In addition, Eyre is a Professor Emeritus of painting and drawing at the University of Manitoba where he taught for 33 years, from 1959 until his retirement in 1992. He has been described as a "visual philosopher" and "a true outsider and visionary". Ivan Eyre's paintings and drawings have been exhibited internationally and are featured in numerous galleries across Canada. His sculptures are prominently displayed at Assiniboine Park and the McMichael sculpture garden in Kleinburg, Ontario. The permanent collection consists of over 6,500 artworks by Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, their contemporaries, and First Nations, Métis, Inuit and contemporary artists who have contributed to the development of Canadian art. The McMichael Canadian Art Collection goes well beyond the Group of Seven but it is perhaps best known for the paintings by that group and their contemporaries like Tom Thomson and Emily Carr. And since part of the Group of Seven's Studio Building is part of Voyageur, it was fitting that we were finally invited to present the guitar at the McMichael in 2012. It was quite a day, with an exhibition of our portraits in one part of the facility, our Doug Nicholson portrait station set up to render more portraits of visitors and a presentation in one of the main gallery spaces with Kurt Swinghammer playing songs from his Tom Thomson song cycle, "Turpentine Wind". That's Kurt with our pal Don Ross looking on from the screen.⁠ ⁠ It wasn't too long after this wonderful day at the McMichael that they launched their own guitar project with contributions from Canadian guitar makers like Linda Manzer and our pal Grit Laskin.
