AND ALSO
carcar! not both of them winning after being injured!
(and also lando but a broken nose does not compare with appendicitis and a broken rib) (extra fact: doriane pin had to give up her spot in le mans this year bcs she broke her ribs)

After Lunch Snacks | LN4
Part 2 of Lunch Preferences
Ships : Lando Norris x Personal Chef! Reader , Platonic! Oscar Piastri x Personal Chef! Reader
Genre : Fluff
Summary : Now that you knew Lando’s lunch preferences, it’s time to explore what’s for dessert.
A/N : I delivered on my promise for a part 2! 🫶 @smoothoperator-forever700 @same1995
Part 1.
It was universally acknowledged that Lando Norris had the palette of a 5-year-old. Always opting for the safety and comfort of spring rolls and chicken nuggets.
That is why the whole paddock had been led to a shock when Lando had admitted in an interview that he had been exploring a whole lot more options in terms of food. Why? Because he wanted to make his girlfriend, Y/N L/N happy.
* Fish Tacos
Lando and the other drivers are now gathered for the driver’s parade. The drivers might deny it, but they secretly loved doing this before the races, as this allowed them to catch up on each other’s lives.
“You ate fish? No , I don’t believe you” Carlos’ disbelief was instant — their sushi-eating fiasco immediately came to mind.
“It’s true mate! I ate Fish tacos.” Lando bragged smugly to the Spaniard.
“What’s true?” Max then joined the conversation.
“Lando said that he ate fish” Carlos mimicked what Lando said to the Dutch driver.
“Bullshit, I doubt it” Max sniggered, shaking his head.
“It’s true! Y/N cooked something for date night. “ Lando explained
“Did Y/N shove it down your throat or something?” Max asked skeptically
“WHAT? NO! But I did eat it by mistake …. I ate her meal instead of mine, so in a way it was not intentional ” As Lando continued to yap, the 2 older drivers couldn’t help but laugh. They were right to assume that Lando would not eat fish willingly when he couldn't help it.
“But when you knew that it was fish, you stopped eating? What did Y/N say?” Carlos couldn’t help but ask, finding the situation funny.
“I finished everything, Mate. It was that good! I think I could eat anything Y/N cooks” Lando implored, now a soft smile present on the Brit’s face as he remembered his girlfriend.
“Mate, you’re whipped” Max teased
“ I mean, if your girlfriend is that pretty, caring, funny, and can make stroopwaffles anytime, anywhere — you would be too” Lando rebutted with pride.
* Ube Cake
“Thank you for baking, Y/N. Lily has been craving your ube cake for a while, she’ll be so happy for this!” Oscar said happily, as he dug into his slice of cake. This boy used his girlfriend as an excuse when you know for a fact that he was the one obsessed.
You and Osc are in the McLaren Kitchen, it was just after qualifying and the two McLaren drivers had both done excellently. And when your Aussie friend had begged you to bake the cake that you brought to the f2 paddock before— you really couldn’t say no.
“ Y/N? Babe, are you in the kitchen? “ You suddenly hear your boyfriend’s voice coming at a distance.
“Yup, I’m in the kitchen with Oscar” you hollered back to Lando, as you continued to slice the cake. But stopped when Osc tapped your hand, catching your attention.
“I’ll give you a thousand bucks, Lando won’t eat this when you offer him a slice” Oscar suddenly wagered to you as you saw Lando enter the room.
“You’re on Piastri, be ready to pay up!” You whispered hastily to the Australian. And you quickly schooled your facial expressions.
“Hi babe! Congratulations on qualifying. You did amazing, I’m so proud of you” You beamed up at Lando as he side-hugged you and kissed your forehead.
“Thank you, baby! I love you“ Land cooed at you as he pressed his lips to yours.
“You two are gross, I regret allowing this” Oscar wagged his fork between Yau and Lando in disgust at your display of affection.
You couldn’t help but roll your eyes, your arms finding their way to Lando’s waist.
“Oh shush it, Ohscah. No cake for you “ you tutted as you tried to pry the sweet treat away from the Australian.
“I'm joking! You and Lando are perfect together. your future babies will be beautiful and then you’ll live perfectly happy lives .” the Younger papaya driver said in haste as he held his cake closer.
“Flattery can only do so much. Piastri “ You said and Lando sneakered.
“Ohh, cake? Why is it purple though? “ Lando asked in both curiosity and a little bit of distrust.
You and Oscar meet eyes and the bet was absolutely on.
“ You want to try a bite, babe? “ You asked your boyfriend, slowly pushing a clean fork and a new slice to his side.
“What is it though?” Lando pressed but was now holding a fork and was closely inspecting the treat.
Oscar not sitting idly, and not wanting to lose 1000 dollars. Egged on Lando’s skepticism.
“You probably wouldn’t even like it. It’s made from potatoes” Oscar said looking so innocently.
You glared at your bestfriend.
“No, it’s not made from potatoes. It’s from the ube yam. I believe it’s from the Philippines. Remember the Adobo and the fried chicken from Jollibee we ate last month, this came from the same country. You tried to persuade the British driver.
“OH! I loved those. Alright, let me have a bite of this” Lando then took the fork and dug in.
“And you owe me a 1000, Oscy - wosky,” You said as you jumped in success.
“What? You bet on me?” Your boyfriend, who had icing all over his mouth asked, both betrayed and attracted by your actions.
“You bet we did, Babe. And I just won a 1000 “ you cheered kissing his cheek.
While Oscar couldn’t care less, he was just eating happily on the side.
* Paddock famous brownies
“I’m sorry , my girlfriend texted. What’s the question again?” Lando smiled broadly to the interviewer.
“Oh? What did she say?” The interviewer perked up at the mention of the british driver’s girlfriend. She had been a paddock favorite eversince she had been feeding everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her.
“She baked her brownies!” Lando cheered
And as he said that several hollers from drivers were heard from behind the camera .
“ Yo, Lando! I want one”
“Hey~ Landino , you promised me a piece last time!”
“Oi Lando , Y/N said that she baked that for us! “

Hungarian GP 2024: McLaren Race Radios 2
We pick back up behind the scenes where both Lando's tires and tongue are heating up.
Laps 1-30 | Laps 31-39 | Laps 40-54 | Laps 55-70
Lap 31
TS: "And turn 1 exit last lap, don't use the rears quite that much."
Oscar has now gotten repeat tire feedback on turns 1, 3, and 7.
Lap 32
TS: "So Oscar there's some cars ahead now; they're all backmarkers that have come out of the pits, but you'll start to pick up some dirtier air. There's quite a few cars there."
WJ: "Gap to Hamilton now is 4.7. In turn--" LN: [interrupting] "Yep! I want the gap ahead; I'm gonna need a number to go quicker [cause I'm?] slower." WN: "I'm about to tell you. So Lando, mind the rear slips, turn 5, turn 7. Opportunity turn 4: early lift. And opportunity turn 13: early brake release."
This is a FASCINATING exchange. Lando interrupting Will and sounding frustrated, then Will giving a borderline snarky response back. His "I'm about to tell you" is very sing-song "I'm annoying you because you're annoying me" in a kind of sibling petty argument way. Then in the end he doesn't even tell Lando the gap to Oscar 😂 The whole exchange is definitely an indication that Lando was unhappy with the race WELL before the last pit stop strategy/fiasco came into play. Note that Lando is still asking for the tire advice for how to speed up, rather than being nagged about it. However, he's already framing it in terms of CATCHING OSCAR rather than LEAVING LEWIS BEHIND. He wants to win (of course of course, as professional athletes all do), but in doing so he's ignoring that Will has told him twice that "our race is with Verstappen [P3]" (lap 14) and "our opportunity ahead and behind is potentially to extend" (lap 23). In hindsight this looks to be where the seeds of the conflict are planted rather than the end of the next lap where Oscar goes off track. Lando here is already chafing against the team order to protect the 1-2 rather than race Oscar. Oscar going off the track just gives Lando an opportunity to take advantage of in terms of getting ahead.
Lap 33
WJ: "And Lando, opportunity: tight into apex turn 1 and turn 2."
Lap 34
TS: "Oscar is everything ok?" OP: "Yep." TS: "Ok we're in the window for a full safety car, in the window for a full safety car."
😂
WJ: "And Lando the full safety car window is open, just the full one. For your info it might mean a short soft stint at the end."
Lap 35
TS: "Kay pace is still good; make sure you stay off the astro cause that put a lot of temperature into the rears. Settle them back down; it's a really good place."
WJ: "And Lando both cars struggling with the rears. I know you know: you need to avoid those snaps."
So here what we get is Oscar fucked his rear tires by going off track. Between laps 33 and 36, the gap between Lando and Oscar drops from around 3.5 seconds to about 1.5 seconds. Lando has been concerned about his rear tires since lap 10. In Lap 27 Will specifically said that Lando was locking up his rear tires in turns 1 and 2.
This moment of Oscar going off track is literally the moment that changes everything. In Lap 33 we hear that Lando wants to fight Oscar for P1, but he doesn't really have any options to do so: too far behind to undercut, stuck in bad air and traffic. Oscar going off track closes the gap between them by SO much SO quickly that it suddenly becomes a new race. This is the moment where, if they were competitors, it would make perfect sense for Lando to take advantage of Oscar's mistake by undercutting him. And they ARE competitors to the extent that they are directly competing in the driver's championship. It makes sense that in this moment Lando spots a weakness in the competition and begins to focus on ways to exploit it. HOWEVER. Lando specifically is currently operating under the team's orders to defend P2, NOT challenge P1. Refer back to Andrea Stella's interview about potentially punishing drivers who disobey orders and you can see here the first hints of the future conflict between Lando and the pit wall.
Lap 36
TS: "Okay we're now in both safety car windows, safety car and virtual safety car." OP: "Copy, I think target level will be enough." TS: "Understood. We think we need target minus five, target minus 5."
Oscar is pushing for that (I think) lap 50 pit stop; the pit wall has already decided to move it up to around 45, probably because both cars are doing a shit job with their rear tires. At this point, given the pre-race decision that whoever lead into the last pit stop would be uncontested papaya P1, the pit wall is probably anticipating pitting Oscar first. He gets more specific instructions than Lando does (target minus 5 vs mid-40s) so it seems clear that they expect to maneuver Lando's pit stop around Oscar's rather than vice versa. Oscar is the priority driver at this moment.
WJ: "Lando, the key here will be to get to the mid-40s, and both safety car windows are open; please confirm."
That's not a typo; the radio recording has no response from Lando. THIS is why we get Will's cunty "is ur radio broke" message in lap 52, because LANDO HAS IGNORED HIM FOR 16 LAPS STRAIGHT.
Lap 37
TS: "Ok pace looks to be recovering a bit; how's the tire?" OP: "Yeah, recovered a bit now." TS: "Next few laps will be tricky with the traffic. You're doing a good job."
Lap 38
TS: "Ok you've got five seconds of clear air now, five seconds of clear air. And we're still putting a gap on Hamilton, and Verstappen is still stuck behind him."
Oscar can't make use of this clear air to pull ahead of Lando. Across laps 38 and 39, the gap between them hovers around 1.3.
WJ: "Lando, just be careful of the rears, turn 4, turn 11."
Here is where we get the beginning of the end in terms of specific Lando tire comments. He's known that his rear tires are not where they'd like him to be since lap 10. He's been warned twice in the first half of the race about using too much tire in turns 4 and 11. Now we put those two issues together: rear tires specifically struggling in turns 4 and 11.
Lap 39
WJ: "And Lando, gap now is 1.3; ok to race the papaya car, but still the mid-40s."
So now Lando has been given permission to race Oscar until the mid-40s pit stop. This I think we all assumed just from hearing the radio message over the broadcast. The key info that we didn't have on Sunday was that this is not just "race then stop." We now know from Baz's tweet that whoever lead INTO that pit stop was meant to be the uncontested winner. Of course I soooooo wish to have been a fly on the wall of that meeting so I could have the exact language of the agreement. Presumably "leading into the pit stop" is that whoever was P1 before either of them pit was meant to be P1 after they pit, or reestablished as P1. But I can easily see how, depending on the language of the initial instruction, this could be open the door for confusion re: Oscar being P1 but Lando being given the preferential undercut. Lando WASN'T P1 going into the pit stop, but by pitting him with an undercut, literally everyone knew he was going to be P1 coming out of the pit. Are you functionally P1 "going in" if you know you're going to be P1 coming out? I'm overthinking this way too hard and certainly thinking about it more than Oscar and Lando are capable of 😂 I think without the full story (which we'll never have), the most plausible explanation is "what conclusion is most likely to be reached by two under-educated rich white men" and the answer is of course the simplest conclusion: Oscar was leading into the pits, so Oscar should be reestablished as P1. The fact that Lando was so worked up about the situation is, in my view, more of a demonstration of the fact that he always assumed he would be winning, right from the initial pre-race agreement, rather than an indication that the instructions were unclear. But we can never really know 🤷♀️

10 12 and 31!
Sasha, thank you!! And also dfsgsfd thank you to everyone who wants me to have the opportunity to yell about mika vs michael dsfgjsdf
10. What were your first thoughts when you got into F1?
dffgjdfjh I have no idea but supposedly I was obsessed with the red car so probably just “pretty colour”
12. Which was the first driver you supported?
Much to the dismay of my parents who supported mclaren like good, patriotic brits, I was absolutely 100% swept up in the awe of Schumi Dominance. Like my mum wasn’t mean about it bc I was an actual baby but suffice to say whenever I was happy they were devastated.
31 - Still Mika vs Michael! But my second favourite rivalry honestly I’m gonna say the bizarre Seb vs Fernando vs Mark fiasco of 2011/2012 bc 1) Threeway Rivalry, Unique. 2) it was just Fernando outdriving his car, absolute peak performance, Sebastian living his best life, and Mark acting like Sebastian was a master manipulator evil man whilst he was actually the one manipulating the press heavily.

2022 Belgian Grand Prix - Race Report
Hello, everyone from a post-race week where we reunite for the thrill of Formula 1 with a triple-header after a long break. Honestly, we were getting very impatient with the 1-month summer break with no racing. We will revisit some noteworthy events that unfolded during the long-awaited Belgian Grand Prix, especially after last season's UTTER FIASCO. And while we start our article, we do not forget to remember Anthoine Hubert, a young driver who lost his life in a terrible pile-up during the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix Formula 2 Feature Race with love and longing for his dreams left incomplete. Ride in peace, Anthoine; we are still racing for you.
Grid Penalties, SPECTACULAR Qualifying Session.
We can not start this article without mentioning that nearly half of the drivers on the grid received grid penalties due to complete engine or engşne parts replacements which led to an extraordinary qualifying session. 6 drivers (please correct me if I'm wrong), including championship contenders Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), received grid penalties for replacing engines or engine parts. Naturally, other teams, especially midfield - upper/midfield teams, wanted to take advantage of this situation. Alpine, for one, took 3rd place with their veteran driver 2x World Champion Fernando Alonso. McLaren, likewise, was not bad at all. Even Williams, considered a ''backmarker'', took a great spot with Alex Albon. This mixed-up grid indeed raised the levels of excitement for everyone.
A Classic Belgian Start: Chaos At The First Corner
Now onto the race. The historical Spa - Francorchamps track almost always makes for a chaotic race start, and this year was no exception. The Alonso - Hamilton contact left Hamilton out of the race, and Stroll coming real close to destroying Vettel made for a glammed-up invitation to the Safety Car during the opening lap. While Alonso made contact with 7x World Champion Lewis Hamilton as the latter did not leave enough space, our guess is that the young driver Lance Stroll almost destroyed his teammate, 4x World Champion Sebastian Vettel, due to cold tires and cold brakes. Meanwhile, our beloved ''flying Finn'' Valtteri Bottas could not escape a spinning Nicholas Latifi (whom we think we can now call the king of chaos) and met an early end to his race. Despite all this drama, it was quite an enjoyable race once the Safety Car left the track.
Super Max or Flying Dutchman?
I try to write as objectively as possible, but I just can't overlook certain things. Young defending champion Max Verstappen drove like a dream in Belgium, his 2nd home as if he were in a different dimension. He took the lead of the race on lap 12 after starting from 14th place due to grid penalties, and from that point onwards, even his teammate Sergio Perez who was running in 2nd place, could not catch up with him. Max took a considerably easy win with an over 18 seconds gap even to his teammate. We are unsure if we should keep calling him ''Super Max'' or start calling him the ''flying Dutchman'' at this point. What do you think?
Over And Over And Over Again... Ferrari & Strategical Disaster
As a Red Bull supporter, I am sincerely upset about what the young Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have to deal with. I can't even begin to understand how such a historical and iconic team like Ferrari, one of the oldest teams in Formula 1, can make such strategical errors. I am genuinely distraught and even sad. Fiasco 1: In Hungary, they opted to go with the hard compound tires while everyone else was complaining, and this weekend they did not use the hard compound tires at all even though it was advantageous! Fiasco 2: Despite his cries over the radio, they did not take him in for a pitstop, and then they took their championship contender driver in from 5th place, costing him a 5th place finish and a penalty for pitlane exit speed limit infringement! It is NOT MY INTENTION AT ALL to make fun of or to belittle, but someone PLEASE save these boys from this team!
In the end, defending champion Max Verstappen saw the chequered flag with a victory while his teammate Sergio Perez came home 2nd, hauling up a good points tally for himself and his team. He also took 2nd place in the championship standings, which makes us think, is this gonna be a championship battle between 2 teammates? On the other hand, Carlos Sainz took 3rd place for his team and completed the podium.
With that, we are ending yet another Race Report. This was relatively short as there were not many noteworthy events except those I mentioned, but I hope I did not make many mistakes. If I made errors and/or crossed the line of objectivity, I kindly request your forgiveness. I wish everyone a great weekend and goodbye until Sunday's Dutch Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton put on yet another dominant display to win the Belgian GP and extend his F1 2020 championship lead. The Briton was in a league of his own at Spa-Francorchamps and crossed the line 8.448 secs ahead of his Mercedes team mate Valtteri Bottas. F1’s 70th Anniversary GP winner Max Verstappen held position in 3rd place to take his sixth consecutive podium finish. · Hamilton now leads the standings by 47 points from Verstappen · Ricciardo and Ocon finish 4th and 5th for Renault · Ferrari out of the points in 13th and 14th Hamilton, Bottas, Verstappen hold station The Belgian GP did churn out some memorable moments and overtaking moves, but none of them at the top end of the field as Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen held station out at front to manage their tyres. After making a good start, Hamilton already started pulling away in the lead. An early-race safety car triggered by a huge crash for Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi, which also took out Williams’ George Russell, gave Bottas the opportunity to attempt a pass at the re-start. However, he was unable to make a move stick and spent the race of the race unable to really match Hamilton’s pace, allowing his team mate to build a healthy buffer. Speaking after the race, Hamilton admitted that he was struggling with his tyres and was afraid of a repeat of his British GP fiasco , where he crossed the line on just three wheels. “It wasn’t the easiest of races. I had a lock-up into Turn 5 which started to give a bit of a vibration and then one into the last corner. The tyre temperatures were slowly dropping... and I was a bit nervous we might have a scenario like Silverstone at the end so I was nursing it,” he said. Finishing in 3rd place, Red Bull Racing’s Verstappen quipped that the race was “pretty boring” and “not very interesting” for him. “Not much to do. I ran out of tyres at the end, so I was just stretching it out, saving the front tyres. It was not enjoyable out there today,” he added. Strong race for Renault Renault bounced back from a disappointing Spanish GP to secure its best team result since Monza last year. Daniel Ricciardo took 4th place and bagged an additional point for setting the fastest lap. The Australian was flying in the final few laps, but was unable to catch up to Verstappen ahead of him. Esteban Ocon, meanwhile, overtook Red Bull Racing’s Alexander Albon on the last lap to claim 5th place. Lando Norris had closed up to the back of the pair towards the end of the race, but had to settle for 7th place. He was the only McLaren driver to compete in the race after Carlos Sainz failed to start due to an exhaust failure. AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and the Racing Point duo of Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez completed the top 10. Ferrari hit a new low Ferrari has struggled for pace all season, but Spa-Francorchamps threw a real curveball for the Italian squad. They narrowly avoided the embarrassment of being knocked out in the first segment of qualifying, and the race saw them finish behind both the AlphaTauri cars and even Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen. Both Ferrari drivers failed to score any points with Sebastian Vettel finishing 13th, ahead of his team mate Charles Leclerc in 14th. Leclerc had done well at the start to gain six places and climb up to 8th. But he dropped down the order as the race progressed, unable to match the pace of his nearest rivals. The Belgian GP proved that Ferrari indeed are running low on power, but there’s a lot of be desired on the chassis side too. With F1 heading to the Temple of Speed, Monza, next week for the Italian GP, Ferrari really have their work cut out if they want to perform decently at their home race. What does the F1 2020 drivers’ championship look like? With his fifth race win (out of seven races) in the bag, Hamilton has now extended his championship lead over Verstappen to a very healthy 47 points. Meanwhile, Bottas has slashed into Verstappen’s advantage and i...

Alright hear me out this is one of the best Hungarian GP takes, or at the very least one I subscribe to.
TRANSLATION: What could have been going in the head that was inside this helmet, to fight for so many laps against McLaren and entertain us with a radio soap opera with dramatic tones? In reality, pilots are programmed since childhood to be selfish, to be unyielding, cold, practical, surgical. They are survivors in a ruthless jungle. After sculping you to be a predator, there comes a day in which they ask you to be generous, and spit out the bite in your mouth. They aren't programmed for this, and so it's that hard for them.

Hungarian GP 24 Part 3: You're not you when you're Hungary
We pick up in Lap 42 as Oscar is getting a radio message that is quite ominous in hindsight.
Laps 1-32 | Laps 33-41 | Laps 42-55 | Laps 56-70
Lap 42: ominous music the remix
Lap 43 Lewis and Charles on new tires, everyone else old. First mention by the commentators on Lando undercutting Oscar, followed by the assumption that McLaren would only do it as a tactical move to keep Lewis from taking 2nd. Note that the gap between Oscar and Lando has been slowly widening since lap 38 despite the standing order that Lando can push for p1. Commentators say Lewis is 29 secs behind “the mclarens” but about 1 sec faster pace. Given the 20 sec pit stop time they should pit soon but can both make it back out ahead.
Lap 44 commentators say there is radio chatter between Oscar and the team if he can make his expected number of laps before pit and he says yes. Gap to Lewis has dropped to 28 secs. Gap between Oscar and Lando has widened to about 2 secs
End of 44 mclarens are approaching another set of cars to lap. Slower in traffic
Lap 45 commentators say that a few laps ago Lando’s radio said he had “unacceptable speed around turn 4” uh ok you told him to race tho? This could be why Oscar is opening up a gap again. Also note that the “race until mid-40s” benchmark has definitely arrived. Pitstop when my dudes
LAP 45 LANDO PIT
HANG ON WHERES MY CALCULATOR
Ok the moment of the call.
Ok the gap from Oscar to Lewis was 27.064. We can definitely see that Lewis is gaining about a lap per second as the commentators said (lap 43 = 29 secs, 44 = 28, 45 = 27). Lando has been slowly losing speed compared to Oscar but over the course of about 5 laps; between 44 and 45 he only lost about 0.05
We can sort of piece together the full picture tho. Lando is getting scolded for pushing his tires too hard between laps 40-44 meanwhile Oscar in 44 says that his tires are fine and he can keep his pace. The gap between them is slowly widening either because Lando is slowing down or Oscar is speeding up. Lewis is quickly catching up. The team decides to send in Lando 1st because they’re afraid he’s going to be overtaken
I think this is kind of a stupid fear tho? Ok, take the worst scenario: Lando has worn out his tires and is slowing down. Even if he slows down the ENTIRE amount from laps 39-45 in ONE lap 46 AND Lewis gains a full second, Lando specifically should still have 23 seconds for a pit stop. As the commentators are always telling me that the average pit stop is 20-21 seconds, that seems like more than enough time to get it done unless for some reason your pit lane fucks it up entirely. I should have taken notes on the time lengths of their last pit stops 😭
So to me this seems like they made a risk management calculation and picked a conservative approach rather than a risky one. With hindsight I think they should have pitted a lap earlier 🤷♀️ however this is definitely a high risk high reward sport so if they’re going to pit later they should at least put their whole pussy into it instead of chickening out halfway
The conspiracy theorist in me is wondering if at the lap 39 ok to race papaya their two teams stopped sharing data/working together and then got overwhelmed and panicked when they tried to come back together for the pit stop strategy
A few last notes before I unpause: Lap 39 Lando getting told to race and then immediately getting scolded for… racing. Meanwhile lap 42 Oscar getting “don’t worry about Hamilton” and lap 44 he can make the tires work. They were both getting such confused information and the pit fiasco is so clearly a team error with all the pieces laid out. They both followed orders until Lando (understandably) got fed up with following orders (race, pit) and then getting scolded for doing so (don’t go fast, let Oscar pass). Oscar’s 42 and 44 radios are interesting too since we can clearly see that the team changed their mind on strategy in between those radios. At lap 42, Oscar was going to pit first. By lap 44, Lando was going to pit first. Again I think they waited too long to make a decision—clearly lap 43 gave them the data that Lewis was becoming a threat and they needed to pit. Oscar 44 Lando 45 would have given them plenty of pit time without the undercut.
Lando’s pit only took 21.249 😭
Lap 46 Lando is on scrubbed medium tires. Commentators immediately assume that Lando will be ordered to give up the position to Oscar. We get this on Oscar’s radio: “OK Oscar, Lando has pitted to cover Hamilton, to make sure he covers Hamilton. We’ll manage that situation, best pace from you now. Best pace. Best pace. Don’t worry about Lando.” From beginning to end of 46 Lando gained over a second on the race pace so the tires were immediately helpful at the same rate as Lewis.
Lap 47 Oscar’s pit. Lando has by now gained about 2.5 seconds on the race pace. Commentators were a bit surprised that Oscar didn’t pit on lap 46 given that the gap between them
Lap 48 commentators say that Oscar has again had a message from radio saying that they plan to reestablish him in p1. So that’s twice before Oscar even pits where Lando (as far as we know without the full team radio) may not have heard that message at all yet. Oscar’s pit was slower, 21.823
Lap 48 commentators debating fair for Oscar to have p1 back vs Lando needing points to challenge Max for championship. Lando’s radio: “OK Lando, Oscar has just pitted. He’ll likely come out just behind you. We’d like to re-establish the order, at your convenience.” He’s 3 seconds ahead of Oscar when he gets that message
The central conflict is already established between Oscar “focus on your own race, don’t worry about Lando” and Lando “we’d LIKE to swap at YOUR CONVENIENCE”. Again they’re getting slightly different messages re: order vs suggestion and priority of swapping vs racing it out
1st thing Oscar does out of the pit is hit the gravel trap 😭 why are you making this more difficult for yourself
Lap 48 Lando sets the fastest lap which was, if you check closely at all of my screenshots, held by Charles for the last 100 years
Lap 49 commentators immediately assume Lando will give over the position to Oscar
Different commentator mentioning that Lando isn’t going to make it an easy decision for McLaren. Important for Oscar to do the best driving of his life and stick close to Lando to make the decision easier; Lando naturally trying to do the opposite. This is another place I feel the team really went wrong. If a swap is what they wanted, they should have ordered them to swap by lap 50 and then race it out after that (exception for threats to the 1-2). Or some other of the million possible plans that aren’t actively working against the drivers’ desires to compete and win. Honestly, even though it would suck for Oscar, it honestly might have been easier to understand as a driver if they just said “lando is our star driver, he gets p1 priority, if you want it race him for it.” I also feel obligated to point out, again, that Oscar has at this point flubbed it off the track twice, while Lando at least previously was abusing his tires too much. They’ve both made mistakes that are obvious even to my newbie self. Neither of them have had some A+ no hitter race that somehow merits complete protection.
Also lap 49, not mentioned in the broadcast but I can see it in the radio transcript, Lando gets a reminder to look after his tires after setting fastest lap
Lap 51 Oscar is still 3.6 seconds back from Lando and he gets this radio: “OK Oscar, so, once you get to Lando, we’ll swap positions. We’ll swap position, but we want to avoid Lando having to give up a lot of race time.” So his instructions have now changed from “don’t worry about Lando” to “catch up to Lando”. Commentators second my thinking that this is ok to race the papaya car 2.0
Lap 52 commentators note that in order to catch Lando, Oscar will have to deal with the slipstream off Lando’s car, which will slow Oscar down
Lap 53 Lando’s radio: WJ: “And Lando, radio check, please. LN: “Yes, loud and clear.” WJ: “OK, save the tyres at Turn 4 and Turn 11, please.” These radio instructions can’t stop me because I can’t hear 😂 This is the 3rd save your tires message to Lando (somewhere laps 39-44 as well as 49 and 53) with corner 4 being specifically called out twice. So Oscar has gone off track before and after his pit, and Lando has worn out his tires before and after pit. They’re both making the same mistake repeatedly rather than learning from previous errors. Like I said neither of them are significantly more perfect than the other at this point.
Also 53, Oscar has made up over .6 of a second, but Lando is stuck in traffic behind (lapped) 16th place
