see like 90% of the time I fall off a series when there’s an extended flashback but mdzs is like half flashback and gripped me by the throat the entire time and I think it’s because the flashbacks were context for the relationship (and contradicting wwx’s biases) (lol), like there was context for politics and worldbuilding but it was done mostly with the relationship as a focal point… meanwhile with uncanny charm there was a flashback with the brother and his little brother and the underworld guy which is all tangentially related to the main character but that was like. 7+ weeks without the mc + li like if I’m reading a romance I’m reading it for the romance. and I need to get back into legend of the fox bead which had like, I dunno, 6 weeks of li backstory but it’s not context I particularly care about because it’s primarily relationship context with the li + someone from the past, which does give an idea for why the li is who she is and also why she’s a spirit, but if I’m honest, I don’t particularly care. I think mdzs did it best because it’s very frustrating for the reader but still pulls you in, it’s a good balance of tension + momentum and it’s all relevant. a while ago a pal told me ‘yeah a lot of people hated the novel’s structure’ & I was like ‘????? tasteless. enjoy the hostile puzzle feeder of mxtx’s narrative.’

I always get family terms of address confused and I was trying to remember whether to use 舅舅 or 叔叔 to wish uncle a happy bday and you know how I remembered. you know what actually got my brain to connect the dots. was remembering oh jin ling uses 舅舅 for jiang cheng who is his mother’s brother. thanks mxtx for making mdzs a story about uncles.

MONTHS ago there was something about licensure for mxtx properties being offered to eng publishers and I genuinely thought. well. that would be nice but I’m not really expecting much from it since so much of it is so specific to cn genres and stuff. love being wrong! I’m going to scream more

I’m sure I’ve made this post before but something that sticks out to me about mxtx’s writing is how good she is at taking large-scale political/societal upheavals and framing them in a very human-centered way; you get how the central players of the conflict are involved, how they’re affected, you get how the people around them are affected, you get how the people who aren’t personally involved are affected, and not always in that order, too. mdzs and tgcf open up by putting the focus on how random people in the street (or, for tgcf, in heaven) are interpreting the main characters and plot developments. and I’m Never Going To Get Over bamboo hat man’s role. I don’t think it’d be right to frame this in terms though like… an individualistic lens, it’s a good balance between the impact of a single person and how things work systemically & synergistically (so it’s not ALL about a single person)
