Helicopter Sunday
22nd May 2005
Rangers were crowned champions of Scotland on the last day of the SPL season when Old Firm rivals Celtic fell to a late 2-1 defeat against Motherwell at Fir Park, while Rangers defeated Hibernian 1-0 at Easter Road.
Going into the game Celtic held a two-point lead over Rangers and were leading 1-0 against Motherwell. The helicopter carrying the Scottish Premier League title was on it’s way to Fir Park until the 88th minute when Motherwell’s Scott McDonald scored his first goal to tie the game at 1-1, then adding a second soon after. The helicopter had to make a quick turn around and head towards the capital where Rangers’ Nacho Novo had given Rangers a 1-0 over Hibernian.
Helicopter Sunday marked Rangers 51st top flight Scottish league title.
