Pairing : Tom riddle x fem!reader

Synopsis : you and Tom are academic rivals and hate each other , but is it your fault when that competitive asshole cannot handle one loss and seeks for revenge which leaves you in detention

Note : my first ever Harry potter fic sksksk , I'm very excited for this one . This is also my first fic after like a year ? And I've improved a lot so I hope you guys like it <33

In the hallowed halls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where the echoes of centuries-old spells mingle with the whispers of ambitious young wizards, I stormed down the corridor, my footsteps echoing with determination. Clutched tightly in ny hand was the parchment that bore the results of the latest Defense Against the Dark Arts examination—a subject I prided myself on excelling in , but surprisingly this time I didn't get the highest grade , though i already have an idea who got excellent score - that asshole .

As I rounded the corner, my path intersected with none other than Tom Riddle , the brooding Slytherin prodigy whose mere presence seemed to cast a shadow over my ambitions. His dark eyes flickered with a smugness that ignited a spark of anger within me , knowing all too well that he had likely aced the exam and overstepped me .

"You're in the damn way, Riddle," i spat, my voice laced with disdain as i attempted to sidestep him. But Tom, ever the opportunist, blocked my path with a sly smirk playing on his lips. "Ah, (L/N), always using such unladylike words , maybe thats one of the reason why you seem to be below than me ," he taunted, his voice dripping with condescension.

Suppressing the urge to roll my eyes, I clenched my jaw, refusing to let him see how much his words affected me . "Unlike some , I actually don't care what people say and while we talk about my academic pursuits , it'd be better if you keep your insignificant opinion to yourself ," i retorted, my tone laced with venom. Our rivalry was legendary within the walls of Hogwarts, a constant clash of intellects and egos that fueled their disdain for one another.

With a sarcastic smile, I pushed past Tom, my resolve steeling against the inevitable confrontation that awaited the both of us in the days to come. For as long as we remained academic rivals, our mutual hatred would burn as brightly as the flames of Gryffindor and Slytherin.

Tom's voice echoed in the long and ominous hallway making me stop at my tracks . "Maybe you should work on yourself instead of just trying to prove your worth , which I may insist would be nothing less than my broom" That arrogant jerk . Thankfully there were almost no students around since it was time for another lesson . I could feel my rage burning , running through my veins as i stormed towards him and grabbed him by the collar of his stupidly perfect robe "You better learn to shut your fucking mouth riddle , I'm no patient woman and I would definitely not hesitate to show you just how much I have in myself , I'll have you fucking grovel at my feet" i seethed but it did not have much impact on Tom since all he did was let out a menacing chuckle "grovel at your feet ? You sure think highly of yourself , don't you ? And why are you mad , I was just being veracious . Perhaps you forgot I'm a prefect and could very happily take points from your pathetic house for the absolute insolence you are performing at the moment"

His word flowed through his thick British accent only making me more mad , they always seemed to cut through my mind and heart , his erudite personality provoking a desire withing me to just stab him with a dagger but I know better than to do foolish things so instead i let my grip loosen as I gave him a sickeningly fake smile , my hands straightening his collar as i whispered "you wouldn't dare riddle , you know I'm a prefect aswell" i continued with sweetness flowing through my words as if it was straight up sugar "I wouldn't mind deducting all of those points you earned in a month , I'll make sure they're gone in a fucking week , you know Dumbledore is on my side" i taunted him as i tightened his tie a bit to which he hissed and glared at me .

It was a known fact that tom was loved by the entire student body along with the professors but Dumbledore? No . he sure saw right through his facade something which I highly appreciate since I find it stupid just how naive people here are that they are fooled by his fake act but to be fair he is quite charmistic with his ways of getting things done in his manner , he just fabricates his personality so fucking well . Oh how I would love to disrupt and absolutely wreck his living . His fame , his knowledge, his charm , his everything , just him overall evokes an enmity within me , an deep seated anger upon how he could gain it all so easily while I work my ass off ? It was just not fair .

I took my hands off as i beamed at him my eyes forming into crescents "farewell riddle , hope you collide into a wall and have a concussion" with that i turned around smiling to myself as i felt a sense complacency wash over me , oh such a beautiful feeling to put him in his place , I'm going to have a good sleep tonight .

As she went away Tom stood there with a clenched jaw and hands formed into fists breathing heavily "that disdainful bitch" . The amount of anger he felt was indescribable at the moment , how could this little girl disrespect him , the future lord of the wizarding world , and go away as if nothing happened? She needs to learn her place and Tom will gladly be the one to do so . "Just you wait little girl , just you wait" he breathed out as he walked away sharply .

It was now the next morning , I woke up along with hermione as we both freshened up and went at the great hall for breakfast . As we reached there we spotted our usual group - Harry , ron , fred and george . They are all laughing as we took our seats , I sat near Harry as hermione sat near ron . As they started bickering i side eyed Harry as we both quietly exchanged amused glances . To be honest everyone knew they liked each except those two idiots, sometimes I think they know it aswell but they just don't have enough courage to express it . It's honestly so annoying but we still do our best to make them realise their feelings .

I laughed as I heard Harry huff out "here comes the daily fighting , can a guy not have a break" I took a plate as I filled it with some food and continued the conversation "hey a girl needs a break aswell , I'm sure he doens't complain about mionie as much as she eats my ear off about ron" . Harry was about to say something when he suddenly stopped , his mouth open , eyebrows frowned into confusion as he looked somewhere. "What ? What happened?" I asked as I followed his gaze which stopped at the Slytherin table right where tom sat with his insatiable group of arrogant jerks "oh" was all i could say . Harry turned towards me as he asked "did you and Tom have another fight ? He seems to glaring at you since you entered . At first i thought it was just me but umm he's definitely mad"

All my friends knew about our rivalry since I'm mostly pissed off because of him and well let me inform you about an annoying trait of mine - I can't control my anger and cursing . I sighed as i continued eating answering him nonchalanly "I did but he started it , it was just the same I don't know what hit the nerve this time" Harry seemed a bit concerned as he leaned in a bit "just be careful I think he's coming for you this time , it seems as if you really hurt his pride" I let out a chuckle as I looked at tom "oh he can try all he wants but at the end he is the loser" i whispered as i smiled sarcastically at tom who only glared back .

We had finished eating as we stood up , ron and hermione still arguing "gosh ronald you make such gratuitous jokes" hermione complained as they walked forward , me and Harry still walking at a slow pace behind as we continued laughing . Suddenly Tom blocked our path with his annoying friends "well if it isn't the golden pair of our school , i must say you both suit each other perfectly , extremely dumb and pretentious" said his younger brother, mattheo . He is a spitting image of Tom just less cold and more talkative , also a complete manwhore - quite the opposite of Tom . I scoffed as I rolled my eyes "did the snakes loose their way ? You're slithering in the wrong den assholes"

"How amiable , aren't you darling" mattheo said as he stepped forward , a bit too much in my personal space for my liking . Before I can say something Tom interrupted "don't waste your time on trash Mattheo , we have better things to do" his sentence made me furious but i kept a cool face on "oh yeah , like licking snapes boot off for extra points?" My words sure made them offended as they all stepped forward but Harry came in between "if you guys may , we're getting late for class" with that he dragged me away as I flipped Tom off , oh how I loved seeing their pissed off face as I blew them a kiss only adding fuel to their rage .

During the classes i could feel their burning gaze throwing daggers at my head . They were extremely influencial people maybe i shouldn't have said too much but I'm a gryffindor , it's in my blood . Damn this courage , this will be the reason of my death one day . This is all Tom's fault , he is simply so agitating ugh will be just let me live my life in any sort of peace ? If he's not at my neck all the time then his goons are , so fucking annoying. The classroom fell quite as the professor stepped in with the results of the transfiguration test taken a week ago .

As the professor stood at the front of the classroom, holding the parchment with the test results, the tension in the air was palpable. Every student leaned forward in their seats, anticipation coursing through the room like electricity.

When the professor finally began to announce the results, a hush fell over the classroom, broken only by the rustling of parchment. As my name was called out as the top performer, a ripple of whispers and murmurs swept through the room, followed by a round of applause.

You couldn't help but feel a swell of pride at the recognition of your hard work and dedication. It was a validation of your efforts, a moment of triumph amidst the daily struggles of academic life at Hogwarts.

But as you basked in the glow of your success, you couldn't ignore the sharp gaze of Tom Riddle fixed upon you from across the room. His expression was inscrutable, but there was a glint of something dangerous in his eyes.

It was no secret that Tom Riddle was ambitious and competitive, always striving to be the best in every endeavor. Your success was undoubtedly a blow to his pride, and you could see the flicker of envy in his demeanor.

As the class continued, you couldn't shake the feeling of being under scrutiny, as if every move you made was being watched and analyzed. It was as though Tom's gaze followed you wherever you went, a constant reminder of the rivalry that simmered between you.

But despite the undercurrent of tension, you refused to let it dampen your spirits. You were determined to savor this moment of victory, to revel in the praise that had been bestowed upon you.

As Tom Riddle seethed with jealousy over the your academic success , he knew he needed to devise a plan to bring you down. His mind teemed with thoughts of retribution, each one darker than the last.

One evening, as he strolled through the corridors of Hogwarts, an idea struck him like a bolt of lightning. He would orchestrate a situation that would land you in detention, a punishment that would serve as a fitting punishment for their perceived transgressions. It would piss you off but also lower your reputation in front of the professors.

Tom approached his brother, Mattheo, and his friend, Theodore, with a devious plan brewing in his mind. "I need your help," he said, his eyes glinting with malice. "I want to teach that insolent girl a lesson she won't forget."

Mattheo and Theodore exchanged a glance, intrigued by Tom's proposition already knowing who he's talking about . "What do you have in mind?" Mattheo asked, his curiosity piqued.

Tom outlined his plan, explaining how he intended to use Mattheo and Theodore to manipulate your emotions. "We'll have you bump into her and flirt with her," he said with a wicked grin. "But we'll make sure to push her buttons. She won't be able to resist reacting , you know how she is ."

Theodore nodded , eager to assist his friend. "Count me in," he declared, his eyes gleaming with mischief.

As i navigated the bustling corridors of Hogwarts, lost in thought, i suddenly felt a collision jolt my from my reverie. Startled, i stumbled backward, nearly losing my balance. Looking up, I saw two figures looming over me , their expressions smug and unapologetic.

"Watch where you're going!" I exclaimed, my annoyance evident in my voice as I straightened myself.

Mattheo and Theodore exchanged a glance, barely concealing their amusement. "Apologies, love," Mattheo said with a smirk, his tone dripping with insincerity. "We didn't see you there."

I rolled her eyes, my irritation mounting at their cavalier attitude. "Sure you didn't," I muttered sarcastically, attempting to sidestep their path and continue on my way.

But Mattheo stepped in front of me , blocking my path with an infuriating grin. "Leaving so soon, sweetheart?" he teased, his tone laced with arrogance.

My patience wore thin as I tried to push past him, my frustration evident in my voice. "I have better things to do than entertain you two," i retorted, my annoyance palpable.

However, Mattheo and Theodore seemed undeterred by my dismissal, their egos bruised by my indifference. They exchanged a knowing glance before Theodore leaned in closer, his voice dripping with false charm. "Come on, don't be like that," he cajoled, reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair from my face.

I recoiled, my patience wearing thin. "Don't touch me," I snapped, swatting his hand away. "I said I'm not interested!"

But Mattheo and Theodore persisted, their egos wounded by my rejection. They exchanged a smirk before Theodore remarked, "Looks like she needs to be taught a lesson, eh, Mattheo?"

With a malicious glint in his eye, Mattheo nodded in agreement. "Oh, I've got just the lesson in mind," he replied, his voice filled with venomous intent as he stepped closer .

And with that, my patience snapped. With a swift punch to Mattheo's jaw, I silenced his arrogant words , I couldn't believe how absolutely disgusting they were.

The commotion attracted the attention of nearby teachers, who hurried over to intervene. Amidst the chaos, I found myself dragged to detention , the teacher's had asked what happened and with the witness of other students around it was proved that I started the fight. I was absolutely furious because I had a reason to do it but I was silenced by "I am utterly disappointed in you (name) I didn't expect this kind of behaviour from you. Detention for 3 days". My mind was reeling with anger - they hadn't even let me explain myself , just great .

As i stormed into the dimly lit detention room, my eyes immediately locked onto Tom Riddle's figure, sitting calmly at his desk. Without hesitation, i marched over to him, my footsteps echoing with determination.

"What did you do?" I demanded, my voice cutting through the silence of the room. Tom glanced up, his expression unreadable as he met my gaze. "I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about," he replied smoothly, his tone betraying no hint of guilt.

My frustration boiled over, my patience wearing thin. "Cut the act, Tom," i snapped, my voice tinged with anger. "You framed me, didn't you?"

A smirk tugged at the corner of Tom's lips, a glint of amusement dancing in his dark eyes. "Perhaps I did," he admitted casually, his gaze never wavering from mine . "But you shouldn't be so careless, (L/N) . You know what they say about stepping on snakes."

The mention of snakes ignited a fire within me , my temper flaring at his veiled threat. Without thinking, I lunged forward, my hand reaching out to grab him by the collar.

"You think you can intimidate me?" I hissed, my voice laced with fury as I pulled him closer. "I won't let you get away with this."

Tom's smirk widened into a sly grin as he met my gaze head-on, unfazed by my display of aggression. "And what do you plan to do about it?" he taunted, his voice dripping with malice.

Before I could respond, the sound of footsteps echoed through the room as the detention supervisor approached, breaking the tension between us . With a final glare, I released my grip on Tom's collar, stepping back to compose myself.

I huffed as I took my seat glaring at the back of his head while he talked smoothly with the professor keeping up with his facade , showing no remorse after framing me and worse threatening me to do more just because i overstepped him in a bloody test . A frustrated sigh left my mouth as he left with a mocking sly grin on his face and all I could do was roll my eyes and curse him "that asshole" .

Honestly I have to say I think the most attractive quality Darcy has is his loyalty. Like I know his friends say that's one of his best qualities as well and they always mention his loyalty to Bingley but you can clearly see his loyalty to Elizabeth early on too. Even when he's trying to repress how strongly he feels for her and he's simply "admiring her" like when she visits Jane at Bingley's. Caroline constantly puts her down and tries to make her look bad to Darcy. Liz arrives after walking 3 miles and Caroline is like ew Darcy do you see how sweaty and dirty and nasty she is? They see her taking her walks and she's sarcastically like do you think any painter could do her eyes justice lol. Does my man take the bait HELL NO ABSOLUTELY NOT he's like actually the exercise gives her a great complexion and makes her eyes look great, I actually think a painter could do an amazing job getting her eyelashes right and the way they look in the sun. Happy New Year, my friends!

I spent 2 weeks back home with my family. Xmas was very small and our holiday meal was humble yet enjoyable. It wasn’t until later when my extended family showed up that it really stirred up some drama. To put simply, things got too heated in the end and we won’t be seeing them anymore. Next year, Xmas will be just me, my bro and my parents, which honestly sounds great. 2022, I suppose like 2021, will be spent making the most of what we have and appreciating it.

I rolled up the cooking sleeves this Xmas... Made eggnog, spiked cheesecake, egg coffee, pumpkin cookies... Became a wine enthusiast lol. I know, it’s about time eh. If there’s any time I’ve ever felt so 30 years old... it’s right now.

My bro was introduced to Xenoblade 2 since I was still finishing it up over vacation. Like with most things, he did a 1-week speed-run of the game while we were still together and nearly caught up to me (which is pretty much the end). Just hours before we had to part ways, I loaded up my file and decided to beat the game so he could see the ending. On New Year’s Eve! You better believe I started Torna on Jan 1st. Starting the 2022 off right, folks...

When I think about last year, I realize I was put to the test in many ways and came out better for it. Learned some things about myself, made some embarrassing choices. Broke some friendships, gained some. It really is just about doing the things that you feel will improve your life and letting people go if they’re not meant for you. I try not to worry too much about my choices. I’m gonna be okay and they’re gonna be okay.

No NY resolutions this year, it’s the circumstances’ turn to change.

Nerd Stuff

My roommate and I finally beat Xillia 2 when we got back from our respective vacations. Wow it was something. From gameplay to plot to mechanics, that was the weirdest Tales game ever. Not my most loved game, but I had a good time. We’re trying to make it through the Ex dungeon and boy, do I feel TESTED.

Not that this is anything new, but I am in the mood for retro anime (which is all the time, but I feel it especially strong nowadays). I feel terribly indifferent to current shows so I’ll be taking a journey to explore 80s anime OVAs. The animation quality, copious amounts of sci-fi, and art styles intrigue me. Recs appreciated!

Last but not least, I will account my greatest achievement of 2021: getting my friends into Lupin III. The sweet, sweet feeling of finally being united in one fandom again after years of us never being aligned!

We tried out this video sharing site called kosmi and it works pretty well for us. You can decorate your lobby with... stuff LOL.

Monsta X Concert Review

On Saturday 8/3/19, I went to the MONSTA X <WE ARE HERE> show at the Hulu Theater in NYC. After such a great concert last year, I was more than happy for my second Kpop concert to be at Monsta X’s next world tour. The fact that it was in NY instead of NJ made it even easier for me to attend. Plus, my brother joined me for this concert so it was nice to go to a Kpop event with someone. This year’s experience was a bit different from last year’s, but one thing that stayed consistent is that Monsta X put on a good show. 

There’s a lot to discuss, so I’ve broken down the concert experience into parts.

Pre-Concert

Tickets

As I mentioned in a previous post, getting a ticket took more work this year. There seems to have been a technical problem with the Powerhouse website but I was still able to get decent tickets. I think I was technically closer to the stage than I was last year, but I was more to the left of it so I wasn’t able to watch Monsta X from the center like last time. Nevertheless, I was in the front row of my section, so I was able to see and enjoy everything fairly well.

Venue

Although it was easier to get to this venue, it was nowhere near as nice as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. For a place as famous as Madison Square Garden, the Hulu Theater is very basic with not much aesthetic at all—mostly just grey walls filled with (granted, comfy) seats. That’s not a big deal though since that aspect of the venue doesn’t really matter. But what does matter is the fact that the acoustics were lacking so the sound quality for this concert wasn’t as good as the rich, surround-sound-like experience of the NJPAC. It’s a shame that the venue had an unfortunate effect on the concert but oh well :/

Crowd

There was obviously a high percentage of young females but there seems to have been slightly more guys than before. There were very few older people attending this show and few Asian people in general, but I think the group was still diverse. The crowd waited patiently outside in the setting sun, and it was really nice to see two concertgoers dressed in Ongshimi Minhyuk outfits! The general check-in process was very organized but there was, understandably, much more security (metal detectors, bag x-rays and K-9 dogs) since this is NYC. Either way, everyone was seated and ready to go in no time thanks to all the helpful staff.

CONCERT

Although the concert was originally advertised to be at 8 PM, I found out only a few days earlier that it would actually be at 7 PM. But I guess most people got the memo because the place was pretty much full before the show started. There were some “false alarms” because a few things happened before everything officially began (e.g. the lights dimmed, a screen for the tour popped up and an Mnet ad appeared twice), but the show did start at approximately 7:10 PM. 

Stage/Audio/Visual

The main stage wasn’t that big and it was only one level, but there were multiple big screens that displayed things from different angles and used different effects. The screens enhanced the overall concert experience since I could watch close ups on side screens and also enjoy background visuals on the main screen. Like I said, the audio was not very good and sounded a bit low for some reason. It also seemed like the audio was only coming from the stage area instead of sound filling up the entire theater. Either way, the lighting was good and there were points during performances where stage lights changed colors, steam blew from the stage and confetti rained over part of the audience.

Videos

The show started with a really cool opening video that introduced the group/members. The other concert videos were also good and I actually think that this year’s video content was better than last year’s. Instead of a Monsta X party, they had “MonTube” that showed each member doing funny YouTube-style video clips that related to their personalities and interests. The other videos showed more scenes and details from the Alligator/Shoot Out era and they did a good job explaining the whole 7 Deadly Sins concept that they’ve pretty much had since their Beautiful era. Although I definitely enjoyed the videos for The Connect Tour, I still don’t quite know what they were really about. So Monsta X did a much better job at making their videos entertaining yet understandable this year. 

Talks

Monsta X talked throughout the concert in both English and Korean (with a translator), but they made a clear effort to speak more English this time. Although some members still struggle with English, you could hear how much other members improved (Kihyun’s English is now the second best in the group!) and most were able to speak more comfortably than last year. The most surprising part of the talks was when each member gave a little speech entirely in English at the end of the show. I honestly think they should’ve just let Shownu and Wonho speak Korean since it was so difficult for them to express themselves in a different language, but I appreciate the effort and I think their English will continue to improve with time.

Songs/Performances

Monsta X performed about 20 songs, plus they had special group acts and solos. There were more props for this concert which was a nice touch to their performances. As usual, everyone sounded good and the dancing was on point. I think their wardrobe was better than last year’s and their black and gold outfits were my favorite. They sang about half of the songs from each of their latest albums, some songs from The Connect mini album, but few (or even no) songs from the rest of their discography. I guess Monsta X is reaching a point in their career where their song collection has gotten so big that many great songs can’t be in their concerts simply due to time constraints. And the fact that they released two full length albums back-to-back made it even less likely that most of their older songs would be performed. Nevertheless, some of the missing songs were featured in the bgm of their videos and overall Monsta X picked a solid set list that included different styles, energies and moods for the concert.

I’m not a fan of the remix versions of Monsta X songs, but the 8-bit video screen for I’M’s part in Hero was really nice. They sang less title tracks but the new choreography for their non-title tracks was good (especially for Oh My). Minhyuk and Jooheon sang the Ongshimi chorus during one of the talks and it was funny when Jooheon sang and Wonho rapped another member’s part while performing. I was surprised that many of my favorite songs weren’t in the concert, but it was good seeing less/non-promoted songs live. The solo performances were a real treat since I enjoyed Jooheon's drum solo and Hyungwon’s DJ stage was one of the best parts of the show. 

Conclusion

Overall, it was great to see Monsta X again. Unlike last year, I had to stand up most of the time so I could see, but thankfully I didn’t lose my voice or get dehydrated because I learned my lesson from my first concert :P. There was actually more humor in this show than last year so it was fun to enjoy music and laugh throughout the evening. I hope everyone had a wonderful time, and I’m glad that the rest of the world tour was a success. Monsta X, fighting!

7 Deadly Sins Movie 

This was a very interesting video because it clearly showed which sin each member was portraying: wrath (Shownu), sloth (Wonho), agony (Minhyuk), loneliness (Kihyun), pride (Hyungwon), greed (Jooheon), and envy (I.M.). Even though I already knew/figured out most of this already, the reason why I wasn’t sure about some of them is because they replaced lust and gluttony with agony and loneliness, which are more emotions than actual sins. 

It’s nice that the video officially clarified all this because I thought Minhyuk was lust since many of his scenes in MVs had roses in them and Kihyun was gluttony since all the formula-filled images related to him made it seem that he was a glutton for knowledge or something (or maybe Wonho was gluttony because he ate an apple in an MV?). Either way, their concept makes more sense now :)

Putting together a new sound is always a bit difficult. As an artist being "just being yourself" or doing what you are used to is an impossibility and an unsustainable thing because you are always trying to challenge yourself creatively. Rather it amounts to having a vision and sticking to it. You are now on your fifth record, how did that having a creative vision and sticking to it amount to what it is?

I think the answer to that is that "yourself" is an evolving ever-changing thing. So unless you stay the same it's hard to keep doing the same thing. For me, in particular, the past couple years have changed me in many ways, and to just keep doing what I've always done didn't feel like an option. How can you go through massive change without it soaking into the art you're doing? 

For me, that was a question I asked myself. And I guess, seeing how my life has changed in the past, I give myself the freedom to change again in the future. That doesn't mean that I'm a different type of animal now. I'm the same species, but having learned what I've learned, I have a different perspective now (-:

Your international debut was released on a major label but you've since been releasing music independently. What is it about having your own creative vision and also the difficulties of releasing music independently? I know your previous “Earth Sick” was done through crowdfunding. What's it like to know that you have a record that is entirely funded by your backers? That was a very cool project, but also hard work. I think every project that is done independently is a lot of work, but rewarding when you succeed with your goal. I'm thankful for every opportunity I've had of releasing music, both on major, through crowdfunding and on my own indie label. And mostly, thankful to have listeners who care! 

It's a bit surprising to see how you've moved on from your electronic pop roots to something more classical. I remember you saying how you once hated classical music because of its rigidity; the fact it was bound by definition. Why did you end up creating something that was more classical in nature and how did you turn the rigid structure of classical music into something that was yours. I guess my perspective has turned, perhaps, or I've found a way to "hack" classical music now. Cause I actually see the liberty more than the restrictions. There are no compositional rules of A, B, A, B like in a pop song. It doesn't have to be 3 minutes and it can be more abstract and textural. I think the short answer is that I love music - all music! And I like to expand my musical language

The title of your album is called "Family Tree". I suppose that having a more classical album is a way of honoring your roots in the family tree. You come from a creative family of musicians and explorers. You grew up as a ballet dancer and now a musician, was a creative career path in your blood would you say?

I've never imagined doing anything that wasn't creative. I just haven't seen it as an option. Only because I've always felt that I've seen things from an odd angle, which has given me problems sometimes-- learning things and understanding the world in a more structured and traditional way. Music and art have been something I've understood. A natural language to me. There were no other options. 

A lot of the album has been written about what has happened in the last few years, but first the return to Denmark. On your album "Earth Sick", your track "Sleepy Town" talks about the move from small-town Denmark and dreams of city lights. How has that changed moving back? Denmark is a very safe and very privileged part of the world to live in. People don't struggle the same way they do in many other parts of the world. It's easy to become a little too content. It's very important for me to travel the world and never get stuck. Cabin fever can be a thing in Denmark.

The record touches on many deeply personal and tragic events in your personal life. Has it been a cathartic feeling to sing about such difficult moments?  

I have no choice. My inability to "talk it out" when I'm troubled leaves this huge desire to express my feelings otherwise and that has, for me, become music. 

A lot of your artistic career has been being no longer being afraid to step out into the light, this speaking post-injury. What is it about being persistent, not being afraid of failure and having a particular honesty and openness that has been crucial to the vision of Oh Land? I think the experience of failure I have experienced on many levels. Being an injured "retired" ballerina at the age of 19, then redefining a goal. Going through a divorce. All of those things - you survive; surviving "failures" improves stamina. builds emotional muscle. I'm unafraid.

Your music has always been bright and cheery, but with dark undertones. In a way, it's a contrast between the light and the dark which you have previously mentioned. Tell us about your work with Greenpeace and World Wildlife Fund, you grew up being fascinated by animals and you've even had your wedding at a zoo. Also as a person with a platform, why should we advocate for the environment and what do you think we can do to help? I wish I could do more is my initial thought reading this. I try to follow people like Greta Thunberg who inspires young people around the planet to act for the climate. But really, the best thing you can do is be very considerate where you put your vote. Vote green!

I know there's been a lot of heavier questions and we know you call your beloved fans narwhals, but what can you tell them about your animal friends, your rabbit in particular and the majesty of the Gobi desert, slow loris and the infamous sloth?

3 Truths about Setting Goals as a Happy Go Lucky Person

I was never the Type A kind of person who had their whole lives planned out for themselves; the ones who wrote their step-by-step plans to either go to a prestigious college; or to start up their own business; or become a full time volunteer and activist, advocating their beliefs and proactively changing the world. I never had that heavy kind of calling.

Being drawn to art at a young age, then forced to study a course in college that was deemed more "practical" than Fine Arts; my parents probably thought I had to take that choice because I seemed "lost" and "needed guidance". Ever since then, I let go of big decision making, and just let things flow. (Spoiler alert, that's when my depression unconsciously started)

Fast forward to years later, working at a career while daily questioning my purpose in life and resenting over and over why was I in this current situation--it seems like I've had enough. Seriously.

I tried therapy, and one of the few assignments that my therapist had given me was to list down some goals that I wanted to achieve one, five and ten years from now. And that scared the hell out of me. I'm already having a hard time thinking about what food I'll have the next day, what more my goals in the next ten years?!

By this time, its plain obvious that I let the wind take me where it wants to go. I never decided to interfere with it because I didn't like disappointments.

Here are a few things that I learned about setting goals as a happy go lucky person:

1. Setting goals does not equate to writing the end goal, but setting the steps to get there as well.

I remember writing down one goal of starting a plant business. And I started without much of a thought, purchased lots of plants, posted on Instagram, told myself that I'd only start selling when I get 500 followers (which never materialized probably thanks to the algorithm), then gave up when I realized that I wasn't getting anywhere near that number, eventually gave up, and is now stuck with pest infested plants that's hard to get rid of.

Being the non-planner type of person that I was, I failed to equate the extra effort it takes to actually manage a business. Especially when you have no background in it. I didn't take in the length of time it would take to gain followers, the number of daily postings, the truth about algorithms, and the lost money that I invested out of my whim dream. I only thought of the end goal, and not the amoutn of work that it took to get there.

2. Habit building (a.k.a. Discipline and consistency) is needed.

I easily give up when I think that I'm not good on the first try of something new and creative. I ventured into the art world ages ago, and thought about becoming a great and famous Instagram artist by drawing anime scenes or whatever fancies ny eyes. Just because I got a few followers, I did not bother to study and improve my art style. I got lazy, and instead of practicing everyday, I relied heavily on what other people would like to see. I felt that my art was dull, repetitive.

In order to achieve something, starting with tiny habits such as sketching for 10 minutes would be better than not sketching for weeks. Or maybe if I wanted to get better at cardio, I can do 10 minute walks every day, instead of a full 30 minute run in one day.

3. I have the power to change my course, where I want, and when I want.

As someone who has low self esteem, I let the wind take me where it wants me to be. And now I'm at a job that I really don't pour my entire self in, always questioning and thinking about doing anything else other than that; all because it pays me and feeds me well.

I'm not powerless as I think I am, and being an adult, I can redirect myself into a life that I genuinely look forward to living in everyday. And while society thinks that at certain ages you have to achieve this and that, I still have the power to try and reinvent myself (all in good ways of course).

While it takes a lot of practice, the results, regardless of whether I achieve my goals or not, will eventually pay off.

alright, well today was actually pretty good, though the beginning wasn’t great because despite saying last night that I always regret sleeping instead of going to church, once again my desire to sleep won out over my want to go to church, so I just slept for a while longer and eventually got up and got ready for the date under the premise that I had just come back from church because that’s the circumstances we planned under. So I get ready and walk over to the restaurant, he’s looking for a parking space so I wait a few minutes and then he shows up and we go inside. this is the place we got lunch at yesterday which has a bunch of old arcade games and stuff but it’s also a sports bar, and of course today is Sunday which means football, and I had not put it together that it might be packed with screaming football fans. initially they were like uhh idk if we have any open tables but then they found one over by their second door which I was like oh uh that could get cold but apparently it’s an emergency exit so we didn’t have to deal with people coming in and out and letting cold air in (and it was like, 50 today, so that’s a vast improvement over how it’s been). we got cheese curds for an appetizer of course and I got the pancakes I was eyeing yesterday but didn’t want to do bread-like breakfast overload. they get the food out pretty quickly and we start talking. he’s a nice guy, the big draw here is that he is also a Christian and like, a going to church every week one not just using the label as a sure whatever. he was definitely raised in a super conservative Christian environment but I mean so was I and he said he’s been increasingly swinging towards being liberal with all of the bullshit going on in the conservative party, so that was encouraging at least (he did vote for Trump which I was like UGH about but he said he really regrets it so I guess I can let that pass). We did talk about more stuff other than religious and political views, it was just something I wanted to clear because like my contempt for Christians who are defending our current administration’s actions is so massive that it would honestly absolutely be a dealbreaker for me, so it was good to get that out of the way at least. and we talked about some child welfare stuff (or, mostly I ranted about it and why it pisses me off when people talk about tax cuts when they have no fucking clue what these innocent children are going through thanks to what is often an underfunded government) which I mean is like normal first date material at this point for me 😂 I’m not very good at keeping my passions to myself in stuff like this. He still goes to his parent’s church and he wasn’t really crazy about it, said the pastor could get a bit fire and brimstone-y and that their congregation had been dwindling in size (as many have) especially with young people (as many have). so I told him a bit about my church and what I think are the reasons so many millennials are drawn to it to the point where our “young adults” small group category is at like, a few hundred people at this point lol, so that’s had to become a whole program unto itself. he is definitely a (self-professed) nerd but we didn’t get into anything really superhero/comics related other than me talking about future con plans and who I may be meeting. There was a very smooth feel to it all, I still get the little jittery feeling when I’m with like people I don’t really know yet that like makes me want to limit the encounter but I’m generally able to push through it and I knew this was a good interaction and there hadn’t really been anything to throw me off up to this point, which is more than I can say for most of the other boys I’ve gone on dates with. looks wise he’s not bad, I’m sure I could get accustomed to him. so yeah, it was good. he paid, I offered to split it of course but he said it was fine so I accepted that and said thank you. after we paid the check we wandered around their arcade section for a little bit and tried out some of the free machines. there was a WWE one which I somehow managed to beat him at twice, which is odd because normally when it comes to video games I’m yet to master the art of walking and controlling where you’re looking at the same time, which kinda limits most of the things you can do, lol. then we did tetris which I was laughably bad at because I hadn’t played it in years and kept pressing the wrong button. but yeah, it was fun. we left off on a positive note, he of course had to drive all the way back to Wisconsin, he was like “yeah I haven’t really been down to Chicago since like middle school” which I thought was kinda crazy lol. but yeah, it was good, and I think there can be something there. I’m telling myself/hoping I’m not just saying that because he’s the first Christian option to come around in a while, but I do think there’s a legit connection there at least. so we’ll see what happens with that, I’m not in any rush at this point. After seeing him off to his car I walked back to my apartment and set myself to work labeling and wrapping the rest of the caramels, working with the chocolate covered ones now which are tricky because the chocolate is semi-ganache like because I used some heavy cream to thin it out and make dipping easier, so it’s easily prone to melting outside the fridge. but yeah I did that a bit, tomorrow I’ll probably split them up along with the Christmas cookies for the people I promised I would send them to (I ended up with a list of 8, which is good because I probably have like 300 caramels at this point lol). once I was done with that I made a quick dinner and set to watching the last few minutes of the great American baking show episode I left off on the other day, then back to netflix to continue on the great British baking show season I’ve been watching. I ended up almost being at the end of that one, I think I have two episodes left on that one. it’s been pretty good so far, in one of the episodes I watched tonight one of the like, really attractive young guys who’s a law student ffs managed to (TW for blood) cut his finger and not really pay attention to it and when he was kneading his dough it ended up like stretching the cut out and then his hand was like, covered in blood and it was a real HOLY SHIT moment so he of course had to leave to get that all sorted out and they didn’t end up sending anyone home that week (which they do semi-regularly, they just send two people home the next week). Yeah, so I watched that for a bit before starting to get ready for bed and now I’m here. I’m trying to come up with a list of things I want to do tomorrow, I need to do laundry for sure before I leave for NY on Thursday or I won’t have any clean clothes, I need to make it to a store of some sort to get milk so I can make cornbread (because Jess is craving it) and probably shipping materials for the Christmas goodies packages. and maybe (hopefully) look at some job applications and see if there are any worth applying to. so yeah, should be doable. And I get that’s it for now. Sleep seems like a good idea. Goodnight dears. Hope your Monday doesn’t suck.

So in a way it's lowering the stakes and it's not as scary anymore. Like you said youve been writing every day for only 2 weeks and you already see an improvement. Tell me, does it really matter if you made a masterpiece during those 2 weeks? Or does it still have meaning even if absolutly everything you wrote was terrible? I beleive that regardless of the quality of it it builds the foundation for something great. More than once an idea ive had but couldnt find the right words for was used in so many bad songs before it became the theme for one of ny favorute songs i ever wrote. And it's funny because i completely forget about it, im reminded of it if i look through my writings, suddenly a similar sentence catches my eye and im like "wait i didnt even realise i was doing that" it's truely like recycling but it becomes better every time.

Actually i think ive learned that from art. There are so many exercises where youre drawing one thing, then you start over but with a time limit, then you start over but with a shorter time limit. Or the drawing gets tinuer every time. And each and every one of them helps you focus on teh important things and builds your skill. Eventhough it's less detailed the 3rd time it's often more certain and polished. Because you learn to recognize the key elements and the "personality" of what you're trying to create".

I think that's very interesting and applies to many things and especially writing. But back to the draft thing

dont tell yourself it's "meant to be bad", it's not. It's also not meant to be great tho. That's way too stressful to think about. It's just meant to be. That's it. All it has to do is being. Cuz it's the first step and often the hardest one, after that you can worry about changing what you dont like but at first you just let it be.

That's my advice, it helped me get over fear of failure countless times and frankly learn a lot of skills too, eventhough i am still very self critical.

I also wonder if i could really do this, and idk your situation but personally rn i cant really do anything but try to because i cant work anywhere and i basically have months of nothing until i get drafted to the army. Which is very weird cuz all my freinds are already drafting(im a lil younger), i always thought I'd get to work or learn how to drive during this time but now i can't so i better use this time to prove myself i can work towards my dreams.

And i got nothing to lose here cuz i already stuck at home without much to do so instead of thinking it's too big for me (does that phrase work in english?idk it's almost 4 am) i just do what i can i guess. Are you in a similar situation or are you doing uni atm? Balancing between school and passion projects can be tiering sometimes!

Happy (late) sts! What's your writing routine? Do you have a regular word count/ hour goal? Do you plan what you write in advance?

I didn't really have a writing routine at the time of this ask XD. So thank you for asking, here is a very late answer!

Since 1st September 2020 I have given myself a special goal - write every day for 30 days straight to build a writing habit.

I just felt so anxious when I sat down to write. I can't logically reason with it, I love daydreaming and I love planning and creating character arcs and the world, and I had an outline I was happy with but writing just...hurt. I was never happy with what I wrote and I was always stressed out when writing.

And then I thought that maybe it was because I was pressuring myself to fulfil my vision so much. To follow the perfect outlined plan, to live up to the images inside my head. To my own made up idea of being a writer when I can't imagine not being one.

I wasn't getting anywhere. And if writing really turned out not being for me, it was time to find out.

So I made the goal of writing every day at least 300 words. I chose to write notes and thoughts, a stream of consciousness kind of writing to not feel stressed out by the story and just concentrate on the act itself. I wrote these entries as letters to my fave fictional character to touch on some kind of emotional truth inside myself - an advice from Gayle Foreman.

My goal is 300 words a day at the least. I write 500-600 on average and 1000-1500 on a good day.

It doesn't take me more than 10 minutes. I can write 300 words in 5 when I have something to say. But the long ones I really enjoy and lose myself in. I relax. I listen to myself and talk. I record my thoughts. About my day. The story. Something that made an impact or hurt me or made me smile. Something meaningful. Something average. I started to look forward to those few minutes of writing. I became faster in the last 2 weeks. I needed 40 minutes for the 500 words before. Now I need 10. I realized a lot of useful stuff about my characters and stories. Some letters are just plain wip brainstorming as a I follow where my thoughts take me, trying to match the typing speed with my brain. I realized a lots of stuff this way. I grew fond of the lines. I'm proud of many of them.

This exercises reminded me how much I love writing. The act itself. The joy of finding the right word for the emotion going through me, the word plays, the expressions. I'm known to be able to name things, to identify the unspeakable, to explain the unimaginable. This love for words, for discussions, for meaning followed me my whole life.

I'm a creature of meaning. I don't do things randomly. I loved essays in school, defining the themes in literature, discussing movies after seeing them. I love themes and symbols and metaphors. I do things because they mean something. I do things for fun though, cause fun is what often makes them meaningful.

That's why advice like don't worry about your first draft, it's meant to be bad doesn't work for me. Every fiber of my being resents that sentence. I won't write something I expect to be bad. That isn't a relaxing thought at all, it's despicable to me. I'm a chronic perfectionist. I look for meaning. I don't do things halfway.

That's why writing a story as important to me as 5th Magic became excruciating. On one hand it felt meaningful on the other I felt awful pressure. It froze me inside. Paralyzed me from writing.

It seems the key for me is to find the right balance between pressure and relaxation. Confidence and fear, excitement and discipline. Something that feels important but not chokingly so.

I'm not sure how to go about this when writing Stormkeeper. I know I like following through with a plan. That I like keeping promises to myself. That I can force myself to write every day in the worst mood and enjoy it in the end or look forward to it the whole day, when 1k words isn't enough. I know I love writing. And I have a story to tell.

But how I will go about writing it for real? Who knows? Story is a bit different than letters, plot different than diaries. But I feel on the right path right now at least. If anyone has any ideas though I'm still looking for a tip that will work XD.

Shanghai. Again.

So I went to Shanghai again last week.

(I know. Ridiculous.)

A few thoughts... Consider this a sequel to last year's concluding thoughts and guide.

The Show

Some cuts that made me sad; some improvements that made me very happy. I'll do my best not to spoil.

The Porter/Boy Witch story has improved, because they have incorporated moments to replace some of the ones that are missing due to the changed lobby space.

I love one moment where Boy Witch looks at himself in a half-shrouded mirror. If you stand behind him, you see his reflection looking back at him in the mirror, and the Porter, like another reflection, peering at him from behind the curtain to the lobby desk.

And while I still miss the Porter's mirror in "Moonlight Becomes You," I love that if you stand in the right spot, you can watch both him and Lady Macduff, their movements mirroring each other.

Boy Witch has a great moment, coming up from the ballroom dance and after teasing the audience at the lost & found, where he walks through a long dark corridor into the lobby. Following behind him, you walk into the darkness, his shadowed outline slowly becoming apparent as you approach the light of the lobby. It's a powerful moment; Boy Witch in general feels more ominous in Shanghai.

"Witches 1" looks so beautiful. I've never found a reliable place to watch the New York version - some angles are always difficult to see. But in Shanghai, the lobby desk functions like a proscenium stage, and if you stand in the center you can see the whole thing clearly. They use the space so well, the witches spending more time behind and atop the counter, and the symmetry of the spacing and the movements is gorgeous to watch.

The lack of "Is That All There Is?" is still a huge loss. :(

I also adore the moment of the Bride dancing in the trees - not only is it beautiful, but it feels achingly like Wendy in Drowned Man.

I'm sad that they cut the hide and seek between Sexy Witch and the Bride on High Street. It was so much fun, although I'd guess that the logistics were too difficult.

I do love the new scene those two have together, but in general I don't feel like the Bride's story has as compelling of a narrative arc now as it had in December. Her relationship with Sexy Witch also isn't as clear to me now.

I really miss Hecate's fifth floor scene with the Bride, also cut. :( I felt that it incorporated the Bride more clearly into the existing narrative, better clarified her relationship with Hecate, and added emotional resonance to her story.

The Husband has a more developed story now, and I loved the emotional arc of his loop.

Duncan does something totally unexpected and brilliant. Which again, I won't spoil. But I loved it.

I greatly appreciate how much more dynamic and interesting the loops of Duncan, Cunning Man, and Speakeasy Barman have become. I know there are fans who enjoy watching a character sleep, or sew, or scrub cardboard, but to me these just seem like side effects of poorly defined character loops, and I don't mourn the loss. I think it's great that these characters have more to do.

There are new 1:1s. I had some but not others. All of the ones I had impressed me very much. I won't say anything else since it's spoilery, but kudos to Punchdrunk for doing a great job developing these. 

The commercialism of the product tie-ins is a little bit distracting. But I don't think that the integrity of the show itself is compromised. The show is a work of art; I'd rather Budweiser and Kans spend their money on it than on another stupid TV commercial. I think people who criticize forget that art throughout history has been sponsored by those with money.

For the most part, the audience has gotten better since December. The stewarding is great, and one of the Woman in Bar characters actually demonstrates in her lift speech how to give performers space. It helps.

But I did make the mistake of going to the 100th show party, which was by far the worst audience experience I've ever had at a Punchdrunk show. I've honestly never experienced anything like it. People shoving ahead and pushing you behind them like a wild mob. There was no way to win - either you fall behind and can barely see, or you push ahead too, and either way you feel awful. I can't imagine how stressful this must have been for the performers as well. :(

On the plus side, 100th show Follies was delightful. (Only it's not called Follies there, I forget the actual name.) Fun to see such an interesting combination of people on stage - Lily and Sam, Conor and Garth, and several of the local cast.

The Performers

I don't even know where to begin. There are so many brilliant performers doing exceptional work; even in eight shows I didn't have time to follow everyone I wanted to see. A few specific thoughts:

Andrea Carrucciu

Andrea is brilliant. I can't complement his performances enough. He's exceptionally expressive with both his body and his eyes. From Porter to Macbeth he absolutely transforms, from sweet and awkward to intense and terrifying.  His "Moonlight Becomes You" is beautiful, and his Macbeth is convincing both in his monstrousness as a killer and the aching vulnerability of Macbeth as a man who is in way over his head.

Fania Grigoriou

Fania is delightful to follow and brilliant at engaging the audience. She fully embodies her characters in every way. The contemptuous blasphemy of her Bald Witch must be seen to be believed.

The witch combination of Fania, Miranda, and Olly is the best I've ever seen, which is saying a LOT. They have the most amazing energy, pushing each other to the next level, shrieking and cackling and smacking each other, so absolutely delightful and wicked and thrilling. I'm in awe.

Lee Wen Hsin (Debby)

I somehow ended up watching her Dragon Boat scene like five times, and was consistently awed at her performance every time.

Lily Ockwell

In some ways Lily was the star during this visit. Every show she popped up in a surprising role - Lady Macbeth, Bride, Sexy Witch, Lady Macduff, and Nurse.

I never would have expected to see her as Lady Macbeth, but she totally killed it. Lily exudes sympathetic humanity, which made the cruelty of her actions toward Duncan even more painful to watch, and her remorse completely convincing. Her final bathtub scene was heartbreaking.

Also, her Sexy Witch scream in the rave deserves its own credit in the program. I knew it was coming and I still jumped out of my skin.

Liu Yu

His Calloway is charming, handsome, and by the end he remembered the names of everyone in my group. Seems like the entire show might stop running if he ever takes a sick day.

Miranda Mac Letten

Miranda's Sexy Witch is a work of art. Dark and haunting, more layered and mysterious and compelling than I ever thought Sexy Witch could be. Her bar solo seems to defy gravity and move at light speed; it's a stunning accomplishment.

Olly Hornsby-Sayer

Olly has totally come into his own as a performer - he’s very confident and comfortable with the audience, and seems like he enjoys his roles. I had a great time following him. At one point as Boy Witch, he startled me and other audience members so much that we screamed out loud. He's gotten so great at the Boy Witch eye contact and audience interaction. As Speakeasy he was an absolute delight - I found myself laughing multiple times throughout his loop.

Omar Gordon

Some of his dialog as Cunning Man cracked me the fuck up, which I will not quote here because it's spoilery, but omg. Brilliant.

Omar's Banquo is also fabulous, never more so than in the ballroom dance, where his chemistry with Fania's Bald Witch lights up the room.

Sam Booth

Sam is a genius, let's be honest. He took a character that spends half his NY loop sleeping, and made it into one of the most interesting performances in the show. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say this Duncan feels deeply and uniquely human, and his story is absolutely haunting.

Shen Ni

Her Hecate is riveting and terrifying.

Tang Tingting

In both her roles, she is one of the most impressive Punchdrunk performers I've ever seen. She has such presence, and can go from otherworldly and intimidating to profoundly human and sympathetic.

Tim Bartlett

I was very impressed with what I saw of his Taxidermist - didn't get any 1:1s, but even just watching his loop, I loved the intensity of his nervous energy, and the humor in his friendship with Speakeasy.

The Spaces

The Drama Hotel is open - it's Shakespeare-themed, expensive, and not designed by Punchdrunk.  It has an outdoor bar on the ground level, which is more lively than the Manderley after the show.

The eighth floor rooftop has the Cosmos Cafe, which looks like a bland version of Gallow Green, also isn't designed by Punchdrunk, and doesn't serve alcohol. The views are gorgeous.

The seventh floor has both a speakeasy and a restaurant, also not designed by Punchdrunk. I didn't go into the restaurant (it doesn't have vegan options) but I loved the speakeasy. We met a fabulous bartender there named Eddie, who'd traveled the world - his cocktails and conversation rivaled the best bartenders I've met anywhere.

The different bars feature two different cocktails named "Sleep No More" - one absinthe-based and one espresso-based. The espresso one was particularly fabulous (and appropriately named!).

Shanghai

A few updates to the recommendations I shared last time:

* James Turrell "Immersive Light" exhibition at the Long Museum. Fascinating series of artworks created with light; worth spending half a day to take it in.

* M50 Arts District, especially the Island6 gallery and its amazing artworks incorporating video, light, sound, and interactivity.

* Propaganda Poster Museum - incredibly interesting, and sheds so much light on China's historical perspective on the West.

* Huangpu River Cruise at dusk - amazing to watch the futuristic cityscape light up around you as the sun sets.

* Mount Sanqingshan - we took a two-night trip here via high speed train and climbed a beautiful mountain. Thank you @whenwillweawake​ for planning it!

The Drowned Man

I was traveling with a group who were mostly Drowned Man fans, and talking mostly to cast members who'd been in Drowned Man. Everything seemed to bring up memories of it, and we talked about it for hours. It continues to awe me how deeply that show left its impression on our souls.

In fact, I often call him “Cheese Doodle Bitch.” But -- I get it. “Bitch” IS sexist. So I deleted the fuckin’ tweet. But that’s in my real life. A play is a different story. The only thing that I really want or care about is this idea of, I somehow write a play at my kitchen table, and then later people I’ve never met get together in places I’ve never been and have hopefully a good experience together communally, based off the fact that I wrote something at my kitchen table. That gets me going. I’m just happy they’re doing the plays. I remember when I did Our Lady of 121stStreet in Chicago, one guy was like, “In Chicago, there’s a lot of theatre, and so there’s a lot of opportunities. But largely there’s white theatre and there’s a black theatre and a Latin theatre, and they’re all thriving. But you wrote a play that forces those three things to come together so we get an experience that we don’t normally get.” What else is there? A play is not a cure for cancer. The best play in the world is not going to make peace. Where do you get your inspiration for your plays? Are they based on personal experience?

I wrote a play a few years ago called The Little Flower of East Orange, and it dealt with family. And people saw that play as being overtly autobiographical. And it was interesting because it was, but it wasn’t. I don’t think it was any more autobiographical than anything else I’ve written—just like the employment of metaphor. It’s AGT’s Daniel Emmet, he’s cute, he’s talented and he has a huge heart. Daniel Emmet is from Rochester, NY.  And it has always been his passion to sing when he was 15-years-old, he moved to Las Vegas, NV and began taking music lessons, ones that would eventually lead him to his journey on America’s Got Talent.

Initially, PCG magazine didn’t know what to expect from his audition. Afterward, our ears were beyond amazed, in the same way, the audience and judges felt.

Emmet shared how music became a passion, particularly, after moving to Las Vegas.

I always enjoyed singing when I was younger, but it never really became a passion for me until I moved to Las Vegas at age 15. While in high school, I had an opportunity to perform (for the very first time outside of a school play) at a Gala for the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. It was in front of about 800 people, and I was so unprepared for how emotional that moment would be. I learned then and there just how powerful music can be, and how as a performer you have a chance to lift people’s spirits and take them out of their day-to-day life for the time that you’re entertaining them. Once I understood that, I knew I wanted to make music for the rest of my life.”

Equally as important, Emmet is a multi-lingual vocalist, in fact, did you guys know that Daniel knows six languages?

I really fell in love with singing in different languages in college. I studied music at Chapman University, and I was very fortunate to have great professors and resources there to learn to sing in the different languages. I would have to say my favorite performance on AGT this far has been “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” because it combined my love of singing in a foreign language, and it was a chance to really do something unexpected for a classical singer. I was able to combine my love of classical music and my love of rock ’n’ roll into one song! Plus there was actual fire on stage, and that’s just way too cool.”

Indeed, he is pure talent, the whole package.

I mean, his wide range of musical expression crosses far across the genre spectrum, including Opera and he learns quickly, in fact, Simon gave him a song to learn and he only had one hour.

“Well, it was absolutely an adrenaline-junkie worthy hour! I think that because there was a time constraint, I almost didn’t have time to be nervous, I just knew I had to learn it, I had to get it done, and through sheer adrenaline and determination it came together, and while terrifying, it was a moment I’ll never forget.
”

Inspiring, we can’t imagine how intense that moment was for Daniel. But he nailed it and literally blew the judges and audience right off the stage. It was such a powerful performance, especially, taking into account he only had 1-hour to learn the new song.

The most incredible feeling in the world is knowing that you “made it,” to your next destination in your journey. After all, it’s an emotion you’ll never forget and we asked how it felt to see himself on television for the first time.

It felt so surreal, it was an out-of-body experience for me, and I can say with certainty that all of the emotions from the audition came rushing back as I watched myself on TV for the first time. It was such a crazy moment for me, I couldn’t believe it was really happening!”

Afterward, it was time to be judged, yet, once again he shocked the audience, judges and got through to the next act. Emmet opened up about his audition and hearing what the judges had to say after his performance.

Both, the Sepsis Alliance and Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation have aimed to help those in need have greater odds of surviving with a critical illness. And PCG magazine loves a good cause, it’s great to hear that Daniel Emmet has taken the opportunity to work with both charities.

That’s what makes Daniel shine, he’s not afraid to try, he has a big heart and he’s extremely talented.

Especially now that I live in a desert, something I’ll always cherish are my memories of cutting down Christmas trees with my family when I was younger. It’s simple, but its special, and not everyone lives in a place where you can do that.”
