Linking my translation of Red Candle's interview yesterday here, also typed out below. I didn't translate everything, but hopefully it's enough for fans to get a glimpse of their game dev process. Interview vod here.

Ninesols was delayed twice. As their first try at a metroidvania, they found out there's a lot more to be done. Their first game play video was actually an accident. Someone clicked the wrong button on the obs and it became a live stream.

For the interview today, we have 2 of the 6 co-founders of redcandlegames, Henry and Vincent/4wei, plus the game play designer Lighty and Art designer Pege/XiaoHe.

Game Dev Process

Back then Yi was a head shorter, pretty close to Hollow Knight. Devs call it the "Hollow Cat era". It took them 1-2 years to progress from Hollow Cat to 2D Sekiro.

Q: You've already set such a high bar for game play (hollow knight, sekiro), why did you have the same high standard for art and story as well?

Henry:(points at Vincent) this is all him. I said, just focus on the game play! Then he decided to throw in the story

Vincent: I didn't set it out to be so dialogue heavy. But simple gameplay doesn't keep gamers playing, they have to be invested in the world to want to play more.

Vincent: I wanted to save budget so I thought, comics, they're simple enough. Turned out they were costly too. Pege got the other end of that. She drew all the in-game comics.

Pege: Comic works in that you can get up close to the characters and see the details, their expressions.

Their initial inspo for the artstyle was Akira... really reaching for the heights of everything

On the designing process:

Vincent: pacing comes first, whether it's story, combat, or the gaming experience

About 35mins in: Lighty explains the initial concept of TaoPunk

Vincent come up with keywords and Pege designs the character. For example, Goumang was "princess, tsundere", Lady Ethereal was based on "Zhuangzi and the butterfly dream".

40min, Pege explains the character designing process

Pege had the hardest time designing JieQuan. Girls are easier.

Vincent: he's the typical straight macho dude

MCs: what do you mean straight? All I see is 🌈

Vincent wanted there to be a low point for the gamer, since the first 3 bosses were relatively easy. He drew inspiration from Bloodborne and MGS, and JieQuan was born as Yi's tormentor.

Pege's favorite character is Ji, based on his character design and gender.

Vincent: I said Ji can be a they, but Pege insisted on him being male.

MC: So we can actually see stuff under his skirt

Henry: Yi had to struggle to not get flashed during the fight

Lighty also likes Ji best, because of his character. He likes his views as an immortal.

Henry also likes Ji best, because of his combat pattern. Out of all the bosses, his combat pattern is the only one thats entirely original. He wanted to make a 3rd stage.

Since all the characters came from Vincent, he doesn't have a favorite, but is impressed by how popular some of them are. Lady Ethereal's fight was actually the least costly. The platforming was a budget choice. Including the jumpscare, Ethereal was the easiest stage to make.

Vincent: Even the bgm. For Lady Ethereal, I didn't need to tell the composer what I want, they finished it perfectly.

Henry: This is a collaboration where everyone provides their expertise, and Lady Ethereal is an example of us working extremely in sync.

They ran out of time and funds at the research center, and were not entirely satisfied with it even when the game launched.

Solarian was based on Middle Chinese. Old Chinese sounds close to Vietnamese and is too hard for the VAs to pronounce. Vincent thinks since the game is sci-fi in ancient times, a new language is needed for immersion.

Everyone's stressed at the end of the project: it's been five years, and the game hadn't been tested by the mass public, so they weren't sure how it'd be received

Solarian language and Voiceover

Vincent: in Taiwanese we have checked tones, libiodentals, we digged deeper into these traits and referenced Taiwanese/Hokkien, Hakka, Cantonese and Middle Chinese for the Solarian language. Our Solarian expert, Sheng-Han Lin worked on it for 3 months. He even wrote a program where it converts a word into Solarian automatically, complete with KK phonetic symbols.

Basic Solarian words/phrases:

Bi³ Suen² = big brother

Shuai² In³ = Hello Friend

Why⁴ Song⁴ = Stop right there

Uen Zai² Chok = got it (I think?)

Ket Do³ = thank you

Vincent: first thing I said to the VAs was "sorry". Even after the recording process they still weren't sure what they were saying 😂

Many thanks to our voice director Neven Chang. It's the VAs performance that convinced me that Solarian is an actual language.

The Solarian characters came out of the need for there to be inscriptions on the background architectures, but modern Chinese characters breaks the immersion, so the art team came up with the idea to use the CangJie input method.

Vincent: initially we wanted to use the oracle bone script, but it's too time consuming, we needed something systemized. We do have our own Solarian font tho.

Q&A section!

First question: are there plans for future nine sols DLCs?

Vincent: we still have a lot of work, like console ports and adding more languages, plus the crowndfund reawards... so currently we're looking to finish these first.

Vincent: as you know, we are a bunch of overachievers, so if there is a DLC, there's no telling how long we'll work on it... but atleast for me, I do hope to tell more stories in this world. That's all I'll say for now.

Q: will there be merch?

A: Yes, all the crowdfund rewards will also be sold as merch, like the art book and physical game pack, but at a higher price. Not the figure though, they're already finished, to make more we'll go bankrupt.

Unless, there's a really high demand for it 👀

Q: were there any additional plot you had to cut due to lack of resources?

A: Chien's boss fight, Ji's 3rd phase, Yi fighting himself in Eigong's soul sanctum, a TianHuo last boss, Abacus was supposed to be Yi from the past, Kanghui, the dragon... we cut a lot

Vincent: There are two plotlines I stood my ground on: the revenge plot, and the relationship between Yi and Heng.

We actually changed Shuanshuan's story a lot. Initially he was supposed to be super energetic and run around all of New Kunlun.

Q: there are a lot of ways the player can fight in #ninesols, were you worried about it being too hard?

A: Yes. It's very parry focused, so if you can't parry, you're dead. The Story Mode was made out of this fear. But from the response we've got so far, it seems to be ok.

Vincent: the real problem is gamers having false expectations. Souls fans get frustrated with the parrying and combat fans get frustrated with the dialouges. So we have to let the gamers know, this isn't hollow knight, isn't Sekiro, this is Nine Sols.

Q: what do the lyrics in the bgm mean?

A: they are all really simple. Like "heroes are forged in agony". For Fuxi and Nuwa, their keyword was "Peony Pavilion", opera related, so the composer incorporated 牧虎關 into their battle bgm.

All #ninesols boss music was composed by @/FFXX_sound. 4-5 of the songs were recomposed after betaing. The boss fight in plumblossom village wasn't supposed to be this hard, but the bgm was too fire, so the team adjusted it.

Vincent: the composer could choose whether to use Solarian or Mandarin lyrics. I was there during recording. We got a talented Taiwanese men's choir to sing for us. Four professional singers singing "Huh! Hah! Heroes are forged in agony!" It looked ridiculous.

For the ending song, redcandle wanted to connect to the international audience, and Collage fit that perfectly. Plus our fans kept recommending them to us. Communication was smooth, apparently Natsuko is a gamer and really liked us.

Taopunk was a mix of Eastern and Western cultures, so it was decided early on that there would be English lyrics in the ED.

There was an ARG on discord where fans can uncover the ED bit by bit.

Q: what are some challenges for the EN locoalizatuon?

A: It was pretty smooth, we had a lot of help from our discrod server, including JP proofreading. Both EN and JP TL was actually done in a month before release. We just posted our beta dialougues and everyone came to help us.

Lady Ethereal used to be FuDie, but it sounds terrible in English, so she was renamed.

KangHui used to be GongGong, but it's too confusing to non mandarin speakers.

Eigong too, she used to be Yigong, Yi as in change, but players may mistake her to be related to Yi.

Solarian society trivia:

-they are a matriarchal society

-the average age of death is 140

-cats are evolved from Solarians

They are working on more languages, all of them EU ones. MC asked if there are plans for SEA languages. They say that'll require ppl fluent in these languages, since the other TL are mostly done by community members/fans.

2-3days after release, their text file was hacked. It's a Google doc, Lighty went on there and found someone typing Italian text there, all correct dialougues. They kicked them out then emailed the Italian.

The Italian : I'm just a player, I just want to help.

They translated pages of text, the team was terrified. Security breach!

the Italian said thank you to the team for being patient with them, cause they did the same thing with other games and got severe responses.

RedCandle: thanks but please don't ever do it again.

Q: are you satisfied with the response from non CN speaking players?

A: Yes. Most of the reviews we got were English. It's our goal anyway, to break the culture barrier.

There are of course some surprises.

MC: you mean the furries?

A: the amount of fanart was unexpected

Vincent: I was also surprised by the response we got on reddit. We actually realized our goal, so I was pretty happy with that.

Q: any plans for a new game?

they've worked on nine sols for 5 years already, pretty drained right now, so (as a team) theres no new content planned yet

Discussing the ending...

Devs consider the true ending a good ending. Its ok if life has no meaning, having lived is enough and all that.

And ED is Collage's take on the ending.

timing was definitely on hanni’s side as the moment she stepped on minji’s porch, the taller walked out of her front door with a white jacket over her pajamas.

“are you kidding me minji…”

“what? completes the doc kim look i think.”

hanni shook her head laughing before taking a seat on the front steps of the house. minji shrugged and followed, leaving a small space in between the two.

“so what’s with the emergency meeting?”

hanni hummed, her gaze fixed on the empty road in front of them.

“how do you know you like someone?”

minji smirked hearing the line. whether she was proud hanni was getting somewhere, or was excited she’d get to talk about her ultimate rizzler skills, she liked where the conversation was going.

“ohhh~ we’re getting into this huh?”

“hey i’m asking a serious question here, didn’t you want to help?”

minji laughed at the shorter, shifting herself sideways to lean on the handrails of the steps and to face her friend.

“i don’t know.”

“…are you fucking serious?”

“hehe no i’m kidding! i figured out i was at least interested in wonyoung when we were partnered up for mrs. choi’s media literacy project. we had to spend a lot of time together and i don’t know… i got to know her better and i found myself wanting to spend more time with her.”

“is that it?”

“well… i knew it was something else when i started messing up my drills if she was watching…”

“WHAT?”

“HEAR ME OUT-“

“this is down-bad behavior, kim!”

“and you walking in the rain to cook breakfast isn’t?”

hanni’s smile slowly dropped into a more blank face, but her eyes were clear and full of thought. she stayed silent for a couple more seconds before minji started snapping her fingers in front of her face.

“bro. seriously.”

“sorry.”

“don’t worry. but anyways, yeah that’s how liking someone feels, other than the physical side effects like the butterflies and crap. i doubt you’ve never felt it before… you probably just didn’t identify it as such.”

hanni nodded slightly, still choosing to bask in the combination of the silence and the cool wind, a reminder of the christmas season that was beginning. the village, or well, the town in general was a sight during the holidays. lights and decor everywhere, snow sculptures on the frontyards, a couple of christmas themed food trucks at the park. during the season of late november to early january was always the happiest and prettiest the small city was.

“an idiot can figure it out faster than you, you know?”

the vietnamese-australian flinched at the sudden voice, having completely forgotten she was at her best friend’s house after sitting on the porch, completely lost in thought.

“what?”

minji let out a deep sigh (something she’s been doing ever since she decided to get herself invested in hanni and y/n’s business) and shook her head.

“the pieces are all laid out in front of you. what’s taking you so long to put them together?”

hanni looked down at her clasped hands, fiddling with her fingers and cracking every joint with deep inhales and exhales every time.

“i’m scared, okay?”

“i mean i got it the first time, you know. you weren’t very sure about everything. but like now you literally….“

hanni took another deep inhale and exhale before deciding to continue.

“y/n’s the closest friend i have. the person i value the most. one i hold at utmost respect and regard. i could probably even say i care more for her than my own damn family.”

“well okay. wasn’t expecting a speech! but if that’s the case then why aren’t you-“

“that means i have everything to lose if i mess things up.”

the shorter girl finally looked in minji's direction, her eyes, though not watery, were dark and heavy almost. her expression a mix: frustration, tiredness, disappointment.

“pham, this is y/n we’re talking about.”

“i’m very well aware.”

“so?”

“every direction i look… if i dug into this whole emotions thing deeper, every direction i look would end up with me losing her. if i figure out i don’t like her and tell her straight up, i lose her. if i figure out i do and i mess things up because i have no idea what the hell i’m doing, i lose her.”

minji chuckled, very softly so as to not anger her friend in front of her. 

“those are all uncertain endings, pham. how are you so sure of it when you haven’t crossed the bridge yet?”

she gave no response.

“the one thing you think you’re avoiding is bound to happen for sure with the way you’re going about this.”

still silent.

“this isn’t just any friend, right? you said it yourself. this is lee y/n we’re talking about, right?”

hanni nodded, following along.

“is she not worth the risk? is your friendship with her not worth exploring feelings you’re so scared to look into?”

hanni stared silently at her hands in front of her, slow and heavy breathing the only sound that could be heard from her.

“you know the answer already pham. you know what to say. i think i do too. and if anything encourages you to actually say it, it’s that you’re starting to lose her already.”

hanni let the words sink in, closing her eyes and letting out another sigh. though her words were stern, minji’s tone never lost its light and comfort. as much as she wanted things to be better for y/n, she’s hanni’s best friend too.

the two exchanged a couple more words on the subject, hanni not forgetting to thank minji and whoever philosopher possessed her that night. things are a lot clearer now. 

she made the bed, now she must lay in it.

this is probably a very stupid question but is there any origin of adrien and kims last names in this au (also may i ask why you changed them /genq)

Mod CN: So Adrien's canon last name "Agreste" is the French name for the Greyling Butterfly species (as a bonus, Adrien's first name could also mean "Dark", so Adrien's full name is "Dark Butterfly") And since Gabriel in our rewrite is no longer Monarch, that surname became null and void. So we changed his surname to Lachance, which means "Luck" in French. (So yeah Adrien's full name in our rewrite is "Dark Luck", which is more fitting as bad luck seems to run in the family. As for Kim, it's moreso playing it safe than sorry. Major note here, both me and Mod LB are white/passing, and ik Kim is Vietnamese, but "Chien" also means "Dog" in French and it looked bad in a French context.

Xanxus was born with a rare flame called the Flame of Wrath. The special characteristic of this Flame is extreme destructive power that can reduce anything to ashes.

He’s one of the only KHR characters that can manifest a flame in his hands, without the need for rings/weapons, unlike the others.

KHUN CHAI FILM TITLE IN VIETNAMESE AND CHINESE

Do you know that while being broadcasted in Viet Nam, the lakorn Khun Chai was call "Mong Ho Diep" which means "Butterfly Dream". In my thought, I think that Tian was like a caterpillar wanting to break his coccoon to become a butterfly and to be free to live as his true nature. Just so nice title!!!

This remind me of the Chinese ancient story " Butterfly Lovers" (original name: 梁山伯與祝英臺). In ep.5, Tian told this story to Yingpin to persuade her that their arrange marriage would not solve her family's problems and she should not miss any chance with the one she loved like the main character in that story.

In Chinese, the title for Khun Chai is "断袖之恋：深宅绅士", literally means Cutting-Sleeves love: the gentleman with secret.

Anna Blue comes from a line of witches that are very magic forward, they don’t want her to fall into a mortal human life and isn’t super thrilled that she’s pursuing law instead of just investing herself entirely in coven related matters

her English name is named after the Anna’s blue butterfly species because bướm means butterfly in Vietnamese and they wanted to stay true to her name’s meaning

her vibes is very legally blonde where she comes off pretty ditzy airheaded but is effortlessly intelligent but that’s aided by the fact that she so casually uses magic in her day to day including her studies. she’d pass without magic but she’s impatient and uses it often to speed the process up

her family is a long line of women and they only have female children. wonder woman vibes where they actually don’t have males in the family and instead of human ways of conceiving they sacrifice a male life for every daughter they birth. the daughter does inherit this male sacrifices attributes but these kids are ritual born not born through human means of conception

Anna Blue’s storyline revolves around how she had gone back in time for a class assignment and in doing so had let an insanely powerful ancestor of hers escape into the present day

she was a witch that was sentenced to death because her whole thing was eradicating and enslaving humans, very evil mastermind world domination vibes. Anna Blue had gone back in time to when she had been alive and at her peak and hadn’t realized that the door to the present world hadn’t been sealed properly

she doesn’t realize she let this witch out until a string of murders starts popping up around them and they notice a pattern. all those murdered are ancestors of people that had worked to sentence the witch to death, both humans and witches alike

so now Anna’s trying to locate this ancestor again and has to figure out how to send her back to her timeline without dying

has a white ferret familiar who you can usually find slumped around her neck like a little scarf. her name is lola because as a kid Anna Blue thought it was a fun name to say

in general her vibes are very legally blonde meets sabrina the teenage witch from the 90s meets any of those early 2000s or 90s “chick flick” esque movies

You know, the 11th season of My Big Fat Fabulous Life is almost here on the day after Labor Day and there's a new trailer.... Things will get heartbreaking and extremely ugly. My first thought of this trailer as Glenn Thore says goodbye his late wife Babs who passed away in December of last year but filmed a damn funeral for tacky reality TV show... That's disgusting, embarrassing, disrespectful, emotionless and super gross, I mean, come on. Funerals are for private used only just like my grandma's celebration of life when I went to Mexico for anniversary prayers to support my mom and also she's more mature than Shit Whit Thore, no livestream or shitty untalented reality TV show. Although they've should used filming butterflies or doves as of sign of Christian or Catholic human went to heaven but the goddamn casket. That's fucking gross and emotionless creepy. Even Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and 5-part John Aniston tribute episodes on Days of Our Lives is much better emotional than disgusting 11th season premiere of Warner Bros Discovery's worst show that has bad influence towards girls. Girls who was born in the late 80s and early 90s used to be huge fans of Whitney Thore but after that, they'll better off with their childhood heroines The Powerpuff Girls, Totally Spies or even Disney's action comedy Kim Possible, so was pop stars like Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Selena and Taylor Swift. The Thore kids decided to make her heartbreaking dad cheer up, an pick-me-boot adventure call bucket list. Just like the 2007 movie starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson various stuff from skydiving to tattoo which was wholesome. But from wholesome to trashy soap crap when Glenn is visiting a woman who is a daughter of Vietnamese woman he fall in love out of wedlock and. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ She's was the half-sister of Whitney and Hunter! Reddit users are having a field day to continue mocking her hugest fat ass until the show is over for good. My eyes are roll for this toxic cringe. 🙄 Shitney is bullying her faked friend who is 29 drinking his morning coffee. Glenn's bucket list when his kids and Shitney's friends are having a whirlwind trip to Switzerland and... I'm laughing at the cringeful moments possible because the trailer ends with dramatic music. 🤣🤣🤣 Poor little Whitney suffered an health issues all because of her obese bullshit (My message to her: don't blame PCOS) and the fucking helicopter fit for prissy narcissistic princess arrives at the nick of time as she went to Switzerland hospital. What the fuck!!! I thought the early seasons were decent but later.... drama bullshit about me me me and even toxic nonhealthly feminists are praised Whitney Thore while normal healthy feminists are scolded her (used to be fans of Whitney Thore but they've rage quit). After the trailer was online Whitney post it on Instagram either I'm laughing cringe or petty or felt bad but either way, I'm about to find out why. The answer is petty. Whitney's haters don't hate Glenn and Hunter, they hate her. Glenn answers it which was inaccurate. His late wife is an reality TV star while Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II is historical figures, he cannot compare famous figures to the hypocritical unlovable fatso's lovable mom. Vittoria Rosa - another name Lila might pick if she had the LB miraculous. It means Red Victory in Italian. Manna Cielo - literally translated it’s ‘Manna from Heaven’, but it also means godsend. Because Lila really thinks she’s God’s gift to humanity huh. It could kinda work for any miraculous tho

La Fortuna - this is good fortune in Italian.

Prospérité - another name that means good fortune, I think it could fit Aurore?

Felis - Felis is the genus for house cat. I think it’s kinda cool, but I feel like something’s missing.

Meowgical Girl - listen this one’s mostly a joke but I know someone in this show would pick a name like this-

Abeille Dorée - it means gilded bee! I thought maybe Chloé or Aurore would pick it.

Mellifera - Mellifera means honey in Latin, and it comes from the genus of the Asian Honey Bee

Oleander - Super poisonous flowers, honey made from oleander flowers was thought to be poisonous. It’d be a cool name for a villain bee holder.

Toxine Juane - yellow toxin 

Essaim Ensoleillé - this means Sunny Swarm, I think it’s cute both ways tho. Rose would probably pick it.

Terrapin - a terrapin is a freshwater turtle, but it sounds cool lol. Idk maybe Juleka would pick it??

Ẩn Núp - this is Shelter in Vietnamese. It sounds cool, I think Kim would pick it.

Mai Rùa - this is Turtle Shell in Vietnamese.

Rùa Xhan - this is just Green Turtle in viatnamese. It could be good for Kim?

Astuce Amber - it means Amber Trick. I think Nathanael, Luka or Mirelle might pick it? I’m not sure lol

Regina Viola - Regina Viola just Purple Queen in Italian. It’s another of those names I think Lila would pick for her ego. (And it’s better than just having her be Hawkmoth in the future)

PEACOCK:

Chute de Plumes/Plumes Chute - Feather Fall is kinda cute tho. I think Chute de Plumes sounds more refined though. It’s cool either way, I think.

Ailes De La Morte - it means Wings of Death. It’s a little bit longer but like- it just sounds so cool as a villain name. Like tell me you wouldn’t be intimidated by someone called Wings of Death-

DOG:

Chien Bronzé - lol ok- so the translation is just ‘Tan Dog’ but it sounds cooler in French ok shhhh leave me alone lol shhh

RAT:

Pack Rat - I don’t know who this would fit, but it’s cool lol. I feel like it could be a hero or a villain name too. Like it’s not overly villainous, but it’s not super heroic or cutesy either

Topo Rosa - Topo is just mouse in Italian, and Rosa is pink. It’s not super villainous, but. Yeah lol.

Malizia Rosa - This one’s sounds a little more villainous, it means Pink Mischief.  I dunno lol

Wyvern - I don’t really know who this would fit, I feel like it could be anyone lol

Spitfire - I feel like this would fit Alix really well or maybe Sabrina?? Idk why on Sabrina- it just-?? Lol. I feel like it could also fit Chloé maybe.

Garnet Wyvern - this just Wyvern but with a little extra. I feel like naming scheme wise, it fits Alya.

Lǎohǔ/老虎 - this is Tiger in Chinese. I think this could be a good name for Sabine? If she got a miraculous

Tiáowén/ 条纹 -this is just stripes in Chinese, I think it’s fit Marinette

Force Violette - Violet Strength, it’s cool and kinda cute, I feel like Alya or Mylene might pick it?

Lán tù/蓝 - Lán tù is blue bunny in Chinese.

Poulette - Poulette is chick

Petit Poulette - a very teeny tiny chick lol. It’s cutsey, maybe Rose or Mylene would pick it.

Mare Brun - brown mare, I think Sabrina would pick a name like that. It’s kinda simple, but I think it fits her

Mareon - Mare + Marron (brown), lol I think it’s a funny pun

Azure Serpent - I'm not sure who’d pick a name like this. Maybe Juleka, Alya or Marinette.

Terrore Cielo - it’s ‘Sky Terror’ in Italian. I figured Lila should have a couple names that were intimidating.

Shānyáng/山羊 - goat, Sabine or Marinette?

Alpiniste - Alpiniste is mountain climber in French. I’m not sure who it would fit. Maybe Alya or Alix? It could also fit Felix.

MONKEY:

Gold Simian

Mandrill Brun - Mandrill’s are the strongest monkey species, so the name could fit Ivan. Maybe Kim. Brun is just brown

Macaque - You could add gold or brown to any of these lol, this one and the next three are just species of monkeys.

Howler - It sounds kinda cool. I don’t know who it would fit, though.

Callithrix - Probably Alix, because her Bunnix naming scheme is just animal+ix lol

Calydonian - the Calydonian Boar was a monster in Greek Mythology. I’m not really sure who’d pick it.

The part that got me though was when you said “I wonder what type of animal form they take factors into that” - that’s where the gears in my head started turnin’

So I went snooping on each animal counterpart associated with each sin.

1.) SLOTH: are cats sensitive to cold?

6.) GLUTTONY: are pigs sensitive to cold?

In this case I will refer mostly to Vietnamese Potbellied Pigs because as far as I know, we haven’t actually seen Ildio’s pig form yet - one of the only depictions is Lawless’ stage depictions of the 7 vampire siblings in ep6… and based on his stage depiction of Ildio’s pig form, Viatnamese Vietnamese Miniature Potbellied Pigs seem like they’d be the common type of pig that seems to fit that shape/size.

“The ideal temperature range for a potbelly pig is 65-88°F. Pigs in winter do not need any type of supplemental heat down to at least -20°F. Most potbelly pigs require more feed to maintain heat production and body condition; meaning that housing aside, the more feed/calorie intake, the easier it can be for pigs to regulate their body heat.”

However, seeing as Ildio is an ageless vampire with the mother-effing holy grail of metabolisms, we don’t know if his MASSIVE calorie intake, that he doesn’t really gain much/any weight from, will actually help him in cold weather.

7.) LUST: are butterflies sensitive to cold?

Snow Lily’s butterfly appearance is probably one of the most exaggerated of the 8 servamp animal forms. That gorgeous shade of pink and black aside, I couldn’t find any real buttwrfly species with that wing pattern or wings shaped like that. So color and wing pattern aside, I’d say the closest real-world butterfly to Snow Lily would be a variation of Swallowtail Butterfly.

Butterflies are cold-blooded critters, however, generally speaking butterflies won't fly when temperatures are less than 55-60°F.

LUST SENSATIVE TO COLD? ✅ (yes)

8.) MELANCHOLY: are foxes sensitive to cold?

Even though Tsubaki’s two tails seem to be a play of of the legends of Nine Tail Fox, generally speaking based off his other details being black fox with white on the end of his tail(s), he is most likely a Silver Fox; which is a type of Red Fox.

The upper critical temperature of the red fox is probably between 86-89°F. An official temperature range of what is too cold for red foxes is more or less unknown or unofficial at best. The arctic fox is said to be able to tolerate temperatures as low as -72°F but red foxes haven’t occupied the tundra in the past partly because it was too cold; with their longer ears and limbs, they lose heat faster than their arctic cousins. So we know the average red fox can tolerate and survive cold temperatures, but most likely not temperatures like their arctic counterparts live in.

the most interesting thing is–

when I first got into SERVAMP, I remember being curious where the concept of ‘the different sins transforming into animal forms’ came from. After a little research, I found that there is a history to it! A very detailed account of the origins and representations of them within history. And a small portion discusses the animal depictions of the original 7 deadly sins⬇️

“An allegorical image depicting the human heart subject to the seven deadly sins, each represented by an animal (clockwise: Toad = Avarice [greed]; Snake = Envy; Lion = Wrath; Snail = Sloth; Pig = Gluttony; Goat = Lust why? I have no idea; Peacock = Pride).”

So Jeje and Ildio’s animal forms are the only ones true to the original depictions of their associated sins.

Pride as a peacock does make sense… but I can understand adding the bat into the mix because - vampires.

I get why they’d change Kuro to a cat instead of a snail because I can’t see a snail being threatening at all unless it’s either severely poisonous or Gary… like, supernatural vampire powers or not, Kuro as a snail wouldn’t be very badass.

Why the ever living f*ck would a goat reprint lust? Originally I was going with the possibility that goat could be related to ram, ram represents Aries, Aries is one of the most lustful zodiac personalities… but no, apparently the goat represents the Devil, lust, lubricity and the damned… so that’s fun - I prefer the butterfly thank you very much.

Apparently frogs symbolize greed because it is a greedy creature in desiring to live in both worlds- on the land & in the water… okay I guess?

& lastly even though the Lion role is also occupied by Kuro within the series, I can understand Wrath not maintaining the original Lion role swing as Wrath is female and they probably wanted a male to hold the depiction of Lion so that the could use the lion’s mane, again, to add to the badass factor… regardless I don’t think Wrath as a lioness would have played out the same way… is it sexist when referring to animals? Whatever - that’s a question for another day.

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson (BIG BIG BIIIIIIIG trigger warning for disordered eating and ed behaviors as well as self harm, but this book is honestly amazingly written and i find myself rereading it at least every other year tbh)

Butterfly Yellow by Thanhhà Lai is probably one of the best books i have ever read in my life, and if you take any recs from this list, this book should be the one you take. it's incredible heartwarming and tear-jerking, has one of the most interesting and creative writing styles i've personally ever come across, and despite struggling so much w reading, i finished it over the course of 2 or three shifts at the bookstore when we were slow, i truly couldn't put it down. it also provides a very personal example of the refugee experience in Vietnam, from an exceptionally talented Vietnamese author!!!

Hope For the Flowers is a super super cute easy read, i believe probably targeted towards children but not overtly so, w v cute illustrations and a lovely message!!!

the last book i successfully finished was The Secret History, if dark academia, murder, and 1970s era teenage debauchery and pseudo-pretentiousness is ur jam i highly recommend!!

one i read a few years ago that's stuck w me (and i mean literally, this book straight up haunted me when i worked at books-a-million) is We Were Liars by E. Lockheart, its got a good twist and is an easy read!!

Michael keeps going back to the same coffee shop and no, it has nothing to do with the cute barista.

Or 3 times Michael went to Luke's coffee shop to see him and 1 time Luke visited Michael at his job

It starts on a Wednesday. Michael’s bored, scrolling through his phone at the front desk, trying to avoid doing work. He knows he should go shelve some books, or do a lap around the library to check on things, but he can’t focus on anything. He’s trying to kill time until it’s acceptable for him to go on his lunch break and grab something to eat or drink.

“Oh god, I found the perfect drink for you,” Calum whispers next to him, tugging lightly on Michael’s sleeve. Michael frowns, glancing over at Calum, getting a phone shoved into his face in response. Michael pulls his head back, grabbing onto Calum’s wrist and trying to adjust it so he can see the screen better. It’s an instagram post on Calum’s feed, advertising a coffee from the local coffee shop. The caption claims that it’s a vanilla rose latte. Michael hates that Calum knows him well enough to know that Michael will 100% drink anything with floral flavors in it.

“Don’t act so disgusted,” Michael mumbles, shoving Calum’s phone back to him. Calum laughs.

“It’s just weird that you want to put florals in your coffee. It tastes like soap.”

“It does not. Stop insulting my taste,” Michael says, voice rising a little bit at the end of the sentence. He ducks his head when one of the reference librarians looks over at them. Calum raises his hand in apology, turning to face Michael.

“You like weird coffee. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Just thought you might be interested. It’s that new place too. Down the road.”

“Is this your way of trying to bribe me into getting us sandwiches from the Vietnamese place for lunch?”

“Pretty please?” Calum says. Michael sighs, pretending to be put out.

“Fine. Text me your order. I’ll swing by. You owe me dinner though,” Michael says, standing up. Calum brightens up, smiling. Michael heads into the back, clocking out for his break and telling his supervisor he’s going to grab lunch. They nod, waving him out when Michael grabs his bag from his little station and heads out to his car. Michael calls in their lunch order from his car and decides to stop and grab coffee first on his way there.

Luckily, the coffee shop is a quick drive. Their town is small enough that everything sits within a ten minute drive of each other. It makes it easier to pop out and grab lunch on the days he’s too lazy to make it. Michael knows where the coffee shop is, even if he hasn’t been yet. It’s only been open for a few weeks and everytime he and Calum mean to go, they get distracted and go somewhere else or forget. Today though, Michael is determined to get his rose coffee from this place. 

Michael parks in the lot, grabbing his wallet from his backpack and leaving his car, locking it behind him. He pushes open the coffee shop door, relieved to see it’s still empty and quiet inside, little bell over the door jingling. 

A tall blonde man, pops his head out from behind the back area, grinning widely when he sees Michael.

“Hi! What can I get you today?” he asks, coming up to the counter, beaming. Michael’s offended that the barista is pretty and therefore, Michael has completely forgotten his order. It’s not his fault the guy is tall and blonde, with blue eyes and dimples, curls pulled back into a messy bun. His name tag reads Luke. Michael doesn’t stand a chance.

“Um, I saw your post. About the vanilla rose latte. Do you still have it? I know it’s been a few days.”

“Yes! You’re the first person to order it. I got these little sample bottles of different flavors, but so far no one has asked for it,” Luke says, beaming widely as he grabs the bottle and holds it up. Michael blushes.

“Well, I’m your guy. My friend teases me endlessly about the fact that I like adding weird flavors into my coffee.”

“You’re just the kind of guy I need then,” Luke says, winking. Michael blushes. He’s never going to be able to come back here.

“Can I get a small?”

“Sure. Regular milk fine?”

“Yeah,” Michael says. Luke rings him up, rattling off the price. Michael swipes his card, signing on the screen as Luke starts to make his drink.

“So, do you work around here?”

“Yeah, I work down the block at the local library at the front desk. Wanted to stop in on my lunch break.” 

“Well, I’m glad you stopped in. I can finally tell Ashton someone likes my drink, ” Luke says, moving around behind the counter. 

“Ashton?” 

“My partner. Business partner. I am very single,” Luke rushes out, blushing red and turning his attention to the coffee. Michael blushes too, worried he’s been caught out staring at Luke. Just because he's a pretty guy and Michael never gets the chance to see anyone under the age of 60 who isn’t a child doesn’t give him the right to stare at Luke. 

“Well, it’s a good thing you have him,” Michael piped up, blushing harder when Luke glances at him over the espresso machine, smiling. 

“Yeah. He’s a wonderful friend. Terrible coworker,” Luke says. Michael laughs, earning him a wide grin from Luke. 

“Well, here you go! One vanilla rose latte! You’ll have to let me know how it is,” Luke says, sliding the drink across the counter. Michael takes it, sipping from it. 

“Good. The rose isn’t too overpowering. Just the right blend,” Michael says. Luke beams and it fills Michael’s chest with a flare of something. He checks his phone, swearing when he sees the time. 

“I gotta go, break’s gonna be up before I know it. Thanks for the drink Luke,” he says, turning to the door. Luke calls out a goodbye behind him as Michael rushes out so he can get their sandwiches on time and make it back to work. 

Michael manages to make it back to work on time with enough time to finish his sandwich. The coffee sits with him the rest of the afternoon, keeping him warm and reminding him of Luke’s smile. Maybe Michael will have to go back more often for coffee from the shop.

Michael lasts about three days before he goes back. It’s late Saturday morning and Michael’s finally dragged himself from his bed and his apartment to run errands on his day off. Well, run errands once he gets some coffee, which has nothing to do with wanting to see cute barista Luke again. Even if Michael’s foregoing Starbucks and Dunkin’ just to go out of his way for Luke’s little coffee shop. 

Calum has teased him endlessly for the last few days about it. All it had taken was Michael mentioning that maybe the barista was cute and Calum had lost it. He keeps teasing Michael about going back just to see Luke or making dumb coffee puns for flirting. Michael’s relieved that Calum’s working today, so he can go to the coffee shop without being teased for it.

The shop is empty when Michael shows up. Granted, it's mid-morning but it’s still a Saturday. Michael was expecting a least a bit of a crowd. Not that he’s complaining. More personal time with Luke. Which, maybe Michael shouldn’t be thinking like that about the barista.

Luke’s behind the counter already this time, head popping up when he hears the bell ring. He beams widely when he sees Michael, bouncing on his heels.

“Hi! Vanilla rose guy!” He says brightly, waving as he does so. Michael blushes. 

“Michael. It’s Michael. Only fair since I know yours,” Michael says, embarrassed immediately. Luke smiles, dimples popping on his cheeks. 

“Nice name. Now I don’t have to call you vanilla rose guy. Ashton was starting to think I made you up just to prove my drink idea was good.” 

“All real. Just back for more coffee,” Michael says. Luke’s got his hair down today, curled around the base of his neck as he grins. He has butterfly wing eyeshadow on today, orange and blacks swirled together and drawn on. It’s so enchanting, Michael can’t take his eyes off of Luke. It’s distracted him completely from placing his order, going red when he realizes he’s been standing here for a few minutes in silence, staring at Luke. Luke giggles, tucking a curl behind his ear.

“So, coffee?”

“Yes. Coffee. The thing I am here for. What flavors do you have today?”

“Vanilla, hazelnut, mocha, raspberry, caramel, and the rose one. A few other floral flavors. Nothing too exciting.” 

“Will you combine something?” 

“Oh?”

“The mocha and the raspberry. In a small iced coffee.”

“Oh! Yes! That sounds really good actually. Why didn’t I think of that?” Luke says, grabbing a cup and spinning around to start making it. 

“I just like weird flavors is all.” 

“Not that weird. Sounds pretty good. Maybe you should work in the coffee shop, not me.” 

“Nah. They need me too much at the library. Who else is going to help stressed parents find the last copy of Frozen or show someone’s grandma how to use the computer?” Michael says. Luke laughs, pouring coffee from a pitcher into the cup. 

“Well, I’m sure you’ve saved many a tired parent whose daughter wants to hear Let It Go for the 100th time. Are you on break today?” 

“Day off. Wanted to run some errands while I’m alone, but figured coffee would be a good place to start. Library can survive without me for two days.” 

“What if someone needs the last copy of Frozen?”

“Calum can help them for a day,” Michael says. Michael likes working and living with Calum, but he likes the misalignment of their off days. Michael usually gets Friday and Saturdays off and Calum usually gets Sundays and Mondays. It gives them a few days to breathe without each other and it means that for a couple days, they get to alternate who cooks instead of them rushing to finish cooking one meal together. Michael has to go to the grocery store after this to get the ingredients for cheese quesadillas, his promised meal for the night.

“Calum?”

“Co-worker. Roommate. Pain in my ass.”

Luke giggles, shaking his head and sliding the coffee across the bar, “Well, I’m glad you get the day off, so you can come visit me and get coffee. You certainly keep my day interesting and exciting.”

“You’ve met me twice,” Michael says, taking the coffee and biting at the straw. 

“Yeah, but you have the most interesting coffee orders. Who else would think to combine chocolate and raspberry? I didn’t.”

“I’m just a librarian with terrible taste.”

“Hey, no mean talking about yourself. You have interesting and exciting taste. How’s the coffee?” Luke asks. Michael takes a sip. It’s good, rich without being overpowering, the raspberry a subtle aftertaste in it. 

“It’s good,” Michael says. Luke beams, smile lighting up his whole face with cheer.

“Good! I’m going to put it on my February drink list. It’ll be a good drink for Valentine's Day.”

Michael checks the time on his watch, frowning when he realizes how late it is, how much time he’s spent here with Luke chatting. He really needs to get to the store so he can buy food and start cooking. He was supposed to clean the apartment too today. Calum’s gonna chew him out if he doesn’t at least get something done because he’ll certainly realize Michael went to get coffee and he’ll mention Luke again.

“Do you have to go?” Luke asks, voice sad. 

“Yeah. Gotta go buy dinner and then cook it. My turn to cook for the evening. Perks of having the day off.”

“Well, thanks for coming in again. You should come back when you have more time.”

“Don’t you have to work?”

“I’m co-owner. I can take a break to talk to my favorite customer,” Luke says, resting his elbows on the counter and grinning, leaning forward just a bit. It gives Michael a good view of his collarbones where the collar of his shirt dips low. Michael swallows, mouth dry.

“I have Fridays off. Maybe I’ll come in next week.”

“Please. I’ll try to come up with a drink for you to try,” Luke says. He smiles, biting the corner of his lip as Michael walks towards the door. He walks into a table nearby, stumbling when he’s distracted by Luke and blushes as he darts out the door. God, maybe one day Michael will stop making a fool of himself in front of the cute barista.

It’s been almost a week since Michael went to the coffee shop on his day off and he’s been psyching himself up to go back. He’d gone a couple other days during the week on his lunch break again, but Luke hadn’t been there. Instead, Michael met Ashton who had raised his eyebrows and gone “Oh you’re Michael,” causing Michael to blush and avoid the coffee shop for a few days to get over his embarrassment. 

It’s Friday though and Michael can’t deny that he wants coffee. He wants coffee and he misses Luke and he wants to go in anyway. So, Michael sucks it up, puts on his best jeans and nice t-shirt and brushes his hair before going on his mission for coffee. He brings a book with him this time, promising himself that he’ll sit around and actually spend time at the store.

He gets lucky today, pushing the door open and seeing Luke behind the counter, humming along to the pop song on the radio as he dances around behind the counter. He brightens up when he sees Michael, grinning and waving, curls falling into his eyes.

“Hi Michael! It’s been a few days. Ashton mentioned you came in a couple times.”

“Yeah, I needed my coffee fix. Kept missing you though.”

“Yeah, it was a weird week for me, but I’m here now. I know it’s your day off and I couldn’t risk missing you,” Luke says, earnest. Michael blushes.

“Well, I brought my book with me, so I can hang around for a bit today,” Michael says, holding the book up.

“Lovely. I’m here all day for coffee while reading needs. What can I get you?”

“Caramel vanilla iced coffee. The larger size,” he says. Luke nods, going about making the drink.

“You must know some good books, being a librarian. You get to see all the new releases.”

“Most of them are those cheesy romance novels. So if you like reading about running away with a duke, I’m not sure what I can recommend. Unless you like horror novels.”

“I like fantasy. And mystery novels.”

“You should read A Cosmology of Monsters. It’s mystery and fantasy with a dash of horror. A good twist. I read it in one night,” Michael says. Luke hums, snapping the lid onto the cup.

“I’ll have to give it a look. What are you reading now?”

“If We Were Villains. Murder mystery novel, very who done it. But they’re theater students, so it’s an interesting read. Even though it’s very predictable.”

“Well, don’t tell me! What if I decide to read it?”

“Hey, I’m just giving you the plot summary. I just think it’s a little predictable,” Michael says, taking his coffee. Luke rolls his eyes.

“Well, take your coffee and your spoilers and go read your book. Don’t give it all away.”

“Aw, you’re no fun,” Michael says, teasing. He takes his cup, finding a table in the corner and sitting down so he’s facing Luke. Usually, Michael wears headphones and listens to music while he’s reading, but this time he doesn’t, preferring to keep them in his bag, so he can talk to Luke. It works, Luke commenting on the music playing over the coffee shop speakers or asking Michael for his opinions on muffins. Eventually, he takes his break, coming to sit across from Michael with two muffins, blueberry and chocolate, and his own cup of coffee to share with Michael. They exchange stories about their families and their jobs, until Luke has to go back to work and Michael realizes he has to head back home to finish cleaning and start on dinner. Luke looks a little sad to see Michael go, but he waves him goodbye as always, sends him off with a couple of chocolate chip cookies he’s made for Michael to take back to his place. Michael tries not to read into it too much, that the cute barista is giving him baked goods and hanging out with him and that Michael has spent a whole afternoon with Luke. He knows Calum is going to tease him when he goes home with the cookies, that he spent the whole day with Luke, to the point he’s running behind on his chores, but Michael thinks it was worth it to get to spend some more time with Luke and his curls and his laugh and his dimples. It’s always worth it to spend time with Luke and getting to see his smile.

It’s Tuesday and it’s boring. Nothing ever happens on a Tuesday. Which, sometimes is nice at the library. Yesterday, Michael had to deal with telling someone who was watching porn to get off the computers and arguing with a mom that no they didn’t have a movie in stock and no, Michael can’t go to another library to get it for her. It had taken Michael’s supervisor to step in and take over before the woman finally got it and left. Michael likes his job but god, does he hate people sometimes.

Calum’s been put on shelving today, leaving Michael alone at the front desk. He’s resisting the urge to spend the chair around in circles to combat his boredom. He could probably read a book or do something else productive, but Michael can’t get away with reading at the front some days and if he pulls his phone out, someone will probably walk by and comment on it.

Michael’s in the middle of making faces at Calum across the way when the doors to the library slide open and it pulls Michael’s attention over. He’s startled to see that it’s Luke coming through the doors, cheeks pink from the wind, and carrying a cup of coffee in his hands. He looks nice today, now that Michael can see his whole outfit. He looks nicer than he should, wearing leather trousers, heeled boots, and a leather jacket over a plain black shirt. He has no right looking this nice at a public library. Michael can’t physically take it.

Luke spots Michael, eyes lighting up and face breaking into a grin when they make eye contact. He makes a beeline for Michael. Michael looks over at Calum, frantic. Calum raises his eyebrows, mouth forming an “o” as he watches it all unfold.

“Hi. So this is your natural habit,” Luke whispers when he gets to the front desk.

“Here it is. Me and all the grandparents and small children.”

“Should I leave and come back so I can watch your heroics in action?”

“Could be awhile. Slow day today it seems like.”

“Too bad. You sold me on you being the big librarian hero.”

“Sorry to disappoint.”

“Never,” Luke says, grinning. 

“Can I help you find something today?” Michael asks, figuring he should redirect them back to the fact that Luke’s at his place of work and eventually his boss will ask if he’s goofing off.

“Actually, I wanted to bring you a treat. You keep coming by my place of work, so I wanted to come visit you. Return the favor.”

“I come to your place of work to buy coffee. My work is pretty boring.”

“All I do is make coffee. You get to help people all day and see all the kids. I’d call that exciting.”

“I wouldn’t call it that,” Michael mumbles. Luke stands there, cocking his head to the side watching Michael. It reminds Michael of a puppy dog staring at him. Michael glances at the clock on his computer, figures it’s close enough now for him to take his break and talk to Luke outside.

“Let me punch out for lunch. We can sit outside on the bench and talk,” he whispers. Luke nods, heading off to the outside to wait for him. Michael darts to the back, letting his boss know so someone else can go sit at the front. Michael makes a point to avoid looking at Calum as he leaves.

Luke’s sitting on the bench by the door, ankles crossed and coffee sitting next to him. Michael crosses over, taking a seat next to Luke, who beams when he notices Michael. 

“I was worried about coming to see you at work, but I thought it might be nice to bring you an afternoon pick me up. Mid week blues are always the worst.”

“Thanks. I need this. What’d you make me today?”

“Mocha with caramel sauce and coconut milk. I remember you ordered it last time. Thought you might like the sweet and warmth today.”

“I do. How do you know me so well?”

“Perks of being a barista. Good at reading people,” Luke teases. Michael huffs, closing his eyes as he takes a sip of the drink, humming his appreciation when he gets a taste of it.

“Good?”

“Just what I needed. The best yet.”

Luke claps in excitement, curls bouncing with him. Michael takes another sip, closing his eyes again to savor the taste.

“How much time do you have?”

“Can probably get away with 15 minutes before I should head in and actually eat my lunch.”

“Tell me how your day’s been going,” Luke says, turning to face Michael. His face is earnest and open. Michael blushes, launching into a story about trying to run the children’s reading group this morning. Michael would take any kid over their parents anyday. The parents are the kicker, always trying to one up each other to prove their kid is better. Michael gets so lost in the story, caught up in Luke’s laughter and snorting that he doesn’t realize how much time has passed until he catches sight of Calum waving at him through the door.

“Shit I gotta go. Breaks almost up,” Michael says, rushing to stand. Luke looks crestfallen and a little sad.

“Oh really? I didn’t realize how much time had passed. I’m sorry.”

“No, no it’s not your fault. I need to get better at time management. You always distract me,” Michael confesses, blushing a little at the admission. Luke blushes too, cheeks and nose a little red.

“Well good. I like being a distraction. I mean...hmmm...you know what I mean,” Luke says, blushing harder.

“I do. Thanks for the coffee. I’ll come by the shop tomorrow?”

“Yes! I’ll be there. Enjoy the coffee Michael,” Luke says, waving as Michael rushes back in. 

“Have fun with Lukey?”

“Shut up. Which of us got free coffee?” Michael says, sticking his tongue out and holding out the cup for Calum to see. Calum squints, leaning in to look at the cup.

“Oh shit,” Calum whispers, pointing at the side of the cup. Michael turns it around, eyes going wide when he notices the handwriting on the side.

“You really grind my beans. Text me- Luke,” the handwriting says, a number written out next to it.

“You have to text him,” Calum hisses.

“I cannot.”

“Do it! The cute barista came to visit you at work and gave you his number! He wants you to visit,” Calum says urgently. Michael looks at the writing, brow furrowed. It’s impossible for Luke to like Michael, but this says otherwise. Maybe Michael should take his chances and text Luke. See what happens.

(It gets him a date on Friday with the prettiest blonde barista in town. It gets him breakfast on Saturday with the same boy. It gets him a cheeky grin from Calum when he goes home Saturday night, covered in hickies. It gets him a boyfriend, who brings him coffee on his lunch breaks with silly little coffee puns. It gets Michael happiness.)

please note that I have never watched or listened to this musical, nor do I ever plan to, as I find it very offensive to me and my culture. everyone can have their own opinion, of course, and my opinion should not be considered representative of the entire Vietnamese community as a whole.

let’s start from the very beginning. the Wikipedia summary of Miss Saigon states that it tells “the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover.”

... okay. okay. first off, that’s just. that’s the basic Wikipedia summary of the musical. and, well, it. doesn’t make me particularly thrilled. It’s also stated that Miss Saigon is based off of the opera Madame Butterfly, a racist and stereotypical piece of media set in Japan (I can’t remember what time period.) this means a couple of things, but to me it kind of means that they didn’t particularly do as much research on the actual experiences of vietnamese people during the Vietnam war as much as they should have.

so the musical basically centers around Kim, a 17 year old girl who works as a prostitute in order to get by. she falls in love with an American soldier who’s name I legitimately do not remember, and falls in love. they both fall in love with each other, but then Saigon falls, America pulls their troops out, Kim is left in Vietnam with soldier-dude’s child. soldier-dude is in despair in America, gets married with another lady, later goes back to Vietnam to find Kim. upon realizing soldier-dude is married to another lady, Kim is in despair, blah blah stuff happens idk what though, and then Kim kills herself so that her son can be adopted by soldier-dude and brought to America for a better life.

... yeah. okay sure. sure, this has it’s roots in true stories and experiences. but. but really, out of everything else, they had to use this. it paints south Vietnam as a victim, and while this war is complicated, with 3 sides (north, south, and America), they barely focus on the fact that the south is fighting to save themselves, too. pretty much every viet character in the musical hates themselves for being Vietnamese (apparently they actually say in the musical that the Vietnamese “think only of rice and hates entrepreneurs”) and the goal of pretty much everyone is to leave and run to America.

oh and also one of the Viet characters calls Vietnamese people “greasy chinks” which. Uh. hello???? what???

god I hate this musical so much. how many people watched it and cried and though they were having an educational experience??? before I was born, my dad actually was attending protests against Miss Saigon, as were many of his friends.

let me just say, if the world’s largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam is protesting it... there’s probably something wrong with the musical.

ugugugjghhfh I hate it so much. and then. and then. they sold shirts with Ho Chi Minh and the communist flags on them, and really? selling that stuff as merchandise at a musical about south Vietnam and the effects of the Viet Cong.

anyways. yeah. that’s. that’s the general gist of it I guess... not to mention some of the yellowface casting and ughhhh I don’t really have the energy I need any more but god I hate. this. musical.

haha I’ll go before I say something *too* controversial... I’m just tired of everything these days and I just- this really isn’t the best representation of the Vietnamese community and hhh yeah.

woah holy shit... i didn't know miss saigon was um THAT bad holy shit. all i knew about it was that this musical made lea salonga very famous (which um yea as much as i admire lea i personally believe that vietnamese actors should be the one playing these roles because duh vietnamese story but that's just my opinion) so um wow hearing about this shocked me. from what i'm understanding from what you said, it seems that the musical has some white-savior-ish undertones? like um moving to America and leaving Vietnam the overall goal of the characters that, like you said, hate themselves for being vietnamese is rather yikes... and then selling that kind of merchandise on order to promote the musical is um very tone deaf of them fjdjdjd this was very interesting to read tho tea anon!! Thank you for educating about this and if I'm ever gonna research about Miss Saigon musical context and controversies someday then I'm definitely gonna keep these in mind!
