define what productivity metrics means.
What is Productivity Metrics?
Productivity metrics are a way to measure and track progress toward specific business goals. By monitoring various productivity metrics, businesses can identify areas where they need to improve to increase overall efficiency and effectiveness.
There are several different productivity metrics that businesses can track. However, some of the most common include measures of output per worker, output per hour, and labor costs per unit of production. By monitoring these and other productivity metrics, businesses can get a better sense of where they need to focus their efforts in order to improve overall productivity.
While there are many different ways to measure productivity, tracking productivity metrics can be a helpful way for businesses to identify areas where they need to improve. By doing so, companies can ensure that they are making the most efficient use of their resources and achieving their desired results.
Ways to measure Productivity:
Productivity is how well you’re doing your job. The easiest way to measure your productivity is to compare your performance with someone with similar job responsibilities. For example, a programmer and a designer might be tasked with developing a new feature for your website. Still, their productivity should not be measured using the same metrics because they have different responsibilities.
There are several things you can do to measure how well your employees or team members are doing their jobs, and which ones work best for you depends on your goals.
1. Personal Productivity-boosting-benefits-for-remote-employees
The key metrics in this category include hours spent on tasks per day and total hours worked.
Using these metrics, you can see whether or not your employees spend enough time on their key tasks and how much time they spend on non-essential tasks.Another metric to look at is the number of daily items an employee worked on.
Your goal with this metric is to increase productivity by showing workers how they can speed up how much work they get done within a given time.
2. Team Productivity
There are several things you can do to measure team productivity, and the first thing you should do is make sure each member knows what goals the team has set for them, as well as their own goals.
Once the team has a clear picture of the company goal and an idea of their job role, they can do their work more efficiently. By tracking progress, you can identify areas where your team is falling behind and make changes to get back on track. Measuring productivity metrics can help you see how your team performs against specific goals.

Kirkliston, Wet Lothian
I have pics of the historic parish church, with 17th century graves in the cemetery, I will however cover all the history of Kirkliston in this post.
Kirkliston was designated a Conservation Area in 1977. The conservation area all lies south of the main crossroads and Main Street. It focuses on the Parish Church, The Square and the High Street but also stretches south down to encompass the remote manse and the little group of buildings at Breastmill.
The Parish of Kirkliston was originally called Liston, recorded in various forms, between 1163 and 1218. The form Temple Liston was first used about 1298 by an English chronicler undoubtedly because the Knights Templars possessed the central part of the parish, or the Barony of Liston. The Templars were suppressed in 1312 and their lands were given to the Knights Hospitalliers, the Order of the Knights of St John. If you recall I posted about Torphicen a few years ago where the Hospitalliers were based, it is around 10 miles from Kirkliston.
In 1893 the Privy Council ordered the closure of the Old Kirkyard (except for widows or widowers whose spouses had already been interred) because the ground was “Contrary to decency” and a new cemetery was opened at the East end of the Glebe.
During the early part of the 19th century, around 1830, Kirkliston had two visits from grave robbers, who dug up freshly buried corpses to sell to the anatomy schools. In 1818 the resurrectionists carried off the bodies of a young widow who died in childbirth and a widow over 80 years of age. The Kirk Session made extensive enquiries and offered a reward of 20 guineas for information which would lead to the arrest of the robbers to no avail. The Session built a watch-house at the east gate of the kirkyard and the vigilance of the parishioners prevented any further robberies taking place You will see the watch-house in my pics to come.
Several Kirkliston witch trials are recorded. The most notable witch of Kirkliston Parish was Euphame McCalzean, daughter of Lord Cliftonhall. In July 1591 she appeared before the High Court in Edinburgh charged with crimes varying from common witchcraft to conspiring against the life of King James VI. Euphame was one of nine principals, five men and four women – at ‘the conjuring of cats’ whereby the witches claimed to have raised a great storm on 1st august 1590 that nearly wrecked the ship in which James VI and his bride Anne of Denmark were coming to Scotland from Oslo. Euphame was sentenced to be burned alive on the Castle Hill in Edinburgh. This was the most severe sentence ever pronounced by the court. Ordinarily condemned felons were strangled by the common hangman before being committed to the flames. She endured her fate with obstinancy to the last. Extracts from the Linlithgow Presbytery records show there were Kirkliston witches in the 1650’s. (The height of witch hunting was during the first half of the 1600’s. The crime of Witchcraft was abolished in Scotland in 1736.
From 1969 to 2001 the west side of Kirkliston was the site of the Drambuie Liqueur Factory providing employment for up to 150 workers, men and women, in peak periods. There had also been a whisky distiller in the south of the town since 1795, which in later years became a malt factory. Both were demolished for housing. (The history of the Kirkliston Distillers are stories in themselves).
According to family tradition the recipe for the world famous liqueur was given to the ancestors of the Mackinnon directors by Prince Chares Edward Stuart for their loyalty during the Jacobite Rising in 1745. While their allegiance cannot be doubted it is however possible that the Mackinnon’s were entrusted with the secret recipe because of their skills in measuring liquids. The production of Drambuie (Drambuidhe = yellow drink) began commercially in 1903 when Malcolm Mackinnon &Son established a business at 9 Union Street, Edinburgh.
The Drambuie and Kirkliston Pipe Band was formed around the close of WWII, but went out of existence some 15 years later. A new band was formed in 1990 and a sponsorship arrangement was made with the Drambuie Liqueur Co. Ltd involving an input of around £40,000 which ensured a good beginning for the Drambuie Kirkliston Pipe Band which played at many events, festivals and processions. (Drambuie limited provided the group with one of the pipe band world’s best sponsorships, with the band supplied with two kilts and various combinations of uniforms. The band travelled extensively to raise awareness of the Drambuie brand around the world. It lost its sponsorship in 2005 when the Drambuie company withdrew sponsorship of the band after experiencing financial challenges and redeveloped its marketing and sponsorship programs. The band chose to disband rather than search for other funding. It had been set to start its first season in grade 1 after being officially upgraded. www.pipesdrums.com)

Following on from an earlier post regarding worker-fatigue, productivity and safety, I was rather shocked by the statistics in this article published today.
In the UK, farming has the poorest safety record across all industries. In 2020/21, 22 farm workers were killed at work. 36 young farmers took their own lives.
I was a little worried about Tomas in 2020 when he became trapped on the farm by COVID travel restrictions. In the year that I had known him, he was always a little nervous and lacked confidence.
Tomas volunteered... in fact, almost begged me to go to the farm to help with lambing. It was just a week or two later that COVID restrictions came into force. Some of the other farmhands viewed him with suspicion... not helped by him initially living in my farmhouse. However, Tomas stepped up to the challenge, and took charge of the extra cleaning and bio-security measures needed to combat the risks from coronavirus.
Three months after his arrival, he had gained the confidence of most of his colleagues on the farm, but I knew from our conversations that he felt isolated and lonely. I suspect many farm workers feel this way, especially when they move to a farm that is in a remote area.
At our farm, we usually we take on gap-year university, or college students. Whenever possible we try and take on two or more students who attend the same college so that they have somebody on site that they know, or can relate to.
The other issue is the small farm owners or tenants who are struggling to make a living. With COVID, the Ukraine war and spiralling costs, many farms are experiencing increasing difficulties.

VoIP Conference Calls: Benefits to Your Business
VoIP for Business is a staple in the market. The majority of businesses are using it because they recognize the benefits that it brings. VoIP for Business has been proven to be beneficial by the increase in remote work and working at home after the pandemic. This has led to a greater need for videoconferencing as a corporate communication medium.
Until recently, an employee was unreachable when they left the office, except for the occasional evening spent at home or their accommodations on the road. Communication between the staff, office and other employees was difficult.
Business VoIP solutions has revolutionized the way we do business. With Business VoIP's built-in video-conferencing capabilities, you and your team will never be out of touch, whether inside or outside the workplace. Mobility is now possible.
The benefits of conference calling to a company are indisputable if we expand the traditional definition of conference call, which is a group of people using tabletop cameras and microphones, to include group video calls with smart devices.
Cost Benefits
VoIP Conferencing is much more cost-effective than video conferencing between employees at different locations. Toll charges are avoided in many cases because the calls are made over the Internet and not the PSTN. This is especially useful for conferences that involve long-distance or international connections.
Staff mobility and accessibility has been improved
Video calling via WiFi is supported by smart devices such as tablets and smartphones, which has great advantages in terms of accessibility and mobility.
On their smart device, a member of staff can receive and make voice and video calls and take part in individual and group video conferences just as they would if seated at their desk. This can also include VoIP features like call forwarding, pick-up and voicemail retrieval, depending on the capabilities and smart device.
WiFi is becoming more accessible to remote workers in both public and client spaces. The majority of businesses offer WiFi and many public places, like shopping malls, now offer free WiFi either through their tenants or themselves. Many hotels offer free WiFi and some municipalities also provide this service.
By using public WiFi, remote workers and mobile employees can connect to the corporate network anywhere that there is WiFi.
The full integration of mobile and remote workers in the workforce has now become a reality.
Teamwork can be improved
Instead of using a cellphone or PSTN, staff can make voice and video call and conference calls with smart devices connected to a WiFi network. The ability to communicate visually with another member of staff can improve teamwork. Communication errors and misunderstandings can be reduced.
This allows mobile and remote workers to take part in teamwork, teamwork events and other teamwork activities as if they were onsite with the rest of their team.
VoIP Conference Calls are a great way to bring together teams from both local and distant locations in order to solve a problem.
The response time and quality of the responses improve. Staff can be more responsive when they are able to contact colleagues or customers at any time.
They can be more productive without worrying about losing touch with their team members.
Workplace efficiency can be improved
Staff no longer have to arrange meeting locations. All participants can take part in video conferencing from wherever they are.
Staff being available for group video calls to customers and other staff members at any time and anywhere, improves workplace efficiency.
Business VoIP can bring tangible benefits for an organization. It reduces communication costs and keeps staff in contact. It is difficult to measure the intangible benefits that improved communication brings, such as increased teamwork and morale.

Use of IoT to Enable Oil & Gas Sector Achieve Operational Excellence
Having an impact on almost all the sectors within the global economy, crude oil is one of the most highly traded as well as valuable commodities in the world. Currently, it is an important source of both energy and fuel that act as the driving force for every known industry. It is due to it that today the oil and gas industry overall is the powerhouse industry that remains responsible solely for exploration as well as refining of crude. Now, such Exploration & Production companies and oil-field service providers, they use some heavy machinery pieces, including wellheads and the pumpjacks, for drilling fluid from the deep grounds.
Apart from extraction, as part of well completion services, there comes in the transportation of the crude for which the O&G companies are highly dependent upon the huge pipelines network or the 3rd party vendors that can easily transport the oil through railways, trucks, and ships. These oil refineries constitute a downstream segment of the O&G industry and remain distinctly responsible for the petroleum-based products generation from crude oil.
It is all a big system that is known to facilitate the crude transformation to refined products, and to do this, there come several challenges in terms of oil theft, increased complexity of equipment, and also the rise within carbon footprint, which leads to quite severe social, political, industrial and for sure the environmental implications. This is why the companies associated with the O&G sector remain in search of the tech and tools which can help them counter such complexities. So, with the use of the Internet of Things, the one tech that brings in telematics capabilities and advanced analytics capabilities, they can get rid of the complete complexities that are related to the well completion services.
Vertechs- Single-stop Solution for the Oil & Gas Sector
We at Vertechs are the leading force within the IoT sector which developed a state-of-the-art product that presents the O&G industry with the opportunity to make some amazing, ground-breaking developments.
Vertechs is the end-to-end IoT solution provider offering users power for monitoring conditions as well as the performance of the assets from remote locations. It brings in the systematically designed platform, which helps to encompass the high-tech electronics and to configure the IoT dashboard suite allowing users for keeping an eye on the industrial operations and well completion services.
With the implementation of the completion solutions, there come varied benefits within the O&G industry overall. It includes some important features like,
Advanced Analytics
Cognition Capabilities
Telemetry, etc.
With the use of the above and more, there comes in revolutionization for the downstream, midstream, and upstream segments of the O&G industry. As for the remote equipment monitoring when drilling fluid, it helps boost the efficiency of the assets and enhance the plant efficiency.
Operational Excellence with Vertechs-based Asset Monitoring
Most drilling fluid procedures, they happen within the remote areas which remain under extreme environmental conditions influence. The manual inspection of such oil monitoring machines, including Pumpjacks, Wellheads, etc., isn’t easy at all, increasing the risks to the safety of the workers. Further, such machines, they operate collectively with varied other machinery pieces, and even the last-minute hiccup or malfunction, or breakdown of the single component associated with completion solutions, it can compromise operational efficiency associated with the complete extraction process.
With the help of Vertechs IoT, the companies can get the needed help for the oil exploration and production while they continue enhancing operational excellence. Further, the sensors and meters are used to measure varied parameters, including pressure, temperature, humidity, and much more. Even the thresholds could be again set for the alarm when the particular variable crosses the permissible range.
Monitoring Pumpjack
As part of completion solutions, the pumpjack remains almost similar to the hand pump that is used for drilling fluids from the wells wherein the oil pressure isn’t high enough to force itself out onto the surface. Using a prime mover or the motor powers, walking beam, and the sucker rod, one can plunge out the oil through the well. However, still there exist varied complexities that remain associated with pumpjack working.
Pumpjacks remain prone to the rod and tubing wear or pump failure because of the pump-off conditions and the fluid pound on the rod string. It can drastically increase the operating expenses and also result in unplanned downtime.
With the Vertechs equipment monitoring solution, the E&P companies receive the solutions for reducing unexpected component malfunction changes that are associated with the pumpjacks and further ensure the regulatory or the safety compliance.
Final Words
Managing equipment efficiency and assets is an essential task for any industry. With IoT use, one can receive the benefits like the predictive analytics, which allows the industries to monitor conditions and the performance related to machines and assets.
With the help of IoT-based monitoring within O&G, the companies extend the life of the expensive machines, allowing users to monitor varied parameters associated with the machine working from remote locations. It, therefore, helps to reduce the time and cost associated with the random inspection and maintenance task. It also helps the companies enhance the overall equipment effectiveness of the assets and machines.
So, go ahead and make the pick today. Using IoT solutions within the O&G industry is quite helpful and would help avoid risks and failures.
