a Chicago Fire one shot: Violet Mikami X Sam Carver

Summary:

In the traumatic aftermath of Hawkin's death, can Violet allow herself to ever free-fall into love again? Is she ready to pursue a romance with a firehouse bombshell?

Will being bold pay off for Sam Carver or will he end up facing rejection.

Sam Carver is an infernal distraction! Albeit a more smiley, gleeful menace than vengeful viperish sort. There's something alluring about those damnably deep sea-blue eyes. At first their ceaseless fathoms are aloof, a mere temptation, that can easily be glossed over. Then, with a more discerning stare, they become deceptively inviting and hopelessly warm. It is in staring that something occurs to Violet. A thought she desperately wishes to suppress, despite how electrifying it is. He is the wildcard that she never saw coming. A shot at love that she had never truly considered.

Sam, as irredeemable as he feels, can find himself lost. Helplessly tangled in a ball of ceaseless knots. For the first time, in what feels like an eternity, there is a stimulation greater than what the piney taste of alcohol can provide. It's her. His angel of mercy is vivacious, alive like the breath of Spring.

Violet's sheepish glances, the ones she cast in his direction before catching herself and diverting, send his heart into a dizzyingly frantic frenzy. What keeps her pushing away? Was he so undesirable? Had he audibly mentioned something she found appalling?

A pinch of shame coils through Carver as Violet occupies herself once more instead of joining him at his table. In truth, he had chased Cap out of that damnably vacated seat opposite him.

Sam yearned for this shared time with a quieted sense of desperation. This time after shift, when she'd allow tension-riddled lips to unfurl into a glorious grin. A grin she would cast towards him. When she'd sit next to him. For a solitary moment, he could almost pretend to be whole, instead of the fractured soul he knew he was. He feels a deepening ache spiderweb palpably, branching out through his arms till it hits his curling fingers. What had he done? The thought blazes through his mind like a flashover, searing and suffocating.

Carver's presence is tantalizingly magnetic. The minute she enters Molly's, Violet's eyes instantly seek him out amongst the familiar brood of faces. The doleful dark orbs pursue him the way they once had Evan. And then it comes colliding back like a ferocious tidal wave, that crippling, clawing of razor-sharp guilt. Within seconds, her heart is in shredded tatters again. It's shallow thrum becomes agonizing.

How could she ever move on? Violet can't. Not now. If Sam gave her one of his patented empathetic glances, she might melt. She might liquify into his sturdy, capable arms of his. How shameful would that be? For her to put her beloved Evan in the rearview mirror so casually? Wouldn't it be better to shut that wantonly feeling part of her down?

Delving into wedding planning is just the diversion she requires. Hurried are her steps as she moves to leave. A month doesn't leave her with nearly enough time to finish all the things she must as the newly crowned Maid of Honor. She intends to depart from Molly's in order to inspect a place that Cap had recommended for a bachelorette party. She knows Sylvie has incredibly high standards. Standards she can't meet if she's preoccupied with Sam Carver.

"Can we talk?" A masculine voice, so sweet, and so honeyed beckoned. For the inkling of a breath, Violet wished there hadn't been the vaguest semblance of familiarity carried by every syllable. She swallows down a thick sense of dread as she turns, turns to him the object of incessant strife and even more pining.

Violet's exhale grows rigid as he reaches for her. His strong fingers gingerly anchor around her porcelain wrist. "Sure. What is it?" She manages to amble out, her whirling mind taking a few seconds too long to catch up to her mouth.

He laxes his grip as she willingly decides to delay whatever errand had her in such haste. Carver feels his shoulders crumble, just a hair. Her tone was every bit as amicable as it had been at the firehouse and yet, his intestines seem to coldly coil. "Have I," he starts, courage fleeting as his heart begins to drum more fiercely. "Have I said or done something to offend you?" Carver manages to breathlessly blurt out.

Violet recoils slightly. Jilting in the faintest fashion, as if scalded when reaching into an oven to retrieve a snack she forgot was hot. That is nothing in the ballpark of what she had anticipated to hear. "What?" Oh, how silly the questioning word sounded when it landed upon the shell of her ears. Her tongue wets the parched curve of her lip and readies with more intelligible speech when he patiently interjects.

"I feel like I should apologize. I'm just not sure what I'd be apologizing for." Sam manages, his hands raising into a gesture he hopes would be perceived as placating.

"I- I don't understand." Violet murmurs. Her dark brows scrunch together in confusion over the subtle slope of her nose. A part of her perfectly manicured facade crumbles as her eyes met his. His eyes are so turquoise, they engulf her like a readily foaming, Summer Seas. "Is there something you should apologize for?"

He plows his hand through his luxurious brunette stands. Averting his gaze, he attempts to tally up anything that might be misconstrued as rude or awful. "I don't know. It's just, you were ignoring me in there." His head cants towards Molly's door. "I thought I had said something to affront you."

"Like what? Offering to help me in a time of need?" She softly challenges. But then, Violet bristles. The misunderstanding now coming into closer definition. "I-" Her voice quavers as if it lacked solid substance. It was difficult to ignore now that the utterance had fallen precariously from his lips. She had been ignoring him. She had hoped he wouldn't notice."You've done --- done nothing. Believe me." Mikami reiterates, in a tone she prayed was more believable than the last she employed.

"Then what is it?" Sam treads dangerously closer, his tone as careless as a lover's whisper. The space between them closing intimately. Unfurling a clenched hand, he thoughtlessly presses it to her cheek. "Just tell me what I've done. I don't want to feel like we're waking on eggshells." He eagerly prods.

His sudden tender touch catches her off guard so much so that Violet seizes up. Aghast lips part, her eyes readily searching him only to startle at the intensity of his gaze. She'd seen that look from Evan. Was it even fair to consider asking Sam Carver to live in Hawkin's shadows?

It occurs to him to retract the hand pressed to Mikami's cheek. Yet, human contact, as little as it was, only fueled his yearning. Carver gently strokes his thumb along her wonderfully smooth skin. "Do I frighten you?" He asks, dropping his voice into an unintentional silvery sotte-voce.

Her face burns crimson beneath the ghosting of his delicate touch. She wills her clenching jaw to unhinge, to gift him an answer that he deserves. One, preferably, that would not drive him away forever. "No, I- I'm not afraid of you. It's just..." Violet finds herself leaning haphazardly inwards till they are nearly chest to chest.

Carver laughs a bit to expel the nervous energy swelling up inside his form. He once more entreats, "What is it?"

Violet swallows impossibly hard. How could she relate the sheer level of emotion that bathed over her every time he so much as peered in her direction? Ebony lashes flit downwards to grace the globes of her cheeks."I promised myself after ---" she feels her voice hitch, "after Evan, that I would never fall in love again. But you're here and you're making that promise so damn hard to keep! I don't want to end up with my heart broken. Statistically, avoiding the heartbreak is ---"

Her words are smothered under the sudden heat of his lips as they crash with her's. Oh, he knows he ought not to have crossed that line. Controlling his impulses had never been one of his fortes.

All he can think of is how beautiful Violet is under the golden glow of the streetlights as they slowly flitter to life. He makes no urgent effort to withdraw from her space, even if the name of Evan does bring up a pinch of envy. A pinch that seemingly traverses his spine in the amount of time it takes for his next breath to be drawn. He knows she's still burned, still devastated from that loss. He could never hope to compare, he could never even think about trying to replace a man who was so dearly treasured.

"I don't want to replace him, Violet." Sam ventures to express while she is still visibly reeling. "Lord knows I never could." He reminds her. "I just want to take care of you, to help you. I want you to know that it's okay to let somebody in. Anybody. Doesn't have to be me." He adds. His thumb blazes another trail over her skin again.

Violet blinks up at him in bewilderment. The astonishment flooding through her veins wars across all of her suddenly warm features. He just kissed her. Was that real? Had she imagined it? Had she imagined how silky and comforting being kissed by him could be? Her hand gradually unfurls against his chest, she's only half listening as he ambles out his speech. Was this Evan's way of letting her know that it's okay to let go? That she should embrace this new avenue while it was presented. But Carver was a firefighter, a feckless one at that. She's already had to treat him a few times in the back of the ambulance.

Relentless thunder fills her eardrums as her eyes flash back upwards. "I ---" She swallows again, revisiting his offer to help and protect her. It was sweet. Sweet in all the ways she had been longing for. "I'm not sure I'm ready for this." She whispers, afraid the fragile quality of her own voice might ruin whatever kind of moment was transpiring between them.

"Take all the time you need," Sam assures her. "My father used to say the right one is always worth the wait." He relates, allowing himself to be quite open in a way that made him feel vulnerable. "Just know that you can call out my name. I'll be there in a heartbeat. All you have to do is ask." He swallows, his own voice quivering a degree. "On the nights you feel outnumbered, I'll be out there somewhere."

How Many Sugars..?

When Faith makes coffee for herself, she makes it more on the bitter side. She didn't always make it that way, but as she got older and more tired she began to prefer it differently. She doesn't know why she drinks it anymore. Coffee just makes her feel even more exhausted, but the warmth is comforting.

She likes when Max brings it to her, couldn't imagine the reason. Faith swears it's sweeter when he makes it.

but I thought he told me he didn't care much for sweets, she thinks to herself, why does he make it like that.

Faith won't admit she likes it so much better when he makes it. She won't admit why either.

The truth is the first time Max made her coffee he genuinely didn't know just how she liked it yet. Faith enjoys sweets quite a bit so he guessed. He was quite surprised when she took a sip and exclaimed "oh! That's sweet." But he noticed the way her face softened and how much her mood improved that day compared to when she prepares it herself. Now whenever Max makes coffee for his captain he always sneaks a little sweetness in there. He's not sure whether that was what made her so relaxed that day, or if it was simply because he was the one who made it for her. Nevertheless, he wants to make it the same every time, just to be able to see her like that over and over again. It makes him feel warm inside.

What a curious thing something so minuscule could do to someone... he thinks.

Nobody can disrupt his composure quite like she can.

i think my latest fanfiction sojourn might be what finally pushes me over the edge into actually writing again. mostly because i haven't been so at odds with the popular fanon interpretations of a main pairing in uhhh actually possibly ever. it would mean having to subject myself to another rewatch of a movie for which I have the world's most tepid feelings but. Honestly I haven't felt this motivated to write in years. and it's not that the fics I've been reading are "bad" some of them are certified bangers I've just had the most unfortunate onset of 'nobody understands this character but me' syndrome come over me and like! i can either fume silently, complain about it annoyingly, or write what i want to see in the world. so! gonna ride this wave of irritation all the way to the bank baybee!!!!

and for the record since i feel like this might get confusing otherwise, I'm gonna be defaulting to F:NV Avery for the time being and foreseeable future. I've been really enjoying the rewrite. Core things about him, personality traits, morals, favorite snack foods etc, are unchanged but some story and design elements might shift around. Still same ol' Avery at the end of the day. FO:4 flavor Avery isn't so much nixed as he is shelved.

I went through all companion banters on DanaDuchy's channel after playing the game to write down all facts about companions/the world that I haven't seen brought up anywhere in the game as a writing reference (and for funsies).

Note: This list may not be exhaustive. I might have missed some something or didn't write it down because I considered it common knowledge. If you have anything to add, please DM me or send an ask! (do specify what banter the information is coming from, though)

Note 2: Posts from this series (mostly) don't include information from banters specific to quests or between companions and faction members. I plan to do another playthrough to capture more of those and will add any relevant info to the character posts.

About Emmrich:

Family and early life:

“Volkarin” is a commoner’s name. Emmrich’s father was a butcher, and his mother was a cook 

When Emmrich was around 5 years old, his neighbours had a pig named Lucy. He was very fond of her, and she’d always let him hug her around his neck

Emmrich grew up poor (clocked by Neve based on the way he always saves his candle stubs, shows up first for meals and never leaves food on his plate) 

Emmrich grew up hearing that all dragons were so hostile they had to be slain and is surprised that Taash has found ways to deal with them peacefully 

General:

The gold Emmrich’ wears is called “grave-dowry” (or “grave gold”). It’s a Nevarran custom to wear precious objects one would like to take to their grave

Emmrich’s bracelet (not specified which one) was gifted to him on the day he became a full Watcher. The ring with a large stone was the last gift from his father. The skull pin doesn’t have a story, he just likes it

Emmrich isn’t fond of the Nevarran nobility

Emmrich’s shaving cream smells like potash (at least to Taash)

Emmrich uses moss perfume with flowers

Emmrich likes melons, mushrooms and pineapples. He also enjoyed a plate of fried leeks and potatoes at Halos’s stand in Minrathous

Emmrich always thought he’d get married one day

After a Minrathous merchant sells Emmrich fake charms, he causes him to see skeletal faces on the windows and hear spirits whispering that false goods endanger lives as punishment. Emmrich agrees to stop once Neve tells him that she can convince the merchant to get back to selling linen if the visions cease

On magic and studies:

Some deaths may leave emotional imprints so intense Emmrich may feel them decades later 

Emmrich thinks the magic of old Elven artefacts is “rigid” 

Emmrich isn’t very good at figuring out Elven artefacts (by his own admission)

Emmrich’s first published work was A Monograph on the Vagaries of Determining a Body's Time of Death

Emmrich is roughly familiar with the dragon anatomy

Emmrich knows a lot about how bodies work (muscle-wise etc.) from the time he performed autopsies

On life in the Necropolis: 

When Emmrich fell for another boy during his youth, he showed him a corpse he was allowed to practice dissection on. The date was ruined by a passing wisp possessing the body and causing it to sit up and ruin the mood 

Emmrich tutored Dorian during his term in the Necropolis (“Tremendous potential, but appallingly flippant towards the dead”)

Emmrich and other watchers live in the Necropolis (Emmrich has a flat there)

On life at the Lighthouse:

It took 8 skeletons half a day to bring that slab of marble into Emmrich’s room

He didn’t bring his entire collection of books to the Lighthouse (there are more)

Emmrich talks to skulls in his room 

Lighthouse kitchen reminds Emmrich of the mortuary

Relationships with companions:

Emmrich offers to introduce Bellara to Audric, the Necropolis librarian (who appeared in Tevinter Nights’ Down Among the Dead Men)

Emmrich and Davrin disagree on parenting methods. Emmrich thinks Davrin should better discipline Assan and teach him boundaries, while Davrin suggest Emmrich should let Manfred learn more on his own (e.g. let him fall so he learns how to get up) 

Emmrich turns to Neve when he needs help acquiring some reagents he can't get his hands through normal ones, and she agrees to help him out (smuggling is involved)

Emmrich isn’t too thrilled about Neve taking over the Threads, questioning of what’s going to become with the organisation and the future and thinking it may become corrupt (sort of mirroring the way Neve is apprehensive about his lichdom) 

Taash likes Emmrich’s lich helmet. They are not usually fond of skulls, but that helmet is fine because it’s on fire

Taash thinks that gemstones like amethyst or green opal would look good with the lich helmet

Emmrich doesn’t seem to like unrealistic books as he criticised Harding’s “Gore-Knight” novels for their incorrect interpretation of magic. He is worried about people misunderstanding magic and spirits

Emmrich calls himself Harding's 'de facto physician'

On Manfred: 

(If Rook chooses to save Treviso) Manfred brings Neve tea by his own volition. Emmrich thinks it's because Manfred sensed she might need a friend

Manfred is as aware of his surroundings as most people (to a certain degree)

(If revived at the Necropolis) Manfred learns to say Emmrich’s name 

(If revived at the Necropolis) Manfred becomes much more talkative 

Manfred likes boiling tea because he is fascinated by steam

There are spirits of Temperance and Diligence 

The Watchers avoid using the word “demon” because it creates bad expectations and can negatively influence spirits 

Some in the Mourn Watch suspected that elves originated from spirits, though it was just one of many theories, and not a particularly popular one

Chambers in the Necropolis can go missing (according to MW!Rook, they turn up, eventually)  

Even after the despair demon is banished from the Necropolis, the halls remain cold. However, the effects will abate with time

There are horses on display in the Necropolis

Watchers rarely get possessed thanks to the special wards of the Necropolis. Possessions also don’t happen as often because the necromancers already provide spirits with bodies, so they don't need to possess anyone by force

Bellara calls the background magic of Necropolis tidy and quiet

There something called “The Deep Necropolis” featuring sections like “The Unspoken Valley” and “The Charnel Bridge” (which has something called “nightmare fog”) that hosts all kinds of entities. Bellara is very excited to visit once the nightmare fog clears

Vorgoth ensures that the transgressions of those who use magical to cruel and abusive means will not be tolerated (whatever that means)

About Nevarra:

Many great Nevarran artefacts have been lost to time, including the Skull of Sabinar, the Key of Dead Dreamers, and the Crown of the Moon

There are strict rules about selling enchantments in Nevarra. You can’t sell anything without a licence and an inspection from the mage Circles

A Tevinter poem “Faustina's Song”, a romantic epic from the Steel Age, is very popular in Nevarra, and its quotes are used on ‘more than one’ epitaph in the Necropolis. Neve is surprised people even read it outside Tevinter

IDW's Fang the Hunter miniseries! All four issues are out now! I don't have as much to say about it as I did with the Knuckles show, but I do have some thoughts.

So! This is a pretty fun miniseries. I liked it.

It's fun to see Ian get to write a four-issue arc starring the Hooligans, his precious boys, with a B-plot showing Sonic and Tails' perspective on this little adventure. As always, Ian captures the characters' voices well. In particular, I really liked Bean in this, who despite being a slapstick screwball is actually a pretty perceptive guy. He often acts as sort of a voice of reason for Fang, seeing right through his sweet talking and pointing out how badly all of their schemes go but sticking around nonetheless just for funsies. And the art (illustrated this time by Mauro Fonseca for the first issue and Thomas Rothlisberger for the rest) is as good as we've come to expect from IDW's Classic Sonic output. Overall, this is a fun little romp that captures the vibes of the Classic era very well.

...But...

Well, as I've said before with the Amy and Tails anniversary specials, I feel like we're kind of seeing diminishing returns with these Classic spinoffs. They're fun, sure, and very nice to look at, but their writing always leave me wanting more.

A big part of this is just that there's just less to work with compared to the Modern universe. The Classic cast is much smaller, and within that cast there are a bunch of characters currently going unused, some of which are currently off-limits. Aside from the appearance of the Witchcarters in Tails' special, we've pretty much just stuck with the cast of Sonic Mania and the Hooligans, as established in the first special. No Chaotix, no Battle Bird Armada, barely any Honey. (Classic Vector was able to get a tiny cameo in the Amy special only because he was so obscured that it gave the IDW team plausible deniability to say it was actually a different character if Sega complained.) It's a very small box, and Ian's recent Classic comics haven't particularly expanded the boundaries of that box. They're just excuses to play the hits for old times' sake. And that was a lot of fun the first time around, but the novelty is starting to wear off for me.

I will admit, sure, the tighter focus on a specific set of characters from the games is a big part of the appeal of these Classic comics. They're simpler. They're nostalgic. They're shining the spotlight on characters that can't be used in the main series. They're the slavishly faithful old school Sonic comics that we could never get in the '90s, because the comics we did get diverged into their own continuities with tons of new characters. I get all that.

But the thing is, the Sonic comics have always added all those new characters because you can just do so much more with them. The game cast is great! But they're corporate mascots Sega keeps on a tight leash. You can do so much with a character like Sally or Surge that you could never do with any of the game characters, and by pushing into new territory with these new characters you can also bring out interesting new sides of the game cast. Maybe Sonic himself can't have some crazy complex character arc, but you can see how he'll respond to the things going on with these other characters, and how these other characters' arcs are informed by their relationships with Sonic.

So I look at the Fang miniseries, and I'm like. This was pretty fun. But by the end, what was the point of the story? What did we learn about the Hooligans as characters that we didn't already know? Is the point just to depict an adventure where things go off the rails a little and Bean and Bark end up a little miffed, explaining why they weren't with Fang in Superstars? There's potential for an arc there about the dissolution of the group, but it really does come off more as the type of spat these three probably get into all the time before coming back together for the next job. It's neither super dramatic nor super funny, feeling more like it ends on a fairly matter-of-fact note where Fang's like "welp, time to go do the events of Sonic Superstars" at the end, not particularly plussed by anything that happened in this arc. What we're left with is four issues of the Hooligans encountering recognizable characters and visiting recognizable locations from the Classic games, with little that really feels new or fresh here.

Ironically, the most interesting story element to me here (aside from Bean's characterization) is its tie to the main comics, something previous specials couldn't do since Sega had yet to reunify the Classic and Modern timelines. The plot of this comic revolves around Fang following the myth of the "eighth Chaos Emerald," riffing on both old playground rumors and Sonic the Fighters. What they actually end up finding isn't an extra Emerald, but rather the Warp Topaz that would eventually end up in Starline's possession in the Modern era, having apparently been found by the Hard-Boiled Heavies in the cave seen in the 900th Adventure special.

That's kinda neat, and the abilities of the Warp Topaz are used in fun ways. But this isn't exactly something to write home about for people who aren't lore nerds like me. There isn't a particularly meaningful connection between Fang and Starline's arcs here due to the presence of the Warp Topaz, it's just a thing for the wiki. Again, Ian's in his connect the dots mode a little more than I'd like here.

(...So wait, if Starline didn't find the Warp Topaz himself, did he track down the cave where the Heavies found it to leave that "greatness began here" graffiti? Eh, I guess that sounds like something he'd do. He's known for nothing if not his obsessiveness.)

So, again. This was a pretty good miniseries. This all makes it sound like I hated it, but I did like it overall. I particularly liked seeing the Hooligans fight the Hard-Boiled Heavies. But it leaves me feeling less fulfilled than something like Scrapnik Island or Tangle & Whisper or Imposter Syndrome. I get that, by the very definition of the word, Classic Sonic is always going to remain trapped in amber to some extent. This isn't the version of the franchise that's supposed to grow and change. That's what Modern Sonic does. Classic Sonic will always be trapped in the early '90s. I'm not asking for them to add a dozen new characters with complex dramatic arcs to the Classic comics, since that's not what Classic Sonic is about. But I think the other Classic Sonic stories not written by Ian - i.e. the driving school story by the McElroys and the two stories about Amy by Gale Galligan - show that you can tell fresh new Classic Sonic stories that aren't just about remixing the hits from the games.

If we're going to continue getting Classic Sonic comics from Ian (and I hope we do!), then I just hope he's able to find a better balance between familiar and new ideas, like he and Evan do so consistently with their Modern Sonic output.
