Leak day is approaching, how we feeling?
I’ve had this bouncing around my drafts for a little while, a little idea that hooked itself into my mind. Who’s up for some BKDK Healing/Recovery Arc fluff??
I'm still deeply hoping for some slower, softer chapters to follow this VERY INTENSE war arc. I know a lot of ideas out there are operating under the concept of the boys healing TOGETHER in a hospital room, but like hear me out...
What if they start out at the hospital SEPERATELY and have to agonizingly wait until they’re better healed before they see each other? What if they can’t stand to wait any longer?
Spoilers for like...chapter 285 and beyond.
The nurses at the hospital had of course heard of Katsuki Bakugou, the boy who’d won the broadcasted UA Sports Festival. They had an inkling of the student’s more...aggressive tendencies. They steeled themselves for a potentially frustrating time managing and healing the reactive teenager.
The Doctors had done their best with his wounds in surgery as soon as he was admitted, got him stable with some much-needed blood transfusions, and sent him to rest and recover under the watch of a handful of night shift nurses. He was expected to wake sometime in the morning.
And yet, it was still the deep dark of night, when a tell-tale yell erupted from within the room with his name scribbled hastily onto the nameplate.
By the time the closest nurse turned the corner into the room, Katsuki was already pushing himself up with his good arm. Gritting his teeth, he swore aloud as stars popped in his blurry vision...but persisted in trying to lever himself out of bed. IV lines swung and tugged dangerously as he struggled.
The nurse rushed to the bedside as he tried to lean out the bed, but swayed from the vertigo. Pain exploded in his wounds, it felt like white hot coals had been dumped right into his gut and his left side.
“Young man, you need to lay down for now, your wounds..!”
“D-don’t tell me what to do!” Katsuki growled, in almost a feral state. Despite the drugs in his system, he was still in survival mode. His crimson eyes landed on her, still unfocused, delirious.
“Deku--Where...” He demanded again, voice cracking in desperation, still supported on one violently shaking arm. He squinted and blinked frantically; Why couldn’t he see straight??
The nurse grasped his good shoulder and eased the student back down into bed. Katsuki’s strong frame was resistant, but weakened by his injuries and lack of stamina. Even his willpower wavered with his consciousness.
“We can talk in the morning,” She assured in a calming voice. “But you need to sleep now, and stay put.”
Katsuki’s back connected again with the hospital bed, and it felt to him like it was grabbing him, keeping him there, and pulling him down into some dense fog. As his mind quickly began to drift, he wondered if the woman above him had some sort of sleep-aid Quirk. He blinked at the ceiling tiles and dimmed lights above, as the nurse adjusted his dosage, checked his IV, and logged notes on his condition. Another nurse hurried in, and they spoke quietly.
“What the hell...” Katsuki trailed off.
Both nurses flitted from the room, and Katsuki was alone in the darkness as it swallowed him.
“...De...ku...”
---
Katsuki didn’t have any idea how long it was that he was asleep. But as his eyes tried to flutter open again, they were met with soft light. And a silence that was almost jarring, after the battle, and after the frantic nightmares.
Nightmares...Aerial battles, explosions of green light...bursts of red....Black obsidian tendrils tearing through the air...
With a turn of his stomach, his eyes suddenly shot open, once again looking at a hospital room ceiling. Daylight was filtered out by thick curtains, and not far away, his parents seemed to have been keeping a vigil, each occupying a chair, leaning against each other in slumber.
His sight became a bit more focused and adjusted to the light, but his breathing intensified. He looked to his other side, and found he was in a private room. The door was shut at the moment; he was boxed in.
A flash of green energy played across his mind again....And a sick, charred hand that had reached out...
He felt a pain blossom in his abdomen as his breathing continued to spike.
He heard Deku’s yells in his mind again, and he once more felt the intense need to get up. His unrestricted hand clamped around the guards on the side of the bed, hoping for an anchor. Gritting his teeth against the fire in his gut, he tried to pull himself forward
“Hey...Hey!” He tried to yell, but it came out so hoarse, he growled and forced more of his pained breath into it. “Old hag!”
Mitsuki blinked awake, and jumped to see Katsuki staring back at her. Masaru awoke as well. and breathed a sigh of relief. Something twinkled in his son’s eyes that he was certain he’d never seen there before.
“Katsuki! Sit back down!! You’ll reopen your wounds!!” Mitsuki yells, surging to her feet.
“Don’t give a shit! Where the Hell is he?” Katsuki raged, once again pushing up with his good arm. His chest shuddered with hyperventilating breaths, and he felt as if it was threatening to tear him back apart. “Deku...Where’s Deku!”
“Deku?” His father asked, a bit confused.
“...Inko’s boy?” Mitsuki supplied, looking at Masaru as well. “Inko came to the hospital too, but...We haven’t seen her.”
“Dammit!!” Katsuki practically yelled, and tossed a venomous look towards the door. His fingers flexed with an overwhelming urge to blow the damn thing off its hinges. “What about All Might?? Or Half and Half, or fucking anyone who knows what the fuck’s going on?!”
“You settle the Hell down, brat, or I’ll make you!” Mitsuki loomed over him, a hand clamped tightly on the top of his head and forcing him back against his pillows. Katsuki glared at her, teeth bared and nostrils flaring, absolutely hating how weak he was to resist. “You’re damn lucky that whatever it was didn’t hit anything vital, but you almost bled out on the battlefield! You’re not going anywhere!! Don’t be a damn idiot!”
Katsuki tuned the rest of her words out. He was pretty sure she was turning to his father and going off on just how fucked this entire mission was, the insanity of putting teenagers who were clearly unprepared for the level of destruction that was involved...How none of them seemed to be properly informed of what the kids had been getting into.
They might have been discussing the prospect of Katsuki even going back to U.A. at this point, but he didn’t care. He couldn’t muster up a single iota of a crap to give over that right now.
He stared past his parents, at that damned door, waiting. Waiting with clenched fists, once again confined to laying against his uncomfortable pillows. His wounds were still too painful to move even if he wanted to. While somewhere out there...
Deku was somewhere out in that hospital, condition unknown. Red eyes glinted with moisture.
Come on.
Someone. Anyone. Come through that damn door...
He couldn’t believe how damn desperate he felt.
Tell me he’s safe.
---
Katsuki was loathe to comply with any procedures and check ups the nurses had to run on him for the days to follow. He grew more and more aggravated the longer it went on, the more they told him to wait. It was a developing situation, and there were so, so many civilians and Heroes in the hospital from that battle, the nurses didn’t have any time to prioritize seeking out any information on Izuku’s condition for him.
He crossed in and out of sleep all day and night. He couldn’t control it, between the pain and the meds, and even the sheer boredom of not having anything to do but agonize. He could only logically badger his parents so much concerning information he knew they didn’t have.
Sometimes sleep was a relief. A chance to pass time without thinking so deeply about everything.
Sometimes, it just gave him more nightmares and stress, and woke him with another hit of desperation to find closure for the battle he’d survived, confirmation that his best friends had made it out alive too.
News finally came when he woke up early in the next morning.
All Might appeared in the door way with eyes that seemed more cast in shadow than usual. Katsuki’s crimson eyes locked him and he immediately tried once more to pull himself up and forward. After the initial establishing conversation, All Might pleaded for privacy from his parents with a deep bow, and as they left the room, All Might drew himself back up. Blue eyes couldn’t quite meet Katuski’s.
“Start talking.” Katsuki grunted, and All Might pulled up a chair.
---
Izuku was lost in a long dream.
He was trying desperately to find the Vestiges again... He either couldn’t reach them, or...they were gone for good. He couldn’t quite remember, and the answer was so slippery it kept evading him.
Sometimes he would be minutely aware of what was going on around him in the physical world. Doctors. Nurses. Probes, needles, foreign hands.
Recovery Girl’s voice...Mom’s voice.
On the other hand, Nana’s voice. The First. Tomura Shigaraki. All For One.
He couldn’t quite grasp either side, and would be pulled once again into the dreams. It was as if he were stuck on a dizzying pendulum.
He gave in and floated for a while.
---
Hours passed, and little changed for Izuku. But as he seemed to surface back into the world, bits and pieces came back and fell into place in his mind. All of the things that had transpired. His slumbering mind could begin to process it, and make sense of it. Little by little.
By the time emerald eyes cracked open, Izuku had realized, he must have been asleep for quite some time. He had enough experience to recognize that he’d landed in the hospital, but felt powerless to assess how bad it was. He still felt hauntingly unattached to any of his limbs for the time being, no strength left to attempt to move them. He must have been heavily drugged by this point.
He wondered about Shigaraki, if he was also reduced to a quasi-sense of being, forced to lay low, let his mangled body regenerate. He prayed that the villain would be in such a phase for a while. Izuku knew there was no way he, or any of the heroes, could handle a rematch. Maybe not for quite a while, even.
A fleeting thought, however, as it was quickly overtaken by an urgent need to know the outcomes of so many....too many, of his friends, teachers and allies. Civilians, even. Aizawa, Gran Torino, Endeavour, all injured in battle. Shoto, his dear friend, and....
Kacchan.
The realization made a spike of anxiety lance through his chest like a knife.
Dear god, Kacchan. Was he...
“Ka...cchan--” Deku murmured, suddenly, feeling the tears pooling in his eyes. His poor mother, keeping a vigil by his side, leapt up and pressed a soft hand to his forehead, quivering voice crying with encouragement for her son.
“Mom, he...” Izuku whimpered, finally focusing on something for the first time, in his mother’s eyes. “Kacchan...The others...I couldn’t...”
As quickly as it had come, his resolve was gone, and his broken body wracked with sobs. His determination that had held him through the battle before losing consciousness, the rage, the adrenaline, was gone, and all that remained was the heartache that came from such destruction, from seeing his mentors and friends torn down one by one.
The image of blood suspended in air, and a shadow of a figure falling towards the Earth, stained his vision.
---
Days into Katsuki’s stay at the hospital, All Might visited again. The man still had so many new lines on his face, though he was heartened to see Katsuki, determined as he was, recovering and gaining focus quickly. Though with the focus, came that trademark, Bakugou impatience.
“He’s still in surgery!?” Katsuki yelled.
“More like, in and out of Surgery. They can only do so much at one time, even Recovery Girl could barely work with him, his stamina is almost non-existent right now...” All Might sighed. “And, there’s no shortage of other patients for her, unfortunately.” He said sadly, sipping a cup of tea with a white knuckled grip.
“That bad, huh.” Katsuki sneered, looking away from the man. Softly, he muttered, “Fuckin’ Deku.”
All Might smiled a deeply sad smile.
It had sounded spiteful, to the untrained ear, but by now, he could recognize how deep Katsuki’s concern really went.
---
One week after the incident at Jakku found Katsuki well enough to finally feel the cold tile beneath his bare feet again. Short walks were in order, as he was allowed to pace in his room every once in a while. The taste of regained autonomy was amazing, but he still felt the need to rest after very short walks, the wounds in his core still on the mend. Steps were small, and few, but Katsuki was feeling better for the improvement.
He leaned against the edge of his bed, muscles still stiff. Left arm in a sling, and right hand gently set on his stomach, he breathed deeply as he was able, assessing what his body was telling him.
He was gradually getting better, and the next goal was finally heading out that door. Fierce red eyes could have shattered the wood of the door, now left open just a crack. They couldn’t keep him in here forever.
---
“Good news,” All Might had told him, looking a little brighter. “They’ve moved Young Midoriya to the recovery ward. They’ve done everything they can for the boy, now all that’s left is to see how his limbs heal.”
Finally, Katsuki had thought. He was getting tired of waiting for the nerd to recover.
He scowled as he stalked out that door, and into the hospital hallway. His mended wounds still throbbed with each tender step, but the pain was becoming more and more dull everyday. He was itching to be able to get into physical therapy, and recuperate his body back into peak condition.
The ache in his shoulder gave him the most unease...His arms and shoulders needed to be up to taking the brunt of his Quirk. There was no time to lose in recovering those tissues, and he locked away any fears of never living up to his previous output, never being able to surpass it...He just couldn’t think of that right now.
Slippers scuffed against clean linoleum. Around the corner and nine doors down, All Might had said. He rounded the corner, and came, abruptly, to a stop, all inner thoughts ceasing. Crimson eyes had fallen on a figure ahead of him, and locked, his jaw dropping just slightly.
There before him, clearly in a state of dizziness, was Izuku himself. Of course, he seemed to be muttering to himself, staring intently at the name plates of each room he was passing.
Their eyes met.
His arms were bound up in thick casts once again, and in slings over his stomach, and bandages covered almost his entire torso in lieu of any shirt. Izuku stared back, large emerald eyes tired and glistening. He seemed to tremble at the sight of Katsuki, and the moisture in his eyes threatened to over flow.
“K-Kacchan,” He whimpered, blinking back the sudden tears, unable to wipe them away.
Katsuki's body suddenly unlocked, and he marched up on the other boy, as hard and as fast as his body would permit.
“What the fuck, Deku?!” Katsuki scolded. He planted a palm on the top of Izuku’s green head of hair, tilting his tear-stained face up to look at him. “Damn nerd, What the Hell are you doing out of bed?!”
“Kacchan,” Izuku sniffed, staring up into crimson eyes without an ounce of restraint on his emotions. “Y-you’re out of bed too...Are you okay?”
Katsuki twitched at the question, a reflex reaction now due to long years of rejection to the nerd’s selfless worries.
“Don’t you switch this around! I’m not the one who just got out of surgery!” Katsuki barked, ignorant to any stares from passersby they were drawing. “You shouldn’t be able to move, dammit!!”
“It’s okay, I mean, my legs feel totally fine!” Izuku argued weakly, even as his legs seemed to quiver just slightly beneath him. For the first time in the exchange, a hint of a dismissive, but pained grin tugged at his lips. There was still a very visible split on his bottom lip.
“That’s not the point, you--!!” Bakugou growled behind gritted teeth, fingers twitching impulsively under the messy nest of hair. How was he ever going to get through that thick skull of Deku’s??
“Please, Kacchan,” Izuku urged, “I know, I shouldn’t be out here yet, but I had to know for sure....that you were ok...I thought I’d really lost you...” He was beginning to choke on his words.
“They told you I was fine, so why go out of your damn way?! Why get outta bed when you can barely stand up straight, huh??” Katsuki retorted.
“I’m not explaining how much more it’d hurt if you were gone!” Izuku cried, and raised his head against Katsuki’s hand, cheeks flushed. He shook his head just gently, feeling a headache blossoming. “It’s not logical, I was...I was afraid, okay?! I have nightmares every time I close my eyes, telling me that Shigaraki kill-... took you away, or Todoroki wasn’t able to help you in time. It keeps replaying in my mind, and...And if it hadn’t been for me...”
He was gulping in air at this point, the words themselves seeming to scar him as he acknowledged their effect on him. Katsuki was unsurprised by the tears flowing anew, but something about the tremor in Izuku’s voice, shook him.
“I had to see you. And if my legs would work, then...There’s no way I could stop myself.” Although tired, his eyes glinted with that stubborn edge. It was the same, almost scared look of determination that had looked at him in the dark hallways of their first training exercise all those months ago...The first time they’d fought.
Wide crimson eyes held steady, and he noticed the shadows under the boy’s eyes, shadows of bruises that lingered against his freckles.
The hand that was on Izuku’s head suddenly shifted to the back of his head and he pulled gently, until Izuku’s forehead connected with Katsuki’s uninjured shoulder. Katsuki’s strong arm almost cradled him there in a half-embrace. A moment’s hesitation, and then his fingers curled around the deep, unruly green locks. Not to hurt, or threaten, never again...
“Idiot... Idiot. How the fuck do you think I feel?!” Katsuki muttered shakily against Izuku’s bowed head, his features furrowing. “Don’t you ever...fight like that again.” He bit his lip ferociously as it quivered, before any more words could spill out.
Izuku felt tense for a moment, adjusting to this strange new reality. In time, he eased, leaning into Katsuki’s offered shoulder, feeling the warmth of the arm curled around him. He felt a pang of guilt for being so overjoyed that Katsuki was here with him when so much had been lost...And another wave of surprise and contemplation as Katsuki’s words pinged around in his head. Even so, he dared to smile a broken smile into Katsuki’s shoulder, where no one in the world could see.
He only wished that his own hands were free so he could reciprocate the gentle gesture that was so exceedingly rare from the blonde, but so comforting.
Katsuki grimaced, but made no objection when tears began to soak the fabric of his shirt. The weight and the warmth of Izuku’s head against him was oddly comforting to him. A quivering sigh of relief escaped him, his cheek buried in green curls.
Reluctantly, the thought dawned on him; This is okay. Whatever this is...was worth the damn wait.
Turns out the wait was actually much, much longer than the time spent in the hospital.

*BONUS* owo
I DID happen to doodle the moment that really locked this into my mind and made me have to write this; I literally drew these at slow moments at work on receipt paper. (scanned a tad bit out of chrono. order though)
ALSO A NOTE:
I happened to fixate on this idea of Kacchan always grabbing Deku by the head(there was a post with a lot of this floating around not too long ago) and I’m convinced it’s part of his own unique language. You may have noticed, I threw in the little detail of contrast with how his mother in fact does the same thing, but forcefully, and exerting dominance over her son. Kacchan uses it this time to communicate with Deku, but it ends up being more gentle and as a comfort.
YES PARELELLS.
If I ever have time and inclination, I would love to redo these little doodles, honestly = u =
ANYWAY thank you if you’ve made it this far, I hope you liked :D

Aurora
Part ten: Aurora
Summary: Baby girl Matthews is born
Author’s Note: Well here it is! The final chapter. The Finale, the grand daddy if you will. I’ve finished my thesis, my brain was a little clearer and the votes were in! I was surprised by how close it actually was but Aurora was the winner! I thought both names were beautiful so I was happy either way but I kind of agree that this one seemed to fit a little better -- so good on all of you! Anyway, it’s going to be quite long to tie up a couple story lines and hopefully leave everyone satisfied. Enjoy!!
P.S.: I almost cried like three times when I was writing this… so, take that as you will.
P.P.S.: I want to stress that I don’t know anything about pregnancy or childbirth so none of the information/timelines are like legitimately accurate. I did some research but it’s far from being factual from what would actually happen.
Warning: I’ll put a trigger warning here just in case for talk of abuse and pregnancy complications/stillbirth, birth, swearing, fluff? Love/hard fluff at the end, I’m sorry! I had to add in some angst!! For old times sake!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You thought you could handle pain pretty well. You’d had enough of it in your lifetime to understand how to handle it. But there was a difference between being lashed and whipped and your body preparing itself to push a baby out of your vagina.
“How are you doing sweetie?” Christina said as she slowly walked in the room with Patty right behind her
“Oh you know…” you glared at them, “I’ve had better days”
“Auston says it’s almost time though” Patty smiled
“I can’t do it anymore,” you whined, forcing your head back against the pillows, “I thought I could handle the pain but I can’t. I feel like my insides are being torn apart and everything is on fire. I need the nurse or the doctor…”
“You’ll be fine, here, we’ll get the nurse,” Christina added sympathetically, “you’re gonna be a Mommy.” You returned the smile she gave you before another contraction consumed you and the nurse walked in, Mitch and Stephanie trailing shortly behind her
“How are you feeling (Y/N)?” Your doctor asked as she came to the side of the bed
“Give me the drugs,” you shouted desperately, jerking your head when you heard Mitch giggle, “this is not the time Marner. You wanna giggle, do it on your own time and you best make sure it’s not about me because I’m in a lot of fucking pain right now and I am irritated and I am not afraid to throw you through a window!” Mitch’s eyes grew wide, his skin pale, and you went back to the doctor to see if she’d subdue your pain
“I can see where you’re at but I’m sorry dear, it might be too late for the epidural”
“Are you telling me you can’t take this excruciating pain away? That I’ll have to feel everything?!”
“If you’re fully dilated, we’ll have to take you into delivery and there’s nothing I can do. I’m sorry (Y/N)...”
“Where’s Auston?” you asked the group, everyone shaking their heads and looking around the room, “GET ME THE FUCKING FATHER OF MY CHILD!!!!”
“I’m here baby, I’m here,” he said, sliding into the room and finding his place at your side, “I was just getting you some ice chips” he smiled at you gently and you gave him a small smile in return
“Aww, that’s so sweet, isn’t he sweet? aww thank you for the ice chips baby,” you said before throwing the cup of ice across the room, “I don’t want anymore fucking ice chips. I don’t want your sweet words either Matthews! I want everyone in this room gone, I want the doctor to tell me I can take the epidural so I don’t have to deliver this baby in pain, or anymore pain than necessary, I want you to understand how much I fucking hate you right now! For doing this to me. I hope you’re happy. You wanted a daughter, you wanted a precious baby girl? Well fuck you!” You watched as everyone scattered out of the room, presumably into the waiting area, before your eyes focused back on Auston who looked terrified of you
“Okay babe, deep breaths, remember the classes we took” he tried but you just growled at him
“It looks like you’re still at nine centimetres, so I can grab the anesthesiologist to give you the epidural” your doctor announced, hurrying as to not upset you but not before you started to cry
“I’m sorry Auston,” you sobbed, “I just.. I just.. It hurts so bad and I don’t think I can do this… I thought I could but I can’t. I just want it to be over”
“I know baby and it will be, just a little bit longer. We’re so close, but we just have to decide on a name. Okay? that’ll keep us busy,” he said, sitting down and smoothing the hair off your face, “I love you so much (Y/N)”
“Can you do this for me?” you joked, tears still streaming down your face
“No sweetheart, I wish I could,” he smiled, pressing a kiss to your forehead, “I wish I could take this pain from you but this is something you have to do. And you’re going to be so amazing, I know it. Because you’re amazing everyday and this little girl, she’s going to be just like her mama. Strong and stubborn and powerful and amazing. For the rest of her life”
“Don’t do that” you cried
“What?” Auston asked, confused
“Don’t put that pressure on her,” you complained, eyes held tightly together as your lip quivered, “she’s not even here yet. Let her make her own mistakes and her own choices. If she’s not amazing, then that’s okay. But you have to love her anyways!”
“Of course I will. She’ll be amazing no matter what,” he replied, noting that you were probably getting delirious from the pain and lack of sleep, “did you decide on a name?” Just as she was about to answer, the anesthesiologist came in and prepared you for the needle. Once you got the epidural, you were a much more pleasant person to deal with and you welcomed guests in as they greeted you, asking about a name and how you were feeling and lying about how “good” you looked. Your contractions were getting closer and closer together but thankfully the epidural seemed to lessen the pain enough for you to talk to Auston’s parents calmly and sweetly.
“Thank you so much” you smiled, clearly delirious from the long hours at the hospital, “for being here. You didn’t have to come, it’s nice that you’re here and I really appreciate it, but you didn’t have to be here. But thank you.” Ema and Brian gave each other a quick glance and laughed at your ramblings
“We wouldn’t miss this for the world, girlie,” Brian said softly, “we love you”
“So much, Mija” Ema added and your eyes welled with tears
“Thank you for raising such an amazing son. He’s so kind and so gentle and so patient with me,” you sobbed as Auston took your hand and you turned to look at him, continuing your praise, “he’s so good and I’ve never met anyone like him. And he owes all of that to both of you.” You looked over to see Ema begin to tear up before a big smile took over her face
“Thank you,” she started and you gave her a confused look, “for loving him. For taking care of him when we can’t. For being such an incredible woman. You’ll be an amazing mother to our grandchild.”
“Okay, enough,” Auston interrupted, “no more tears. This is a happy day. You’re all too emotional, come on Mom, Dad, let’s get you back into the waiting area.” He kissed your forehead just as your Doctor entered the room
“You feeling dilated yet?”
“Nadia, Doc, I think I’m ready to go,” you said, with a giggle, before feeling faint, “I don’t even really feel pain anym--” You heard your doctor call some nurses into the room as she called for you to stay awake but you couldn’t lift your eyes open; not even when you heard Auston call out to you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Auston’s P.O.V.
“What’s going on?” you asked in a panicked tone
“She’s hemorrhaging”
“What happened?” Stephanie asked from behind you
“We’re not sure yet,” the doctor replied and you gasped, how could they not know?! “all that matters right now is making sure she doesn’t lose too much blood. We’re going to have to do a c-section”
“How come she didn’t feel anything? Or did she?”
“It’s hard to say, the epidural could’ve disrupted the amount of discomfort she was feeling. She could’ve thought it was just contractions,” she said, rubbing your arm to reassure you, “she’s going to be fine and so will your daughter. I have to get back to her..” Your mind was racing and you didn’t know what to do or what to think. Had you done this? Did you stress her too much? Was it too late for her to have gotten the epidural?
“Auston, she’s going to be okay” Christina said, bringing you in for a hug and you noticed the waiting room had filled with most of the team
“But what if she’s not?”
“She will be”
“I think I need some air.” You ran off to find an exit to get away from the team so you could let the tears fall down your face
“Matts?” Freddie’s voice called out from behind you
“I just need a sec, Fred, okay?”
“Talk to me”
“I can’t”
“Let’s just sit then.” You turned around and saw him directing you the bench beside you; you hesitantly followed his lead. Both of you sat there for a while, in complete silence, before you couldn’t stand it anymore and you burst into tears
“What do I do man?” Your hands rushed to cover your face and you leaned forward, feeling Freddie’s hand rubbing your shoulder
“She’s strong, Auston, she’ll make it through this and still have the energy to tell some really awful joke that she thinks is hilarious”
“Just like Mo” you laughed
“And Mitchy” Fred added
“I don’t know, Freddie, I’m scared. She doesn’t deserve this. The pregnancy had gone so well, everything was normal. Every checkup she was fine, she was healthy. Sure, there were moments of stress throughout but nothing that would cause this…” You gestured toward the hospital doors, leaning your face back into the palms of your hands
“You wanna know what I thought when you first introduced me to her?”
“Go for it”
“What is she doing with him?”
“Gee thanks…” You sighed and Freddie just laughed
“No I’m serious. Everything just seemed like it was some kind of extravagant façade. Like you wanted us to think you were in a relationship, so you hired some girl, who was way out of your league, to pretend with you. But then, she kept coming around. And she attached to your hip like a magnet. And her eyes never left yours. And she smiled every time you were around and every time you looked at her. So, we got to know her and she was legit. But she was funny and smart and witty and confident in a way that didn’t make her seem like a complete bitch. She was ambitious, she knew what she wanted and she wasn’t afraid to go for it. At that point I was even more confused as to how you convinced her to go out with you,” he laughed again as you straightened up next to him, “but she handled us like we were nothing. A group of 30 hockey players, twice her size, and she never flinched when she had to defend herself against our… criticisms”
“What does this have to do with her having an involuntary c-section right now?”
“She’s going to make it through this, with a beautiful baby girl, and be all the stronger for it. She’s already strong but she’s not just fighting for her, she’s fighting for the life that she’s created. The life that she didn’t know how much she wanted until she heard the first heartbeat. The life that’s equal parts her and you.” His words made you feel a little better but you still couldn’t help the few tears that escaped; you expected Fred to get up and give you some space but he just stayed where he was, unflinching, and let you cry without judgement.
“Fuck dude, I don’t know what I’m gonna do if I lose her” you fell back into the bench
“Don’t think like that”
“But I have to. I have to think about what happens if I lose (Y/N) but the baby is okay. What if I can’t let go of it and I unintentionally blame the baby?”
“You won’t, you’re not that kind of guy…”
“I’ve never been in that situation. I’ve never loved anyone like I love (Y/N) and losing her would kill me”
“But you’d get to see a part of (Y/N) in your daughter”
“But won’t that hurt more?” you argued, “getting to see (Y/N) but not actually see her?”
“Sure, it’ll hurt. And so would losing the baby, but you’d get through it”
“How?”
“With a little help from us. The team, your friends, your family…” he turned to you, “but it doesn’t matter. Because you’re not going to lose either of them.” You thanked Freddie just as the doctor came out to find you and you ran back into the hospital toward the waiting area
“Nadia?” you asked, “what’s happening?” She gathered you and your parents to explain what was happening and the rest of the group slowly gathered around the three of you as well
“I think it would be better if the four of us talked alone, Auston, don’t you?”
“They’re family” you stated plainly and Nadia sighed deeply before reluctantly agreeing
“Alright,” she looked at the large group in front of her before training her eyes on you, “we know why she hemorrhaged. The ultrasound must have been misread or misinterpreted because she was pregnant with twins--”
“Twins?”
“Oh my god!” Christina gasped, a tinge of excitement in her voice before Nadia looked sharply at her and she knew there was no cause for excitement
“The baby was stillborn and it caused her blood pressure to spike and her to hemorrhage,” your eyes fell to the floor as the doctor continued to speak, “the second heartbeat is still strong, which is great, but (Y/N)’s heart rate is alarmingly slow”
“Can I do anything?” you asked desperately
“Auston--”
“There has to be something I can do, anything, even if it’s small.” You looked around at your teammates; some had tears streaming down their cheeks, some looked like they wanted to punch a wall, the rest were watching your every move
“Auston, maybe we can just… pray?” Mitch said, still quiet, to break the silence
“What? No!” you yelled
“Papí, please…” your dad tried to calm you
“No, I need to see her. Maybe if I’m there, and she hears me, it’ll help…” You were practically begging and Nadia sympathized with you, telling you to follow her and handing you a set of scrubs before you were allowed to enter the room. You stared into the small glass window and saw (Y/N) on the operating table and your heart dropped but you knew you had to get in there
“Mr. Matthews?” one of the nurses came to grab you, pulling you out of your shock and you followed her in, making your way quickly to (Y/N); grabbing her hand and sobbing when you felt how limp and cold it was.
“Hey baby,” you whispered into her ear, “I’m right here. Everything’s gonna be okay now, our baby’s heartbeat is strong. We just need yours to be a little stronger okay baby?” You leaned your head close to hers, almost connecting your forehead with hers when one of the nurses said you couldn’t
“No skin to skin contact” her eyes were filled with worry for you and (Y/N), making your eyes well up but you just nodded and squeezed (Y/N)’s hand tighter
“You wanna hear a story?” you whispered once more, noticing Nadia and the nurses in the room shift their eyes to you, but you moved her hand closer to your chest and continued, “I always knew I wanted kids, always, I thought I wanted a boy so I could teach him how to play hockey and baseball and do the typical father-son stuff. But then I saw you and all I wanted was to be near you. Whatever that meant. Even if I couldn’t be with you, I just wanted you around because you gave me butterflies and made me nervous and I can’t imagine my life without those butterflies -- without you. When you told me that you weren’t sure you wanted to have kids, I had to think about what I wanted more -- you or a baby. It was always you, (Y/N). I could live with never have a child if it meant I got to be with you but then our lives turned upside down when you found out you were pregnant and I know it was complicated at first. But if I’m being honest, my heart was beating out of my chest when you told me because I was the luckiest guy in the whole world to know that I would get the love of my life and a beautiful baby who looked just like her.” You looked up at the clock as a tear fell down your face, you’d been in the hospital for nearly 13 hours and it would be sunrise soon, “(Y/N), please, come back to me…”
“Alright, I think we’ve got her!” Nadia called out and you jumped up in excitement, thinking they were talking about (Y/N), soon realizing your baby girl was finally in the world, “okay Auston, I’m sorry. You need to go now--”
“Wait… What? No..” you stammered, “what about my daughter? Why can’t I see her?”
“It’s okay, listen, it’s going to be okay,” one of the nurses directed you out of the operating room as you watched intently as Nadia began working on (Y/N), “you’ll see your daughter soon, I promise. We have to focus on (Y/N) and everything will be much easier to navigate if we have a little more space.”
“What’s happening?”
“Trust us”
“What’s happening?!” you yelled
“Trust us!” she countered before storming back into the operating room and you fell back against the wall, crumpling to the floor with your head in your hands as the sun shone through the thick, tinted window next to you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You woke up, exhausted, to find Auston huddled beside you; his head on your arm and his two hands holding your one. You had no recollection of what happened until you took in the room where you were -- that same Giraffe in a tutu -- and you wondered where your baby was.
“Where is she?” you muttered breathlessly
“(Y/N)? Oh my god, baby,” Auston jumped up and kissed your forehead, quickly moving his lips to yours to capture you in a kiss and you felt a tear run down his face, “I love you so much!”
“Where’s our baby girl?” you repeated, just as quietly as before, and Auston pressed his forehead against yours, “what’s wrong?”
“You scared me…” he answered, a small tear falling from his eye onto your cheek
“What do you mean?”
“You weren’t doing so well for a minute there. I almost lost you…” You could tell his lip was quivering, leading you to bring your hand up to cup his cheek and he leaned into your touch
“Everything’s okay now baby” You said, pressing a kiss to his cheek before he got up to walk across the room. You watched as he leaned over a bassinet and cooed to the little one inside, he gently picked her up and you heard a small cry before he calmed her down and brought her over to you
“(Y/N), I think it’s time you met your daughter,” seeing Auston with her made you burst into tears and he tried to stop you, “oh no, what’s wrong?”
“Look at the two of you…” you cooed, “you’re so comfortable with her. She’s so tiny…”
“Isn’t it incredible?”
“Our baby girl,” Auston slowly passed her over to you and you finally got to hold her, her little hands wrapping around your finger, “hello little one. I know you, yes I do. Do you remember me?”
“Did you know that Aurora means sunrise?” Auston asked and you looked up at him, eyes still stinging with tears as your daughter clutched your finger, “and our little girl was born at sunrise?”
“It’s fate. Our little Aurora, our beautiful sunrise.” You looked back at your little girl, leaning in to press your forehead against hers like you’d done so many times with Auston; amazed that something so tiny could come into this world.
“She’s perfect”
“She really is isn’t she?” you watched her eyelids flutter as she fell asleep, “you’re gonna be so annoyed at us, liten en. We’re going to sing to you and give you a bunch of silly clothes and Maple Leafs onesies. Baby girl, you don’t even know how much you’re loved. There’s a whole team of bodyguards waiting to protect you. I pity the man who tries to date you, miss Aurora.” You laughed and kissed the top of her head before looking up at Auston, whose eyes were red and welled up with tears
“I should actually go let them know you’re awake, I’ll be right back” he kissed your temple and wiped away a tear as he left the room. You waited for Auston to bring in some visitors but, after about 15 minutes, no one came; leaving you confused and a little concerned.
“What’s taking daddy so long, huh?” you sat up, trying to look out the door when Aurora let out a whimper and you tried to stop her from crying
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You’ll never know dear, how much I love you. Please, don’t take my sunshine away. The other night dear, as I lay sleepin’, I dreamt I held you in my arms. When I awoke dear, I was mistaken. So I hung my--”
Suddenly, you felt very hollow and you noticed just how quiet the room was. Your eyes filled with tears again but they weren’t happy like before and you noticed Auston leaning against the door with Nadia.
“Auston? Nadia?” you wept, “what happened?”
“Let me put Aurora back into the bassinet okay?” Auston spoke first and Nadia came to your bedside
“So, how are you feeling?” she asked, you tilted your head as tears continued from your eyes, “right. You had some complications, more blood lost than we thought would happen and we had to do an emergency c-section.” You noticed Auston sit in the chair next to the bed, but he wasn’t looking at you and you were growing more and more concerned, “(Y/N), you were pregnant with twins…”
“What? No, the ultrasounds, the doctors, everyone said it was a girl. I have my baby…”
“Something or someone must have misinterpreted the ultrasound or one of the babies was hiding. It happens sometimes, but not to this extent”
“This extent? Meaning to the extent that no one knows they’re having twins?” You asked and Nadia nodded, “what happened?”
“You.. I’m sorry (Y/N) your baby was stillborn,” the word took the air out of your lungs but your doctor continued, “luckily, your daughter was strong and healthy and we were able to bring her into the world and bring you.. back.” You stared at your hands for a minute before feeling Auston’s hand cover yours and you were at a loss of what to do or say. You blinked rapidly as you looked up at Nadia, who, herself, was at a loss of a way to comfort you; she walked over to Aurora and slowly lifted her out from where she slept, “best thing for you and baby right now is skin-to-skin contact. It’ll make her feel safe and it will help the two of you connect…” Still in shock, you raised your eyes to meet Nadia as she brought Aurora to lie on your chest and you watched your baby’s chest rise and fall quickly, tears pooling in your eyes.
“Was it a girl or boy?”
“(Y/N)...” Auston said, abruptly standing up, “we don’t ne--”
“I wanna know” you argued, noticing Auston nod to Nadia and she turned to you
“It was a girl” she said lightly, carefully, to ease the information onto you. You looked down at Aurora and smiled
“You had a sister, baby girl,” you whispered, unsure of anything else to add and you turned to Auston whose eyes were red from tears, “I don’t want her to feel like we don’t love her, Auston, just because her sister is gone. I don’t want her to think that we look at her and only see this sad thing that happened…”
“We won’t,” he answered as Nadia left the room, “do we tell her about her sister?”
“When she’s older, maybe. We can cross that bridge when we come to it”
“Should we name her?” he glanced at you, sitting down when he noticed the tear fall down the side of your cheek
“I can’t” you said and Auston nodded, leaning his forehead against yours before looking at his daughter on your chest
“She’s beautiful” Auston smiled with tears in his eyes and you smiled up at him, planting a light kiss to his lips, careful not to wake the baby
“And so peaceful.” Just then, the door burst open and Mitchy called out
“Uncle Mitchy is here, little Auro--”
“Shhhhh” You and Auston shushed him, hoping that Aurora didn’t wake up only to be met by her loud cries
“Look what you did, Uncle Mitchy,” Stephanie slapped her boyfriend’s shoulder, “sorry babe, we’ll go”
“No, no, it’s okay,” you smiled, “I think Uncle Mitchy should meet baby Aurora and what better time than right now.” Auston laughed, picking her up and walking over to Mitch to pass her over. You noticed Mitch’s face fill with panic as he held your newborn daughter, bouncing her to try to subdue her cries and watched as Auston mirrored his bounce unconsciously, making you laugh quietly.
“How are you doing, (Y/N)?” Steph asked, laying a hand on your shoulder
“I’m okay. Tired but okay.” For a while, your room was a carousel of people coming in and out and visiting with Auston and the baby, you and the baby and asking to hold the baby before finally saying goodbye and giving the next group of people their turn. Eventually, everyone made their way home and it was just you and Auston.
“I’m so proud of you, you know that?” he spoke softly, “As much as you scared me, you were so strong and I am so proud of you.” Your chin quivered slightly at his words and you knew, in that moment, the three of you together was all you would ever need. Over the next few days, you bonded with Aurora and took time to sleep and recuperate when one of the nurses brought up postpartum depression when Auston was out of the room
“It’s common, in these cases, for mothers to develop PPD. You’ve lost a baby and we just want to make sure we’re monitoring you properly”
“I understand that it’s common and, believe me, I understand that you feel like I would be having a difficult time but I’m doing great with Aurora”
“I know you are, (Y/N), and that’s so great. But in situations like these we just require a bit more.. assurance. Your husband is a great source for us and-”
“Boyfriend. We’re not married…”
“Oh. Sorry. Your boyfriend will keep us informed about your progress and you’ll have regular meetings with Dr. Wilson. She’ll make any necessary calls but there shouldn’t be any cause for concern.” You hadn’t thought there was any cause for concern until this conversation and now you wondered how, and when, PPD showed itself. Auston could tell there was something wrong when he finally came back into the room and when you told him, he tried to calm you -- saying it was just procedure.
“I’m sure of it” he smiled
“When can we go home?”
“Tomorrow,” he said quickly, “I checked”
“Wait..” you said, never having thought about this before, “which home do we go to?”
“Oh wow…” his eyes shifted to the floor, realizing his place was ready and yours wasn’t, “we didn’t really think about that did we? We just kind of set everything up at mine…”
“That’s fine. That’s okay. Mine will have stuff in it eventually but at least, for now, we have a crib and everything for Aurora. That’s all that matters right now.” Your response was unintentionally hasty but having the let’s move in together talk right now just seemed like bad timing. All you really wanted was a bed that didn’t smell like powder and a room that didn’t smell like medicine -- it didn’t matter where.
When you woke up the next morning, you saw your bags were packed and Auston holding Aurora in his arms and reading her a story; what sounded like Winnie the Pooh but you really couldn’t be sure.
“Babe?” you asked, rubbing your eyes awake
“Hey, look mommy’s awake,” he cooed to your daughter, “wanna say hi?”
“Hi baby girl,” you chimed as he carried her to you, laying her in your arms, “how are you this morning, my beautiful girl?”
“I think she’s just as ready to go home as you are,” Auston laughed, rubbing his thumb across her soft head before pointing to the pile of clothes on your bed, “I’m gonna grab the car and pull it up front. One of the nurses said they’ll be in with a wheelchair in a minute so you should get dressed…”
“Wait.. Auston, you can’t just” you started before he fled the room, “leave us alone…” You waited until the nurse came and she gladly watched Aurora while you got changed, where you had the first chance to look at your body after everything; noticing the c-section scar across your skin.
“Mrs. Matthews? Everything okay in there?” the nurse called
“It’s Miss (Y/L/N), and everything’s fine, I’ll be out in just a minute”
“Hey,” you heard Auston ask breathlessly, presumably from running through the hospital, “everything okay? She wasn’t outside?”
“I’m fine. I just couldn’t get dressed when there was no one here to watch the baby,” you said, exiting the bathroom, “what if something happened to her?” He smiled and apologized sarcastically before prompting you to get in the wheelchair so the three of you could make a break for it. When you got into the car, you watched Auston in the rearview mirror to make sure that the car seat was buckled properly before coming around the front seat; you grabbed his hand as soon as he sat down, thanking him for being so great through everything
“It’s only ‘cause I love you so much” he joked, bringing his hand up to kiss the back of yours
“You know,” you said slowly, “everyone was very shocked that we weren’t married. The nurse earlier presumed you were my husband, and the one who was watching Aurora when I was changing called me Mrs. Matthews…”
“Mrs. (Y/N) Matthews…” he smiled, “I like the sound of that”
“But we’re not married Auston”
“But we could be” you giggled
“Is that your idea of a proposal?”
“I’m just saying, we had a baby together. We’ve been through a lot, marriage doesn’t seem like such a bad idea”
“Can we just take a breath for a second? We don’t need to get married. I mean we don’t even live together”
“So that’s the other thing I should talk to you about”
“What does that mean?”
“I bought a new place,” he said and your eyebrows rose in shock, “I did it a while ago, like months, and started setting up the baby’s room there. You’ll love it, I promise, I wouldn’t have bought it if I didn’t see you loving it”
“I don’t understand…”
“I want us to live together. It’s not good for the baby to have two places, or for us either. Your place is great, but it’s not big enough for the three of us. And my place is my place…” you scrunched your eyebrows together but he kept his eyes focused straight as he moved at a snail’s pace, “I want this to be our place.” You smiled, leaning your head against the seat, and told him you’d love to move in with him; moving your hand up to play with his curly hair while he drove
“I got lucky with you, Matthews,” you said, “you’re pretty handsome you know?” A small smile played on his lips and his hand found its way onto your knee but his eyes still never left the road
“Thanks babe,” was his nervous response, “I’m the lucky one though”
“Auston, look at me for a second” you laughed
“Hmm, nope, can’t do that. We have precious cargo…”
“You’re literally going 10 miles an hour,” you gestured to the dash, “you hear those horns that are most certainly going to wake our daughter? Yeah, those are because you’re driving so slow”
“I can’t just fly through here…”
“Just go the speed limit baby or pull over and let everyone pass.” He looked at you quickly before finding somewhere to park and you noticed his body loosen from the stiffness it held before
“I guess I’m just nervous, I don’t want anything bad to happen to her,” he looked in the backseat to see if he could get a view of her from where he sat but he caught your eye instead, “hey there”
“Hey there…”
“Have we met before?” he teased and you smiled, “I’m not sure how my girlfriend would feel about a beautiful girl being in my car. We’re moving in together you know?”
“Is that so?”
“It is so,” he replied, “and I’m pretty sure I’d remember you if we met before”
“Well I know your girlfriend and I think she’d be okay with my being in your car”
“Oh yeah? How do you k--” you pulled him in for a deep kiss to stop this back and forth. The kiss got steamier than you thought it would and he was beginning to pull you onto his lap when you stopped him
“Mhmm... we can’t…” you said breathlessly, eyes still focused on Auston’s lips, “we have a baby now. We can’t be having sex in cars anymore. Plus, I’m not even sure if we can have sex this soon. I just really wanted to kiss you…”
“I wanted to kiss you too, I always do,” he cocked his eyebrow, “and we’ll be able to have car sex again eventually. That’s what date nights are for.” You laughed and adjusted yourself back in the car before telling Auston to get back onto the road and to go the speed limit this time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 year later
“Can I get some help please? I think your door shrunk, Matthews” Mitch yelled as he fought to get in
“Maybe it’s the 300 presents you brought. Dude you know she’s only a year old right?” Auston joked
“She has to like me the best, I need to be the favourite Uncle,” Mitch replied, “I mean come on, you made Fred the godfather…”
“Relax, Mitch, this is great,” Auston laughed, “thank you. Let’s go put these on the table”
“He’s not bitter, is he?” you asked Stephanie, “that Auston didn’t ask him to be the godfather?”
“Oh god no, he just likes to joke around,” she smiled, “he’s just not sure why Fred and not Mo or Patty”
“You know I’m not entirely sure,” you admitted, walking around the kitchen island to say hi to some of the guests, “apparently Freddie was there for Auston when I went in for surgery and he was really grateful to him for it. He hasn’t told me what Fred said exactly but it left an impression on Auston so he asked him to be the godfather”
“That makes sense.” Steph replied before the two of you roamed around the party for a bit, talking to as many people as you could until you came across Freddie
“Hey there Mr. goaltender,” you said awkwardly. The two of you hadn’t really bonded in the entire time you’d known him and it was strange that you really didn’t know him when he was the godfather of your child, “how’s it going?”
“Good, how about you?” he asked
“Good!” you replied and the two of you fell back into an awkward silence, “look I just wanted to say thank you”
“For what?”
“For helping Auston when I was in surgery. Whatever you said to him really meant a lot and I so appreciate it; it means a lot to me that you care so much about him”
“You guys are family. I’d do anything for you two, well now you three,” he smiled shyly, “if you need anything and you can’t get a hold of Auston, just call me and I’m there.” You smiled and thanked Freddie with a quick squeeze on his arm before continuing your rounds at the party. When Aurora finally woke up, it was Brian who brought her out to see everyone and you heard everyone’s cooing before you saw your daughter; eventually making your way through the crowd to hold her and Auston stood by your side as he made a small speech.
“We want to thank everyone for coming today. Our little girl is so lucky to be surrounded by so much love and we are so lucky to have people who make it so easy to bring into our lives. You’re all family and we couldn’t have asked for a more loving and caring one, so thank you. Today is a celebration and we intend to make it the best first birthday our little girl could hope for.” He raised his glass and the group followed suit while you leaned up to lay a kiss to his lips, Aurora letting out a little noise as you did so, bringing smiles to yours and Auston’s faces.
“That was beautiful babe” you said, rubbing away the lipstick that marked his lips
“Thanks babe, now let’s get to unwrapping Uncle Mitch’s presents…” The two of you smiled and cooed at your daughter as you walked over to the table. You were shocked when you saw that over half the gifts on the table were from Mitch as you sat down and you laughed when you saw his excitement. Auston started bringing boxes and bags over to you so you could open them and show Aurora what was inside; blankets, stuffed animals, onesies, bottles, bibs, bedtime stories were just a few of the starting gifts and almost none of it was registering with Aurora which made everyone laugh.
“Hey, look little one, that’s you and Daddy,” you said, pointing at the picture someone had gifted you, “and that’s you and me. That was the day you were born!” When her little fingers grazed the pictures as she recognized you and Auston, your heart melted and you kissed her head softly.
“Yeah, that’s all of us baby girl” Auston said with a big smile on his face and Aurora looked up at him with her big doe eyes, both of you waiting for her first word but she just looked down at the pictures. You smiled as tears of joy filled your eyes and continued on with the rest of the gifts; it wasn’t long after that the group began saying their goodbyes and filing out.
“It was so nice to see you,” you said, giving Christina a quick kiss on the cheek goodbye, “thank you so much for coming guys!” You and Auston waved to them as they walked down the driveway to their van and you sighed heavily
“I don’t know about you but I am exhausted,” you said, leaning into Auston’s side, “I think we should get Aurora to bed and then it’s probably best if we head to sleep as well…” You walked into the baby’s room and gently laid her down as Auston’s strong arms wrapped around your waist and he tucked his head into your neck
“I can’t believe how much I love her” he whispered
“Neither can I” you whispered back, falling back into his chest and watching your baby sleep
“Come on babe, let’s get some sleep.” You hummed before taking his hand as he led you out of the baby’s room and into the one you shared with him where you almost immediately crashed onto the California King mattress in the middle of the room. Auston came over to your side of the bed and hovered over you, lifting you up from where you laid with a kiss that moved through your entire body.
“Mmm, what’s that for?” you asked, eyes fluttering open
“Nothing. I just love you that’s all” he replied before kissing you again, bringing you to your feet and gliding his hands to the hem of your shirt; his hands were so warm and your body was so cold that you almost craved the heat from him
“Wait, wait, stop,” you pulled away, “I love you too but we can’t. Okay? Not right now…” He looked so defeated that your heart broke and you pulled him back to you. “Auston, Papí, I love you but I don’t want her to wake up because we were being too loud”
“So, we’ll be quiet…” he moved to kiss your neck and you were lost in the feeling for a minute, moaning into him when you pulled away again
“No, Auston” you forced him to look at you, “not tonight babe, okay? I’m sorry.” You changed into your PJs and got under the covers, waiting for Auston to come back into the room, noticing the look he gave you before he turned off the lights; the only light now coming from the screen on the baby monitor.
“What are you doing, Aus?” you giggled
“I have a question for you,” he said, his voice low, “but I thought you deserved a show to go with it.” He started dancing around the foot of the bed, doing what you could only assume was a strip tease, as clothing started flying toward you and you almost burst into laughter
“What’s your question?” you held back your laughs to keep the room quiet
“Tell me first: do you like my body?” he said, running his hands dramatically down his torso to the top button of his jeans
“What?” you laughed
“I said, do you like my body?”
“Yes, I like your body!” you replied, a giggle and excitement flowing off your tongue
“Good, now, do you like my hair?” he said, moving his hands up his body to tossle his dark brown locks
“Yes, I like your hair.” He was at your side of the bed now, pulling your feet over the edge so you were sitting upright and he could use the space around you to his advantage
“Good. How about my lips?”
“Your lips?”
“How do you feel about my lips, (Y/N)?” he asked and you leaned into him, your lips inches from his and whispered
“I love your lips, Auston…”
“That’s my girl,” he pulled away from you just when you thought he might kiss you, moving his hands back to the waist of his jeans again, “now here’s my real question: do you like my name?”
“Your name? Auston? Sure, yeah,” you started, thinking it was some kind of game he wanted to play, so you added what you thought he’d find sexy, “I like moaning it…”
“I like that, baby, but I was talking about my last name”
“Oh,” you said with confusion, pulling back from your boyfriend, “I guess… Auston, what’s going on?”
“Would you like it to be yours?” he finally said, falling back on his knee and pulling out a small black box
“Oh my god, Auston…” you whispered, still a little confused but mostly shocked
“(Y/N) (Y/M/N) (Y/L/N), I am so in love with you and I have been from the second I laid eyes on you. Everyone told me you were too good for me and I agreed with them because you are. You’re way too good for me, which is why I knew I had to be with you. You have brought so much happiness and love into my life that any second I’m away from you feels like an eternity,” your mouth dropped open as tears sprung from your eyes and Auston’s as well, “honestly, the only thing I’ve ever loved more than you is our daughter. Our beautiful baby girl who got her mom’s eyes and her mom’s forehead, thank god.” You laughed at his remark as tears continued to fall down your cheeks, only now noticing the shaking of his hands so you moved yours over his to calm him, “I want to be the one you come to when you have an amazing day at work, I want to be the one you vent to when nothing seems to be going right. I want to be the one to hold you when you need to cry, I want to be the one you smile at when you’re happy and I never wanna see that smile fade. I want you to be the one by my side through every game, home or away, good or bad, win or lose. I want you to be the one I can lean on and cry to if I need to, I want you to be the one who I wake up to every morning for the rest of my life because I love you. And I want our daughter to know that love exists. I want us to be her best example of love because it’s true and it’s real and she deserves to see the world through rose-coloured glasses. I want us--”
“Auston, baby, you’re running out of breath…” you stopped him, still smiling at his now bloodshot eyes
“I love you, so much, more than I ever thought possible,” he said calmly, “will you marry me?”
“Yes,” you finally said, still sobbing from how much love you felt for the man in front of you, “of course I’ll marry you!”
“Oh thank god,” he laughed, placing the ring gently on your finger and lifting you up, “I wasn’t sure how I was doing there for a second.” He spun you around for a minute, dancing his tongue with yours as your fingers played with the ends of his hair until he slowly set you down
“You were mumbling there for a bit but you did just fine”
“Well see, the plan was: tire both of us out by having sex and that way all my nerves would be gone and it would’ve been a much less frantic proposal. But you rejected sex so I had to improvise…”
“I liked this way so much better,” you said, pushing yourself up to kiss him, “plus, this is a story we can actually tell people…” He laughed and you sat back down on the bed, determined to get some sleep before Aurora inevitably started crying out. Sure enough, she started crying and you pushed the covers off of you to get up when Auston stopped you
“I got this one, babe, you go back to sleep.” You smiled as you watched him leave, thankful that you were with someone who wanted to help as much as he did. You couldn’t help yourself though, so you tiptoed to the doorway of Aurora’s room as she continued to cry, and peered in to see how Auston was doing when you noticed that her crying was lessening more and more. He sat down in the rocking chair after a few minutes and grabbed a book to get Aurora to sleep
Once upon a time there lived a king and queen who were very unhappy because they had no children. But at last a little daughter was born, and their sorrow was turned to joy. All the bells in the land were rung to tell the glad tidings.
You smiled when you realized that he was reading her Sleeping Beauty; leaning against the door to listen closer.
“Just then the wise young fairy came from behind the curtain and said: ‘Do not grieve, O King and Queen. Your daughter shall not die. I cannot undo what my elder sister has done; the princess shall indeed prick her finger with the spindle, but she shall not die. She shall fall into sleep that will last a hundred years. At the end of that time, a king’s son will find her and awaken her.’”
As Auston continued, Aurora seemed to stir more and she clearly wasn’t liking the story causing Auston to panic and try to sing her to sleep. You cringed at his tone deaf cover of Golden Slumbers
“I know I know baby girl,” he shushed her, “mommy’s voice is much better than daddy’s. But mommy is asleep, so you get me…” You brought your hand up to your mouth to bite your nails as you continued to listen from outside the door hoping it would get better but it didn’t and you had to step in
“Okay, I think it’s time for me to step in huh?” you said, walking toward Auston and Aurora, and gently taking her from him, “thanks for trying daddy.” He smiled at you and stepped aside, letting you sit down on the rocking chair.
“Once there was a way. To get back homeward. Once there was a way. To get back home, sleep, pretty darling do not cry. And I will sing a lullaby…”
You glanced up at Auston, who was staring at you almost in disbelief as you sang, and smiled before continuing
“Golden slumbers fill your eyes. Smiles await you when you rise. Sleep pretty darling, do not cry. And I will sing a lullaby. And I will sing a lullaby…”
Aurora had finally drifted back to sleep, so you walked over to her crib to lay her back down; stopping for a minute to watch her dream, barely noticing a tear slip down your cheek until Auston kissed it away
“What’s wrong (Y/N)?” he asked, arms wrapped tightly around your waist and you just shook your head
“What do you think she would’ve been like?”
“Just like her sister…” he said without hesitation and another tear left your eye
“I didn’t think it would be this hard…” you confessed, turning to bury your head in Auston’s chest, “but I miss our baby.” He hugged you tightly, laying his cheek against your head and you felt a few tears fall from his eyes
“I miss her too” he said, kissing your temple sweetly before you pulled back to look at him. You sighed and wiped away your tears, keeping your arms wrapped around Auston’s waist as he walked you back to the bedroom. It was a bittersweet moment; you had just gotten engaged, your beautiful daughter was sleeping peacefully and you had an amazing day with friends but you couldn’t help thinking about the daughter you lost. When you looked over at Auston, who was now sleeping soundly beside you, you thought about how lucky you were to have someone like him in your life. Someone who, not only understood your past and the pain you’d gone through but who loved you through the pain and didn’t try to fight any of it. You smiled as you watched his chest rise and fall and you couldn’t help yourself, you kissed his neck to wake him up.
“Hey babe” he groaned as he woke up, “what’s going on?” You slowly climbed on top of him, legs on either side to straddle him
“I thought I’d celebrate us for a second…” you smiled, moving your hands to the hem of his shirt and leaning down to capture his lips
“What happened? Not that I’m complaining…”
“Nothing happened.. I’m just thankful for you, I’m grateful for everything you’ve done for me…” you smiled as he planted his large hands on your ass, pulling you closer to him. You kissed his lips feverishly, pulling him up to sit up as you kept him locked in the kiss; only parting from his lips when he lifted your shirt over your head
“I’m thankful for you too” he said quickly before you peeled his shirt off and moved back to capture him in a heated kiss. You could tell he didn’t want to break the kiss as much as you but he was determined to gain control, so he flipped you over so he was on top still not breaking away from the kiss. He moved his hands slowly to the waistband of your pajama shorts and pushed them down, moving his lips to your neck as you quickly dragged his bottoms off with your feet; craving his skin on yours with every movement.
“Auston…” you moaned and he lifted his gaze from your neck to meet your eyes, your chest heaving only now realizing how long it had been since you had felt him like this and you pushed yourself closer to him for a kiss; your fingers twisting in his hair before you smiled against his lips
“What are you smiling at?” he asked, pulling away briefly before smiling down at you
“You…” you admitted, “I love you Auston Matthews.” You whispered before laying a soft kiss to his lips and he continued to smile, nothing but love in his eyes
“I love you too, (Y/N).”

If you haven't noticed
Okay hi, so I was going through my writing and it was soooo fucking cringy and gross I wanted to die, soooo I decided to re write them. I like the idea just not the execution lmaooo. Here ya go hope you like it.
p.s I’m always here for constructive criticism
Word count 1.3K
Warnings: uhhh nun I think, its just super fluff
Sleeping was always something you’ve learned to cherish ever since university, your day offs were specifically for you to relax and sleep in.
So days like today, was a blessing, stretching and getting out of bed, only to hear the patters of your feet on the hardwood floor, walking to the bathroom grabbing your phone as you go.
Exams season was currently stressing the two of you, finding any slight moment to take a break was a blessing.
As you walk towards the sink you see a notification from your best friend Ethan. Scrolling through to see his message, slightly making you smile.
Ethan:
Hey my class was canceled I’m coming over in like 5 minutes
You first met Ethan in the campus coffee shop of your first year, oddly enough it was one of those cliche bumping into you nearly spilling coffee all over your situations. Somehow from then a beautiful friendship had blossomed.
Although sometimes you did wish that it was more, recently feeling random sparks when he brushed against you, or random butterflies when the two of you talked.
“Hey E, give me like two minutes and I’ll be there” hollering at him, hearing an ‘okay’. You finish up your morning routine not bothering in changing out of the pajamas you were currently sporting. walking towards the living room to see Ethan already finishing up the coffee that he made.
“Finally I thought you were gonna take forever” he exclaims looking up and pushing a coffee cup towards you.
“Hey, I just heard you come in, stop lying” you argue, taking the coffee cup in your hands, gratefully. Both of you made your way onto the couch, as he updated you with his schedule for the day.
Being slightly delirious from the lack of sleep from the past week, making you slowly fade out of the conversation.
The past weeks have been non-stop studying for the both of you due to exams, which resulted in sleepovers at each other’s dorms, not that you minded. Spending time with Ethan was your favourite thing to do, no matter what. Even if it was spent in complete silence.
“So any plans for today?” he says, suddenly startling you as he slowing put his head on your shoulder, being the affectionate, touchy person that he is. You automatically begin to play with his hair.
“I just wanna sleep all day, all my classes are so draining, exams are killing me” you groan.
The two of you loved spending time together, to the point where people started asking when they started dating. It was awkward for the first couple months, but after a while, it was an on a running joke for the both of you.
“I mean you can take a nap here you know I don’t mind’ you chuckle, knowing he probably wanted to hang out for a while, running your fingers through his soft brown hair. He slowly moves his head, as your words gave him permission to lay his head on your lap, cuddling you. The two were in silence for a couple seconds, your mind going crazy.
“ I didn’t mean here, I have beds you know?” you joke, still playing with his soft hair. He lets out a small chuckle, looking up at you, with his eyes, there were practically sparkling.
“Y/n I can practically hear you thinking-” he mumbles, slowly moving you so both bodies were laying on the couch properly. You were practically on his chest, listening to his heartbeat, his arms circling your waist.
The last few times you had hung out with Ethan, something was different. He was more touchy, not that you were complaining, but what did this mean.
Anyone could tell, it felt like you were walking on thin ice, not knowing whether it would be worth it to say anything. This was new, different, a good different.
As if your heart was gonna fall in your stomach, you suddenly didn’t know how to feel. Was this normal? What was your normal now?
“Etha-”
“-I promise we gotta talk about us and everything recently I know we both have noticed that something is different between us, but right now I know were both sleep deprived so can we just cuddle and sleep” he mumbles into your hair, cutting you off.
You could practically hear your heartbeat. Did he know? what the hell does this mean About to open your mouth to try and respond, you hear his small snores as you look down.
You let out a big sigh, fixing your position so that your head was laying on his chest, hearing his soothing heartbeat, slightly smiling his heartbeat lulling you back to sleep.
Groaning, you open your eyes, realizing that you weren’t where you fell asleep, instead you were in your room. Sheets tangled with your legs along with another pair of legs. What the hell is happening? memories for earlier crashing back. Did he move us here? When did he?
“I promise we gotta talk about us and everything recently I know we both have noticed that something is different between us,” His words crashing back, causing you to smile a little.
You move to lean against the headboard, grabbing your phone from the night table to check the time. 3:06pm.Well, that was a day almost wasted.
Exhaling loudly, getting startled when you feel Ethan’s warm arm move to wrap his arm around you. He groans and stretches as he wakes from his slumber. His eyes fluttering open, smiling, the corners of his eyes crinkled, causing you to have a bigger grin plastered on to your face.
“Well hi there,” his deep, raspy voice, causing you to blush furiously. "I can get used to this" he gets up matching your position, taking his hand in yours as electricity goes up your arm, your heart races.
“Ethan” you whisper, hardly hearing your own voice, what he said previously shocking you. “Y/n I know you feel something different between us, I don’t know how this started, but we’ve gotten closer undoubtedly, and to be honest I love-” he says, keeping eye contact with you
“-I uh really like you y/n, and I want there to be an us, I get it if you’re overwhelmed, its a lot and I kinda just pushed aside this because I refused to say all this while I’m sleep deprived because I know I would sound crazy, I’m rambling now aren’t i-” he chuckles, nervously, taking in all that he had just said, it felt like an entire weight was just lifted. He liked me back?
“Ethan”
“-sorry this was stupid I uh-” he gets up all the way, taking his arm off you, running it through his hair, causing your body to feel cold again. He gets off the bed and makes his way to the door, only to turn around. His face blushing red, his eyes trying to look at anything other than you.
“I’m so sorry y/n I never meant to ruin our fri-“
“Ethan I-I like you too” you whisper, realizing that you were so quiet that he probably didn’t hear you.
His hazel eyes piercing yours, suddenly getting bigger realizing what you had just said, he practically ambushes you on the bed.
Before you could even finish what you were saying you were wrapped up in his arms, hugging him then breaking away for a second.
He looks back into your eyes, the sunlight from your windows on him, making his eyes shine to a point you didn’t know was possible.
Before you can even process what was happening, his eyes flicker to your lips and begins to lean in, slowly pressing his slightly rough lips against yours, smiling into the kiss. His hands cupping your face as your hands make their way up to his neck.
It felt like the two of you were in your own little world, nothing to bother you, warmth and happiness surging through the both of you.
Breaking the kiss, for air, Ethan rests his forehead against yours.
“Y/n if you haven’t noticed by now I don’t wanna be your boyfriend”, you burst out laughing, throwing your head back.
“yeah, I noticed.

Clumsy Pup /8
Pairing: Reader x Hybrid!Kim NamJoon
Genre: Fluff (have I mentioned this has angst at some points?)
Warnings: ... mental breakdown perhaps?
Words: 2,158
<PREVIOUS MASTERLIST NEXT>
Ah... I had the weirdest dream. You thought to yourself, while pushing a load of books on the cart towards the entrance of the store. The weekend had been very lazy and you got a lot of sleep in, so you felt really well-rested, more so that you had NamJoon to cuddle with you whenever. It felt so real, it was about me kissing JiHyun - Lisa would shoot me dead if that really happened -, but when I opened my eyes, I saw NamJoon... You sighed, refilling the empty stands with new volumes of an erotica book that everyone had been hyping about.
- Hey, we’re really excited over there huh? - you heard MinHyuk’s voice and turned, a smile tugging at your lips when you noticed he was referring to NamJoon - you had finally brought him to the library, and he was so excited you thought he’d drill a hole on the floor jumping -, which was balancing a pile of books on one of his arms, as he searched through the shelves for more things. It’s amazing he got drawn to philosophy books mostly. I noticed he’s a fast learner, and he really likes knowing things in general. He’s an amazing thinker. You observed as he nodded to your boss, a small smile on his lips and tail wagging excitedly as he tried to reach for yet another book on a higher shelf.
- Oh watch out Joonie, do you want any he- you tried to say, walking towards him as you saw him struggle, knowing that it wouldn’t end up well. You were slow to move thought, since you didn’t even had time to finish your sentence, he lost his balance and tripped on his own feet, landing butt first on the floor and books scattered around him. Jogging quickly to him, you knelt beside him, noticing how he rubbed his head, which must have hit the shelves behind him. - Geez are you okay? Did it hurt too much? - you tried to reach for his face, but he dodged your hands, face flushing slightly. He must be embarrassed. But I hope he didn’t hurt himself badly.
- Sorry, I’m just really clumsy... Ah I messed up. - NamJoon said in a sad tone, not looking up to you at all. - I’ll just... Go home uh, it’s better to not get you in more trouble... - he muttered, and you frowned, a pang in your chest as you heard him. You wanted to tell him to not worry, but for some reason the words were stuck on your throat.
MinHyuk snorted loudly beside the both of you.
- I’m sorry - he started, as you threw a glare at his inappropriate timing. - I was just thinking where I have seen something like that before, then I realized... Y/N, didn’t you do the same on your first week working here? - he asked, and suddenly all the blood was rushing to your face. Oh right. I actually did worse than NamJoon, since I was trying to prove I was able to do that job...To this day I don’t know how MinHyuk haven’t fired me for the mess I made. You snickered awkwardly, understanding his point on bringing that up. He wanted NamJoon to feel at ease, and it kind of worked, since the pup’s ears perked up a bit.
- Ah why you got to remind me of that? You said you would never talk about it again! - you whined, pushing his shoulder lightly as he crouched beside you two, making him sit. MinHyuk chuckled, touching NamJoon’s knee with the book he picked up, calling his attention.
- It was one of her first days here on the store, and I asked her to organize some books by the codes, not even thinking about how high they should be put. Stupid idea - he shook his head, and you muttered under your breath that he was the stupid one, which made the hybrid’s lips quirk up as he quickly glanced to you. - This little bub here, being the stubborn woman you’ll get to know she is, stacked two stools together on top of the ladder to reach the higher shelf. I never got so impressed and scared my whole life! - he continued, and started chuckling again with the memory, as you looked from him to NamJoon, which quietly nodded as he spoke, a grin growing on his face. - My man, it was like Y/N waited to fall when I got back. I didn’t had time to call out for her when the whole thing crashed down, books falling and the damn shelf tipping on the other... I swear, if there wasn’t a wall behind this one here, she wouldn’t be alive to tell that story. - MinHyuk said, laughing even if he had just told you had almost died.
- Well I’m not even telling the story, so wouldn’t make any difference, would it? - you quipped, gathering some books on a pile and getting up. NamJoon did the same, and you heard him snickering, which eased you a bit.
- Wouldn’t be funny thought. - he shot back, sighing as he got up, laughter subsiding. - My point is, if I didn’t got mad about that, a couple of books would never bother me. I just ask you one thing... Use the goddamn bag, I bought a stack of them for that! - he stressed, pointing beside the entrance where the black bags were hanged, and NamJoon, noticing his scolding didn’t had any heat to eat, dared to chuckle a bit, nodding.
- I’m sorry, I’ll use them then. Thought they’re so hidden I didn’t even noticed they were there... - he trailed off, and you smiled, turning to your boss with an I-told-you-so look, arms crossed. Three months ago, when MinHyuk had bought and placed them on the library you told him no one would use them solely for the fact they weren’t visible. But he didn’t wanted to listen to me...
- Don’t give me that look, I just take in consideration the customer’s opinion. - he tried to excuse himself, but you just rolled your eyes.
- Right... Anyway Joons, let’s go to the back so I can see your head, you bumped it pretty badly, I saw it. - you turned to NamJoon, which opened his mouth to protest, but just the playful quirk of your eyebrow made him stop any attempts.
- See, I told you Y/N is stubborn. You’re doomed. - MinHyuk joked, and you rolled your eyes for the hundredth time, but also made a mental note to thank your boss later for the help.
As fun as work turned out to be that day, you were exhausted, and dropped on the couch as soon as you stepped home. NamJoon didn’t seemed a minute spent, happy with the three books MinHyuk gave him at the end of the day, based on that previous pile he had selected. I wish I had his instincts when it comes to those things, he always know what to get to a customer.
- How’s your head Joonie? Do you think you’ll need medicine to sleep? - you asked, as you struggled to get rid of your coat while still laying on the couch. He plopped on the chair beside you, shaking his head as he chuckled at your antics.
- No, I feel fine! I heal pretty much fast when I’m in good conditions. - he stated, eyeing the three volumes excitedly. He’s not going to sleep today, is he? You chuckled, shaking your head a little.
- Then let’s keep it that way, hm? - you snickered softly. He smiled back a little awkwardly, not taking his eyes from the books, and you understood you would spend a lot of time being ignored.
After taking a shower and eating dinner, you decided to watch a little TV before bed, but ended up falling asleep in NamJoon’s lap - he was so engrossed with his book and it started to become such a usual thing that he didn’t minded at all - within an hour or so into Masterchef. Gordon Ramsey is so rude but so hilarious... That was one of your last thoughts before you fell into slumber.
The light is so bright in my eyes, I can’t even see- Who’s this person in front of me? Ah, my whole head it’s on fire, but I’m so cold...
- Lisa will be here in a little bit, she said she’s bringing medicine… - I hear the someone say, so I must be sick again. ‘Must be Jihyun, I’m troubling him,’ I mutter, and notice he leans closer, looking confused. I want to say I’m okay, that he doesn’t need to worry, but the words don’t come out properly from my parched mouth. He leans further as I mumble, and I swallow, hoping he understood and was about to leave me and avoid catching my illness himself. But he’s so close and I’ve been missing him so much that I just... Kiss him. ‘He’ll probably get mad at me, but...’ I wonder as I open my eyes again, taking in his confused expression.
Namjoon is looking back at me, eyes widened and jaw slacked.
- Ah, you fell on it again, Ji-oppa. You’re so silly. - I mutter, but for some reason it’s like everything starts to melt down.
- NamJoon?! - you jolt awake, head hitting the book off his hands, and almost falling from the couch, wasn’t for him clumsily grabbing you by the back of your shirt
- Is everything okay? Did you had a bad dream? - the hybrid eased you in a sitting position, and you shifted away from his grasp, shutting your eyes tightly, trying to get yourself together. You just had the same dream from the previous night, only that the whole situation was complete. I just had the image of kissing somebody before and then saw NamJoon, but now... You whined, hoping that feeling on your gut didn’t meant to tell you that the whole thing did happened when you were sick.
Lisa had told me I was delirious that afternoon, but wouldn’t she have told me if I did something like that?
- Are you okay Y/N? Is there anything I can do? - again his hands reached for you in worry, but your mouth parted, and you blurted out the question that had been twirling into your mind with ferocity. The hybrid hesitated, hands dropping to his lap, blinking rapidly. You felt goosebumps, not even from disgust or whatever like that, but on the guilt that started to eat at you at his lack of response. Sometimes silence gives consent.
- Look, I’m so sorry about this, I wasn’t even on my right mind... - you breathed out in despair, feeling like you done him so wrong, and he couldn’t even utter a word. Looking at him was embarrassing at the moment, because suddenly all you could remember was that second - his clean smell and soft, plump lips - and felt so fucking bad for misusing his trust. I tuck him to live with me to get him safe, ad then I end up doing that to him, I’m the worst.
- You were delirious... You called by the name of Jihyun. - NamJoon finally spoke, after a couple minutes of silence. - It’s okay, Y/- he spoke softly, but you shook your head strongly.
- Why didn’t you told me that? I should have apologized to you! Right now I’m no better than Yoko, I... - the air left your lungs as you shouted, startling NamJoon to a standing position at your statement.
- Don’t say that! - his hands were hot against your shoulders, and gripped you with enough force to make you look up at him. His eyes brimmed with tears, and your heart clenched tightly. - You don’t know what happened, so don’t ever say that. - he hissed between gritted teeth, and you swallowed as you stared back at his eyes.
NamJoon let go of you and turned away, picking his books up from the floor, and you understood he was really upset, but you couldn’t muster anything to say to him at the moment. It’s not easy to comfort someone when you were the one to hurt them.
- It wasn’t really a big deal, that’s why I didn’t mentioned. - he said over his shoulder. - You did nothing wrong. - muttered, and then walked away, towards his room. The wasn’t a big deal for some reason, felt like a knife on your chest, and you averted your eyes from his back.
- It won’t happen again, I promise NamJoon. - you muttered, but knew that even out of a human earshot, he heard you.

i see the stars in your eyes
pairing: reader x sungjin
genre: fluff, fantasy
word count: 2,485
note: dedicating this fic to the lovely @daysixdreams, happy birthday! this is an odd fic but I hope it’s enjoyable nonetheless!
“Sungjin no!”
That was all you ever screamed for the last month thanks to the visitor that occupied your home. He wasn’t a close relative or a family friend visiting for a while, he was an odd intruder who you couldn’t get rid of no matter how hard you tried. Sungjin, as he called himself, was not your normal twenty-something looking guy, in fact, he was impossibly much older than that and you still didn’t understand how. Then again, you were still at a lost about a lot of things when it came to him.
“Ooops…” He knew he was in trouble as he stared at you with a head of messy hair, a result of sleeping, and the tip of his index finger glowing, proof of the act he just committed. Sungjin flashed you a nervous smile with a hint of innocence, completely ignoring the smoking television next to him. You had warned him earlier that the TV wasn’t broken it was just switched off and like always Sungjin resulted to using his magical abilities to fix something that didn’t need to be fixed. This time he went overboard and short circuited your favorite household object, leaving you with mixed emotions, anger, and defeat.
“I’ll fix it Y/n!” Sungjin spoke hurriedly as he moved in front of the television set. There was a slight breeze in the air of your home, the sleeves of his oversized shirt swaying as well as his fringe. He closed his eyes to concentrate and you could feel your heart drop to the pit of your stomach. Sungjin could possibly blow the place up on accident if he wasn’t careful and then what would you do? Nothing, you’d be dead.
“Sungjin just— “It was too late, he was already emitting a soft glow from the palms of his hands which soon covered the TV and had your wide eyes that were staring in fear, soften at the realization that nothing drastic was going to happen. The television popped on with a children’s cartoon and Sungjin turned to look at you with a proud grin.
“Okaeeey, how was that?” He asked dropping his hands to his side.
“Amazing…” You gave him a content sigh, relieved you didn’t die. Sometimes his magic turned out to be just right.
“Ama...zing…?” Sungjin looked to the ceiling, trying to process the word in his mind. You could tell his thoughts were working quickly to embed it into his mental notes.
“Ahhh, that’s a good word, right?” His eyes met yours and his lips curved into a smile that had your heart beating a little more swiftly. You cleared your throat and nodded your head, breaking eye contact with him before your chest exploded.
“Yeah, that’s a good word Sungjin.” You turned to walk into the kitchen to continue with your usual morning routine, which wasn’t quite usual anymore since he crashed landed into your life.
--
Before you knew a being like Sungjin existed, life was nothing but a boring rinse and repeat cycle and you were the dull bag of laundry that had to suffer through it. There was no light to brighten your days and hardly any friends to keep you sane. It was just you alone with heavy workloads of school and a part time job you didn’t particularly care for. Nothing bad had really happened during your time living, but there was nothing extraordinary or good to bestow upon you and you accepted that it was meant to be that way forever.
That was until you saw the brightest flash of light one late evening as you were walking home from work. Your surroundings fell silent, everything was extremely still making the empty streets appear even eerier. You were concerned that the flash of light came from your apartment building which you could see very well in the distance and within seconds the air became normal again.
You made it to the front door of your home, nothing was out of the ordinary and you wondered if exhaustion from the long day had made you a little delirious. Yeah, the flash of light wasn’t real, you were just sleepy.
Once you were inside you turned on the kitchen light and grabbed a drink from the fridge. You downed the beverage quickly, releasing a relaxed sigh before making your way to your bedroom. When you opened the door, your eyes caught something you weren’t expecting, causing you to slam it hard in a panic. What the hell?
You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. The attractive guy you saw sitting naked in the center of your bed wasn’t real. There was no way he could be real.
After opening your eyes again with a pounding heart, you slowly opened your bedroom door, swallowing the lump that formed in your throat at the sight before you. There he sat with a smile on his face, beautifully illuminated in the dark by the moonlight peering through your window.
“I’ve found you, my husband.” He beamed and you didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at the confusion of his words.
“You mean wife...” You said calmly before your body shifted into a defensive position.
He stared at you quizzically, tilting his head a little.
“Wife? My planet said you would be my husband...” He seemed oddly disappointed and you wondered why you felt the need to correct him instead of screaming and shouting for him to get out of your place before you called the police.
You spent the next five minutes teaching the naked intruder the meaning of husband and wife before proceeding with threatening to call the cops in which he had no idea what they were either. That’s when you knew something was wrong and that he had to be out of his mind or better yet out of this world. He had to be an,
“Alien…”
There was no other word you could use to describe him and his reply proved that you were correct, though it was hard to believe such individuals existed, especially in human skin.
“You can call me Sungjin. I’m the prince of the planet Nohwa, located behind Mars and I’m here to make you my husb- I mean wife.”
He was so confident he had you slipping to the floor in laughter. It was a mix of fear and excitement you felt that night and you were sure it was all the beginning of a dream you’d awake from the next morning.
Too bad you were wrong.
“Can we mate now?” His words sent a flustered shudder down your spine and you immediately reacted throwing a fork at his face which he froze in mid-air. Those words still threw you off each time and slowly Sungjin was learning that they shouldn’t be said. Your answer would always be no.
In a way he couldn’t help it, he was sent to your planet for this very reason, to mate.
Sungjin was an alien prince from a fading kingdom and the only way to keep it thriving was to reproduce with someone from earth and ding ding ding! You were chosen to be the lucky sacrifice to eventually bear his children. You, who hadn’t graduated college or been in relationship before, it was funny how your boring life had come to this.
“Sorry.” Sungjin reached out to grab the floating fork, placing it on the kitchen table.
“It’s hard to process that you humans need love to reproduce.” He rubbed the back of his head, rocking back and forth on the heels of his feet as he watched you from behind.
“Exactly.” You muttered. Sungjin had begun to learn what emotions were while he was here. It was your goal to teach him a lot of things, from what was right and wrong, good and bad. You couldn’t teach him how to love when you didn’t know where to start yourself.
You proceeded to make breakfast for the two of you, keeping in mind what Sungjin liked. Surprisingly enough his taste for breakfast wasn’t too off from yours. The first time you made him foods such as eggs and waffles came to the forefront of your mind. A light laugh slipped at the sight of him devouring everything as if he hadn’t eaten in all the long years he lived, two hundred and forty-five to be exact. You had to physically show him how to use a fork instead of shoving the entire plate into his face.
“Eggs!” You heard his voice perk up and suddenly you felt him standing close behind you, his scent was a sweet aroma that filled your nostrils. Sungjin hovered over your shoulder, you didn’t have to look at him to know his big bright eyes were staring down at the sizzling pan curiously.
“Yes, eggs.” You nodded feeling as though something was missing from this moment. When you dug deep into your mind and realized what it was, your cheeks grew warm. The thought was that it would be nice to have his arms wrapped comfortably around your waist and you began to curse yourself for even thinking such a thing.
“Um... would you like to try Sungjin?” You offered, turning around and pushing him in front of you, placing the fork in his hand.
“Are you sure?” He asked happily, and immediately you felt a bit of regret imagining the stove setting ablaze over eggs he tried to cook.
“Sure…” You spoke through gritted teeth and grabbed his hand, guiding him carefully on how to scramble.
“Just like this.”
You moved Sungjin’s hand in a circular motion in the frying pan, the eggs becoming solid.
“Woah…” He was amazed, almost like a child and you couldn’t help but smile at his reaction to cooking something for the first time. You had to admit he was quite cute sometimes.
You left him that afternoon making him promise not to leave your apartment to explore or follow you to college. Though he had been with you for some time, you still hadn’t developed a backup plan on what to do if he somehow destroyed something in public.
Positivity followed you out the door that day, but negativity returned home with you.
It was one thing after the other. You learned in one class you weren’t doing so well right before midterms and in another you failed an important test with no guarantee of a retake. At work customers being customers, stressed you out over the smallest things, your emotions painting themselves all over your features. Your lack of enthusiasm while working earned you a warning from your boss that ‘you should be more professional’ which further ruined your mood.
When you arrived home after your difficult day you had hoped the ill feelings would wash away, but instead, there was chaos. Your tiny apartment looked as though a tornado had hit it. There were concoctions of food everywhere, plates broken and a strange liquid all over the floor.
“Sungjin!” You yelled for the millionth time, watching him peek his head from behind a dirty wall.
“Ah… I tried to make you dinner.” He smiled that typical smile of his, one that feigned innocence but this time it didn’t matter where he was from, what he was, all your feelings had come to a head making you explode.
“Get out! Get out of here now!” You exhaled all the frustrations you had been keeping to yourself for quite some time and it almost brought you to tears.
“But— “Sungjin had finally shown a look of worry and he really needed to be before you threw anything close by at him.
“Just go!” You glared at him, watching him shrink back and disappear behind the wall again. You tried to make your way through the mess on the floor, stopping mid-way to cover your face and scream into your hands. When you removed them the mess was gone, everything was clean and back to normal which meant the alien prince fixed everything he’d broken once again.
“Sungjin…” You spoke his name a lot calmer, tone still a bit stressed. When he didn’t answer you searched around the apartment to find he was truly gone.
What a way to make yourself feel worse.
The morning came and you ate breakfast alone, it was the first time in a long time you hadn’t finished your meal, thanks to the empty seat in front of you.
It was wrong of you to take your anger out on Sungjin, especially when he was trying to do something nice for you.
Still, you didn’t think this one incident out of many would run him off completely.
The day went on, colorless and cloudy, your mind wondering where the prince who had inhabited your home disappeared to. Maybe he returned to his planet after realizing he didn’t want to be yelled at for the rest of his life.
There was a sharp twinge in your chest at the thought of him not ever coming back. It hurt a little more than you liked and if it were to constantly haunt your thoughts you were sure you’d cry.
It rained that evening before you could make it home and you didn’t complain about how you forgotten your umbrella, feeling deserving of the downpour that drenched your defeated form. You kept your eyes glued to the sidewalk, keeping a song playing in your mind to keep the hopelessness at bay.
The rain stopped suddenly, the transition from heavy to light rain nonexistent and that’s when you realized it the was the work of alien magic. You lifted your gaze to see Sungjin standing in front of you with a gentle smile, holding out your umbrella over your head.
He had frozen time for a split second to cover you and then the rain resumed. He wore his favorite purple sweater you picked out for him a week ago, sweater paws reaching to carefully wipe the water droplets from your cheeks.
“I thought you really left me and went back to Nohwa.” A small smile of relief broke out onto your face.
“I can’t go back not until I have you as my wife…” He smiled.
“I’m sorry for getting so angry…” You apologized and he shook his head.
“It’s okay.” He dropped his hand from your face, standing there awkwardly.
“Sungjin… why did you choose me?” It might have been the oddest time to question him in the pouring rain, but he was here and you were happy he came for you, so was it so wrong to seek confirmation on why he picked you of all people?
“Well besides the fact that our wavelengths are the most compatible...” Sungjin took a step closer to you, gazing deeply into your eyes, the warmest chuckle slipping past his lips.
“I can see the stars in your eyes, and they’re beautiful.”

Halo - An Etrian Odyssey Novel (Chapter 29/50)
"Emery, I don't mean to sound rude," Vien stated from where he was sitting across from the medic, "but you look like a washed-out puppy who got trampled on."
Emery pulled his hand away from his face and glared at the troubadour with heavily lidded, narrowed eyes. His hair was even messier than it had been the day before, likely because he was continuously running his fingers through it and tangling it up, and his glasses kept slipping down his nose, which prompted him into shoving them onto his head. He likely couldn't see anything very well like that, and the obvious lack of sleep wasn't doing him any favors either.
"Have you slept at all?" Arcan asked, and Emery dropped his face against the table with a loud thud.
"Fuck off, all of you, I'm busy with important things," he pushed himself back up, rubbing his hands over his eyes, "I'm taking important walks through the neighborhoods of Lagaard," he held his hands out, eyes a little wild and a manic grin on his face, "I'm looking for a little piece of shit with blue fucking hair and one eye so I can kick his fucking ass before putting him into a medically induced coma and chaining him to the bed so he can't fucking run away again."
Iliad squinted, "Dude, calm down, you're freaking me out."
"Never seen you this sleep deprived before," Vien agreed, "Kinda scary. Please lay down."
"I am not sleeping until I find this fucker!" Emery punched the table, "He just left with a high fever, what was he thinking?! I swear to the fucking gods I will burn this city to the ground!"
"I'm not licensed to deal with this," Iliad said, scooting away from the crazed medic, "I'd ask Dyria to deal with him, but my stupid brother has been forbidden from getting out of bed."
"Who's stopping him?" Arcan asked, and Vien held a finger up.
"Emery, Dr Stiles, and most importantly Sage."
"Oh yea," Arcan held his chin, "I was wondering where he was."
Emery pushed himself to his feet, "I'm going on a walk."
"Please don't attack anyone," Iliad called, and Emery muttered something under his breath that was probably a curse, "I've literally never seen him like this."
"Me neither," Vien agreed with a concerned frown, "Maybe we really should talk to Dyria about this. I mean, does anyone know where Zed might have gone?"
"I know nothing about him," Iliad replied, and Arcan hummed.
"He seems like a really cool guy though, he really put himself on the line in the Labyrinth, which he didn't have any responsibility to do. He's not part of Halo, he didn't have to come with us and help."
"Yea, he got hit pretty bad, didn't he?" Iliad recalled, playing with the bandages supporting his sprained wrist, "What, the Raptor swiped at him once, and the tail hit him and threw him through the air twice? Something like that."
"He jumped up pretty fast though," Vien noted, "Wherever he's from, he obviously trained for a long time. It's gotta be pretty hard fighting with a flimsy thing like a whip, I mean how do you make it work? You just throw it at someone and it automatically wraps around them? Is it magic?"
"No," Iliad said, squinting, "Don't be a dumbass."
"It's because of Emery," Nirim said, looking down at the tea cup he was holding, one elbow propped against the table, his cheek in his hand and a bored expression on his face, "That's why he stayed with us and entered the Labyrinth."
Vien brightened, "Oh, is that so?" he held his cheek, "Looks like this just got interesting."
Arcan leaned towards Iliad, "I don't understand, are they referencing something or is it an inside joke?"
Iliad held a hand up, "I don't know, I just want to eat my eggs and bacon in peace for once."
When Emery left the room he just kept walking, shoes scuffing the floor and eyes focused directly ahead. The bad thing about it wasn't that he was so sleep deprived and stressed he couldn't remember what color his hair was, it was the fact he couldn't see anything more than colors and blurs with his glasses pushed onto his head, so he ended up walking face first into the wall across from the door to the dining hall, stumbling back and snarling before yanking his glasses back onto his face and punching the wall.
"Go fuck yourself! Why can't there be a door here?!" he sighed in frustration and rubbed his hands over his face, "God damn it I need to calm down, take a nap, eat something. What the hell is wrong with me, why am I freaking out over this?" he paused, dropping his hands chest level and curling them into fists, "Cuz the little bitch left with a fucking fever, that's why! Mother fucker not resting when he's sick, what's the matter with him?! Fucking accept healing when it's offered you ungrateful punk!"
"Emery?" the medic turned just enough to see Lynus had wandered over to him, looking fully concerned, though he was standing a few steps away, looking wary, "Are you okay?"
Emery just rubbed at his eyes to somehow clear them, grumbling, "My guild leader is a dumbass and I can't find my roommate, so no," he said, throwing his hands out in front of him, "Are all dark hunters this fucking flighty and difficult to deal with?! What the hell?!"
Lynus blinked a few times, looking surprised, before a half-smile took to his lips, "Well, I'm sure not all of them are, but the one in my guild is a little difficult. That's only because he's young, though."
"I told him to stay in bed," Emery complained, tangling his fingers into his hair, "The idiot had a seriously high fever so I ordered him to stay in bed, but when I got out of the shower he was gone, the window was open, and I walked around all night looking for him but couldn't find him," he lunged forward and grabbed Lynus by his shoulders, "It's been three days! What if he's dead?!"
Lynus had his hands raised between them, eyes wide in shock, "Who are we talking about again? I don't remember a dark hunter being in your guild. Have you slept at all? You look awful."
Emery just dropped his arms to his sides and swayed forward a little, his face dropping against Lynus' shoulder, "No sleep, can't sleep, that idiot has been gone for three days and he had a fever. He's dead, he's definitely dead, I fucked up again, everyone's dying cuz of me."
Lynus squeezed the delirious medic's shoulders, "Don't say that, you're just panicking and overreacting because of stress. You need to sleep, at least for a few hours."
"No way, I can't," Emery argued, his voice muffled, "I need to find Zed and force him to sleep."
"You can't very well look after someone else when you're this exhausted," Lynus chided, pulling one of Emery's arms around his shoulders, slipping his arm behind the other medic's back and leading him towards the hall, "Come on, I'll take you to your room."
Emery made a distressed noise and turned towards the door like he wanted to leave, "I need to find Zed."
"After," Lynus tugged Emery along, "I'll look around while you sleep, how's that?"
Emery pouted a little, staring dizzily at the ground. He couldn't think clear enough to comprehend the question that had been asked, he couldn't really recognize who was helping him towards the room, but it sounded like Sage, so he mumbled.
"Fine, but I need to wake up soon," he rubbed at his eyes as Lynus pushed the bedroom door open and lead him inside, letting him flop onto his bed face first and taking the glasses off his face as he continued to mumble incoherently into his pillow, eyes closed, "M'sorry, fucked up again, always fuck up."
Lynus lowered himself to kneel beside the bed, setting Emery's glasses onto the mattress and frowning, "That's not true, you're an amazing medic, you care about your guild and do everything in your power to keep them healthy."
"I'm a bad medic," Emery disagreed, "I couldn't heal Dyria. He almost died. It's my fault," Lynus' eyes widened at the tears that slipped from Emery's closed eyes, "M'sorry."
Lynus chewed on his bottom lip as Emery stopped talking, he seemed to be asleep finally, so the other medic stood up and backed away quietly with the intention of leaving the exhausted medic to sleep. Several hours passed before Emery finally started to wake up, blinking and wincing at the way his eyes were stinging, groaning and sitting up as he rubbed his eyes with his fingers, looking around the room and squinting in confusing.
"How the fuck did I get here?" he asked aloud, picking his glasses up and slipping them on, "I was eating breakfast a minute ago," he looked over at the window and deadpanned at the dark sky, "What the fuck?"
His head snapped towards the door when it opened suddenly, and felt even more stunned when Zedimir shuffled into the room. His hair was dirty and ratted on the right side of his head, his face was pale, and his golden eye was hazy, but what made Emery freak out was the rust colored stain on the bandages covering his right eye.
"Zed!" he scrambled to his feet and lunged forward to grab the dark hunter, shaking him by his shoulders, "Where the fuck have you been?! Do you know how worried I was?! It's been three days, you left with a fever, what's wrong with you?!"
He gasped a little when the explorer tilted forward, slumping against him so suddenly Emery had to wrap his arms around him, "I'm okay," he mumbled, "I'm used to it. I get sick like this sometimes. I just gotta sleep it off."
Emery grit his teeth and practically dragged Zed over to his bed, lying him onto his back and cursing as he spread his hand over his forehead, "Your fever is worse, damn it. What's wrong with your eye?"
"I'm okay," Zed said again, "It just is kinda hurt."
"That's not convincing," Emery snapped, backing away from the bed and closing the door before grabbing his bag and sitting down on the edge of Zedimir's bed, pulling out a roll of bandages and scissors, "Listen, I know you don't like people near your eye, but I need to change the bandages at least."
Zed furrowed his brow, his fingers curling into the sheets beside him, he looked almost scared, but he didn't argue, and Emery leaned over him, shearing away the soiled bandages and unwrapping them, his breath catching in his throat when he finally revealed the dark hunter's right eye. It was closed, and there were horrific dark marks webbing out from around his eye, which seemed to be leaking the rust colored liquid that was staining the bandages.
"What is this?" Emery asked breathlessly, looking at the bandages, "B-blood? Zedimir...," he looked back at the dark hunter for an explanation, but he had passed out, his left eye closed.
Emery pressed his lips together and stood up, throwing the bandages out before grabbing a bowl and filling it with water, dragging the table and a chair over to Zedimir's bed and setting the bowl onto the chair before soaking a cloth in the water so he could start to wash away the strange black blood.
Somewhere during the cleanup, Zedimir started to tremble, his chest heaving with pants, and Emery cursed, putting the backs of his fingers against his head, "You're even worse now. This never would have happened if you'd just listened to me."
He grit his teeth and cursed, soaking the rag once more before ringing it out and lying it over Zedimir's right eye, then moved to pull off the idiot's shoes, then his shirt, checking over the dark bruises along his ribs he'd received during the fight with the Raptor. Luckily there were no breaks, nothing badly damaged, but a few of his ribs had been bruised, which couldn't feel good.
Add on the fever and whatever was happening with his eye, Zed was probably in agony. Emery let his hand hover over the bruises, furrowing his brow. A simple refresh spell would at least lift some of the discomfort, it would probably help with his fever as well. He remembered how to cast that spell, it was the easiest thing a medic could do, but... what if he screwed up?
Emery tensed up when Zed whined in his sleep, head rolling to the side as he cringed, and closed his eyes, shaking his head, "It's just a simple spell, calm down," he reopened his eyes and took a breath, turning his eyes to Zedimir's side and breathing out, letting the familiar words tumble from his lips as a soothing low glow encompassed his hand.
When he pulled his hand back, he was overjoyed to find the bruising had gone down remarkably, "I did it?" he whispered, looking at his hand, stunned, "I did it. I actually...," he reached out and let his fingers brush against Zedimir's feverish forehead, closing his eyes and whispering the same spell, physically feeling his forehead cool a few degrees.
The fever hadn't gone down entirely, but it wasn't as high, and Emery found himself grinning like an idiot, laughing a little before wiping the smile off his face and taking the cloth back into his hands, dunking it back into the cool water in the bowl and wiping off Zedimir's forehead.
"Don't get too confident, you still can't do shit," he scolded himself, "Just keep his fever from getting too high for tonight, then when he wakes up I can ask what's wrong with him."
Unplanned though it was, Emery ended up staying awake all night, refilling the bowl whenever the water became lukewarm, continuously wiping down Zedimir's forehead, and occasionally casting short refresh spells just to make sure the fever didn't get too high. Between the times he would flip the cool cloth on his forehead, he would sift through his bag, setting out all his bottles of medica and other elixirs and trying to decipher if he had anything strong enough to knock out Zed's fever completely.
It was daybreak by the time Zedimir started to wake up, prompting Emery to lean forward and dunk the cloth into the cold water once more, wringing it out before setting it back across the dark hunter's right eye, just as his left peeled open.
"Hey," Emery set a hand on his shoulder and offered him a warm smile, even though part of him wanted to strangle this idiot, "How are you feeling?"
Zed drew his brow in and lifted a hand to his face, flinching when he felt the rag covering his eye and rolling onto his side, throwing the cloth aside and grabbing handfuls of the sheets, yanking them up and using them to hide the right half of his face.
"Whoa, calm down," Emery forced the dark hunter onto his back, taking his wrist and pulling the sheets away from his eye, "It's okay, I already saw. Your fever isn't as high as it was, how do you feel? Be honest."
Zedimir gaped at Emery in panic, he seemed too distraught to even form words, so Emery just hummed a little and picked the cloth back up, "I want to assure you of a few things before you start to really freak out. First of all, I'm not letting you disappear like that again. If I have to I'll chain you to me, I don't care, if you get this sick a lot, you're not leaving my sight. Second, and I'll have to confirm this with Dyria later since he's the leader, but whether you want to join or not, you're now a member of guild Halo, which means I'm your personal medic and you have to listen to me when I tell you to fucking sleep, got that? Third," he wrung the cloth out and turned to Zed, leaning over him and wiping the rag over the right side of his face, "I don't know what these marks mean, if that red stuff was blood, or if it's making you sick. I have no idea what this is, but it's hurting you. I'm going to fix it. I'm going to heal you."
He turned to his bag for a bottle of medica and gauze, pausing when Zed finally spoke, "You can't," he whispered, "This isn't a normal injury."
Emery set his bag down and turned back to the dark hunter, "What do you mean?"
Zed sighed heavily and rolled onto his left side, curling up, "I grew up in Etria," he started, "My village didn't have a Labyrinth nearby, we thrived from hunting, farming, and trade. Travelers called us old fashioned, but it was a really peaceful life. There was one abnormality to our life, and that was the forest. Deep towards the middle, near a line of mountains, there were ruins of an old civilization. Not impressively big, but the structures had been made of stone, and that in itself made people a little confused. We weren't allowed near those ruins, because we were told it was cursed, that there was a grotto that housed something evil.
"Naturally kids tried going there, but someone always managed to find them before they could enter the ruins or get hurt. At the time, I wasn't interested in the ruins, I was busy training, helping my parents, I didn't care about adventure because I was happy with my life... but I was really young... vulnerable. When I was six, I think, someone stopped me on the road to the fields. He asked me if I would show him to the grotto, but when I tried to say no, he grabbed me.
"I passed out, and when I woke up we were at this... incredibly green, beautiful, but foreboding place. There was a pool of water and the man pushed my head under. The water... burned," he lifted a hand, holding his eye, "I don't know why, if the water was poisoned or cursed, but it burned my skin, I drank some and it burned my stomach, made it hard to breathe. There was a mosaic in the water at the very bottom of the basin, words were written there, but I couldn't read them, and when I told the man I didn't know what it said, he got mad at me. He was a hexer. He cursed me.
"That's why my eye is like this, because he cursed me. When I got home, they knew what had happened, I not only entered the cursed grotto, I drank its water. They wouldn't look at me, wouldn't touch me, called me unclean. My parents would lock me in closets or our basement for days on end, they wouldn't feed me, until I turned ten and managed to get out of the house so I could run away.
"I met my mentor on the road, he was an explorer, a dark hunter like me, and he never asked about the bandages on my face. He was so kind, he took me in, let me travel with him, fed me, trained me, until I turned thirteen and he saw the marks on my face. That night while I was asleep, he took all his things and left me. I've been alone ever since," he slipped his fingers over the marks, "I learned the hard way not to let anyone see them. They would get mad at me, they'd be afraid of me, beat me, lock me away, starve me.
"I don't know what these marks are either, I just know they hurt sometimes, and if I overexert myself or do things that are too strenuous, I'll get sick, I'll cry this strange substance like blood. Normally it goes away after I sleep for a few days, but when it happened this time I was scared of you seeing the marks, so I ran away. I passed out on the ground, was unconscious until last night, my fever just got worse and worse...," he clung to his pillow, hiding his face, "I'm scared. I don't want to be abandoned again. I don't want to be kicked out. I like it here, with you, but I'm scared. I'm not getting better like I usually do."
"Zedimir," Emery reached out and pulled his hand away from his face, stroking his jaw with a thumb and smiling at him, "I'm not going to abandon you. I promise. You'll always have a home here, and if not here, at least with me. I know how you feel after all," he laughed weakly, "When I accidentally killed that boy, my village chased me out and exiled me. I live in constant fear I might mess up and hurt someone else, only to be exiled again. I never let myself relax or get used to places, because I figure they could just kick me out again," he helped Zed roll onto his back, wiping the cloth over his forehead, "I'll take care of you, so you don't have to be scared, okay?"
He frowned when Zed started to cry, clear tears slipping from his left eye, black tears slipping from his right, but he forced a smile so the dark hunter wouldn't notice how panicked and unsettled he was by it, holding the cloth on his right cheek to catch the strange substance.
"The hexer who cursed me told me to live with this curse and die painfully, slowly," Zed mumbled, "I don't want to die."
"You're not going to die, I won't let you," Emery said tersely, "I need you to tell me as much as you can, alright?" he dug in his bag and pulled out a notebook he never used, with a leather cover and something written on the first page that made him tense up.
Use this book to write all your discoveries in, and strive to become a better medic. – Maesa
He tore the page out and crumpled it before throwing it to the side, then turned back to Zed, "Answer every question I ask, no matter how vague or uncomfortable. Do you remember anything else from the grotto or from the legends? Why that water could have burned you?"
Zed shook his head, "I remember a word... a phrase. The hexer kept talking about a gem called Lapis, and on the mosaic, I saw the words Lapis Galəksē. I don't know why the water hurt me though, or what Lapis is."
"Lapis Lazuli is a gem," Emery murmured to himself, scribbling down notes, "Maybe Galəksē is similar? I'll ask Sage about it, he knows more about rocks than I do," he looked up suddenly, "Have you eaten?" when Zed shook his head Emery huffed and shut his book, "I'm getting you something to eat, don't you dare leave this bed, got it? If I come back and see you snuck out again I really will burn this city to the ground, and when I find you I'll chain you down, don't think I'm kidding."
Zedimir nodded, and Emery set the cloth back over his eye, whispering a refresh spell and smiling when Zed's left eye widened in surprise, "I can do that now," Emery said, "I guess I just needed some incentive. I'll be right back."
He stood up and left the room, and Zed settled back against the mattress, lifting his hand to his forehead as his cheeks heated up a little. The ache in his head was nearly gone after whatever the medic had done, and a tiny smile pulled at his lips before he shut his eye. It seems he made the right call to come back after all. He was right to trust Emery.
