alright, so i made this playlist with the target audience of Specifically Me, but if anyone else loves both ofmd and the killers as much as i do, may i present:

i wanted to challenge myself to tell the story of their relationship (throughout s1 + a bit of hopeful speculation) using only songs by the band that's been rotting my brain for the past year, and i think i was able to do it surprisingly cohesively.

a brief explanation and lyric highlight for each choice can be found under the cut.

this could really be read as either a stede childhood song or an ed childhood song. both? both is good.

Laura Marling, Antony Green, Martin Slattery “Red Right Hand” - if I could pick one of my favorite Nick Cave songs for this group of people to cover, this wouldn’t be in my top 10. it would be in my top 20, though. (#1 would be “Mercy Seat” -- look for Cave’s acoustic version from “B-Sides and Rarities”.)

Moon Hooch, Tonio Sagan "Rise" - I’m not in any way qualified to do so, but if for some reason I was asked to pitch a song to be on the next Spider-Verse soundtrack, this would be my pick

Paul Cauthen "Slow Down" - this guy always puts me in the mood to write Dean Winchester (see also: "Everbody Walkin' This Land")

Moon Hooch “God’s Cone” - saxophones with inverted traffic cones over them to alter the sound. the band calls this type of jazz “cave music” and you’re meant to dance to it.

John Francis Flynn "Tralee Gaol" - a hoppin’ tin whistle folk tune. I started listening to it around the same time I first heard Dave Van Ronk’s “Luang Prabang,” and cool fact, you can pretty much sing the latter to “Tralee Gaol”

Odetta "Long Ago, Far Away" - a great Passover song. (uh, other than the Jesus parts, I guess? lol)

Hedy West "The Unquiet Grave" - between my partner and myself, we know a lot of artists who record trad songs. but Hedy West was a new one for us. (she herself is not new - our favorite album of her’s is from 1965.)

S.G. Goodman "Lungs" - what can I say, I’ve been doing a lot of work on my spn fic (see also: “The Way I Talk” is a Dean Winchester song, fight me)

Dave Van Ronk "Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down" - hmm. I don’t know that this would be my top pick for a version of this song, though there aren’t recordings that do the song as well as I think it could be. this also wouldn’t be my top pick to introduce someone to Dave Van Ronk. you could still do a lot worse for either, though, so give it a listen

Shirley Collins, Davy Graham "Hares on the Mountain" - I must admit, Shirley Collins is not usually my favorite. I love her arrangements but the execution can be same-y. this is a delightful song, though, especially if you’re into ships where no one is sure if they want more to fuck or murder each other. it’s full of innuendo, and the vocal style lends itself to the tone. If the young men could sing like blackbirds and thrushes / How many young girls would go beating the bushes?

Exo - Don't Mess Up My Tempo

This is the first boy group album that I’ve ever heard. The only other male album I’ve listened to was D-Day, which was wildly different from this in like, every way. So I went into this one with basically no expectations, and I got … Red Velvet, but male, basically? The title track was fun, I’ll definitely be listening to it more. The b-sides were all way less interesting to me. Mostly slow r&b, lots of pretty vocals, but I don’t really care for those when girl groups do it. And I prefer female vocals to male vocals.

The a capella section in Tempo was SO cool. I know I just mentioned not really caring for pretty vocals, but a capella music is totally different. Same with The Grace - they teased us with a bit of a capella, and then didn’t follow through with it. And, same as The Grace, the remainder of the album was kind of disappointing.

The question that this album raises for me: do I just prefer female vocals, and therefore I won’t ever enjoy boy group music the same amount? Or is this album just not music that I enjoy? I suspect it’s the latter; Tempo was super fun, and there are other boy group songs that I really like. But more listening is necessary. Maybe I’ll check out some of Exo’s titles, and see what I think. Average score of 6.9 which might be a bit harsh, but … this album was a slog, especially near the end. So fair enough.

- Alright, I don’t actually know any Exo songs at all. I’ve got a few Kai songs on my playlist, and I heard Jopping once, and that’s the extent of my knowledge of Exo’s music. So let’s hear this.

The Mista fic playlist (now with context!)

So I finally made the Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday playlist public, and when I looked it over, I realized. Some of these definitely need explanations. And also I will take any excuse to ramble about my tunes, so, if anyone’s curious, here’s little explanations for each song on the playlist so far.

Spoilers for the fic obviously, and for all of Vento Aureo.

Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday - Stevie Wonder: If it’s not clear, this is the song I named the fic after, mainly because I was obsessively listening to it when I first started writing it. YMYYYD is a Naramis fic on the surface, but when I was playing it on repeat imagining a little animatic that I’ll never make bc I’m not an artist figuring out how this title was going to work in my brain, I pictured the “Me” and “You” referring to Mista and Fugo, in a platonic sense, but take it as you will.

The Sweetest Thing - Camera Obscura: This is the song that inspired the whole thing. Back when this was going to be a oneshot fic (lol), I was actually considering having it as a sort of braided narrative thing between Mista and Fugo in this singular scene at the bar, heavily based off the first verses of this song: Mista going on a date to forget about Narancia, Fugo immersing himself in music to ignore the shadow of Giorno lingering over him, and both of them instead getting stuck in the past. But I ran what would become the first and third chapters by my friend, we decided it worked better as a longer fic, and the rest is history.

The Girl of My Best Friend - Elvis Presley: No deep meaning really, just kind of the Mista vibe at the beginning of the fic with developing feelings for Narancia (although he’s much more unaware of what these feelings mean).

Come Back When You Grow Up - Bobby Vee: Not solely related to the fic, per se, but this is the Fugonara breakup song imo. I don’t talk about the circumstances of their breakup in the fic, really, but I can say it had a lot to do with Fugo’s insecurities; at the same time, I imagine him using Narancia’s “immaturity” as an excuse - hence, this song.

Kiss With A Fist: Florence + the Machine: I just listened to this over and over while writing the Fugo and Mista fightfight scene in chapter 5. Not meant to imply anything romantic, but, again, everything’s open to reader interpretation.

Boyfriend - Best Coast: Just referring to the little Mista/Narancia/Fugo love triangle thing, although I don’t think Mista’s fully aware that it is a love triangle. He’s got a one-track mind, lmao.

Follow that Dream - Elvis Presley: Funny little Giorno song. Something something cute charming sound like his cute charming exterior, lyrics about ambition and dreams and all that.

Jive Talkin’ - Bee Gees: This is one of those meta ones lol. Some fun Bee Gees lore for you guys: this song was originally called Drive Talkin,’ because it was inspired by and composed to the beat of a car driving. So, I listened to this song a lot to get into the vibe of chapter 9, where Mista and Giorno are, well, talking and driving. The more I think about it, the lyrics are a little relevant, too, since they’re about someone lying and putting on facades.

Think For Yourself - The Beatles: Fugo Leaves The Gang Song. If Vento Aureo was a jukebox musical, he’d sing this when he’s having his breakdown and yelling at everyone for betraying the boss. Something like that.

A World of Our Own - The Seekers: Naramis core - that’s why it’s on my Naramis playlist, too. I associate the ending of chapter 10 with this, when Mista and Narancia have a sort of calm before the storm travelling through Venice on the boat. Also, it’s my very specific headcanon that Mista would love The Seekers.

(They Long To Be) Close To You - The Carpenters: Hey it’s that one song that everyone puts on every Mista ship playlist ever (it’s okay I’m not immune). Obviously, this is the song playing in chapter 11, when Naramis becomes Real, and later on in chapter 15.

How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees: Another meta one! I initially planned Narancia and Mista’s slow dance/kiss scene with this song in mind, instead of (They Long To Be) Close To You. I changed it because 1) it made more sense to have a Carpenters song, and 2) those lyrics fit the recurring theme of “Narancia is hard not to fall in love with” better. I think the sound of this song fits the atmosphere I imagined better, though, so I second-guess my decision every now and then, but it’s whatever.

Teen Angel - Mark Dinning: Classic teenage death song for everyone’s favorite teenage death in JJBA :))))). Mostly a tune I listened to and thought of Narancia so I’d be sad while writing the chapter where he dies.

(I Just) Died in Your Arms - Cutting Crew: I thought I was So Very Funny for being like. Haha what if I put this on the fic playlist bc Narancia dies in Mista’s arms literally haha it’d be so funny. It’s not funny. It’s a stupid joke and I’m still sad about Narancia.

Two Faced Man - Gary Wright: This is *the* post-VA Mista and Giorno dynamic song. I probably annoyed my partner so much while writing chapter 14, because I wouldn’t shut up about their tragic relationship (friendship? I like calling it a strangers-to-friends-to-enemies speedrun) and how perfectly this song fits what I was going for.

I’m Looking Through You - The Beatles: Same thing. I imagine Mista’s internal turmoil in chapter 14/the PHF bonus chapter as sounding something like this. The tragic moment where someone you cared about reveals that they’ve been nothing more than a facade, the instant change in your perception of them, the stinging pain of betrayal, etc etc.

Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now - The Smiths: I wrote chapter 15, discovered this song, and was retroactively like “ohhh yeah that’s Mista here.” The “two lovers entwined pass me by” line may or may not apply to something later. You’ll have to see. (Idk I think everyone gets the gist of what’s going to happen tbh.)

A World Without Love - Peter and Gordon: Mista’s lonely as hell, if you haven’t noticed. It’s a cycle of blocking others out because the sting of loss is too much, which only makes the loneliness worse as the effects of self-induced isolation kick in.

Sorrow - The McCoys: Yet another Mista and Giorno toxic dynamic song. I prefer the version by The Merseys, but it’s not on Spotify, and The McCoys do a really solid version, too. I could go further than the fic into a rant about this song and It’s All Too Much by The Beatles, which both include the line “with your long blonde hair and your eyes of blue,” but are otherwise very different - this one about festering resentment in a relationship one can’t escape, the other about being completely overwhelmed by drugs love and beauty, and how they’re Mista’s and Fugo’s individual perceptions of Giorno, but that’s a talk for another day.

Run Of The Mill - George Harrison: MISTA AND FUGO SONG 100%. Mourning lost friendship, but recognizing that you’re individuals and your decisions are your own, even if they turn you away from the ones you love. All with a lingering undertone of bitterness. Mista definitely plays this on his guitar when he’s alone and thinks about Fugo. Yeah that’s all.

Many wonderful songs by K-Pop artists helped us get through the shit show of 2021.

Continuing with the K-Pop Timeout Tradition (see 2020 Ver) of listing the Top 10 Most Underrated K-Pop Songs because all the other sites are just bothered with the Top 10 that pretty much everyone will have heard of/have fan wars over, below are our top 10 picks of songs that did not rank high (and with MVs just AROUND OR BELOW 1 MILLION VIEWS too) but deserves your attention!

This is the list for artists’ tracks, so the Top 10 underrated non-idol tracks. Click here for the Top 10 underrated idol tracks of 2021.

Some of the non-idol artists have escaped the list in recent years to stardom (for example DPR LIVE, CRUSH and GEMINI) so hopefully, it happens again!

This is in alphabetic order NOT in the order of awesomeness because all of them are awesome.

CHANHYUN - TELEVISION

This song straight-up sounds like a 80s-90s Korean Drama OST jam, with a sexy saxophone intro to boot. Like you can envision this blasting in the background of "Reply 1988" as the leads look lovingly at each other. Given how such OSTs are usually very popular in South Korea, it is surprising that Chanhyun's song with similar vibes and delivered beautifully by him (he completely encapsulated the enunciation of singers of that time period) has LESS THAN 4,000 VIEWS at the time of writing this post. Go check it out if you love 80-90s style K-Pop!

DAVII “Fever” ft. Blue.D

DAVII truly never misses but South Korea and even many international fans continue to sleep on him like he is a prime memory foam mattress. Back with his signature jazzy and sexy sound, this time he is joined by smoky voice vocalist Blue.D, who was stuck in the YG basement until she escaped to form her label in 2021. And these two underrated crooners delivered one of the best duets of the year...with less than 20,000 views at the time of writing this post. If you love alternative RnB duets, you really need to give this a listen.

Hoppipolla “Your Ocean”

After a few sexy recommendations, we are slowing it down for a sad boy ballad. Hoppipolla's "Your Ocean" is emotional and pulls at your heart strings because of the simple and empty feeling the clean vocals creates along with the piano, cello and electric guitar create. The winners of JTBC's survival show Superband in 2019, the band name was taken from the Sigur Rós song of the same name meaning “jumping into puddles” in Icelandic. And indeed, listening to this song, you feel yourself jumping into a puddle of feels, like you are a K-Drama lead who just went through a heart-wrenching breakup. This song barely passed 1 million views and deserves more love for this perfect execution. If you want to experience your own K-Drama dramatic heartbreak moment, play this song on a rainy day.

레인보우노트 (Rainbow note) "얘얘 (YEAH YEAH)"

Okay, there were clearly many retro throwbacks this year and many that caught our eyes and perked our ears because here is another one making our underrated recommendations list. But instead of a more mature romantic mood that CHANHYUN's "TELEVISION" creates, "얘얘 (YEAH YEAH)" screams first love in high school between some clumsy af female lead and some idol type male lead. This has to be one of the cutest 90s energy K-Pop songs of the year. Of recent shows, I can think of this working well in "Hospital Playlist" as a soundtrack, probably for the Ikjun and Seonghwa loveline and during a cute flashback...yet it has less than 12,000 views at the time of writing this post. If you love some cutesy old-school vibes, this is the song for you!

SUMIN "Love is Strange" ft. Qim Isle

Yo, SUMIN did not produce for BTS, Red Velvet, BoA, EXO and Brown Eyed Girls for you guys to sleep on her like this. LESS THAN 60,000 VIEWS ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Especially when she is making such great quirky and experimental pop music. I don't know how to explain it in more simple terms except call it "alien music that is very lit" (for those into late 90s-2000s electronic music, this gives The Chemical Brothers kind of energy but with a modern K-Pop twist). If you like to listen to something more electronic and different, you have to check out this song.

Susan “Eros”

This song is a VIBE. It starts off with very simple guitar chords but is joined by classy RnB-style beats and synth loops to create a charming alternative soul track. To be honest, I do not know much about Susan until this track but it makes me want to get to know her and her music a lot more and why she only got less than 35,000 views here. Her super dreamy sound is reminiscent of Syd from the hip-hop collective Odd Future and alternative band The Internet as well as little dashes of early Jorja Smith. If you are into alternative soul and RnB, you would love Susan's "Eros"!

TAEWOO "hitmeup"

How does this song have LESS THAN 10,000 VIEWS?? This song sounds like a British alt-rock song, due to the electric guitar, drum set loop and the grainy-effect used to process the vocals as well as the melancholy undertone which seems to thread the song from start to finish. People who listen to The Smiths, Keane and more recently Kodaline know what I am talking about. "hitmeup" does not sound exactly like any one of the artists I have just listed but somehow like a combination of all of them - if that makes sense. If you want to listen to some alt-rock sad boy music, this is the song for you!

VINXEN “DON’ NEED”

There has been many great hip-hop songs this year from South Korea but this is definitely one of the most unique ones. This is a funky hip-hop jam with great use of autotune and the electronic guitar and drum set, sounding like Post Malone-kind of music mixed with Woodie Gochild-style vocals and vibes. Hence, it is odd this song has just around 160,000 views at the time of writing this post. You would have expected more attention on VINXEN, since he did finish as 3rd place in Mnet's High School Rapper Season 2 but it seems like the world is still sleeping on his talent. If you like rock-influenced rap, you would love this song!

YONGYONG(용용) "HE'S GONE" feat. Jayci Yucca

Rapper YONGYONG collabs with fellow rapper Jayci Yucca in a catchy performance with dashes of 2000s punk-rock energy. This whole song sounds like an OST for a coming of age kind of show like KBS' long-running "School" series - there is longing, there is angst, there is the smooth and edgy alternative sound that young people enjoy. Seriously, why does this collab only have less than 350,000 views at the time of writing this post? Honestly someone get YONGYONG to do an actual OST for a coming of age show because all her past outings sound perfect for these shows. If you like youthful pop and punk-rock, like early Avril Lavigne and Paramore, but with a more K-RnB and hip-hop twist to it, you should really check out this song!

Youra “MIMI”

Youra just has her OWN SOUND. Like it is dark, yet soft and distant, walking the fine line between something secretly sinister and a relaxing adventure. Her MVs also share the same comforting yet also somewhat discomforting and strange energy. She is like the soft girl version of BIBI - her voice is unique and dark but carefully restrained, mysterious and inviting. Yet most of her songs are underrated and relatively unknown. For example, "MIMI" has only around 500,000 views at the time of writing this post. If you like experimental alternative and indie pop singers like OOHYO with the darker RnB elements of BIBI and Suran, you really need to listen to Youra!

ALBUM REVIEW TIME 👹

And kicking off our long, very long list of October releases is Seulgi of Red Velvet and her solo debut with 28 reasons

What am I if not an SM entertainment Anti (i.e. i don’t tend to like a lot of the music they put out, but for mother seulgi i am willing to give them a go)

28 Reasons -5/10 - I love Seulgi’s voice so much btw. But this instrumental… why is it fighting the vocals?? It sounds like a BoA song. In the sense of the 90s experimental sound. OOO growl girlie. Her voice is so pretty omg. But yeah… not for me

Dead Man Runnin’ - 8/10 - ooo!! Violins!! God i will never stop about her voice its so gorgeous. I mean this in the best way possible, it sounds like a song that would play over an A text scene in PLL. OKAY I LIKE THIS ONE!! OO THE MINIMAL BRIDGE THAT SWITCH WAS RLLY GOOD.

Bad boy, Sad Girl - 6/10 - ooo! More layed back, vibey oh those vocal melodies are amazing. This one is a collab with BE’O. He’s a krnb artist so it makes sense this one is more vibey and slow. His feature is really well implemented. However While it’s a good song I don’t think I would listen to it often

Anywhere but Home - 6/10 - ooo!! The bassline!! Retro disco vibes!! Its kind if reminding me of the song American Boy by kanye and estelle. Its very dreamy. While I usually love the more retro sound in kpop idk if i would listen to this one often

Los Angeles - 7/10 - just wanna start with how im sick about LA being mentioned in songs. Like it cant be that special its just a city. On another note tho. This song starting mellow again. OMG DEEP HOUSE??? TRANCE MUSIC??? HELLO?? That drop goes way too hard, I am a brit at my core, it is in my blood to love trance and deep house drops in songs.

Crown -6/10 - oh this is cool, lower register comes through. This feels like a song for like a girl boss queen /pos. It feels elegant but cool at the same time. Fitting with the song name. Waiting for that final chorus…… oh 🧍🏼‍♀️ all that build up for nothing?? Its just the same thing again WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME ALL THE TIME SM I WILL THROW A BRICK AT YOUR BUILDING. I guess i wont be adding this one to my playlist then ☹️

In conclusion, I added two of six songs to my playlist LA and Dead girl Runnin’ and also, fuck you SM entertainment give us real final choruses 🤬

You wake up to the sound of people getting their suitcases from the overhead cabinets. You stretch out in your seat and open up your window cover and quickly close it from the bright sunlight beaming in. You feel a tap on your shoulder and you look up and it's your fellow colleague Sarah, "hey wake up, sleepy head. We landed."

"Hey, Sarah. Yeah, I'm up, I'm up." You stretch out again and gather up your things and get your carry on bag from the overhead cabinet. As you board off of the plane you see your other coworkers and students waiting at the gate. Once you're all together you guys head to the baggage claim and gather your other bags and guitars.

You guys then hop in a shuttle and head to the hotel where you guys will be staying for the trip. Once you guys arrive at the hotel you help check in all of your students. The lobby is packed with other students from different universities, but luckily enough the check in process doesn't take too long. You head to your room to check it out. As soon as you walk in you carefully prop your guitar case against the wall and toss your bags on the floor and flop onto the bed face first hugging a pillow. You lay there for a moment letting your body relax. You slowly turn over and stare at the ceiling as you listen to the city atmosphere coming from the street below. You sit up and walk over to the window and pull open the window curtain and look down at the street. Your room is on the 15th floor of the hotel so the crowds of people below look like a bunch of ants. You scan the surrounding buildings taking in the scenery.

You hear a knock at the door and it's your colleague Betty, "hey (y/n), we're gonna head out on the town and get an early dinner. Wanna join us?"

"Yeah sure."

"Okay we'll meet up in the lobby in about an hour?"

"Yeah sounds good."

You close the door and decide to unpack some of your stuff. You pull out your phone and call Chris back home. At first he doesn't answer and you look at your clock and figure out that it's around 3 o'clock in the morning back at home. You decided to leave a message instead, "Hey Chris, I know you're sleeping right now, but just wanted to let you know I made it to Japan. I miss you and Dodger. Love you. Bye."

About a minute later your phone is buzzing and you see Chris' face on your screen.

"Hi"

"Hello, beautiful. I got your voicemail."

You can tell he was asleep from the tone of his voice, "Just wanted to let you know I landed."

"I tried to stay awake, but I fell asleep on the couch. I felt the phone vibrating, but it got lost in the covers and by the time I found it, it stopped ringing."

"You didn't have to stay awake."

"I know, but I wanted to…. Or at least try. What time is it there?"

"It's almost 4:30 in the afternoon."

You hear Chris yawn over the phone, "What are you guys gonna do the first day?"

"Just settle in. We're about to go get dinner." You hear Chris yawn again, "I should let you go back to sleep."

"Mmm, call me when you get back to the hotel? I should be better after I get a couple of more hours of sleep."

"It's okay we can talk another time."

"Nooooo, I miss the sound of your voice…. And I miss your face."

You smile, "It's only been a day."

"After a minute passes I miss you."

You giggle, "aww, that's sweet. I think you need to get some sleep."

"Yeah, but please call me later. Promise I'll answer."

"I will. I love you."

"I love you, (y/n). Good night."

"Good night, babe."

You hang up the phone and freshen up a bit before heading down stairs to the lobby to meet up with the others. You guys head out on the town and do a bit of sightseeing before finding a spot to eat. Everyone is tired from the flight so there's not as much talking at dinner, but you know everyone is enjoying their time together.

After dinner you all head back to the hotel. Once you're back in your room you take a quick shower before calling Chris.

It rings a couple of times before he answers, "hello?"

"Hi, did you sleep enough?"

"Yeah…. I wanna see you, can we video chat or is it bedtime for you?"

"Yeah we can for a bit. Let me set up my laptop and I'll call you back, okay?"

"Okay, bye. Love you (y/n)."

"Love you. Bye."

You grab your laptop out of your backpack and hop into bed. You connect to the wifi and call Chris back. It rings twice before you see his handsome face on the screen.

"Hey handsome."

"There's my girl."

You can tell from the background that Chris is in the kitchen, "What are you up to?"

"Cooking breakfast… your favorite… pancakes." He lifts the pan from the stove and shows you.

"Yummy."

"What's some? I think I made a bit too many."

You rub your stomach, "No thank you. I ate enough at dinner."

"How was it? How's the view from the hotel?"

"It was delicious. There was a lot of different food, I couldn't remember the names of everything, but it was really good. Wanna see the view?"

"Yeah!" Chris puts the pan down and concentrates on the screen as you get out of bed to walk to the window. "Oh wait, you were in bed? Sorry, you didn't have to get up."

"No, it's fine. I didn't find my comfy spot yet."

You hear Chris giggle as you open up the curtains to reveal the view. You hold up the laptop closer so he gets a better view and you point out stuff to Chris.

"How far is the university from there?"

"I think the schedule said about a 10 minute drive."

"Ah not too bad, what time do you guys have to be there tomorrow?"

You walk back to bed and snuggle back in the covers with your back leaning against the pillows with the laptop on your lap. "Call time is at 9 so I'll probably wake up at like 7:30-8 and make sure everyone else is up and has eaten breakfast…. And you, what do you have planned after breakfast?"

"Take Dodger for a walk and visit my mom later."

"Tell her I said hi."

"I will."

"How's Dodger?"

"He's doing good. He slept on the couch with me after you called earlier."

"Why didn't you sleep in bed?"

"I fell asleep watching tv waiting for your call, and I was too lazy to walk to the room after you called."

You let out a giggle, "sorry, I didn't mean to keep you waiting."

"It's fine, I'll always wait for you." Chris winks at the screen that causes a big smile to appear on your face.

"I love you."

"I love you too, (y/n). You should get some sleep. You got a long day ahead of you tomorrow."

"I should. I'm really tired from the flight. How do you get used to the time difference?"

Chris laughs, "it'll take another day or so, but you will don't worry."

"Ugh, okay. Gonna sleep now, I'll text or call you when I can okay?"

"Okay. I love you, (y/n). Good night."

"Have a good day, Chris. I love you. Bye."

You close the laptop and place it on the nightstand. You set your alarm clock and soon drift off to sleep.

The next morning you're up 20 minutes before your alarm goes off. Your head is pounding so you take some medicine before having breakfast and meeting your students in the lobby. Once at the university you guys head to the music department and auditorium where you guys will be rehearsing. You think the auditorium at your university is big, but this one seems three times as big. First you guys sit in the seating area as the director of the university introduces himself and welcomes you to campus. After the introduction he shows you the practice and dressing rooms. You guys leave your stuff in the rooms before taking a tour of the music department. Once the tour is over you have your students warm up on stage before rehearsing as a group. Your headache is almost gone which makes you happy, but you brought your medicine with you just in case.

During rehearsal you would walk off stage and down the aisle of the seats. Having to perform in a bigger space than you're used to means you have to play a bit louder to fill up the space. Even though there would be mics set up on stage you made notes in your head on certain parts of the piece where you'll need to change the dynamics. You walk back up stage and end the piece. You flip back through your score and add the dynamic changes and tell your students to do the same. You go through your other pieces and add notes as you go along. Your colleagues are also sitting in the audience so you ask for any suggestions that they have and make note of them too.

After you rehearse all of your group pieces you take a 20 minute break before it's time for the solo acts and duets to rehearse their pieces. During your break you send a message to Chris telling him how rehearsal is going and attach a photo of the auditorium with the caption saying "it's 3 times as big as the one back home." When break is almost over you notice that the other ensembles from the other school start to enter the auditorium to watch you rehearse before it's their turn to practice on stage. You start to get nervous. First, it's the bigger concert hall and now it's having unfamiliar people in the audience during practice, not even during the concert yet. You start to fidget in your seat and you feel your phone vibrate in your hand. You look down and it's a message from Chris:

"Hi sweetheart, that's a beautiful spot you get to perform at. I'm so proud of you. You worked really hard to get there. Don't get nervous, okay? You're gonna do great. I love you. 💙 "

You smile and your eyes get teary, but you quickly wipe them away so your students don't notice. However your friend Sarah is sitting in the same row as you and notices you wiping your face and comes to sit next to you.

"Hey, (y/n). You okay?"

"Yeah, just nerves. I'll be fine."

"I'm here if you wanna talk, okay?"

"Thanks, Sarah."

Rehearsal continues and the solo acts and duets from the students sound great. They even get applauses from the other university that's watching. Once all of the students are done rehearsing it's now your colleagues and your turn to take the stage. A few of them perform before you. Once it's your turn you read your message from Chris one more time before placing your phone is your guitar guitar. You take deep breaths as you make your way up to the stage. You perform 2 pieces "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" by Francisco Tarrega and "Asturias" by Isaac Albeniz.

After you finish your time on stage you put your guitar back in your case and take your seat in the audience and watch your other colleagues perform. Once everyone from your university has a chance to perform on stage the next university sets up their ensemble to rehearse. You, your students and colleagues stay in the audience to watch them as well. After 2 hours of rehearsal you guys go to the practice rooms and work on whatever else needs adjusting. You check in on your students if they need any other help with stuff and you give them your notes that you took while watching them rehearse.

The next few days of the trip consists of rehearsals on stage and in the practice rooms. Not only for your students, but also for yourself. When you're practicing in one of the rooms you get text messages from Chris. Mostly of him saying he misses you and that he loves you. But your favorite ones are random photos of him and Dodger throughout the day.

"Dodger misses you." Attached is a photo of Dodger chewing on one of your shoes. "Don't worry, I'll buy you a new pair by the time you come back home."

"Tell Dodger I miss him too. Gotta get back to practice now. I'll call you later."

When you're back in your hotel room you video chat Chris. As you're eating dinner he's eating breakfast so it seems like you're eating together.

"What's for dinner tonight?"

"I just ordered some fruit and a salad. Not really hungry tonight."

"You okay?" As Chris tilt his head in a concerning manner.

"Yeah, I had a big lunch earlier. I'm fine." You smile to reassure him.

"Okay, remember I'm here if you wanna talk."

You let out a deep breath, "I know, thank you. We've been rehearsing a lot and I'm just tired."

"If I was there I would give you a massage."

"Please? I miss your massages …. And your cooking."

Chris laughs, "just another week and I'll give you as many massages and pancakes that you want."

You sigh, "gosh, another week? Don't remind me." You rub the back of your neck from the tiredness.

"Aww come on, besides all of the rehearsing I'm sure you're having an awesome time, right?"

"I am, I just miss you."

"I miss you too, (y/n). I love you."

"I love you, Chris."

"You should get some rest."

"Yeah, you're right…. I'll call you when I can."

"Alright, sweet dreams, sweetheart. I love you."

"Good night, Chris. I love you."

The second week of the trip consists of master classes with the instructors from the different universities and the guest judges. When you perform with your students you get a handful of great comments and a few pointers to work on before the final performance at the end of the week. Between rehearsals you always find time to call home and check in with Chris.

"Hi Chris."

"Hey beautiful, how's it going today?"

"It's going great. We finished our master classes this week and we have one more full dress rehearsal tomorrow before the concert."

"Woo, sounds like you've been busy… Gosh, I really wished I could be there to support you in this."

"Aww, I wish you were here too… Promise I'll play my solo pieces for you when I get home."

"Please do. I love listening to you play."

"Okay, I gotta go back to work now. I love you, Chris. Bye."

"Love you too, (y/n). Bye sweetheart."

The last dress rehearsal is a success. All of the ensembles from the universities sound amazing. With it being the last night before the concert you go out for dinner one last time with your students and colleagues.

One of your colleagues makes a speech before your food arrives at the table.

"I would like to start off this toast by thanking (y/n) for getting us here. If it weren't for your dedication to your students and your hard work ethics we probably wouldn't have been here."

You turn a light shade of red because now the whole table is looking at you. You take your glass in your hand and raise it up as you stand up from your seat, "I'll take partial credit for getting here. If it weren't for my hard working students we wouldn't be here. These past 2 weeks have really shown me the dedication and time you guys have put into your craft. I really appreciate that, it makes my job easy and fun." The table laughs as you finish up the toast. You enjoy the food and company before heading back to the hotel to sleep.

The day of the concert you get to sleep in longer than usual. You feel refreshed and well rested. You have breakfast and lunch with your colleagues and head back up to your room to relax and call Chris.

"Hey."

"Hi, sweetheart, tonight's the concert right?"

"Yeah, in about 2 hours. Wanted to call you before it starts."

"You excited?"

"Uh, yeah, but more nervous than excited."

"Don't be nervous, sweetheart. You're gonna do great. You've worked so hard and so have your students. You guys are gonna rock. I know it."

"Thanks, Chris. I love you. I'll call you later."

"I love you (y/n)."

You take a shower before heading to the university.

Once you're in the dressing room you unpack your concert attire and dress in your conductor outfit for the ensemble pieces first. You stand backstage to the side as you watch the other universities perform first. After they're done it's now your ensemble's turn to take the stage. As you walk across the stage to the conductor podium you hear the applause and your heart starts to race. You take a few deep breaths before you cue your students. You lose yourself in the musical pieces. All of your focus is on the music and your students. And soon enough you're done. You freeze in the cut off position for a moment before you relax your arms and let out a breath of relief as you step down from the podium and the audience applauses your performance. You bow to the crowd and walk off stage as the curtains close to set up for the next ensemble. You miss the next couple of performances as your change into your solo concert attire. As you take one final look in the mirror in the dressing room you notice a single white rose and an envelope with your name on it. Your eyes get watery because you have a feeling you know who it's from. You quickly rip the envelope open and read the note inside:

"Hi sweetheart, I hope you get this in time before you get on stage tonight. Your friend Sarah contacted me and said you were a bit nervous this whole week about performing. I know I probably sound like a broken record when I say this, but don't be nervous. You're gonna sound amazing on stage. I'm so proud of you. I love you. Can't wait to see you when you get back home. - Chris. "

You smile and wipe the tear falling down your cheek as you freshen up before heading back to the stage. You listen to the other solo performances before it's your turn to perform. As you walk on stage again to the concert bench you take deep breaths to steady your heart beat. You take a seat on the bench and get into the playing position and start your performance. After you play the last note of your piece you freeze for a moment and then relax and take a bow as the giant auditorium fills with cheering sounds. A smile of relief appears on your face as you take another bow and walk off stage. You place your guitar back in its case in your dressing room before heading back to watch the rest of the performances.

Once the concert is over you change into more comfy clothes and head back to your hotel room and turn in for the night.

You wake up early the next morning for your flight back home. You pack up all of your stuff and meet everyone in the lobby to take the shuttle to the airport.

Before take off you send Chris a text:

"Heading home now. Can't wait to see you. I love you."

While on the plane you stay up and watch multiple movies and read some chapters from a book that Chris recommended for you.

Soon enough you're back home in Boston. As you make your way to the end of the gate you spot Chris in his Boston cap and red flannel. With it being early in the morning you see a sleepy smile appear on his face as soon as he sees. You run up to him and jump into his arms burying your face into his neck as he hugs you tight.

"Chris!!!"

"Hi sweetheart."

He gives you a welcome home kiss before you hug him again and pepper his face in kisses. "Gosh, I missed you so much."

He giggles between kisses, "I can tell. I missed you too." You stand there for a minute in each other's arms, happy to be back together. "Let's go get your luggage and head home." He laces his fingers with yours and you lead the way to baggage claim. When your stuff appears on the belt Chris carries your guitar case in one hand while still holding onto yours.

On the drive back home you lean your head on his shoulder as he drives. He kisses the top of your head and you smile watching the sunrise.

Once you make it back home you're greeted with puppy kisses from Dodger.

"Hi handsome!"

He melts to the floor as you rub his belly. Chris laughs and walks passed you and heads to the kitchen, "you hungry?"

"Depends…. You gonna cook pancakes?" You walk into the kitchen and see Chris with a plate of pancakes already made. You cover your face and bust out laughing.

"You said you wanted pancakes when you got home… I never break my promises." He places the plate on the counter and walks up to you and hugs you.

"Do you remember the other part of your promise?"

A grin appears on Chris' face and he leans in for a kiss, "if you're talking about the massage, then yes I remember."

You kiss him back, "then I'll take the massage first." You wink as you lead the way to the bedroom.

Chris laughs and spins you around into his arms and kisses you passionately before picking you up and carefully placing you on the bed with him laying on top of you.

"Welcome home, sweetheart."

You run your fingers through his hair, "I'm glad to be back."

He peppers you in light kisses before you guys roll around in bed, lost in each other's eyes. Soon enough he does end up giving you that massage he promised. You missed the touch of his warm, strong hands on your body. You moaned as your body relaxed more and more. Soon after you fall asleep. A few hours pass and you wake up from your nap. You roll over in bed and see Chris with his phone and headphones plugged in. You tap his arm to get his attention.

"What are you watching?"

He turns his phone so you can see, "you."

"What?" You rub your eyes to take a better look.

"Your friend Sarah emailed me clips of your performances…. You sound amazing, sweetheart…. You always do…. And you look really beautiful."

You set up in bed and kiss Chris, "I love you so much, babe."

"I love you too, (y/n).... Wanna eat your pancakes now?"

"Yes please!" You hope out of bed and run to the kitchen. You can hear Chris laughing from down the hallway. "Oh nooo!"

Chris jumps out of bed and runs to meet you in the kitchen, "babe, what happened??" You both catch Dodger in the act eating your pancakes and bust out laughing. "It's okay, I'll make a fresh batch for you." He gives you a kiss on the forehead as he walks over to the stove.

"Thank you, Chris." You take a seat on the stool at the kitchen island and tell Chris all about your trip as he cooks pancakes for you.

the dps as my favorite things that i've felt

backstage during show time. no time to write, quick, i need to be quick. trying to contain laughter with my castmates as the person on stage goes through a monologue we've seen them mess up a billion times. bursting to giggles at little stage mishaps the audience probably wouldn't notice. frantically looking for a script to make sure we have all our lines memorized right and all our props for the next scene ready. a rush of adrenaline before i have to step back on stage. i look in front of me. the audience is all there, but i don't see anyone. they're not important. they too are just props to this moment of my life. this, this is for us. this is for me.

out at my grandma's house in the country. the country's quiet, and dark, there are no lights. perfect. it's far too late and i'll have to be quick if i don't want my absence noticed, but i rush up to the roof. stars. stars, stars, stars. i always read about how many they were, i wasn't unaware, but i could never see them in the city. not like this. i originally shuffled my playlist but i ended up listening to yesterday by the beatles on repeat, it didn't feel right to change the song. it'd shift the atmosphere, and i just wanted everything to stay the same.

stuck up on the byzantine wall. well, admittedly, i've fucked up. that wall is one of my town's only historical sights worth seeing and it is very illegal to be on it, but it's late, people are home by now and i always used to climb it and walk along it when i was little, why not do it for nostalgia's sake? of course, that was a long time ago and apparently my way down is now blocked. i can't get off. my friends probably think this is hilarious, one of the is filming me and one had to sit down to breathe, and i should be scared that i won't get down or that i'll get in trouble but, frankly, i don't care. i'll find a way out, i always do, i can at least enjoy this. because, boy, is it fun.

walking home, a little later than 10 pm. i know that rehearsal ended at 9 and the plan was to walk him home and go back, but i couldn't leave. when he asked me to sit down next to him, right outside his building's door, at least until we finished out conversation, i couldn't leave. it's rarely i get to see him like this. he seems careless. he seems genuine, and that's a word i've never associated with him. he's cracking jokes and sharing stories and smiling so wide, it makes my chest warm. he kissed me on the cheek before i left. it's not unusual to hug him, but he kissed me on the cheek. i whistle a tune on my way home.

biking through my hometown. it was already cloudy when i left the house and to be honest i was expecting it to rain, but i didn't mind. the rain felt nice, like it cleansed me of whatever was upsetting me. i laugh, loudly. no one was around to hear anyways, who else in their right mind would leave the comfort of their home in the middle of the rain to go on a bike ride? i stop at a park, there's a swing set. i've always loved swings, i stop there for a little bit. i go to my best friend's house, yell outside his window. he pokes his head out, wearing the hood of his jacket. "are you out of your mind?"

it's far too late for me to be studying. it's not even like i need to, right? i should be good by now, and even if i wasn't, i've failed tests before, it's a small moment of disappointment that doesn't last for long after the teacher takes our graded papers back. still, as i'm sitting under candle light, completely focused for the first time in my life, i find myself almost enjoying ancient greek. no, not almost, i'm enjoying it. how i love language. i check my phone, 2:00 am. i could go on for a little longer, this is nice, this is familiar. this is my language, where i came from. besides, how great will it be when i ace this test? i've never liked to study, but learning might be my new favorite thing. what else do you think was kept in the library of alexandria?

oh. so i'm... included? i was pretty used to being alone, it struck me when she came and asked me to sit with her, when the girl behind us initiated a real conversation with me, and that friendly competition the person in the front started with me over grades is fun. i sat during P.E. as i usually do. and people talked to me. people wanted to talk to me. maybe this school isn't all that scary. maybe i should join those little conversations during class today. maybe it's okay if the lesson pauses for a bit. maybe it's okay if they hear me for once.
