I have so little patience for people insisting Z/llennials are anxious because of our phones. Do you think limiting federal agencies' abilities to protect workers and consumers would be less awful if I read it in a newspaper?? Do you think pollution would be less of a problem if Walter Cronkite told me about it?? Do you think more people under 30 would have secure employment and housing if the town crier shouted the stats??
Are there online platforms that create and exacerbate extremely unhealthy social situations? Absolutely, yes! But stop acting as though people aren't intelligent enough to also identify actual problems chronically affecting their lives.

'early gen z people wanna consider themselves millennial bc they're hating on kids today' no I consider myself more of a millennial bc for like the first twenty years of my life that's what I was considered, then I was considered in a gray area between generations as a z-llennial, then was suddenly considered gen z when i share more in common with millennials
I know generations are really arbitrary and don't really mean anything, it's just people enjoying sorting things into categories but someone accused me like being anti gen z kids just for saying I relate more and would prefer to be grouped in with millennials

today in therapy i was talking about how weird it feels being a z-llennial (idk how tf to spell it sorry) while having boomer parents (literally). like my mom is 61 and my dad is 64, and i’m 23? like that’s such a big generation gap?
first of all, my parents have always been like at least a whole decade older than all of my friends’ parents, and they’re actually older than a couple of my friends’ grandparents somehow??? so interacting with my friends and talking about our parents, there was also a difference i could feel bc my parents grew up in a completely different time and environment. i still remember my freshman year of college, by roommate was telling me how her grandma was about to turn 60, and i was just like “my dad just turned 60?”
like my parents used typewriters when they were in college. i still remember all the lectures my parents gave me about how grateful i should be for the backspace key on the computer, bc “back in my day if we made a typo we had to retype the whole page.” also my dad telling me when i was a kid that our clunky desktop was actually pretty small bc when he was in college computers took up a whole room. (they couldn’t give me the “walking uphill both ways to school” talk because my brother and i also walked to school on a daily basis so.)
also, their expectations for my brother and i are based on what was expected of them and are very boomer-esque. like, they both think that my brother and i should aspire to get married and have kids and own a house and have a nice office job or smth (aka a “real” job). they’ve come a long way in accepting that my brother and i don’t want literally any of these things, but they still make a lot of offhand comments about how we should find “real jobs” or you never know, you might just change your mind about kids (bc it’s apparently different when it’s your own child. this message is brought to you by my father who told me he never wanted children until after my brother was born. yikes.)
i know there’s always going to be generational divide between parents and their children, but compared to other people my age it just seems kinda different in a lot of ways? like i don’t know anyone else my age whose parents are baby boomers. they’re all like gen x (or whatever it was that came after the boomers)
and at the same time there’s a lot of similarities bc my parents are actually fairly progressive compared to a lot of their family members and friends? like i know they got a lot of shit for waiting so long to have kids. and my parents are also fairly open-minded for their age. idk, it’s just kinda weird to think about

there’s this customer who comes in every so often to get her hair color done. if i had to guess, i would say she’s probably in her early 40s. & i remember her saying something to me once abt how when she was younger, she remembered her parents fighting constantly abt their joint bank account, and so now she and her husband jst have separate bank accounts and as a result, it’s rare for them to fight abt money.
i always think abt that conversation when i see clickbait articles abt how gen y isn’t rly into the idea of buying certain things (homes, cable, whatever). like i can’t help but figure part of the rzn why is bc they’ve been hearing their parents complain abt them for years. like my mom complains constantly abt how much upkeep the house is & my dad’s catchphrase may as well have been “300 channels but nothing to watch”... i can say w a lot of certainty that i’ve internalized these things! and i dnt see myself paying for either of those things in the future

What you know about Mi(llennials)?
In 2007 Lil Mama dropped a generational certified banger called “Lipgloss”. A song every millennial will get jiggy with, on the dance floor. But, Lil Mama asked a pressing question in the hit single, “Whatchu know ‘bout me?” For marketers trying to figure out millennials, very little. Yet, they do know the primary factors that drive millennials. They are defined by digital, financial crisis, fragmented culture, and skepticism. So, how did the generation before me end up with these defining characteristics?
Tumblr media
The millennial generation grew up in the scene of budding technological advancements. From the first Apple computer releasing five years prior to the beginning of the generation to Apple’s first phone release in 2005, this generation saw momentous strides in technology in their adolescence. They are considered digital natives because technology was greatly integrated into their lives while they grew up. Therefore, gen x and boomers are seen as digital immigrants. With being born in this technological revolution, millennials and technology essentially grew up and blossomed together. They are still on this journey together and keep growing more intelligent and wiser each year.

Furthermore, it is hard for marketers to find marketing strategies that fit millennials because of the financial crisis. In 2008, millennials ranged from post-collegiate adults to middle schoolers about to finish eighth grade. Along with accumulating more debt due to the price of tuition millennials did not have the same buying power with their salaries like previous generations. Which in turn caused economic hardship. Therefore, millennials generally are conservative investors that are risk averse. Although they usually opt out of the traditional routes they tend to be more accepting to entrepreneurial investments but essentially take on more risk with those.
Tumblr media
In addition, with the flood of content spewing out into every industry it is hard to connect a singular entity with the millennial generation. There is no one superstar, one hit television series, one blockbuster movie or even one clothing fad that has defined this generation. The non-cohesiveness of this generation makes it much more difficult for marketers to target their audience due to the fragmentations. That is why more than ever the marketing strategy of consistency throughout all platforms is key to keeping this generation engaged. The website for a good or service should mirror its social media platforms, which should align with the brand. This generation seeks consistency and if they do not think that the value of the product is consistent with the price you can expect a thumbs down. Nowadays, bad reviews don’t get logged in the answering machine, they are on display for all the internet to see. Therefore, other consumers will be influenced by others' experiences which affect what they will do with their disposable income.
Lastly, millennials are a tough group to get through to because of their skepticism. They do not trust big corporations. Instead they turn to their peers for reviews and experiences. Millennials can gather information from many sources with the internet in the palm of their hands. So, brands have to be transparent when they are dealing with consumers. Time and time again businesses have been dragged by the news, but now millions upon millions of people can add their two cents in as well. Authenticity is highly valuable to millennials but is something marketers struggle with. We are no longer in a world where you can fake it until you make it.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, the millennial generation is still a mysterious code every marketer is trying to crack. With digital dependency, segmentations, financial speculation, and skepticism this generation is not categorized into a one size fits all. What I would recommend to marketers are three things: use relevant data, create consistent content, and build brand trust.  Millennials will not automatically become a ride or die consumer for your brand, but I believe if companies take steps into creating a trustworthy relationship with these clients, marketing towards the millennial audience will become easier. Millennials are the first digitally aged consumers, so if marketers can better understand their behaviors they might struggle less with marketing to the next digitally born generations.

The term 'millennial' has become so controversial that an expert says many millennials actually don't identify with it Not all millennials identify as millennials. That’s according to Jason Dorsey, a consultant, researcher of millennials, and president of the Centre for Generational Kinetics. He told Business Insider there are two types of millennials: me-llennials, who feel… #babyboomersaustralia
