death, ghosts, and the afterlife on the dream smp: an explanation

when a character on the dream smp loses all of their lives, two things happen simultaneously:

a ghost version of themselves is created

their “true” selves are sent into limbo

each character that has died has undergone this process, with the exception of jack manifold*. wilbur, schlatt, mexican dream, and tommy all had/have ghosts, even if tommy does not remember his. we’ve seen every ghost but tommy’s; however, we know that he exists because glatt spoke of a “british boy who couldn’t stop sobbing and crying about how dream killed him�� visiting his gym alongside ghostbur. when a character is revived, it’s possible that they may regain the memories of their ghosts—wilbur did, to an extent, while tommy did not.

their ghostly counterparts, despite looking similar to themselves and holding the same memories, are not their true selves. they are their own beings, separate from the original self. as much as ghostbur was not alivebur, ghostboo (or boo for short) is not ranboo. while a ghost is in the overworld, the person’s true self is trapped in limbo and unable to escape. when a person is resurrected, their true selves and ghost selves switch places, with their true selves returning to the overworld and their ghost selves being sent to limbo.

it is currently somewhat unclear of how limbo functions. the only two limbos we know of for certain are wilbur’s (a train station) and tommy’s (a black void). while tommy claimed to have been with wilbur for parts of his limbo, wilbur claims he spent limbo alone. boo has now claimed to have possibly seen ghostbur, implying that limbo residents can interact with each other, to an extent, which would line up with tommy’s account of his experience.

* it’s a possibility that the reason jack manifold did not experience the same thing as the others is because he went to hell, not limbo, though nothing is too concrete.
