story time about a (possibly) new hobby(?)

(it got kinda long, so feel free to skip hahah)

so. part of my this year's resolution was to learn an erhu... or any musical instrument, really. and i attended an introductory chinese instruments workshop recently.

it was super fun!! they let us try a few instruments, like...

the smiling frying pan (zhong)ruan, which is like a guitar, but round.

dizi ー although since it's a wind instrument they didn't let us actually play it, because. you know. hygiene reasons. kinda amazing to think that the instrument's life and blood is pretty much a small sheet of rice paper... the xiao was also kinda interesting!! such a low and unique sound ✨

pipa... it's a very cool and pretty-sounding instrument for sure, but i don't think i'll have the brainpower to remember and learn the finger techniques ;;;

erhu. while i only managed to make noises akin to killing chickens didn't really manage to make a decent sound on it, it's definitely an instrument i might want to learn more than the others!! we got to see a true expert play in person, and. man. it does sound so... idk how to describe it. soulful? but also, i might be biased bc zhongli's theme has an erhu in it hahahah also the way zhonghu sounds??? 💗

guzheng!!!! they sound soooo good in-person... especially the expensive one.... figures orz also i found this while doing my own research but did you know that guzheng has areas on its back called 'phoenix eyes' (to insert the strings), 'dragon cave' (sound hole 1), and 'heavenly pond' (sound hole 2)? plus, the hanzis for certain top parts also contains the dragon/phoenix/mountain characters and i think it's neat lol

i've tried piano and guitar in the past, but i never really felt attached to them. but... i fell in love with the guzheng. i wanna learn it so badly.

but the (decent) instrument is so expensive, it's incredibly massive (the travel-sized ones are even more expensive orz), and the maintenance seems like a nightmare???? (although i think musical instruments maintenance in general is a nightmare anyway?? idk)

anyway, i did book a trial guzheng lesson. and maybe if it really hooks me up i'll attend a few normal classes... and if my interest holds up, i might consider buying a secondhand one? on the other hand, it also feels like i should try to fully ride the waves while this excitement is going 📈🔺⏫.... hrhsldkjflsjd idk anymore ;;;;

Firstly, why should I start gamifying my life?

A: It instantly motivates you and encourages long-term motivation to it's game elements (eg: levelling-up) , making reaching goals and doing work so much easier!!

1)Track your progress ✍️

A popular website/app for gamifying your life is HABITICA!

HABITICA a highly customisable habit/to-dos/goal tracker website/app for students and working adults. I use this website for the daily grind, and I can testify that ITS WORKING, I'M ON THE GRIND 💪.

Completing your habits/to-dos/goals gives you coins, which you can spend on rewards (eg: eating ice-cream) and cool armour! You can even join a clan to fight monsters with your friends using your completed tasks.

HABITICA keeps you engaged with a point system, competition with other clans, incorporating game elements, and rewards.

2) Keep consistent 📈🔺

Many seem to reach a plateau in their productiveness or simply lose inerest in their goals and habits.

It's important to keep consistent so habits stick, and we can reach our goal.

Identify your motivator

Ask yourself these three questions everyday

What is my motivator?

What will I gain from this?

What will I lose from this?

You can even write this down on your HABITICA as a daily or any other notebook/ website of your choice!!

3. Visualise the outcome of when you have completed your habit/goal/to-do

Running these scenarios adds an extra boost to your gamifying experience, driving you to work towards the outcome of the goal and further away from quitting.

3) Reflect, revise and reward

It's important to take a look at your ticked to-do list at the end of the day and your HABITCA dashboard to see how much you have accomplished.

The visual tracking of progress motivates greatly, and even seeing the rewards you gave yourself can spur you on.

Then, you can decide how much rewards you can have, how much EXP you gained, and how much you can level up. Maybe you even gain a new title ;)

In addition, it's important to reflect on the mistakes you made, for example, it may be overscheduling tasks or rushing through an essay, and deduct EXP and points. (ouch!!)

Improve your gami-life step by step, level by level, and life inexplicably becomes just like a video game.

On the night of October 7, my life and my family's life changed forever.

My name is Ihab Al-Anqar, and I live in Gaza.

A member of a family of 9 members. My father , Muhammad, is 50 years old, my mother is Nima, 48 years old, my older brother, Sobhi, is 33 years old, Hassan is 30 years old, Saeed is 28 years old, Bahaa is 25 years old, I am Ihab, 24 years old, Alaa is 23 years old, and my younger brother Ahmed is 16 years old.

We used to live in a simple home in northern Gaza—me, my mother, my father, my siblings, and their children. We lived in relative safety despite the daily struggles faced by the people of Gaza, like so many other families striving to meet their basic needs It was bombed and there was nothing left of it

But on that fateful night, we heard the sounds of explosions and shells drawing closer to us in a terrifying way 🔥💥. Fear took over us 😢💔, and we had to make a quick decision. There was no time to think or say goodbye to the home that had sheltered us for years 🏠💭. We left everything behind: our dreams, our memories, and the life details we had gathered over the years. We fled south 🏃‍♂️💨, hoping it would be a safer place 🛡️.

We arrived at our relatives’ house in southern Gaza after a long and exhausting journey 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️, with faint hope that we had found a safe haven. But unfortunately, the situation was no better; we were also threatened there 🚨💣, and soon a missile hit the house, turning it into rubble before our eyes 💔🏚️. At that moment, I felt that safety was an illusion, and that no matter where we went, we would continue to be chased by fire and destruction 🔥💔.

We found ourselves displaced again, but this time with no real shelter 🏕️. We moved to tents in Rafah, searching for temporary refuge ⛺. Yet, these tents were just a temporary stop, as if fate had decided we would find no place to rest 😞. Shortly after, we had to leave again, this time to the central region 🌍, where there was no roof to shield us from the harsh weather, nor walls to keep us warm from the night’s chill 🌧️❄️.

In this situation, life turned into a series of harsh challenges; we had become homeless, living in inhumane conditions 🚫😔.

The water we drink is contaminated 💧🤢, and each sip carries the risk of illness 😷.

Food has become scarce due to the steep rise in prices 💵📈, and our children have nothing to ease their hunger 🍞.

There is no source of income to help us face these conditions, nor do we receive enough aid; it feels as if we have been forgotten 🥀.

With each passing day, conditions worsen, and garbage piles up around us without disposal 🚮🦠, emitting smells that make breathing difficult and increasing the threat of epidemics and diseases 😣🤧. We live in a harsh and unhealthy environment, and with the spread of diseases, the fear of death feels closer than ever ⚠️💀.

Each day, we live as survivors of an ongoing catastrophe 🥀, trying to endure conditions that break the spirit and exhaust the body 🥺💔. We feel as if we’re caught between hope and despair, holding onto each other 🤲, hoping that one day we will find the safety and human dignity that we lost 🕊️🌅.

🥤 - recommend an author or fanfic you love

Oh booooooy I have a lot, and I do mean a lot. But one off the top of my head is The Silence Between the Snowflakes from none other than you haha. This is the best fix-it King's Quest fic I've read and it's so good it thoroughly re-wired my brain into thinking the events in the fic was canon (e.g. Icebella's name. That will haunt me with how convinced I was it was canon only to find out it was from this fanfic).

❄️ - what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best?

I did mention it in the past what I would dream about as a plot, but another one I have in mind is the re-write for Escape From Monkey Island. An absolute dream of mine to have it completely done from the ground up. As to who would do it, I can think of two people, one of them being @nexttrickanvils because she shares the same level of annoyance to the game as I do and @flurrin because we have talked about it in the past.

🧩 - what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?

I let grammar kinda slide, if only because I know for some that might be their first fic so I'm kinda patient (kinda being the keyword... if it's a series of mis-spelled words it's a click out for me). But the guarantee one-way ticket for me to bounce out of a fic? Having a character be OOC. I.... despise out of character from a fave character of mine because instead of reading the fic I'm just fuming going "They Wouldn't Say That/ Act Like That" and I'm not having fun.
