Valyrian Pantheon Headcanons

We know the names of 5 of the Valyrian gods and that's it. We don't know anything about the practices or even what those gods were patrons of. Here is my headcanon reconstruction of the pantheon ^_^

I think the Fourteen Flames (the volcanoes) are named for fourteen gods who constitute the main pantheon, similar to the 12 Greek Olympians or the 12 Roman Dei Consentes. There are many minor gods, usually personifications of concepts like seasons/emotions.

I imagine them like Egyptian gods, who are personified sometimes as humans, sometimes as animals, sometimes as animal-headed humanoids. I imagine the main fourteen as dragons, though idk how silly that would look lol.

I think they were also androgynous gods. Why? That's fun. That's so fun. Dragons are theorised to be hermaphroditic/intersex who can change their sex at will, but also are referred to as she-dragons if they are confirmed to lay clutches of eggs. So some of these gods are gods, and some are goddesses, despite being a-gender

Canonical Gods

BALERION: I believe Balerion's name is at least a little inspired by Ba'al, an ancient Semitic god who was very important to the religions of the region (Canaan, Babylon, etc) and features as a false god in the Hebrew bible. I think he's the King of the gods, like Zeus. God of war or fire or conquest or all of the above. Many ancient gods shifted their patronage and powers.

VHAGAR: Consort of Balerion, similar to Hera. Goddess of war/wisdom, similar to Athena. I think this fits a person like Visenya.

MERAXES: Perhaps a concubine of Balerion? Like how Zeus had thousands of lovers. Metis, Leto, Demeter, etcetera. Goddess of love, because Rhaenys seems like a woman who enjoyed love and life. Perhaps also a goddess of marriage?

SYRAX: It's gotta be someone Rhaenyra would think is cool. Perhaps a goddess of the sun/moon? Another war goddess? A queen? Actually, perhaps Syrax is the Hera of the pantheon, while Vhagar is not necessarily virginal like Athena but 'unmarried' so to speak. Goddess of beauty/wealth would also fit Rhaenyra. Goddess of the sun or moon would be fun in opposition to Sunfyre.

BOASH: called 'The Blind God' Mentioned as the god the Lorathi worship, whose religious followers (dissidents of the Valyrian Freehold) founded the city of Lorath. The name doesn't follow the typical Valyrian naming traditions, perhaps he was originally Boax/Boaxes? Would be fun. He's a very esoteric god connected to 'higher truths', the priests are eunuchs and the followers are vegetarian teetotalers and a main tenant is that everyone is equal. They also wear hair shirts which is an old Christian practice. I think he's a version of a Valyrian death god

the BLACK GOAT: Whose followers founded Qohor. I think he's a minor god, perhaps of magic or agriculture even, agricultural deities tend to be very important to common folk. However the goat imagery evokes Satan and Baphomet, so I think a villainous or death deity would be fun.

Non-canonical gods

A lot of the Targ dragons are given names with similar naming style to the canonical god dragons.

VERMITHOR & VERMAX: The naming conventions of Vermax and Vermithor intrigue me... I think one is the name of the God and one is a theophoric name in reference to the god. Perhaps a god of justice, law, order, etc, since they were the dragons of Jaehaerys and Jacaerys and I can see them picking that kind of God.

ARRAX: Lucerys names his dragon this, so I think a coming-of-age god or god of youths would be fun since he, yknow, got eated at 14.

CARAXES: This is Daemon's dragon so I'm saying Caraxes is the Dionysus/Hermes trickster god. Daemon picking the bacchanalian drunk sex god for his dragon is real to me.

MELEYS: Rhaenys TQWNW's dragon. Rhaenys gives off SUCH demeter vibes idk so agricultural god would be fun but idk i don't think she'd pick something like that. Perhaps its based off of Meraxes since Rhaenys is her namesake. Perhaps an oceanic or weather-based god.

MORGHUL: Morghul is simply the word for death in High Valyrian e.g. 'Valar Morghulis', but I like it as a euphemistic name for a God of death. Like his name is so tabboo that you just refer to him as death, or he's just named death in relation to afterlife, like how Hades refers to both the god and the underworld. I think perhaps Boash and the Black Goat are actually interpretations/aspects of the same deity, perhaps a death - morghul - god.

SHRYKOS: Sick name sorry just had to say that. He's Jaehaerys (son of Helaegon)'s dragon. got no clue what he could be a god of cos jaehaerys is a plot device character. I think he's just a cool Valyrian word, like Morghul, since Jaehaerys and Jaehaera are twins. Be fun if they picked life/death dichotomy for their dragons :p

TERRAX: ridden by the pre-doom character Jaenara Belaerys, who flew further south in Sothoryos than anyone else. God(dess) of travel/wisdom/conquest/oceans would be fun since she's a traveller who flew across oceans and sort of exemplifies the Valyrian conquest/adventurer spirit.

TESSARION: Okay the blue queen has to be a goddess of the ocean or the sky<3

TYRAXES: Joffrey's dragon :) I think a god of animals would be cute also cos he sounds like T-rex. I would name my dragon T-rex. Possibly a bastardisation of Terrax though...

URRAX: This is the name of a legendary/fairytale dragon from the story of Serwyn and Daeryssa from the Age of Heroes. By Daeryssa's naming convention and the fact she is mentioned only in AGOT, I think she was perhaps supposed to be a Targaryen before GRRM had established a full history. I think he's just a bastardisation of perhaps a Valyrian god like Arrax.

So my vision of the Valyrian pantheon includes Balerion, Vhagar, Meraxes, Syrax, Vermithor, Arrax, Caraxes, Terrax, Tessarion, which is 9 gods

plus Meleys and Tyraxes who I'm not sure if I want to be referring to above gods or just the name of a god entirely, which makes 11

Adding a death god (Boash, Black Goat, Moghul) makes 12,

which leaves another two unnamed for my personal idea of a Valyrian pantheon :)

have i ever told you all how wild i think it is that Kai has a fandom?

like, the fact that people are consuming my writing and enjoying it and INVESTING themselves in the story?

thats so fucking amazing to me

kai as a concept started when i was around 9, when i listened to my first batim fansong, “gospel of dismay” by DAGames. i attached to the bendy character so much, i created this character that acted as his daughter like the cringe little freak i was.

around the same time, i had listened to “why did i say okie-doki?” by the stupendium, and attached to the monika character in the same way.

as i grew, kai grew with me. her story slowly became an amalgamation of fandoms i enjoyed, all set in the town of unington (which i stole from “peggy suave”, a music series uploaded to youtube by sim gretina). there wasnt really an overarching plot, some angst scattered here and there, but in my head, it was a semi-episodic series that revolved around Kai and her friends, and her adventures as ‘the savior of the multiverse’.

it wasn’t till i started writing ‘showstopper’, a bnha x oc fic, and uploading it to wattpad in 2021 before i started seeing intrigue for kai and her story.

before that, kai only existed as comics in my sketchbook that i showed to friends, or nobody at all. i was into mha, and i didn’t like the insert character’s personality in most x readers, so i decided to write my own. with kai.

people loved kai. i had consistent readers, commenters, and as of now, it sits at 7.5K reads. people felt for her, kinned her, and slandered any characters who didn’t like her.

eventually, my interests faded. and showstopper remains unfinished.

other than showstopper, Kai still didn’t really have a bunch of deep lore. she still was her little fandom amalgam, with her bits of angst.

but that all changed when Hatchetfield came into the mix.

in mid 2023, early 2024, @local-soda-can (and @chillibeanos somewhat) introduced me to the starkid original musical, ‘the guy who didn’t like musicals’. they loved it, and so did chilli, as they had been doing some oc insert stuff with it (btw, go check them out, their character Bean Sprout is so awesome!,).

I, however, wasnt too keen on watching.

I’m a very hard person to get to watch anything with an hour+ runtime. longer time commitments spook me, and with TGWDLM being over an hour, i wasn’t planning on watching.

until we had a sleepover, and i did.

and i fell in LOVE.

immediately, i had me and fizz start rping through The ‘Kai’ Who Didn’t Like Musicals, as i dubbed it.

the rp finished on September 14, 2023 and that was that.

that was all TKWDLM was supposed to be.

that was all Kai In Hatchetfield was supposed to be.

a series of RPs with a friend.

that was, until, one fateful wednesday, September 20th, 2023, i was watching TGWDLM after school.

earlier, i had the RTC script printed out to read, and i had thought: ‘man. i wish i had the script for this show.’

and then i thought, ‘wait, i have a laptop! what if i just typed out/downloaded the script?’

and as i sat there, on my laptop, i had another thought.

‘Wait, i have the rp, that’s practically all in script format, it has almost all the parts, what if i just turned it into an actual script?’

and thus began a two month long journey of transcribing the musical/rp into a script.

when i uploaded TKWDLM to tumblr on November 27 of that year, i honestly wasn’t expecting people to actually read it.

of course, i had hoped people would!

but honestly, she was 130 pages, she was kinda cringe, and she was honestly just meant for me.

I did NOT expect fans.

I did not expect people like @androgynous-sack-of-flesh-3 (hi there!) to go through my blog, scrounging for every last drop of Kai I made

I did not expect people to invest themselves into Kai’s story, and cry at her death during the ending.

Most of all, I did not expect people wanting more.

The Kai in Hatchetfield series was supposed to end at TKWDLM. I wasn’t planning on transcribing the nmt rps I did with my friends. I wasn’t planning on doing more scripts.

Until one anon in my inbox made the brilliant pun:

‘Nightmare Kai-me.’

With that post, I uploaded a poll asking if people wanted to see an actual NMK series.

And to my surprise, people did.

And thus, I started writing.

And that was a catalyst.

From there, I have gained so many followers, so many fans, all wanting more of Kai.

I have people like @raspberrysmoon (hi pooks :3) theorizing about the overarching lore of nmk, and even writing their own fanfic series revolving Kai (shoutout to sotbaw!).

I have people invested.

I have people who want more.

And that is so shocking to me.

I never expected my silly little story to reach so many people.

I never expected people to be touched by it.

I never expected to make people feel.

And, honestly?

I can’t help but say thank you.

You all are the reason I keep writing.

You all are the reason I keep publishing Kai’s story.

Without you, there would be no nmk. There would be nothing more than a script sitting in my google docs, one that I’d eventually forget about.

All I can say is thank you.

Thank you for giving me a space to share my writing.

Obscured By Clouds (1972)

1. Obscured by Clouds

The synth intro here is really cool!! Along with the groovy drumbeat. And then the guitars kick in, making the song feel really cool and ominous! I’m already intrigued by this song and how the rest of the album is going to be! I love synths in rock songs, so this already sounds awesome! (Kind of reminds me Who’s Next by the Who, which also used synths extensively.)

2. When You’re In

Oooooo I love the transition here! The guitar riff here is really cool! Along with the keyboard and drums. Feels very epic! I’m already head banging. One of my favorites off this album!

 3. Burning Bridges

Ooooo the intro here is really cool! Especially the keyboard and guitar! And I really like the use of/switch of Rick’s and David’s voices! And then they harmonize beautifully! The guitar solo here is also lovely/very reminiscent of George Harrison’s playing. This feels like a song from the More album, along with the previous songs, but much more well done musically! You can hear they are more experienced here musically!

 4. The Gold It's In The...

Oooh I love the guitar and rock n roll/hard rock vibes here! It feels very groovy! This is exactly the kind of rock I really really like! The guitar solo is great and David’s voice here is as well. One of my personal favorite songs on this album. It has a great melody as well!  Kind of feels like something Led Zeppelin or any other 70s hard rock band would bring out.

 5. Wots Uh... the deal

The acoustic guitar is very lovely! The chorus here is also just really lovely! The melody is divine, and this song just has feel good vibes! Also very relaxing! The lyrics here are also particularly good! The harmonies also really add to the song! And then there’s pretty piano solos as well! Love me some piano solos from Rick!!! And the guitar solo here just adds to the vibes and is also reminiscent of George Harrison. Also one of my personal favorites from this album!

 6. Mudmen

Oooooo the synths here are really good as well as the piano (they really add to a dreamy atmosphere as if you’re in the clouds)! And I love the slow tempo here as well! Very relaxing and intimate feeling. The chord progression here is also so good!! And then we get a beat drop, which makes the song even cooler! Definitely reminds me of something from DSOTM! 

 7. Childhood’s End

The strings intro here is really beautiful and ominous!! And then we get the acoustic and electric guitars and the rest of the instruments! David’s voice is really good here, as is the melody! This song kind of reminds me of Have A Cigar! The improvisations here are also great!

 8. Free Four

The synths combined with the acoustic guitar are cool! I really like the contrast of the happy-sounding instrumental and really dark lyrics! I love deceptively happy songs a lot! Roger’s voice is also great! And then the electric guitar solos hit in the instrumental interludes!!! And make the songs even cooler! One of my personal favorites as well!

 9. Stay

The piano intro is already lovely!! The special effects/wah wah on the guitar are also cool! And Rick’s voice is also really lovely (as always)! The melody here is also so goood (and sounds like Shine On You Crazy Diamond)! The chorus here is especially good! One of my personal favorites as well!

 10. Absolutely Curtains 

Very cool ominous synth/keyboard intro!!! And also really lovely melody! Kind of reminds me of Aphex Twin/Kid A. and also of SOYCD. And then there’s a choir singing! It’s a cool idea, but it sounds really offkey and kind of bad and doesn’t fit with the song that well. 

 

In general, I think this album is pretty weak in comparison to Meddle, but I still liked it! I feel that this is just a much better version of More/did More‘s concepts better and just sounds so much better. There’s also many cool, underrated gems. I would listen to this again! It gives me an autumn vibe, tbh (Atom Heart Mother gives me spring vibes and Meddle Summer vibes, and this album gives me autumn vibes) Next up is the mythical album DSOTM! Since that album just has so much going on lyrically, I’m not going to touch on this album in that aspect since a lot of people already did it better and my thoughts would be way too long (way longer than my echoes thoughts), but I will try to include some lyrical stuff here and there :)

Apologies for the extremely long ask.

Omegaverse as a concept is so complicated and interesting as to me as a trans person.

On the one hand, the writer in me is intrigued by the world building implications and the opportunity to explore gender roles/dynamics. The concept of having a secondary dynamic alongside your actual gender is also fascinating to me and it's something I typically would have expected to be in something like sci-fi before I actually got into fanfiction.

I especially love deep diving into pack dynamics. Admittedly, that's where most of my interest and attention is focused on when reading and writing Omegaverse. I just find the concept so fascinating and any opportunity to write characters with heightened instincts, alien or otherwise, is just so much fun.

But on the other hand, I'm also very aware of how Omegaverse came about because some Supernatural fans wanted to play around with the idea of pack roles/relationships based on a messy study of wolf hierarchies. I'm also aware that intentional or not, a lot of early Omegaverse fics and tropes leaned really heavy into more homophobic and transphobic stereotypes, especially between M/M pairings.

I do feel like this has changed a bit over the years, though. From what I recall, a lot of early Omegaverse fics just really over relied on the stereotypical "which guy is really the girl?" trope that you saw a lot in the early to mid 2000s when discussions of queer (but mostly gay) relationships were brought up. I feel like the discussion has become a lot more nuanced since then and I know there are other trans fic writers like me who enjoy writing Omegaverse simply because it provides an opportunity to explore concepts of gender, sexuality and identity in a relatively fun way.

Not all Omegaverse fics/tropes are created equal, though. And every trans person has a different reaction/feeling towards this AU. I definitely feel like the odd one out, though, sometimes since I mostly come to Omegaverse for pack dynamics, less so for the smut (although I have written some in the past for fun or for friends). But I also believe there's validity in writing smut just for the purpose of enjoying smut.

Overall, I think this AU has a lot of potential, but I also see why it could make people very comfortable. I do wanna say that your fics haven't made uncomfortable and I do enjoy your takes on this trope. And I especially appreciate your willingness to listen to other trans people and their thoughts on Omegaverse. It goes a long way.

Side tangent: I will always be amused by how this whole trope came about btw, but also because the original author of that study followed it up by saying his first paper was absolute bullshit actually and shouldn't be viewed as a factual study of wolf pack hierarchy. Man messed up his original study, but he's a dedicated scientist and I love him for debunking his own work. But also the fact that he had an unintended impact on fandom is such fucking gold to me. I love this man so much.

Thank you for putting my thoughts to words, anon! There's definitely a long history there, and I agree with you that the genre itself has changed a lot in recent years, I think for the better.

I don't begrudge anyone for not liking or wanting to read a/b/o fics at all. I think it's intriguing but has the potential to be deeply uncomfortable or even like you said, transphobic for some people. I try to tag everything very well here that mentions it, etc.

I think what I like most about recent changes is that the genre has shifted to be less about "how can we get these two characters to breed?" and more to discussing pack dynamics, the implications of designations and gender roles, and building interesting biological rules and intricacies in an author-unique universe.

HP Rec Fest, Day 6

Day #6 from @hprecfest celebrates one of my recent favorites: unreliable narrator. Oh what a powerful and sexy narrative tool! We’re lucky to have many delicious fics with this element and I’ve been more and intrigued, especially when it comes with an open or ambiguous ending👨‍🍳😘 after years of loving neutral POVs and wanting unbiased closure in fic, now I can appreciate that sometimes it is fun and exciting not to know everything, not to mention that unreliable narrations usually provide fascinating character studies. I took this opportunity to highlight two (imo) underrated works with mature themes. Dead dove and underage might not be among the most popular preferences which in my book is all the more reason to give these brilliant works a shoutout. Very curious to see everyone else’s recs today!

Walk Right Through Me by @floydig (M, 2k) - dead dove do not eat

Every day, Harry drinks Polyjuice to disguise himself as he lives on the streets. Today, he observes a gaunt, shirtless Draco Malfoy walking around Knockturn Alley and is immediately drawn to him. However, sometimes the truth is much darker than what the mind perceives.

floyd is my go-to for all things dark and spooky so of course I was immediately lured into this short but poignant psychological thriller. as always the masterful tension building takes my breath (and sleep) away: I love the concept of polyjuice addiction and Harry’s pov is visceral and uncomfortable in its jaded tone. gosh what a fic, what an ending! so much story within 2k of pure genius writing

Rare pair

Possibly, Maybe by Curlee_Cue (E, 72k) - underage Harry/Scorpius

“A hand carefully brushed Scorpius’ hair out of his eyes and turned his head to face his rescuer. And of course, who else would it be, but Harry Potter? Once just an abstract legend, now his very own personal saviour.”

this was the first long Scarry fic I’ve read and it completely blew my mind. it checks so many of my boxes when it comes to exploring the so called “problematic” underage romance: an emotional rollercoaster with brilliant nuanced characterization, angsty slow burn, sexy and unapologetic smut. Scorpius’ POV in his teen and early adult years - bright, yearning and so very real - is a triumph, truly a masterpiece for those who enjoy coming of age stories

I was sweating for a moment there because I thought, “I’ve written all my life and even published, but I don’t have 5 fanfics, shit!”

And then I noticed… well, with a little bit of goodwill, I do. So thanks so much for asking, @stellerssong , and here comes the gushing:

The no. 1 has to be “The Light of Stars”.

I completed most of it during NaNoWriMo 2022 for a bit of fun and respite from other projects—and then did nothing with it. Until I thought, “Fuck it,” and started publishing it chapter by chapter, editing and tidying it up along the way.

It is a long fic, and I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m honestly proud of it. I put a lot of thought into characterisation and plot, keeping everyone in character (as much as aimed-for character development allowed, so certain OOC moments had to happen) and crafting an OC that works for what I was setting out to do. So much so that many people asked for a sequel, which I’m still in the process of writing (I completed the concept again last NaNoWriMo and wrote over 40,000 words back then, but progress has been slow since because… life).

I don’t want to give too much away here, but while it’s romance and there *is* more than enough sex (I write steamy romance professionally, albeit in my other language), this is really not what this one is mainly about. So it’s not one for people who look for thinly-disguised chapter-porn and super-explicit descriptions. It’s a novel with a fully developed arc, and it deals with topics like friendship, loss and grief. Someone told me though that it felt hopeful and they didn’t struggle with the broaching of those topics like in some other works, and that was probably the most wonderful thing anyone could ever have said to me.

I’ll choose “Snow Globes and Whisky” as my second, but only because it is a Christmas gift-type one-shot with the same characters.

You can, in theory, read it without knowing TLoS, but it just wouldn’t make sense. It’s just Christmas fluff, not incredibly deep (despite picking up on the friendship and loss-theme again), it was fun to write and to get Dream a little bit drunk (just because he was intrigued and allowed it of course 🤣).

Then there are Rachel and Johanna.

They have such a special place in my heart. I always wanted to tell their story because we never got it in the show—so I did. And as a bisexual woman, I am also Jo’s biggest stan. I desperately want her to be the Sandman-character who does away with bi-erasure once and for all (because if the onscreen love interest is female, everyone cheers, but bi m/f relationships never count in fandom because they’re “heteronormative”. Newsflash: We’re not “50% straight, 50% gay”. We have nuance and deep inner lives and different preferences that make up very personal identities, and we’re not some token queer representation that stops to exist once we’re in straight-passing relationships). We’ve seen her date a woman and she has tons of chemistry with Dream too—I want them to have the messiest affair ever and somehow have her take Thessaly’s place. But better. Because she’d protect Lyta for all the RIGHT reasons. There, I said it, and I’m not sorry. Anyway, that’s not what “As it Was Before the Otherness Came” is about. It’s sad and heartbreaking and canon-compliant. It just fills in the gaps. And again, I’m super-proud that someone in the comments said to tell Gaiman about it (we all know that’s not a thing for fanfic) because they thought it was so in character and well-written. Yes, I’m shamelessly blowing my own trumpet because you asked me to 🤣

Then there are my Inktober Haikus.

I still intend to turn them into a bound book with accompanying art one day (the latter is where it all falls down really because although I could, it would take me 1,000 years to create all the art myself). 31 poems, some more inspired than others, but they were a great creativity exercise, and I honestly love them for what they are.

And last but not least, from the serious to the totally unhinged: Muhulhu. Murphy and his Cool Hat. The crack ship of all crack ships, aka:

I set out to write a trilogy, the first part “By The Sea, I Mean In The Dreaming: A Comedy Prelude” is published, the second and third are currently in a vegetative state because I just can’t find the time to write and/or edit. And if I do, I prefer writing the TLoS sequel. Or metas. Or running silly fandom events 🤣 I’d love to write more fanfic, but between a full time job (or rather: three jobs that make up one) and a family, I just stare in awe at the people on here who produce constant output, because I honestly can’t. But I will get back to it eventually because that one is just sheer unhinged fun.

One of the things I like to do on Twitter is periodically post all of the stuff I've gotten from various crowdfunding and other Indie RPG sources. I am (apparently) a Kickstarter Superbacker, not in the sense of "Person who's constantly in the comments asking where something is", but in the sense of "Now that I've got some disposable income, I put a lot of it into the Indie and Small Press TTRPG scene."

This represents about 2-3 months of Crowdfunders coming to fruition and a couple of purchases from a couple of stores. Here's what's in the list (and a bit about why I'm hype for it!):

Arcon: The City of Neon Daylight - This year, I've getting into system agnostic setting guides. I recall hearing a lot about this one, because it set out to make a Cyberpunk setting that avoided some of the problematic tropes that tend to fall in with that aesthetic.

Public Guest 5 - It's an RPG on a poster! I was intrigued to see how it would play out, and really like the aesthetic. I have it framed and sitting behind my desk. Been thinking of working it into a (stalled) Ironsworn campaign to create an in-world artifact.

Die RPG - I'm admittedly a big Rowan, Rook and Deckard fanboy. I also read and enjoyed some of Kireon Gillen's work, and was intrigued by the team-up. Having since read the first 5 issues of the comic, I'm super into this whole thing. It seems like a really powerful skewering of some tropes in fantasy gaming, combined with an emotional intelligence that I'm really curious to dig into.

Anyone can Wear the Mask - I'm admittedly a big Jeff Stormer fanboy... (I was doing a bit, but honestly, he makes rad stuff. Check out Party of One asap). I loved Dee Pennyway's work on the system this is based on, and having heard a couple of playthroughs of this game, it's a must-have. Jumped on it as soon as it was available.

Scraps - Cesar Capacle's work in the scene is one-of-a-kind. I have yet to read it, but it bills itself as a crafting RPG with a hopeful streak, which I'm super intrigued by. I think I can learn a lot of design stuff from it, and I think it's going to just be a great game.

Derelict Delvers - Another Capacle banger idea. Again, got it in part because of the creator, but the concept is one I'm also intrigued by. Scrapping in space is something I've been more and more intrigued by. So, I'll have to make some time to get into this one.

The Vaults of Vaarn - I'm admittedly susceptible to peer pressure... I mean. Wait. No. I've heard really good, intriguing things about this, and Games Omnivorous has made a ton of really amazing, high-quality volumes that I guess I'm starting to collect? Lately, I've been getting a lot of Weird Sci-fi stuff, and I understand this is part of that world.

Broken Cities - I picked up another of Come Martin's works, Meanwhile, in the Subway, a little bit ago. It's an RPG printed on a subway map, that takes place in a weird public transit. This game takes place in the city that the transit serves. It's standalone, but I can't wait to see how they connect.

The Fall of Home - Zinequest is a rough month for me, because so many people make such rad stuff that I struggle to control my purchases (see, Superbacker, above). Fall of Home hit a lot of intriguing touchstones, and... well, I'm fascinated by a lot of things, but exploring ruins with a very personal touch just grabs me.

Rad-Hack - I've got a couple of other Skullfungus titles, and I keep hearing about the Black Hack. This was an impulse purchase on Lulu, where Cesar Capacle's books are printed, but I'm curious to see how close this skews to the Fallout series, and whether it's a better fit for my tastes than the Fallout RPG...

Spindlewheel - Honestly, when I backed this, I expected to get a beautiful, tarot-like set of cards to use as an oracle or for games of its own. I underestimated how beautiful this set was going to be. Gold-edged, they're shiny and printed on fantastic card stock. I've mostly stared at these things, I almost worry that if I play them too much I'll damage them.

Down we Go + Beneath the Necropolis - Backed this initially because I've been getting more embedded into the Plus One EXP community of late, and I think this is their flagship title. Having heard a couple of APs, and played around with the system a little, I'm super hyped to really dig into the system.

No Way to Make a Living - Early on in my time in the indie RPG scene, I recall hearing Sandy Pug Games talk about this book. A series of interviews with creators in the space, from huge names down to the more esoteric folks. When I heard this was being printed by Metal Weave Games, it became a Must-have. (Arcon was an impulse purchase to go along with it).

The Million Islands of Doom - I really love Snow's work in general, and again, setting guides are my go-to. It feels a lot like Zelda (a series that means so much to me, my therapist has told me to play more of it as therapy homework...), specifically Wind Waker, but with a more RPG-flavored world. I've skimmed it, but really want to dig in. I'm constantly trying to figure out how I'll pair this up with either Games Omnivorous' Bottled Sea, or Skullfungus' Isle of Ixx.

Dinocar - Dinoberry Press makes the raddest stuff. I nearly passed on this, but I do spend some time with some family friends whose kids are into dinosaurs, the parents are into RPGs, and I figure if we should start them early. Plus, the thought of building a city and sending dinos in cars through it? Yet another of my many jams.

On Twitter, because I kinda hate typing stuff on my phone, I don't really get this deep into why I'm hype for the stuff I get. This was kinda fun, though! Maybe I'll do it again in a couple of months.

Bonus, some other gaming and game-design stuff I've gotten

Thunder Road Vendetta - When I was a kid, a friend's family owned the original version of this game. I never played it, but always wanted to. I very loosely understood some of the components, and wanted to see how they fit together (why it took me to my mid-30s to get into game design, I'll never know). So, when Restoration Games announced a revamp, I was in. I've picked up a couple of their other titles, and they make good games.

Self Made Man - Several years ago, I went to visit a friend in Portland, ME. They had gotten really into the community for a local comic shop up there. Periodically, the owner (and some other folks in that community) make comics, like this one. I like to support them both because they're friends, and because their stuff is always fun.

The Affinity Designer Workbook - I didn't pick up the Affinity Publisher workbook when I first got Publisher, and kinda kicked myself when it fell out of print. When Affinity put out their 2.0 suite, I grabbed it, and Designer is the next on I want to learn, so when I saw it on Thriftbooks, I snagged a copy.

My hope is that these posts don't come off as anything other than me being hyped about all the really rad stuff that the Indie RPG and small press gaming scenes are coming up with. I try to give each of them a similar amount of hype, because there are some really cool designers toiling away in near obscurity, and they very much deserve to be mentioned in the same breaths as some of the bigger names.

Surrealism at Kosygin State University

On October 11, a lecture by artist Antonio Lebedef took place, leaving a profound impression. Antonio spoke about the history of surrealism and shared his experience through projects like "Animal Instinct" and "Still Lifes of Our Reality." From the very beginning, it was clear that we were about to experience something more than just a talk about art.

Honestly, I often attend lectures, and I dislike when speakers turn their presentations into self-promotion. When instead of discussing art or their experiences, they start excessively showcasing their success, my interest fades. However, Antonio found the perfect balance: he talked just enough about himself to intrigue us, to make us want to Google his work later or ask questions during the lecture. This approach immediately drew me in and made the talk feel engaging and lively.

After a brief introduction, Antonio seamlessly transitioned into the main topic—the history of surrealism. Even while discussing this artistic movement, it felt like we were still getting to know the unique personality of Antonio. His charisma and the vivid presence he brought to the stage only reinforced this feeling.

One of the highlights was his "Animal Instinct" project. Its scale—1,200 m²—and the fact that it’s painted on a rooftop in the heart of Moscow were simply astonishing. Learning that over 600 liters of paint were used, and that the project can be seen on Yandex.Maps, was a revelation. To me, this symbolized how an artist can bring their ideas to life in the real world.

I also appreciated how Antonio bridged the gap between classical surrealist artists and modern concepts like glitch art. It was particularly fascinating how he smoothly transitioned from discussing Salvador Dalí’s paintings to the idea of glitch, drawing unexpected parallels between these movements.

It’s hard to put into words all the emotions and aesthetic pleasure I experienced at the "Discover Your Superreality" lecture. It wasn’t just a lecture—it was an immersive journey into the world of art and deeper meanings. By the end, I truly felt that I had, in a way, discovered my own "superreality," realizing the boundless potential of my mind, my imagination, and my own surrealism.

And finally, I want to end with Antonio Lebedef’s own words: "In the chaos of colors, the harmony of meanings is born." And that’s exactly what glitch surrealism is all about.

How I got "accidentally" collared by my Master

Unit 04: Nature Interpretation through Art and Planning for “All” Scenarios

Hey Everyone,

Interpreting nature through art is a difficult task to do. Beck et al. (2018) talks about interpretive theater and how many parks offer this way of representing nature. By engaging with the public in a different way that speaks to them. Theater can better explain the wonders within their park. By using bright colour, good actors, relating it back to topics of interest or scientific topics such as climate change people become intrigued by the show. An example was provided by Beck in which he explains that a New York company received a three-year grant to focus on the complexity of climate change (Beck et al., 2018). Other ways include music and dance. This is a way to touch people emotions by seeing the beauty from within. As well visual arts are used in art museums to manage tensions and confusions (Beck et al., 2018).  

I personally lack these skills in art as I never really focused much on it throughout my education however my sister is an artist currently working in visuals art and she has explained some of the techniques she uses and there is so much more to it then I ever knew. Its complexity and ways of representing certain aspects and focussing on certain areas of her paintings is interesting when someone can explain it to you. Furthermore, Beck et al. (2018) talked about Maslow’s concept of basic needs and growth needs. I already have my basic needs taken care of and would like to focus on my growth needs specifically self-actualization. Maslow says that self-actualization is “moments of highest happiness”. To achieve this, I believe I need to focus my on the art of interpretation and how to represent it in a way that speaks to as many people as possible.  

I would interpret “the gift of beauty” through my senses. As we talked about in last week’s blog post I have the privilege to have all five of my senses all of which work very well. As well in my week two blog post I learnt that I am a tactile and visual learner. I interpret beauty through experiences and by seeing nature take place. When I go on nature walks or to protected areas walking around and asking questions helps me understand what it is I am experiencing. Everyone interprets “the gift of beauty” differently and as talked about in Beck et al. (2018) if you have a better understanding of unique features such as knowing where to see rare birds or knowing about geological features you will interpret its beauty differently than from someone who lacks these skills. I believe I still have much to learn but seeing how landscapes form, how crops grow, the progression of life intrigues me. Using my senses to experience these wonders and ask questions and to look for answers allows myself to interpret the beauty of nature around me. Beck et al. (2018) mentions the Lakota phrase, mitakuye oyasin meaning “all things connected". This phrase shows us that beauty is all around and connected it’s just a matter of deciphering what that beauty means to you and how you interpret it.

The comic timing, the intriguing differences between the characters' family background, the phantom expectations and the bitter realities. A must read!!!!

After the announcement of your little sister tying knot with the love of her life, you realize that it's high time for you to break ties with your fuckbuddy Jungkook, and finally get settled down with someone more of a husband material guy. But it's unfair for Jungkook for two reasons: one, you're a doctor, and two, will he ever find a pussy that bomb?

Dude, no review will ever be able to describe how PERFECT this fic is. I've never ever seen such a perfect fuckboy characterization written for Jungkook. He's perfectly sweet, stupid, sexy and dude, his comic timing just when the OC's practicality begins to empower him, oh lord. My favorite. Period.

Animal (m) by @cutaepatootie (a, f, d) [boxer, hate-to-love]

Lying on a hospital bed in his 60s, Jungkook recounts his past life. The one where his ruthlessness, his recklessness, his rudeness, every negative aspect of his life, was brightened with the solitary feeling of love. The love, which he had for you.

If I ever try to write a single word about this fic in its appreciation, I just end up crying a flood of tears. Be ready to have a box of tissue beside you before reading this masterpiece. A touching tale of love, hate and grief. A must read.

Let Me Stay Close To You by @9uk (a, d) [bullying, college-life]

When your high-school bully Jungkook re-enters your life as your college mate AND your partner for project, you cannot help but fear his intentions. But for Jungkook, it's all different. A drastic difference that makes his heart pace faster than the light's speed.

This fic is the far-most gut wrenching story portraying Jungkook in a not-so-typical setting and shade. Even though the ending of the fic somewhat falls out and becomes exhausting, it is still virtuous in its glory. A good take with a new perspective.

Knife's Edge (m) by @readyplayerhobi (a, f, d) [mafia, infidelity] ft. Jimin

Ever since your scarred childhood, you have known about your marriage with Jungkook in future, with you leading a life in a hellhole forever. And you're alright since you've got Jungkook beside you. But one night, everything changes when you end up laying your eyes upon Jimin, who promises comfort and love upon his arrival.

I know. Jimin is my bias, I should be rooting for him but oh lord, the mafia!jungkook takes it all for me to fuck the shit outta OC for going astray, dude. I'm speechless, so no words. Just dive right in!!

Falling Skies (m) by @fortunexkookie (a, f, d) [childhood friends]

The art of permanence isn't your cup of tea; despite that, your best friend, Ji-yeon and her twin brother, Jungkook, are irreplaceable to you. Ji-yeon, garnering all your love and Jungkook, garnering all your annoyance. You cannot endure Jungkook, that's for sure. But one unexpected catastrophe it takes, for you to realize what Jungkook is to you in a true sense.

The twin thing concept was very new to me, and reading this fic reminded of Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami, both focusing on loss, emptiness, love, coping and the following hardships. One of the best fics I've read. A must read.

You have been through every phase and feeling of your life with Jungkook: enemies, friends and best friend forever. Too bad, and too late, you ended up catching feelings for him when he had already committed himself to someone who's not you.

Innocence (m) by @monoguk (a, h, f) [one sided love, fuckboy]

For you, the concept of sex is flabbergasting but for Jungkook, that is the only thing his world revolves about. But once he falls for you innocence, nothing even as impeccable as sex can enamor him anymore.

It's not completed yet but dude, have not fallen in love with the simple and cute dynamics of it? A must read!!!!

True Care (m) by @joonsgalaxy (a, h, d, f) [bodyguard, family issues]

Your new bodyguard, Jungkook is no way similar to your father's bodyguard. He's young, cute (did I say hot?) and shy. Two of you together navigate through the hardships of each other's life and create a bond, safeguarding each other from one inevitable thing: love.

Oh lord, this one fic stays in my heart forever. The accurate representation of the very Jungkook we know. How delightful! Moreover, I just loved the way the OC was written: bold, practical and sensitive. Just dive right in!!

The Brothel (m) by @plumblackjeon (a, d) [unrequited love, rich kid]

In the eyes of society, Jeon Jungkook is a typical rich brat, spending his nights in brothels, getting wasted. But when you find him intoxicated in the corridor of your apartment, you can't help but find his true self, even if that means wandering into the brothel.

I don't know if this fic was supposed to be a one shot, but it snapped something in me. I've never felt so gut-wrenched after reading a fic. It made me rethink a lot about my opinions and ideas about the nightlife. It also gave me glimpses of After Dark by Haruki Murakami and reminded me of a song named lovememore. by dosii.

Astonishing and dark, a must read.
