Do y'all ever think about Wei Wuxian's relationships and the places that foster them?

After Wei Wuxian's brief stay there, the Cloud Recesses are burnt down by the Wens. The place is destroyed completely, but it's built back up exactly the same as it was before. Resurrected Wei Wuxian can still recognize and navigate it by memory from when he was a teenager before all the destruction.

On the other hand, Lotus Pier, the place where Wei Wuxian spent the better part of a decade growing up, is almost unrecognizable to him when he returns post-resurrection. After Lotus Pier was sacked and massacred, after the twin prides fell apart in the war's aftermath, Jiang Cheng rebuilt the place grander and utterly different than it was before. The buildings Wwx remembers, including his old rooms, are gone.

I think that works quite well as a stand in for certain aspects of Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng's relationships with Wei Wuxian. Lan Zhan becomes Wei Wuxian's support, always solid and the same as he's ever been, and Jiang Cheng tries to remake himself into someone utterly apart from his old martial brother and the relationship they had.

The realisation comes slowly. Wen Qing's been wrong this whole time, all of them have. Whispering in the dark that they're dying. No, that's wrong. A-Ning's got it, following them around like a shadow. All of them, Wei Wuxian, Uncle Four, A-Yuan, her, A-Ning- god definitely A-Ning. They are already dead. Trying to plant rotten radishes in starved soil isn't going to save them. Not when there's nothing for them to be saved from that hasn't already happened. Wen Ruohan signed all of their death warrants the moment they were born- except forWei Wuxian who signed his the moment since he said stop.(edited)

They're dead, and wrong, and empty. They've just got to wait for the last greying leaves to drop.

[continues from part 11. Let's just pretend it hasn't been over 3 years since I posted a ficlet in this series. Warning this has a flashback inside of a flashback ]

Wei Wuxian says, "Time to head home."

"May we speak in private?" Lan Wangji asks, catching Wei Wuxian's wrist. He casts a silent warning toward Lan Jingyi who in turn mimes covering his ears.

Wei Wuxian nods.

The two walk into the cavern opening.

"Why are you reluctant?" he questions.

He holds no rights to Wei Wuxian's confidence, but he must ask. He can't imagine why Wei Wuxian says the last word as if it has no place on his tongue, as if the word holds no association with him, as if he is alone. His heart aches. All he wants is to take Wei Wuxian in his arms and shelter him in an embrace.

Wei Wuxian smiles, awkwardly.

"Certainly the Jiangs would celebrate your return," he adds, stomping down on the urge to pamper Wei Wuxian.

A decade has passed, certainly he must miss his residence. Wei Wuxian spoke so fondly of Yunmeng that Lan Wangji wanted to spirit him there last night.

Wei Wuxian's smiles more broadly. Jiang Cheng's accusing voice rings in his ears alongside the pleas of the dead from memory that refuses to fade.

"Let's go!" Jiang Cheng shouted.

The wards around them screamed. Danger marched in front of them. In the distance is a howl of wolves.

Wei Wuxian stilled and glanced toward the cavern behind him.

"We won't get to them in time." He frowned, but when did Jiang Cheng not have a scowl.

He jested, "When did you become a coward? I'll go alone."

He means it.

Jiang Cheng's jaw ticked. "You have a death wish. They're Wens."

"They sheltered us."

He bobbed his head as if conflicted, but eventually he nodded.

Pulling his thoughts to the present, Wei Wuxian says, "In-house problems."

"Oh."

He smacks Lan Wangji's chest. "Don't worry, every household has them."

Lan Wangji has certainly had his share of those, pleading with his shufu every day for three years. Yet never once would he have believed that his shufu would be glad for his absence. His view of Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli drops several degrees.

His heart aches at Wei Wuxian’s trepidation and it nearly breaks at the line he’s drawn between them. ‘Family matters’ is a boundary that can only be crossed by a select few to do so, when their relationship can only be described as former classmates and friends, is overstepping. It had never been his place to pry; although he had dreamed of one day being Wei Wuxian’s closest confidant and sharing all the joys and pains of life with him, at the moment it will be difficult to even claim that they are more than just acquaintances after thirteen years of separation.

His personal opinion of the current Jiang family head aside, at the very least, he can take solace in the fact that in this upcoming reunion he will be by Wei Wuxian side.

If he had been struck with lightning from clear skies, Jiang Cheng would be less surprised than he is currently spying his former sworn brother standing beside Lan Wangji.

“Long time no see,” he says as if they had separated under anything remotely approaching normal conditions.

A tornado of emotions strikes him. It’s like he’s back in that hospital bed surrounded by incessantly beeping machines. His da-jie held onto him as if she’s afraid he’d be spirited away. Day and night half a dozen people came and asked him questions he couldn't answer.

He’s no fool. He certainly cannot explain that he’s been decimating six generations of the Wen clan the last few years for burning down all his relatives except for his sister. That bloodsucking fiancee of hers had been good for one thing apparently.

The one that infuriates him the most is about the person missing from his side. Although days have passed, he can still feel where his supposedly loyal servant struck. It wasn’t that he was heartless. It was one thing to turn over every stone and blade of grass to avenge his family, it was another to face-off against the clandestine world for the remnants of a family that had destroyed everyone he cared about when he couldn’t imagine any reasonable chance of them succeeding. He must survive as the final heir of his family.

He clenched his fists. He can’t even ask the idiot if it was worth it. Did you enjoy playing the hero? You’re just bone and ash! Look at all these rumors, all people will ever know is these rumors that you’re a madman.

Seeing the man that haunts his nightmares waving so nonchalantly at him, Jiang Cheng can’t help it. The emotions overwhelm him and taking control of his tongue brings him to growl: “So you didn’t die in a gutter.”

Wei Wuxian scratches his cheek. What can he say?

Jiang Cheng has every reason to resent him. It’s funny he thinks in hindsight that the one time that he did something Madam Yu would be proud of is also the first time he betrayed his closest friend. It’s not like there was a point to him telling Jiang Cheng that he had already used his life-saving time to send A-Yuan far away and it wasn’t as if he was going to ask Jiang Cheng to court death with him.

There was no reason to say that he had died. He still recalls the endless, inky black of the other side, and that alluring voice asking if he wanted to take vengeance on the world.

Before this touching reunion can continue, if one could call this a reunion, Lan Wangji steps between these sworn brothers. The blase tone in which Jiang Cheng delivered those callous words drives Lan Wangji to see red. How could someone speak of a friend like that? How dare someone speak of his precious moon’s like he was hindrance?

He growls: “Apologize.”

“Who are you to demand that?”

“His friend,” he says, but he really wants to challenge Jiang Cheng to a duel to protect his beloved’s honor.

Jiang Cheng’s gaze flickers between them, and he scoffs.

“My advice is to pick better friends.”

“There is no one more worthy of attention,” Lan Wangji says, glaring. He has cultivated too well for such provocation to raise his hackles and summon his fangs. It is Jiang Cheng’s blessing that he’s too respectable to maul someone.

Those words shock Wei Wuxian more than the fact that Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji are now exchanging blows. He hadn’t expected a warm welcome after what he had done. Jiang Cheng has too much pride for that — that he hadn’t chased Wei Wuxian was a sign that he was malleable. This is the rudest he’s ever seen Lan Wangji. What had Jiang Cheng done in the last decade for Lan Wangji to be so bold?

In all of Wei Wuxian’s wildest imaginations, he could not even begin to think that the source was him. That was not the first time that Lan Wangji had blatantly shown his distaste.

It was breaking into his fourth year in a world absent from his moon, not long after the three year period had spent howling at the moon with only his melancholy for company. Since he was the type to count it was exactly 4 years and 2 months and 28 days from Wei Wuxian’s disappearance when news of the missing Jiang heir’s re-appearance had spread like wildfire through society, so that someone who had secluded themselves as Lan Wangji still heard it.

Although it was unbecoming of him, he used his connections to determine which hospital, which room, and tracked down Jiang Cheng’s location. If there was any chance he could recover his heart, he would turn over any stone and drag his own name through the dirt.

Not that he needed to go so far, an inquiry from such a renown family brought the information to him easily enough. All he had to do was ask and he found himself outside of a private room.

There was a hollow ache in his chest as he scanned the ward, only to find Jiang Cheng staring back incredulously. Of course the heir of an illustrious family did not share a room. In his rush, he asked: “Where is Wei—”

“How should I know?” Jiang Cheng said. “Whether I know or not, why is it any of your business?”

“He is my friend,” he said, but really wanted to shout because ‘my heart has left my chest and is wandering out of sight’.

Jiang Cheng hissed, “Well, I’d be surprised if he wasn’t just ash now.”

At the same time his heart sank, his blood boiled at the off-the-cuff remark. Logically, he’s aware that people handle death in different ways but anyone deserved better than for their death to be spoken about like that. It wasn’t as if Wei Wuxian was a stray that the Jiang family had picked up that had finally wandered off.

He can be forgiven for growling: “He deserved better than you.”

“What do you know!”

Before their disagreement could come to a boil, the blaring cacophony of machinery called over nurses, who chased Lan Wangji out for upsetting a patient.

To this day, Lan Wangji cannot bring himself to regret antagonizing a patient. After all, his moon deserves the sky and the stars when it seems that all he ever received from others seemed to not even reach the horizon.

If he was capable of reading Wei Wuxian’s mind now, he wouldn’t say this but it had always been Wei Wuxian for him. It has always been true that he never liked Jiang Cheng and that Lan Wangji’s dislike for Jiang Cheng had always sprouted from the fact that that place beside Wei Wuxian had naturally belonged to someone other than him. Despite all of his training, Lan Wangji was merely a wolf yearning for his moon, so he cannot be blamed for finding fault with Jiang Cheng now.

six sentences from something I’m working on:

The Yiling Patriarch is bleeding on his knees before Jin Ling, but it doesn't feel like a victory. It feels like the calm before the storm, hubris before defeat. He should have listened to Sizhui and never set foot in this place.

Myths don't rise from nothing.

The Yiling Patriarch presses his bloody hands against the floor and starts to whistle. The sound makes the hair at the back of Jin Ling's neck stand on end.

this is from an au heavily inspired by elden ring in which jin ling journeys to the burial mounds to destroy the remnants of the yin hu fu and finds that the yiling patriarch isn’t as dead as everyone thinks. literally this whole premise rose from me watching someone stream the malenia boss fight in elden ring and thinking “okay but what if wei wuxian was an elden ring boss”

I've been thinking about how the tcgf roleswaps are always god tier and the mdzs ones always fall flat (svsss being in the middle) and I have a theory.

Mdzs is fundamentally a Shakespearean tragedy; though you wish things turned out for the better, due to each person's nature and the circumstances they are in, there is literally no other choice they would or could make, and that is what the tragedy is built on. Hamlet takes five acts to kill Claudius because he is Hamlet. Wei Wuxian defends the Wen Remnants to the death because he is Wei Wuxian. Trying to put Lan Wangji in his shoes similarly doesn't work because of the nature of the tragedy, and also because though the hold the same values they are fundamentally different people with different ways of thinking, and would never take the same path.

Scum Villain's tragedy is not brought about by Shen Yuan or Luo Binghe. It is inherent in their circumstances, and influenced by their actions, but fundamentally the tragedy is within the narrative itself -- represented by shang qinghua's original draft and by the system. A roleswap between Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe changes the plot, sure, but the narrative remains the same. If that makes sense.

Tcgf however is built around the fact that Hua Cheng and Xie Lian are two sides of the same coin. Xie Lian is a god who almost became a calamity; Hua Cheng is a calamity who refused to become a god. Xie Lian was born blessed with luck and lost it all; Hua Cheng was born under a bad star and now has all the luck in the world. Xie Lian is a prince who became a beggar; Hu Cheng is an urchin who became a king. They're even more yin and yang than wangxian are, equal and opposite in every way. And THAT is why it's so tasty. They're distorted reflections of each other.

I try to but I have a hard time staying on top of them so I mostly just respond to comments on fics I've recently posted haha ^^; but I love comments it always makes my day to receive one!

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

For HxH, it's probably: The Soulmate Phenomenon - modern soulmate au in which Killua rejects Gon being his soulmate Time x Bomb - canon au in which Killua is taken by Pitou instead of Kite For non HxH, I would say Statues which is a she-ra fic in which Adora dies and Catra ends up living at Bright Moon with her grief.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oh gosh the happiest??? I write a lot of happy endings but purely happy fics are a little harder to come by so I'm just going to focus on HxH fics: After x Glow - post canon aged up au of Gon and Killua cuddling nothing else but you - modern au in which upcoming musician Gon visits his long distance boyfriend Killua during the holidays Shotgun Lovers - modern au in which Gon proposes to Killua after a month of dating

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not often but there's been a few comments here and there about elements in my fics that some people didn't like. A lot of people were unhappy with Time x Bomb so that's probably the one I've gotten the most hate for.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Lol yeah I have but only with friends as an rp sort of thing and that was yearsssssss ago.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I don't write a lot of crossovers but I think my daemon au series is the closest I've got? It's basically just HxH but with daemons from the His Dark Materials series.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of and I hope I never will!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! I've had a couple of very nice people reach out to me, I'm honored that people liked my fics enough to want to translate some of them.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Only in an rp sense

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Killugon, obviously haha XDDDD the only other ships I would consider to be my otps are usuk (Hetalia) and gamkar (Homestuck)

15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

The Wild Card and Gold Stained Blue TTT^TTT The Wild Card is a hetalia cardverse au that was my first attempt at a multichapter fic and I just don't have the energy to continue it any more. I'm planning to post a final summary of the ending so at least it will have some closure for readers. Gold Stained Blue is a killugon musician au written out in like bullet point form across three different google docs because it's so ridiculously long. I never got to post any of it because I was too tired after typing all the bullets out so rip. Maybe one day I will post the rough draft just for fun lol.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm really good with dialogue and also one shots. I love writing requests too because I get to create a whole story that has to be told in just a few paragraphs.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I'm not too great with worldbuilding or coming up with non-prompt ideas. I always feel like my more original stuff doesn't make sense and it's too exhausting to flesh out.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I think it's cool but I wouldn't do it again for a fic of my own because I can only speak english and I do not want to butcher another language haha

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Maybe....sharkboy and lavagirl??? I loved that movie a ridiculous amount haha. But the first fandom I posted anything for online was Hetalia.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

This is so impossible to answer aaahhhhhh! I have a soft spot for all my long multichapter fics (Words That Water Flowers, Graffiti, Swan Feathers, Waiting On You) but my the most fun one shots were the most indulgent ones (5 Times Gon Was Jealous, steal x your x breath) and I also like how painting flowers for you turned out since it was a very different fic than my usual ones.

Do you respond to comments? not often; i have made multiple attempts to start replying regularly but all have eventually failed in the face of me desperately wanting to show my earnest and genuine appreciation for each comment vs. wanting to hide my blushing face under a pillow every time. also, because of who i am as a person, each time i sat down to do it i ended up spending hours making little progress and eventually decided that i will make an effort to spend those hours writing or commenting on other fics instead. i am honored by each and every one though!!!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? while i tend to write angst it is always firmly of the “with a happy ending” sort. the one exception is my shortest fic (originally posted on twitter) never been away so long, which is more of an ambiguous/open ending with implied angst. i dooooo outline the eventual happy ending in the endnotes, though. also as it CURRENTLY stands buy back the secrets ends on one hell of an angsty note, but there are two more chapters in the works to fix that.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? despite the wangxian star trek au having like 20k of deliriously happy post-misunderstanding sex, i think trrty has to have the happiest ending because not only does the fic end happily, but there are also multiple very happy codas in which wwx gets a good night’s sleep, finally gets to bang his dragon boyfriend, and, my personal fav, one by aubreyli where wangxian go flying in a thunderstorm.

8. Do you get hate on fics? not so far, for which i am grateful but mostly lucky.

9. Do you write smut? occasionally; on ao3 there’s the aforementioned trrty coda, plus the aforementioned cowritten wangxian pon farr sequence 💪

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written? hmm, i’m not opposed to crossovers—i’ve read some really fun ones (recent fav crossover read here)—but i’d have to be really compelled by both source materials and have a very clear vision for how they interact to want to write one myself. i’ve written a few fandom fusions (aforementioned wangxian star trek au; i also started a wangxian dragon age au but again, no dragon age characters were going to show up, just the world/setting) but no full-on crossovers. i did have one partially drafted wangxian fic that was going to have a hua cheng deus ex machina, alas.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? not that i’m aware of! it’s not something i really go looking for/concern myself with, but so far, like with fandom hate, i’m grateful to not have encountered it.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? yes! my wangxian wedding fic was translated to russian.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? i co-wrote seventy thousand words of published fic with @feyburner! and probably two hundred thousand words of unpublished fic and outlines and story ideas just for fun. even when we aren’t co-writing we tend to talk through our individual fics with each other so we’re pretty in sync when it comes to writing. i also spent like a year in @cairoscene’s DMs concocting whole outlines/zerodrafts for batfam fics together that i still cherish and reread (notable favs: tim drake ella enchanted au, concept where the waynes are cursed to suddenly feel nothing but apathy about tim and he has to deal with that, story where robin!tim gets de-aged and oops red hood is the first one to show up…). i’d say the OCBFEU is fic-adjacent and cowritten by a group of us. also shoutout to the mdzs threadfic @cafecliche and i brainstormed/zerodrafted where lan qiren gets cursed into an owl and post-cql wei wuxian is the one who unknowingly saves him.

14. What's your all time favorite ship? oh yeah it’s [loud truck goes by]

15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? cyborg!wwx…i still think of you fondly. the only ao3 fic i’ve ever posted knowing i probably wouldn’t finish it but wanted to share just for fun.

16. What are your writing strengths? pangs… mining little character details for humor (or, more often, for more pangs)… i also think i’ve really improved my action writing/pacing over the last few years.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? i write actual drafts/prose fairly slowly, which can be frustrating for me. also like @yuebings i often get very caught up in trying to perfect one small part of a draft before moving on. ummmm describing outfits/settings for reasons other than immediate plot-relevant details, i’m terrible at that + remembering to do it—i literally make myself do a What Are We Looking At Here Pass while revising sometimes.

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics? i’m not totally sure what this question is asking tbh, but it’s something i think can be done incredibly well—and, like with many things in storytelling, it’s the sort of thing where if you don’t actually speak the second language you need to be willing to put in work beyond a cursory google to try to achieve what you’re doing, and be willing to admit if it’s beyond your capabilities. i really like how the portuguese dialogue in bbts ended up and that’s 100% because @tigerjpg translated it for me and also already understood the scene/concept/characters; without them i would have found a different way to approach that scene. also, stylistically, i personally like when dialogue in other languages isn’t italicized unless there’s a real reason for it to be.

And then I rememember about Airplane basing some of his characters and plotlines in PIDW on old drafts of other stuff and I start wondering if Wei Wuxian was originally supposed to fall in love with Lan Qiren or Madam Yu

the original rough draft of this story started out a) so close to canon and b) with so few tgcf characters.

(I should mention now it's a tgcf/mdzs crossover fic uwu)

but now i have expanded and lan qiren is stuck dealing with gods coming in and out of the cloud recesses and it's hilarious. he can't say anything. what are you going to do, old man, kick a god out of your house? with lan's reverence for people higher in the hierarchy?

So excited to know that you also love Link Click...! I watched it first before JJK (I know, still kinda new in thw fandom), so Cheng Xiaoshi/ Lu Guang are special to me. And after 2nd season with that finale, wow, for me it feels like came out of a fanfic. So when I got to know Gojo/ Geto somehow they remind me of Cheng Xiaoshi/ Lu Guang, cause both couples are doomed by the narative....

And what do you think after you finished TGCF? Have you read the novels? Just so you know, it is worth it to collect the books. Their story is that good. Also when you finished it, most likely you'll also have some non-canon fav couples (I have 4 non canon fav couples from TGCF)....And have you watch MDZS or SVSSS?

Sorry for my rambling, MXTX is one of my favorite author ever and I like to talk about their works. (And now I'm still depressed with the latest JJK update and nervous with the BNHA update)......

OMG SEASON TWO FINALE OF LINK CLICK ABSOLUTELY SLAYED ME. Lu Guang, the enigma that you are. This whole time!? What a damn reveal! Just thinking about it, tbh, I'm gagged. I like to guess at things, obviously, but just never even fathomed.

I don't know if I'd mentioned that before RE: Gojo and Geto but same. It might be on an anime recommendation draft 😅 Like, sure, their character design is an obvious indication but it's really all the anguish bubbling just beneath the surface. And now I need to read all the source material because I'm not sure I can wait for them to animate (even though the animation is just 😘👌🏾

For background on my experience while watching TGCF, there are a lot of cultural/religious things that were completely out of my current realm of understanding re: ascension, conditions/relation of the supernatural beings discussed, etc. but I was still able to really enjoy it without and prompted curiosity to learn more before jumping into the novels. Like, having watched and read media informed by Japanese culture (and growing up on Inuyasha), you understand the idea of youkai, general types and their dispositions, even some religious aspects to practices by priestesses and even everyday people, etc. so it's a little easier to navigate. So getting into Chinese media of a certain time period where those beliefs and practices inform the story was a challenge but it also just kind of opens your eyes to how much you don't know which is exciting. I absolutely want to check out the books because I need to know Xie Lian's whole origin (including his 17th birthday and his parents backstory) and what transpired to have created the delicate soft spot San Lung has for him. I hadn't heard of SVSSS yet but MDZS is on my TBW and I'm wondering if watching it will help clarify my confusion from TGCF or if I should do some research ahead of time so I'm not as lost.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Right now: Lokius, but in the past I've written: MDZS/The Untamed, Assassin's Creed, X-Men: First Class, Captain America, Overwatch, and a few anime. (Only counting things I've shared.)

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do my absolute best to! Sometimes I fall behind but a few months ago I chained myself to my desk to get caught up and now I'm trying not to let them go unanswered for too long.

I do it because I really appreciate when someone takes the time out to tell me what they liked, or just that they did like what I wrote! Also, I love talking about my fics! So sometimes I may respond with more information than you expected when you left a simple comment about one line you liked. 😆

5. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I hope not, but I have had someone put my fics on GoodReads which I DO NOT WANT. Please, please, please do not list fanfic on GoodReads or any similar site.

6. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Depends on how we're defining "co-written". I've never split writing between myself and another author, but I have done an event fic that was extremely collaborative and I think the artist deserved credit for helping to come up with many of the ideas used.

7. What's your all-time favourite ship?

An impossible question! It's usually whichever I'm focused on at the moment, which is Lokius in this case, but if I have to make a top three Nope. I realized as I was writing those words that that is also impossible!

8. What are your writing strengths?

I know I answered this in a different game and can't remember what I said. 😅 Let's go with soft, sappy moments and porn with feelings. (Get you a writer who can do both, as they say.😂)

9. What are your writing weaknesses?

World building and sometimes scene setting. When I'm picturing a scene, I don't really think much about what's surrounding the characters, so those are details I have to consciously add in after the first draft.

10. First fandom you wrote for?

I honestly can't remember if it was Star Wars (original trilogy) or X-Files because it was so long ago. Probably like circa 1995?
